University of Colorado Denver students restore Bluff Lake Nature Center First-year UC Denver students volunteer time working to improve the nature center DENVER (Sept. 16, 2010) – The University of Colorado Denver Experiential Learning Center, the Office of Undergraduate Experience, and UC Denver Student Life are tapping the volunteer spirit of first-year students as they engage in their community while at the same time restoring the Bluff Lake Nature Center. WHAT:

Approximately 30 UC Denver First-Year Seminar students will spend the morning learning how Bluff Lake Nature Center was developed and touring the area. The students will then work on landscaping, weeding, watering and planting shrubs and plants. This service project will assist the staff and volunteers who maintain the 123-acre urban wildlife refuge, while teaching the students the value of volunteering.

University of Colorado Denver students host campus-wide event to benefit local charities Students work on various service projects to benefit those in need DENVER (Oct. 1, 2010) – Students for Community Engagement, a triinstitutional student organization on the Auraria Campus affiliated with the University of Colorado Denver Experiential Learning Center and UC Denver Student Life, is conducting an all-campus service event to engage Auraria Campus students in serving those in need, creating a culture of service on campus. WHAT:

Several different service projects will take place simultaneously: creating fleece baby blankets for Project Linus who will distribute them to The Children’s Hospital; knitting hats for the African Community Center which provides educational and social services to African refugees in Denver; decorating paper bags for carrying food for Project Angel Heart which provides meals to people with life-threatening illnesses; and decorating and potting little plants to give to the residents at Bessie’s Hope which is a program that enhances the quality of life for nursing home/assisted living elders. Supplies will be provided for all participants.

Keeping younger vote strong this election University of Colorado Denver students hit polls to attract young voters DENVER (Oct. 20, 2010) – Election officials hope to see continued involvement from younger voters in the upcoming November election. The 2008 election showed the first majority turnout in US voters ages 19-29 since 1971, according to the nonpartisan Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement. The Election Fellows Program is working to continue youth participation in the elections process through a comprehensive curriculum and hands-on experience that brings young people to work the polls on Election Day—experiencing the power of democracy in action. Eight of the 21 Fellows involved with the Colorado Campus Compact organization are students at the University of Colorado Denver—the largest number of students from any of the schools involved. The Fellows are also working to recruit student poll workers and have currently recruited 315 students to be poll workers across the state of which 96 are UC Denver students. WHAT: state and

The Election Fellows will be meeting with the Secretary of State and his staff to discuss topics such as how the state acts as a bridge between federal law and local policy and the role of the the Secretary of State in the elections process.
