We commissioned artist David Bixter to create a series of case studies based on the people he would nominate for the competition.
With each entry, you can also send some writing, a picture, a photograph, a video, a sound recording, a sculpture or even a found object.
Your Name Here competition provides the opportunity to nominate someone to be commemorated permanently by having a park named after them. In addition to the reasons for selection given on the entry form, each submission may be accompanied by a portrait, biography or story about the person you have nominated.
Case Study 1
Brenda Bixter - Portrait of the Artist's Mother Using James Whistler’s famous portrait of his mother as inspiration, I have created a portrait of my own mother combining different elements which remind me of her.
The painting on the wall has been replaced by a family photograph.
My Mum loves William Morris’s designs so I added one of them to the curtain in the background.
My Mum appears in the portrait dressed as the Woman in Black a character from her favourite play.
My Mum and I both play the piano and music has always been central in both our lives. Having a piano in the picture also gives her something to do... I’ve always thought that Whistler’s Mum looks a little bored!
Case Study 2
Penny Knight - A Portrait in Sound This portrait was created using the sounds that accompany preparations for a family dinner with my in-laws. As well as being an excellent cook, my mother-in-law is a keen cyclist so cooking sounds and noise from her bike feature prominently in the audio piece.
Other sounds included are the voices of grandchildren, the barking of her puppy, Rosie, and the underlying rhythm of a drum called a “Cajon”, played by Penny’s husband Simon. The track captures the hustle and bustle of the household as the meal is prepared.

Case Study 3
James Tyrrell - Text-based Portrait James Tyrrell is the founder of “Laughter Africa”, a charity dedicated to helping street children. He is currently in Sierra Leone where his charity works with street children to fulfil their aspirations and help them bring about positive change in their lives.
For this submission, a collection of descriptive words associated with James and his charity have been arranged within an outline of Africa.
James is a long-time family friend who I have selected for his inspirational dedication and courage.
The Laughter Africa logo is included alongside the descriptive words in the artwork.
The colours for the artwork were selected from the Laughter Africa logo.

Your Name Here is a Heart of Glass commission by artist Joshua Sofaer, who devised the concept for the competition. Anyone from anywhere in the world can enter but we would like to receive nominations that have a connection to St. Helens. After the competition closes on 26th June 2015, a panel of judges will choose a winner from the names and reasons submitted. The newly named park will be officially revealed in late Summer 2015. It will remain permanently in place for all to see, becoming part of the fabric of the town and its maps.
