hello spring! ‘Tis the time of blooming and flowering which naturally it makes Spring the most glamourous season in the Cape. To the tiny budding of leaves on the lush trees to faint scent of rose from the geraniums that lights up the north face of Table Mountain. Take in the endless beds of daisies up the West-Coast and inlands, the majestic hydrophytes in our wetlands and the freshest shades of green with the blossom of the vines all over the winelands. Spring is truly the season of celebration of nature and her gifts. South Africa has the third-highest level of biodiversity in the world, thanks in no small part to the Cape floral kingdom. The Cape floristic region is one of the six floral kingdoms in the world. This biodiversity hotspot has the highest concentration of plant species in the world. It contains an estimated 9 500 species of which 70% do not grow anywhere else in the world! Here are some of the highlights that indicate that spring has truly begun to sprung: NATIONAL PARKS AND NATURE RESERVES Namaqua National Park, known as one of the Cape most unforgettable landscapes, is located about 2.5 hours north of Cape Town. With its winter rainfall, it conserves the world’s richest succulent flora. During early August and September, seemingly overnight, the dusty valleys of Namaqualand are transformed into a wildflower wonderland. Come daylight, the fresh breath of Spring, it semms by magic that a tapestry of vivid colours unfold invitingly along the winding roads of the Namaqua National Park. Butterflies, birds and long-tongued flies dance around among the flowers, savouring the abundance and diversity. Take in the breathtaking sights of the valleys filled with Namaqualand daisies and other spring flowers that shout with sheer beauty. Next to some eye-catching succulents, you may also find the world’s smallest tortoise, the Namaqua Speckled Padloper foraging quietly in the shade of petals. Namaqualand is home to the richest bulb flora of any arid region in the world and more than a 1 000 of its estimated 3 500 plant species are found endemically. Namaqua national park has a Caracal 4x4 Eco Route and biking & walking trails to truly enjoy the fauna & flora – why not bring those binoculars and enjoy some birding? There is also a variety of accommodation options include camping sites and tented luxury camps trough SANParks. Visit www.sanparks.org/parks/namaqua/ for more. SPRING AT KIRSTENBOSCH Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden lives up to its reputation as the most beautiful garden in Africa and one of the great botanic gardens of the world – It also lies just 15 minutes away from Cape Town CBD! Kirstenbosch Gardens has an incredible display of a wide variety of the unique plant life of the Cape Flora (known as fynbos) many of which are in flower in Spring - and this is an excellent time to see the pincushions which enliven the Protea Garden with bright oranges, yellows, peach and red, some keeping going into early summer. You will also see many conebushes, proteas and a wide variety of other fynbos shrubs blooming proudly. Plants from all the diverse regions and biomes of southern Africa are grown at Kirstenbosch, including a near-complete collection of cycads. The Botanical Society Conservatory is a custom-built glasshouse to grow and display plants from the arid regions that cannot survive outdoors. There are over 7 000 species in cultivation, including many rare and threatened species. Namaqualand daisies in all colours of the rainbow, dance in the breeze and follow the sun with open faces. You will see Ursinia (yellow, orange), Dimorphotheca (white, orange), Felicia (blue), Arctotis (orange, cream, red, bronze), Senecio (purple, white) and Gazania (yellow, orange). Look closer to see many other annuals like the bokbaaivygies and the blue flax in amongst the daisies. Many of the wonderful bulbs flower in the spring. You are sure to see the cool elegant arum and tall spikes of Watsonias in the garden. To see the amazing variety and the beautiful shapes and colours of the Cape bulbs, including Moraea, Babiana, Sparaxis and Lachenalia, visit the Kay Bergh Bulb House in the Botanical Society Conservatory, where they are on display, safe from the ever hungry porcupines. More than just a garden, Kirstenbosch is part of a nature reserve. The 36-hectare garden is part of a 528-hectare estate that contains protected mountainside supporting natural forest and fynbos along with a variety of animals and birds. weekend scene VENDOR OF THE MONTH BAY HARBOUR - THE MARKET OF HOUT BAY

at BAY HARBOUR MARKET Linda McKeever has always been passionate about soup. Linda lived in New York for several years and enjoyed the wide array of different ethnics foods and became determined to bring her own special qualities of cooking to a South African audience. When Linda hosted a dinner party in August 2011 in Cape Town, and as a starter served a delicious Seafood soup with the freshest of ingredients, the response from the guests was extraordinary. Someone piped up that it was the best soup that he had tasted in the world! Well, such a reaction needed follow up, so Linda and her partner, Christian visited the owners of The Bay Harbour Market with thermoses full of different soups to taste. The response was positive and that very next Saturday ZOOP! was open for business selling its home made wares from a tiny table within the market. We were open! Sales climbed rapidly as our precious clients loved the taste, and today we manufacture the soup from a fully equipped kitchen next to The Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay, South Africa.

The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family. How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go. Cool-Runnings, Toboggan Family Park lies just 25km from Cape Town city centre. Visit www.cool-runnings.co.za for more. Visitors can spend time in the Reptile Bay where Madagascan reptiles (chameleons and plated lizards), tortoises, Australian skinks and bearded dragons and a couple of noisy parrots are housed. A large aviary hosts all kinds of ex-pet birds such as budgies, love birds, pigeons and doves, as well as guinea pigs with wild hair! Inspired by his ingenuity, where a rusted pipe forgotten on the roadside would become a ramp or a jack, he fast became curious of the everyday geometry of things and objects; constantly observing how lines make up form, playing with proportions and mathematical equations.

Samosa stailess

These formative years are now the foundations upon which this Cape Town designer has built his aesthetic on. Preferring to use industrial materials and everyday processes, it all started with ply-laminated Formica, reminiscent of the pragmatism of his grandmother’s kitchen. He now bends steel and juxtaposes it with a patina finish, brass or marble. One of Xandre’s most sought-after pieces is the Samosa Table, which he explains set the precedent for his most recent designs. It solved the challenge of designing a form with one continuous sheet of metal with multiple bends, which in turn began a way of thinking about form following function, a true challenge in the design-thinking world. His latest piece, the Vos Altar, is an ode to his maternal grandfather. ‘Vos’ is his mother’s family name and the piece is an ‘altar’ to his memory. When his grandfather was a child, a child, he would carve his name into the piece of slate at the river in the baking Karoo sun. This three-meter monolithic table with the slate top is an altar to his memory and has become an iconic piece in the Southern Guild gallery. This piece took him to Design Miami Basel, a career highlight for the designer to have exhibited alongside modernist great and design hero, Rietveld.

WATERKLOOF ESTATE EXCURSIONS CELEBRATE THE CIRCLE OF LIFE

Waterkloof biodynamic wine estate invites nature-lovers who seek an exceptional experience to visit the farm and celebrate the full circle of life. “Circle of Life” is a central motif to Waterkloof’s farming and winemaking philosophyand for that they offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the farm and its mountainous surroundings through a diverse program of superlative activities. The two-hour Circle of Life Biodynamic Tour takes ecoenthusiasts and lovers of pure, untamed wines in particular behind the scenes of Waterkloof’s green way of life on the crest of the Schapenberg in the Helderberg. Personally conducted by the estate’s farm manager Christiaan Loots – the driving force behind Waterkloof’s cutting edge, environmentally responsible farming methods – these insightful edu-eco tours show how biodynamic and organic farming is really done. It took Christiaan and his “green brigade” ten years to transform the once depleted, conventionally farmed land covered in alien tree species, infected vines and eroded roads, into the healthy, sustainable life-force it is today. With groups limited to 12 people, you’ll learn more about amongst others, its beautiful Percheron horses that are used instead of tractors, to plough, compost, spray and harvest. The estate’s new Tour With Us experience offers a more exclusive and all-round glimpse of Waterkloof by including the biodynamic tour with a visit to the cellar; an informative wine tasting; and, a two-course lunch at the estate’s Restaurant. Groups are limited to six people to keep it personal. Other guided tours that provide insight into the farm and its eco-friendly approach include a full-circuit, two-hour Guided Walk and the Ride With Us that explores the Schapenberg’s dramatic surroundings on horseback: gets you into the saddle for a picturesque, 60-minute trail ride through the area and end with a leisurely, two-course lunch at Waterkloof. All excursions must be pre-booked. For bookings, dates and terms and conditions, contact Zandri at Tel: 021 858 1491 or send email to zandri@waterkloofwines.co.za. they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. Not to forget, you can also spot these pups at Robben Island (Dutch for ‘seal island’) You are guaranteed to encounter pod of Cape Furs cavorting about. African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals!

Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world.

The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks.

Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate.

The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area.

The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land

Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose!

You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Great White Shark Cage Diving in Gaansbaai Looking for a heart-pumping adrenaline-spiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras! Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and unique lot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.

5 safaris

Who comes to South Africa and doesn’t go on a safari?

A literal bucket-list experience, we have two breath-taking game reserves we recommend that will not only give you the opportunity to see the exclusive Big-5, other wildlife and flora, but an experience you will take home with you and cherish forever:

Accommodation include premier, family or luxury chalets.

Aquila Private Game Reserve Published in the “World’s 21 favourite things to do in Cape Town” Aquila Private Game Reserve is recognised as a major Cape Town tourist attraction. Aquila offers you a unique opportunity to experience the Big-5: lions, rhino, buffalo, elephants and leopard up close. Additional wildlife and flora is available to view on our once-in-a-lifetime game drives. The Reserve offers a wide variety of safaris and other activities on offer like 4 x 4 trails, fishing and themed weekend breakaways.

Big 5 Game Reserve less than two hours’ drive from the city.

There is a great emphasis placed on a wildlife conservation educational experience and doing so offers visitors a complimentary educational introduction to their cheetahs. Cheetahs are captive bred and strictly controlled in the interest of cheetah survival worldwide. Aside from the Big 5, Aquila is home to hippo, giraffe, buck and over 170 different species of bird!

Inverdoorn Game Reserve Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife.

Iziba Safari Lodge offers complete relaxation in stylish accommodation.

The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn.

According to a Survey that was conducted in the UK on 1500 female travellers, it was revealed that 22% would not use sunscreen and provided the following reasons: They are of opinion that they do not burn; Sunscreen is too expensive; The sunscreen does not work. Based on the above it is important that the emphasis should be placed on the importance of daily Solar Ultraviolet Radiation [DUVR].

O n D e c e m b e r 3 , 1 9 6 7 t h e w o r l d ’s f i r s t h u m a n h e a r t transplant was performed at the renowned Groote S c h u u r H o s p i t a l i n C a p e To w n . T h e o p e r a t i o n w a s considered a success and a medical milestone. The man who performed this feat of pioneering surgery and led the world into an era of sophisticated medical advances was Christiaan Barnard, the surgeon who dared. To d a y T h e H e a r t o f C a p e To w n M u s e u m h o n o u r s the skill and wisdom of the heart transplant team, the courage of the recipient, the generosity of the d o n o r ’s f a t h e r a n d t h e m e m o r y o f t h e y o u n g d o n o r herself.

Those people who have intermittent DUVR are more likely to develop basal cell Cancer or skin malignant melanoma than those people who have a continuous lifetime exposure as they are more likely to develop squamous cell Carcinoma. Melanoma numbers are growing more rapidly than any other cancer in the UK, USA and Australia and are doubling every one or two decades. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) concept The sun protection factor [SPF]is a figure calculated by the amount of Ultra Violet Radiation [UVR] required to cause sunburn on the protected skin with sunscreen applied relative to the amount of UVR required to cause sunburn on the unprotected skin (without sun screen). SPF is not related to time of sun exposure but to amount and intensity which varies from time of day and latitude in the world where sun exposure is occurring.

Experience the drama of that night in fully restored operating theatres where the surgery took place. A fully guided 2 hour tour describes the electrifying events with the help of life-sized silicone models and replicas of important scenes.

Logically a higher SPF provides more sunburn protection and for a greater period of time. It also protects against UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate deeper and are associated with aging and skin cancers. UVA protection should be at least 1/3 of the SPF and is measured by a star rating system. The ideal product would have SPF 30 plus a 4-5 star rating. Most people only apply half of what is needed. Application guide:

Guided tours begin at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 (17:00 tours by appointment only)

RAVEN Collection for woman who are not afraid to dance in the moonlight

Black Betty Written by Genevieve Putter

For Cape Town based jewellery brand Black Betty, the founding premise, which launched the business, is that precious gems find their owners. Four years later, Black Betty has stayed true to this whilst evolving and maturing its sister brand, Black Gold.

Kristin Weixelbaumer, Creative Director of Black Betty and Black Gold has just returned to wintery Cape Town from San Diego, bright eyed and sun-drenched. Her blonde, long-limbed surfer-girl vibe made even more entrancing by the flecks of gold and gem colours that flicker from her bejewelled fingers and gazelle–like neck. Aside from catching some West Coast waves and getting a golden Californian tan, the reason for her trip was that the fashion film she produced and directed for her inaugural collection for Black Gold, called Raven, was nominated in four awards categories at the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival, held in July in the Californian city.

The film, entitled, A Story About Her, was an exercise in roping in the right people, with the right attitude, most of who were friends and acquaintances of Kristin’s. ‘It started with the lead actress, model Zigi Strydom, she inspired the whole project as I was looking to do something different for marketing the Black Gold brand with the launch of its first range, Raven. I met Zigi and her husband Warren and they epitomised the look and feel of Raven - the whole thing came together from there,’ says Kristin. The film started getting a lot of attention at this year’s Mercedes Benz Bokeh South Africa International Film Festival where Zigi was nominated for Best Actress. ‘I decided to do a fashion film together with a photographic shoot because film allows for the “feeling” of a brand to be communicated to viewers in a more meaningful way than just images. It hits home on a more personal level, and has the ability to take the viewer on a journey,’ she says. With a background in design and art direction, Kristin launched Black Betty in 2012 soon after her wanderlust for travel, mysticism and gemstones converged in Northern India where she discovered the centuries old traditions of gem craftsmanship. Since then, she’s launched numerous collections each with their distinct identity yet all based on the same principle that wearing a piece of the earth is a priveledge that should be celebrated. ‘I believe jewellery shouldn’t be mere decoration. When a mutual respect exists between the designed piece and it’s owner, one honors the origin of the material, and its inherent providence.’ As with former collections, Raven, is a premium range of bespoke pieces. Black and white diamonds set in either silver or gold have been designed with a mythical narrative comprising totemic symbols such as the snake, the skull, the feather, and the arrow. What distinguishes it from the other collections however, is that it’s more grown up and has an element of mystery to it. ‘Raven is a revelation, and celebraion, of our shadow self, the darker side of human consciousness that I want to encourage people to embrace,’ says Kristin. ‘True knowledge of self can only begin once we embrace our darkest fears and desires, and the Raven collection manifests this awareness.’ To watch the fashion film Kristin directed and produced go to blackbettydesign.com All Black Gold & Blakc Betty’s Collections available at The Black Betty Studio - 53 Wale Street, The Black Betty Kiosk at the Waterfront and online: www.blackbettydesign.com

what to see Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015, www.tablemountain.net

There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. Operating Hours: Sept-Mar (Summer) Mon-Sun: 08:00-19:00, Apr-Aug (Winter) Mon-Sun: 08:00-18:00, Conservatory Mon-Sun: 09:00 -17:00. The southern tip of the African continent is the meeting place of two mighty and bountiful oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. The Two Oceans Aquarium is ideally positioned to showcase the incredible diversity of marine life found in these two oceans. The Aquarium holds over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins can be seen in this spectacular underwater nature reserve. The two ocean aquarium has established itself as a key player in raising environmental awareness through its high-quality exhibits, conservation and education programmes. Operating Hours: The Aquarium is open every day (365 days a year, including all public holidays) from 09:30 until 18:00. Tel: 021 418 3823. www.aquarium.co.za

There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman

funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.

After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

Constantia Valley is the wine route at the heart of the Mother City (or at least a little to the left of it). This is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and stretches from Wynberg hill

in the north, to the Silvermine mountains (the Tokai area) in the south. The ten wine cellars on the route boast a winemaking history dating back to 1685. Around the peninsula, not a part on the Constantia Valley, but still close enough, there are a few more award winning wine estate to be explored. This is the food and wine heartland of the country, where splendid wines are grown and our top chefs create international cuisine. Here breath-taking scenery, warm hospitality, world class cuisine and the finest wines all combine to create lasting memories. Spectacular vineyards cover these mountain slopes settled more than 300 years ago by the Huguenots, who brought with them their age-old French wine and food culture. This is a valley rich in history centred around a picturesque village of friendly, welcoming people. For more info: Tel: 021 876 3603, www.franschhoek.org.za

Paarl offers historical charm, culture, architectural heritage, wine and fruit farms, breath-taking scenery and many cycling and nature trails. The magnificent countryside, good wines and friendly people welcome you to a town where a feeling of tranquillity still transcends modern day living. The Paarl Wine Route offers visitors a diverse wine and country living experience. The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the first and the largest in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes more than 200 wine and grape producers within the boundaries of the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin classification. The Wine Route is divided into five sub-routes for a convenient exploration but you are welcome to be creative and target the wineries by any classification or taste. Daily wine tasting, cellar tours and sales are offered at most cellars and many of these have restaurant and picnic facilities. Some cellars offer tasting by appointment only. For more info: Tel: 021 883 3584, www.wineroute.co.za

Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons.
