PETER BLAKE Targets Born in 1932, Peter Blake has been a pioneering force within the movement of British Pop art since the 1950’s. Emerging at a time when Britain was still recovering from the War, Blake was one of a generation of artists looking optimistically to a future that would be defined by huge advancements in technology and a booming consumer economy. As a Pop artist, Blake’s interests lie in flattening the distinction between high art and kitsch. Early paintings were populated by depictions of himself and his friends surrounded by pop music, merchandise, comic books and life style magazines. Later works adopt a more graphic, advertising style and take as their subjects celebrities, wrestlers and, most famously, The Beatles, whom he met through his dealer Robert Fraser. This introduction led to Blake’s most iconic work, the artwork for the album cover for The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a meticulous collage work made in collaboration with his then wife Jan Haworth. The collage features 57 photographs and 9 waxworks of an array of icons of the 20 th Century, with the four band members themselves at the centre.
Now 87, Peter Blake remains prolific, working across a broad range of mediums including painting, drawing, collage, and print, utilising vast sources of historical and contemporary imagery. In 2016, Rainbow Target was released in an edition of 100. Inspired by Blake’s iconic painting, Babe Rainbow, 1968, the edition is made from vacuum formed plastic, rendered in relief in a gloss finish is signed and numbered by the artist. Fourteen further Targets were released in 2017, in editions of just 15. These striking editions come in either monochrome or twocolour editions, rendered in relief with either a metal flake or gloss finish. Each is limited to an edition of 15 and in many cases there are just one or two left in the edition. We are delighted to have the opportunity to be presenting this series of Targets alongside a selection of other Peter Blake diamond dust silkscreen and digital editions, depicting 20th century icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley.
