Origins of the Cotton Club The Show got its name from thefamous night club in New York City that operated between the 20’s and 40’s. Whilst the chic club featured many of the greatest African American entertainers of the era, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Nat King Cole, it also served as a chic meeting spot in the heart of Harlem, at which celebrities such as Mae West and Irving Berlin would appear. Inshore fishing is a great way to catch fish and, as the name suggests, involves fishing close to the shore. This type of fishing is quite popular in Cape Town and with Cape Sea Safaris, you will enjoy a world class experience. Deep Sea Fishing can be enjoyed all year round in Cape Town with Yellowfin tuna usually arriving in large numbers between March and June and again from October to December. Inner city loop The inner-city loop service will provide a safe, quick, reliable way for tourists and locals to travel around the inner city, passing tourist attractions and nightspots as well as venues where many Capetonians live and work. This service gives Capetonians a taste of things to come, as a similar inner-city service is to be part of Phase 1A of the MyCiTi service, which is to be completed after the World Cup. The service that was launched will consist of two loops, travelling around the city in opposite directions. The two loops follow the same route except for Long and Loop Streets, which are one-way roads. The service runs past a host of tourist attractions including the nightspots of Long Street, the Labia Theatre, Government Avenue, the District Six Museum and the Castle. It also travels close to Greenmarket Square, Bo-Kaap and the Gardens Centre. The stop at the Cape Town International Convention Centre is close to several hotels - the Grand Westin, Arabella Sheraton, Cullinan, Southern Sun, Protea North Wharf and the Capetonian. The inner-city loop has been designed to intersect with other transport services. Passengers will be able to transfer from the two new MyCiTi services on to trains, Golden Arrow buses, minibus taxis and metered taxis - to travel to the Atlantic Seaboard, Cape Flats and southern and northern suburbs. The IRT bus doors open a meter above ground to allow people, wheelchair and prams to move straight onto or off the raised platform of IRT station quickly and easily. Inside there are large, clearly marked areas where seats can be folded away to accommodate wheelchair, bicycle or baggage. There are also liquid crystal display (LCD) panels and variable messaging boards to entertain passengers. The articulated buses are equipped with security cameras. Tickets at R8 each (cash only).

THE DARWIN TRAIL Few are aware of Charle Darwin’s ties to South Africa and the Cape in particular. On his way home to England from South America, Darwin docked at the Cape, visiting areas we know today as Simon’s Town, Wynberg, Paarl, Franschhoek and Sir Lowry’s pass. He recorded sightings of animals such as elephants, rhinoceros, the extinct kwagga and more. He traveled with a “four guide” – a Khoi man – dresses in top, hat and tails. Constantia Valley is the wine route at the heart of the Mother City (or at least a little to the left of it). This is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and stretches from Wynberg hill in the north, to the Silvermine mountains (the Tokai area) in the south. The five wine cellars on the route boast a winemaking history dating back to 1685 .
The Stellenbosch Wine Route was the first in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes 148 cellars - most of which are open to the public. From Cape Town take the N1 in a northerly direction and turn off at the Exit 39 onto the R304 and follow through into Stellenbosch. TOURISM NEWS SUCCESSFUL WORLD CUP A BOOST FOR SA TOURISM The positive global media coverage South Africa has received during the 2010 World Cup has exceeded all expectations and will benefit the country's tourism industry long after the tournament ends. According to the Department of Tourism, the World Cup has showcased the country to an international audience of approximately 32 billion viewers and introduced South African to non-traditional markets in Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia. "We were always confident that our country and our people would show the world what a superb destination we offer, and yet the overwhelming positive international coverage has surpassed even our most optimistic expectations. The goodwill that has been unlocked cannot be measured in monetary terms," Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said. In the years leading up to the tournament South African Tourism (SAT) spent about $100-million (R770-million) on marketing and advertising the country to a global audience and got the message across to 1.9 billion people every month. "This investment in marketing and advertising by SAT is a mere drop in the ocean compared to the positive reporting on South Africa as a country and a tourism destination that has flooded global media channels since the kick off of the Word Cup on 11 June," the minister said.
But it will be a few months before the exact figures on tourism during the World Cup are released. "As in all other countries it is normal practice to allow two to three months before the release of statistics in order to ensure data cleaning and analysis," the minister explained. Van Schalkwyk said government would rely on information collected, analysed and released by Statistics South Africa, the Department of Home Affairs and SAT. "We would caution against premature impact analysis based on ad hoc and anecdotal sources. Some of the figures recently released did not, for example, distinguish between actual tourists and day visitors from neighbouring countries visiting South Africa for reasons other than tourism," the minister said.
CAPE TOWN DOES IT AGAIN Cape Town has once again made it onto another global list for its exceptional beauty. This time, Forbes magazine has named Cape Town one of the twelve most beautiful cities in the world. The Forbes list, released earlier this year, puts the Mother City on a par with Paris, Vancouver, Sydney, Florence, Venice, San Francisco, Chicago, New York City, Cambridge, Tokyo and London.
The country's tourism sector is now gearing up to capitalise on the success of the World Cup and the exposure the country received.
Cape Town is the only city from a developing nation to have made the cut, and the only one on the African continent.
Van Schalkwyk said the World Cup was not an end in itself for the tourism sector but a milestone in the industry's growth trajectory.
Forbes was particularly impressed by Cape Town’s open spaces. According to environmental engineer Raymond Levitt, the city was also singled out for its small ecological footprint compared to sprawling metropolises like Tokyo and New York.
The World Cup would lay a solid basis for a new decade of growth and development, he added. "Our tourism industry is geared to make the most of the opportunities created by the World Cup. The championship will be recorded in the history books as one of the best showcases ever for South Africa and Africa and I am convinced it has opened up the door to our destination to scores of new visitors," Van Schalkwyk said. According to the department the latest figures show that more than 1.9 million tourists arrived in the country from January to March 2010 - an increase from the 1.6 million during the same period in 2009. "South Africa's tourism arrivals for the first quarter of the year exceeded our expectations, and we are confident the World Cup will help us achieve our ambitious growth targets for 2010," the minister said.

The Overberg, meaning area "over the mountain", consists of large agricultural fields, which form the modern day habitat of the blue crane. While about 25 000 of the elegant birds remain common in big areas of their historic range, there has been a sudden population decline in the last 25 years and the crane is now classified as vulnerable. 1. Blue Route: This route is on a dirt road with fairly rough patches and corrugations. However, it is very scenic and parts are shady as gum trees line the road.

Purple Route: The majority of this route is on a tar road with a dirt road section that is in a fair condition if it has not rained heavily. However, the dirt road section can be rough and difficult to travel on in wet conditions.
