Helping Moms Get Ready for the School Year

Non-Surgical Makeover Submitted by Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness

I

t’s that time of year—Back to School! The Mom Shuttle will soon rev its engine and begins its rounds—school, practices, recitals, doctor appointments, anything and everything kid related. While your child is trying on school clothes, do you study yourself in the department store mirror, reminiscing about how you looked pre-kid(s)? “My back side was a little more firm. My cheeks were a little higher. My face looked a lot more youthful!” That sounds like a laundry list of surgery, money, and downtime, right?! With a Non-Surgical Mommy Makeover, you can actually tighten, tone, trim, and improve your body and skin without the risks, pain, and cost of surgery. As a mom, your greatest pride and joy are your children but let’s face it, childbirth changed your body and left you with a belly pooch. Try as you might, the belly pooch is often resistant to diet and exercise. It’s a special kind of fat—stubborn fat! Many women battle this stubborn fat: back fat, muffin tops and even sagging arm bulge. Until recently the only solution was liposuction; an evasive procedure that requires going under the knife. However, busy Moms don’t always have the luxury of time to deal with necessary post-procedure recovery. With CoolSculpting, Moms everywhere are super COOL (or super HOT)! CoolSculpting, an FDA-cleared procedure, actually freezes stubborn fat. On average the treatment is one-hour and it’s performed in a medical office, not a hospital or surgical center. With CoolSculpting, there isn’t any downtime or needles, just an applicator that is applied to the treatment area. The applicator contains two cooling panels that literally freeze the fat, killing those cells, which are then eliminated from the body. The procedure will change the way you look and feel in your clothes!!! Every mom finds themselves furrowing their brows at kids when they don’t clean up after themselves! Every time you make that scowling face, you actually make those lines & wrinkles deeper. Yikes! And while everyone needs to know when mom “means business”, you can do without the deep lines or wrinkles. Botox & Fillers to the rescue! Make these marvelous procedures your BFFs. When done in a medical office, under the care of an artistic, precise Physician, Botox safely and quite easily helps to relax lines and wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyes and around the eyes. Dermal Fillers on the other hand are used to add volume to folds around the mouth (nasal labial folds) or enhance lost volume in the cheeks and

lips. When these procedures are combined, which is referred to as a “Liquid Facelift”, they actually mimic the enhancements of a face lift—decreased lines & wrinkles, firmer skin, refreshed appearance, in a natural, subtle way. Any mom knows that time spent cheering on the sunny sidelines of sporting events or grabbing meals on the go can take its toll on the overall texture, tone, and vitality of your skin. When time is limited, “fine tuning” goes out the door—that includes shaving, proper skin care, and relaxation. When time is of the essence, Laser Hair Removal is a great option for those tenacious hairs or hard-to-reach areas. After four to six treatments, you can be confident going out for the night in a cocktail dress, without the prep time of shaving or waxing. Popular treatment areas include underarms, chin, and bikini—which can be treated in less than 45 minutes! Other than mild redness that typically resolves in a few hours, there isn’t any downtime. To enhance the skin you’ve ignored for years, choose from Chemical Peels or Laser Skin Rejuvenation. These procedures decrease hyper pigmentation and scarring while actually refining texture. Dull, lackluster skin will be fresh and vibrant! In combination with a skin care regimen, consisting of medical-grade products, you will see remarkable results! While looking good enhances any woman’s confidence, feeling good is equally as important! Give yourself time to relax and truly unwind. A Facial or Massage is an amazing way to relieve tension and restore balance amidst the chaos of daily life. For the loving mom you are, this is the perfect way to love yourself!! So as you check off all the necessary supplies for the kiddos, also create your own Mommy Makeover checklist:  Schedule Cool Sculpting for the mommy pooch  Choose a “Liquid Facelift” with Botox and Dermal Fillers for the “frustrated Mom lines”  Ask about Chemical Peels and Laser Skin Rejuvenation to help to lighten and brighten dull, tired “mom” skin  Schedule a Facial or Massage for much needed rest and relaxation Mom, you deserve an A+!!! To learn more about the treatments described above, contact Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness Center at 618-288-9117 or OohLaLaWellness.com. Complimentary consultations are available.

Get Active, Get Healthy! Submitted by Humana

R

egular exercise is important to the physical and mental health of everyone, and becomes increasingly essential as we age. Physical fitness not only produces long-term health benefits but also boosts energy levels, improves mood, and increases confidence. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends adults 65 and older get at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderateintense aerobic activity (i.e., brisk walking) and muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days per week1. While that may seem like a lot, it only amounts to 20 to 30 minutes each day and even can be broken down into three 10-minute sessions. Although many adults in the 50 plus age bracket may think it’s too late to be physically active, it’s important to realize that you can benPage 6 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — September 2012

efit from even small bouts of movement, said Mark Kiffer, DO, MBA, Medical Officer for Senior Products for Humana’s West Coast Region. “It can be surprisingly easy to sneak a little bit of extra activity into our lives each day, whether we’re walking the dog, doing yard work, cleaning the house, or even parking in a spot that’s a little further from the store,” he said. Now, you can take those positive habits and push yourself to do more. Go dancing, opt for the stairs instead of the elevator, take a swim, or walk a few laps around the mall. Reaping the rewards of physical activity doesn’t necessarily require strenuous workouts or spending hours at the gym. It’s about adding more movement and activity to your life, even in small ways.

If you need motivation, find an exercise buddy or join a class at your local fitness center. An “exercise buddy” not only can make activity more fun, it can also double your willpower. Dr. Kiffer said it’s beneficial to check with your health insurance provider to see if they offer discounts or free classes in your area. For example, health benefits company Humana teams up with Healthways SilverSneakers® to provide Humana Medicare Advantage members with free memberships at participating fitness centers. This partnership allows members to use workout equipment, take fitness classes such as Zumba and yoga, attend health educational seminars, and join fun social events. By participating in scheduled exercise classes or even joining a neighborhood walking group, you’ll have the chance to socialize with others on a more frequent basis and get in the groove with scheduled physical activities. In addition to the physical benefits, Dr. Kiffer said exercise can have many psychological and emotional benefits as well. “Regular physical activity is a great way to reduce anxiety and take your mind off of whatever you may be nervous about—whether it’s your health, bank account or a strenuous relationship—because exercise produces endorphins that help to improve your mood and reduce depression,” he said. You’ll be surprised what a great distraction an activity can be and how it will boost your self confidence, too! Worried about memory loss? Exercise also helps to keep your brain active, which can prevent loss of memory and cognitive decline while also slowing the progression of brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease2. With 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s and nearly half of people aged 85 and older battling the disease, it’s important for everyone—regardless of their age—to be proactive and participate in physical activity3. Dr. Kiffer said exercise produces “neurotropic

peptides,” which act as joy juice for the brain, boosting new connections and even new brain cells. Above all, be safe and keep well hydrated. Be sure to have fun and stay motivated when choosing an activity. If you do something you enjoy, scheduling time for exercise won’t seem like a chore. While it’s easy to get discouraged about aches and pains, remember that the effort is worth the benefits you’ll see—and feel—in your life. atching aging parents decline physically and/or mentally can be one of the hardest things an adult child will ever experience. We are simply not prepared to see our role models, once so vital and strong, deteriorate before our eyes. Realizing that your parents may need more help is not always easy. They are often unwilling to talk to us about the difficulties they are experiencing, clinging to their independence as long as possible, even when it is not in their best interest. While there are no set rules, the two most obvious signs that a parent may need somePage 8 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — September 2012

thing more are the condition of their home and the condition of their health and well being. Is their home as clean as it has always been? Is there plenty of food and, if so, is it fresh or has it begun to spoil? Has Mom or Dad begun to lose weight or appear to be neglecting their personal hygiene? Are they becoming forgetful and being remiss in paying bills or take their medication? If so, it is time to have one of the most difficult conversations you will ever have—talking to your parents about a move to an Assisted Living community. It is very important

to do this as early as possible and before something happens. Nobody wants to face this monumental decision when they are in crises mode. Many seniors are reluctant to admit they need help, and adult children are often faced with angry and frustrated parents when first introducing the idea of Assisted Living. It is important to be compassionate and try to understand what your parents are feeling. More often than not they view this move as giving up their independence. They are often frightened of the unknown and worried about becoming a burden to their families, or worse, being completely forgotten. Your approach to this topic can play a pivotal role in helping your parents to make a good decision while maintaining the balance of the parent/child relationship. Your parents do not need to be reminded of their advancing years or declining health. They already know. Instead, focus on the many benefits of an Assisted Living community and how this move can greatly enhance the quality of their lives as well as your peace of mind. Assisted Living communities provide access to medical attention that they may need and qualified professionals are on hand around the clock in the event of an emergency. Residents also get help with everyday chores such as cooking, housekeeping, and laundry, freeing up their time for more socializing and activities. Transportation is provided for those who no longer drive, and on-site salons, libraries, and wellness centers add to the many benefits. Opportunities are plentiful for building new friendships and interests, while still enjoying the old standards of cards, crafts, group trips, musical entertainment, and, of course, Bingo. Your

“Above all, treat your parents with the dignity and respect they deserve.” loved one will not be isolated and alone in their home anymore, and gone will be those solitary meals and long days with nobody to talk to and nothing to do but watch TV. Above all, treat your parents with the dignity and respect they deserve. You may need to have this conversation more than once, and possibly many times. Be patient and listen to what they express about their fears, and be there to support them throughout the process. Take the time to tour the communities with your parents, ask a lot of questions of the experts and encourage your parents to do the same, thoroughly discuss and make this decision as a family. After all, the most important thing is to ensure that your parents find the right new home, one where they will be loved, inspired, and encouraged to thrive as they begin this new chapter of their lives. VNA-TIP HealthCare:

Reducing Hospital Readmission Rates Submitted by VNA-TIP Healthcare

Responding to a patient’s telemonitoring results, VNA-TIP HealthCare’s Coordinator discusses a new plan of care with the physician.

P

atient outcomes and hospital readmission rates garner great concern across the healthcare industry. Nationally, one in five Medicare patients is readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge, which costs approximately $17 billion per year according to a 2009 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In hopes to improve both patient care and cost control, The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) leads a national health care quality improvement program directed at reducing preventable hospital readmissions. Currently the program focuses on reducing avoidable re-hospitalizations of patients with three health conditions: AMI (Anterior Myocardial Infarction or Heart Attack), Pneumonia, and CHF (Congestive Heart Failure). Soon, hospitals that report a higher than average amount of patients returning within a 30-day time period, will begin to incur MediPage 12 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — September 2012

care financial penalties. With the regulation’s threat to reimbursement, healthcare providers must quickly assess how to reduce hospital readmissions. Hospitals aren’t the only facet of the healthcare industry impacted either. Accountable care organizations, physicians, nursing homes, skilled facilities, and home health agencies are analyzing strategies to reduce hospital readmissions. As a home healthcare agency, VNA-TIP HealthCare has responded to the challenge by assessing patients and identifying those considered high-risk for readmission to the hospital. If the patient is benchmarked as high-risk, several interventions are immediately implemented. VNATIP HealthCare provides home care, hospice, and private duty services to patients in their home environment and implements several critical programs to ensure patients can stay where they want—out of the hospital and in their homes.

VNA-TIP HealthCare identified four main areas where intervention could lead to a reduction of re-hospitalizations: enhanced transitional care from hospital to home, increased patient education and self-care support, multidisciplinary team coordination and patientcentered plan of care for end-of-life. VNA-TIP HealthCare acknowledges each of the main points with programs and materials in an effort to minimize instances which may have typically sent patients to the hospital. Some of the initiatives that VNA-TIP executes, resulting in reductions of hospitalizations and re-hospitalizations, are listed below. Transition From Hospital To Home Transition is a major risk necessitating intervention. VNA-TIP HealthCare manages this risk through its commitment in assisting the patient, caregivers, and physicians in achieving a smooth transition from acute care to home care by utilizing the following programs: • T elemonitoring: VNA-TIP HealthCare utilizes telemonitoring to carefully monitor high-risk patients that are likely to return to the hospital. This technology communicates vital information directly from the patient’s home to VNA-TIP staff. The patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight, and Oxygen saturation rates are monitored every day. If any of the information is outside of the physician-established parameters, the agency notifies the patient and informs the physician. Should the physician feel immediate follow-up is necessary, a nursing visit will be completed to assess the patient in their home that same day. Telemonitoring enables clinicians to make timely informative care decisions and intervene when necessary to prevent hospiTIP Hospice Social Worker spends time with a nursing home resident to evaluate talizations or emergency room visits. her current health needs and educates her on hospice options. • ZOE Monitoring: The ZOE device measures fluid status via thoracic electrical bioimpedance, which is a change in resistance due to fluid changes. VNA-TIP HealthCare’s Nurse works with a facility’s Medical Assistant to coordinate the transition of care for a patient. Education & Self-Care Support By improving communication and understanding between healthcare providers and patients, barriers leading to confusion and noncompliance can be overcome. VNA-TIP HealthCare utilizes multiple resources for education, so patients and caregivers develop a better understanding of the disease, diet, medication, and community support resources. The goal to educate the patient and caregiver to achieve independence in their health care is achieved by employing the following programs: • Disease Management: VNA-TIP HealthCare educates all patients on their disease process, signs, and symptoms to report, risk factors, pathophysiology, and treatment plans. CHF, MI, Pneumonia, and Diabetes can be potentially problematic for patients to manage alone, so VNA-TIP HealthCare provides disease specific materials and programs to educate patients and families. VNA-TIP’s disease specific “Zones for Management” help patients and caregivers differentiate between common symptoms, warning signs and true health emergencies. Independence in diet, knowledge of disease process, and when to report changes are all vital to maintaining the patient at home. • Diet: VNA-TIP is the only home care agency in the greater St. Louis area that has partnered with Abbott Nutrition services. A complete nutrition risk assessment is performed at the start of care and if the patient is at risk, they are put on the supplement program under physician orders. These patients are typically wound patients, patients with lean body mass deficits or weight loss, oncology patients or any patient that would benefit from the program. • Continued Self-Care Support: VNA-TIP HealthCare’s staff is available around the clock. Whenever a patient has a question or is concerned about a medication or symptom, a trained staff member is accessible to provide guidance and clarification. This prevents a potentially avoidable admission when care concerns or emergencies arise. Patients are encouraged to be active in their own health care and VNA-TIP HealthCare provides the professional support necessary for that to be possible. By providing constant on-call coverage, VNA-TIP HealthCare not only improves patient care, but also patient satisfaction. Multidisciplinary Team Coordination Health care coordination and communication are vital to patient success, especially when multiple providers are involved. VNA-TIP HealthCare facilitates coordination and communication through the following initiatives: Page 14 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — September 2012

• Follow Up: VNA-TIP HealthCare assists in physician follow-up. Staff will prompt patients to make an appointment with their primary care physician post-hospitalization or aid them in locating one based on the list of available physicians supplied by the patient’s hospital. VNATIP HealthCare is instrumental in assisting the patient to follow-up with their physician appointments post-hospital so that care is provided to achieve the best outcomes for the patient and prevent rehospitalization. • Front Loading Home Health Visits: When a patient is assessed to be at high-risk for hospitalization, visits are front-loaded. This means the patient will be seen more frequently the first few weeks of care until stabilized. VNA-TIP HealthCare staff schedules visits accordingly, ensuring that patients receive assistance when needed most. The first three weeks of home care are critical for re-hospitalizations. VNA-TIP manages this high-risk transition period by providing handson care until the patient’s health is stable. • Coordinated Communication: VNA-TIP HealthCare focuses on building relationships to enhance communication between the patient, the physician, the hospital and community resources in order to minimize readmission to the hospital. Plan Of Care For End-Of-Life Patients with serious health conditions or complex illnesses often frequent hospitals with prolonged stays. These patients show little or no progress or have an overall poor prognosis and may need clarified health goals. VNA-TIP HealthCare is available to lead the end-of-life care plan discussion when necessary. •C larify Health Goals: Chronically ill patients tend to visit emergency rooms for symptom relief and life saving measures. If a patient continually needs hospital intervention, yet does not progress, the health goals of that patient may need to be discussed. A care plan can be created that aligns with health goals determined by the patient and family. If a treatment does not fit the patient’s health goals, it is not initiated or is postponed. VNA-TIP HealthCare is also available to lead discussions for an end-of-life plan. Hospice care is designed for patients with a life-limiting illness of six months or less, whose chronic illness treatment has been exhausted. Preventing Elder Abuse Submitted by Senior Services Plus

I

t is known by many names: “elder mistreatment”, “senior abuse”, or “abuse of older adults.” It can happen in a single act, can be a repeated act, or even a lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust. These acts or lack of action cause harm or distress to the older adult. The main element to the harm of elder abuse is the “expectation of trust” of the older person towards their abuser. Abuse can come from many people: friend, family, neighbor, or someone that the older person relies on for services. In 2002, the World Health Organization brought attention to the issue of elder abuse, and over the past few years many government agencies and community professional groups have specified elder abuse as a social problem. If you know of elder abuse, you can contact different agencies in the area such as Area Agency on Aging or local authorities. What is Elder Abuse? Abuse can come in many forms. Physical abuse can be hitting, slapping, confinement, or giving excessive or improper medication. Emotional abuse can be swearing at or humiliating a person. A common theme in emotional abuse is when the abuser uses something that matters to an older person and they use it to coerce them into a particular action. Financial abuse also known as financial exploitation, which is illegal or unauthorized use of a person’s property, money, pension, or even using coercion to change the older person’s will to name the abuser as their heir. Older adults are also victims of scams by strangers, sexual abuse, and neglect. Some U.S. state laws also recognize elder abuse. This includes denying the civil and constitutional rights of a person who is old or who has been declared by court to be mentally incapacitated, or by abandonment, which is deserting a dependent person at an unattended place for a period of time. Sign of abuse can include saying he or she is being abused, seeming depressed or withdrawn, seems afraid to make their own decisions, seems to be hiding something, putting off of medical appointments, or trying to leave their place of residence. Elder Abuse caries many health consequences for the individual being abused, that can be life threatening. People who have suffered from elder abuse may experience declining functional abilities, increased dependency, increased sense of helplessness, increased stress, psychological decline, morbidity, depression, malnutrition, and dementia. Individuals who suffer from conditions such as memory problems, physical disabilities, depression or loneliness, and substance abuse are at a greater risk for elder abuse. It is hard for researchers to obtain accurate statistics on elder abuse, because it is largely a hidden problem and tends to be committed in the privacy of the elderly person’s home, and mostly by their family members. Victims are often unwilling to report their abuse for fear of others’ disbelief, fear of losing independence, or fear of losing social support.

Prevention Doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals play a vital role in assisting elder abuse victims. But not all cases are reported because individuals are not aware of state laws on elder abuse. Locally there is the Area Agency on Aging, and nationally there is the National Center on Elder Abuse, National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, and The Center for Elders and the Courts. You can also contact you local service provider for older adults for resources on elder abuse. For more information, contact Senior Services Plus at 618-465-3298.

lifestyle change

Healthy Lifestyle Changes = Weight Loss Submitted by Med+Plus

I

magine your ideal self! Would you weigh less? Have more energy? lnstead of trying another fad diet that is not right for you or that can cause rebound weight gain, get long lasting results with a medically supervised weight loss program. Medical weight loss programs take your physical and medical history into consideration when developing the plan that will help you lose those unwanted pounds and inches. Your medical history will be reviewed by a physician, and the information gained from your history and consultation is used to determine whether or not you need further testing to choose the best weight loss plan. The plan could include medically prescribed injections, FDAapproved appetite suppressants, and/or vitamin injections. A very important aspect of any weight loss program is what you are consuming. Nutritional counseling will help you create a true lifestyle change and put an end to the yo-yo dieting of the past. A nutrition counselor will guide you along the road to success, with freedom from guilt and denial, by providing a sustainable plan to help you lose the weight and keep it off for good. It is vital to maintain a very positive approach to weight loss and total wellness. Having healthy habits also includes a healthy mental attitude! Here are some health tips to start today: • Drink Enough Water: Good hydration is the foundation of good health. The body is, on average, 60% water, and every system in your body depends on water. Stay hydrated.

Page 16 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — September 2012

•E at More Leafy Greens: Leafy greens are the foods most missing in modern diets. They are nutrient dense and are one of the richest sources of vitamins and fiber. • I nclude Quality Protein Daily: Protein provides the structural core of the body. It helps stabilize blood sugar, promotes cell growth and repair, assists in hormone production, cell metabolism, fluid balance, and immune system maintenance. •E at Whole Grains Instead of Processed Foods: Whole grains such as brown rice, buckwheat, quinoa, and oats are an excellent source of nutrition. Because the body absorbs slowly, they provide sustained and high-quality energy. • Use Healthy Oils: Olive oil has the highest percentage of hearthealthy monounsaturated fat of any edible oil, and contains a high level of anti-oxidants. Other examples of healthy oils are coconut, walnut, and flax seed oil, as well as raw nuts and seeds, avocado, olives, and organic butter. • Move Your Body: Movement aids many of our body’s natural functions, such as digestion and circulation and can boost the immune system, strengthen muscles, and improve heart and lung function. • Manage Your Stress: Negative stress impacts our health in many ways, including weakening the body’s overall immunity. Find ways to calm an overactive mind and body that work for you and your lifestyle. Put an end to your ineffective dieting and begin your lifestyle change today. cosmetic surgery

Mommy Makeover: Q&A with Dr. Ryan Diederich Submitted by MidAmerica Plastic Surgery What is a “Mommy Makeover”? A “Mommy Makeover” is actually a combination of procedures to erase or minimize the impact of pregnancy on the body. These include but are not limited to: • Breast Lift • Breast Augmentation • Tummy Tuck • Liposuction Common complaints after childbirth Complaints about body changes can include: • B reast: Deflation or sag (also known as ptosis), loss of fullness, and difficulty with clothing • A bdomen: Extra skin, “muffin top”, stretch marks, bulge in the middle • G eneralized areas: The arms & legs with poor shape, extra adiposity (i.e. saddle bags). Why can’t I just work out? The problem with working out is that no amount of exercise can improve these areas and in fact, can actually make them worse. For example, in the breast, there may be more deflation & ptosis (sag), and in the abdomen, the excess skin bulge can become more prominent. Everyone has those problem areas that just won’t go away. Breast For the treatment of the breast, it depends on the needs of the mother. A typical procedure is a breast lift to improve the sag and shape of the breast with or without an augmentation to return some of the fullness or to have a desired size change. Abdomen There are several varieties of abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck). A mini tummy tuck is for woman who really only have concern for a small area of skin laxity and stretch marks (stria) below the belly button (umbilicus). More common is a full abdominoplasty. This addresses the key changes of the abdomen from pregnancy. This allows the greatest improvement in the skin of the abdomen while at the same time tightening the “six pack” muscles in the midline to prevent a bulge in this area.

What is the recovery? Recovery time is less than most people expect. Depending on the procedure, recovery can vary. Most patients return to many of the day-to-day activities in one to two weeks and are doing 95 percent of their normal life routines by six weeks. It’s important to know that the results continue to change and improve and final results can even take up to one to two years to fully appreciate. Should I do multiple procedures at once? The advantage of doing multiple procedures at once is the costs are lower and there is a single recovery time. The ability to complete all of the desired changes at once can depend on a patient’s needs. We try and limit the overall procedure length so occasionally we recommend staged procedures for patient safety or to improve the outcome. What about scars? This is a common question asked by patients. To provide the degree of change our patients are looking for, scars are necessary. We always make every effort to limit or hide scars through small incisions in procedures such as body contouring, in anatomically hidden areas such as breast augmentation, and in easily concealable locations such as a planned bikini line with a tummy tuck.

Body Contouring This is traditionally completed through the liposuction of areas such as the arms, legs (saddle bag areas), or trunk to reach those “hard to lose” areas and to regain or improve pre-pregnancy shape.

What makes a good candidate? I recommend waiting at least six months to one year after the last child. The mother should have specific post-baby body goals in mind. It is also a good idea to have a stable diet and weight.

How long do the actual procedures take? It really depends on the type of procedures and the patient. Each treatment plan is personalized to the patient’s needs and time can vary greatly from one to six plus hours.

You don’t have to cross the river for cutting edge. Find your state-of-the-art cosmetic surgery right here at MidAmerica Plastic Surgery. Call for a consultation at 618-288-7855 or visit online at www.MidAmericaPlasticSurgery.com.

D

o you hide your smile because of crooked teeth, crowding, or a space between your front teeth? Perhaps you have an overbite, underbite, or crossbite? These dental issues can often make you feel embarrassed or self-conscious and interfere with social activities. Jaw misalignment can also cause TMJ symptoms such as headaches, tooth sensitivity, jaw pain, and a host of other symptoms. Invisible braces such as Invisalign™ are the solution for all of these issues, and can correct a diastema (gap), crowding, and jaw misalignment all at the same time. The Invisalign system can help you achieve stunning results through your very own, customized treatment plan. Invisalign uses a custom-made series of clear plastic aligners that are worn over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist plans for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You simply snap in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete and you achieve the confident smile that you've always wanted. The best part about the whole process is that most people won't even know you're straightening your teeth.

Your First Appointment The first step is to take X-rays, pictures and impressions of your teeth, which Invisalign will use to create a digital 3-D image of them. From these images a custom treatment plan is created to correspond with the exact movements of your teeth. Using this same technology, you will be shown a virtual representation of how your teeth will move with each stage of treatment. Some of the benefits of the Invisalign system include: • Virtually Invisible – Only you will know you’re wearing braces. • Completely Removable – Eat, drink, brush, and floss, or take them out for special occasions. • F aster Treatment Time – While every case is unique to each patient, treatment typically takes approximately a year for adults. For teens, the length of treatment is comparable to that of braces, but since your teeth won't be covered by wires and brackets, you'll be able to see improvement much sooner. For best results and a timely outcome, you should wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, throughout your entire treatment. Troy Family Dental is an Invisalign Premier Provider. healthy feet

Focus On Heel Pain Submitted by Associated Foot Surgeons

H

eel pain can be a nuisance or it can develop into a disabling condition. Heel pain is often caused by an inflammation of the Plantar Fascia, the band of fibrous tissue that extends from the heel to the toes. People with plantar fasciitis often describe the pain as worse when they get up in the morning or after they’ve been sitting for long periods of time. For some people, the pain subsides but returns after spending long periods of time on their feet. The most common cause of plantar fasciitis relates to faulty structure of the foot. Wearing non-supportive footwear on hard, flat surfaces puts abnormal strain on the plantar fascia. Obesity also contributes to plantar fasciitis. After obtaining a medical history and examining your foot, your Podiatrist may order an x-ray, bone scan, or MRI to help distinguish different causes of heel pain. Treatment of heel pain begins with implementation of simple at home strategies, which include: • W earing the right shoes: Wear supportive footwear at all times: indoors or outdoors • Limit aggravating activities: Avoid jogging or running and enjoy alternative activities such as swimming or cycling. • Ice: Putting an ice pack on your heel for 20 minutes can reduce inflammation. • Anti-inflammatory medicines: Advil and Aleve, plus other anti-inflammatory medicines, can help reduce inflammation. There are now also topical antiinflammatory prescription compounds that can reduce inflammation and pain. • Lose weight If you still have pain after several weeks, your Podiatrist may add one or more of these approaches: • Orthotic devices: Custom orthotic devices that fit into your shoe help treat the underlying structural abnormalities. • Night Splint: Wearing a night splint allows you to maintain an extended stretch of the plantar fascia while sleeping. This may help reduce the morning pain experienced by some patients. • Injection Therapy: In some cases, corticosteroid injections are used to help reduce the inflammation and relieve pain. • Physical Therapy Page 20 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — September 2012

Although most patients respond to non-surgical treatment, a small percentage of patients may require surgery. Your Podiatrist will discuss all the treatment options with you and determine which approach would be most beneficial for you. quality of life

September is Pain Awareness Month:

Tips on Managing Pain Submitted by Passages Hospice

C

hronic pain from an injury or illness can seriously affect your everyday life and keep you from activities you enjoy. Pain management is not only about medication but can include lifestyle changes. As we recognize Pain Awareness Month in September, try these tips to help manage chronic pain and enjoy a high quality of life. • P ractice deep breathing or meditation. Concentrating on something else can distract you from the pain. • H old someone’s hand or give them a hug. Using your other senses like touch can make pain seem less severe. • If you have been prescribed pain medication, take it regularly and according to your doctor’s instructions. It’s easier to prevent or manage pain than it is to treat it once it starts.

•T rack your daily activities and pain level to find out when your pain is worst. Knowing when you need a break to relax can help you schedule your day and minimize pain. If your pain becomes too severe, see your doctor or another healthcare professional immediately. “Sometimes pain can’t be eliminated,” says RN Carmen Velez, Director of Clinical Services for Passages Hospice, “but with a few daily habits and changes, it can be controlled.” Pain management is an important part of hospice care. Tips on Having a Better Mammogram Experience By Stephanie Dykstra, Imaging Center

T

he National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) recommendations for mammogram screenings is that women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every one to two years. Women with a higher-than-average risk for breast cancer (for example: a personal or family history, higher breast density) should talk with their healthcare provider about whether mammograms should start earlier than 40 years of age and if they should be administered more often. Fortunately, women today can receive high-quality mammograms that are cost effective with facilities that are conveniently located. In addition to doctor’s offices and hospitals, breast clinics, mobile vans, and outpatient imaging providers offer this life-saving exam, accommodating your busy schedule and active lifestyle.

Early detection of breast cancer can greatly increase the ability to isolate the cancer, treat, and cure the patient, making mammograms one of the best tools available to detect and fight the disease. By combining the screenings with regular, monthly self-exams, your chance to detect any change in the breasts increases. No one knows better about your body’s cues, health and wellness, than you! So what’s the best way to prepare for your mammogram? Once you have scheduled your screening, the medical office should be able to provide you with any necessary information you need before your appointment. General guidelines are also available online at various websites. Some tips included at one site, www.womenshealth.gov, are: • Know your menstrual cycle. If you are still having menstrual periods, try to avoid making your mammogram appointment during the week before your period. Your breasts will be less tender and swollen, helping the mammogram be more comfortable for you and giving the technician a better, clearer picture of the breasts. • Be up-front and open. If you have breast implants, be sure to tell your mammography facility that you have them when you make your appointment. • Dress for comfort. Wear a shirt with shorts, pants, or a skirt instead of a dress. This way, you can undress from the waist up and leave the bottom portion of your clothes on when getting your mammogram. Although if you forget, don’t worry! Many facilities offer longer gowns accommodating patients, helping to make the experience as comfortable as possible. • Beware of lotions! Don’t wear any deodorant, perfume, lotion, or powder under your arms or on your breasts on the day of your mammogram appointment. These things can make shadows show up on your mammogram. Some facilities do offer “wet wipes” in case you forget and end up applying lotions, but not all. It’s best to forgo the extra step(s) the morning of your exam just to be safe. • It’s best to be thorough. If you have had mammograms at another facility, have those x-ray films sent to the new facility so that they can be compared to the new films. This way, any changes or variations in your breasts can be analyzed more comprehensively, providing you with additional reassurance. • Know that you have a Choice. Your doctor may recommend where you get your mammogram but ultimately it is your choice. Call and compare prices before you choose the best provider for you. Stephanie Dykstra is a Managing Member of the Imaging Center of Alton and Imaging Center at Wolf Creek, providers of MRI, Ultrasound, X-ray, and mammography. Imaging Center is certified as a Softer Mammogram Provider®, a distinction awarded only to an elite group of healthcare facilities that offers MammoPad® as standard of care. ENNIS TERRY accepts John Simmons’ invitation to commit to help stop Diabetes through assuming the role as Chair of the 2012 Metro East Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes. John Simmons continues support in the role of Vice-Chair. The Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes, which is the American Diabetes Association signature one-day fundraising event, takes place at SIU-E on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Every dollar raised through Step Out plays an important role in supporting the Association’s mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Terry is the President and CEO of First Clover Leaf Bank and a lifelong Edwardsville resident. He has long been a supporter of the American Diabetes Association through participation in their many worthwhile fundraising events. He attributes his commitment to this cause to having two brothers and two nieces who are afflicted with Type II diabetes. “Diabetes is a deadly disease,” said Dennis Terry. “I am proud to be part of the Stop Diabetes movement as the Corporate Recruitment Chair of this year’s Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes at SIU-E, which provides a great opportunity for family, friends and coworkers to come together and raise money to help change the future of diabetes.” Participants in the Metro East Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes will enjoy great food and fun, while contributing time and spirit to help stop this deadly disease. Every person you meet has a story. Every step you take has meaning. Today, there are nearly 26 million Americans—including 22,150 people in Madison County and 20,890 people in St. Clair County—who have been diagnosed with diabetes. Sleep Better, Live Better Local Doctor Treats Sleep Apnea Without CPAP or Surgery Submitted by Dentistry With TLC

A

local dentist in the Metro East area became involved in helping patients with sleep apnea about five years ago when her husband was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. The results of his sleep study showed that he stopped breathing over 70 times every hour. His physician recommended he wear a mask while sleeping to force air down his nose. This treatment of sleep apnea is referred to as CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy. Like many sleep apnea patients, he was unable to tolerate the mask and the forced air pressure. After searching for months for an alternative to the mask and unpredictable surgeries, the local dentist learned about oral appliance therapy (OAT) and realized that she could help.

An oral appliance is a very comfortable device that looks like a retainer, fits inside the mouth and props the jaw in a forward position to treat sleep apnea without any masks, hoses or surgery. The oral appliance looks like a retainer and fits inside the mouth. It is worn only while sleeping and gently positions the jaw to keep the airway open while sleeping in any position desired. The oral appliance is easy to care for, requires no replacement parts and very little maintenance. It’s extremely easy to travel with and comes with a warranty. Patients using OAT are able to sleep through the night without snoring, feel rested in the morning, and no longer feel the need to take a nap in the afternoon. One patient said, “This little device has given me the energy to function and enjoy my life again.” In addition to an improved quality of sleep, some oral appliance patients lose weight and no longer have to get up during the night to go to the bathroom. Some patients even report their doctor taking them off of prescription medications due to their decreased blood pressure. Page 24 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — September 2012

It is estimated that 90 percent of people who have sleep apnea are unaware of its presence. These people may suffer with daytime drowsiness, feeling tired in the morning when waking up, having trouble falling asleep at night, weight gain, strokes and high blood pressure. People who do not treat their sleep apnea can be prone to fall asleep while driving, which can lead to fatal accidents involving innocent people. In addition to its ease of use, Oral Appliance Therapy can be a very cost effective way to treat sleep apnea. Due to the high volume of oral appliances that Dr. Smith provides, she is able to deeply discount the appliance below regular cost. Dr. Anna Smith has recently achieved “Silver Partner” status for her dedication to helping patients treat their sleep apnea using Oral Appliance Therapy. This recognition is given to selected dental sleep professionals by SomnoMed, a leading developer of oral appliances around the world. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and the Illinois Sleep Society. If you Dr. Anna R. Smith would like to schedule a consultation with Dr. Smith to determine if oral appliance therapy is right for you, call Dentistry With TLC at (618) 466-9367.

"I decided to get my oral appliance at Dentistry With TLC because Dr. Smith fully answered all my questions and the cost of the appliance was reasonalble. I have a much easier time using my appliance than I did my CPAP, and traveling is much easier too. I even had a sleep study done just to make sure my appliance was working and it showed great results! The bottom line is I'm sleeping better because of my oral applaince." -David B., Jerseyville, IL

“How Will I Know That I Am in Labor?”

By Kimberly N. Sanford, MD of Maryville Women’s Center

B

efore we experience labor, most of what we know about is learned from what we have seen on television or heard from friends and relations. The purpose of this article is to attempt to give some clear signs of labor. The definition of labor is determined by regular contractions that results in cervical change. There is false labor and true labor, simply put. False labor is felt as irregular contractions called Braxton Hicks. Early in pregnancy, these contractions are few and far between. As your pregnancy approaches term, these contractions become more frequent. These contractions, although strong at times, are not effective labor contractions. During the final weeks of the pregnancy, you may feel that the baby drops into the pelvis, but this may happen a few weeks to a few hours before labor begins. There is also an increase in vaginal discharge that may be the releasing of what is known as the “mucous plug”, but this is not an immediate sign that labor is about to start. The mucous plug, also, may be lost days before or at the onset of true labor. What is “true labor”? True labor can be elusive until it is experienced. The birth of a baby does not guarantee that true labor has been experienced. If you were induced during your first pregnancy and given an epidural soon after the start of that process, you may not know how to recognize the start of true labor. There are four areas that can help couples determine when true labor has started. • Timing of contractions • Change in movement • Strength of contractions • Pain of contractions The interval of contractions should be regular and greater than six contractions in one hour. The duration of those contractions can be between 30-70 seconds. Unlike false labor contractions that can be lessened or even stopped with changes in position and hydration, true labor contraction will continue through position changes. The strength of labor contractions will increase in intensity over time. They require deep breathing and usually do not allow regular conversation and activities. Lastly, false contractions are generally felt in the front, but true contractions will start in the low back and wrap around the front of the abdomen. If it is the first pregnancy, the patient should go to the hospital after experiencing these intense contractions for one hour. This should be modified based on distance the patient lives from the hospital. Bloody show or watery discharge that is persistent should prompt the patient to go to the hospital immediately. The true test that labor has begun is cervical change, in keeping with the definition of labor. The cervix should change regularly once labor is active every hour to 1.5 hours. On average, the longest labor is with the first child and subsequent labors can be more rapid, but as to everything in nature, this is not an absolute formula. Hopefully, the above guidelines can offer some assistance in determining when you are in labor. For more information, please contact Maryville Women’s Center at 618-288-2920. Rosacea Submitted by Musick Dermatology, LLC

R

osacea (pronounced "roh-ZAY-sha") manifests as generalized redness, visible blood vessels, rashy outbreaks, or pimply bumps on the face. The areas may feel hot with possible stinging. Rosacea can affect specific or all areas of the face. Rosacea affects men and women alike and can last years. Onset is usually between the ages of 30 and 50 and the cause of rosacea is unknown. Individuals who flush/blush easily and those who are fair skinned are most often affected. Men are often affected more severely but women are more frequently affected (may be associated with menopause). Rosacea is commonly misdiagnosed as “adult acne.” There are no specific tests to diagnose rosacea but a history of signs and symptoms evaluated by a health care professional or dermatologist can eliminate a misdiagnosis such as acne or rashes.

“There are no specific tests to diagnose rosacea but a history of signs and symptoms evaluated by a health care professional or dermatologist can eliminate a misdiagnosis such as acne or rashes.” Persistent red bumps or pustules are indicative of inflammatory rosacea. Vascular rosacea is when small blood vessels (telangiectasia) become visible. In rare or severe cases, rhinophyma, the nose can become thickened and enlarged and possibly the cheeks can become puffy. This is most common in middle-aged men. In ocular rosacea, the eyes are affected with a gritty or burning sensation. Styes and eyelid redness can often occur. This should be addressed by an eye care professional or dermatologist. Ocular rosacea affects approximately one-half of those with skin rosacea. Cases of rosacea can be exacerbated or “triggered” by emotional stress, some medications, foods (particularly spicy foods), caffeine, hot and alcoholic beverages, weather conditions (hot, cold, wind, high humidity), sun exposure, and some skin care products (mainly those with alcohol and fragrances). “Triggers” can be identified by keeping a diary and noting a pattern. It should be mentioned that alcohol “triggers” do not cause rosacea but may inflame the symptoms. Left untreated, rosacea tends to get worse. Topical and oral medications may be indicated for treatment and avoiding “triggers” noted to exacerbate signs and symptoms will decrease them. Laser treatments can be appropriate especially for redness and visible veins. Gentle skin care and products are advisable.

Subtype 1: FACIAL REDNESS (erythematotelangiectatic rosacea) Flushing and persistent redness. Visible blood vessels may also appear. Subtype 2: BUMPS AND PIMPLES (papulopustular rosacea) Persistent facial redness with bumps or pimples. Often seen following or with subtype 1.

Subtype 3: SKIN THICKENING (phymatous rosacea) Skin thickening and enlargement, usually around the nose.

Subtype 4: EYE IRRITATION (ocular rosacea) Watery or bloodshot appearance, irritation, burning or stinging.

Brighten Your Smile By Ty Parker, DMD, PC, Fountains Family Dentistry

E

verybody loves a bright white smile, and there are a variety of products and procedures available to help you improve yours. Some people are satisfied with the sparkle they get from daily oral hygiene and regular cleanings at the dentist’s office. If you decide that you want to whiten your teeth beyond this level, you should explore the whitening options your dentist can provide. Start by speaking with your dentist. He or she can tell you whether whitening procedures would be effective for you. Whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. Yellow discolorations whiten best, while grey discolorations don’t whiten as well. If you have had bonding, tooth-colored fillings, or crowns placed on your front teeth, the whitener will not affect the color of these materials. This will cause the fillings or bonding to stand out against your newly whitened smile. In some cases, patients may want to investigate other options, like porcelain veneers and replacing old fillings and bonding. Having a good cleaning and checkup before you start the procedure helps the whitening process immensely. The hygienist will take any external stains off the surface of your teeth, which will brighten them. The dentist will examine your teeth to make sure you have no cavities, since the whitening gel will aggravate such teeth. If you are a candidate for whitening, there are two popular ways to whiten your smile: In-office bleaching This procedure is called chair side bleaching and usually requires only one office visit. Impressions are made of your teeth to make custom whitening trays. The trays are used to continue the whitening process after the in-office process and touch up whitening at six-month intervals. The dental professional applies a gel to protect your gums. A bleaching agent is then applied to the teeth in short, twenty minute whitening sessions, which may be repeated up to three times. In-office bleaching provides the optimum result you can get from the bleaching process. In-office bleaching works well for people who have little time to bleach, have tried other bleaching that was not strong enough to achieve the desired result, or those needing a whiter smile for a fastPage 28 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — September 2012

approaching special occasion, such as a wedding or reunion. In-office bleaching yields the best results for most people. At-home bleaching At-home bleaching also starts with impressions of your teeth. Your office will custom make whitening trays for your teeth. Peroxide-based whiteners are used to bleach the enamel of your teeth. The gel is placed in your whitening tray, which is worn for 20 minutes a day for approximately two weeks. You can expect a brighter smile if you choose this option. Most notice that their teeth become a few shades lighter using this method. Bleaching should be touched up every three to six months depending on your lifestyle. As you accumulate stain through foods, drinks and smoking, you will need to renew you whitening. Fountains Family Dentistry offers an incentive program for loyal customers that gives free bleaching gel every six months. Dr. Parker and his staff would love to tell you about their whitening specials and give you a complementary evaluation to see if you are a candidate for whitening or possibly veneers. If you have any questions about whitening, contact Dr. Parker and his staff at Fountains Family Dentistry by calling 618-622-1800, or online at FountainsFamilyDentistry.com

Flu Season Preparations Submitted by Illinois Oncology, Ltd.

T

his is a short summary of information on the flu and pneumococcal (PPV) Vaccines. Please discuss with your healthcare provider before proceeding with either vaccine. A flu shot is actually a vaccine that causes your immune system to make antibodies that can either attack or kill the flu virus. Each season there is a new vaccine produced as the virus can change from year to year. Contrary to what many people think, you will not get the flu from either the flu shot or nasal spray as the virus is inactive or weakened. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older and especially for the following groups: • Age 50 and older • Have chronic health problems such as diabetes, and heart, kidney, or lung disease • Live in nursing homes or assisted living facilities • Healthcare workers • People with a weakened immune system • Women who are pregnant

“You should not get a flu shot if you are allergic to eggs, have had a previous serious reaction to the flu vaccine, have had a disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome, or are already showing flu symptoms.” You should not get a flu shot if you are allergic to eggs, have had a previous serious reaction to the flu vaccine, have had a disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome, or are already showing flu symptoms. Again, the flu shot is not recommended for children younger than six months and the nasal spray is advised for only those between the ages of 2- 49. Also, pregnant women should not use the nasal spray. Since it takes approximately two weeks for the vaccine to provide protection, it is advisable that vaccination begins as soon as the vaccine is available. Flu season usually begins in October and can continue as late as May. However, in the U.S., the number of cases usually peak in January and February. Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs cause by the pneumococcus bacteria. This bacteria can also cause ear and sinus infections and, in some instances, meningitis. Pneumococcus disease can occur year-round, unlike the flu season, which primarily occurs in the winter months. The pneumococcal vaccine is normally administered to adults once in a lifetime and is considered a Medicare Part B benefit, as is the flu vaccine. These vaccines are both available through local pharmacies, health departments, home health agencies, and frequently, through your own healthcare provider.

Is Blepharitis of The Eyelids Making Your Life Miserable? By Patricia K. Novelly, Director of Practice Relations, Illinois Eye Surgeons It’s common to have a mixture of both anterior and posterior forms of blepharitis at the same time, but in different degrees of severity. Once you are diagnosed with chronic blepharitis, your eye doctor will most likely recommend an ongoing eyelid hygiene regime that can include commercially developed, over-the-counter lid scrubs or other recommended cleansing agents. Eyelid hygiene is crucial in the treatment of blepharitis. Your eye doctor may also recommend nutritional supplements with omega-3 fatty acids, such as flaxseed oil to maintain healthy gland function. Anterior Blepharitis produce symptoms of bacteria-caused staphylococcal blepharitis and is considered more severe. It can result in loss of eyelashes and may lead to other serious conditions. Besides eyelid cleansing and hygiene, it may be necessary for your eye doctor to prescribe an antibiotic ointment for the eyelids. Pink eye due to bacteria—a common type of infection—may also occur simultaneously with blepharitis. Viruses and other types of bacteria besides staphylococcus may be a factor in anterior blepharitis. Posterior Blepharitis involves dysfunction of oil-secreting meibomian glands within the eyelids. The openings of these glands are at the inner edge of the eyelids, and oils secreted by the meibomian glands help prevent tear evaporation. Symptoms of posterior blepharitis include inflamed and thickened eyelid margins, eyelid crusting, and a variety of other symptoms. It is important to understand that a complete blepharitis cure may not exist. But good hygiene and prescription medicine can be effective in managing blepharitis, while warm compresses or other available technology such as LipiFlow® can help unclog obstructed meibomian glands.

B

lepharitis is a common eye disorder caused by either bacterial or skin condition such as dandruff of the scalp or acne rosacea. It is an inflammation of the eyelids causing red, irritated, itchy eyelids and the formation of dandruff-like scales on eyelashes. Although uncomfortable, blepharitis is not contagious and generally does not cause any permanent damage to eyesight. However, it can be reoccurring and result in missing or misdirected eyelashes and continued inflammation. There are two types of blepharitis: • Anterior blepharitis occurs at the outside front edge of the eyelid where eyelashes are attached. • Posterior blepharitis affects the inner edge of the eyelid. Page 32 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — September 2012

To clean eyelids: •W ash your hands, then dip a clean washcloth, cotton swab, or gauze pad into your cleaning solution. • Make sure you squeeze out any excess moisture. • Gently wipe across your lashes and lid margin • Rinse with cool water. •R epeat the process for your other eye, be sure to use a different washcloth, swab, or pad. • I t may be recommended that you follow this regime several times daily to start, and then once daily thereafter. When you first begin treatment, your eye doctor will recommend what cleansing agent to use, such as warm water, baby shampoo diluted with warm water, or a special over-the-counter product made specifically for cleansing the lids. “Are You Dizzy? Vestibular Therapy… A Patient’s Perspective” Submitted by Amy Loyet, Marketing Assistant at PRORehab (The name of the patient that wrote the article has been omitted to protect their privacy. This information has been used with their permission.)

I continue to build my strength and my balance has significantly improved. I am regaining speed. Occasionally, a quick movement of my head will make me dizzy, but the feeling quickly goes away. I still have some hearing loss in my right ear. I want others in this situation to know that they can overcome this problem! My message is: “Don’t give up! Every moment of progress, no matter how small, counts! Don’t look back at where you were. Think of where you are going!” For more information about Vestibular Therapy, visit our website at www.prorehabpc.com. Our Edwardsville Office will begin scheduling patients for Vestibular Therapy on September 24, 2012. Call 618-3073434 for an appointment.

W

hen I began vestibular therapy, I was very apprehensive. Being a serious marathon runner who had suffered a head injury, I wasn’t sure if my life would ever return to normal. My head injury resulted in severe dizziness, short-term memory loss, headaches, insomnia, problems concentrating, smell and hearing loss, and problems with balance. Before my head injury, I was planning to run a marathon where my goal was to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Unable to walk straight, I withdrew from the race in October 2011. My doctor referred me to a physical therapist at PRORehab Physical Therapy. My first appointment was great! The therapist listened intently as I described my symptoms and took great interest in my care. With their personable and professional demeanor, we “clicked” right away! I attended therapy one time a week for eight weeks. My sessions consisted of exercises that normally would have been simple, yet were very difficult at times to perform. These exercises required a lot of neck/head movements and standing on balance boards. I also had to play “catch.” In order to improve my balance and diminish the vertigo, I did prescribed exercises daily at home. There were good days and there were days when I struggled. I was frustrated and discouraged—wondering if I would ever be able to run again and regain any sense of normalcy. There were days that I was overwhelmed with directions on how to do certain exercises but PRORehab was there for me. Slowly the dizziness resolved and my balance improved. I began my physical therapy in early December 2011 and finished in late January 2012. In April 2012, I ran my first major race since my vertigo had started. Not yet conditioned and ready for a full marathon, I ran a half marathon in 1 hour and 50 minutes. It was slower than last year, but considering all that I had been through, I was very pleased that I could run again.
