There are a total of 120 temporary stops on three bus routes, moving people between Parklands, Blouberg Sands and Big Bay (past the Blouberg Strand beach front) and the main station at Table View. These temporary stops and routes are designed to test demand and travelling patterns ahead of a more extensive and permanent network of feeder routes. F14 Big Bay – Table View – Parklands East (route to Blouberg Strand beach front) F15 Parklands East – Table View – Blouberg Sands F16 Marine Circle – Table View – Blouberg Sands The main line is scheduled every 10 minutes during peak hours and every 20 minutes during rest of the day and weekends. ROUTES TABLE VIEW – CIVIC CENTRE A dedicated lane connects Table View station in Blaauwberg Road and Civic Centre, on Hertzog Boulevard in the CBD, via PaardenEiland and Woodstock. There is also a new pedestrian access route from the suburb of Brooklyn across the canal to stations at Zoarvlei and Vrystaat, and a connection to the rail system at Woodstock. At Civic Centre station, commuters can change to a feeder service, which runs to the Gardens via Long Street and to the Waterfront via Green Point, or to the convenient and affordable Airport service.

4TH HELDERBERG WINE FEST SET TO ENTERTAIN WINE LOVERS AND FAMILIES With nearly 40 wineries participating in the 2011 Helderberg Wine festival in the Somerset West/ Stellenbosch area from Thursday, 20 October to Sunday, 23 October, visitors are once again guaranteed a range of activities at each cellar for young and old. Great food, live music, kiddies programmes, exhibitions, shows and award-winning wines draw the crowds to this laid-back event, which takes place at the different wineries over the four day period. Hermanus, known as the best land-based whale watching destination in the world, plays host to thousands of visitors (2010 we welcomed 130 000 visitors) who flock to the seaside resort to exhilarate in the unique natural environment, watch the whales and revel in music, and African rhythms during the festival The Whales are always the star performers at the festival and will be joined on land by great food, quality crafters, sport events, kids entertainment and thousands of people celebrating Spring in the most beautiful place on earth - Hermanus The 2010 Festival spread its wings to include ten venues around Hermanus and we plan to further extend this in 2011 to include Mount Pleasant and Gateway Shopping Centre amongst others. We are pleased to introduce the Checkers Living Table to the 2011 festival, who will provide a sixty five meter marquee offering visitors the opportunity to meet the celebrities who will be doing cooking demonstrations, while enjoying some snacks and a glass of wine. The Houses Of Parliament are an architectural wonder. Gallery tickets are available from Room 12. Overseas visitors must present their passports. The parliament building, which also houses the Library of Parliament, is beautiful, with its central dome and Corinthian porticos and pavilions. You can also sit in the public gallery during a parliamentary session.The original designer, Charles Freeman, miscalculated the foundations and was replaced by Henry Greaves, who oversaw the building until completion in 1885. The new House of Assembly was designed by Sir Herbert Baker. Solitaire was first seen in 1956, danced by the Sadler's Wells Ballet in London. The ballet was described by the choreographer, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, as "a kind of game for one", in which a girl tries repeatedly to join in the activities of her friends, but always finds herself alone. Danced to the music of British composer, Sir Malcolm Arnold, this ballet will be taught and staged by the Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Dance, Lynn Wallis. Adele Blank's creation, Mad Dogs, is a more contemporary work and uses an eclectic range of music and subject in its string of fascinating vignettes, reflecting real-life situations. The work is influenced by the paintings of Jack Vettriano. Graduation Ball, the third work on the programme, was created in 1940 by the Russian choreographer, David Lichine, for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. Using music by Johan Strauss II arranged by Antal Duråti, the ballet is set in a Viennese boarding school, where the young girls put on a ball with the cadets of the city's military academy. Liane Lurie, former ballerina and Ballet Mistress of the PACT Ballet Company, will teach and direct this work. This is a diverse programme, taking the audience from the delightfully wistful Solitaire to critically acclaimed local choreographer, Adele Blanks contemporary genius ending with the quirky and charming classic, Graduation ball. Every week you will find a different menu at the Foodbarn where Franck’s French inspired food is paired meticulously with Nitida’s cool climate, smooth wines. Nitida, situated in the heart of the idyllic Durbanville Wine Valley, is set apart by its cool climate wines from an area unsurpassed in delivering long, slow, ripening conditions because of its surprisingly high altitude and close proximity to the icy Atlantic Ocean. Frank is held in high esteem for food that is beautifully prepared without being pretentious by capturing the natural tastes, smells and textures in every Foodbarn dish. Known for his wonderfully unconventional and adventurous wine pairings, you can expect to try a different menu every week, from smoked bonito slices to warm baby squid salad paired with Nitida Sauvignon Blanc 2011. Alternatively there are escargots or his yellow lentils and coriander spring rolls, which can be enjoyed with Nitida Semillon 2010. Fish lovers can enjoy a variety of different roasted fish dishes every week, which go beautifully with the Bordeaux style white blend, Nitida Coronata 2009. And for the adventurous, try the offal of the day with Nitida Semillon 2010. Meat aficionados can look forward to various slow roasted pork, lamb or rump cutlets weekly to pair with Nitida Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. For your sweet tooth, choose between interesting homemade options such as ice creams, cakes or crepes that change weekly. You can enjoy this food and wine tasting experience from Mondays to Saturdays for lunch or dinner and choose between a 3-course meal at R165, 4-courses at R185 or a 5-course menu at R215. Included in the price, you can watch Frank when he does a cooking demonstration on Wednesday evenings between 18h30 and 19h30 of some of the dishes on his menu. Over and above the paired wines, and on Sundays, Nitida wines are available at very good prices either by the bottle or carafe. These are also available with his a la carte menu.

These are general Garden walks aimed at visitors from overseas or from other parts of South Africa. Visitors are given a general view of the Garden or as much as can be fitted into such a short time. The walk usually takes two hours, but can be shorter or longer - to suit the visitors' needs. Tour guides give visitors a resumĂŠ of the Garden's history, from Khoi-San through Dutch and British colonial times to the present day. They explain the physical features of the Garden, the streams and water supply. They explain the importance of the Cape Floristic Region and the reason for it being a World Heritage Site, stressing the biodiversity that makes Kirstenbosch different from the other 6 great botanical gardens of the world. The guides do their best to stay well informed and capable of answering questions from those who want more than just a general walk, always ready to acknowledge ignorance too! Much depends on the age and physical fitness of the visitors - not all can reach the lovely Protea section in the upper reaches of the Garden. TOURISM NEWS Ubuntu Expo showcases South Africa increased demand for information by the global tourism industry, and a surge in international tourist arrivals, have sparked the launch of a forum for tourism agents and suppliers to network while learning more about South Africa’s tourist destinations. Launched barely two weeks ago, Ubuntu Expo, a multi-city trade show spearheaded by South African Tourism, has already visited the American cities of New York, Atlanta, Miami and Los Angeles, promoting South Africa as a prime tourist destination. It was launched at the Pierre Hotel in New York City to more than 150 travel agents and journalists, and over 20 South African suppliers. Plans have been put in place to host it annually. The launch was attended by Johannesburg Executive Mayor Parks Tau and his portfolio head of finance, Geoff Makhubo, as well as a delegation from the City of Joburg. The consul-general of South Africa in New York, George Monyemangene, and SthuZungu, president of South African Tourism North America, were also in attendance. Zungu said figures for international tourists to South Africa had surged because of competitive tourism packages and popular local trends. She said the expo focused on educating tourists about available and competitive tourism packages and destinations. It was designed to bring together the global industry, as building relationships was pivotal to growing tourism and for tourists to “fully comprehend our multi-dimensional destination”. Ubuntu Expo was just one of many platforms South African Tourism was investing in to promote the country abroad, she said.

SA Airways posts another profit South African Airways (SAA) made a net profit of
R782-million in the 2010/11 financial year, it announced on Thursday. This was a 77% increase from last year’s R442million. “SAA’s financial position and the state of the business continue to show significant improvement,” board chairwoman Cheryl Carolus said in a statement. “This financial performance is an encouraging response to the strategic objective to become a fully sustainable business over the next three years ... and positioning SAA to compete successfully in the global aviation market in 10 years.” Group operating profit rose by 66% to R807-million from the previous year. Turnover, consisting largely of passenger revenue, increased from R16.9-billion to R18-billion. Operating costs rose by five percent. Recent figures for tourist arrivals from the US in South Africa reveal a 15.6% year-over-year growth since April. Trends have highlighted an increased interest in family and multi-generational travel to the country, as more suppliers had started to accommodate children. According to JabuMabuza, chairperson of the South African Tourism board, from January to April this year, South Africa had 2,750,175 foreign tourist arrivals, up by 7.5% from the 2,558,715 recorded over the same period in 2010. He attributed the growth to the country’s traditional markets and exciting investment markets. Visitor numbers from Europe rose 4.5%, North America were up 16.8%, Asia increased 29.3%, India rose 51% and China were up 25.6%. Tourist

COMPANY’S GARDEN VISITOR CENTRE The garden was established in 1652, making it one of the oldest gardens in the country. The display in the Visitor’s centre gives a comprehensive overview of the early history of the garden, which is unique in that it is the only example of how two different landscape styles – the Dutch ‘produce garden’ grid pattern and the ‘Victorian Romantic’ grid pattern and the overlaid to produce the garden as it exists today. THE OLD CITY HALL Built in 1905, the old City Hall in Darling Street is a mixture of Italian Renaissance and British colonial architecture. It is located on the Grand Parade to the west of the Castle of Good Hope and is built from honey-colored limestone imported from Bath in England. The 60m/200ft high bell-tower, with a carillon installed in 1923, was modeled on London’s Big Ben. The City Hall was the last major Victorian building to be erected in Cape Town. The City Hall’s carillon was installed as a WW1 war memorial, with 22 additional bells being added in 1925 with the visit of the Prince of Wales. Magnificent and imposing, the City Hall commemorates Kind Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, with its mosaic floors, marble staircase, stained glass windows and specially designed organ with 3165 pipes.

OLD CASTLE BREWERY While Castle began making in roads into what had been almost entirely “lion country” work was began on the erection of the Castle Brewery in Woodstock. This brewery was to be sited alongside the new railway line as an advertisement for Castle beer –a sort of early billboard.

THE DRILL HALL AND CENTRAL LIBRARY The foundations of the City Hall were laid on 29th August 1900, and the building finally opened on 25th July 1905, by the Mayor Alderman Hyman Lieberman. It is built in an Italian Renaissance Style with a classical facade in a handsome campanile towering to a height of some 200ft. The exterior stonework is of sandstone and granite. The facade facing on Darling Street has a central feature surmounted by a pediment rising 82 feet above pavement level, the wings on either side are about 60ft in imposing clock tower houses the four-sided City Hall clock built to scale and half the size of London’s Big Ben. The building is divided longitudinally, with one half of the building housing the Grand Hall and reception rooms while the portion originally housing Municipal offices and which fronts onto Darling Street is the home of the Central Library of Cape Town.A stone set into the base of the building in front of the main balcony has this inscription: “upon release from prison on 11 February 1990 and on his election as President of South Africa on 9 May 1994 Nelson Mandela addressed the nation here”.
