Hello Cape Town July 2019

Fall in love with Simon and Garfunkel all over again in this dynamic and uplifting

musical journey through more than 20 classic hits including – BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER, CECILIA, THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE, SCARBOROUGH FAIR and MRS ROBINSON. Theatre on The Bay, 3 - 28 July, Tickets from www.pietertoerien.co.za FAMILY SECRETS A Comedy by Enrico Luttmann. Enrico Luttmann has become a mainstay of the Teatro Vittoria and Teatro de’Servi in Rome with his bittersweet comedies of present day Italian life. In addition, his work has been presented all over Europe and enthusiastically received, and the first productions of his plays in English are scheduled for both the U.K and the United States. Feisty, combative Grazia lives in an Italian sea-side town, passing her days with her obsessive dedication to never-ending soap operas. Her son, Adamo, has moved to Rome where he writes soap operas for television and plays for the stage. His recollections of their spikey motherson relationship plays out in his mind until he achieves an understanding of what “family” truly means as he dodges the skeletons in the cupboard. Sometimes hilariously witty, sometimes deeply moving, “Family Secrets” is as tasty and comforting as a big bowl of pasta, as the protagonists learn to speak the universal language of Family. Theatre on The Bay, 3 - 28 July, Tickets from www.computicket.mobi THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James`s Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists

maintain a fictitious person to escape burdensome social obligations. a lust for luxury

Starting with a winning location on one of the major junctions in the Cape Winelands, where the R45 meets the KlampmutsSimondium Road, en route to Franschhoek, continuing with award winning wines and an acclaimed chef restaurant, adding the uninterrupted panoramic vistas over the Simonsberg-Paarl mountains, Vrede en Lust wine estate designers over the years made sure every visitor will benefit from its advantages.

Day visitors can get to the estate by vehicle or by hopping off the Purple & Orange lines of the Franschhoek Wine Tram. Although comprising a large tasting facility, clever design and setting serves an overall private feel with a series of lounges and seating arrangements that can host different group sizes, all spilling into a large veranda that is leveled with the top of the estate vines - a green, dark red or brown leafy sea, depending on the season you visit. The tasting room serves White, Red, RosĂŠ and Prosecco from both their Paarl & Elgin vineyards, accompanied with platters or paired with Lindt chocolate. Weather permitting, and when the accommodation area is not booked for an exclusive function, the hosting staff might allow you to indulge in the beautiful formal garden set on the other side of a small, secluded bridge.

10

l Hello Cape Town July 2019

Crossing the bridge also brings one to the accommodation, weddings and conferencing side of the estate. The historical Manor House was beautifully restored after it caught fire in 1955. It is a modern fitted 4 bedrooms that can be either rented as a whole or accommodate a bridal party when a wedding takes place on the estate. The lush dining room will host an indulgent breakfast supplied by Lust Bistro & Bakery, the estate’s resident restaurant.

On one side of the Manor House there are three 2 bedroom cottages, named after the children of the first estate owner, furnished to serve welcoming country luxury, including a small kitchenette. Further down the grounds the large pool house includes a sitting area, a bar and modern conference rooms. It also leads to the luxury vineyard rooms - a u-shaped complex, surrounding a pretty, small garden and looking out to the vineyards and the surrounding mountains. They all boost what is referred to as Modern Vineyard style.

Going back to the other side of the Manor House, the old tasting room and the fully covered large balcony attached to it is the venue to host the party of your dreams. It can hold up to 100 guests and it is wrapped by manicured lawns and totally private and fully catered in house. When choosing to celebrate or stay at Vrede en Lust you are also provided with access to mountain bicycle renting to meander around, horseback and carriage riding in collaboration with wine valley adventures and even using the estate platform as a starting point to your Wine Tram adventure. All by pre-arrangement. Although dinner is not offered to overnight guests, a group of conference attendees or a wedding party will be treated to a Braai dinner (South African barbeque) at the pool house.

Lust Bistro & Bakery is headed by Patron Chef Jean Pierre Smith and carries the love for the use of local ingredients. It is continuously attended by locals that enjoy the fresh, seasonal menus. It is open from early hours and serves breakfast and lunch every day. The Bakery offers artisanal breads and treats, cakes, homemade jams, preserves and oils. Vrede en Lust hospitality ethos and the extensive range of offers and possibilities to indulge makes it a repeating distention among frequent visitors to the Cape Winelands. If you haven’t been yet, you should make a plan.

reliving history

The 120-year old Lord Nelson Restaurant at the iconic Belmond Mount Nelson hosted figures such as Noel Coward, Rudyard Kipling, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Marlene Dietrich among many other honorable guests. In closer times the dining hall is the room where in 1994, then-President Nelson Mandela welcomed international leaders for the first World Economic Forum to be held on African soil. You can feel this sense of history when you dine in the restaurant and it’s fascinating to imagine the conversations which would have taken place within these walls. The elegant, wood-panelled room is adorned with glittering chandeliers, remarkable pressed ceilings depicting the history of the British Empire’s South African colonies and a minstrels’ gallery. It still has the wooden deckchairs once used by First Class passengers of the Union-Castle shipping lines. Adding a leafy allure to the décor are three stunning botanical tapestries of indigenous flowers created by artists of the Keiskamma Trust, from the rural village of Hamburg in the Eastern Cape. Culinary aligns with the introduction of bold classic dishes and the mid-17th century French art of ‘guéridon’ or tableside service.

Hello Cape Town July 2019

a taste of india A scenic drive along the M4, past Cape Town’s iconic St James Beach, lies the Dido Valley. On the cusp of Glen Cairn and Simonstown, the newly developed Harbour Bay Mall houses The Raj Indian Restaurant, the newest addition to the well-known South African chain that has grown significantly over the past two decades. The restaurant boasts a magnificent uninterrupted ocean view by day and a beautiful silhouette of the Simonstown coastline by night. Inspired by traditional North Indian cuisine, the menu offers a selection of well-known meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes, all masterfully prepared by born and bred Indian chefs. Firm favourites are showcased on the menu, including a variety of Rogan josh, Vindaloo, Butter chicken, Korma & Tandoori dishes. While homage is paid to Indian traditions throughout, a touch of South African influence shines through with venison being an added menu category for those with more adventurous tastes. Sides include traditional flat breads, naan and roti, a variety of plain or pilau rice and raita (a tasty yoghurt-based condiment). Dishes can be tailored to suit everyone’s “heat” preference, from mild to hot, making it a family-friendly establishment that caters to all palates. Extra hot can be arranged upon request for those who really enjoy firing it up. To round off a meal and for those with a sweet tooth, a small range of popular Indian desserts are available. If you’ve ever wanted to try kulfi, handmade Indian ice cream, this is your chance, or perhaps, mildly spiced kheer, a warm and creamy, spiced rice dessert, which is perfect for keeping the winter chills at bay. A fully stocked bar also is also available. In addition to the traditional set menu, The Raj also has a selection of promotional offers for families – The Raj Family meal includes 3 curries, naans, starters and rice, a range of lunch options - The Raj Thali & Tandoori Chicken with chips and a Wednesday Navy Night special, exclusive to the Simonstown branch. Those looking to host catered events can make group reservations, or hire the venue for private functions, with a tailored menu to suit guests’ requirements. The Raj has joined hands with the Simonstown Business Association to help attract more locals and tourists to this wonderful location. Simonstown is most popular for Water sport, Penguins at Boulders, SA Navy Museum, Toy Soldier Museum and The Historical Ghost Walk. What better than to end day your day with a delicious curry at The Raj. Some popular guesthouses to visit are Mariner Guesthouse, Residence William French, Tintswalo at Boulders and A Boat House. You may pick up a Raj voucher at one of these if you’re lucky!

par excellence

Nederburg Wine Estate in the Paarl Wine Valley is known and regarded around the world for their superb production. This is achieved by maintaining a non-compromising ethos that managed to run like a common thread between estate owners and their wine makers over the last two centuries. Ever since the farm was first bought from the Dutch commissioner, Nederburch (hence the name), in 1791, it was set as a commercial winery, producing white wines. Navigating through ups and downs over the years, Nederburg was bought in 1937 by Johann Graue, a viticulturist that chose to depart Germany and the world renowned family business he was part of, Beck beer. With his knowledge came the understanding that Cape Town’s physical conditions and weather are not similar to Europe and is actually opposed. He recognised a critical need to move from cool climate to warm climate vines. Together with his son, Arnold, who studied the art of wine making in Europe too, they pruned all the vines and started winning all the local awards.

That, in its turn, got the Nederburg wines continued international appraisals and accolades, carrying the brand’s name to any wine loving society globally. Two more wine makers down the line - an Italian that introduced Tuscan vines and a Romanian that planted Mediterranean vines - all changes were for the best. Nederburg wines are the most awarded in South Africa. This is achieved not only by the high quality of the grapes, but also by using a blending method known from Brandy productions. Each vintage release contains a mix of wines from different years, layering and deepening the taste, reaching a complexity that is well accepted. Among wine connoisseurs, Nederburg is known for the yearly auction, called the ‘Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction’. It started in 1975 after a visit by a Sotheby’s representative to the estate. The auction included 6 wine estates and 140 potential buyers. Today there are over 60 wineries and over a 1000 international, by appointment buyers, participating in this September event, distributing the fruits of the auction to all corners of the world.

l Hello Cape Town July 2019

On our visit to Nederburg we asked if there is a chance for amateurs to buy and age wines without owning their own maturation facility. It turns out to be that with careful storage in a cool, dark place anyone is welcome to try and enjoy the discovery of a preserved bottle. We were advised to try the Brew Master Bordeaux Blend from the Heritage Heroes series (R200), the II Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon which is available only at the estate’s tasting room (R450) and The Winemasters Cabernet Sauvignon which can be matured to the extent of 5-7 years (R100). In the homey tasting room, you can choose from a range of pairings including one for the kiddies or add a cheese platter to your experience. Cheeses are sourced from Foxenburg farm outside of Wellington. Yet, a visit on a beautiful day calls to enjoy the nurtured outdoors. A range of picnic baskets is available to pre-order including an option for children, but nothing will match dining at The Red Table restaurant, located in the fully restored Manor House and the large sitting verandah that looks over a large lawn and the vines behind. It is a classic, à la carte menu restaurant with formal, crisp white linen tables in the old lounge, classic cast iron tables and chairs are located below the old Oak trees on the verandah and less formal, low outdoor furniture is available next to the jungle gym. The menu, designed and delivered by head chef Lisa Cilliers, is seasonally adapted to compliment the climate. Vegetarian dishes are readily available and special dietary needs are gladly accommodated. A wide selection of Nederburg wines are offered by the glass and the entire range can be enjoyed by the bottle.

Lastly, if you are interested in carrying forward all the good you experienced so far, pop into the Quabeka Bicycle Assembly Facility and help tighten a few screws for a while. Qhubeka (which means “to progress”), is an organisation that mobilises for socio-economic progress, by distributing bicycles to needy South Africans in exchange for work done to improve the environment, community or academic results. Bikes let riders carry more books, more goods for sale, more medicines and other supplies that they can distribute amongst communities. Since its inception in 2005, Qhubeka has distributed bicycles to over 90 000 South Africans. Nederburg is open 7 days a week and only closed on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Good Friday. Large groups and foreign language tours are by prior appointment. Address: Sonstraal Rd, Paarl. Tel: 021 877 5123. Visit nederburg.co.za for more information. Hello Cape Town July 2019 l

the red bush

While facing the reality of limited and an expensive supply of Black Tea arriving on ships from Europe, Dutch farmers came across a beverage drunk by local Khoisan people north of Cape Town. They named it Rooibos, meaning red bush, after the colour the leaves became when dried. They’ve learned that the drink is made using an indigenous plant to the Cederberg Mountains and later learned that it had a unique 100-kilometer radius and was the only place on the planet where rooibos grew. With the spread of demand, both locally and internationally, local farmers, botanists and entrepreneurs looked for ways to grow the red bush commercially and succeeded at the beginning of the 20th century. Rooibos tea is commonly prepared in the same manner as black tea with milk and sugar added to taste. Other methods include a slice of lemon and using honey instead of sugar to sweeten. It is also served as espresso, lattes, cappuccinos or iced tea. Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free (no decaffeination required) and has many health benefits including being low in tannin and a good source of antioxidants. Many physicians (especially in South Africa) recommend Rooibos to soothe infant colic, but no formal studies have been done on this. Rooibos is also used in cooking, gardening, for first aid in methods learned from the KhoiKhoi and in the beauty industry. When visiting South Africa you will find Rooibos offered on menus and in the coffee corner everywhere. The same goes for Bos Iced Tea®. Being the drink of choice for countless South Africans, we were recently introduced to the new, sparkling version of it. It’s got no sugar, no caffeineand no kilojoules. For cooking, beauty and cocktail recipes using rooibos, have a peek at the South African Rooibos Council website.

a new twist

A new 16 Mile Beach Challenge, which sees participants set off for a grueling but beautiful one-day guided hike along South Africa’s longest uninterrupted beach has been launched. This addition to the West Coast Way, the route with the most twists, offers a non parallel experience. It is pre-designed and open for all, combining warm local hospitality, wine tasting treats and a physical challenge unique to the area. A walk along the beach- the extreme version. This endurance hike, (rated at level 4 for fitness) explores the picturesque and unspoiled coastline between Yzerfontein and Tsaars Bank in the famous West Coast National Park, and is the only guided beach walk of its kind offered within the West Coast biodiversity corridor. Participants will arrive in Yzerfontein and be transported to the West Coast National Park where they will enjoy a meal and wine tasting, and then spend the night, before departing on the hike early the following morning. Upon arriving at the finish point in Yzerfontein hikers can choose to head home or stay for another night on the Cape West Coast. Karen Schräder is the driving force behind this exciting hike and has a passion for sharing Yzerfontein and all that it has to offer with visitors to the area. Being known for its pristine beaches, she identified the unique 16 mile uninterrupted beach north of Yzerfontein as one of the natural wonders of the Cape West Coast and South Africa as a whole, and wanted to share this with visitors. “The 16 Mile Beach Challenge incorporates parts of the West Coast National Park, which hosts some of the oldest archeological sites in our country and is internationally known for its extensive bird and plant species. Participants will experience and discover this area in a unique way - through the eyes of Honorary Field Rangers who have been working for many many years in the park on a volunteer basis and know the area like the back of their hand.” “This short but captivating experience, which is only an hour away from Cape Town, is not only a wonderful personal challenge but also a great opportunity for a breakaway – to disconnect from stress, reconnect to the beauty of nature, and with yourself. This is an experience of West Coast living at its best!” says Schräder.

refine nature Joining just a handful of South African pioneers, Leopard’s Leap, a leading wine estate in the Franschhoek Valley, with a long standing successful heritage of wine production and import, chose to stand out with two new, de-alcoholised wines that will align with the global trends seeking for healthier wine consumption. The Natura De-alcoholised new additions to their wine portfolio include Classic White and Classic Red. This couple gives wine lovers a delightful alternative for adding quality to life during those occasions or in those moments where alcohol can or should not be consumed. Versatile, health-conscious and delicious, Natura is ideal for a responsible, everyday quality lifestyle. Being de-alcoholised, the Natura is made from a traditional alcoholic wine from which the alcohol has been extracted to leave no more than 0.5% abv. The Natura Classic White is a blend of Chenin Blanc and Muscat. Crisp and refreshing with tropical fruit flavours on the nose, the palate is juicy and beautifully integrated. Delightful on its own as an aperitif, it is also a lovely partner to delicate soups and all kinds of salads and seafood. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cinsaut, the Natura Classic Red intrigues with ripe red berries and sweet spice on the nose while the palate follows through with a smooth mouthfeel and lingering aftertaste. Delightful on its own and an outstanding and versatile partner on the dinner table. Sourced from cool climates, the grapes for Natura wines are harvested at optimum ripeness to ensure the finest varietal characteristics. Winemaking is gentle with the minimum intervention and only when the winemaker is content with the quality of the wine, the alcohol is removed via a spinning cone. D one under vacuum and at low temperatures, this process ensures the product retains its unique appeal. Continuing towards bottling and labelling, the de-alcoholised wine is treated as an ordinary wine and handled with the utmost care and attention. The Nature range is available in the estate for tasting or to enjoy while enjoying the Rotisserie restaurant, known for the array of meats rotating on the spit and the generous Harvest Table. A perfect and loved outing by locals. Wines are also available online through www.leopardsleap.co.za Leopard’s Leap is part of the Franschhoek Wine Tram pink & grey lines. It will reopen on 11 July after their yearly break. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? Low alcohol A drink classified as low alcohol contains 1.2% alcohol by volume, or less. It is very important that the product’s abv is indicated on the label. Non-alcoholic A non-alcoholic product is not derived from a fermented product from which alcohol has been removed. Non-alcoholic products have never contained any alcohol. Alcohol-free The term alcohol-free applies to drinks where the initial alcohol has been extracted to be no more than 0.05% abv. The abv should be displayed on the label. De-alcoholised De-alcoholised means that alcohol has been extracted from a traditional alcoholic beverage to leave no more than 0.5% abv. The abv should be displayed on the label. Leopard’s Leap Natura White and Natura Red fall in this category.

FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital
