WITH LOCAL FOODS Written by Kippy Spilker

ou’ve likely heard of the farm-to-table (also called farm-to-fork) movement, where food consumed is produced locally. The emphasis in this practice is often on organic farming, and sustainable, community-supported agriculture.

We are lucky in that we live in an area that truly supports and fosters this sort of healthy living. Are you taking advantage of it? You may not be able to raise your own livestock or grow your own produce, but there are a number of resources right here in northern Nevada, to help you and your family reap the rewards of many farmers’ and ranchers’ hard work.

WHY SEEK OUT LOCALLY GROWN FOODS? HERE ARE FIVE GREAT REASONS!

1.

Flavor. Grown locally, foods are harvested and delivered to you at their peak ripeness or quality, rather than sitting in transit for days or weeks.

2. 4.

DID YOU KNOW that many local

restaurants also support the farm-totable movement, buying local foods as often as possible? In addition, there are many retailers who carry locally-sourced food to make it easier for consumers to purchase. You can find more information about these restaurants and retailers, as well as a list of all local farms and ranches at http://nevadagrown.com, a nonprofit group who supports and encourages sustainable agriculture and healthy eating for Nevada’s communities.

2

Nutrients. With the shorter time between harvest and your table, locally-harvested food retains more of its nutrients. Safety. Not only are there fewer steps between the ranch or farm and your table, resulting in a reduced risk of contamination, local harvesters can tell you exactly how the food was grown.

3. 5.

Economy. Buying local foods means the money is spent with local farmers and growers, keeping the money local for reinvestment in the community. Environment. Local harvesting helps maintain farmland and green/open space in the community, which is also good for wildlife.

Also, please be sure to check out our comprehensive list of area Farmer’s Markets starting on page 24 of this issue. If you’re not already shopping for local meats and produce, you will likely be quite surprised at the amazing tastes of fresh – truly fresh – foods. But be sure to freeze or can some of your favorites when they’re in season, so you can enjoy them year-round, because after you experience locally-sourced fresh foods, you’ll be spoiled for everything else.

ime is flying by… here we are in the middle of summer already. I sure hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather and finding time to take advantage of it with family and friends! Recently, during an appointment with my eye doctor, I was informed that I was in the top 5 percentile of my age group because, unlike 95% of folks over 50, I do not take medicine daily. I was astounded by those percentages! It really made me stop and think about the importance of caring for our health, especially in this phase of our lives. It seems extra critical for each of us to build our body as it starts to wear down from the aging process. Fortunately, there are so many positive things that you can do to naturally build your immune system, increase stamina, fortify bones and skin and enhance overall well-being. One thing that really helped me was to have a complete lab of blood work. This process helped me to identify areas

that were deficient and needed attention. All of the deficiencies were addressed with a natural protocol of supplements and vitamins. Many of the health providers in this amazing magazine provide that service and can help guide you as to the best natural daily protocol to enhance your health. In addition, some of the easiest things that you can do on your own are to drink plenty of water every day (aim for 100 ounces), eat fresh fruits and vegetables (with a concentration on greens) and exercise daily – a 30-minute walk can do wonders for your heart and lungs. This month we are wrapping up our very informative thyroid series. Take a moment to review the recap. We also have valuable information on addiction, cancer, infections and inflammation and a great list of local farmers markets to help support your healthy choices. We hope you enjoy our July issue!

Your Thyroid and You:

The Finale

“The sky’s the limit!” - Part 2 Written by Dr. William N. Clearfield, D.O.

L

ast month we revisited the root causes of thyroid disease (1: “Leaky Gut ” Syndrome, 2: exposure to heavy metals and toxins, 3: latent infectious diseases, 4: adrenal insufficiency, 5: iodine deficiency and 6: nutrient deficiencies) and discussed the importance and functions of T3, Free T3, Reverse T3 and T4. As we continue our wrap-up, we remind you that nearly 80% of circulating thyroid is T4. T4 naturally converts to T3 so why bother with a more complicated compound? The problem is that T4-only products, Lthyroxine, synthroid, levothyroxine and levoxyl to name a few, in many cases fail to convert their substrate to T3. Failure to adequately convert T4 to T3 not only results in clinical hypothyroidism, but adrenal fatigue or “burnout.” Low thyroid output creates a stressful internal environment requiring increasing levels of cortisol. Chronically high cortisol levels result in inflammation and accelerated cardiovascular heart disease. Low T3, <3.1, is the strongest predictor of death in patients with heart disease. Low T3 is a more accurate barometer of cardiac death than either of the standard methods, cholesterol levels or cardiac ejection fraction. (4) Other causes of T4 to T3 conversion failure include dieting, renal or hepatic disorders, cancer, trauma, insulin resistance, and growth hormone deficiency. Medications that interfere with conversion include glucocorticoids, amiodarone, beta blockers,

synthetic progesterone (Provera), selenium and zinc deficiencies. Adding T3 to the regimen in a ratio of approximately 4 parts T4 to 1 part T3 is how nature produces thyroid. T3 is needed for fat loss, protects against arrhythmias, decreases with stress or dieting, and is the active hormone actually performing the work of the thyroid. We prefer to treat our patients with desiccated thyroid, T3/T4 in the exact ratio as is found in nature. We then match the right dose of desiccated T3/T4 to bring our TSH into the “optimal” range of 0.8 to 2.0 mlU/L and the free T3 as close to 3.84.2 pg/ ml as we can. There is a strong connection between gluten sensitivity and intolerance and thyroid disease. (5) Gliadin, the protein portion of gluten is chemically similar to thyroid hormones. This protein, if it enters the bloodstream as it does in celiac disease, triggers an autoimmune response in the G.I. tract and in a case of mistaken identity, the thyroid. We recommend our thyroid patients try a gluten free diet for at least 30 days. Cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, and soy among others are goitrogens, that is they increase the need for iodine in small amounts. In large amounts they can damage the thyroid. Steaming can reduce the danger by ½ and thoroughly cooking them and discarding the water in case of boiling decreases the harm by 90%. Failure to adequately convert T4 to T3 not only results in clinical hypothyroidism, but adrenal fatigue or “burnout.” Continued from page 5

Avoid very low carb or zero carb diets. They tend to inhibit conversion of T4 into T3. General food considerations include sea vegetables, kelp flakes, wakame, arame, and hijiki. Fermentable fiber increases the production of gut bacteria that produce butyrate, an immune function stimulator. Fermentable fiber comes from sweet potatoes, yams, plantains, taro, potatoes, onions, Jerusalem artichokes, and garlic. Nonpharmacologic remedies include, in addition to the above mentioned “clean diet,” an adequate supply of protein, zinc, selenium, iodine, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and fish oil. Ashwagandha and Guggulipids stimulate the production of T4 and T3. Forskolin, a weight reduction agent, increases thyroid hormone function. LTyrosine creates thyroid molecules. It is useful in depressive states and in chronic fatigue syndrome. I have thoroughly enjoyed pontificating on the mysteries and challenges of all things thyroid. Personally I have learned a great deal more about the thyroid than I was ever taught in medical school. The outpouring of support and interest in this topic is a real eye opener. The pig is a dream symbol with both positive and negative connotations depending on the context of the dream and the dreamer’s life. Given the dreamer’s struggles with addiction, the pig’s negative attributes are probably referred to. The pig lives close to the ground, perhaps too close in this case. It is gluttonous and dirty. Representing base instinctual nature, it follows its appetites wherever they lead. It is a

symbol of the dreamer when driven by his addictions--impulsive and lacking restraint. He is wedded to certain bodily urges. The pig is half-cooked, still alive, partially transformed, but not ready for consumption - not edible. It indicates that the heat of inner transformation is building

no matter how transitory, compulsive, or harmful. He must bring himself to renounce his addictions. The inner woman, strong and bold, is a symbol of the values and priorities that can bring the proper conviction and courage to the task. The ego and shadow have passed on the challenge, but the warrior feminine can provide the necessary perspective. She cuts off the pig’s ears and eyebrows before slitting its throat. To kill an addiction you must monitor what you look at and listen to. You must address and filter the thoughts, images, and voices that lead you astray. “Stop the deliberating and sentimentality; make the sacrifice!” her bold actions say.

Radio and TV stations have been systematically purchased over the last 20 years by these six wealthy companies. Therefore the news we receive from the mainstream corporate channels is very controlled, and is focused only on what they want us to know. Very little backstory research is done to explain the history behind something that’s being reported. Also, distraction is a method these corporations use daily. Celebrity news instead of real news is on all the channels every day. Also, the mainstream news outlets steer us away from current issues that matter and steer us toward issues that may be emotional distractions.

THE

CURE Unraveling the Myths of Hands-On Healing By William Bengston, Ph.D. Reviewed by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

T

his book contains scientific evidence, including clinical trials, supporting the effectiveness of energy healing. The author, however, started out as a complete skeptic. During his college years he learned how to heal himself as well as others by observing a seemingly simple, unassuming man named Ben who described himself as a “maid.” This man cleaned houses for a living but he could also make clouds dissipate as well as heal life-threatening diseases. All this piqued William Bengston’s interest so he began to follow Ben around, and even helped him clean houses. After college Bengston went on to study other healers. He was the consummate scientist and as such, he understood that the scientific community was totally skeptical about energy healing. He knew he would have to repeat his successes in controlled studies and he was prepared to do that. But Ben refused to participate in an experiment where mice were to be injected with cancer cells, so the author was stuck with having to be the healer and also having to teach members of another generation of skeptical grad students how to do it. Even though Ben and William had worked together for years, this was a major test for William. Now he had to heal and teach by himself. The technique was simple: as a healer, after setting your intention, you had to distract yourself from the idea of healing. You could do this only by controlling your thoughts – by occupying your mind with something totally unrelated. Each student was asked to make a list of twenty things they really wanted to own or to experience. They had to see visions of themselves having or doing these things and run it through their minds so that the whole visualization took only a few seconds. Then mentally rehearse it again and again while holding a small cage of four of five inoculated mice, with hands on either side of the small cage. The healing energy always seemed to come from the left hand, and the student healers noticed that the mice wanted to be close to that hand. If the cage was turned around, all the mice would run across the cage to be as close to the student’s left hand as possible. The control group of inoculated mice were kept in another building, as far away from the “healers” as possible.

BY WILLIAM BENGSTON, PHD

July 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

Mice inoculated with this particular strain of cancer had never lived more than 28 days, in any university study, anywhere in the world. When the mice chosen for the experiment developed tumors as expected, but didn’t die, it shocked the professors as well as the students doing the healing. Then when the tumors shrank and the mice regained their health, it was almost unbelievable. These clinical experiments were repeated multiple times, and although a few mice died, the majority lived and thrived, even after a biology professor secretly gave a current group of experimental mice a second injection. During one experiment some graduate students accidentally located the “control group” of mice, and feeling sorry for them, they talked to them and even named them. When most of the mice in this particular “control group” also healed, the students had to admit they had been communicating with those mice too.

Dr. Larry Dossey, scientist, author and physician, says, “Great advances in science and medicine often occur at the edge of knowledge where things don’t fit in. Often the misfits are dismissed by conventional thinkers without a hearing. Somewhere along the line, physicians forgot how to heal, and ‘healing’ became an embarrassment. Bengston is a harbinger of a marvelous trend: the return of healing to medicine.”

The author set out to prove that anyone who is willing to go through the protocol, can learn to heal. During his 36 years of research he proved that energy healing can be taught. But as he suspected, most scientists won’t accept the results, no matter how many times the experiment is repeated, simply because they are programmed to believe that there is no such thing as “hands-on healing.”

WE ALL HAVE POWER IN OUR FINGERTIPS THAT IS JUST WAITING TO BE HARNESSED TO AID OTHERS. IT SEEMS BIZARRE TO BE EXTOLLING THE IMPORTANCE OF SUCH AN OBVIOUS HUMAN ACTION, BUT I THINK THAT MANY OF US HAVE FORGOTTEN THE MAGIC THAT EXISTS WITHIN OUR HANDS.”

Dr. Bengston offers healing seminars two or three times a year but some people have learned how to heal just by following instructions in the book, which is available at your local bookseller or online. The author’s website is bengstonresearch.com.

IT’S AUTOIMMUNE – NOW WHAT?

Written by Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

THE STUDY We ended part I in last month’s issue by revealing that the chronic Lyme patient not responding to the present “classical” alternative Lyme protocols is because these are acute protocols attempting to address a chronic autoimmune disease. Indeed Lyme has been verified to be an autoimmune disease. We have learned so much about autoimmune diseases within in the last year or so. We now know that rheumatoid arthritis is triggered by bacteria in the mouth, gut, and urinary tract1. We know that multiple sclerosis is associated with leaky gut syndrome and that it is also associated with chronic EpsteinBarr infection. We also know that Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is triggered by gastro-intestinal food reactions, genetics, stress, and infections in the thyroid from 1 to 3 different viruses. In our clinical experience we’ve observed gut and infectious components driving most autoimmune conditions. Sjogrens has been proven to be related to Epstein-Barr viral and H. Pylori infections. This is the new field of autoimmunity. And we now know that chronic Lyme disease is an autoimmune condition that has joined the party. Let’s go a little deeper into the mechanisms of Lyme as an autoimmune condition. This new study1 looked at Lyme disease patients from the perspective of one specific enzyme called Matrix Metallo Protienase 10 (MMP10). This tiny enzyme chews up collagen (the main insoluble fibrous protein in connective tissue) in joints to keep it physiology balanced normally. In the people who are inoculated with the Lyme bacteria the immune system starts making antibodies (immune cells that tell the brain that these are bad cells that have to be eliminated) to this MMP10 enzyme. Even if the inoculated person has been treated by antibiotics to kill the Lyme bacteria, their immune system, frequently at the same time, is making antibodies to

14

this enzyme (MMP10) – even if they are feeling better from the antibiotic therapy. This same study has demonstrated that those antibodies, created in those people that had been treated with the antibiotics but still had symptoms, were the culprits for the ongoing problem.

THE SCIENCE For the non-biochemically- or immunologically-inclined – you may skip this paragraph. The difference between the above group that felt better with antibiotic therapy and the group that doesn’t feel better or feels worse is that there is actually a t-cell (t-cells or t-lymphocytes are white blood cells that kill and play a central role in cell-mediated immunity) response that continues to try to kill the MMP10 enzyme. B-cells make the antibodies to the MMP10 enzyme, t-cells then come in to kill the targeted enemy. Except MMP10 wasn’t the enemy until the antibodiess mistakenly attacked and targeted them for being killed. This is a classic autoimmune response. And every time something wakes up your immune system, it attacks all MMP10 enzymes in your joint collagen and you have autoimmune mediated joint pain. So let’s say the Lyme patient is being treated with antibiotics and your Western Blot or Igenix or Darkfield Microscopy say the bacteria is gone but the patient still feels terrible. It’s because your immune system is still killing the heck out of your joints (the MMP10 enzyme) and at the same time whatever other tissues in your body your immune system has already been programmed to attack. The article that we have included in the references confirms that you are getting antibody attacks (an autoimmune attack) on those other affected tissues. Who knows what other tissues you may have developed antibodies to? In our office we see antibody

attacks to the thyroid, gut, cerebellum, pancreas, and other structures daily. We don’t really know all of the other tissues that can be involved in an established immune attack, but we do know that it’s rarely only one. So the Lyme patient in the above mentioned example won’t just get joint pain from their immune system attacking the MMP10 enzyme – they will get symptoms from all of the tissues in their bodies that are vulnerable to the generalized attack. If they have rheumatoid arthritis their symptoms will flair, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis symptoms will flair, MS symptoms will flair, etc. If you don’t know that you have these immune conditions and these symptoms flair it creates quite an eclectic set of symptoms and quite a bit of confusion as to what’s going on. The diagnosis is often Lyme and the approach is often to kill the bacteria and its “coinfections.” WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? Once Lyme is chronic (has developed antibodies to MMP10) the approach is no longer to kill the bacteria. The answer is regulating your immune system. This is why we see consistently substantial improvement in our fibromyalgia patients who are also presented with Lyme diagnosis even though we were directing treatment only to dampen their immune system and stress response. In the end the problem for the chronic “Lyme” patient was autoimmunity all along. THE FIX It all starts in the gut. There’s definitely a gut-immune system connection. It’s a pretty well known fact that 70% of the immune system resides in the gut. We have observed clinical improvement by figuring out the GI tract and healing in terms of 1. Utilizing as many as 7 different diets based on that patient’s history, exam, and blood work. 2. Working with the bacteria population in the gut (we rarely use probiotics). 3. Killing off bad bacteria. 4. Making sure that antigens from food and bacterial components also are absorbed less because when they’re being absorbed at too high a rate in your gut your immune system is unable to calm down. When your immune system calms down it can better fight off other infections in your body and can come into better balance.

ts r a t s l al t I ...” . . . t . u “ g in the

Relative to number 7, we have seen (and this is a key to long term recovery) that there is a significant brain/neurological component to addressing autoimmunity. So frequently, chronic autoimmune patients are massively stressed out, often to the degree that you could accurately designate these patients as experiencing some level of PTSD. These sufferers have an overfiring fear mechanism in the brain (specifically in the amygdala) that is driving their stress hormone cortisol too high or too low in such a way that your immune system is further continuously out of balance allowing it to keep attacking your “healthy tissues.” And this is not a mechanism you can sufficiently dampen with drugs (Xanax, Prozac, etc.) or adaptocrines, or neurotransmitters for any length of time because none of them are directly affecting the mid-brain (the location of the fight/ flight response) from which the problem originates. So the initial battles for dampening the immune system are gut and “stress” mechanisms. Then, and only then, can the practitioner have any chance of directly handling any other contributing infections. Yes, we handle the non-gut infections last, not first, if at all. And that generally is the algorithm for chronic pain, many chronic conditions, autoimmunity, and as of February 25, 2016, “Lyme disease as well.” For more information contact Dr. Rutherford or Dr. Gates at 775-329-4402 or visit them online at http:// PowerHealthRenoNV.com See ad page 15.

The freezer still seems essential. The contents of the freezer vary with the current year’s harvest. The pressure cooker softens vegetables, but freezing preserves their texture. I’ve learned to label bags so I don’t thaw diced bell peppers for dinner when I wanted green beans. Some of last year’s peaches made it into the freezer, too, but preserving them by canning them in a hotwater bath would have been an option, too. Shredded zucchini is frozen, so it’s easy to make desserts, such as zucchini bread, in winter. It’s fun to dry or dehydrate foods. Dried beans have

T JUST MAKES SENSE to eat locally grown food as much as possible. Not only is less petroleum used to transport it, but best of all, local produce is picked ripe — when it’s at its peak of flavor and nutrition.

“i think of my canning as fast food, paid for in time up front.” – Barbara Kingsolver

Saving Summer Produce for the Cold Months Canning is still basic. For years, I’ve used a water-bath canner to preserve tomatoes, pickles and some orchard fruits. High-acid foods can be safely preserved this way, but when in doubt, the Ball Blue Book of Preserving gives guidance in all aspects of canning.

I cut and salt the cabbage destined to be sauerkraut, then put it in the crock and pound it with a wooden mallet. When preparing sauerkraut, use noniodized salt to protect the necessary bacteria for fermentation. It takes only a few weeks for the cabbage to ferment. Then I pack it in quart jars that are processed in a water bath.

Fermenting and pickling add variety. Cabbage and cucumbers are two things that I ferment in crocks in the basement before canning. The advantage of putting cucumbers in a brine-filled crock is that it allows me to add a few each day as I gather them from the garden. After the crop has peaked and we’re able to eat each day’s harvest, I allow a couple weeks for those in the crock to pickle before I can them.

I sometimes use a more direct method of making sauerkraut and just pack shredded cabbage into clean quart jars, sprinkle 1 teaspoon of noniodized salt on top and fill the jars up to their necks with boiling water. After placing the lid and ring on, the cabbage will ferment right in the jar without further processing. Cabbage (and sauerkraut) is high in vitamin C, so we don’t need to import oranges in the winter!

become a staple at our house, and we use them frequently in winter meals. Many varieties of beans have made their way to us through friends and seed savers. If one variety of beans appears dry and I have an extra moment, I cut or pull the vines and put them in a basket in the hot tool shed. They stay there until the slower evenings when I pull out a lawn chair to face the sunset and sit and shell beans into a large bowl. When the chickens head into their coop, I close up the henhouse and go inside for the night, too. No wonder I find it a pleasure instead of work! DIET One of The Best Ways to Fight Cancer cancer by not eating sugar. The reason is that the brain requires sugar at the same level of intensity that it requires oxygen. However, by stimulating the formation of ketones (by eating a calorie restricted ketogenic diet) you protect the brain because it can switch over and burn ketones for energy instead of sugar. Cancer cells cannot do that because they require a constant source of sugar.

By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

T

here are many different ideas and opinions in the field of cancer treatment regarding which diet is best to address that treatment. One of the only diets to undergo intense scientific study to date is a calorie-restricted ketogenic diet. Long ago, research proved that cancer cells of all types use an abnormal way of burning sugar, called anaerobic metabolism. It is the process of burning sugar without using oxygen. The problem with this method is that it is 18 times less efficient at producing a given amount of energy from a given amount of sugar. This means the cancer cells need to consume 18 times more sugar than normal cells on a moment by moment basis, to grow and prosper. The problem is that you cannot kill the

Supported by evidence from more than 1,000 scientific and clinical studies over the last several decades, the ketogenic diet has been shown to cause some major changes in the metabolism of cancer cells. This research has revealed some new, non-toxic treatment strategies that target tumor cell energy production and metabolism. This new method called “Mitochondrial Enhancement Therapy” (MET) denotes a transition from glucose (sugar) metabolism to ketone metabolism which causes a number of major changes that start to weaken and kill cancer cells. It triggers a major reduction in inflammation, a blocking and decrease in the formation of new blood vessels and an increase in what is called apoptosis or cancer cell suicide. This is one reason why the ketogenic diet is under consideration for use in numerous neurological and neurodegenerative diseases as well, where inflammation is part of the pathology.

This is a systemic therapy that simultaneously targets both the tumor cells as well as the microenvironment. It has proven itself to be effective in retarding progression in many different cancers. Because all tumor cells suffer common defects in their ability to process energy, they become highly vulnerable to therapies that target these processes. Non-toxic therapies that target cancer cell fermentation will go far in managing the disease without causing further toxicity in the patient. Any doctor that tells you diet is inconsequential and has no effect on cancer growth is simply not up on the latest research and is doing a disservice to their patients! Editor’s Note There are several versions of the ketogenic diet, including: • Standard ketogenic diet (SKD): This is a very low-carb, moderate-protein and high-fat diet. It typically contains 75% fat, 20% protein and only 5% carbs (1).

• High-protein ketogenic diet: This is similar to a standard ketogenic diet, but includes more protein. The ratio is often 60% fat, 35% protein and 5% carbs.

• Cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD): This diet involves periods of higher-carb refeeds, such as 5 ketogenic days followed by 2 high-carb days.

However, only the standard and high-protein ketogenic diets have been studied extensively. Cyclical or targeted ketogenic diets are more advanced methods, and primarily used by bodybuilders or athletes.

• Targeted ketogenic diet (TKD): This diet allows you to add carbs around workouts.

INFLAMMATION DAMAGES OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM By Michael Gerber MD.HMD

INFECTIONS All inflammation causes oxidative damage, rusting of the cells, and can be countered by using anti-oxidants of which vitamin C is the premier. Orally, vitamin C supplementation from 2,000 mg to 10,000 mg and intravenously from 25,000 to 200,000 mg per day can block all the toxicity from infections, viral or bacterial1. Many acutely and chronically ill patients test positively for infections. These can be treated with homeopathic viral injections which are anti-viral. Patients generally notice a marked energy improvement in two or three days. Bacterial infections which are commonly found in inflamed patients include Lyme disease (Borrelia bergdorpheri). This disease, often called our modern syphilis, is the great

masquerader and can look like many diseases including arthritis, Parkinson’s, asthma, insomnia or bipolar illness. Helicobacter pylori are present in 50% of us and cause all manner of illness, not just ulcers. This year the bacteria Streptococcus pneumonia has been testing positively in patients with the bad weeks- and month-long pneumonia and bronchitis, as well as sore throats and body pain. By employing anti-oxidants, energized herbal tinctures and antibiotics we have been able to swiftly improve these powerful inflammatory inducing infections. Toxic root canaled teeth cause severe chronic infection. Chronic infections in the devitalized, dead teeth cause cancer and chronic diseases. The German Biological Dentists call them a corpse in the attic.

HEAVY METAL TOXICITY Our environment is full of heavy metal toxins such as: mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, aluminum, antimony, nickel and others. They create toxicity and cause all manner of inflammatory disease. If you have amalgam (silver) fillings in your mouth (50% mercury) you could be toxic from mercury. Remember the expression, “Mad as a Hatter”? The English hat makers at the turn of the last century used mercury to firm up the felt as they made their hats. Within one year they were renowned for becoming angry, bipolar, schizophrenic and demented. Hair analysis gives us an accurate overview of good and bad metals. Patients who drink out of wells in Fernley and Fallon sometimes are 11 to 20 times above the normal limit for arsenic and experience crushing depression and fatigue. Removing arsenic with high sulfur compounds like garlic and onions as well as MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) helps normalize their inflammation. Chelators (from the Greek, Chellos, the claw, to grasp or bind) such as EDTA, DMSA, DMPS, chlorella, cilantro, alpha lipoic acid, N acetyl cysteine and others remove heavy metal accumulation. Hello, poor Flint, MI citizens. Nobody has mentioned EDTA chelation to remove their lead. TOXIC LIFESTYLES Books have been written about lifestyle issues. My favorites advise you to please only eat organic food as much as you can. GMO foods, commercial corn, soybeans and canola oil contain glyphosate (Round Up) in concentrations 14 to 16 times above non GMO levels. It has been proven to cause cancer and neurological disease in experimental animals. Go to Mercola.com for a complete rundown. Tap water contains chlorine, which keeps us away from bacterial toxins and is also carcinogenic and anti-thyroid. Filter your drinking water. Fluoride is a terrible thyroid toxin and causes osteoporosis, bone tumors and aging. Please avoid fluoride-containing toothpaste; it causes dental fluorosis, white and brown discoloration of teeth. Xylitol toothpaste inhibits cavities better than fluoride and is non-toxic. Basics like salt, which is important for those with weak adrenals causing leaking of salt into the urine, is good to supplement. Table salt high in aluminum used as an anti-caking, dehydrating agent has

been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, so avoid table salt. Our favorite salts are Celtic Salt from France and Real Salt from Utah which contain13% trace minerals. Sucrose and high fructose corn syrup (made from GMO corn) as well a high grain diet cause inflammation, obesity, diabetes, reactive low blood sugar, anxiety, fatigue, depression and insomnia. Casein, the milk protein, can cause allergic reactions in sensitive people. Gluten is one of the proteins in wheat which can cause gut inflammation and increase the risk of chronic illness and inflammation. We test for all of these toxins with our German inspired testing equipment, EAV – electro acupuncture by Vol – which gives immediate testing results for viral, bacterial, diet and lifestyle modification.

EMOTIONAL STRESS Psychoneuroendocrinology (emotional, brain, hormone relationships) exists. Our emotions and emotional history influence us powerfully. Most of us have had episodes of grief and loss; physiological, physical, sexual and verbal abuse; fear of loss; financial worries; fear of disease,

death and anxiety around health, doctors, dentists; and, in some, fear of leaving the house. These toxic, emotional stresses are the result or cause of inflammatory reactions in the body. Resolving these emotions via psychotherapeutic intervention such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique, tapping), EMDR (eye movement therapies), soul memory work and very importantly, homeopathic remedies can play a powerful role. Homeopathic remedies are the psychiatric intervention I wished for in my psychopharmacologic research training. If you are suffering from acute or chronic ill health, please try to reduce your inflammatory influences. See ad on this page

How do I get a medical marijuana card?

The process of getting your card is very easy once you fill out the paperwork and visit with the Doctor. For patients who do not have a medical marijuana card and would like to get one here in the state of Nevada, if you only have a Nevada State ID you will have to pay a flat fee of $250. You can set up an appointment with one of the local doctors in town. If you have a copy of your current medical records it always helps to bring that in. Otherwise, you can set an appointment to have a conversation with the doctor. He examines and evaluates you just the same as any other doctor would. Although the length of time it takes to get the card is improving, currently it is approximately a four-week wait. People from any other state can easily get their MMJ card from PrestoDoctor. com online for $69.99 with either your state ID, Passport, Passport card or military ID. All you have to do is make an appointment online, then choose whether you would like to speak with a male or female doctor. Next you will set up a Skype video conference call with a real doctor and you have a brief consultation. After your conversation with the Doctor, they decide if medical marijuana is the right treatment for your condition. You will receive your official paperwork with your card 3 to 5 days later, then you can start to purchase. Some patients have an urgent need due to acute illness or the rapid onset of a certain debilitating disease. One of the helpful aspects about PrestoDoctor is that they are with you throughout your whole medical marijuana journey. If you have questions, they can help you from a medical perspective.

A knowledgeable employee will guide you through the process and give you some easy "how to" answers. There is trained staff on duty at all times who are very knowledgeable about each of the products carried at the dispensary. While dispensary personnel are not medical doctors, they do have the knowledge to guide you in the right direction. The staff will learn about your needs and then work with you regarding the type of products that would be beneficial for your individual treatment. The dispensary experience is focused on clarifying confusion and potential misunderstanding regarding the use Cannabis. The dispensary will document and track all the products you buy, so that there is an understanding of your individual protocol and medicinal needs. The dispensary has a very wide range of products, which makes it much easier to choose the product(s) that will be most effective for you. Many of the current products do not have THC in them, such as CBD only brownies, Agave Sticks, super foods, balms, chewing gum and sprays. These products are CBD only, so you will not get the psychoactive feeling THC sometimes produces. There is also line of CBD-only pet treats from bones to powders that you can sprinkle on your pet’s food. They help in the treatment of pets that have nervous anxiety, cannot stop itching or have arthritis. There have been amazing results for older pets using the CBD dog treats.

Saturday and Sunday - EpicMix Photo will have large conversation hearts for guests to take photos with in various locations around the resort. Photographers will also be available at the race course taking photos.

Written by Bill Nickerson The artichoke (Cynara scolymus), is as old as human civilization itself; artichokes were cultivated by the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. It is native to the Mediterranean region, an area of the world with one of the lowest rates of chronic disease and one of the highest life expectancies. It is a perennial in the thistle group of the sunflower (Compositae) family. The “vegetable” that we eat is actually the plant’s flower bud. If allowed to flower, the plant will produce a beautiful blossom of violet-blue color.

In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, VALENTINE’S SCAVENGER HUNT the artichoke is also a choleretic, i.e., it helps to stimulate the production of bile by references Saturday and Sunday - prizes will be hidden in the village and on the liver.
