HELLO SOUTHERN GUILD Artist Justine Mahoney turns her childhood memories intocoveted collectible characters.
Showing her latest collection of ‘child soldiers’ at Design Miami with Southern Guild this December, Justine Mahoney gives us the inside scoop on her influences for creating this multi-layered army. Tell us about your collection of ‘child soldiers’. Each series I create consists of 10 bronze sculptures. It is not an adult, real-life or war-movie representation of the soldier, but the child’s play version, where within each game there may exist the fool, the dreamer, the evil-doer, the saviour, the king, the hidden one, the heroine… The pieces are semi-autobiographical composites of imagery I have collected, characters taken from comic books and TV shows, overlaid with 1950’s nostalgia, representing an age of innocence. The armour [pretty coloured enamel painted over the bronze] is the sugar coating. In these pieces, physical limitations and emotional deformities exist on the same plane as fantasy and play. The fact that none of them have eyes means they become universal rather than specific. Their blankness allows for a certain amount of subjective projection from the viewer. Has your South African background influenced your artistic style? Definitely. My work explores the realm of childhood. I use memory as a source of inspiration for my work and have strong recollections of sitting on my nanny’s bed, which was placed on bricks to avoid the Tokolosh. She told me endless stories told to her as a child, and I became fascinated with African folklore. As a white girl growing

up in South Africa during the 1970s, I was sheltered from the harsh realities of the political situation surrounding me. So what comes through in my work is a veneer of sugar coating where all seems safe and happy – but scratch the surface and this is where the demons lurk. What else inspires your work? The circus, fairgrounds, freak shows, retro science fiction, children’s stories, Frankenstein, Star Wars, Dracula, Richie Rich, Little Lotta, Hot Stuff, graffiti, The Virgin Suicides, District 9, nostalgic family photos… My children’s drawings are a huge source of inspiration too. But mainly, I watch children play. I listen to what they talk about. My inspiration comes from trying to inhabit that magical space where most things are possible. Much of your work deals with physical and emotional trauma. What triggered this? When I was three, I was hospitalised for a bone-degenerating disease in my left knee, and for that year I wore a plaster cast. I have vivid memories of this experience, other sick children in my ward, being carried around by nurses, long corridors with fluorescent tubes reflecting on the vinyl floors, large menacing nurses looming over me, tucking me in, dreaming of spooks coming through the windows at night, injections, shiny pale yellow tiles in the bathroom, sitting on the carpet in the children’s playroom unable to walk, very concerned-looking doctors prodding me, and waiting for my mother to visit every day. My first miniature sculpture of a girl with a cast on her leg reflects this.
She was made more than 12 years ago. Is there a role you wish your artwork to play? The concept of innocence and the loss thereof is at play in my work. This loss comes when a child widens its awareness of evil or pain in the world. My work depicts an inner determination and will to move forward in the face of such adversity. I portray emotional states like strength, resilience, and braveness in the face of death, illness or pain, and my pieces reveal a power that propels us to move forward. I see my work as an evolving procession of child soldiers, standing steadfast and strong in the face of blows and knocks they may receive or have endured. Their role is not so much to heal but to bring on a sense of one’s ability to move forward through extreme situations.

City’s Festival of Lights to be celebrated under the theme
‘We Love Africa’ STATEMENT BY THE CITY’S EXECUTIVE MAYOR, PATRICIA DE LILLE
In line with our goal to build an inclusive city and our mission to establish Cape Town as the gateway to Africa, the City of Cape Town’s 2015 Festival of Lights will be celebrated under a ‘We Love Africa’ theme. The City will officially launch the summer holiday season with Cape Town’s largest and most inclusive free festive celebration, which takes place from 16:00 on Sunday 6 December 2015. As always, Adderley Street will be transformed into Cape Town’s biggest and most popular street party, focused on providing family fun. Stalls will line the street with a variety of offerings and provide early festive season shopping opportunities. At 20:30, I will once again flip the switch to illuminate the city’s historic thoroughfare and signal the start of the festive season. This year I will be joined by some special stars: four children chosen through a competition to help me light up the Mother City, transforming it into a beacon of unity and inclusivity. In the lead-up to the big moment, crowds will be entertained with the annual free live concert held on the Grand Parade. This year’s exciting artist line-up includes some of the country’s biggest names and most celebrated artists. Some of the artists performing in 2015 include: • three-time SAMA winners, Mafikizolo • multi-award winning rapper and ‘Man of the Moment’, Cassper Nyovest • Cape Town’s very own pop sensation, Jimmy Nevis • All-Star School Superband, Groove Essentials • award-winning Afrikaans-Sotho singer/rapper, Snotkop • the electronic jazz fusion hit-makers, Goodluck • the energetic and highly entertaining comedienne, Shimmy Isaacs Three large LED screens on the Grand Parade will allow spectators to follow all the action on stage, with an additional screen on upper Adderley Street. The Festival of Lights is always a highlight on the City’s events calendar, as we enjoy the evening with the thousands of fans on Adderley Street and the Grand Parade. I look forward to joining the crowd as we celebrate our inclusive city and usher in the time for family, friends and good cheer. The diverse artist line-up brings the perfect opportunity for everyone in the city to get together and share in the common love of music and entertainment. All streets leading off Darling Street will be closed from 10:00 until midnight on the day. No parking will be permitted in Darling Street and Adderley Street from 06:00 until midnight. Details of road closures will be advertised in due course. Orpheus in Africa is based on the little known story of Orpheus McAdoo and the Virginia Jubilee Singers’ tour of Queen Victoria’s colonies in the last decade of the 19th Century. Orpheus McAdoo was a free born son of a slave and a graduate from The Hampton Institute in Virginia. He was the first Black American impresario to perform in the British colony of South Africa where he and his group achieved unprecedented success. At the same time the musical charts the evolution of Black American music from spirituals (Jubilee songs) to jazz and includes several original songs by David Kramer. After the death of their grandfather, Poppy, a family heirloom propels cousins Daphna and Liam into a domestic battle of honour, faith and heritage. The devoutly Jewish Daphna is at odds with her secular cousin Liam, an entitled young man detached from his cultural traditions. Caught in the middle are Jonah, Liam’s younger brother, and Liam’s non-Jewish girlfriend Melody, who just wants everyone to get along. When the group is forced to spend the night in close quarters, hilarity and mayhem ensues. Hello Cape Town had the opportunity to have a chat with Scott prior to his 3-pronged tour: So Scott, this is your first time coming out to South Africa! How are you feeling about that? I feel really excited! Any expectations? I definitely have expectations of playing in front of people - my fans, who want to hear some good music; connect with them and put on a good rock n’ roll show. Starting at the very beginning, when and why did you start playing music? What was your inspiration? When I was second grade, that’s when I really started singing and performing. I was actually in the principal’s office because I was in trouble, being a hyper active kid. As I was sitting there, the music teacher walked in and asked the principal why I was sitting there and suggested that she could maybe you know, redirect me and guide me and maybe I should try out singing for the school chorus? I wanted to do anything to get out of the principal’s office so I went with her. She had me sing some songs on the radio just to hear how my voice sounded. I was always a pretty good imitator as a kid and she was impressed, so I got 3 or 4 solos in the first school play and the reaction was very good and supportive. I got the bug right then and there and I began singing in A Cappella groups in grade school. Soon after, a record came out with an album called ‘Pyromania’ when I was about 9 years old. Around about the same time I remember seeing photographs
and videos on TV and I saw these rock n’ roll stars, and the models that were in these videos and I said “If singing can get me that, I wanna do it!” So that’s kinda the story in a nutshell. It was in 1997 when your music career truly kicked off with Creed rocking the world over, selling over 50 Million albums worldwide, 4 American Music Awards and 1 Grammy Award! But I have to ask - where did the name ‘Creed’ actually come from? It’s funny, our bassist Brian was in a band prior to playing in our band in college and we were sitting around kinda brain storming band names. We had gone through ‘Symmetry’ and we really weren’t happy with it, then he mentioned he’d been in a band called ‘Maddox Creed’ and once he mentioned that, I said Creed! That’s it! And the reason I instantly connected with Creed as the band name was that I was writing the lyrics I’m thinking, Holy Sh*t! This is how I wrote lyrics and what I was talking about?! The band and everyone at the same time agreed that that was an awesome name and it stuck. How would you then describe your music evolution from 1997 up to your solo albums now in 2015? *silence* Wow. *silence* Yeah, you know I think the evolution corresponds with my life as a human being and my journey of going from you know, being 18 years old, and now in my early 40s, how perspectives change and how life experiences impact you. I think it’s really from a miracle standpoint; all from a perspective shift and an experience shift and from a music standpoint, I feel it’s evolved in

terms of just growing with life development as a song writer and as a musician in terms of getting things more concise, more impactful, you know? I know what I’m doing now. Now there was beauty in that naivety and that ignorance from my early career, and I can never go back and recreate that, but I definitely feel like now I know exactly what I’m doing. I’m finding at some point in time that I’m able to draw off from past experience - before I knew exactly what I was doing if you know what I mean? For sure! You have been rocking and rolling your whole life it seems? Do you have any musicians – present or past – that influence you, or that you admire? Oh absolutely! I think a band that’s had tremendous influence on me – you may not be able to hear it in my songs – but you might be able to, is U2. They had a tremendous influence on me. I really connected with them from a lyrical standpoint and how their music made me feel. It was emotional, it was passionate. Their lyrics were beautifully crafted and they were a band, a band of brothers, and it really drove me. That’s what I wanted to create, and that’s what I wanted to be involved in, also the direction and how I was going to write. I wanted to write songs that made people feel like people felt on ‘Joshua Tree’, and I don’t know if I have accomplished that yet, *laughs* but that’s definitely a band that’s influenced me.
From all your awards, and beloved by millions, I’d say you’d reached that point! Which song from your solo albums would you say is your favourite? You know that changes depending upon my mood at the time or you know, what’s going on in my life, but for right now, actually I’m really connected with the title track ‘Proof of Life’ from the Proof of Life album. There is just something about the musical dynamics of that song that inspires me, that connects with me, and then the lyrical content is just so personal and real to me it’s almost as if I’m looking in the mirror and singing that song to myself. So I really connect with that track. Coming to SA, what can we expect from you? I’m going to be doing a show that encompasses my entire career. Songs from all of my records. That’s my reality and that’s my representation of who I am as an artist, so you know the fans can expect to hear song off all 4 Creed records and songs off my solo records. Do you have a message to your fans? Most definitely! Proof of Life as a solo album coincides with where I’m at in life, coming out of some struggles, you know, feeling that I was held captive by these struggles, by these personal issues, these addictions, these depressions and various other aspects of my life. I really feel that many people all over the world at some point in time in their lives feel captive and feel trapped and held hostage by their situation - no matter what they are - and I think that I’m really bringing a message that we can free ourselves. We can. And even if it is just in moments. So I think the message would be to overcome, and hopefully I can bring some of those feelings through my music. - TLR

with Supreme Sharks
On a trip with Supreme Sharks, a shark cage diving company working from Kleinbaai, clients have the unique opportunity to meet the free diving shark expert Andre Hartman on the trip or at the clubhouse. Andre is one of South Africa’s few self-taught shark experts and is respected as such throughout the world. He was one of the first to take the ‘cage’ out of shark cage diving and his pioneering work with the Great White attracted numerous film crews to Kleinbaai, the shark capital of the world. Boulders Penguin Colony in Simons Town is home to a unique and endangered land-based colony of African Penguins. This colony is one of only a few in the world, and the site has become famous and a popular international tourist destination. The Boulders section of Table Mountain National Park consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks were built as a measure to allow for viewing of these wonderful birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. This beach is ideal for children as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Don’t touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. At the safari lodge guest have the opportunity to unwind, and may even see the cheetahs going on daily walks with their handlers. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild. In 2012 Inverdoorn became home to the Big 5. Since its inception, the reserve has reintroduced many of the members into the region through their conservation efforts. The male lion was rescued from trophy hunting, while rhinos have a long history at the reserve, with their conservation led by RhinoProtect. This organisation developed a horn treatment to ward off poachers, and established an orphanage for calves victimised by poaching. Free-roaming elephants are also back, having been eradicated from the area for 150 years.

volatile creatures on safari. The Cape leopard has long been an inhabitant of the vast mountain ranges, but its solitary and nocturnal habits make it an elusive creature. The search for the Big 5 is the highlight of many safaris, and Inverdoorn delivers a once-in-a-lifetime experience searching for these famous creatures.
The buffalo herd is healthy and continually expanding. You are bound to see these
Duiker Island is a Cape Fur Seal and bird sanctuary, home to thousands of seals and many birds such as the Cape Cormorant, the Bank Cormorants, Black Back Gulls, Kelp Gulls and Hartlaub Gulls. It is illegal to go onto the island. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they
do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber. Breeding is a continuous cycle and takes place in November/ December in breeding colonies around the coastline of South Africa and Namibia. After fertilization there is a dormant period of 4 months and thereafter development continues, making the active gestation period 8 months. The pups are then born in late November early December. A cow usually only has one pup at a time when she reaches the breeding age which is 4-5 years old. She knows her pup by its smell and call and she will only mother her own offspring. Pups are entirely dependent on milk for the first 6 months. They are weaned between 8-10 months old. They grow quickly and start to swim at 6 weeks old. By about 7 months they can spend 2-3 days at sea on their own and can already swim long distances. It has been noted that tagged seals have swum from Cape Town to Cape Cross in Namibia, a distance of 1600 kms at the age of 8 months. The Cape Fur Seal dives to a depth of 36m on average but diving abilities varies between species. Their ears and nostrils close tightly when they dive and they cannot breathe underwater. Even while sleeping in the water they have to surface to breathe, every 10-15 minutes for young ones and 30 minutes for the adults. For adventurous travellers, great white shark cage diving is a must! Day trips are offered by companies in Gansbaai, or boats leave from Simon’s Town. Great White sharks are some of Cape Town’s most famous and respected marine inhabitants. Love them or fear them, getting up close and personal with a great white is one of the most adrenaline-fueled experiences you can encounter while visiting the Cape. The best time for viewing these beasts is between June and September. It features nine dinosaur sculptures in tin by David Huni, a young Zimbabwean artist. They are life-size and anatomically correct and are placed in amongst the cycads in the Cycad Amphitheatre. The exhibition will highlight the fact that many of South Africa’s cycads are on the brink of extinction, and could soon face the same fate as the dinosaurs, but it is a crisis caused not by an asteroid impact but almost entirely by mankind. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness about the threats faced by cycads, and to increase public participation and support for cycad conservation and research.
