Call for volunteers to help Helston shine A CALL has gone out for volunteers to take part in Helston Town Tidy Week. Event organisers, Helston in Bloom, are calling on residents, businesses and groups to come together to help Helston shine in time for Flora Day. Now in its fourth year, this year’s event runs from Sunday, April 17 to Saturday, April 23 with a thank you get together on the Saturday evening. Last year’s event was a hailed a phenomenal success with more than 190 volunteers coming forward, over 30 bags of debris and rubbish collected and nearly 800 volunteer hours collectively given. The town received recognition by receiving the CIWM Clean Britain Community Award for the hard work undertaken by the volunteers.
Rose Sanders, Chair of Helston in Bloom said: “We have already had pledges of participation from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Culdrose and other local businesses and organisations within the town. However, we are particularly keen to involve as many members of the general public as possible. Even an hour of your time over the week will make all the difference.” The group are also keen to hear from individuals with ideas on which areas need the most improvement and can also assist local groups in organising a litter pick or tidy in their own area. Care home pledges pay boost for staff A Helston care home has pledged to boost the salaries of its support staff by more than a fifth as it introduces the voluntary Living Wage. Penhellis House will pay its care staff, in-house cleaners, laundry and kitchen staff at least £8.25 an hour - an increase of 23 per cent. Penhellis House Manager Rebekah Walmsley said: “We have voluntarily boosted the hourly rate well above the national minimum because we recognise the importance of the work done by our staff and
acknowledge their huge contribution to the care and wellbeing of our residents. “We believe we are a leader in care for older people, delivering the highest quality of care and nursing care in a comfortable, friendly and high-quality environment. This salary increase will be met from within the existing financial structure of the home.” Penhellis House employs more than 40 staff and offers general nursing care for up to 26 adults

I OFTEN feel that large corporations do not have any interest in trading fairly and are managed by people calculating ways to exploit us. I spent the weekend in London helping my grandma celebrate her 90th birthday and made the mistake of not filling up the car with fuel before setting off on my return journey to Cornwall. This led to me paying a whopping £11 more on just one tank of diesel than I paid at Turnpike Garage before setting off on the outward journey. When I was younger, I could eat up the long miles
I AM disappointed that a family of travellers have not only applied for planning permission to remain on a site on the Lizard but that it could actually be granted. The family have lived in a stationary caravan on the top tier of North Corner car park, which enjoys spectacular views of Coverack Bay for more than ten years and St Keverne Parish Council served eviction notices in January. In reply, the family have sought planning permission to remain on the site by applying for a lawful development certificate. According to a report that I read, her application states: “This has been a family home for over ten years and as such we have long-established connections in

When a pub brawl becomes a murder LAST week saw police called to a mass brawl in the early hours on Coinagehall Street in Helston. It is reported that the brawl began after a man was ejected from a nearby club which led to approximately 20 men becoming involved in a melee. As is normally the case in these type of incidents, excess drink seems to have been the trigger. It lowers peoples inhibitions and dulls the ability for rational thought and I wonder how many of the people involved spared a moment to consider the repercussions of their actions. Last year a man was killed in Redruth when a fight outside the Twilight Zone escalated to such a degree that two men beat him to death. As well as a young life cruelly taken away and a future not realised, there will have been numerous other lives irreversibly affected, both people

A scuffle in town after a few beers may seem like a bit of a laugh and no big deal but there is no way of knowing how a punch to the head will affect different individuals. I hope that those involved woke the next morning with remorse and consider how lucky they are that no one was seriously injured. * Between writing this piece and going to press, a friend of mine saw his brother killed in a brawl outside a club in Leamington Spa on Saturday night. From what I can gather, he was caught in the crossfire of a fight between two rival fractions and he was hit by accident. It only takes one moment to change countless lives.

Princess Royal visits sailing charity for injured veterans THE Princess Royal has visited a sailing charity to meet staff, volunteers and beneficiaries and to mark the start of preparations of a bid to sail around Britain. Princess Anne arrived at Pendennis Castle in Falmouth by helicopter before travelling to Turn to Starboard’s headquarters at Falmouth Marina by car. She was met by Turn to Starboard Founder, RAF Squadron Leader (retired) Shaun Pascoe, civil dignitaries and some of the charity’s trustees. During the visit the Prin-
cess Royal congratulated the charity on supporting injured veterans by teaching them to sail and gaining new qualifications. She then took a journey to Pendennis Marina for a tour of a replica Tall Ship donated to the charity by the Prince’s Trust. Charity founder RAF Squadron Leader (retired) Shaun Pascoe said: “We feel privileged to be visited by The Princess Royal, particularly with her awarding two of our recent Yacht Masters their certificates. It was quite a special moment for them and for
us, plus a boost to our participants who are preparing for the Round Britain Challenge.” The Turn to Starboard Round Britain Challenge 2016 will see a crew of up to 30 veterans – many with little or no sailing experience – sail aboard the Spirit of Falmouth for the complete voyage or smaller sections of the route. Ryanair returns to Cornwall with new routes RYANAIR has celebrated its return to Cornwall with the launch of two new routes. New twice-weekly services to Alicante and Frankfurt Hahn will now operate from Cornwall Airport Newquay. Alicante will be served on Wednesdays and Sundays, with Frankfurt Hahn operating on Thursdays

Cadgwith Cove welcome Help for Heroes rowers
A GROUP of military veterans rowed into Cadgwith last week as part of Help for Heroes Great Big Cornish Gig Project. The veterans set off from the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth on April 2 and headed for St Mary’s in The Scilly Isles. The veterans rowed into Cadgwith on the fourth leg of their journey and were welcomed by the Cadgwith gig team and the local community. The project took months of planning and included a gig built by wounded, injured and sick

Council initiative helps dog owners to comply with new legislation WITH the law now requiring all dogs to be micro-chipped, Cornwall Council has confirmed that the micro-chipping service it has offered in partnership with Dog’s Trust has resulted in more than 3,000 pets being microchipped free of charge. As well as complying with the new law, a micro-chip makes it quicker and easier to identify the details of the owner of the dog, enabling them to be reunited with their pet more quickly and easily. This is particularly important if a stray dog is injured in an accident and needs urgent veterinary treatment. Last year the Council introduced a new scheme in which details of stray dogs found by its dog wardens are highlighted on the Council’s website and on the Public Protection Facebook page. This has made it easier for the owners of lost dogs to check if their pet has been picked up by the Council.

Record month for UK new car market as 16 plate-change increases demand THE UK’s new car market grew by 5.3% in March, making it the biggest ever month since the bi-annual plate change began in 1999, according to figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). 518,707 new cars were registered in March, only the third time the market has surpassed half a million units in a single month. The month rounded off a record quarter, in which more than 770,000 new cars were registered, a 5.1% increase over the first quarter in 2015. Demand for alternative fuel vehicles showed a notable increase of 21.5% in the month, as consumers continued to favour lower emission vehicles with lower running costs. Registrations of both diesel and petrol cars increased, meanwhile, with
respective uplifts of 4.8% and 4.7%. Growth was seen across all sales types in March: private and business registrations increased 3.8% and 15.3% respectively, while in the fleet sector demand grew 6.0%, reversing small declines seen in January and February as buyers sought to maximise residual values by opting for the new March number plate. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “The sector’s strong growth in March rounds off a robust first quarter as British consumers continue to demonstrate their appetite for new cars, especially ultra-low emission vehicles. This confidence should see registrations remain at a high but broadly stable level over the year, but could be undermined by political or economic uncertainty.”

Nissan GT-R Nismo breaks the Guinness World Records title for fastest drift
NISSAN has set the Guinness World Records title for the fastest drift using the specially tuned MY16 Nissan GT-R NISMO by entering a drift at a speed of 304.96 km/hr. Masato Kawabata, the Japanese drift champion and title holder for the D1 Grand Prix series, set the new world record to clinch the top spot from former record holder Jakub Przygoński of Poland. The drift attempt was held during a special event that took place at Fujairah International Airport,
UAE. Let’s keep horses and Life begins for riders safe on our Fiesta at the roads, urges GEM newest Ford show Motoring Assist
AFTER an incredible 40 years of being one of Britain’s most popular cars, the humble Ford Fiesta will be celebrated in a special birthday display later this month. The International Ford Show will show examples of all seven generations of Fiesta, from the earliest Popular and Popular Plus models through to the very latest ST. All types of Fiesta will be included, from showroom condition standard variants to some of the more unusually modified examples, but
all with a common theme. Event Manager Katherine Chappell said: “Everyone has a Fiesta memory. First car, Mum or Dad’s car, a friend’s car, I don’t think there’s anyone who hasn’t had a Fiesta in their lives at some point or another, so it’s right that we should use this brand new show as the first opportunity to mark the model’s milestone anniversary.” But it won’t only be the Fiesta that’s celebrated at the show. The show will also mark the golden anni-

versary of Ford’s Essex V6 engine, with a dedicated The Only Way is Essex display. Iconic cars that used the engine, from the very earliest V6-powered Mk4 Zephyr and Zodiac to the fearsome Capri RS3100 will make up the ranks. The indoor event will have TV Star Ant Anstead from For the Love of Cars as its guest of honour. Ant will be present on Saturday April 30 to answer visitors’ questions and talk about the series’ Mk1 Escort restoration. ROAD safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is adding its voice to the recently-launched equestrian road safety campaign by urging drivers to ‘think horse and rider’ on journeys. The plea follows the news that 36 riders were killed in road incidents over the past five years. GEM supports the recently-launched ‘Dead Slow’ campaign from the British Horse Society, which asks drivers to a maximum of 15mph when they meet a horse and rider on the road. Williams MBE comments: “It’s all about being willing to concede a bit of time and space to a road user who needs it. Horses and riders form part of the complex mix of traffic on our roads. But horses are live animals and can be unpredictable, despite the best efforts of the most experienced rider. “GEM urges drivers to reflect for a few moments on the risks they pose – to themselves and to others – and to think again before deliberately driving too fast or too close when passing a horse and rider.” GEM offers simple tips for riders and drivers, in an at-
tempt to reduce confusion and conflict on the roads: • Drivers, give horses as much room as the road allows. • Look out for a rider’s signals, especially if you are being asked to slow down or stop. • Don’t accelerate as you go past a horse, or immediately after you have passed it. • Riders, make sure you and your horse can be seen easily. Fluorescent leg wraps for the horse are particularly effective. • Ride in single file when traffic needs to pass, thus ensuring there is plenty of space as cars go past. • A ‘thank you’ to a driver for an act of courtesy goes a long way to ensuring that the next horse and rider they meet will get the same treatment. Pearce the big winner Lynx 13 goal at Praa Sands Golf Club record tally RODGER Pearce won Division Two, the Monthly Medal and EGU Gold Medal at Praa Sands Golf Club on Sunday while John Warden won the Division One Monthly medal. PAUL Tresidder of the Godolphin Club won the West Cornwall Pool League Singles Knockout having come through a strong field reduced to 8 on finals night to win the title defeating Paul Williams of Lizard FC A 3-2 in the final. Ironically all the remaining 6 players on the night represented the two top teams of the year Helston FC A and Wendron CC but the two Pauls upset the odds. Paul defeated Les Rundle (Wendron CC) 2-1 in the
quarter final and Steve Williams (Wendron CC) 2-1 in the semi final while Paul Williams defeated Anthony Williams (Helston FC A) 2-0 in the quarter final and Mark Jenkin (Helston FC A) 2-0 in the semi final. White Hart C finished their season in division two with a 6-3 defeat to bottom side Potters Bar B and in Division 3 the Mounts Bay finished off with a 5-4 win over Helston RBL D.
In strong winds but with sunny skies at Mullion on Sunday, a large competitive field gathered to play for the popular Gordon Redfearn Memorial Salver. Scores were low reflecting the challenging conditions leaving only the most capable golfers to take the prizes. THE Culdrose Lynx U12 football team produced another fine performance on Sunday when they travelled to Carharrack. The Lynx dominated the match throughout and scored their highest goal tally to date, finding the back of the net 13 times. The goals came from Kieran Ludkin
