www.uysc.vic.edu.au uysc.vic.edu.au www.uysc.vic.edu.au From the Principal's Desk Almost the End of Term! With only two weeks left in the term and the exams looming for our senior students it is amazing to see all we have been able to achieve this year and at the same time wonder where has the time gone? We recently completed our four year school review which will determine the direction of our school for the next four years. This will be made public once it is finalised and accepted by both the Department of Education and UYSC School Council. It has been almost two years since I joined Upper Yarra Secondary College and participating in the review was a very rewarding experience that takes into account the views of parents, staff and importantly students. It has been a great opportunity to reflect on how far we have come and celebrate the successes and strengths of the College. We also cast a critical eye over areas that have further room for improvement and we will endeavour to relentlessly strive for excellence.

Our Vision It is also a timely reminder that Upper Yarra Secondary College’s vision statement is “...to provide high quality education for the students of the Yarra Valley”. As a result of our current Annual Implementation Plan, we achieve this through a focus on literacy, numeracy, high expectations, future pathways and extra-curricular experiences.

Attendance Matters As many of us will be aware the cold and flu season appears to have hit hard this year. In line with our school goals we have also established school values of Respect, Responsibility, Excellence and Resilience. It is a timely opportunity to practise the skills of resilience and continue to attend school despite not feeling 100%! Have a safe break, enjoy the spring, and we look forward to seeing you for the final term of the 2017 school year. Scott Tully | Principal

Student Vs Staff Ultimate Frisbee An ice cold breeze never deterred the friendly rivalry between staff and students as they fought for a win on Battle of the Frisbee. With height on their side and the crowd behind them, the students were flying high, taking screamers over their older yet wiser opponents. Not to be out done and with drama on his side Mr Blattman went for the horizontal grab (straight into the mud). Mr Tully showed caution with a consistent two-hand grab and stayed strong, keeping his feet. And the students were relentless maintaining a pressure and strength of character second to none. Congratulations to all who participated and we look forward to a rematch in the not too distant future. Tracey Smedley | Senior School Assistant

The images shown, depict weekly tasks and exercises that the students were required to complete. Some of these tasks involved students to focus on particular words and create an image using only one word given such as ice, shelf and heart. They made a photo collage known as Exquisite Corpse where they were to take four or more images and collage them together creating a unique photo.

Victorian Wild Water and Slalom Junior Championships 2017 Last weekend three UYSC students joined students from across the Yarra Valley to represent their schools at the Victorian Wild Water and Canoe Slalom Junior Championships in Warrandyte . The event brought together over 80 competitors from all over the state, with Yarra Valley schools taking out medals in almost every class, and Yarra Junction Primary winning the trophy for Best Victorian Primary School. On Saturday, students competed in a downriver race, where they had to tackle 6 rapids along a 3.1km course and on Sunday they completed a Canoe Slalom course, where students maneuvered their way around a series of 17 gates (similar to an Olympic course). They competed in different classes in both competitions K1,C1 and C2.

CHEFS OF THE WEEK 4

Falls Creek Ski Camp 2017 On the 14th to the 17th of August, seventeen kids and three teachers went to Falls Creek Ski Camp. It was an awesome experience, and definitely worth the long six hour drive. Once we got to Howmans Gap Alpine Centre, we went into the foyer and the head of the camp talked to us about all the rules and expectations. Once that was done we unpacked our bags and went up the hill to get our ski and boarding gear fitted and our ski lift passes ready for the next day. We returned to the cabins ready for dinner and went to the games room and all had a go at a game called Pong - except for Mr Cliff who took a break because he was “no good” and he had to “play Clash Of Clans”!

The next day we headed up to the lifts and found out that they were closed because of the 90km winds. It took 6 hours for the lifts to open and for the winds to settle. At 2 o’clock, when the lifts opened our group was the first to head up on the lifts, but because of the strong winds some of us were very scared while others were laughing at the ones that were scared. When we got up to the top of the mountain, it was so pretty because of the view and all of the fresh snow that had fallen overnight. After the day had almost finished, two kids in front of Jye and Amy fell off one of the lifts and and the medical people had to come and help them.

On the last day we headed up the lifts for one last ski and snowboard. It was an eight hour day but an awesome day. After At 6:45am we all woke up and got ready lunch Jack had a stack and blacked out. An for the big cold day ahead of us. When instructor woke him up and Mr Cliff had to it was time for brekky we all met in the take him to the medical centre to get him Foyer to eat. Once all of that was done we took the main lift up the mountain. Mr properly checked out and so that ended Cliff took the snowboarders and Max took the day for them. After that, Max was coming down one of the slopes and fell in the skiers; some of us were rookies and some well experienced. We all set off and a hole landing face first. His goggles went at 12 midday and some of us had lessons. into his glasses and smashed his glasses and the glass cut open his nose but he All the instructors were really nice and didn't want to pay the expensive medical very good at what they did! bill, so Max being Max , he put two bandMr Cliff said to us he didn't need lessons aids on his nose to fix it. Despite these because he was “too good” but then he two accidents, we all ended up having an ended up getting lost and having to get unforgettable time and I am sure no one the ski patrol to come and get him and will ever forget how much fun the camp three other students (Sally, Mason and was! Brandon) they all say it was Mr Cliff's After a long four days we headed back fault but he will never admit that! After to school arriving at 11pm where our about two hours Mr Cliff and the others parents were all waiting for us. Everyone finally got back and we all got in the bus and went back to the camp. When we got missed their families very much but on back we had our dinner and played more this camp we kind of made our second games. We all had a huge day and quite family so it was definitely worth it! an exhausting day, we all slept well that Dayne Leeds 8A , Alanah Verkes 8D night!
