“Keel” by Emmanuel Hatzofe At The Container (Art Space, Bar & Restaurant)

Tel Aviv Museum of Art Israel’s main art museum hosts more than half a million visitors per year. It features a dynamic program of changing and permanent exhibitions, cultural programs of classical and jazz music, performance arts, lecture series, special events, children’s programs, dance, and cinema. 27 Shaul Hamelech Ave, Tel Aviv Tel: (03) 6077020. Opening Hours: Mon, Wed, Sat 10am- 4pm, Tues, Thur 10am-10pm, Fri 10am- 2pm. Sun closed. www.tamuseum.com New EXHIBITION Exhibition of Emmanuel Hatzofe “Keel” At The Container (Art Space, Bar & Restaurant) Using The Container as a springboard, themes of space and place in time, play central roles in the exhibition. As we see Jaffa developing, the port and the old city are experiencing a sudden flurry of cultural activity. ‘Keel’ explores the role of The Container in the Jaffa renaissance and its physical positioning in an undefined place –existing between land and sea. (The Keel is the backbone of a boat). Emmanuel Hatzofe’s studio at the end of the pier is an old train carriage, and like a Masonic alchemist lab, is a treasure trove of sculpture. Inspired by his surroundings, Emmanuel produces stone sculptures in a

technique that is slowly dying out, using a chisel and hammer to break out of solid pieces of basalt, granite and marble his reduced and sensual shapes. Hundreds of Origami fish that are suspended in the space reinforces the sculptures as it addresses the vast space in The Container. Runs from June 2 - July 3. Old Jaffa Port, Warehouse #2, Tel: (03) 683 6321, Mon-Sun 12:00 to late. Tel Aviv Museum of Art The Sculpture of Edgar Degas The exhibition presents, for the first time in Israel, Edgar Degas’ (1834–1917) 74 sculptures in bronze. The bronzes were cast from plasters made directly from Degas’ original waxes. Degas worked in various artistic media: oils and pastels, etchings and photography, painting on monotype plates and sculptures in wax, as well as writing poetry. He exhibited only one sculpture in his lifetime: “The Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen” – a realistic wax sculpture which he dressed in real clothes which aroused much curiosity and criticism when presented in 1881 at the sixth Impressionist exhibition in Paris. His sculptures focus on five main themes, presented here as five chapters: dancers in motion, dancers behind the scenes, bathers, portraits and horses. Exhibition runs from March 26 until June 26.

"Shelf Life" Haifa Museum of Art This exhibition is one in a cluster of eight concurrent exhibitions that explore the phenomenon of collecting and collections. :”Shelf Life” investigates the growing interest in "collecting" expressed by contemporary artists. The works in this exhibition reflect the aesthetics of various "collections" and give expressions to acts of collecting and ordering. They raise questions such as what transforms an accumulation of objects into a "collection," and what drives artists to collect. The exhibit demonstrates how contemporary Israeli and international artists relate in their work to various types of collecting, while examining the aesthetic syntax of various kinds of collections and the psychological aspects of collecting and of the artist-collector's obsessive world. Art & CULTURE Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor’s “Post Martha” Inspired by Edward Albee's "Who's afraid of Virginia Wolf", this performance is a psychological journey that looks into the complex relationship of the infertile Martha and George, as they are confronted by a vivid young couple. The behavior of the characters escalates the tension on stage, as reality and illusion mix constantly up to a boiling point where the fantasy looses its calming impact. Suzanne Dellal, June 15, 9pm [90NIS] Spanish and Argentinian Nights After overwhelming success in New York and Japan, this stirring and exciting show combines Spanish and Argentinian tango music with Flamenco and tango dance. Virtuoso Tali Roth on guitar, flamenco legend Sylvia Duran and her dance group along with members of the Israeli Philharmonic orchestra. Suzanne Dellal Center, June 24 and 26, 9pm; June 25, 10pm [125NIS] Yasmeen Godder’s “Love Fire” Performed to classical waltz music, a complex and humorous journey evolves dealing with different understandings of what is "romantic". The desire to fall in love, to lose control, to be transformed is explored through physical and plasticized images which give a new twist to stereotypes of male and female identity. The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company – Harlem, USA Celebrating its 25th Anniversary season, this energetic and engaging dance company presents a work using text, original music and film in order to contemplate our connection with history and its influence on us. “Serenade/The Proposition” approaches the legacy of Abraham. On the eve of the Bicentennial of Lincoln's birth, some of his documented words, his contemporary's writings and speeches, and other texts are used to set up the push and pull of historical perspective. Our connection to history - or lack thereof - is evoked through video and an original score blending classical and folk music in a contemporary pastiche. This work transports the viewer through time with its iconic set design and Jones' cast of fierce dancers. SHOPPING & FASHION Take a piece of Jerusalem with you The Moriah Collection Magnificent jewelry set with original stones from the Temple Mount

Jerusalem, sacred to three religions, has always been the center and heart of the Jewish people and the focus of their longings in exile. Its glorious past, its tumultuous history and its supreme sanctity make Jerusalem a spiritual center worldwide. Inspired by the city and its symbolism, the IDC (Israel Diamond Center) group, specializing in design, manufacture and trade in precious jewelry and diamonds, is launching a collection of opulent jewelry inlaid with original stones from the Temple Mount - the Moriah Collection. This collection is the first of its kind in the world with a registered patent, since the jewelry is inlaid with original stones from the Temple Mount. "Take a piece of Jerusalem with you" - the slogan that accompanies the Moriah collection expresses the fact that anyone, whoever they may be, can take a ‘piece’ of Jerusalem, the holy and eternal city, and place it on their heart. Each item of jewelry in the Moriah collection is designed and made by hand, projecting a potent message through the unique combination of materials that represent the power, the value and the sanctity of Jerusalem: diamonds - the hardest and most precious stone in the world, gold - the noblest of metals, and Jerusalem stone from the Temple Mount - the holiest place in the world for more than 3000 years. IDC's jewelry designers have retained the raw integrity of each stone from the Temple Mount in order to preserve its originality, suffused with sanctity and symbolism. The Moriah collection is made up of items in a limited series, the number of items in each series being around 7, a number of special significance in Judaism. The name Moriah, chosen for the new collection, refers to Mount Moriah where Abraham bound his son Isaac for sacrifice - which is the Temple Mount on which the temple was built in Jerusalem and from which the stones in the jewelry were taken. A few years ago, the Waqf carried out expansion work on the Temple Mount

and a large quantity of excavated material was removed. In 2004 a tent was set up in Emek Tzurim, at the foot of the Mount of Olives, in which to sift through the excavated material from the Temple Mount. From this came dozens of coins, pieces of jewelry, clay lamps, mosaic stones, pottery shards, glass and stones from the Temple Mount from which the Moriah collection was made. Each piece of jewelry sold at IDC carries an international gemology certificate from leading global institutions such as IGC, EGL, GIA, and so on, and buyers receive full and accurate documentation for every

diamond purchased. The IDC customer base mainly comprises buyers from abroad, especially from the countries of the former Soviet Union and eastern Europe, as well as tourists from western Europe, the United States and the Far East. The showroom is set up accordingly, with sales people who speak a number of different languages. The company has a Russian language website, and will shortly be putting up websites in additional languages. The website is popular among existing customers, who use it to place repeat orders. Along with the launch of the Moriah collection, there is also a designated website for the collection at: www.moriah-collection.com Avi Tavisal, CEO of IDC, says that “as a native Jerusalemite, eighth

generation in Israel, the Moriah collection is very special for me because it represents an emotional combination of materials, design and art. The pieces of jewelry arouse a sense of spiritual elation in every viewer." Tavisal adds that "even before launching the collection list, we were asked to design individual pieces of jewelry created especially as gifts for world leaders and personalities." Plans are currently underway between IDC and the Ir David (City of David) tourist site in Jerusalem for designated items of jewelry from the Moriah collection to be designed

for Ir David, incorporating design elements relating to David's city such as David’s harp, the king's palace, and so on. The Moriah collection has been designed and produced by IDC under the Tavisal label, combining new and old, art and advanced technology in the design and manufacture of luxury jewelry. The Moriah collection can be found at IDC House, 1 Jabotinsky St, Ramat Gan, and in the Gold Time chain in Jerusalem in King George Street and the Jerusalem Mall, Malcha, or in the Rolex store in Mamilla.
