Hello Cape Town / 7

FESTIVE C CALENDAR Festive lights switch on moves to Cape Town station Cape Town’s largest public open-air event, the official switching on of the Adderley Street festive lights, is to move from the Heerengracht fountain circle to the Cape Town Station forecourt due to construction on the MyCiTi bus inner-city routes. Executive Mayor Dan Plato will officially launch Cape Town’s summer holiday season when he switches on the lights on Sunday, November 28 at 20:00. Over eighty thousand spectators are expected to gather in Adderley Street to watch the colourful extravaganza of light and sound. More than five kilometres of rope lighting have been used to create the various light creations, including the six metre high Christmas tree at the entrance to the Company Gardens. Of the 12 light installations, there are five brand new designs, including a huge rotating protea flower, boats, a new nativity scene and a Father Christmas. The other seven light crossings have been converted from last year soccer-theme displays into typical Cape Town festive images.

“The aim of this year’s festive lights ceremony is to thank Capetonians for their enormous contribution towards Cape Town’s successful hosting of the Fifa 2010 World Cup Soccer Tournament. We also want to re-ignite the gees and welcome tourists during the summer holidays,” says Mayor Plato. “The City will also use the occasion to highlight the impact of climate change. This year’s event marks the departure of the next SANAE weather team to Antarctica early next year. Their research helps to supplement international research on the changing weather patterns. “Since 2006, the City has succeeded in reducing its carbon footprint of the festive lights celebrations by halving its energy consumption with the introduction of rope lights. This year another innovation will be the ‘From Waste to Wonderful’ initiative. Several costumes of carnival parade characters will be made from recycled waste material,” he says. The festivities on 28 November kick off at 16:00 with a star-studded stage concert on the Cape Town Station forecourt.

Two large LED screens in Adderley Street will enable spectators to follow all the action on stage, with an additional screen on stage to track the carnival parade. The show will be complemented by a dazzling laser light display, which will be bounced off mirrors and buildings along the street.

With the theme ‘Celebrating Africa’s Greatest City’, the curtain raiser concert features a starstudded line-up of performers including James Bhemgee, the latest winner of the “SA’s got talent” television programme. The third runners-up, the Limited Edition drummers, will join Freshlyground, and local groups such as La Vuvuzela and the Gang of Instrumentals on stage.

ley Street, turn left into Darling Street and disperse at the Grand Parade. It will include brass bands, a fire engine with Santa Claus, dancers, giant puppets, stilt walkers, carnival characters and colourful floats.

The Adderley Street lights will stay up until mid-January 2011. Safety and security as well as emergency staff will be on hand to ensure people have a safe and enjoyable outing.

The carnival parade will involve over 1 500 participants. The procession will move from the Heerengracht Fountain, up Adder-

On Sunday, November 28, the streets leading off Adderley Street will be closed from 12:00 (noon) until midnight. No parking will be permitted in Adderley Street from 06:00 until midnight. Special parking has been arranged on the Grand Parade, Queen Victoria and Wale Streets.

CALENDAR APE TOWN will be off bounds to the public A designated area will be assigned for missing children at the Medic Tent on the Grand Parade The City will also provide the cleansing, toilets, traffic, fencing, security and medical services for these events, which are a must-see for everyone in Cape Town, local or visitor. The Malay Choir road march, which will take place over 1 and 2 January, comprises approximately 50 choirs and bands. The route starts at Keizergracht, proceeds along Darling Street, goes into Adderley Street and Wale Street and turns left into Bree Street. At this point the groups will board their busses and leave the city.

Final arrangements for Minstrel/Malay Choir road marches The Malay Choir and Minstrel road marches, which will be held in the city centre on 1 and 2 January 2010, are highlights of the Cape Town festive season. The traditional New Year’s Eve march will be held on 1 January 2010 due to religious considerations, and the annual tweede nuwe jaar road march will take place on Saturday, 2 January 2010.

Five troupes will start from the Bo-Kaap at 21:00 to join the start of the road march in Keizergracht. Traffic Services will manage the traffic flow crossing at Buitengracht Street. The procession will commence at 22:00 on 1 January and end at 05:00 on 2 January. The last team will start at 4:00 on 2 January to ensure that the procession will reach the

PLACES OF INTEREST In this coming Festive Season The City of

Cape Town invites you to explore and experience some of her well known and recognizable sites that has been refreshed and updated and uplifted in recent time as well as some new and old icons that are worth to be re-familiarising in person.

COMPANY’S GARDEN VISITOR CENTRE

The garden was established in 1652, making it one of the oldest gardens in the country. The display in the Visitor’s centre gives a comprehensive overview of the early history of the garden, which is unique in that it is the only example of how two different landscape styles – the Dutch ‘produce garden’ grid pattern and the ‘Victorian Romantic’ grid pattern and the overlaid to produce the garden as it exists today.

THE OLD CITY HALL

Built in 1905, the old City Hall in Darling Street is a mixture of Italian Renaissance and British colonial architecture. It is located on the Grand Parade to the west of the Castle of Good Hope and is built from honey-colored limestone imported from Bath in England. The 60m/200ft high bell-tower, with a carillon installed in 1923, was modeled on London’s Big Ben. The City Hall was the last major Victorian building to be erected in Cape Town.

This brewery was to be sited alongside the new railway line as an advertisement for Castle beer –a sort of early billboard. The Castle Brewery was completed in 1901, designed by New York architect H. Steinmann and was opened on the 1st April 1902, several setbacks to its completion, being caused by the second Boer War. www.oldcastlebrewery.co.za 021 448 4500

The City Hall’s carillon was installed as a WW1 war memorial, with 22 additional bells being added in 1925 with the visit of the Prince of Wales. Magnificent and imposing, the City Hall commemorates Kind Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, with its mosaic floors, marble staircase, stained glass windows and specially designed organ with 3165 pipes.

The Houses Of Parliament are an architectural wonder. Gallery tickets are available from Room 12. Overseas visitors must present their passports. The parliament building, which also houses the Library of Parliament, is beautiful, with its central dome and Corinthian porticos and pavilions. You can also sit in the public gallery during a parliamentary session. The original designer, Charles Freeman, miscalculated the foundations and was replaced by Henry Greaves, who oversaw the building until completion in 1885. The new House of Assembly was designed by Sir Herbert Baker. A pedestrian walkway, Government Avenue, runs through the Company Gardens and provides easy access to Parliament and other nearby attractions are Greenmarket Square, the Castle of Good Hope and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. KAYAKING One of the most unique places in the world - a penguin colony in suburban Cape Town! And the best way to see it is from the water. We leave from Simon’s Town Waterfront and paddle past the civilian and Naval Harbour and out to Boulder’s Beach. After visiting the penguins we stop on a lovely semi-private beach for refreshments, swimming and snorkelling (we provide the snorkels and bottled drinking water.) Our double kayaks are very stable and perfect for those with no paddling experience. By far our most popular trip. During the whale season from August to October there is a good chance of seeing whales as well. Read an article about seeing whales when paddling here. There were also exports to India and the Emperor of Japan in 1658. The first documented ostrich farm was established in the centre of Cape Town in 1679. Located near Oudtshoorn, in the Klein Karoo, is a universally unique conservation project, and its here that you can get up close, within a few metres of their burrow, to a group of extraordinary meerkats or suricates - the only wild community known to exist outside the Kalahari. Tours are done strictly on an ‘observe and conserve’ basis, with very limited numbers permitted to visit at a time, so the troupe, who migrate in search of food constantly, are never interfered with or disturbed. It’s best to seek out these highly social, fiercely territorial and endlessly entertaining creatures at sunrise or dusk; and aside from getting all the meerkat low-down, you’ll learn about the other Shy 5 members – porcupine, antbear (aardvark), bat-eared fox, and aardwolf.

The Overberg, meaning area "over the mountain", consists of large agricultural fields, which form the modern day habitat of the blue crane. While about 25 000 of the elegant birds remain common in big areas of their historic range, there has been a sudden population decline in the last 25 years and the crane is now classified as vulnerable. 1. Blue Route: This route is on a dirt road with fairly rough patches and corrugations. However, it is very scenic and parts are shady as gum trees line the road.

YEAR ROUND parts are shady as gum trees line the road. One will pass through several different types of farming operations. 2. Purple Route: The majority of this route is on a tar road with a dirt road section that is in a fair condition if it has not rained heavily. This route takes one through rolling fields of wheat and past farm dams which often attract Blue Cranes and other birdlife. 3. Green Route: This is an interesting route with lots of wildlife. TOURISM NEWS Minister announces 27 South African Blue Flag Beaches

Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Minister of Tourism, announces 27 Blue Flag beaches for 2010/2011 South Africa can proudly celebrate 10 years of the Blue Flag programme this year with 27 beaches being awarded Blue Flag status for 2010/2011, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Minister of Tourism, said recently.

He announced that the South African beaches that have received Blue Flag accreditation for the 10th year of Blue Flag in South Africa are:

'I have no doubt that 2010 is going to be a bumper year for tourism in South Africa and by launching the Blue Flag beaches, we kick off the summer holiday season in the country. I invite local and international visitors alike to enjoy the fantastic tourism offerings of our municipalities and I would like to congratulate all 27 Blue Flag beaches on flying the flag high for South African excellence,' Minister van Schalkwyk said. South Africa was the first country outside of Europe to implement the Blue Flag programme and it was launched here in November 2001 as part of the South African Government's CoastCare initiative. Since 2001, the Blue Flag programme has become

- Lucien Beach, Margate - Trafalgar Beach, KwaZulu-Natal south coast - Marina Beach, KwaZulu-Natal south coast - Ramsgate Beach, Ramsgate - Margate Beach, Margate About the Blue Flag Organization: Blue Flag gives local and foreign visitors the knowledge that their beaches are clean, environmentally sound and adhere to international safety and other tourist standards. In the last 10 years, the Blue Flag programme has helped raise the standards on South African Blue Flag beaches in a significant way. When South Africa joined the campaign in 2001 as the first country outside Europe to participate, Blue Flag began to grow into a truly international campaign, and the "Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe" changed its statutes and name to become the "Foundation for Environmental Education". By joining FEE, South Africa opened the door for numerous countries outside Europe to join FEE in the last 10 years. This is also why the international Blue Flag coordination was pleased to join the South African Minister of Tourism, Mr. Marthinus van Schalkwk to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Blue Flag in South Africa. The International Blue Flag Coordinator also visited some beaches whilst in South Africa, all showing compliance with the Blue Flag criteria. Local authorities report a number of spinoffs from being awarded Blue Flag status, including an increase in visitors, improved behaviour on the part of beach-goers, property prices rising for homes near Blue Flag beaches – and visitors enjoying a well cared-for and managed beach. WHAT WINE ROUTE? Not sure where to go for a wine route adventure? It all depends on how much time you have and how much of day - or week - you’d like to make of it. For those with very little time, you’ll be happy to know that Cape Town’s CBD presents a host of wine bars that will guide you through a virtual wine tasting of practically any estate you choose. But for those who do have some time...

Constantia Valley

Stellenbosch Wine Route

Franschhoek Wine Route

Constantia Valley is the wine route at the heart of the Mother City (or at least a little to the left of it). This is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and stretches from Wynberg hill in the north, to the Silvermine mountains (the Tokai area) in the south. The five wine cellars on the route boast a winemaking history dating back to 1685 .

The Stellenbosch Wine Route was the first in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes 148 cellars - most of which are open to the public. From Cape Town take the N1 in a northerly direction and turn off at the Exit 39 onto the R304 and follow through into Stellenbosch. Franschhoek was founded over 300 years ago when the French Huguenots settled in the Berg River Valley. The wine route here is comparatively small with only 29 cellars, but what it lacks in wine route variety, it makes up for in quality cuisine and breathtaking scenery. A perfect mini-break destination. Franschhoek is 85km outside of Cape Town.
