BOT RIVER SPRING WEEKEND 2-4 SEPTEMBER BOT RIVER The close-knit winemaking community of the small town of Bot River will entice visitors with a host of unique events ranging from a Pink Gin & Bubble Polo affair and a Sausage Making Class to a Magnum Magnificence dinner and guided fynbos hikes – This ‘homegrown’ weekend is for enthusiasts (young and old) to share and savour the beauty and bounty of Bot River’s ‘farm cupboard’. Bot River features 11 wine farms – most of them family-owned and run – and during the Spring Weekend each of them will share something unique to their ‘farm cupboard’. Albeit olive oils, fresh produce, deli offerings, honest wines, farm fare, indigenous greenery or local talent. The Spring Weekend will be open from 10am until 4pm on both 3 & 4 Sep. Tickets are available at www.quicket.co.za and a weekend pass costs R100 per adult which includes a wine glass; an informative booklet to be collected at the tourism office opposite the local hotel, and two days of bountiful discoveries. R100 per person per day, will take you round to the farms of your choice. THE TASTE OF DARLING 2-4 SEPTEMBER DARLING

The Festival presents more than one hundred events including panel discussions, workshops, masterclasses, readings, performances and more, designed to inspire, stimulate and entertain audiences. Open Book 2016 includes Poetica (a dedicated programme of poetry and spoken word events), Comics Fest and KidZone. Most events on the programme are R45. Day Passes (which provide access to six events per day) are R150 and Festival Passes (5 Day Passes) are R600. There are also a number of free events but tickets must still be booked for these events to secure a place. Bookings are through Webtickets. NATIONAL PARKS WEEK 12 - 16 SEPTEMBER AROUND THE COUNTRY The week grants free access to most of the 21 national parks for day visitors, especially people from the local communities. It should be noted that free access to parks does not in include free access to accommodation facilities and other tourist activities. hello spring! ‘Tis the time of blooming and flowering which naturally it makes Spring the most glamourous season in the Cape. To the tiny budding of leaves on the lush trees to faint scent of rose from the geraniums that lights up the north face of Table Mountain. Take in the endless beds of daisies up the West-Coast and inlands, the majestic hydrophytes in our wetlands and the freshest shades of green with the blossom of the vines all over the winelands. Spring is truly the season of celebration of nature and her gifts. South Africa has the third-highest level of biodiversity in the world, thanks in no small part to the Cape floral kingdom. The Cape floristic region is one of the six floral kingdoms in the world. This biodiversity hotspot has the highest concentration of plant species in the world. It contains an estimated 9 500 species of which 70% do not grow anywhere else in the world! Here are some of the highlights that indicate that spring has truly begun to sprung: NATIONAL PARKS AND NATURE RESERVES Namaqua National Park, known as one of the Cape most unforgettable landscapes, is located about 2.5 hours north of Cape Town. With its winter rainfall, it conserves the world’s richest succulent flora. During early August and September, seemingly overnight, the dusty valleys of Namaqualand are transformed into a wildflower wonderland. Come daylight, the fresh breath of Spring, it semms by magic that a tapestry of vivid colours unfold invitingly along the winding roads of the Namaqua National Park. Butterflies, birds and long-tongued flies dance around among the flowers, savouring the abundance and diversity. Take in the breathtaking sights of the valleys filled with Namaqualand daisies and other spring flowers that shout with sheer beauty. Next to some eye-catching succulents, you may also find the world’s smallest tortoise, the Namaqua Speckled Padloper foraging quietly in the shade of petals. Namaqualand is home to the richest bulb flora of any arid region in the world and more than a 1 000 of its estimated 3 500 plant species are found endemically. Namaqua national park has a Caracal 4x4 Eco Route and biking & walking trails to truly enjoy the fauna & flora – why not bring those binoculars and enjoy some birding? SPRING AT KIRSTENBOSCH Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden lives up to its reputation as the most beautiful garden in Africa and one of the great botanic gardens of the world – It also lies just 15 minutes away from Cape Town CBD! Kirstenbosch Gardens has an incredible display of a wide variety of the unique plant life of the Cape Flora (known as fynbos) many of which are in flower in Spring - and this is an excellent time to see the pincushions which enliven the Protea Garden with bright oranges, yellows, peach and red, some keeping going into early summer. You will also see many conebushes, proteas and a wide variety of other fynbos shrubs blooming proudly. Plants from all the diverse regions and biomes of southern Africa are grown at Kirstenbosch, including a near-complete collection of cycads. The Botanical Society Conservatory is a custom-built glasshouse to grow and display plants from the arid regions that cannot survive outdoors. There are over 7 000 species in cultivation, including many rare and threatened species. Namaqualand daisies in all colours of the rainbow, dance in the breeze and follow the sun with open faces. You will see Ursinia (yellow, orange), Dimorphotheca (white, orange), Felicia (blue), Arctotis (orange, cream, red, bronze), Senecio (purple, white) and Gazania (yellow, orange). Look closer to see many other annuals like the bokbaaivygies and the blue flax in amongst the daisies. Many of the wonderful bulbs flower in the spring. You are sure to see the cool elegant arum and tall spikes of Watsonias in the garden. To see the amazing variety and the beautiful shapes and colours of the Cape bulbs, including Moraea, Babiana, Sparaxis and Lachenalia, visit the Kay Bergh Bulb House in the Botanical Society Conservatory, where they are on display, safe from the ever hungry porcupines. More than just a garden, Kirstenbosch is part of a nature reserve. The 36-hectare garden is part of a 528-hectare estate that contains protected mountainside supporting natural forest and fynbos along with a variety of animals and birds. For more, see: www.sanbi.org

Hikaru Kobayashi and David Moore, top dancers with the British Royal Ballet and the Stuttgart Ballet respectively, will do two performances, while the other eight performances are shared by our own flourishing partnership, Laura Bosenberg and Thomas Thorne, and two other couples, all new to the roles of Aurora and the Prince. Angela Hansford dances with Daniel Szybkowski and Cleo Ames will be partnered by Conrad Nusser. As good triumphs over evil, the Lilac Fairy is danced by Kim Vieira, Rosamund Ford and Claire Spector. The role of the evil Carabosse will be shared by Johnny Bovang and Mervyn Williams. A wonderful fairytale story for all ages with beautiful sets and costumes and a sensational Tchaikovsky score played by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra at selected performances, conducted by Brandon Phillips – what more could you ask for? This delightful production by the Cape Town City Ballet is not to be missed!

From fresh, edgy works to crowd-pleasers, the programme is jammed with theatre, music, physical performances, comedy and family fare in a 17-day theatre binge that will be calling Capetonians from their couches. The programme has been reimagined to accommodate more night time performances in keeping with the city rhythms but extends into the day on weekends and school holidays. Awarded productions include Police Cops from the UK’s Pretend Men. From New York comes the steamy prog-rock Odysseus Finn, featuring Michael McQuilken, who also performs and directs Machine Makes Man. Amongst this year’s Standard Bank Ovation Award Winners being staged at the Cape Town Fringe is Rob van Vuuren’s darkly brilliant Dangled, clown-satirist Klara van Wyk in You Suck and Other Inescapable Truths, Alan Parker’s sublime physical theatre piece Sacre for One, Hungry Minds Production’s edgy Out of Bounds, Lexi Meier’s Fabric of the Universe, an immersive, tactile installation involving 250 kg of crocheted yarn, and Falling off the Horn from Grahamstown’s Uyabona Ke, a piece dealing with xenophobia that debuted at the 2016 National Arts Festival. The Baxter’s Zabalaza Festival is bringing four shows to the Cape Town Fringe, the musical production The Addis Ababa Assembly as well as Sonwabo Mphandle’s theate piece, Alunamda, Luntu Masiza’s Ubudoda and Ralph May & Co’s Gelapte Pop. Women continue to carry the activist torch with Niqabi Ninja, a take on male harassment and the female response during the Cairo uprising. Songs for Khwezi was created prior to the #RememberKhwezi protest but continues to expose this important narrative and Mamela Nyamza will debut her new work De-Apart-Hate at the Cape Town Fringe. Sugar Daddy Theatre will revive Eve Ensler’s classic V-Day in a onceoff fundraiser for charity starring Marlisa Doubell, and from Nigeria comes WAIT, a play about issues of access to university experienced by African women. Afrikaans audiences can expect some interesting work including that of ground-breaking new artist Jason Jacobs who will present Stofrooi which looks at the challenges of matric learners, and Terence Makapan’s tale of unlikely friendships, Kinders van die Wind. Comedy also features with Rob van Vuuren’s Very Big Comedy

Show and Macbob Production’s Comedy Masterclass. Perpetual crowd-pleaser Butlers and Broadway returns and Glitter Girls bring their own shiny brand of musical theatre to the stage. Magic and illusion on the line-up includes Marcel Oudejans, Brendan Peel, Greg Gelb and Stuart Lightbody. On the music programme, two must-see collabs between powerful female vocalists are Maya Spector and Asanda Mqiki in Vocal Explosion. Mqiki also teams up with astonishing Eastern Cape artists Nombasa and Msaki in Diva Night. The artists also perform in solo shows. Emma van Heyn adds to this chorus of female voices, whilst muchloved bands the Nomadic Orchestra and Hatchetman will take to the stage. Coming from Gauteng are Acoustiq Assassins and Blaqseed. This year’s Cape Town Fringe family fare include a new production from The Jungle Theatre Company and Puppetrix’s CityGull / StadMeeu. For older children Hearts of War’s Words of War, SA classic Woza Albert! and Ubuntu Arts Theatre’s Silent Cries will ignite and inspire. From 22 September - 8 October. BUTTERFLY WORLD IN STELLENBOSCH Butterfly World, one of the more unique attractions of the Western Cape Winelands, consists of a tropical garden in a 1500 m2 green house. Xandre Kriel’s affinity for geometry shapes the way he works.
Xandre Kriel has fast become one of collectible design gallery Southern Guild’s most promising young designers both locally and abroad. Having joined the gallery at Design Miami/ Basel and Design Miami as well as showing new pieces in the Cape Town gallery’s previous exhibition, Graphica, the furniture designer and maker is also presenting pieces in Southern Guild’s new collaborative gallery space just opened in Rosebank, Johannesburg. He tells us of the inspiration behind his work. Xandre grew up in the Boland, where he spent time with his grandfather in his workshop. Inspired by his ingenuity, where a rusted pipe forgotten on the roadside would become a ramp or a jack, he fast became curious of the everyday geometry of things and objects; constantly observing how lines make up form, playing with proportions and mathematical equations.

These formative years are now the foundations upon which this Cape Town designer has built his aesthetic on. Preferring to use industrial materials and everyday processes, it all started with ply-laminated Formica, reminiscent of the pragmatism of his grandmother’s kitchen. He now bends steel and juxtaposes it with a patina finish, brass or marble. One of Xandre’s most sought-after pieces is the Samosa Table, which he explains set the precedent for his most recent designs. It solved the challenge of designing a form with one continuous sheet of metal with multiple bends, which in turn began a way of thinking about form following function, a true challenge in the design-thinking world. His latest piece, the Vos Altar, is an ode to his maternal grandfather. ‘Vos’ is his mother’s family name and the piece is an ‘altar’ to his memory. When his grandfather was a child, a child, he would carve his name into the piece of slate at the river in the baking Karoo sun. This three-meter monolithic table with the slate top is an altar to his memory and has become an iconic piece in the Southern Guild gallery. This piece took him to Design Miami Basel, a career highlight for the designer to have exhibited alongside modernist great and design hero, Rietveld.

The program is open to all creatives who have a dream they want to materialise: whether it’s launching a clothing line, opening your own restaurant or becoming a professional photographer or filmmaker. The Cointreau Creative Crew Grant Scheme Grand Finale will take place in April next year (2017), where the South African Grand Jury will choose ten finalists, before crowning a winner at the event.

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals!
Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world.
The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks.
Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate.
The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area.
The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land
Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose!

Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and unique lot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. Those people who have intermittent DUVR are more likely to develop basal cell Cancer or skin malignant melanoma than those people who have a continuous lifetime exposure as they are more likely to develop squamous cell Carcinoma. Melanoma numbers are growing more rapidly than any other cancer in the UK, USA and Australia and are doubling every one or two decades. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) concept The sun protection factor [SPF]is a figure calculated by the amount of Ultra Violet Radiation [UVR] required to cause sunburn on the protected skin with sunscreen applied relative to the amount of UVR required to cause sunburn on the unprotected skin (without sun screen). SPF is not related to time of sun exposure but to amount and intensity which varies from time of day and latitude in the world where sun exposure is occurring.

Kristin Weixelbaumer, Creative Director of Black Betty and Black Gold has just returned to wintery Cape Town from San Diego, bright eyed and sun-drenched. Her blonde, long-limbed surfer-girl vibe made even more entrancing by the flecks of gold and gem colours that flicker from her bejewelled fingers and gazelle–like neck. Aside from catching some West Coast waves and getting a golden Californian tan, the reason for her trip was that the fashion film she produced and directed for her inaugural collection for Black Gold, called Raven, was nominated in four awards categories at the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival, held in July in the Californian city.

The film, entitled, A Story About Her, was an exercise in roping in the right people, with the right attitude, most of who were friends and acquaintances of Kristin’s. ‘It started with the lead actress, model Zigi Strydom, she inspired the whole project as I was looking to do something different for marketing the Black Gold brand with the launch of its first range, Raven. I met Zigi and her husband Warren and they epitomised the look and feel of Raven - the whole thing came together from there,’ says Kristin. The film started getting a lot of attention at this year’s Mercedes Benz Bokeh South Africa International Film Festival where Zigi was nominated for Best Actress. ‘I decided to do a fashion film together with a photographic shoot because film allows for the “feeling” of a brand to be communicated to viewers in a more meaningful way than just images. It hits home on a more personal level, and has the ability to take the viewer on a journey,’ she says. With a background in design and art direction, Kristin launched Black Betty in 2012 soon after her wanderlust for travel, mysticism and gemstones converged in Northern India where she discovered the centuries old traditions of gem craftsmanship. Since then, she’s launched numerous collections each with their distinct identity yet all based on the same principle that wearing a piece of the earth is a priveledge that should be celebrated. ‘I believe jewellery shouldn’t be mere decoration. When a mutual respect exists between the designed piece and it’s owner, one honors the origin of the material, and its inherent providence.’ As with former collections, Raven, is a premium range of bespoke pieces. Black and white diamonds set in either silver or gold have been designed with a mythical narrative comprising totemic symbols such as the snake, the skull, the feather, and the arrow. The southern tip of the African continent is the meeting place of two mighty and bountiful oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. The Two Oceans Aquarium is ideally positioned to showcase the incredible diversity of marine life found in these two oceans. The Aquarium holds over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins can be seen in this spectacular underwater nature reserve. The two ocean aquarium has established itself as a key player in raising environmental awareness through its high-quality exhibits, conservation and education programmes. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman

After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Constantia Valley is the wine route at the heart of the Mother City (or at least a little to the left of it). This is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and stretches from Wynberg hill
in the north, to the Silvermine mountains (the Tokai area) in the south. The ten wine cellars on the route boast a winemaking history dating back to 1685. Around the peninsula, not a part on the Constantia Valley, but still close enough, there are a few more award winning wine estate to be explored. The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the first and the largest in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes more than 200 wine and grape producers within the boundaries of the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin classification. The Wine Route is divided into five sub-routes for a convenient exploration but you are welcome to be creative and target the wineries by any classification or taste. Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. Garden Walks at Kirstenbosch There are walks at 10h00 and 14h00 from Monday to Saturday and an additional walk on Tuesday at 11h00. There are no walks on Sunday and Public holidays. Each walk lasts approximately 2 hours. The Botanical Society’s volunteer Garden guides, who are brimming with amazing knowledge and insights into the Garden, lead free guided walks around the Garden. They are guaranteed to fascinate you and enhance your appreciation of Kirstenbosch NBG. Walks are approximately 2 hours in duration, and are all slightly different as they are tailored to meet the need and interests of each group and highlight seasonal interest in the Garden. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. All walks start at the Information Desk in the Visitors Centre (Gate 1). A number of bird walks, led by experienced birders, are also scheduled to take place during the year. Please see our events page for more information on the next bird walk.
