Phansi is pronounced ‘punzi’, meaning ‘below’ or ‘beneath in IsiZulu, after the basement location where it began. ‘Phansi’ is also known as the place beneath, where the ancestral spirits dwell. The museum was started in 2000 as a small private museum, and has since expanded to host one of the biggest and most spectacular collections of African arts and crafts in the world. The collection is held in Roberts House, a fully restored Victorian national monument, in Glenwood, Durban, South Africa. Three floors of the Victorian mansion are packed with Zulu beadwork, earplugs, wire baskets, milk-pails, beer-pots and fertility dolls ; Ndebele blankets and ceremonial items, and artefacts from the eastern Cape, Namibia and Kenya. The most popular exhibit is the life-size marionette room, where thirty life-size puppets are adorned with ceremonial dress from all over Southern Africa. This collection was exhibited at ABC Home, in Manhattan, New York, over the festive season 2008/2009, to great acclaim.

The Durban Art Gallery, now in its second century of existence, is home to collections that are as diverse as the eThekwini population.“Artworks from Europe, the East and Africa, dating from the 15th century to the present, make the gallery a microcosm of the many histories represented here,” says Acting Art Gallery Director, Jenny Stretton. Founded in 1849, Africa’s oldest surviving botanical gardens houses one of the world’s top collections of “living fossil” plants. These pre-dinosaur cycads (seed-producing plants extending back 250 million years) face possible extinction in the wild. The Wood’s Cycad species is named for founding Durban Botanic Gardens curator and botanist John Medley Wood, who, in 1895, discovered a single, surviving cycad plant in a Zululand forest. Walking through the Gardens’s cycad forest is a bit like stepping onto the set of Jurassic Park. No dinosaurs here, but the pink-backed pelicans sitting in the trees do look eerily like pterodactyls.

The KZN Science Centre implements projects that aim to create awareness of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics whilst fostering a culture of giving back through their non-profit status. During major school holidays special themed programs are offered for the interest of the young visitors.

UMGENI RIVER BIRD PARK Designed and built by Dr. Alan Abrey in an old quarry site, the Umgeni River Bird Park was opened in April 1984. The park was owned privately by a group of bird lovers who wanted to educate others about birds from around the world. It was run by Alan Abrey until his retirement in 1997, and in those years the artwork for the park (guidebook illustrations, park maps, and so forth) were done by his daughter Robyn Abrey. Set in a land filled and landscaped former quarry, the park includes several natural waterfalls. Paths for visitors wind through three aviaries and past other aviaries and open exhibits. A viewing window in the nursery lets visitors see how the birds are hatched and raised. Construction of the Free Flight Bird Show arena was started in 1995, with the venue staging its first show in 1996. The Free Flight Bird Show, opened in 1996, features birds from North and South America, Africa,

21 Hello Durban

BOYS DAYOUT FIRKIN HOPHOUSE MICRO BREWERY & PUB Shop 401, Roof Top Level,Pavillion, Westville.Tel: 031 265 0154 For those who seek a top quality pub experience and welcome a comfy booth from which to watch their favourite sport on television, the Firkin is “Firkin Perfect!” The word “Firkin” refers to an old English term for a nine-gallon barrel of lager, which has become the common thread among these cosy pubs. Many of the pubs are renovations of existing buildings, the walls hung with quirky English-inspired decoration. A full menu is offered, featuring traditional fare such as bangers and mash, and thick crusted pies. The menu is perfect for the groups and parties that the pubs enjoy entertaining, and so is the vast selection of lagers, ales, and stouts available on tap. Our independent beer, Foxx Lager and Foxx Red Ale, is exclusively available at all of the Firkin stores. It is a beer well worth tasting! It is a place to have Firkin good food, Firkin good drink, and a Firkin good time!!

Good food and cold beer served by a beautiful Hooters Girl. Hooters is a classic sports bar and casual dining restaurant offering a unique experience of good quality food, excellent customer service and a fun and relaxed American dinner atmosphere.

Advertorial revised : when on holiday

Less air-conditioning... more air You’ve worked hard all year long; the time has arrived to unwind, switch off, recharge, and give your electricity usage a break too when you check into your favourite hotel or lodge or B&B.

Help keep South Africa powered up this holiday season by doing the following in your room: l

l

l l

l

Switch off electrical appliances such as televisions, cell phone chargers and laptops when you are not using it. Switch off appliances in standby mode – ‘standby’ uses almost 50% of the energy an electrical appliance would normally use. Switch off all lights when you leave your room. Switch off the air-conditioner when you don’t need it; open windows to allow cool air coming in from the outside - if it’s necessary to switch on the air-conditioner, a temperature setting of 23° is sufficient. Shower instead of taking a bath; it uses less hot water.

l

l

l

If you need hot water plug the basin; don’t leave the hot taps running. Don’t open the bar fridge unnecessarily or leave the door open too long; if you do, warm air flows in and causes the fridge to use more electricity to maintain the correct temperature. Only fill the kettle with as much water as you need for your morning cup of tea or coffee.

Less is more... the less electricity you use the more energy efficient your holiday will be.

For more energy saving tips this summer visit www.eskom.co.za/idm
