Traveling with young children resonate in the need to combine your cravings with the necessity to provide some form of interest and freedom to the short people. A picnic in a wine estate is an ideal solution and a local favorite which is met with a lot of patience and appreciation by both the venue and fellow visitors. A few week back, we had the pleasure to picnic at the oldest wine estate in South Africa, Groot Constantia Wine Estate, just 20 minutes out of Cape Town and on the City Sightseeing Mini Peninsula route. A shaded picnic lawn, surrounded by a visitor center, a museum, a duck pond and the vineyards. Children are welcome to explore and interact, run around and ask questions while you indulge in a generous serving in the picnic basket. If you are interested and the children are a little bit older, you can download a free voice map that will tell you more about each building, the history of the estate and the winelands and the different products that the winery creates, beginning with the Grand Constance wine that was Napoleon Bonaparte favorite and is manufactured to this day. The picnic basket needs to be pre-booked from Jonkershuis Restaurant with at least a 24 hour notice. The content is made of locally sourced Charcuterie and cheese, small portions chosen off the restaurant’s menu and dessert, more than one kind! The only thing you need to put your mind to, is picking out the wine that will accompany all the goodness. Groot Constantia is a perfect spot, showcasing Cape legacy, perseverance over centuries and warm hospitality, all on the highest level. The estate is open for visitors 7 days a week.

a pool for your party A new SANParks Stokvels & Travel Clubs is taking the admin out of collecting and coordinating your next group travel in one of their amazing destinations. Whether you’re planning your next staycation or road tripping a bit further afield with family or friends, explore South Africa like never before with the latest travel initiative recently introduced by South African National Parks (SANParks). Stokvel: A traditionally South African savings pool where a group of individuals contribute an agreed-upon monthly sum. The group can make monthly pay-outs, or they could keep investing their savings and get a lump sum at the end of the year. The funds in the stokvel offer each member in the group an equal and fair benefit. Keeping with the stokvel theme, South African National Parks has launched an exciting new product for Stokvels & Travel Clubs. This service offers special payment terms and discounted rates at selected National Parks on particular dates throughout the year and across the country. Managing Executive: Tourism Development and Marketing, Hapiloe Sello, said, “Stokvel & Travel Club membership boasts many different types of personalities and profiles, ranging from the ordinary grandmother to the high earning CEO’s of companies and large corporate and public sector institutions. There are over 800 000 registered Stokvels and even more formal and informal travel clubs/ groups in South Africa. Travel clubs that qualify include groups of people who have special interests such as hiking or biking but also just groups of friends and large families that enjoy group travel.” To qualify for the favourable payment terms, Stokvels and travel clubs have to register through the travel trade team in the Reservations department. Once registered with SANParks, the group will receive a client code that can be used whenever a booking is made. The client code will automatically qualify the group for favourable payment terms and special discounts. Sello says, “unlike the traditional group travel that allows a group of individuals travelling together, our new Stokvel & Travel Club product allows a group of ten or more people to contribute money towards a combined visit to our parks on a future date of their choice.”

SANParks is offering a 20% discount at the following destinations: Matyholweni Rest Camp in Addo Elephant National Park

Agulhas Main Camp in Agulhas National Park

national arts festival A hybrid festival of the arts, anchored in Makhanda, home of the National Arts Festival (NAF), accessible online and coming to you in cities across South Africa. The National Arts Festival has announced that it will present a multi-layered arts experience for its 2021 edition. The National Arts Festival Experience will revive its live eleven day National Arts Festival in its home city of Makhanda in the Eastern Cape from 8-18 July (Makhanda Live) and stage a National Arts Festival Online which will be entirely online in July. And, for the first time ever, the National Arts Festival will present a series of shows, in partnership with Standard Bank, in cities across the country. The collection, called Standard Bank Presents, will give audiences across the country a taste of what the Festival has to offer from 17 June to 4 July 2021. Says National Arts Festival CEO, Monica Newton, “The National Arts Festival has adapted its Festival experience to bring the arts to audiences where they are and at a time when we still need to be very careful about where we go and what we do to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. ” The gathering of artists is an important catalyst to reignite the industry and the Festival remains committed to presenting the best and safest possible space for artists and audiences to come together, experience and appreciate the arts. “We are curating a tighter, more intimate Festival in Makhanda and we do have to work very carefully around the Covid protocols, but we think it will be an opportunity to feel the pulse of a Covid-impacted arts world and to hear artists speak from live stages. We invite audiences to come and share this important moment with us.” The NAF successfully transitioned into an online festival in 2020, drawing a global audience of over 83 000 visitors and breaking new ground for the South African arts sector. “Online experiences are here to stay and we are excited about further integrating this element into our offering,” says Newton. The National Arts Festival’s decision to present work in other cities was founded on the realization that some audiences may not be willing or able to travel far and that many artists would struggle to afford the costs of travel to Makhanda as a result of the impact of the pandemic. “Our new showcase, Standard Bank Presents will give people a taste of the National Arts Festival and a window into what our artists are thinking and doing. As we adapt to our ever-shifting Covid reality, we need to try new things and imagine new ways for the arts to speak to audiences,” says Newton. Newton said the Festival was realistic about the capacity of audiences and artists to travel to the Festival in Makhanda but pointed out that the Festival’s Eastern Cape visitors accounted for 55 % of their pre-Covid attendance figures in 2019*. This points to the likelihood of the live event in Makhanda largely attracting day-trippers and weekenders, and of course the Super Fans; the ardent group of festival-goers who have already signalled their intention to support the live performances, no matter where they are. The 2021 National Arts Festival Experience’s Makhanda Live will showcase the works of the 2020 Standard Bank Young Artists and will also be the stage on which the 2021 Standard Bank Young Artists will be announced. The Standard Bank Jazz Festival will take place live and online, reaching a jazz-loving audience locally, on the Continent and across the world. Newton acknowledged that long-standing partnerships were key to the Festival’s adaptability, “We are very lucky to have the support of the Eastern Cape Government and Standard Bank, Sarah Baartman Municipality, Distell and Business and Arts South Africa who are willing to evolve with us to ensure that the Festival continues to be a showcase of the arts, no matter the circumstances.” Important Dates • The programme for the Festival will be announced on 7 June 2021. • The Standard Bank Presents showcase takes place in various cities from 17 June-4 July. • The National Arts Fesival’s Makhanda Live will take place in Makhanda from 8-18 July 2021. • The Online National Arts Festival takes place during the month of August on the Festival website https://nationalartsfestival.co.za

Visiting a game reserve in the winter might seem extreme but there are a few good reasons to do so just because. The cold Karoo night puts a grand show of bright and clear sky that is perfect to be enjoyed around the Boma, a traditional South African camp fire, with a warming drink between your palms.

The nice and cosy days encourage the Big 5 animals to roam around, giving you a better look, more chances to engage and better photo opportunities. Tranquila, The Aquila spa consists of 10 treatment rooms and an indoor, lavish, heated pool which is open for free to visitors that stay for more than two nights. A happy place to spend the hours between the safari trips.

Nestled at the foot of the Tygerberg Hills in Cape Town, De Grendel is located only 20 minutes from Cape Town CBD and Cape Town International Airport. The slopes of the Tygerberg, which face the setting sun, offer cooling breezes off the cold Antarctic Benguela current from the Atlantic Ocean only 7 kilometres away. Winemaking at De Grendel is a careful balance between science and art. The meticulous care of the vineyards allows the grapes to express the environment in which they are grown and their distinctive varietal character. Careful harvesting and gentle handling in the cellar, combined with the wine maker’s passionate practice of their craft, carry the wines throughout the journey from fruit to wine.

wine along the coast

Cederberg Mountains

In recent years the Cape West Coast became known for its collection of activities and interesting destinations like the endless flowers carpets in the spring, game reserves, foodie spots that drew their inspiration for their menu from the ocean and the surrounding vegetation and charming, small towns with friendly residents that operate small hotels and B&B’s right of the shore. Knowing Capetonians are adding a visit to a few wine estates and wineries in the area to try and enjoy the somewhat different tastes and aromas of the wines produced in this region, to their West Coast trip. Different to other wine regions of the Western Cape, the West Coast is a little warmer in climate, the vineyard slopes are gentler, and soils are different. That has led to a pallet of new undertones to your known wine verities. Whether it’s a self-drive road trip with friends or family, or an organised West Coast wine tour, a northbound trip on the R27, with Cape Town at your back, will bring you to the gateway of the West Coast Wine Route, at the small town of Darling, from where you can head east to Malmesbury on the N7. Further east is Riebeek Kasteel, where stunning wine and olive tastings are available. Head back to the N7 through the Berg River biodiversity into the Swartland for an organic wine tasting. Continue over the Piekenierskloof Pass and into the Cederberg to experience South Africa’s highest altitude vineyards with superb wine tastings. Namaqua West Coast Namaqualand is a biodiverse region, showcasing a vast array of endemic species. From June to October, Namaqualand is resplendent with a carpet of beautifully coloured wildflowers, guaranteed to wow visitors from near and far. With its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and cool afternoon breezes, the region produces some excellent and award-winning wines. The Olifants River region is home to three of the biggest wine cellars in the country. The terroir of the Olifants River can be described as diverse in a climatic sense. The biggest climate driver in the area is the Atlantic Ocean and proximity to the sea determines the climatic conditions. The red and yellow/brown sandy loam soils are well suited for a range of cultivars for quality wine production. Sip and savour the region’s offerings at Namaqua Wines, Klawer Cellar and Lutzville Vineyard. Visit www.westcoastwineroutes. co.za for detailed information on the estates mentioned above. Cederberg Mountains Tucked away in the Cedarberg Mountains, you’ll find the Cederberg Private Cellar. This historical wine estate, found at the foot of the Sneeuberg Mountain, not only holds more than five generations worth of winemaking history, but also boasts the title of having its vineyards at the highest altitude in South Africa.

Dragonridge Winery is situated deep in the Paardeberg near Malmesbury. The farm produces between 20 and 40 tonnes of organic grapes each year which are used to produce small quantities of handcrafted natural organic wines. For an organic vegan wine tasting, make sure you include this on your list. To find out more visit www.fynbosestate.co.za . Swartland The Swartland, an established wheat growing region, is known as the breadbasket of the Western Cape. Plan ahead to accommodate a visit to the wine farms in the area. For an organic vegan wine tasting experience in the Swartland, pop in at Org de Rac next to the N7 at Piketberg. Org de Rac is open Monday to Friday 09:00 – 17:00, Saturdays and public holidays 09:30 – 14:00. For more information, visit www.orgderac.co.za . The Darling wine making region includes five estates - Groote Post, Cloof Wine Estate, Darling Cellars, Ormonde and Contreberg. Each estate’s wine range is representative of the vineyards that are forged by molten rock and granite soil and the unique climatic conditions that are contributed to by the mist from the Atlantic Ocean. curing the winter blues with red The winter school holidays are on its way and with it comes the need to plan an array of activities to redirect energy and avert the boredom brought on by wet weather. Thankfully, with Cape Town’s mild winters we still have a significant number of sunny days that give rise to opportunities to explore the outdoors during our rainy season. City Sightseeing welcomes both local and international visitors on board their renowned red, open top ‘Hop-on Hop-Off” buses throughout the year, taking the task out of organising trips and things to do around the city while the kids enjoy their winter break, come rain or shine. With its wide range of tours to choose from, you’ll certainly be able to find one that best suits the needs of your brood. City slickers will find the Walking Tour to be an absolute treat. Explore the rich history of Cape Town on foot, with stops in the iconic and colourful Bo Kaap area, various museums, St George’s Cathedral and the oldest building in South Africa, the Castle of Good Hope. It’s also a great way to get in your 10 000 steps while you’re at it. The Mini Peninsula Tour circles the back of Table Mountain, letting you take in the scenery of the mountain’s southern slopes, which include the beautiful gardens of Kirstenbosch, past the exquisite Constantia winelands and out of town towards charming Hout Bay, before heading back through the Atlantic Seaboard and into the city centre. The tour lasts roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes with a selection of stops en route to keep the little ones entertained. Hop off and pop in at World of Birds, Acrobranch or Kirstenbosch or visit the Two Oceans Aquarium at the beginning or start of your trip. For those looking for a full day tour a bit further afield, the Cape Point & Peninsula Tour is for you. This guided day tour to Cape Point in a luxury air-conditioned double deck coach explores the spectacular Cape Point nature reserve, with a stop at the famous Boulders Beach, home to a colony of African penguins. After visiting the penguins, your next stop is Cape Point, where you can enjoy a bite to eat before exploring further. Cape Point Nature Reserve offers some of the most breathtaking mountain and ocean scenery in the world, so have your camera handy. There is an optional 40 minute hike from Cape Point to the Cape of Good Hope. At Cape Point, you can also follow the footsteps of early Portuguese explorers Vasco Da Gama and Bartolomeu Dias and enjoy several short walking trails leading to the gorgeous beaches and viewpoints. After a day of exploring, soak up the scenery along the coastal drive back to Cape Town via Scarborough and Kommetjie, with spectacular views from the Ou Kaapse Weg mountain pass. For something more leisurely, you may want to consider a wine route tour. Sit back, relax and enjoy the chauffeured drive to the Constantia Valley’s picturesque vineyards, breath taking scenery, world class cuisine, fine wines and more than 300 years of history. Experience the magic and beauty of the valley, where kids can enjoy nature while running and roaming to their heart’s content, or if you prefer, take a stroll through the beautiful greenbelts and enjoy a sensational taste experience at one of the many restaurants in the area. This tour will allow you to make stops at the following 3 Wine Estates: Groot Constantia: This historic estate dates back over 300 years. • Guided or self-guided cellar tour (10H00 - 16H00) - Hourly * TASTING (3 wines of your choice) Eagles Nest: Taste the full range of Eagles’ Nest Wines at the Tasting Room. Those who were lucky to visit South Africa in the last few years, would have come across the work of Dezireë Smith in the best souvenir shops under the Whimsical Collection brand. Her vivid and humorous paintings of African wildlife animals on different home and personal accessories are an eye couture. Her new brand, Dezireë Fine Arts, are a large series of women portraits in bright colours that will bring happiness and the African sun into any room. Pursuing her art career from an early age, Dezireë Smith attended extra art classes in the evenings after school. Persistency paid off when she, along with six other youngsters, won a national art competition. The winners were awarded an extensive tour through the Eastern Cape, where they attended various art workshops. It was in this beautiful part of South Africa where the inspiration to capture the African soul on canvas was born. Inspired by the mystery and luminous beauty of the African woman, her first genre was created. With semi-realism and vivid colours, her style is distinctive. Dark skin, tribal costumes and ominous eyes all beat down on canvas capturing the rhythm of Africa. Deziree’s “African Women” seduce the walls of famous luxury hotels in Hermanus, Franschhoek, The Silo Hotel and the Kruger National Park in South Africa and Various International Destinations. the wine studio

A new launch for ONE&ONLY CAPE TOWN With almost 700 references, One&Only Cape Town features one of the most balanced and diverse wine collections on the continent. It seems only fitting therefore that the resort has launched the Wine Studio, a sleek and sophisticated space showcasing a sampling of the resort’s impressive offering and is where guests of the resort can discover sensational wine journeys such as the Sip & Savour and Wine Blending experiences. The space is also open daily to all between 16:00-19:00 for walk-ins and the chance to interact with Luvo Ntezo, Resort Head Sommelier, over a glass of wine, as well as to visitors who have booked a special Cap Classique Afternoon Tea experience. Governor Jan van Riebeek’s diary entry on 2 February 1659 reads: “Today, praise be to God, wine was pressed for the first time from Cape grapes, and the new must was tested fresh from the vat.” These famous words, now gilded on the doors to the One&Only Cape Town Wine Studio, point to a pivotal moment in the country’s history, the day the story of wine in the Cape region began. Now, centuries on, the Western Cape is considered one of best areas in the world for wine production, with countless accolades having been awarded to its resident farms. Guests visiting the resort on 2nd February, on this momentous anniversary, are sure to encounter a celebration in The Wine Studio worthy of its significance. The Wine Studio is also available as a private dining room, providing the perfect canvas for hosting a variety of celebrations from cocktail parties to formal dinners. The One&Only Cape Town team of highly trained and experienced chefs will curate the perfect menu to suit the occasion, according to guests’ preferences, and with the option of expert wine pairing by Luvo. Equally suited to more intimate gatherings, The Wine Studio is the perfect venue to treat friends or business partners to a privately hosted wine, gin or whisky tasting, followed by dinner in one of the resort’s contemporary dining restaurants. To celebrate the launch of The Wine Studio, One&Only Cape Town has also introduced several exciting new events and experiences dedicated to the discovery, enjoyment, and celebration of fine South African wines. The Wine Studio Dinner Collection - Wine Wit and Studio Smarts Join Head Sommelier Luvo in The Wine Studio for an evening of “Wine Wit and Studio Smarts”. Discover a reverse wine pairing, whereby guests are presented with a selection of wines for each course and are encouraged to decide on their ideal match. All Studio dinners include a delicious four-course set-menu prepared by the Resort chefs. Diners can expect an evening of exceptional food, wine, fun and discovery; an opportunity to engage in an immersive wine conversation with charismatic Luvo, and occasionally some special guests from surrounding farms. Confirmed dates in 2021 include 29th July and 30th September.

Chef & the Vine A series of sophisticated yet relaxed evenings featuring some of the top local wine farms in the region and showcasing nostalgic local flavours from One&Only Cape Town’s signature restaurant, Ochre. Ochre serves contemporary South African cuisine, and is headed by Resort Executive Chef, Chris Mare. The Chef & the Vine calendar is made up of an esteemed line-up of premium wine estates, all with decades, sometimes centuries, of experience in winemaking, vast knowledge of the South African wine landscape and a plethora of interesting wine tales worth sharing, who will visit the hotel for an evening to share their tales and knowledge with guests over the course of a convivial evening. There are three confirmed Chef & the Vine events in 2021, each of which will highlight a renowned local farm. The first being Paul Cluver on the 25th of June, a fourth-generation family business who have been farming in the Elgin Valley for more than 120 years. Next, on the 27th of August, the Resort will welcome Thelema. Thelema will be visiting from the famous Stellenbosch wine region and are one of the most sought-after wine estates in the country. The third and final event will feature wines from the acclaimed Hamilton Russel wine farm on 29th October. Hamilton Russel hail from a third popular wine producing region, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and are widely considered the nation’s specialists of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A South African Wine Blending Experience For any wine lover, the opportunity to blend their own wine is one not to be missed. This exceptional experience takes place inside One&Only Cape Town’s elegant Wine Studio. After an insightful discussion with Luvo about the wine landscape in South Africa and some of the popular varietals, guests can begin to create their very own signature blend, tweaking and perfecting the recipe according to their palate. The resulting creation can be savoured over a delicious meal at one of the resort’s exceptional restaurants or packaged and taken home for the perfect gift or memento of their stay. Guests also have the option of visiting a wine farm, where, together with the resort’s sommelier and local winemaker, they will be expertly guided to producing their ideal blend. Cap Classique Tea Guest can settle in at Vista Bar & Lounge and soak in the floor to ceiling views of Table Mountain as they indulge in a bubbling celebration fit for all occasions. The Cap Classique Tea features a stunning display of delectable, sweet pastries and delicious savoury bites, and is presented on unique One&Only tea stands alongside a free flow of One&Only Cape Town’s very own Cap Classique brut. DIEU DONNÉ VINEYARDS

“Dieu Donné” translates literally into “A gift from God”. The farm is situated high on the cool south-west facing slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, which tempers the sun, ensuring that our grapes ripen slowly. Thanks to our cool summer conditions & unique soils, this lends to the unique flavours and characters of the terroir in the grapes. Merlot being the flagship wine on the farm, we invite you to visit our tasting facility or enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace while soaking in the beautiful views.
