KIRSTENBOSCH CEL KIRSTENBOSCH 100 YEARS In May 1913, the Government of the day set aside the estate of Kirstenbosch for the establishment of a National Botanical Garden at Kirstenbosch. The Garden was to be controlled by a Board of five Trustees, three appointed by the Government, one by the Municipality of Cape Town and one by the Botanical Society. The Board held its first meeting on 16 June 1913, and appointed Prof. H.H.W. Pearson as Honorary Director (with no salary) and J.W. Mathews as Curator. A Secretary, a Ranger and a Gardener were also appointed. On 1 July 1913, the Kirstenbosch estate was handed over to the Board of Trustees and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden was born. This was achieved after years of skilful and persistent campaigning by Pearson, in competition with the Department of Agriculture’s plans for a national botanical survey and national herbarium in Pretoria. Pearson’s vision for the new botanical garden was the study and preservation of the country’s indigenous flora, something no other botanical garden had ever done. Pearson and Mathews were confronted with a neglected, overgrown farm, a ruined homestead, hordes of pigs, thickets of weeds and extensive plantations of alien plants. The property had been used for timber by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) since 1657 and belonged to the Company until the first British Occupation of the Cape in 1795. It was privately owned from 1811, farmed from 1823 until 1895, when it was purchased by Cecil John Rhodes who allowed the land to become neglected and the homestead was left empty and fell into ruin. On his death in 1902, the land was bequeathed to the Government, and the Forestry Department planted the estate with Pines and Eucalypts. Much of the early work involved clearing the

weeds and constructing paths and stormwater drains, but attention also had to be given to the prevention of fire, theft and poaching. In the first year, the nursery site had been selected (beside the Bath Stream in the Dell), terraced and a workshed erected, and the main lawn had been cleared and planted with grass. In the first ten to fifteen years many of the principle features of the garden were established: hundreds of cycads were planted in the Cycad Amphitheatre, the rock work along the Bath stream and stone work in the Dell and the Cycad Amphitheatre was completed, Colonel Bird’s Bath was restored, the Main Pond was excavated, Mathews Rockery and the Koppie were laid out, the Protea Garden, Erica Garden and Arboretum were begun, and the living plant collections were being built up. Right from the beginning, the development of the garden has followed the natural, flowing landscape, rather than imposing itself upon it with rigid, geometric lines, and the natural stone has been used for the paths, rockeries and walls. It is thanks to Pearson’s foresight, determination and skill that we have a botanical garden at Kirstenbosch. The passion, hard work and dedication of the staff, and the support of the Botanical Society and its members over the past 100 years have made Kirstenbosch what it is today. Website: www.sanbi.org/gardens/kirstenbosch. Tel: 021 799 8783. NBG, NBI, SANBI A new institution was also established on 1 July 1913, the National Botanic Gardens of South Africa (NBG). The aim of this institution was to create a national network of botanic gardens throughout South Africa, at least one garden in each ecological region of the country, and to focus on its indigenous flora. The second director of the NBG, R.H. Compton, established the first regional garden, the Karoo

NBG, in 1921. The third director, H.B. Rycroft added five gardens: Harold Porter NBG in 1959, the Free State NBG in 1967, the Lowveld NBG and the transfer of the Natal Botanic Garden to the NBG in 1969, and the Witwatersrand NBG in 1982 (renamed the Walter Sisulu NBG in 2004). The NBG was amalgamated with the Botanical Research Institute (BRI) to become the National Botanical Institute (NBI) in 1989. The Pretoria NBG came into the NBI with the merge. In 2004, the NBI became the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). The ninth garden, the Hantam NBG, was added in 2007 and the tenth, in the Eastern Cape, is on the horizon. Website: www.sanbi.org. Head Office: Tel 012 843 5000. Email: info@sanbi.org.za THE BOTANICAL SOCIETY OF SOUTH AFRICA There would be no Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden without the Botanical Society of South Africa. The land for the Garden was granted on condition that the organisation be formed to support the development of the National Botanical Garden. The Society was formed on 10 June 1913 and held its first general meeting on 31 July 1913. Its original aims were to encourage the public’s involvement in the development of Kirstenbosch, to augment the Government grants, to organise botanical shows, and to enlighten and instruct members on botanical subjects. These aims are virtually unchanged today, and the Botanical Society has grown with the old NBG and now SANBI to extend its support to the eight other National Botanical Gardens as well as Kirstenbosch. BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life is the original ground-breaking anatomical exhibition by the trailblazing scientist, Dr Gunther von Hagens and shows the complexity, resilience and vulnerability of the human body through anatomical studies of the body in distress, disease and optimal health. Visitors to BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life will witness the arc of ageing — the body living through time from the spark of conception to old age — refracted through the latest findings in longevity and ageing science. “The older I get, the more I realize that death is normal and that it is life that is exceptional” said Dr von Hagens, “I hope this exhibition will encourage people to strive to live with inspiration every day throughout their lives.” www.bodyworlds.com

TIME TO CELEBRATE SOUTH AFRICA GEARS UP TO CELEBRATE TABLE MOUNTAIN OUR AFRICAN WONDER OF NATURE

The official inauguration of Table Mountain as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature will take place in December. South Africa and Cape Town are gearing up to celebrate the mountain’s success following a three year campaign that drew more than 100 million votes from 220 countries. The event will draw global delegates from the other six New 7 Wonders sites to South Africa. The first official inauguration will take place on Saturday, 1 December on Tafelberg Road at the foot of the mountain and guests will include delegates from the New7Wonders Foundation and the other six New 7 Wonder sites, the City of Cape Town, Vote for Table Mountain ambassadors and members of the Table Mountain Official Supporters’ Committee (OSC). A public inauguration for Table Mountain will take place during the City of Cape Town’s free concert at the Grand Parade on Sunday, 2 December. The concert is part of the City’s Festive Lights celebrations and an impressive plaque will be unveiled.

8 / Hello Cape Town

“Table Mountain is a natural feature of our landscape, a symbol of nature’s permanence and the majesty and beauty of our environment,” says Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille. “Table Mountain’s inauguration as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature is a worthy recognition of this symbol that we all own and cherish. This title will also bring tremendous direct economic and socioeconomic benefits to our city and our country.”

in May this year. International voting had closed on 11 November 2011 when the provisional New 7 Wonders sites were announced.

Immediately after the concert a specially constructed Table Mountain float will join a vibrant procession of other floats representing Cape icons in a trip through the city. This will be followed by the switch on of Adderley Street’s festive lights by Mayor De Lille, marking the official start to the holiday season.

A second New 7 Wonders plaque will be unveiled in Pretoria on Monday, 3 December. The Pretoria ceremony will take place at Muckleneuk, the headquarters of South African National Parks.

“Our Mountain being named a New 7 Wonder of Nature is genuine cause for rejoicing and we hope residents flock to the Grand Parade and Adderley Street to celebrate this incredible achievement,” says Sabine Lehmann, chairperson of the Table Mountain OSC. “Each of the New 7 Wonders of Nature sites have hosted celebrations and now it’s our turn!” Table Mountain’s status as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature became official after an international audit confirmed the result of a global voting process

The African icon will be the sixth site to host its inauguration ceremony following the Puerto Princesa Underground River, the Amazon, Komodo Island, Halong Bay and Iguazu Falls. The seventh site, Jeju Island, will host its inauguration ceremony in 2013.

Paddy Gordon, manager of Table Mountain for SA National Parks said the park’s sound ecological principles played a vital role in its success in being voted a New 7 Wonder of Nature. “Table Mountain National Park has a broad visitor base as diverse as the biodiversity of the park. As custodians of the park, we understand the relationship between its visitors and the natural environment and manage the park so that we can present all visitors with an ecological system that is a benchmark for the globe. “It is wonderful to receive acknowledgement from the people of the globe for the work we do in maintaining the delicate ecology of our wondrous mountain” he says.

CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET The Cape Town City Ballet is pleased to announce details of our forthcoming festive season of ballets in the ARTSCAPE Opera House and Theatre. THE NUTCRACKER ARTSCAPE Opera House, 13 – 23 December, 2012 Featuring the sensational partnership of Daria Klimentová and Vadim Muntagirov at two performances only, we bring you a perennial favourite for the festive season, in a traditional version of the fairytale ballet, The Nutcracker, which brings to life the story of Clara, Fritz, and their eccentric uncle, Drosselmeyer. Daria Klimentová and Vadim Muntagirov, stars of the English National Ballet, will alternate performances with CTCB’s Laura Bosenberg and Thomas Thorne, while Kirstel Jensen makes her debut in the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, partnered by new company Principal, Trevor Schoonraad. The Nutcracker will be accompanied by The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra at selected performances. The traditional fairytale version of The Nutcracker tells the story of Clara at her family's Christmas Eve party. Her mysterious uncle, Drosselmeyer, gives her a Nutcracker doll, starting a night of mysteries and magic as the Nutcracker Prince comes to life to defeat the evil Rat King and his army. Clara travels through a magical snowstorm to celebrate their victory on an enchanted island, where she is transformed into the Sugar Plum Fairy. Celebratory dances from all over the world are performed, culminating in the grand pas de deux of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. The annual Cape Town City Ballet ‘Fairy Parade’ for children will be held on Sunday 23 December, following the 3pm performance. Children, boys and girls, are invited to dress as their favourite fairy

tale character and parade onto the stage to receive a surprise gift from Santa Claus.

F O T AN TH R U ON TA M S E RE TH

Ideally situated in the heart of the Mother City, on Buitengracht Street, we discover the stylish Blakes Restaurant, Wine & Tapas Bar, and VIP Lounge, which is blessed with some of the most spectacular views of Table Mountain. Rochelle Bushell (interior design guru and Owner) has ingeniously utilized the venue space to ensure patrons are able to spend an entire evening enjoying its varied delights on three unique floors.

The first floor Wine & Tapas Bar, complete with Gothic style candlelit chandeliers, is a revered location in which to explore Blakes’ Diners Club Platinum Award winning Wine List. You are offered the privilege of chatting to the quirky Wine Geek & GM, Grant Lynott, whose extensive knowledge has ensured Blakes’ reputation as the only authentic Wine Bar in Cape Town.

The tasteful Asian Parisian décor of Blakes Restaurant offers clientele the opportunity to relax in the warm ambience, and to enjoy a wonderful intimate dining experience. Launching this summer is the ‘secret garden’, a tented al fresco area with a magical atmosphere. The menu, uncomplicated yet rich in flavours, is inspired by classic French & British cuisine.

The top floor VIP Lounge can best be described as a gentleman’s drawing room, with a fireplace, bookcase, luxurious sofas, an old Captains desk (which serves as the bar), and a large deck .

MUSEUMS HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT The Houses Of Parliament are an architectural wonder. Gallery tickets are available from Room 12. Overseas visitors must present their passports. The parliament building, which also houses the Library of Parliament, is beautiful, with its central dome and Corinthian porticos and pavilions. You can also sit in the public gallery during a parliamentary session. The original designer, Charles Freeman, miscalculated the foundations and was replaced by Henry Greaves, who oversaw the building until completion in 1885. The new House of Assembly was designed by Sir Herbert Baker. A pedestrian walkway, Government Avenue, runs through the Company Gardens and provides easy access to Parliament and other nearby attractions are Greenmarket Square, the Castle of Good Hope and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Between July and January, guided tours take place from Monday to Friday: 11:00 and 14:00 Address: 90 Plein Street Cape Town Tel: 021 403 2266 Houses of Parliament - Cape Town on the web: http://www.parliament.gov.za/

Hello Cape Town / 23

WILDLIFE ALL YEAR R OSTRICH FARMING History reveals that ostrich chicks were traded by the original Khoi inhabitants with the Dutch Settlers in 1652 and exported from Cape Town to Batavia (now Indonesia) in 1656. There were also exports to India and the Emperor of Japan in 1658. The first documented ostrich farm was established in the centre of Cape Town in 1679.

The majority of the seals on Duiker Island, out of Hout Bay Harbour, are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber.

The ostrich is the world’s largest living bird, averaging 2m (6.5ft) in height and weighing up to 156kg (344lb).

SHARK CAGE DIVING

BIG 5 SAFARI

Great white sharks are the apex predators of our oceans and Cape Town is one of the shark cage diving capitals of the world. Sharks are iconic and magnificent creatures. Experience a great white shark up close and personal with a shark diving or shark viewing tour (you don’t have to get in the cage!) and you do not need a scuba diving certificate to shark cage dive.

The phrase Big Five game was coined by white hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. The collection consists of the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros.

Great White Shark, Cage Diving takes place from April to September in False Bay (departs from Simon’s Town) and all year round from Gansbaai (2 hours from Cape Town).

Situated only 8 nautical miles (about 16km) from Simon’s Town, Seal Island is home to 75,000 Cape Fur Seals, 24 different bird species and the hunting ground of the Great White Shark. All year round we often encounter Dolphins, Humpback whales and Brydes whales. From July to November the Southern Right whales are plentiful in the bay and you can be assured of a sighting. During the winter months the Great White Sharks are extremely active around the island and we enjoy many sightings and often witness natural predations. The main breeding season for the Cape Fur Seal is November and December when almost 20 000 pups are born.

Leopard (Pantherapardus): The leopard is a large, carnivorous feline having either tawny fur with dark rosette-like markings or black fur. They are wary of humans and will take flight in the face of danger. The leopard is solitary by nature, and is most active between sunset and sunrise, although it may hunt during the day in some areas. Leopards can be found in the savanna grasslands, brush land and forested areas in Africa. The male leopard is less than half the size of a male lion. The leopard is the smallest of the big cats, and rarely exceeds 200 lb (91 kg). A visit to a South African reserve will, most likely, allow seeing not only the big 5 but other habitants of the African bush. Although the stock will be different between various reserves you’ll be able to watch: Giraffes, Elands, Springbok, Hippopotamus and Zebras.

African Big Five Game Species: African bush elephant (Loxodontaafricana): The African elephant is a very large herbivore having thick, almost hairless skin, a long, flexible, prehensile trunk, upper incisors forming long curved tusks of ivory, and large, fan-shaped ears. There are two distinct species of African elephant: African forest elephant (Loxodontacyclotis) and the African bush elephant (Loxodontaafricana). Black rhinoceros (Dicerosbicornis):The black rhinoceros is a large, thickskinned herbivore having one or two upright horns on the nasal bridge. Rhinoceros may refer to either black or white rhinoceros.

CAPE FUR SEAL

cover to stalk close as possible before making a final charge to catch their prey. Lions do not generally avoid confrontation, but will usually face the challenger. Lions are unpredictable and may charge when sufficiently annoyed or confronted by danger.

African cape buffalo (Synceruscaffer): The African or cape buffalo is a large horned bovid. Buffalo are sometimes reported to kill more people in Africa than any other animal, although the same claim is also made of hippos and crocodiles. It is considered the most dangerous of the Big Five, reportedly causing the most hunter deaths, with wounded animals reported to ambush and attack pursuers. Lion (Pantheraleo): The lion is a large carnivorous feline of Africa and northwest India, having a short, tawny coat, a tufted tail, and, in the male, a heavy mane around the neck and shoulders. A lion may attack without provocation, and is considered by many to be the best of the Big Five. Lions habituate the savanna where tall grasses, shrubs and bushes obscure and provide them cover and camouflage. This thick undergrowth is commonly referred to as jess. As lions are ambush hunters, they use this natural

CAPE PENINSULA BABOONS The Baboon Matters Trust comprises a handful of dedicated volunteers who are at the forefront of baboon conservation in South Africa. The goals of the trust include raising awareness for the plight of baboons as well as education and training so that sustainable solutions can be found for areas of conflict between man and baboon. On a practical level the trust makes provision for the rescue and care of injured or sick baboons, and aims to support rehabilitation centres that focus their attention on baboons. Cape Species: The Chacma Baboon (Papioursinus), also known as the Cape Baboon, is, like all other baboons, from the Old World monkey family. With a body length of up to 115 cm and a weight from 15 to 31 kg, it is among the largest and heaviest baboon species. The Chacma is generally dark brown to gray in color, with a patch of rough hair on the nape of its neck. Unlike the northern baboon species (the Guinea, Hamadryas, and Olive Baboons), Chacma males do not have a mane. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this baboon is its long, downward sloping face. Males can have canine teeth as long as 2 inches (longer than a lion’s canine teeth). Baboons are sexually dimorphic, males being considerably larger than females. The Chacma Baboon is found in southern Africa, rang-

ROUND ing from South Africa north to Angola, Zambia, and Mozambique. Size and color vary within that range. Chacmas usually live in social groups composed of multiple adult males, adult females, and their offspring. Occasionally, however, very small groups form that include only a single adult male and several adult females. Chacma troops are characterized by a dominance hierarchy. Female ranking within the troop is inherited through the mother and remains quite fixed, while male ranking is tenuous and changes often. Chacmas are unusual among baboons in that neither males nor females form strong relationships with members of the same sex. Instead, the strongest social bonds are often between unrelated adult males and females. (Wikipedia)

BOULDERS BEACH PENGUINS A visit to the famous Boulders Beach penguins should be part of every Cape Town itinerary. The penguins from this growing colony allow for close encounters with these famous sea birds - and most tourists fall helplessly in love with them. The story of the African penguins at Boulders Beach is one of remarkable urban colonization, but the species as a whole faces many threats and these aquatic flightless birds are listed as endangered. The story of the penguin colony in Cape Town started in 1983 when a pair was spotted on Foxy Beach at Boulders. Since then the colony has grown rapidly and now totals about 3 000 Boulders Beach penguins. The birds came to False Bay from Dyer Island after the reduction in commercial pelagic trawling, which has increased the supply of pilchards and anchovy - part of the penguins’ diet. Boulders Beach is located in Simon’s Town, just over the hilly peninsula from Cape Town. It’s easily accessible by bus, car, taxi or train.

Beer lovers can savour a soul-quenching sunset moment in the company of The Not-so-Small Shandygaff made from local craft Saggy Stone beer and served with meaty sliders. For the teetotalers, designated drivers and mommies-to-be, the resident barman will whip up a special non-alcoholic Mockingbird cocktail made with fresh watermelon to strut your summer feathers without the kick. The 5-star Robertson Small Hotel, carved out of a gracious 1909 Victorian manor house, clinched the title of South Africa’s Best Luxury Country Hotel for the second consecutive year at the 2012 World Luxury Hotel Awards. With 10 spacious luxury en-suite bedrooms, a gourmet signature restaurant – Reuben’s at The Robertson Small Hotel, a wellness room, tranquil gardens and shimmering pools, combined with offering unsurpassed attention to detail, the understated elegance of this hotel is refreshingly unique. Sunsational Signature Sundowners @ The Small cause a stir on Wednesdays from 17h00 to 19h30 and bookings are essential. For more information and bookings contact The Robertson Small Hotel at Tel: (+27)23 626 7200 or send an email to reservations@therobertsonsmallhotel.com. Reuben’s at The Robertson Small Hotel is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner whilst private lunch and dinner parties and group bookings can also be reserved.

WHAT TO SEE KIRSTENBOSCH The most beautiful garden in Africa. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Few gardens can match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch, against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. The Garden covers 36 hectares in a 528 hectare estate that contains protected mountainside supporting natural forest and fynbos along with a variety of animals and birds. Kirstenbosch lies in the heart of the Cape Floristic Region, also known as the Cape Floral Kingdom. In 2004 the Cape Floristic Region, including Kirstenbosch, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area at the top of the mountain is surprisingly large so leave enough time to stroll along the paths, enjoy the viewing platforms and soak up the vistas. There are also free guided walks on offer at 10h00 and 12h00 daily. The walks depart from the signposted meeting point outside the Top Station building. BOULDERS BEACH After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 www.sanparks.org Tel: 021 786 2329.

Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront www.robben-island.org.za Tel: 021 413 4220/1

But for those who do have some time... The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into the hinterland with their oxen and their wagons. SHOP KRUGERRAND

The Krugerrand is a South African gold coin, first minted in 1967 to help market South African gold. The coin, produced by the South African Mint, proved popular and by 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the gold coin market. The name itself is a portmanteau of Kruger (the man depicted on the obverse) and Rand, the South African unit of currency. Krugerrands are a popular way to invest in gold. By 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the gold coin market. That year South Africa introduced three smaller coins with a half-ounce, quarter ounce, and tenth ounce of gold. The success of the Krugerrand led to many other gold-producing nations minting their own bullion coins, such as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf in 1979, the Australian Nugget in 1981, the American Gold Eagle in 1986 and the British Britannia coin. Private mints have also attempted to capitalize off the popularity of the Krugerrand, minting gold and silver bullion rounds (the term coin denotes legal currency) in the style of the Krugerrand. The rounds often depict Paul Kruger and a springbok antelope, some even blatantly copying the same design as on the Krugerrands themselves, though the inscriptions are altered. These bullion rounds are not offered by the South African Mint or the Government of South Africa, and are therefore not official, have no legal tender value and cannot technically be considered coins. The Krugerrand is 32.6 mm in diameter and 2.74 mm thick. The Krugerrand’s actual weight is 1.0909 troy ounces (33.93 g). It is minted from gold alloy that is 91.67% pure (22 karats), so the coin contains one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of gold. The remaining 8.33% of the coin’s weight (2.826 g) is copper (an alloy known historically as crown gold which has long been used for English gold sovereigns), which gives the Krugerrand a more orange appearance than silver-alloyed gold coins. Copper alloy coins are harder and more durable, so they can resist scratches and dents. The South African Mint Company produces limited edition proof Krugerrands intended as collector’s items. These coins are priced above bullion value, although non-proof Krugerrands also have a premium above gold bullion value. They can be distinguished from the bullion Krugerrands by the number of serrations on the edge of the coin. Proof coins have 220 while bullion coins have 160. As the only means to legally possessing gold bullion, the Krugerrand offers a unique way of holding

34 / Hello Cape Town

your own gold. Krugerrands carry only a small premium over the value of their gold content. As the gold price is quoted internationally in terms of troy ounces, the value of Krugerrands can easily be determined at any time. As legal tender gold coins, Krugerrands can be bought from, or sold to thousands of gold dealing companies and their branches worldwide. Krugerrands are hard enough to resist normal scratching and denting - an important, practical feature, as soft 24 carat coins and bars are more easily damaged and generally require protective packaging. Krugerrands are easy to transport and store. Investgold Cape Town: 021 552 9200

ARTS AND CRAFTS No doubts about it – South Africans are a crafty bunch. The country’s people produce a remarkable range of arts and crafts, working from the pavements and markets of the big cities to deep rural enclaves, with every possible form of traditional artwork – and then some. In addition to the standard materials such as beads, grass, leather, fabric and clay, pieces are made using telephone wire, plastic bags, petrol cans and bottle tops – even food tin labels are used to create brightly coloured papier mache bowls. On sale on many a South African street corner are objects

PING made of wire, ranging from representations of the globe to cars and motorcycles – which are capable of manipulated movement – to joke cellphones and working radios. Shops, markets and collectives dealing in African craft are thriving, providing much-needed employment and income in communities such as Fugitive’s Drift in KwaZulu-Natal, which offers a huge variety of basketry, or the Northern Cape Schmidtsdrift community of displaced San people, who produce paintings that constitute an imaginative and highly coloured extension of ancient rock art.

OSTRICH LEATHER & MOHAIR Ostrich leather is the result of tanning skins taken from African ostriches farmed for their feathers, skin and meat. The leather is distinctive for its pattern of bumps or vacant quill follicles, ranged across a smooth field in varying densities. It requires an intricate, specialised and expensive production process making it costly as well as beautiful. Although the first commercial farming began in South Africa in 1850, the industry collapsed after World War I and the drop in demand for the feathers for fashionable hats and military uniforms. Other products were marketed, with each success battered by world events and droughts until now, when ostrich skin is globally available and seen as a luxury item in high-end demand. Leather came late in the story of ostrich farming but after a tannery was set up onsite, it went on to make an impact in European haute couture and in the U.S. for cowboy boots. Availability was artificially limited when ostrich leather was subject to a cartel monopoly through trade sanctions, and single export and distribution channels until the end of apartheid in 1993.

A high level of skill is brought to the production of work that has long been a part of African society, and has now found new commercial outlets. South African beadwork, once the insignia of tribal royalty alone, has today found a huge range of applications, from the creation of coverings for everything from bottles to matchboxes – and the reproduction of the red Aids ribbon in the form of small Zulu beadworks known as Zulu love letters. Basketry and ceramics, of course, were long ago brought to a pitch of perfection in traditional South African society, and the outgrowths of these forms today grace gallery plinths as often as they find a place on suburban shelves.(To read more: http:// www.southafrica.info) The Arts and Crafts markets in Cape Town: Green Market Square, in the square that dissects Burg Street and between Longmarket and Shortmarket streets, Cape Town CBD, Monday to Saturday: 9:00 and 16:00. After that and other factors, the South African government began to export stock allowing other countries to have their own ranches. Although wider production resulted in competition and lower prices, Klein Karoo Group remains the leading global producer. Today the industry is driven mostly by the leather and the meat, which is exported to all parts of the world. South Africa produces over 60% of the world’s ostriches and also has a distinct quality edge in the leather tanning process. Eleven years ago, Charles and Melony Biggs were farming ostrich, sheep and goats in the Graaff Reinet area in the Karoo. At first they exported skins to people he had met in the USA, where he had previously farmed ostrich for 4 years. They learned a lot in that time abroad, one thing being what we in South Africa had to offer and show off to the world in terms of leadership in Ostrich and Mohair. They started to seek for local manufacturers and work together with designers to present a classic collection that also presents a freshness and elegancy. In 2000, Karoo Classics opened its doors in Stellenbosch: “We had 30 handbags and six belts in stock, but 100% faith in the fantastic natural products made from ostrich leather and mohair”, says Charles. From the very beginning a policy of Proudly South Africa was adopted. They spent months looking for and visiting factories all over South Africa. The criteria were: simply, high quality at a reasonable price. Today they have a wonderful group of suppliers, from big factories to family businesses and individuals. In 2003, Karoo Classics opened in Cape Town and five years later in Franschhhoek. Today they have the world’s largest selection of ostrich leather goods, carrying over 1000 handbags alone.

OLD CASTLE BREWERY While Castle began making in roads into what had been almost entirely “lion country” work was began on the erection of the Castle Brewery in Woodstock. This brewery was to be sited alongside the new railway line as an advertisement for Castle beer –a sort of early billboard. The Castle Brewery was completed in 1901, designed by New York architect H. Steinmann and was opened on the 1st April 1902, several setbacks to its completion, being caused by the second Boer War. www.oldcastlebrewery.co.za 021 448 4500

CAPE TOWN DIAMOND MUSEUM Situated in the bustling heart of the world-famous Clock Tower precinct at the V&A Waterfront, the Cape Town Diamond Museum pays tribute to the world’s most precious gem, the diamond, and is a must-see for any visitor to Cape Town. Discover a 3 billion year old story unfold from a diamond’s formation to the final polished stone. THE OLD CITY HALL The Cape Town Diamond Museum also pays homage to the most famous South African diamonds, such as the 3,106 carat Cullinan rough diamond discovered in 1905 and showcases specimens of Kimberlite rock dating billions of years old. Lifesize replicas of the famous diamonds that have adorned royalty, the rich and the famous are also on display.

Built in 1905, the old City Hall in Darling Street is a mixture of Italian Renaissance and British colonial architecture. It is located on the Grand Parade to the west of the Castle of Good Hope and is built from honey-colored limestone imported from Bath in England. The 60m/200ft high bell-tower, with a carillon installed in 1923, was modeled on London’s Big Ben. The City Hall was the last major Victorian building to be erected in Cape Town. The City Hall’s carillon was installed as a WW1 war memorial, with 22 additional bells being added in 1925 with the visit of the Prince of Wales. Magnificent and imposing, the City Hall commemorates Kind Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, with its mosaic floors, marble staircase, stained glass windows and specially designed organ with 3165 pipes.

THE DRILL HALL AND CENTRAL LIBRARY The foundations of the City Hall were laid on 29th August 1900, and the building finally opened on 25th July 1905, by the Mayor Alderman Hyman Lieberman. It is built in an Italian Renaissance Style with a classical facade in a handsome campanile towering to a height of some 200ft. The exterior stonework is of sandstone and granite. The facade facing on Darling Street has a central feature surmounted by a pediment rising 82 feet above pavement level, the wings on either side are about 60ft in imposing clock tower houses the foursided City Hall clock built to scale and half the size of London’s Big Ben. The building is divided longitudinally, with one half of the building housing the Grand Hall and

TOURISM NEWS CAPE TOWN IS TOP BUSINESS PROCESS OUTSOURCING LOCATION On 25 October 2012, South Africa was announced as the winner of the National Outsourcing Association’s (NOA’s) Offshoring Destination of the Year Award. The award ceremony was held in London, and attended by the biggest Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) players from across the globe. Cape Town is South Africa’s leading city for BPO and has numerous call centres for new international companies. It is also the preferred location for the expansion of various domestic and international operations in recent years. Cape Town hosts a number of leading global brands including Amazon, ASDA, Bloomberg, British Gas, iiNet, Shell, Shop Direct and T-Mobile. Making Cape Town a destination in which the call centre industry can thrive ties in with the City of Cape Town’s efforts to build an Opportunity City, by creating an economically enabling environment in which business can thrive and jobs can be created. Cape Town’s BPO/call centre industry has grown from 20 428 agents in 2007/8, to 27 552 in 2011/12. This represents a year on year growth of 10.5% The offshoring sector saw even greater growth during this period, increasing from 2 963 to 4 727 agents within the same period, representing a year on year growth of 16.9%. Within the last year this sector has created 1 619 direct jobs, and has attracted investment to the value of R510 million. Business Process enabling South Africa (BPeSA) Western Cape is a City- funded body tasked with the facilitation of growth in this sector, and is the official trade and investment body for the BPO and offshoring/call centre industry in the Western Cape. This body runs the various programmes which have attracted the afore-mentioned international brands and outsourcers to Cape Town. “BPO and Offshoring is one of Cape Town’s key growth sectors, and we are constantly looking for ways to develop it. The City of Cape Town, together with BPeSA Western Cape, have worked tirelessly to make Cape Town the outsourcing destination of choice,” said Alderman Belinda Walker, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic, Environmental and Spatial Planning.

versity of Cape Town and the University of the Western Cape, as well as top FET colleges such as the False Bay College are situated in the city. The University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business consistently achieves a Global Top 100 ranking in the Financial Times rankings survey. This culture of academic excellence ensures that businesses can find the right people to take their business forward. - Cape Town shares many cultural similarities with the UK especially, but also with Australian and US markets, making it an ideal customer service destination for English voice-based interaction - In addition, Cape Town is well-positioned to service European markets in terms of time zones. Supporting this is the City’s broadband infrastructure investment. “R213 million has been allocated for the roll out of broadband infrastructure throughout the Metro. This investment will build-up extra data capacity in the city which will, in turn, boost our competitive advantage,” said Alderman DemetriQually, Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services. “The City’s investments in broadband infrastructure will yield considerable efficiency benefits for this sector particularly and reinforce our attractiveness as an outsourcing destination”, concluded Alderman Walker. TOURISM ARRIVALS UP 10.5% Tourist arrivals to South Africa grew by 10.5% over the first six months of this year, Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said on Sunday. “Despite the global economic downturn, our focused marketing efforts and the hard work of everyone in the tourism industry are paying dividends,” he said. Although the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) predicted a slowdown in global arrivals in the second half of this year, he was delighted with a very strong start in 2012, and was confident that it would be a year worth celebrating for the tourism industry. “We are very encouraged to see that our carefully formulated tourism growth strategy to increase

tourist arrivals to South Africa is yielding the desired results, with excellent growth achieved in the markets where we are actively marketing destination South Africa, and good returns being realised in markets that we have identified as sources of strong tourism potential for our country.” According to Statistics SA, the tourism figures indicated that South Africa experienced an excellent first half of the year, attracting 4,416,373 tourists to the country between January and June 2012, compared to 3,996,760 tourist arrivals for the same period in 2011. The tourism industry experienced particularly strong growth in overseas tourist arrivals, recording 17.1% growth in arrivals from outside the African continent. A total of 1,163,477 overseas tourist arrivals were recorded for the first six months of 2012, compared to 993,364 tourist arrivals for the corresponding period in 2011. Tourist arrivals from Asia grew by 40.7% and Central and South America by 54.4%. The minister said the launch of SA Airway’s direct flight between Beijing and Johannesburg in January this year had contributed to growth from this market, helping to meet some of the demand for destination South Africa in China. A total of 60,272 Chinese visitors came to South Africa in the first half of 2012, which represented a massive 68.4%growth compared to the first half of 2011, when South Africa received only 35,796 Chinese arrivals. South Africa was also benefiting from its marketing efforts and strong trade-relations work in other emerging markets, including India and Brazil. South Africa recorded 21.1% growth in arrivals from India for the first six months of this year, and a phenomenal 68.4% growth in arrivals from Brazil. “In the two short years since our successful hosting of the Fifa World Cup, Brazil emerged as one of South Africa’s most promising tourism markets, and we’ve followed the success of the tournament with strong trade work to capitalise on increased interest in our country from this important market,” Van Schalkwyk said.
