hen our little center became just too small for our twice-a-week Fit-N-Fall-Proof™ classes, it was decided to expand classes to four times a week, adding two new instructors. The instructor we received from Panhandle Health for our Thursday class is Katherine Hanna, our subject for this quarter’s article. She has also conducted a two-part cake decorating class for us and her daughter was a member of our Board of Directors. Katherine was born right here in Coeur d’Alene on August 14, 1943, at what was then a maternity home, as women did not give birth at the hospital. She attended Bryan Elementary in Borah and then CDA Junior High on 7th Street and then Coeur d’Alene High School on 15th Street. She was a member of the Vikettes drill team and the drama club and joined

New Location Those of you who frequent the Hayden Senior Center know that it can become extremely cramped at popular classes or events. Even though we began a search for a different location many years ago it continues to elude us. The problem is, with a $93,000 annual budget it is tight trying to afford anything, especially our own building. Our dedicated staff works far more than the part-time wages reflect. Ever conscious of our budget they do many things above and beyond the pittance we are able to pay them. Driving around the County we notice other cities have their own free-standing senior centers. Coeur d'Alene has their Lake City Center, Post Falls has a large center, Rathdrum has its own while we are located in an aging strip mall with a kitchen the size of many home kitchens. Sure, we make do. As anyone who visits will tell you we provide a cheerful place with excellent meals, classes and

fun activities. As our population ages though, we wonder how we will accommodate the increasing numbers of our citizens who crave social intercourse with peers. Come to a meditation class or bridge game. See how cheerful everyone is and how cramped the quarters are. In our wildest dreams a donation of a building or land would enable us to grow to meet our growing needs for the future. We believe the City of Hayden and its citizens support our efforts but we really need the support of the entire community if we are to be successful in our quest for more suitable quarters. When doing estate planning or charitable giving, please remember your Hayden Senior Center. Stop in for a visit and you will immediately see why it is important not only for our participating seniors but for our community ■

How do I shop at AmazonSmile? To shop at AmazonSmile simply go to smile.amazon.com from the web browser on your computer or mobile device. You may also want to add a bookmark to smile.amazon.com to make it even easier to return and start your shopping.

Here at Legend’s Park Assisted Living, we take care of the details while you have all the fun!

break even. The good thing is our membership is growing. The challenge is that more members means more people to serve. This translates to higher expenses for utilities, staffing, and supplies to meet the demands for increased services and programs. It is our mission to keep membership affordable to all seniors. With membership fees at $15.00 per year combined with what we collect in quarterly newsletter advertising and the City’s support, we do not begin to cover these expenses. Another dilemma we have faced for years is the lack of space to house more people and activities. We do not qualify for certain grants because we do not own the building or land. The search for larger, more up-to-date quarters and better parking facilities continues. But the fact remains, unless we have the money or land, this search may be a pipe dream. 4 Full Time Nurses

Hayden Senior Center / Jul-Sep 2016 - 25

Both of them live in the Hayden area within a mile of her so they get to see each other frequently. She has two grandsons, Zach and Alex by her daughter, and two granddaughters, Hailey and Olivia by her son. Her granddaughter, Hailey, just broke the school record for triple jump for CHS. Everyone in her family is a CHS Viking! Twenty-three years ago, Katherine married her second husband, Kim Hanna, and has been happily married ever since. Angel from page 2

Later, Katherine started her 28 year career in real estate, retiring in 2008. While still in the business she began to work with a trainer, Chelsea Rosenberger, who encouraged her to train for the triathlon. She agreed and began her regimen immediately, going on to compete at least eight times. She says the hardest part was learning competitive swimming at 62, but she finished every one and has several medals to prove it. It is Katherine’s belief that you are never too old to challenge yourself and that is what motivated her to begin training others in our Fit N Fall Proof classes. She says, “It’s a very rewarding endeavor because you see people re-gain balance & strength. Everybody is here for a different reason but we all gain even in areas that we did not anticipate. It’s the realization that we get back areas of our lives that we didn’t even know we had lost. Most people come in here at the insistence of their children, doctor or friend who notice their digression of balance and strength. We test them every 10 weeks and the progress is obvious and sometimes profound. One lady told me she had not been able to get up without holding onto something for three years and when she was later re-tested, she bounced right up. It is so rewarding! I even have a 94 year old who is doing the ‘plank’!” Katherine is very excited about an upcoming trip to Italy this summer with her son and his family. They will be visiting Rome, Tuscany and Venice and she will be attending some cooking classes. If she is as good a cook as she is a cake decorator, there will be some great meals coming out of her kitchen. She has even committed to being our Guest Chef in December, so we are looking forward to that. When she conducted the two-part cake decorating class here, it was great. We learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Is Practice of Yoga Helpful? by Jill Mikael, Certified Instructor As a practitioner and teacher of yoga I am often asked if and how yoga is helpful. There are documented studies as well as first hand experiences that expand on the benefits of yoga. A student of mine, Debbie, who attends the chair yoga class at the Hayden Senior Center, recently related how certain yoga poses have improved her gait. Her husband, Steve, also attends the chair yoga class. At home, he has continued doing the calf stretches learned in class and is now free of “charley horses” which have plagued him his entire life. The benefits of yoga are physical, mental, and emotional in nature. I once made a list of over 100 benefits of yoga. In this article I will discuss a few of the physical benefits. Yoga improves flexibility, strength and balance. These are the first and most obvious benefits and protection against falls, arthritis and back pain. Each time you practice yoga, your joints go through a full range of motion. Blood flow increases, more oxygen gets to the cells, and cartilage gets lubricated. We call it “squeezing and soaking” areas of cartilage in order to help prevent degenerative arthritis or lessen any disability. Twisting poses are thought to wring out venous blood from internal organs and allows oxygenated blood to flow in once the twist is released. Contracting and stretching the muscles, moving organs around, while coming in and out of yoga poses, helps the lymphatic system fight off infection, destroy cancerous cells, and increases disposal of toxic waste products due to naturally occurring cellular functioning. Yoga lowers blood sugar and LDL (bad) cholesterol and boosts HDL (good) cholesterol. Lowering the blood sugar lowers the body’s cortisol and adrenaline levels, encourages weight loss, and improves sensitivity to the effects of insulin, especially important to people with diabetes. Regularly practicing yoga increases proprioception (the ability to feel what your body is doing and where it is in space) which improves balance thereby lessoning the chance of a fall and possible injury.

There is a plant based supplement, rhodiola rosea, that can naturally combat and alleviate whatever stress response (anxiety, fatigue, stress, etc) your body is under. Always check with your physician before taking supplements. No matter how poor your current level of fitness, you can start an exercise routine and become fitter and healthier at anytime. Walking at a fast pace burns almost as many calories as jogging for the same distance.

The word ‘gymnasium’ comes from the Greek word “gymnazein”, which literally means “to exercise naked.”

It is scientifically suggested that walking at a fast pace for 3 hours or more at least one time a week can reduce your risk for heart disease by up to 65%.

Just adding any type of movement into your daily routine can increase your level of overall health and wellbeing.

Strength training involves training both the muscles and the nervous system. Together, they make what is called the “neuromuscular system.” Men who workout with a female partner are shown to lift heavier weights and get better results! Wearing steel toe boots will burn more calories than normal shoes.

  

To lose one pound of fat, a person has to burn roughly 3,500 calories. When the body is at rest, it takes in about 10 litres of air per minute. There are over 640 muscles in your body.

  

Muscle is about three times more efficient at burning calories than fat, even when at rest. You should always breathe correctly when exercising. It is said that underwater swimming is the only time you should hold your breath during physical activity.

Unclinging cling wrap: Keep your roll of cling wrap in the refrigerator. It will keep it from sticking to itself, making it much easier to use. But it still will cling to whatever you put it on.

Prolonging the life of uncut lemons and limes: Lemons will stay fresh for weeks if you place them in a glass jar, filled with water and covered tightly. Limes just need to be placed in a jar, covered and kept in the refrigerator.

Preventing left-over cakes and cookies from getting stale: Place a slice of bread up against each already-cut-and exposed side of the cake. Keep the slices in place with toothpicks. The bread will probably get stale, but the cake will be moist and taste fine. A slice or two of bread in a container of cookies will soften stale cookies.

A Place for plastic bags: Plastic bags—the kind you get from the supermarket— can be stuffed into an empty tissue box and kept in your kitchen. A cube Kleenex box will hold about 15. A rectangular (160 tissue-size box) will hold about 25 plastic bags.

Unwilting Veggies: When vegetables’ cell walls lose moisture, they wilt. Rehydrate by soaking them in a big bowl of cold water and ice for about 15 minutes. They’ll be crisp again. Cutting fresh bread: The softer the bread, the more difficult it is to cut. Using a warm knife will make it much easier. Warm the knife by dipping it in just-boiled water. Dry the knife, and while it is still warm, slice the bread. Softening hard brown sugar: Put the hardened brown sugar in a microwavable dish, put a moist paper towel on top, and cover the dish with plastic wrap or a microwavable plate. Zap the sugar in the microwave for 20 seconds. If that doesn’t do the job, give it another one or two 20-second zappings to have ready-to-use brown sugar. Preventing brown sugar from hardening in the first place: When you open a new supply of brown sugar, keep two or three marshmallows in the container to prevent the sugar from hardening. When the marshmallows dry up, use the sugar or replace the marshmallows. ■

Communication Today We have witnessed massive evolution in communication methods and equipment. The changes have come and continue to come in what seems to be a blur. The era of post office and wired telephones is being replaced by the computer, internet, wireless, and fiber optics. For some it just seems too complicated and overwhelming, while for others it is exciting and they just need a little reassurance about trying something new. Years ago while holding computer classes at the Hayden Senior Center, I found that each person usually had specific goals in mind that might be very different from his/her classmates. Subsequently, I’ve worked with individuals one-on-one starting with identification of a goal or goals. If this approach appeals to you, give me a call at
