CAPE TOWN’S PREMIER

ELECTRONIC & GAMING EXPO EGE, Cape Town’s premier electronics and gaming expo is back and will be bigger and better than before. With the explosion of the gaming market across the globe, gaming has changed from a niche hobby enjoyed by a few “geeks” to a mainstream phenomenon and a bigger industry than both music and movies worldwide. EGE intends to bring a little bit of something for everyone at the EGE expo being held at the CTICC 29th - 31st July 2016. Not only will there be everything you’d expect from a gaming and electronics expo, namely new games to try and buy, but there will be a host of other activities to suit whatever interest you may have in gaming. From live tech demos to competitions, even a chance to get to play some state of the arty virtual reality games – there’s something for everyone at EGE 2016. Several big gaming retailers and distributors will be on the floor selling all the latest software, hardware and peripherals so expo goers are sure to snag a bargain. There will be an area setup for table top games as well if the more “unplugged” version of gaming is more your thing. Our Artists Alley and Crafts Marketplace will again give a chance for smaller vendors and artists to show off their wares and some gaming and geek culture merchandise. We’re very excited this year about our main stage which throughout the weekend will play host to several demonstrations as well as discussion panels hosting subject matter experts from various areas of the gaming community such as YouTubers, professional gamers, game developers, designers, eSports commentators and various others. You can’t have a gaming expo without cosplay and EGE is celebrating gamers’ love for dressing up as their favourite characters by hosting a cosplay competition throughout the weekend with R5000 up for grabs as well as numerous spot prizes. Another big addition to EGE this year is the EGE LAN. We will be organising a dedicated space at the expo for 400 gamers to play to their hearts content on lightning fast internet from Friday till Sunday – over 50 hours! Ticket space for this is limited to just 400 tickets which are already selling fast, so if you’re interested make sure not to miss out and get your ticket from Computicket. Perhaps the most exciting piece of EGE 2016 is the massively expanded eSports Arena where some of the best gamers across South Africa will be competing across various different games for thousands of Rands in prize money. In fact the winners of one of the competitions for a game called Counterstrike will be jetting off to Paris Games Week to compete in the Electronic Sports World Cup. Spectators will be able to watch all the games live throughout the weekend and the Counterstrike finals will be hosted in a 500 seat auditorium for everyone to see the best in the country do their thing. EGE 2016 is set to be the biggest and best gaming expo Cape Town has ever hosted and with a little something for everyone we just can’t wait for the end of July. Tickets for both EGE expo and EGE LAN are available through computicket for more information check out our website www.egesa.co.za

It is a popular favourite that has delighted successive generations of theatre-goers since it first opened in 1959. Now, she reluctantly responds to The Call of a 19th Century Ancestor // Kabbo (Elton Landrew) to explore the almost forgotten world of her forefathers. It’s a compelling journey that takes us deep into the secrets of a distorted history. The Keeper of the Kumm is a play, nonfiction novel and feature documentary. The play, a dance drama with original music, opens at the National Arts Festival. A feel-good musical. Theatre on the Bay, 20 July - 6 Aug, Tickets R125 - R250 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mob

WE’VE BEEN TO

TAKING BUSINESS SERIOUSLY Wesley Randles has endeavored a joint venture with mentor and partner Chef Luke Dale-Roberts of The Test Kitchen, Luke’s wife Sandalene Dale-Roberts and top chef and manager Simon Widdison to open

THE SHORTMARKET CLUB - upping the stakes from a coffee and after-work-drinks area, to a fine-dining destination in Cape Town! Known for their serious, uncompromising and perfectionist approach to food and the restaurant business will now share their enthusiasm with habitants and visitors in the heart of the CBD. The venue is made for people to sit back and have fun - where lunch turns into drinks at the bar, or an after-work get-together turns into a languid dinner. Guests enter the restaurant from a staircase to the first floor where you are greeted by a spacious open kitchen. The bar area allows a perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink while watching the chefs in action. The restaurant space was created to give an uncompromisingly opulent feel generated by using leather and wood extensively. The striking black and deep aubergine colours form a flawless backdrop to the moody space where two skylights pour in natural light. Accents such as military lamps from WWII and antique stained glass sliding doors made by local craftsmen from Argentina have added to feel of history and craftsmanship the space evokes, while leather-covered tables add to the appeal. The main feature of the room is wall of framed, paper cut out butterflies created exclusively from old, personal documents connected to the history of Test Kitchen and The Pot Luck Club. The restaurant will be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and, in keeping with its opulent old-world feel, many of the dishes are modern interpretations of classics. Breakfast will herald a new trend for the

City Bowl with the likes of shiitake brioche toast soldiers with boiled eggs, quinoa granola made in-house and classic Arnold Bennett omelette. The open kitchen will also feature a braai barbecue section and you can expect the likes of Kingklip with tamarind and palm sugar or crayfish with smoked sweetcorn coming off the grill. “We’ll be serving perfect tomahawk steaks, fillet and ribeye from our grill section,” Randles explains menu, “We are getting really creative with the sauces and sides – think savory churros, chips in duck fat and our signature café au lait sauce of The Pot Luck Club fame.” The stuffed petit Poussin will be roast to order and carved at the table, adding flair to the whole dining experience. That’s also where front-of-house manager Simon Widdison will come to the fore with his years of experience on the floor. For him, simple, efficient and personable service is at the core of the diner experience. The Shortmarket Club is located at 88 Shortmarket street and will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily (closed Sundays) It is open to the public from 27th June.

CAST IN BRONZE Bronze Age Foundry has become a Cape Town creative highlight. Here, founder Otto du Plessis shares the foundry, studio and gallery’s inner workings. 021 461 2856 10 Lewin Street, Woodstock Open Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm. Saturday by appointment.

How did Bronze Age begin? Bronze Age came to life nearly 20 years ago. I set up a small foundry in the garage of jewellery designer, Donald Greg who needed his sculptures to be cast. After that, I set up our first foundry in Simonstown in 1997, where Charles Haupt came to assist me with my moulding work. When Charles returned from working in a foundry for two years in London, he and I became partners. With our shared interests, we launched the functional art side of the business too. In 2011 we moved into our current space in Woodstock. What is the difference between the foundry and the design studio? Bronze Age is part foundry, part design studio and part gallery. The foundry, with a team of about twenty people, offers a casting service to other artists. The design studio is where Charles and I create our functional art pieces, which we show in our gallery at the Woodstock Foundry, as well as with Southern Guild, and for custom orders. Our casting is mainly done in bronze, but we also do cladding with copper and brass. At the design studio we’re a team of six. Charles and myself run the show, with the assistance of Trevor who is becoming an artist too, Le Roux who does a lot of the fabrication work, patterning and technical drawings, Joseph who is our all rounder and Precious who does waxes and repairs. How do you and Charles separate your interests to make Bronze Age what it is? Charles works fully in the design studio, dealing a lot with interior designers as well as making his own things, whereas I work in both the design studio and the foundry. When we aren’t working on a piece together, I work on more sculptural projects, while Charles is more design orientated. Tell us about the inspiration behind your sculptures. Both Charles and I are inspired by organic form. You’ll find bones, branches, and other natural references in our work. Personally, I’m interested in the theme of life and death, both visually and philosophically. Do you have any Southern Guild highlights you’d like to share? We’ve been walking a long path with Southern Guild, seeing it grow from the Johannesburg Art Fair to our show Heavy Metal with Southern Guild at the Woodstock Foundry, so it’s difficult to think of something specific, but if I were to say something it would be Design Miami. The international fair is a marker of how far Southern Guild has come representing South Africa as a top gallery in itself, held up against the world’s best. Visit www.bronzeage.co.za and www.southernguild.co.za for more info.

WE’VE SEEN Marc Lottering is one of South Africa’s top comedians and the recipient of several prestigious awards along his 16/17 years in the funny business. His self-scripted one-man shows, unique and popular characters such as Aunty Merle or Pastor Brandon, continue to play to packed houses and leave us all in stitches! We were lucky enough to grab a cuppa with Marc for a quick catch up - needless to say, far too many laughs were had! There is never a dull moment with this gentleman! Describe yourself in 3 sentences to someone who has never heard of you? A comedian from Cape Town. Born and Bred from the Cape Flats. Loves people and loves to make people laugh. Tell us something you have never told a soul? When I am consciously thinking about it, I spend a great deal of time during the day pulling my stomach. Sometimes it slips and I gotta catch myself, but at my age it’s a lot of focus! *giggles* So I spend a lot of time doing that *Chuckles* So the Funny Festival is coming up, talk us through the experience and what to expect? The Festival is cool in that it caters to everyone. You could completely hate one act and the or two you could be slapping your knee with laughter and loving it. Also, the producer Eddy Cassar pushes us to keep it clean which is a great challenge! *laughs* that’s why it’s not called stand-up, it’s called the Funny Fest, because it’s entertaining. There are varied aspects whereby you’ll get a stand-up comedian, but you can also get an amazing magician. Traditionally the Funny Fest also sources international acts from UK and States, so there are always surprises. It’s lekker to add that international flavour to our local mix.

At the moment I am working with my old high school writing and directing a musical for them. It gives me such joy working with young people – I’m even loving the untalented ones *burst out laughing* I look at some of the kids and I’m like “Come on man, there must be something!” *laughs* In the future I want to write more plays for professional actors and television. I’ve been asked to perform, but if I walked onto stage as MacBeth or Lady MacBeth, I don’t think I’ll necessarily get the response that is needed! *laughs* It’s important to stick to what you know, so I will stick to everything that is under the umbrella of comedy - that’s where I fly best. Sticking to the subject of Arts & Culture in SA, where do you see it heading? It’s an exciting time! Especially musically, you get the Mi Casas or Jimmy Neviss’ of the world and just look how they are taking over? It looks like the Arts aren’t being pulled down and stifled by the Political area. As a comedian sitting in JHB surrounded by newer comics, I need to sit still and be thankful for how gifted I am *laughs* tall, good looking and wears a suit well *chuckles* you look at the new guys and you’re like, “Joh bra, you look like you just threw up and came to the gig!” When I started out you had to write all the time – keep that pencil sharpened and ideas fresh. You had to be funny before you walked on stage. In SA, being a comedian is very cool. You’re a wanted commodity in regards to performing at events,

corporate gigs, launches etcetera, but there is the danger in the over population of comedians. If you go on stage and tell the same joke, the audience will go on social media and will annihilate you and the profession. In order to maintain, you need to keep writing. But times have changed. Overall I think it is important for comedians to stay challenged and sus - why is this person not wearing socks? *stares and customer is disbelief* - tian oneself. To the most important questions of all: Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer? A hunter I reckon. Because I love going clubbing and after 3 tequilas, I am prone to looking over my shoulder and going “hellooo...” *laughs* If you could be a superhero, what would your superpowers to be? Hmmm… to be invisible. I’m not going to tell you what my first act would be! *laughs out loud* Let’s just say it would just be awesome to be invisible. Lastly, if the world is a stage, where would the audience sit? On the stage? As Prince said, “Dearly beloved. We are gathered here today. To get through this thing called life.” – TLR

Time is moving on and it is already halfway through 2016! What’s in Marc’s diary? You know, all the comedians, well - the good comedians - ooooo! *laughs* will tell you that never stop learning. Now, after about 16 /17 years of being in the business, I can honestly say that it was only last year that I was able to find my groove - being comfortable with who I am on stage and how to settle down with my audience. I think, as a comedian, you spend the 1st decade wrapped in nerves and trying to find yourself on stage - picking up gestures and ideas from other international or fellow local comedians? It’s not good, because you need to try find yourself and find your own groove. I finally found it and now I’ve settle and telling my story which is going to go on forever – much like Joan Rivers *chuckles* I’m also at a place where I want to do a lot of work with other people.

WILDLIFE ALL YEAR AROUND The Klipspringer Mountain Pass not only provides visitors with spectacular views, but is also an example of civil engineering toil and precision. KGALAGADI TRANSFRONTIER PARK South Africa has a vast system of natural reserves to protect indigenous plants, animals, landscapes and cultural heritage.

• South African National Parks: www.sanparks.co.za National parks offer visitors an unparalleled diversity of adventure tourism opportunities including game viewing, bush walks, canoeing and exposure to cultural and historical experiences. Fifteen of South Africa’s 21 national parks offer park or camp-run accommodation. Most parks and rest-camps have retail facilities and restaurants. KAROO NATIONAL PARK The Great Karoo is a vast and unforgiving landscape of which the Karoo National Park is but a small portion. Being the largest ecosystem in South Africa, the Karoo is home to a fascinating diversity of life, all having adapted to survive in harsh conditions. The Karoo National Park is dominated by the lofty Nuweveld Mountains and rolling plains, with a wide variety of wildlife. Many species have been relocated to their former ranges, such as black rhino and buffalo, as well as Cape mountain zebra. Over 20 breeding pairs of black eagle find sanctuary within the park. There is also a wide diversity of succulent plants and small reptiles. The park has five species of tortoise, the highest density of species per equivalent area anywhere in the world. The Cape mountain zebra is well established in the park and visitors have the opportunity to compare its bold stripe pattern to that of the extinct quagga. The springbok - the emblem of the park and present in high numbers - is a reminder of the once massive herds that crossed the Karoo on annual migration, leaving a trail of devastation.

l Hello Cape Town July 2016

Dominated by the craggy bastions of the twin Knysna Heads, the lagoon has borne witness to centuries of trade in timber, ivory and gold. As a result of a relaxed lifestyle, Knysna has over the years, attracted a wide variety of art and crafters, creating an artists’ paradise. One of the last single gauge operational steam trains in the world travels between Knysna and George, called the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe.

They range from the vast flagship Kruger National Park – larger than some countries – to the tiny Bontebok National Park in the Western Cape. These are managed by South Africa National Parks, established by the government in 1926 and one of the world’s leading conservation and scientific research bodies.

marine life. Sandbanks and salt marshes teem with life and in turn provide food to an immeasurable number of organisms.

The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in the far Northern Cape was proclaimed in 1931 to protect migrating game, especially the gemsbok. Together with the adjacent Gemsbok National Park in Botswana, this park comprises an area of over 3.6 million hectares, consisting of red sand dunes, sparse vegetation, imposing camel thorn trees and dry riverbeds.

A speciality of the area is oysters. They are cultivated in the Knysna Lagoon and served in most of the local restaurants. The Knysna Oyster Company, established in 1949, is situated on Thesen Islands and offers daily educational tours, accompanied by fine cuisine. KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

It is nearly twice the size of the Kruger National Park, and the first Transfrontier Park to be established in Africa. Kgalagadi is the first park to provide accommodation in three wilderness camps that, with no fences, invite the Kalahari and the tranquillity of Africa right into your room. The name “’Kgalagadi” is derived from the San language and means “place of thirst”. Wildlife to look for in particular includes gemsbok, black-maned Kalahari lions and birds of prey. KNYSNA NATIONAL LAKE AREA (GARDEN ROUTE)

Knysna nestles on the banks of a beautiful lagoon in the heart of the Garden Route, in the Cape. It is surrounded by a natural paradise of lush indigenous forests, tranquil lakes and golden beaches. The exceptionally beautiful Knysna National Lake Area is home to the endangered Knysna seahorse and a large diversity of

The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the Lowveld, this national park of nearly 2 million hectares is unrivalled in the diversity of its life forms and a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies. Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Man’s interaction with the Lowveld environment over many centuries - from bushman rock paintings to majestic archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela - is very evident in the Kruger National Park. These treasures represent the cultures, persons and events that played a role in the history of the park and are conserved along with the park’s natural assets. The park has 13 rest camps, 11 bushveld camps, and 11 lodges.

MAPUNGUBWE NATIONAL PARK

Mapungubwe National Park in Limpopo is rich in biodiversity, great scenic beauty and the cultural importance of the archaeological treasures of Mapungubwe. From a hilltop on the northern edge of the park the visitor can view the confluence of the legendary Limpopo and Shashe Rivers, as well as two neighbouring countries: Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Rare finds of yellowwood and cedar trees, five-metre high cycads and tree ferns, are some of the plant species found here. All the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats as well as an amazing variety of birds including what’s probably the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures (more than 800 breeding pairs) in the world, have settled here. A narrow tar road takes visitors up to the top of the Waterberg massif, where the views and scenery are spectacular. From this height vultures soar past at close quarters. Antelope species such as reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, eland and tsessebe can be found in the park. MOKALA NATIONAL PARK

The park is the site where a developed African civilisation prospered between 1000 and 1290. The area was already inhabited by a growing Iron Age community from 900 AD and became rich through trade with faraway places like Egypt, India and China. This is the place where archaeologists excavated the famous golden rhino and other evidence of a wealthy African kingdom. Sandstone formations, mopane woodlands and unique riverine forest and baobab trees add to the experience. Khoi/San rock art shelters have also been uncovered. Elephant, giraffe, white rhino, eland, gemsbok and numerous other antelope species occur naturally in the area. Predators include lions, leopards and hyenas. Birds to tick off the list include the kori bustard, tropical boubou and Pel’s fishing owl. MARAKELE NATIONAL PARK

Addo, Karoo, Camdeboo and Mountain Zebra National Parks fall into the frontier cluster, which is located in the Eastern Cape. They include a variety of habitats across the parks, ranging from Nama-Karoo, grassland, montane, forest, valley thicket, fynbos and coastline. The Garden Route cluster lies in the picturesque Garden Route on South Africa’s southern coast, and features a range of habitats including rocky shorelines, temperate forests, lakes, rivers, estuaries and fynbos. Tsitsikamma and Wilderness fall into this cluster, as does the Knysna Marine Protected Area. Golden Gate, Mapungubwe and Marakele make up the northern cluster, which features savannah, thornveld or grasslands. Mountains are a feature of some. Mapungubwe is the location of another Unesco World Heritage Site.

Mokala is one of the country’s newest parks, situated in the far eastern corner of the Northern Cape. It comprises 19 611 hectares of Kalahari thornveld, savannah and Nama Karoo terrain interspersed with rocky outcrops, and with a wetland area that stretches for 18 kilometres. Mokala is a Setswana name for a Camel Thorn, an incredible resource to wildlife who survive in often harsh conditions characteristic of this area. Many animals have been relocated to the park and include black and white rhino, tsessebe, roan antelope, red hartebeest, buffalo, gemsbok and black wildebeest. PARK CLUSTERS

The Marakele National Park in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains in Limpopo, as its Tswana name suggests, has become a “place of sanctuary” for an impressive variety of wildlife due to its location in the transitional zone between the dry western and moister eastern regions of South Africa. Contrasting majestic mountain landscapes, grass-clad hills and deep valleys characterise the park.

south-western reaches of the Western Cape: the Bontebok, Table Mountain, Tankwa Karoo, Agulhas and West Coast national parks. Home to the endemic Cape Floral Region, also a World Heritage Site, these parks feature mountainous, coastal, riverine or estuarine habitats.

South Africa’s national parks are grouped in ecological clusters. The Kruger National Park is characterised by combinations of savannah, thornveld and woodland eco-zones. The arid cluster is characterised by arid climate, sparse vegetation and sandy soils, and consists of parks in the Northern Cape - Augrabies Falls, Namaqua, Kgalagadi Transfrontier, Mokala and |Ai-|Ais Richtersveld. The Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape is a Unesco World Heritage site. The Cape cluster parks are those within the

IN AND AROUND CAPE TOWN Table Mountain – also beloved as one of South Africa’s National Parks, is truly one of the seven wonders of the world. It’s unique eco-systems is rare in the sense that the park thrives and integrates with a pulsating and continuously developing city, Cape Town. The scenic views are breathtaking as it offers a sweeping view of Cape Town and Table Bay. Facts about sunscreens that travellers should know Ultraviolet radiation consists of 3 wavebands: - UVC 100 - 280nm which is blocked by the Ozone layer - UVB 280 - 320nm and - UVA 320 - 400NM According to a Survey that was conducted in the UK on 1500 female travellers, it was revealed that 22% would not use sunscreen and provided the following reasons: They are of opinion that they do not burn; Sunscreen is too expensive; The sunscreen does not work. Based on the above it is important that the emphasis should be placed on the importance of daily Solar Ultraviolet Radiation [DUVR]. Those people who have intermittent DUVR are more likely to develop basal cell Cancer or skin malignant melanoma than those people who have a continuous lifetime exposure as they are more likely to develop squamous cell Carcinoma. Melanoma numbers are growing more rapidly than any other cancer in the UK, USA and Australia and are doubling every one or two decades. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) concept The sun protection factor [SPF]is a figure calculated by the amount of Ultra Violet Radiation [UVR] required to cause sunburn on the protected skin with sunscreen applied relative to the amount of UVR required to cause sunburn on the unprotected skin (without sun screen).

Named after cardiothoracic surgeon Professor Christiaan Barnard who performed the world’s first human heart transplant in Cape Town in 1967, Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital is conveniently located in the centre of Cape Town. The 244-bed hospital offers a full range of medical services, is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and enjoys the support of dedicated healthcare practitioners.

SPF is not related to time of sun exposure but to amount and intensity which varies from time of day and latitude in the world where sun exposure is occurring. Logically a higher SPF provides more sunburn protection and for a greater period of time. It also protects against UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate deeper and are associated with aging and skin cancers. UVA protection should be at least 1/3 of the SPF and is measured by a star rating system. The ideal product would have SPF 30 plus a 4-5 star rating. Most people only apply half of what is needed. Application guide: • It should be 2mg/cm2 • Two tablespoons for an average person should be applied 20 minutes prior to exposure and be reapplied every few hours or after swimming, even if it is stated to be waterproof. • This equates to slightly more than half a teaspoon to each of the head and neck, right arm and left arm. Use slightly more than a teaspoon on each of the Chest and Tummy, the Back as well as the Left and Right leg! People should still only expose their skin to as much sun as they would without protection,

Tsonga: Modern Heritage Handstitched. Handmade. Handcrafted.

Tsongo’s long and celebrated journey began in the late 1990s when cheap imported footwear flooded the South African market, forcing many shoe manufacturers to their close doors. However, Tsonga’s founder, Peter Maree saw an exquisite opportunity to tap into niche market in high-quality leather footwear with a uniquely African style. Taking his two decades of experience in the industry and a team of top international designers and skilled technicians already in place, Peter and his team set out to find the unique hand-stitching skills that would be the signature of Tsonga Footwear for years to come. The aim was to transform 100% soft, genuine leather into the finest collection of footwear, handbags and accessories for buyers to indulge and love. Inspired by all things African, their trend-conscious designers put pencil-to-paper to create a conceptual design of a shoe that will be strong enough to take you on many a journey and will mould to your feet with the comfort and support that will make it hard to wear anything else! The top half of the shoe is cut from the finest leather, including all the necessary detailing – a Tsonga signature. Further, the shoes are finished with a soft leather sock. Now that the upper and the sole of the shoe have been made, it’s time to put them together. This is where Tsonga is special. Every shoe is individually handstitched by local people who love Africa. Handcrafted passion from a nation known for its vibrancy and creativity, every step in a pair of Tsonga shoes beings you a little closer to Africa.

26 years later in the heart KwaZulu Natal, The Thread of Hope farm, originally abandoned school building, has now become the training centre for locally skilled ladies from the rural community. This has empowered the ladies through business and an opportunity to learn skills in the manufacture of leather footwear. For many years now, it has been a place where women have gathered and conversation flowed to the rhythm of the work. Tsonga footwear, handbags and accessories have become renowned for comfort and quality with a unique European infused and African inspired style. Tsonga shoes offers an outlet in almost every major mall in South Africa as well as on-line, with deliveries all over the world. Outside of SA they have their signature shops in Byron Bay, Australia & in Bordeaux, France. For more info visit www.tsonga.co.za.

I decided to study Naturopathy - little did I know my whole life would change in an instant when I discovered the most amazing performance of healing bodywork. This was my turning point: Hawaiian temple massage. For the next 25 years I pursued this path and began to work internationally, writing 4 books in the process.

I returned home to Cape Town in 2008, the wild passion & beauty of this country sparked my artistic career to new heights. At the young age of 60 I am living my dream. I have my own gallery that showcases my works. It is also a venue for private dance classes in which I collaborate with a master Kizomba dancer, Braulio Faria, and as he dances with his students I paint the action. “To surrender to the music, to the dance, and to feel that passion flow through you is what the dance art experience is about Tel: 0740517433 www.leeorahhursky.com Gallery 301. WHAT TO SEE TABLE MOUNTAIN Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015 www.tablemountain.net KIRSTENBOSCH There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, land-scaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left.

The Aquarium holds over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins can be seen in this spectacular underwater nature reserve. The two ocean aquarium has established itself as a key player in raising environmental awareness through its high-quality exhibits, conservation and education programmes. Tel: 021 418 3823 www.aquarium.co.za CAPE OF GOOD HOPE There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera.

Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point.
