Le Gateau Chocolat and Jonny Woo will drag you through all the major musicals in a way that you`ll be screaming for more! The Nigerian-born Le Gateau Chocolat, who is an opera singer in his own right and Londonbased Jonny Woo, have teamed up for the most absurdly camp and thoroughly entertaining, homage to the modern musical.

Trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos.

THREE BLIND MICE 4 OCTOBER - 21 DECEMBER

Written in 1972, ‘Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act’ is set in apartheid South Africa, where relationships across the colour bar were a criminal offence. Two lovers – a coloured man and white woman meet secretly in the library where the woman works, to make love and share their hopes and fears. A neighbour reports them to the police who secretly photograph them from the informant’s backyard and eventually break in and arrest the couple under the inhuman and universally pilloried Immorality Act. The play is a compelling and deeply moving love story in which the physically and emotionally naked lovers expose not only their bodies but also their deepest longings for personal and emotional freedom.

from refresh to fresh

Eagles’ Nest boutique wine estate, mid road between Constantia and Hout Bay, has stood its ground for centuries yet evolved into an awardwinning winery only in recent years. In the early days, when the trip from Cape Town to Hout Bay lasted a week, the farm was growing fruit and vegetables for the travellers and were known as a stopping point to re-stock and for the rest to sell and export to far markets. Located high on the slopes of the Table Mountain National Park, atop the Constantia wine valley end, Eagles’ Nest has tailored agriculture and nature in a delicate balance. After the farm succumbed to a devastating fire in the year 2000, new action was implemented and new life was introduced. While the working farm was transformed from orchards to vines, a great deal and consideration was given to its geographical location and a deeper kind of responsibility to the environment was placed. Bordering with the Cape Floral Kingdom, of which big chunks were also destroyed in the fire, along with natural forest, Eagles’ Nest took upon themselves to prioritise the re-establishment of natural fynbos on the estate.

12 l

Hello Cape Town October 2019

On the mountain, 25 000 Silver Tree seeds were planted as well as thousands of Proteas, ferns and other fynbos indigenous to the area. Eagles’ Nest now proudly houses one of the largest Silver Tree plantations in South Africa. They also stand up to their name by being a firm supporter of the Western Cape Raptor Research Program. The Little Eagle range of wines is proudly associated with the Western Cape Raptor research program, whose activities include the conservation of the last breeding pair of Black Eagles’ located in the Table Mountain National Park. A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of these wines goes towards this cause. Other than monitoring the nest during breeding season, the program performs important conservation activities such as tagging nestlings in order to understand their distribution after they leave the nest. A viewing platform has also been established, which allows birdwatchers to view the nest from a suitable distance, without disturbing the eagles’ activities. This assists in promoting public awareness of eagle conservation, whilst hopefully redirecting misguided people from approaching the nest site inappropriately and disturbing the eagles’ activities.

The vines were planted with a boutique approach to start with and this chosen path proved itself with their 2006 Shiraz, released in 2007, named the best in the world! They keep maintaining this level of excellence and their wines are served in the best restaurants in South Africa, including the limited wine list of The Test Kitchen, ranked number 22 on a list of the 50 best restaurants in the world. Since it is the only north facing estate in the Constantia Wine Valley, they actually planted the vines backwards, creating distinct flavours in between this small, 9 estates wine route. The red wines are laid to fermentation exclusively in French oak barrels with the wine maker actually limiting himself to experiment only between different French producers. Another advantage for the scale of this estate lies in the wine tasting experience offered to visitors. You get to taste the full portfolio, all wines of excellence, no one excluded. It is a truly indulging experience to be taken either as a one spot driving destination or as a hop off point on the City Sightseeing Peninsula tour - having the advantage of not driving thereafter. The estate is open 7 days a week, 10:00- 16:30 and is child and pet friendly. The tasting room serves two warm soups during winter, 4 platter varieties and a few extras to nibble on. The room spills onto a beautiful picnic ground with shaded tables and a rolling lawn for leisurely summer days. An elevated section of the public space is an additional open bar for those who would like to slowly indulge the wine and not much else, or for small corporate functions. A decadent experience comes in the form of the VIP tasting: up on the slopes, among the vines, two long tables are situated to host up to 24 guests for a private tasting. The exceptional wines have a view to equal with the entire Constantia Valley, Cape Flats and on clear days one can view a full panorama from Gansbaai through the Stellenberg Mountains all the way to De Grendel in the Durbanville Valley. The VIP tasting requires pre-booking. Hello Cape Town October 2019 l

an oasis in the klein karoo

Two and a half hours drive from Cape Town, getting off the N1 and travelling into the veld, nothing prepares you for the blanket of serenity and tranquility that surrounds you once you’ve reached Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve and the Western Cape Cheetah Conservation Centre. The peaceful, main camp offers a range of double and family rooms, all scattered in small blocks among a magnificent indigenous garden and includes a pool, a few outdoor seating and dining areas that the staff interval in between, for guests to enjoy different settings for the length of their stay and a dining room to keep guests out of the cold desert nights. The friendly staff serves breakfast and lunch in a generous buffet style and dinner is a fine dining South African experience. With the Camp being home to all the staff, once or twice a week the rangers that drove you earlier pitch in to help with dinner in order to share the load. Family friendly all the way through. The east edge of the camp is a leap in the luxury the reserve offers - a raw of standalone Ambassador Suites, these chalets with a full wall opened to the view of the desert, is only interrupted by a semi-private pool, solely for the guests of the suites.

Hello Cape Town October 2019

The rooms are modern and indulging with each of them including a staircase to its roof - furnished to enjoy sundowners or sublime star gazing. Guests to the Ambassador Suites get their own tented dining room with the utmost privacy and attention. And then there’s the Tented Camp. A whole new level of Safari Camping. Secluded, surprising and divine. Leaving your own transport at the main camp, guests to the tented camp are driven into the reserve itself. In the heart of the bush, you reach Kuganha. A built path is the back bone of this dreamy place. On one side, 3 large tents, each for a couple, is entered through an elevated balcony, followed by a dreamy, king sized bed that hides a semi-open bathroom in the back. A clever design that combines the feeling of indoors and outdoors with superb details and rough materials used delectably. The other side of the path is a structure of 3 gazebos, one for every tent, for dining. The path ends with a small pool that is located just above the reserve’s gully and since it’s not fenced, the two elephants on the property often come visit for their morning drink, reaching the water with their trunks. At the tented camp, guests enjoys their own chef on-site with 3 fine dining meals prepared especially for them, a Boma to warm up at and sit for predinner drinks and a small spa building that comes as a bonus service for visitors that stay two nights or more. The safari experience for all guests includes all the Big 5: lions, elephants, rhinos, Cape buffalo and leopards. You will also see hippos, elands, springbok, ostrich, zebras and giraffes. Inverdoorn is a free roaming reserve, one of the largest in the Western Cape, with many of the animals rescued from stressed farms or pre–owners. All the animals on the reserve are endemic species to the region, reintroduced to the area by dedicated staff, and kept on diets as natural as possible. The cheetah rescue and rehabilitation center is a great source of pride to the reserve. The cheetah is one of the great animals that Inverdoorn has rescued and returned to the region. With less than 10 000 cheetahs left in the world today, conservation initiatives such as Western Cape Cheetah Conservation has pioneered their way forward for cheetah survival. Rescued animals undergo 4 stages of rehabilitation from undomesticating them, through teaching prey and running, re-introduce them to the wild and alienate them from humans, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into the wild. The evening safari includes watching the cheetahs run / hunt training and feeding, witnessing their ability to reach 120 km/h speed and to acknowledge the unprecedented work being done on the reserve to give a new chance on wildlife to some forcibly domesticated animals. In a manner of speaking, one might say, that Inverdoorn Game Reserve is an oasis for both visitors and game animals, bringing them back home, giving them the peaceful life that they deserve. Coming across cubs, young and newborns in the different herds, looks like mission accomplished. Rates and booking are available online at www.inverdoorn.com.

following the terroir

At a lunch held at Salsify restaurant at The Roundhouse in Camps Bay, we were introduced to The Mentors series of wine. 10 of which, recently achieved a score of 90+ by the acclaimed British Master of Wine, Tim Atkin. A notable event for any winery and wine producer in the world. The news is even more sensational once one learns that The Mentors is produced and enabled by KWV, the South African wine conglomerate with the largest cellar in the Southern hemisphere, situated in the heart of Paarl. With being the size it is, over many years KWV is known for tutoring and nurturing young and trainee wine makers. Not only by teaching them the practice but also for allowing apprentices to experiment with new, out of the box, ideas for delivering commercial wines. The Mentors cellar, a small reserve in the 24 hectares cellar, was the place to experiment with different coopers and winemaking techniques, to discover the best ways to work with new cultivars, or to try new yeasts and perfect natural ferments. The insights from this unique cellar, often home to post-graduate oenology students trialing pioneering new winemaking methods, were initially put to use in KWV’s extensive range of wines. But the winemaking team soon realised that the boundary-breaking approach in The Mentors cellar was leading to remarkable terroir-driven wines that deserved their own spotlight. Though the first wines were bottled in 2006, it was in 2009 that The Mentors range took flight.

l Hello Cape Town October 2019

Combined with the already existing approach of planting the right variety in a specific geographic location to get the best possible grape of the land, they have managed to bind a group of niche verities from what is exceptional in a specific year. All fermented in wood barrels and nurtured by a dedicated wine maker, creating iconic wines. White wines are going into older barrels so the wood won’t overpower the taste of the wine. Moreover, The Mentors winemaker, Izele van Blerk, happily shares that the way of coming to light of these wines is so boundary and traditional rule breaking that it is a miracle she still holds her position in a big, corporate winery. The Mentors is a journey through the handpicked vines and plots from all over the Cape Winelands. It is made possible because farmers call the winery’s viticulturist to come and check when they grow something that is worth the brand. From the land it is picked, refined and elevated to meet its best potential.

KWV Winemaker Izele van Blerk

The Mentors portfolio consists of eight permanent wines- Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Noir, Petit Verdot, Pinotage, Orchestra and Canvas. Van Blerk and the winemaking team have the enviable freedom of pursuing innovative new varietals and blends from every harvest. Each year they take their cue from the vineyards of the Cape winelands, in deciding which wines deserve a space in The Mentors cellar. It is all about what the land through us over centuries of wine making. The range is mostly available on-line and at the KWV Wine Emporium that is situated at Kohler Street, Paarl. first thursday

…AND ITS’ SPRING EDITION First Thursdays is a public event and free to attend. Art galleries and cultural events around Cape Town’s artistic hives and accrue in 3 different location: central city, East city & in the suburbs. Galleries stay open until 9pm or later on the first Thursday of every month, allowing anyone to explore the city on foot and experience the cultural wealth this city has to offer. There is no tour, schedule, or guided walk; that is up to you. First Thursday orgenizers simply help you figure out what to see and where to go by highlighting what is happening. This event, started a few years back, mainly in the city bowel, evolved to become a bench mark for galleries to replace their exhibitions and for many of them to use these marked days as a time to relaunch new installations. Thereafter all exhibitions are open for viewing during business hours. Next two First Thursday events are scheduled for 3 October & 7 November. Moreover, since a night out in town is already a cause for celebration, restaurants and bars in the same area tend to add some extra zest and entertainment on the evenings. Fashion designers outlets also joined the party by staying open and welcome in visitors that are usually busy working during their normal opening hours. Some examples of the ones that caught our eye: CITY BOWL Ebony Curated in 67 Loop Street. On Show: Embolden - A solo exhibition by Kimathi Mafafo. Mafafo is a multidisciplinary artist whose practise ranges from embroidery and oil painting to installation. Born in the semi-arid Northern Cape, Mafafo’s verdant imaginings, characterised by lush greenery and sensuous drapery, are far removed from the dusty mining town where she grew up. Inspired by stories of women around her, Mafafo likens the woman in her narratives to flowers slowly blossoming against all odds, subtly criticising traditional gender roles while at the same time encouraging women to realise their own strength. In her latest body of works, Mafafo will exhibit both figurative and the abstracted embroidered panels which were first introduced at the 2019 Cape Town Art Fair. THK Gallery in 52 Waterkant Street. On Show: Reflecting on August - Group Exhibition till 25 Oct. ‘Reflecting on August’ brings together seven artists from August House.

Hello Cape Town October 2019

August House, located in Johannesburg’s inner city, is an artistic space that fuels inventiveness and encourages thinking through incubation and collaboration. Looking at creativity and its relationship with inspiration, Reflecting on August aims to link the different practices and processes of each artist to their respective studios, as well as to their work, created surrounded by others, in the heart of a highly urbanised, intense, city center. Within this exhibition, the curator reflect on shared spaces and environment as a common fertile ground triggering thoughts, differences and in the case of August House: singular art. EAST CITY OPEN 24 HOURS IN 50 Harrington Street. On Show: Sans - Group Exhibition. The evolution of art has come a long way. Traditionalists who scorned rebels. Rebels who became popular, who frowned upon pop, who drove contemporaries to accept all forms “sans” hierarchy and prejudice. OPEN 24 HRS has a purist’s ideal of bringing the viewer in and allowing them to determine effect. Here, we bring a body of work that unpicks the traditional theme and embraces alternative medium and cast. Established artists exhibited alongside new and young artists, with equal voice. They embrace these differences and encourage the viewer to experience ‘sans’ any preconceived literate justification.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital
