South Africa in Antarctica The SA Agulhas II is South Africa’s latest Antarctic research and supply flagship vessel. For South Africa, this represents a major investment and signals the Department of Environmental Affairs’ commitment and intent in contributing to the understanding of the Earth as a functioning, integrated unit. SA Agulhas II provides logistical support to research bases in Antarctica, Marion and Gough Islands. The studies done in are critical to enhancing the understanding of the entire Earth system. Research including: physics, chemistry, oceanography, engineering, biology and weather are crucial to understanding the southern Oceans, Antarctica and the Earth system. This all begins with contributing to the wellbeing, livelihoods and security of South Africans and our neighbours in the region. The Antarctic continent does not belong to any state or government. South Africa and 48 other member nations belong to the Antarctic Treaty. However, South Africa is one of the 12 countries that are the original signatories signed in 1959. Countries that sign this treaty undertake to ensure that the Antarctic region will only be used for peaceful and scientific purposes and to protect and preserve the environment. As an original signatory, much of the South African researchers’ work in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Islands region is aimed at protecting the fragile environment. The mission of the Department of Environmental Affairs is to increase our understanding of the natural environment and life in the area through appropriate research, science and technology. South Africa’s involvement in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean Islands dates back to the earliest voyages of discovery, due to the then Cape of Good Hope’s position as a stop-over for explorers, whalers and sealers. Antarctica is about 4 000km away from South Africa. It takes 10-15 days to travel there by ship, the time depending on how much ice there is along the way. It can only be reached between November/December and April/May. The SA Agulhas II transports people and cargo to its three bases. The most recent South African base, SANAE-IV, is located 170 km inland, built on a rocky outcrop peeping out of the white snow. The SA Agulhas II is dedicated to the memory of Miriam Makeba - in recognition of her role in the struggle towards democracy and dedicated her life to the upliftment and development of the oppressed especially with regards to education. 6

R120 - R300 The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET brings a timeless classic to the ARTSCAPE Opera House in a production which showcases the art of classical ballet at its best and epitomises the seamless integration of the beauty and grace of ballet with the athleticism required of today’s dancer. This version of Swan Lake is based on that of Vladimir Bourmeister and was first taught to the CAPAB Ballet Company by Frenchman, Attilio Labis, in 1971. Labis had danced as a guest in Russia in several different productions and it was from these that he chose the elements to make it one of the most eclectic in the world. This is the nineteenth time that this production has been mounted for this company, known for the past twenty years as the CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET, having been the UCT Ballet Co from 1934 to

1963 and the CAPAB Ballet Co from 1963 to 1997. It showcases the depth of balletic talent in a truly South African company! At three performances, our Senior Principal ballerina, Laura Bosenberg, will be joined by Mariette Opperman, recently returned to the CTCB from Europe. Laura will appear as the White Swan, Odette, with Mariette as the Black Swan, Odile. They will be partnered, as Prince Siegfried, by South Africa’s top male dancer, Thomas Thorne. The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET welcomes back Kirstel Jensen in the role of Odile opposite Claire Spector as Odette, with Daniel Szybkowski as the Prince. The last pairing is Hannah Ward as Odette with Leanè Theunissen as Odile, partnered by Conrad Nusser. Visit www.capetowncityballet.org.za for more details.

The EARTHWALKER A new ballet, EARTHWALKER, created by Kirsten Isenberg and Robin van Wyk, will be seen in the ARTSCAPE Opera House from 9th to 11th June, 2017. The stage is shared for this production by the ZAMA Dance School and the CAPE JUNIOR BALLET, while the fourth ballet is that of Kirvan Fortuin, whose ballet, Silver and Gold (You & I), written on dancers of the CTCB, was been seen in Cape Town in 2016. The Earthwalker, also known as Taurus, is a young star who wonders the Earth, going from tribe to tribe and bewitching the young maidens with his devil may care attitude and charismatic charms. He falls head-over-heels in love with Virgo, daughter of the water king, Scorpio, and his beautiful queen, Pisces. Virgo is also promised to Leo, Prince of the Sagittarians…the fire stars. A fight ensues between Taurus and Leo – a fight to the death! The role of Taurus is shared by Thomas Thorne and Revil Yon, and that of Virgo by Laura Bosenberg and Cleo Ames. Daniel Szybkowski shares the role of Leo with Martin Milner, while Aquarius is danced by Ivan Boonzaaier or Marc Goldberg. The set for EARTHWALKER is created by Charles Petersen and the music is an eclectic mix of composers. The performances are on: Fri 9th June @ 19h30 Sat 10th June @ 14h00 and 19h30 Sun 11th June @ 15h00.

CRYSTAL WITH A MARRIOTT TOUCH Bringing its superior service and worldclass amenities to the South African travel market, Marriott International revealed the conversion of Cape Town’s popular African Pride Crystal Towers Hotel & Spa into a Marriott branded hotel to now be known as the Cape Town Marriott Hotel Crystal Towers. We were invited to the glamourous launch of the reinvigorated hotel, creatively themed: ‘Around the World’. The entire space was transformed into an international and intercontinental blend of themed lavish dining and networking areas, that clearly epitomise the extravagant lifestyle that guests experience when enjoying their staying at a Marriott branded establishment. The delight is in the detail. Regular Marriott Hotel guests will for the first time in South Africa be able to enjoy the Marriott brand facilities they know so well from around the world: the familiar taste of the Marriott burger; the Greatroom where one can work, play, discuss, and enjoy a top-quality snack or drink; and try out the latest in technology available to guests. Chief among the technology tools are the Marriott App that Marriott Rewards

members can use for mobile check-in – with keyless check-in to follow soon – and the Meetings Imagined digital tool for conference organisers. The rollout of the conversion means new décor – a look and style that reflects Marriott Hotel’s appreciation of its guest identity: achievers with an appreciation of a work-life balance. The hotel interiors tap into the need for places to work that offer easy connectivity, while at the same time providing a variety of spaces for relaxation and enjoyment. The hotel lobby, the Greatroom, has been redecorated, as have the Orah Bar & Lounge and the Acara Pool Bar & Terrace. The spaces are ideal for networking, working and having fun. Implementing the new brand also means that the well-known Towers Restaurant will soon have a new menu, to be designed by recently-appointed Executive Chef, Henrico Grobbelaar, a leading chef with a dynamic career in the local food industry and a following among food-lovers. The restaurant’s fresh approach will tie in with the Marriott standards while still offering the flavours its loyal guests have come to know.

Sketchy Bongo

@SketchyBongo

Now a household name, Yuvir Pillay, or better known as Sketchy Bongo, is our very own is a South African record producer from Durban. Sketchy had started producing music from the tender age of 13 and rolls out epic hip-hop, house and pop music. Forming an incredible group called ‘Wolf Pack’, this assemblage consists of talented producers, artists, graphic designers, rappers and kwaito artists. 16 singles, 1 killer album and the opening act for Justin Bieber later, Hello Cape Town grabs some breakfast with Sketchy for a quick catch up.

@sketchybongo

Sketchy Bongo

YOU ARE THE OPENING ACT FOR JUSTIN BIEBER! OF COURSE, WE MUST ASK, ARE YOU A ‘BELIEBER’? *laughs* I love Justin Bieber’s music and his new album ‘Purpose’ is really cool, but I wouldn’t call myself a ‘belieber’. You will see true Beliebers at the concert. They are the girls who will be fainting and crying as he steps out on stage. I’m not that that person. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING THE OPENING ACT?

I’m sketchy Bongo. I’m a music producer & DJ musician. I create art.

I’m really excited, it’s going to be a great opportunity. I’m going to be performing in front of 60 000 people in JHB, it’s going to be 65 or 70 000 in Cape Town. It’s the biggest crowed I’ve ever performed in front of! I’m mostly working with the Wolf Pack, Kyle Deutsh, Aewon Wolf, Shekhinah, etc. The whole concept just blows my mind!

WHERE DID THE SKI-MASK COME FROM?

WHAT IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER?

It was a prop at a music video shoot. I took a liking to it and decided to keep it as my trademark. When I started out at Sketchy Bongo, I didn’t like people knowing who I was, but after time passed, it became infamous! It was a simply performance mechanism. I’d jump on stage and people would go crazy.

That’s difficult question. I think, something most memorable was getting my 1st song played on the radio – mind you that wasn’t very long ago. When I heard, I had an instant mix of shock and excitement, “So many people are listening to my music!” *chuckles* It makes you feel good.

AND THE NAME?

WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION FOR YOUR SONGS?

Sketchy Bongo was actually marketing tool. I was searching for names that weren’t taken while trying to put words together that were creative. Being an artist as well as making music, I wanted to mix the two. So, the musical aspect is ‘Bongo’ and visual art aspect is ‘Sketchy’ – it also went well with the ski-mask, it makes me looks ‘sketchy’ *chuckles*

It comes from everywhere. This hotel we are currently sitting in is inspiring, the people of the country is inspiring, music that came before me and current artists inspire me. My music is very diverse, soulful music, music that is timeless. For example, ‘Back to The beach’, I’m pretty sure 20 years from now people will still be listing to it as one of the greats.

WHY UNMASK YOURSELF? WHY REVEAL SKETCH BONGO?

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?

WHO ARE YOU IN 3 SENTENCES?

The unmasking was the result of more and more people recognising my face without the mask. In the beginning, I was religious about wearing the mask, but it became way too much effort to maintain. My main playgrounds are the night clubs, where the audience gets really excited and the heat that is created is insane. I’d perform, and as soon as I’m done I’d take it off because it is way too hot! Secondly, my album is called unmasked, so it fits the unveiling.

l Hello Cape Town June 2017

I’m touring all over SA and Africa. The people are awesome and so diverse. I will also be playing a few shows in Europe, NYC etc. By beside that, I’m working on new projects, finishing off Kyle’s & Shekhinah’s new album. Aewon Wolf & I have also started a new label call: ‘Wolf Pack X’ in which we are developing 2 epic new artists. My aim is to push the label and finish shooting my music videos my album. Unmasked is available for purchase in stores and online. I am also nominated for a couple SAMA awards which I am excited and grateful.

COOL-RUNNINGS It’s the summer version of the thrilling winter sport. The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family. How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think.

Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.

After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. l Hello Cape Town June 2017

south african design by Genevieve Putter, Photography by Francis Marais

Born and bred in Cape Town, with Polish ancestry, Agata Karolina has the rare talent of being both a highly creative individual and a remarkably astute, business-minded entrepreneur. Having attained a Masters in Contextual Design at the renowned Design Academy Eindhoven, Agata moved between Europe, Asia and Africa working as a curator and project initiator before settling in Cape Town. Her career took her down a ‘garden’ path of memory, heritage, scent and perfumery, something that wasn’t planned but somehow seemed to be her destiny. Here she tells us about her bespoke range of perfumes developed and created here in Cape Town.

What is it about perfumery that attracted you? Perfumery found me far in advance of me finding it. I was brought into the world of distilling, tinctures and natural oils through my mother and grandmother, who taught me everything I know. As a child I was always hypersensitive to spaces, smells and sounds and how they worked together. I enjoyed scent throughout my life as a personal pleasure but for a very long time never considered it a career. As a designer I was always focused on story telling through object and installation and working in scent became a hobby, and with more time evolved into a medium for expression and hence my work as a creative. I’ve become greatly passionate about how perfumery works with the senses, how it encapsulates people in the space of memories, sets the first act for attraction and experience of another and the fact that it is connected to the olfactory centre. What inspired your inaugural range Confessions Volume 1? The concept of the Confessions Collection came from the question “What will the founding collection of my brand represent?” It was about setting the foundation for everything that was to follow. I wanted to create a collection, which I felt expressed something real and honest rather than creating stories that had no context to the wearer. To do this, I decided to tell my own confession as the perfumer behind the brand, choosing six people in my life that over the years had influenced the person I had become, together creating the whole. I believe we are all a multitude of personas at any given time, we are complex layered creatures, calling on the ones we need as the time and situation requires. What excites you about perfumery and more so about it being a very niche industry in Cape Town? We have an incredible amount of raw materials that are indigenous to this area, which very few people have experienced beyond hiking in the mountains and veld. Working with new and precious materials like this is like discovering a new world, it allows me to play on the land and to reflect the space in which I am most inspired, bringing new and unexpected scents to people, allowing them to take home their very own piece of Cape Town in a intimate and personal way. Duiker Island: Cape Fur Seals Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras! Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open,

especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE

#MarineBig5

Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.

You might be lucky to see the Marine Big 5 around the famous Dyer Island eco-system: Sharks, Dolphins, Whales, Seals and Penguins. A free visit to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary is included.
