The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family. How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go. habonina Qubeka, our very own multi-award winning actress, dancer, choreographer, singer, motivational speaker and businesswoman is truly a force to be reckoned with. What qualities should girls be looking for in their role models in the media? I love this question! I didn’t see this coming *giggles* You know what Tracey; I believe in it should be consistency. Consistency in their values and beliefs. Ladies look up to their role models mostly their whole lives as they grow and mature, so consistency is important. What should every woman know how to do? Besides twerking? *laughs* We as women are quite powerful. I deal with a lot of women on a day-to-day basis and what I have found is that due to history and society, women have become scared to be sensual. To love themselves. Women are trapped in this cycle of comparing themselves to other women, society’s standards and so forth. So I believe women need to learn to self-love. To appreciate themselves more, see their worth and how powerful they are. Tell us more about the various community project you run and where it stemmed from? I get it from my mom actually. From a young age I grew up watching my mom work with her community projects and seeing how much she loved it, and I was inspired by that. So my community projects revolves around my passion which is my outreach programme EDUdance wherein I go into the township schools and motivate youngsters through dance and creative movement. With part of my dance training, I get to train little ones, women and the disabled. Everyone can dance, whether you are in crutches or a wheelchair. Dance is a global language; I fell in love with it and find it is such a healer. I also have my most recent children’s project “Book club with Khabonina” where I try to motivate the youngsters of Giyani primary school to read. Moving into Kabonina as an actress - tell us about ‘Dora’s Peace’? What is going to surprise the audience about this movie? Wow. You know, it is such an honest movie. I believe South Africa will appreciate the direction it takes and that the story is something that lies within all of us. The location being Hillbrow is also so familiar and it talks to everyone. The film is for all South Africans, not discriminated by gender race or creed. Especially with all this racism and the many issues circling about, I feel this movie is like a time out – like no man’s land during time of war. The movie gives us a moment of introspection. This is what the little boy gives to Dora and therein she finds peace, and I believe there is a ‘Dora’ in all of us.

Starring: Khabonina Qubeka, Hlubi Mboya, Ronnie Nyakale, Danny Keogh, Paballo Koza, Meren Reddy, Denel Honeyball. Directed By Konstandino Kalarytis Written By Kosta Kalarytis. Screenplay By Andrew Herold Produced By Kosta Kalarytis, Dumi Gumbi, Gabriella Kalarytis. Email: oneman@iafrica.com l onemanb.co.za

What was the biggest challenge taking on this role? I realised reading the script, this is not acting, this is becoming. The beautiful thing about working with so many different women from various walks of life was the many stories I could draw from them – their past and present that helped me to delve into Dora. The truth about sex workers is that she is not just a woman on the corner, it could be someone who lives next door to you or someone who lives in Sandon. It doesn’t discriminate. What I had to do was to remove all judgement that I had. It was therapeutic. The film it doesn’t focus on prostitution lifestyle per se, it is Dora as a human being. This is what I feel we all forget? We look at material things, the ‘what’ and not the ‘who’. So it was about walking in her shoes and it was over time that Dora developed and formed fully. I changed in that I understand myself and others better and am more willing to learn and understand. It is also exceptionally difficult to find light and shade in the moment! What are you doing 5 minute before scene takes? Wow, when it came to Dora, I was already in the moment. However, when it comes to my other shows, you will usually find me doing cartwheels or dancing, eating props or hanging upside down. I’m that girl. I’m a beast on set *laughs* I’m the one that needs to be chained down. Who is your muse? Robert de Niro and Al Pacino. Just from watching them age in the industry, they are phenomenal. However, if anyone had to play me, I’d want Angela Basset. I just find her incredible. Thoughts of the acting/show biz in South Africa? You know what? Eish… I think we are in a situation where people are cast due to their fame in their twitter or Instagram following or popularity – I understand that as it gives the movie mileage – but I just feel that I know so many talented actors who don’t see the importance or have time to focus of the social media aspects, they get side-lined. This is one the aspect I find sad and frustrating in our acting industry. The ones that are famous, I wish they’d put more effort, take classes, perfect it. That’s what makes followers lose credibility in it. I think we need to find a way to give social credit to all actors to balance the plate. We need to open up the industry. - TLR Hello Cape Town October 2016 l

A NEW WAVE DELIGHTS Southern Guild’s cutting edge show highlights collectible design from South Africa’s new generation. Here are five Cape Town designers to watch.

In April, Southern Guild put out a call for young designers under the age of 40 across South Africa to submit their pieces for a show which would be titled A New Wave. With a rather steady stable of designers already part of the Southern Guild collection, this call for submissions was met with a lot of excitement which ultimately translated into one of the most successful shows at the Southern Guild gallery in Cape Town. A New Wave offers a wide array of categories pushing the boundaries of collectible design, from jewellery to furniture pieces, lighting, ceramics and wall-pieces. We look at some of Cape Town’s most exciting designers at A New Wave. Furniture is one of the most popular collectible design categories and in A New Wave we love the Inkunzi Arm Chair by Ebrahim Assur. The chair embodies the personal style of the designer who won the Southern Guild Design Foundation Apprenticeship Award in 2013. The Inkunzi Arm Chair is a modern take on the traditional riempie style which he mastered at his apprenticeship with Pierre Cronje. Since then, Ebrahim, who specialises in woodwork has gone on to found his own business, EBCS Design based out of Hout Bay. Young designer, Ashlee Ainsley Lloyd attracted the attention of Southern Guild director, Trevyn McGowan when she noticed just how bold the designer of Molecular is. Ashlee, currently completing her BTech in Industrial Design at Cape Peninsular University for Technology (CPUT), created Molecular by hand with over a kilometre of crocheted black shipping rope and crocheted fabrics which are suspended from a copper frame spanning three metres

wide and almost two metres across. This draping, textural piece is just the beginning for the young designer who is passionate about synthesising our relationship with nature into a design experience. Chuma Maweni’s ceramics are explorative, yet reference an ancient wonder for the material he works with, such as the gunmetal grey, pit-fired teardrop vessels, which when opened, reveal their emerald glaze along, releasing the ancient smell of the pit-fired ceramic vessels. Chuma’s work has been perfected after years of working alongside Anthony Shapiro of Art in the Forest and for the Light from Africa Foundation. The designer of wall pieces Beautiful Coward and Remember Me, Kurt Pio, is always coming up with something new and Cape Town always laps it up. Kurt created the two hearts for Southern Guild with plywood and over 10 000 brass tacks for Beautiful Coward and a little less nails for Remember Me. Cape Town’s sweetheart’s heart series was conceptualised after a particularly difficult break up, which inspired him to create the delicately beautiful wall pieces which catch the light of day. When Madri van Zyl’s necklace Fold to Flow caught the eye of Southern Guild’s founders and directors, we knew we had to pay attention. The Cape Town based designer has only recently graduated from the Stellenbosch University jewellery department and has since gone on to launch her own company, Iloni. This is the first time Southern Guild is exhibiting jewellery and the gallery is very eager to see what is to come from this exciting category in this city brimming with exceptional design talent.

Bloemendal Restaurant is positioned on top of one of the highest hills in the Northern Suburbs. A panoramic view of 270° of the Cape Peninsula, beauty of the surrounds, delicious cuisine and wonderful staff will be sure to whisk you off your feet. Bloemendal Restaurant was built 19 years ago by the present owners two cousins Freddie Turner and Johan van Wyk. They had a vision to bring traditional Cape cuisine back to Cape Town. In the last 15 years Bloemendal Restaurant has grown to be one of the biggest function and banqueting restaurants in the country. It is not only known locally, but internationally as well for the spectacular destination for weddings, private functions, conferences and medieval theme parties. Freddie explains, “I dreamt about it, and when I woke up, I couldn’t forget it about it. So 2-to-3 months later we were looking for my dream destination and we found it here on this farm. We asked the farmer what he thought about having a restaurant on top of the hill and he agreed. Once we reached the peak and saw this view, all the doors opened. We build Bloemendal from the ground up, enriching it with our own unique style. With a restaurant, it is not what you do, it is how you do it. I believe that is what makes us different. We offer

Cape cuisine buffet style food – we may still be a developing country, but we offer 1st world standards.” The dining room seats up to 250 Guests. We are open as a normal Restaurant on a daily basis for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. We also cater for Weddings, Conferences and various Private Parties and there for it is essential to make bookings at all times. With Table Mountain as a backdrop - you can wine and dine to your heart’s content. “The doors are always open and everyone is invited. My recommendation would be the seafood potjie or the chicken pie” laughs Freddie. On the estate sits 3 vintage cannons – one of which is fully functioning and took more than 3 years to restore. Experience the loud thunder of a real vintage cannon, as we fire them one after the other. To truly engage with their guests, Bloemendal Restaurant has a ‘cannon lottery’ every 3rd Sunday of the month in which each guest who attends the luncheon has chance to enter. The winner will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to fire off their 9pdr cannon at 01h00. With the emphasis on service, true hospitality and comfort combined with breath-taking views and lush scenery, it is the ultimate breakaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

With all these opportunities around you, why not indulge in the many options? Take a truly ‘African safari’ or wet your feet shark diving? Alternatively, simply relax and tan on the soft sands of the famous Clifton beaches. With the skyward mountains, sun-kissed beaches of Camps bay, lush-green forests of Tokai & Newlands, Cape Town has something to anyone.

they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. Not to forget, you can also spot these pups at Robben Island (Dutch for ‘seal island’) You are guaranteed to encounter pod of Cape Furs cavorting about. African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals!

Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world.

The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks.

Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate.

The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area.

The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land

Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose!

l Hello Cape Town October 2016

You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! Great White Shark Cage Diving in Gaansbaai Looking for a heart-pumping adrenaline-spiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras! Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and unique lot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.

5 safaris

Who comes to South Africa and doesn’t go on a safari?

A literal bucket-list experience, we have two breath-taking game reserves we recommend that will not only give you the opportunity to see the exclusive Big-5, other wildlife and flora, but an experience you will take home with you and cherish forever:

Accommodation include premier, family or luxury chalets.

AQUILA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE Published in the “World’s 21 favourite things to do in Cape Town” Aquila Private Game Reserve is recognised as a major Cape Town tourist attraction. Aquila offers you a unique opportunity to experience the Big-5: lions, rhino, buffalo, elephants and leopard up close. Additional wildlife and flora is available to view on our once-in-a-lifetime game drives. The Reserve offers a wide variety of safaris and other activities on offer like 4 x 4 trails, fishing and themed weekend breakaways.

Big 5 Game Reserve less than two hours’ drive from the city.

There is a great emphasis placed on a wildlife conservation educational experience and doing so offers visitors a complimentary educational introduction to their cheetahs. Cheetahs are captive bred and strictly controlled in the interest of cheetah survival worldwide. Aside from the Big 5, Aquila is home to hippo, giraffe, buck and over 170 different species of bird!

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife.

Iziba Safari Lodge offers complete relaxation in stylish accommodation.

The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn.

south african design Written by Genevieve Putter, Photographs supplied When walking through Cape Town’s inner city be sure to listen out for a mechanical clacking sound echoing between the historic buildings. Follow it and you’ll be pleasantly surprised to discover it comes from an antique loom housed in a beautifully appointed heritage building belonging to one of SA’s most sought after textile design companies, Mungo. The building is a multi-faceted space, which aside from being home the loom in its micro-mill, has a shop with everything from tea towels to children’s blankets, a second floor office and exhibition space. Here, Tessa Holding, daughter of founder Stuart Holding and the company’s marketing manager, tells us more about keeping it in the family, the brand’s new home in Cape Town and why doing things the old school way is still cool.

78 Hout Street, Cape Town Visit Mungo.co.za Can you tell us more about the fact that it’s a family business, and who exactly does what? Mungo was started by my dad, Stuart Holding, in 1998. My brother Dax and I have since come on board as well as my husband. I head up the marketing side of the business and manage the newly opened Cape Town store and my husband Craig (who has now become my landlord) owns and manages the 1900s heritage building that it occupies. My brother Dax has taken on the role of Mungo Managing Director and is based in Plettenberg Bay with his wife Kristyn. She has also become involved in Mungo and is now running the wholesale department. Our dad, Stuart, remains committed to textile design and development and spends most mornings at the Mungo Mill experimenting with new ideas, weaves and colourways. The best thing about being a part of a family business is the trust and shared common goal. How did you come to find the new venue? For a number of years we had had the vision to create a combined shop and mill. We always knew that the hardest part would be to find the perfect space. It took years of searching before we came across the premises - the most exquisite four-storey heritage building that was built in the 1900s. It’s complete with gables, sash windows, spacious and airy rooms, high ceilings and original Oregon pine floors. When we walked in we knew this was the one as the bones of the building were so beautiful that we could immediately see the potential. It took about three months of refurbishments, carefully making sure to keep the original architectural character. We opened our doors to the public in June this year. Take us through the design process; from concept, to final product. Mungo possesses the rare ability to produce a fabric from the initial idea to the finished product. This allows us to be organic in our design process. Some of our designs are based on historic pattern books, adapted to give a creative or modern edge. Others have an African influence, from traditional textiles collected on travels. We still lay out the design on traditional graph paper, which is translated and punched by hand onto the pattern cards. Once one of our fabrics has been designed and created we take it home and live with it; to be tested and used so we become familiar with its individual characteristics. It’s from here onwards that our fabrics and products are refined, resulting in exemplary handle and quality. Hello Cape Town October 2016 l

what to see Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015, www.tablemountain.net

There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. Operating Hours: Sept-Mar (Summer) Mon-Sun: 08:00-19:00, Apr-Aug (Winter) Mon-Sun: 08:00-18:00, Conservatory Mon-Sun: 09:00 -17:00. The southern tip of the African continent is the meeting place of two mighty and bountiful oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. The Two Oceans Aquarium is ideally positioned to showcase the incredible diversity of marine life found in these two oceans. The Aquarium holds over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins can be seen in this spectacular underwater nature reserve. The two ocean aquarium has established itself as a key player in raising environmental awareness through its high-quality exhibits, conservation and education programmes. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman

funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.

After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the first and the largest in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes more than 200 wine and grape producers within the boundaries of the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin classification. The Wine Route is divided into five sub-routes for a convenient exploration but you are welcome to be creative and target the wineries by any classification or taste. Daily wine tasting, cellar tours and sales are offered at most cellars and many of these have restaurant and picnic facilities. Some cellars offer tasting by appointment only. Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. A strikingly beautiful and historically significant home in Kenilworth Upper

R24.9 million

This 700m 2 Sir Herbert Baker manor house, circa 1893, is situated within a secure enclave in sought-after Kenilworth Upper. Originally part of a larger estate, which was ultimately subdivided, the five-bedroomed, fivebathroomed abode occupies a 1748 m 2 erf. The historically important property was once home to Sir De Villiers Graaff, and it was here, in front of a roaring fire in the drawing room, that Jan Smuts, a regular guest, penned some of his memoirs. While the kitchen and bathrooms have been modernised and boast topof-the-range fixtures and finishes, the gracious bygone era character of the home prevails, thanks to a myriad of original features. Among these are: high ceilings, teak floors, elegantly profiled skirting boards, dado rails and cornices, as well as original fireplaces. Apart from the luxurious volume of the ceilings, they boast attractive mouldings and several are beautifully stenciled. Arched lead-paned windows are shuttered and the house offers several bay windows, which make perfect little secluded retreats. The home offers endless possibilities, and the entertainer will be spoilt for choice; The piece de resistance is the original grand ballroom with its polished teak floors, majestic ceiling, high, arched, lead-paned windows and a raised stage – the perfect spot for a stylish quartet! The spacious reception rooms are exquisitely appointed and include a formal dining room and lounge, plus an inviting family room, situated off the modern and well- proportioned gourmet kitchen. Doors lead to a large covered terrace, flanked by stack-back windows. From here, glorious views of the manicured garden and surrounds can be enjoyed. Upstairs, four generously proportioned en-suite bedrooms boast sash windows and shutters as does the quirky tower-room – perfect for overnighting guests. Four garages, domestic accommodation and a pool complete the complement. This very private home is conveniently located in the heart of the Southern suburbs, close to many leading schools. A quintessentially elegant family home or an ideal property for an enviable corporate flagship headquarters. For sale by Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate. hello doctor Facts about sunscreens that travellers should know Ultraviolet radiation consists of 3 wavebands: - UVC 100 - 280nm which is blocked by the Ozone layer - UVB 280 - 320nm and - UVA 320 - 400NM

According to a Survey that was conducted in the UK on 1500 female travellers, it was revealed that 22% would not use sunscreen and provided the following reasons: They are of opinion that they do not burn; Sunscreen is too expensive; The sunscreen does not work. Based on the above it is important that the emphasis should be placed on the importance of daily Solar Ultraviolet Radiation [DUVR].

Louis Washkansky

O n D e c e m b e r 3 , 1 9 6 7 t h e w o r l d ’s f i r s t h u m a n h e a r t transplant was performed at the renowned Groote S c h u u r H o s p i t a l i n C a p e To w n . T h e o p e r a t i o n w a s considered a success and a medical milestone. The man who performed this feat of pioneering surgery and led the world into an era of sophisticated medical advances was Christiaan Barnard, the surgeon who dared. To d a y T h e H e a r t o f C a p e To w n M u s e u m h o n o u r s the skill and wisdom of the heart transplant team, the courage of the recipient, the generosity of the d o n o r ’s f a t h e r a n d t h e m e m o r y o f t h e y o u n g d o n o r herself.

Those people who have intermittent DUVR are more likely to develop basal cell Cancer or skin malignant melanoma than those people who have a continuous lifetime exposure as they are more likely to develop squamous cell Carcinoma. Melanoma numbers are growing more rapidly than any other cancer in the UK, USA and Australia and are doubling every one or two decades. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) concept The sun protection factor [SPF]is a figure calculated by the amount of Ultra Violet Radiation [UVR] required to cause sunburn on the protected skin with sunscreen applied relative to the amount of UVR required to cause sunburn on the unprotected skin (without sun screen). SPF is not related to time of sun exposure but to amount and intensity which varies from time of day and latitude in the world where sun exposure is occurring.

Experience the drama of that night in fully restored operating theatres where the surgery took place. A fully guided 2 hour tour describes the electrifying events with the help of life-sized silicone models and replicas of important scenes.

Logically a higher SPF provides more sunburn protection and for a greater period of time. It also protects against UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate deeper and are associated with aging and skin cancers. UVA protection should be at least 1/3 of the SPF and is measured by a star rating system. The ideal product would have SPF 30 plus a 4-5 star rating. Most people only apply half of what is needed. Application guide:

Guided tours begin at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 (17:00 tours by appointment only)

Use slightly more than a teaspoon on each of the Chest and Tummy, the Back as well as the Left and Right leg!
