CELEBRATING 300 YEARS OF DE GRENDEL’S HERITAGE De Grendel celebrates its 300th anniversary this year, marking three centuries of a Cape landmark whose story – and that of its fourth-generation owners, the Graaff family – is deeply woven into South Africa’s history. The name De Grendel, originally De Grendel van de Tijgerberg, means “latch” or “lock” in old Dutch, signifying its position as the gateway for farmers and traders from Cape Town over the Tygerberg hills to the inland settlements of Durbanville and Stellenbosch. One of Cape Town’s oldest farms, the land was granted in 1720 to prosperous businessman Claas Meyboom and was bought in 1891 by David De Villiers Graaff, laying the foundations of a family legacy of stewardship of De Grendel and a defining role in the business, political and agricultural landscape of South Africa. De Villiers Graaff died at De Grendel at the age of 85, in 1999, and was succeeded by his son David De Villiers Graaff as 3rd Baronet and owner of De Grendel. The farm’s history shows that grapes were grown there in the early years but wiped out by the phylloxera plague of the 1890s and it was Sir David who returned viniculture and winemaking to De Grendel in 2000. De Grendel’s current owner, the 4th Baronet Sir De Villiers Graaff, said the milestone anniversary was a time for both celebration and reflection. “De Grendel as a farm is 300 years old and as a family we have been responsible for stewardship of this unique piece of South Africa’s agricultural history for more than a century. Each generation has made its own mark and brought something new to the farm, as we strive to conserve the legacy and the environment while also looking to the future. “Our vision and our responsibility is to continue building De Grendel as a sustainable and successful enterprise at the centre of a community of all who live and work here, with some of the staff having roots on De Grendel stretching back five generations,” he said. De Grendel today is a rural retreat in the midst of urban sprawl, stretching out over some 300 hectares of the fynbos-covered Tygerberg Hill at 350m above sea level, commanding sweeping views across Table Bay to Table Mountain, and is the entry point to the Durbanville wine route. To celebrate their 300th anniversary, De Grendel released the limited production Proposal Hill Brut Rosé, available now at www.degrendel.co.za .

lottering saving us from ourselves

A remedy you most definitely need. It might not be the vaccine for the pandemic, but it so brilliantly treats all the symptoms. Marc Lottering’s current show at The Baxter in Cape Town, Lottering On Lockdown, is an hour and a half long breeze of words that puts the chaos and uncertainty of the last few months at ease and into perspective. Marc managed to have grown men stomp their feet, constantly clap and rock back and forth in their chairs, cheering to his punches as he faces the reality of our near past. From forced lockdown sobriety to the disproportional attention advertising received, including the Clicks hair saga, from constant home cooking to sanitised deliveries, from dwindling down rent which actually means location and an overall upgrade (Yes, we know.), to home workouts and cautious shopping. From beautiful Instagram life to Twitter selfjustification. It is all there and then some. And strangely enough, it makes sense. In the middle of it all he sits at the grand piano, playing and singing. Marc will accidently force you to step out of your limbo for a while and let you see it all through his lens, just before you go back to your next daily task. A Capetonian, a South African, a diva, a grand entertainer. They all take to the stage, wearing black and a pair of takkies. And you can get the t-shirt too. Lottering On Lockdown will run at The Baxter Theatre till 9 January 2021.

Cricket South Africa out for a duck, Trumpeting leaders blowing hot air and the only response we have had so far is to dance the Jerusalema (which is how drunk people pronounce Julius Malema after 2am in the morning). But now Committie explores how we can stay sane and healthy in body, mind and soul with his usual madcap verbal wit and physical comedy shenanigans. Our intrepid jester tries to understand wellness coaches, explores the world of Tik-Tok videos, unpacks how we thought the world would end versus how it’s actually happening and may or may not have found the missing R500 billion promised to the nation! Playing to only 50% capacity every night under the new regulations and following all COVID-19 health protocols this promises to be a superb evening of laughter and the best live entertainment you could have as the world comes crashing down around you. heartwarming tribute to the Cape Coloured community and all it holds dear. From here, we sail away on her Tableboat down a roaring river, over an impossibly high waterfall and down into an unfathomable underworld. Like a virus in a host cell, she disrupts everything, multiplying here, depositing stories there and all the time strewing the clamorous jangling questions which echo in her head. Then she encounters GreenTights, the warrior who answers; “No moral flexibility. There can be none. Burn it. Burn it all to ashes.”

HOUT BAY’S BEAUTY FROM A FRESH PERSPECTIVE The Lookout Deck Hout Bay arguably boasts one of the best views in the Western Cape. Situated on the water’s edge in the Hout Bay harbour, the restaurant boasts breath taking mountain and ocean views.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital

tram your way

Just like the pioneers of the winelands, two and a half century ago, the Franschhoek Wine Tram took a leap over the past year to make your experience with them even more luxurious and dreamy. To begin with, their website offers detailed information in 8 common languages for travellers to easily explore and choose from their different options. Getting to one of their terminals is also swiftly sorted. They now also offer exclusive transfers from Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl and surrounds at very affordable rates which collects you at your specified address. Transfers can be added to any of the experiences during the booking process at an additional cost. You can also choose to take a City Sightseeing Red, double decker coach. A bus departs every Saturday at 9:00 AM from the V & A Waterfront tour office. At 4:00 PM, head back to the Franschhoek Wine Tram station for your transfer back to Cape Town. You are welcome to purchase wine at any of the estates and leave your purchase with one of the tram drivers, who will ensure you are reunited with your purchase at the time of boarding the motor-coach back home. This also applies for sole tram users: wine bottles can be left with the conductor and will be available for collection upon your return to the ticket office. And then there is the new terminal. Located on the corner of Main Road and Cabriere Street in the town’s center. Arrive at the terminal early and grab a coffee and Beignet- their trademark, classic French pastry. The gift shop on location also enjoys special added value: products are both made by local craftsmen and women and profits are distributed and shared with local charities. All good reasons to get your wine sack and some other memorabilia at their shop. Your tram ticket will now be accompanied with a daily offering card from different wine estate and stops along the routes and while you enjoy the scenery on deck, a complimentary wine tasting is offered.
