HELLO SOUTHERN GUILD Take a Seat Designer Laurie Wiid van Heerden shows that same same can also be very different Despite his 28 years of age, designer Laurie Wiid van Heerden has already made his mark on Cape Town, with his iconic benches dotted around the city – from Muizenberg’s beachfront to Prestwich Memorial and the Cape Town Station. Another will soon be added to the Castle of Good Hope, from where he received massive logs of iron wood. ‘They’re probably 200 years old,’ Laurie says, in awe of the fact that he’s able to work with such ancient pieces. ‘There’s such history to them, and it’s wonderful to be able to carve and shape these by hand.’ Hands play an integral role in his work. Despite the high-end manufacturing of his collectable benches that form part of the Southern Guild collection, he’s proud of the fact that each limitededition or one-off piece is also worked on by caring, talented hands. Whether it’s the hand of an artist friend with which he collaborates for the surface design – from grafitti by Atang Tshikare to paintings by Lionel Smit, or hand drawings by Anthony Harris of Ceramic Matters – or his own cladding of timber pieces for his Untitled (after WB) piece inspired by his early apprenticeship under sculptor Wim Botha, the hand is all-important. Laurie admits to being ‘obsessed with attention to detail’, which his gallery insists is what makes his pieces so highly sought-after and appreciated. ‘It’s incredible that someone so young has already found a unique voice in the industry,’ says Southern Guild Production Director Lezanne van Heerden, pointing to the collectable benches that are all of equal length (three-metres long), with two signature stainless-steel legs always displaying the same t riangular-type shape. Surfaces are always varied, and sometimes not what meets the eye. ‘Apparition Bench,’ he explains, ‘actually looks like something that it is not. People think it’s marble, but it’s in fact highly polished copper-plated mild steel, and it’s the plating process that makes it look milky.’ This bench caused a stir at Design Days Dubai, where it was premiered three years ago, before being shown at Design Miami/Basel. His latest bench in the making is a collaboration with young artist Gerick Terblanche. ‘It’s an all-white piece of mild steel onto which Gerick will paint his intricate study of butterflies and bird species, moths, proteas and fynbos in beautiful bright colours, turning it into a tattoo-like natural-history bench.’ Laurie has his eye on developing heirloom cabinets next, also in collaboration with his artist friends. ‘This way of working in collaboration with other artists keeps me inspired,’ he says.

ON STAGE OTHELLO

WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF

SWEET MR SHAKESPEARE

This summer, Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece Othello will be back for another season under the stars in the breath-taking natural setting of Cape Town’s historic Maynardville Open-Air Theatre. A twist of love, jealousy, passion and obsession powerfully combine in this devastating tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice, who betrayed by his close friend, Iago, kills his beloved Desdemona.

“Party! Party!” cries the drink-sodden Martha as the doorbell rings and two unsuspecting guests arrive for late-night drinks. The bourbon flows, and it becomes clear that an argumentative marriage conceals deep wounds. And as the young guests are lured into their hosts’ manipulative, savage mind games, they too must bare their fragile souls. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? has received almost every major theatre award, including the Tony Award for Best Play, and was adapted into a film starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. It is a ferocious and hilarious rollercoaster of a contemporary American drama – lyrical, moving and ultimately unforgettable.

Sweet Mr Shakespeare examines the reactions to him over the centuries and performs great passages from the comedies, tragedies and histories.

I’M PLAYING YOUR SONG – THE MARVIN HAMLISCH STORY Marvin Hamlisch was the man behind some of the most beautiful music of the twentieth century. From his humble beginnings as Barbra Streisand’s rehearsal pianist on FUNNY GIRL, to winning a record three Academy Awards on the same night at only 29, it was clear that he was destined for greatness. Not only was he the composer of famous hits like the ‘The Way We Were’, ‘Nobody Does it Better’ and ‘I Finally Found Someone’, he was also the composer of musicals such as A CHORUS LINE, THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG, and THE GOODBYE GIRL. Hamlisch penned the scores for dozens of films, including THE STING, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, ICE CASTLES, SOPHIE’S CHOICE, ORDINARY PEOPLE, SHIRLEY VALENTINE, HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS and THE INFORMANT. In short, his music shaped a generation. Theatre on the Bay, 13 Jan - 6 Feb, Tickets R95- R200 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi. DISTRICT SIX – KANALA On the 11th February 1966 District Six was declared a white group area. Over 60,000 people were relocated. A way of life was destroyed. Fifty years have passed and today hardly anything remains of what was once a thriving, densely populated, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural community. The Fugard Theatre, located in District Six, will pay homage to what was once District Six – the place and its people. Theatre on the Bay, 9 - 13 Feb, Tickets R100 - R200 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi. OOMA SISULU Based on the life and times of Albertina Sisulu, the play explores the basic concept of political activism: what gives birth to such an undertaking? How an individual, who may not initially regard herself as a militant, ends up being one.The play opens with Albertina in a supportive role of her family. Her husband, Walter, is an activist while she works as a nurse and is the mainstay of her family. She is huge on family love – big hearted. However, when the government passes the Bantu Education Act, she is thrown into the fray.

The ageless appeal of the music of Cole Porter is interpreted in dance, bringing to life the melodies and characters that are misted in the nostalgia of the 1940’s and 1950’s, when Porter was the master of the musicals. Presented by Cape Town City Ballet in association with Artscape.

SWEENEY TODD This musical thriller by American theatrical genius, Stephen Sondheim, features one of the greatest musical theatre scores ever written. It tells the strange tale of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, who murders his clients with a straight razor while they lean back in his barber chair, and shuttles the bodies down to his accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, who turns them into much sought-after meat pies. What drives a man to this sort of extreme? What tragedy lies in his dark and mysterious past? I CAME, I TAUGHT, I LEFT The young comeidan ditched the chalk board and school assemblies for a microphone and the stage. WE’VE SEEN The Parlotones, one of the hottest rock bands home-grown from Jozi has achieved multiplatinum-selling status here in SA and around the world! Hello Cape Town gets the chance to touch base with lead singer Kahn Morbee and catch up on what’s what: So! The grand question - How did the Parlotones form and how on earth did the name come about? We formed almost 18 years ago and We all just so happed to go to the same school – from primary to high school. It was actually a mutual friend of mine who I played rugby with who knew that I had ambitions to be in a band, and as he was a drummer, so did his friends. From there it was the cliché – we got together in his garage, Paul had played with Neil in a band prior to us starting so he came along to practise, his younger brother Glen joined in one of the practises and said he’d like to join the band, we needed a bassist and so *giggles* So we said “Ja cool, you can play the bass”. And then the name – that wasn’t our original name, our original name was Crayon Crayon? KAHN: *laughs* Ja, we tried to be ‘all creative’ in saying that your first creative instrument is a crayon and then everything kinda becomes an extension of that, but then our friends would mock us and say “what are you going to play at kid’s parties?” So then we dropped that name. After time, the bands we were into like The Smiths and The Cure had aspects we liked, so we put that in front of our band. The name was really taken from Parlotone Records from which we happened to be fans of bands from that record company, like Radiohead and The Beatles and it had a nice ring to it. We toyed around with ‘Parlostar’ but we eventually decided on Parlotones. You were all living in Los Angeles, what prompted you to move back home? KAHN: The initial visa period given was only 2 years and that’s pretty much how long we were there for. It was explorative in terms of deciding whether we really wanted to live there. Obviously those two years were used to build a fan base, but I think we realised a couple of things while we were there. As wonderful as these other countries may sound, home is still home. Despite our many problems, it’s still an awesome place to live in. Also, our family and friends are here and it’s

impossible to take them all with you. You don’t need to make anywhere your zip code to tour there. I hear you and Glen are rocking it solo? Could you tell me a little more? Last year I released a solo album called SALT and did a whole bunch of shows. Funny enough this week I go into studio to record my second solo album. Glen pretty much has just done his first debut solo album in Cape Town. I think it is good to have interests outside the band. To be honest, my only interest lies in song writing – I’m not exactly a big golfer! *laughs* It’s my version of leisure & entertainment. We’ve heard about this ‘Orchestrated Tour’? It sounds phenomenal! It starts in March or April. It’s actually a concept we test drove last year. We did a show with a 10-piece chamber ensemble, so not a full orchestra, and taking popular songs and giving them a different and dynamic experience. We’d be using those different instruments that we’d ordinarily play to create a more classical feel. Packing you bags again I hear? This time a birdy tells me you guys are planning a trip to Australia & New Zealand? It is more in the planning phase. We definitely have ambitions and it would be planned for August this year, but I don’t think we are ready yet - the right elements are not in place. We’d rather organise it right so when we do go it’s more of an effective process. Lastly, what would you say is your funniest or most embarrassing moment stage? For me, it was a show we had had in Germany. It was a packed and the lights were quite dark on stage. There was a monitor in the wings where you walk on, which I didn’t see, and I kinda ran on, not seeing this monitor, and BAM! I fell straight onto the floor *laughs* I just laughed at myself – the camera guy canned himself *laughs* I discovered the bruises the next morning and I’m thinking! Why are my elbows and knees so sore? *laughs* - TLR

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY ART IN THE GARDEN AT KIRSTENBOSCH NBG Extinction! Dinosaurs, and Cycads? is a new exhibition in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. It features nine dinosaur sculptures in tin by David Huni, a young Zimbabwean artist. They are life-size and anatomically correct and are placed in amongst the cycads in the Cycad Amphitheatre. The exhibition will highlight the fact that many of South Africa’s cycads are on the brink of extinction, and could soon face the same fate as the dinosaurs, but it is a crisis caused not by an asteroid impact but almost entirely by mankind. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness about the threats faced by cycads, and to increase public participation and support for cycad conservation and research. The exhibition will run until June 2017. Visit www.sanbi.org for more information.

Every Saturday at 11:00am there is a themed storytelling followed by an activity at this corner bookshop in the heart of Cape Town. Tel: 021- 462 2425. Book Lounge, 71 Roeland Street, Gardens. an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family.

How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go. Cool-Runnings, Toboggan Family Park lies just 25km from Cape Town city centre. Take the N1 towards Paarl, take Exit 23 at the R302 Durban Road/Willem van Schoor Ave. (off ramp is opposite Toys’R’us™.) Then turn left at the top into Willem van Schoor Ave. First set of traffic lights left again into Mispel Road. At the intersection with Carl Cronje Drive proceed straight into Cool-Runnings entrance which leads you to the public parking facilities. Visit www.cool-runnings.co.za for more information. Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong trichroism; appearing alternately sapphire blue, violet and burgundy depending on crystal orientation. This blue mystical gem has earned a reputation for possessing magical powers. It is thought that it has the power to elevate the bearer’s mood and release them from poor habits or addictions. It is also believed, that tanzanite is able to restore spiritual balance and good fortune. Our Cape Town facility demonstrates the science of tanzanite polishing and the craft of transforming a tanzanite crystal to a cut stone.

WILDLIFE ALL YEAR AROUND INVERDOORN

The

SHARK WHISPERER

with Supreme Sharks

On a trip with Supreme Sharks, a shark cage diving company working from Kleinbaai, clients have the unique opportunity to meet the free diving shark expert Andre Hartman on the trip or at the clubhouse. Andre is one of South Africa’s few self-taught shark experts and is respected as such throughout the world. He was one of the first to take the ‘cage’ out of shark cage diving and his pioneering work with the Great White attracted numerous film crews to Kleinbaai, the shark capital of the world. He has featured in many documentaries for Discovery, CNN and National Geographic to name but a few. Andre got the name shark whisperer when he accidentally discovered that touching the tip of its snout would cause a shark to lung up and back in a trance-like manner for a few seconds. After his 2nd stroke he struggles to walk but is getting stronger every day and dreams of going back into the water with these fierce creatures. He now shares his knowledge of the Great White and multitude of stories with the crew and our passengers. “I’m just mesmerized by how they move and what they do, and that fascinates me. They’re like an airplane - they fly in the water. Those wings flex with the weight of the body.” Andre Hartman, African Voices, CNN 24 December 2014

You will be captivated by the distinct markings of the zebra and the graceful gait of the giraffe, while the brute power of the buffalo and the majestic beauty of the Cape Barbary lion will astound you.Perched atop a safari vehicle or standing in a lookout point within the heart of the reserve you will be lost in the awesome vastness which surrounds you, as well as the solitude of the Karoo. Rangers add a rich element of humour and storytelling to the safari with anecdotes of the animals, wildlife facts and, most importantly, the threats facing many species today.

l Hello Cape Town February 2016

Boulders Penguin Colony in Simons Town is home to a unique and endangered land-based colony of African Penguins. This colony is one of only a few in the world, and the site has become famous and a popular international tourist destination. The Boulders section of Table Mountain National Park consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks were built as a measure to allow for viewing of these wonderful birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. This beach is ideal for children as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. At the safari lodge guest have the opportunity to unwind, and may even see the cheetahs going on daily walks with their handlers. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild. In 2012 Inverdoorn became home to the Big 5. Since its inception, the reserve has reintroduced many of the members into the region through their conservation efforts. The male lion was rescued from trophy hunting, while rhinos have a long history at the reserve, with their conservation led by RhinoProtect. This organisation developed a horn treatment to ward off poachers, and established an orphanage for calves victimised by poaching. Free-roaming elephants are also back, having been eradicated from the area for 150 years.

volatile creatures on safari. The Cape leopard has long been an inhabitant of the vast mountain ranges, but its solitary and nocturnal habits make it an elusive creature. The search for the Big 5 is the highlight of many safaris, and Inverdoorn delivers a once-in-a-lifetime experience searching for these famous creatures.

Duiker Island is a Cape Fur Seal and bird sanctuary, home to thousands of seals and many birds such as the Cape Cormorant, the Bank Cormorants, Black Back Gulls, Kelp Gulls and Hartlaub Gulls. It is illegal to go onto the island. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they

do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber. Breeding is a continuous cycle and takes place in November/ December in breeding colonies around the coastline of South Africa and Namibia. After fertilization there is a dormant period of 4 months and thereafter development continues, making the active gestation period 8 months. The pups are then born in late November early December. A cow usually only has one pup at a time when she reaches the breeding age which is 4-5 years old. She knows her pup by its smell and call and she will only mother her own offspring. Pups are entirely dependent on milk for the first 6 months. They are weaned between 8-10 months old. They grow quickly and start to swim at 6 weeks old. By about 7 months they can spend 2-3 days at sea on their own and can already swim long distances. It has been noted that tagged seals have swum from Cape Town to Cape Cross in Namibia, a distance of 1600 kms at the age of 8 months. The Cape Fur Seal dives to a depth of 36m on average but diving abilities varies between species. Their ears and nostrils close tightly when they dive and they cannot breathe underwater. Even while sleeping in the water they have to surface to breathe, every 10-15 minutes for young ones and 30 minutes for the adults. Drumbeat Charters from Hout Bay Harbour cruise to Duiker Island between 4-6 time a day and you can get there by using MyCiti bus or the City Sightseeing red, double decker busses of the mini peninsula tour. Reservation is no necessary but if you’d like to check the option off a private cruise or more details see: www.drumbeatcharters.co.za or call 021 - 791 4441 GREAT WHITE SHARK

For adventurous travellers, great white shark cage diving is a must! Day trips are offered by companies in Gansbaai, or boats leave from Simon’s Town. Great White sharks are some of Cape Town’s most famous and respected marine inhabitants. Love them or fear them, getting up close and personal with a great white is one of the most adrenaline-fueled experiences you can encounter while visiting the Cape. It is estimated that there are only about 5 000 great white sharks left in the oceans and the Kleinbaai and Gansbaai coastline of the Western Cape has the greatest concentration of these predators. The best time for viewing these beasts is between June and September. SHARK CAGE DIVING: The funds raised from great white experiences and tours in Cape Town are helping scientist learn more about their behaviour and funding shark research in the Cape. Most shark experiences happen off the coast of Gansbaai or Kleinbaai, two hours outside of Cape Town. Book with one of our accredited tour partners to make sure you’re in the right place at the right time and get face-to-face with the ocean’s greatest predator. Hello Cape Town February 2016 l

I decided to study Naturopathy - little did I know my whole life would change in an instant when I discovered the most amazing performance of healing bodywork. This was my turning point: Hawaiian temple massage. For the next 25 years I pursued this path and began to work internationally, writing 4 books in the process.

I returned home to Cape Town in 2008, the wild passion & beauty of this country sparked my artistic career to new heights. At the young age of 60 I am living my dream. I have my own gallery that showcases my works. It is also a venue for private dance classes in which I collaborate with a master Kizomba dancer, Braulio Faria, and as he dances with his students I paint the action. “To surrender to the music, to the dance, and to feel that passion flow through you is what the dance art experience is about Tel: 0740517433 www.leeorahhursky.com Gallery 301. WHAT TO SEE TABLE MOUNTAIN Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015 www.tablemountain.net KIRSTENBOSCH There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, land-scaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left.

Tel: 021 418 3823 www.aquarium.co.za CAPE OF GOOD HOPE There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera.
