It is with great pleasure that we invite you to participate in the 14th IRPA International Congress, co-hosted by the South African Radiation Protection Societies: SARPA and SARPS, which will take place in Cape Town, South Africa from 9 to 13 May 2016 and will follow the theme: “Practising Radiation Protection - Sharing the experience and new challenges” The Congress will mark two unique milestones namely the 50 th Anniversary of the first IRPA Congress (IRPA was established in 1964 and held its first International Congress in 1966) and it will be the first IRPA International Congress to take place on the African Continent. South Africa has a long history with the use of radiation in medicine and industry. The nuclear industry is an important economic contributor in the areas of uranium mining, nuclear power generation and radioisotope production. South Africa plays an important role in African regional affairs and within the group of emerging economies within the world. These dimensions bring special meaning to the Congress theme providing a valuable opportunity to share the lessons learned in radiation protection worldwide and to discuss emerging challenges. The Congress will feature a comprehensive scientific and technical programme, the IRPA associate societies business programme and traditionally warm, vibrant and friendly African social and cultural events. We look forward to hosting you in Cape Town in 2016!

IRPA14 Congress Structure and Major Topics
The scientific programme of the Congress will address three broad thematic areas of the radiation protection system: Fundamental Science, Philosophy and Principles, Practice and it will be structured in a series of keynote plenary presentation sessions, parallel topical sessions, poster sessions, key issue discussion sessions and plenary summaries. The programme structure will enable delegates to gain an overview of radiation protection science, philosophy and practice; to engage in detailed discussion and debate around key issues in their particular area of interest and to hear summaries of all the deliberations. Particular consideration will be given to distilling the key messages from poster presentations and featuring them in the discussion of key issues and the presentation of conclusions. A comprehensive record will be made of all the Congress proceedings and published on the IRPA website. In addition, presenters will be provided with the option to offer written papers for peer reviewed publication. The programme will include a series of accredited refresher training courses to be presented in early morning sessions. The Congress will feature a technical exhibition which will enable commercial organisations to display and promote their products and services. With 11 200m² of dedicated, column-free space, the Cape Town International Convention Centre provides the perfect venue for this exhibition.

The Social Programme
An extensive social programme will take place providing delegates with an experience of traditional African hospitality. An Accompanying Person’s programme will be provided together with the opportunity for pre- and post- congress tours.

Last, but not least, take the trip to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was formerly incarcerated. The fiftieth anniversary of international collaboration amongst radiation protection professionals worldwide, under the IRPA banner, will be celebrated with a session dedicated to the achievements and milestones that have marked this period. The session will take place prior to the IRPA General Assembly and will provide a unique insight into the role and influence of professional societies and IRPA in the evolving world of radiation safety.
The IRPA Business Programme
The IRPA business programme will commence on Sunday 8 May 2016, with the Associate Societies Forum. The forum will provide an opportunity for Associate Societies and Society Members to present and discuss issues related to the profession of radiation protection and professional societies. The various IRPA committees and working groups will meet throughout the week. The celebration of the 50 th anniversary of IRPA and the General Assembly will take place midwaythrough the Congress on Wednesday.

Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa, and the historic buildings of the Houses of Parliament are situated in the Cape Town city centre. Situated at the foot of Table Mountain, the Cape Town Central Business District is a relatively small area, which allows for easy exploration on foot. Numerous excellent hotels, loft apartments, trendy restaurants and bars can be found in the heart of the city and along the coast.
