New Year new you,

new us! HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE! With an understandable focus on resolutions and fresh starts, we wanted to take this opportunity to share not only some information about and tips for achieving and keeping your own resolutions, but to let you know about some changes going on here at Healthy Beginnings in 2016, as well.

DID YOU KNOW? IN 2015 … The top resolutions, according to nielsen.com, were health-related. According to the website, 37% of those surveyed resolved to stay fit and healthy and 32% wanted to lose weight.

PLANS FOR

Healthy Beginnings in 2016

According to Healthcare Global magazine and the National Institutes of Health, about 33% of all Americans sought alternative or integrative treatments instead of going to their doctor. Among the top 10 methods people employed were the use of probiotics, melatonin, acupuncture, reiki, roseroot, fecal transplants and healthy oils, such as fish and coconut.

The top five issues people attempted to treat in an alternative or integrative manner, according to the CDC, were back pain, neck pain, joint pain, arthritis and anxiety.

FIVE TIPS FOR RESOLUTION SUCCESS

More topics regarding current health trends and keeping our pets healthy

1. Focus on what’s most important to you, not what you believe others think your resolutions should be.

Renewed focus on local resources and healthy events

2. Be thoughtful. Don’t evaluate your goals at the last minute, and, if possible, choose only one major resolution.

There are some who would say that our body, for the most part, replaces itself every 10 years. The idea behind this is that your cells are constantly regenerating (See “You Are What You Eat … Literally!” on page 5) and that in 10 years, everything has been replaced. This has certainly been debated, but one thing we can tell you is that Healthy Beginnings turns 10 in 2016, and we definitely feel fresh and new! Come celebrate the new year with us, and be sure to drop us a line to let us know how we’re doing.

3. Give yourself time. Whatever you decide you want to change, you didn’t get to where you are overnight. In addition to time, give yourself some steps for achieving your resolution. That way you can celebrate smaller accomplishments along the way to the “big win.” 4. Tell someone what your resolution is. You’re more likely to follow through if you know someone is aware of your goal. 5. Cut yourself some slack. It’s ok if you have a few temporary setbacks, just don’t allow them to get in your head and make you give up.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I love the start of a new year. It feels like you have a fresh start to create new possibilities on a blank slate. The start of the year ahead is a wonderful time to reflect on the past year as well as design the things that you want to do in the year to come. Setting new year’s resolutions may not be everyone’s cup of tea, yet it can be a fun way to tackle some of those items that you truly want to accomplish. Perhaps you may want to pick one thing that you feel that you are doing fairly well and simply make it a goal

to improve on that area for 2016. Approaching your resolutions with progress as the goal will help contribute to success. Another idea that you may want to try is to identify something that you would like to say goodbye to in 2016 and that could be your resolution. Naturally, health and fitness are the categories that are at the top of the most common new year goals. Perhaps this year you could make a fun game with a friend or a family member to tackle your resolutions together. Maybe you could team up with a partner or a group of people to keep each other accountable each week as you work toward achieving your goals. Or make it a fun family activity, set new year’s resolutions as a family and help each other stay on track. Whatever idea

works for you to help you realize your goals is a great way to kick off 2016. Success starts with keeping the resolution small and specific. Such as, rather than declare “exercise more,” break it down to an actual weekly goal, such as exercise 30 minutes a day four times a week. Giving yourself smaller incremental goals is a way to chunk it down to a more realistic goal and give you the opportunity to be successful at making progress towards completing the activity. Our January issue is full of inspiring information to start your new year, from learning about your body’s ability to regenerate, or deciding to make an appointment with our health providers to address an area of your health that you may have been putting off. Let’s make it a great New Year!

We would love to hear from you on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.

Y U ARE WHAT Y U EAT Written by Kippy Spilker

W

ith the holidays behind us, so is the propensity to indulge, “cheat” on diets, make exceptions (“just this once …”) and generally overeat, right? Ok, there may be a few leftover holiday goodies you are just sensibly finishing up. After all, you don’t want them to “go to waste.” Well, if you are lucky, what you eat won’t “go to waist,” but even if weight gain is not an issue for you, the condition of your body and its various parts certainly should be. What you eat today will affect your body either immediately, tomorrow, next week or next month, so take note – here’s some information about your body’s regeneration (what you eat today becomes what you are tomorrow) and what you can do to help start 2016 on a positive note. SKIN – The largest organ on your body, your skin is said to regenerate about every 27-30 days. Health tips for the skin include thorough cleansing twice daily with a gentle non-

Literally

fragranced soap, moisturizing and sunscreen. Here are 3 foods known to help aid in healthy skin: Strawberries – More vitamin C per serving than oranges or grapefruit, and according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people who eat foods rich in vitamin C have fewer wrinkles and less dry skin related to age. Olive oil – Good for the inside and outside, the anti-inflammatory properties of olive oil will help soften your skin. Use it in your daily cooking, or apply directly to dry lips and skin. Pumpkin – Full of vitamins C, E and A as well as hydrating properties, pumpkin also has carotenoids, which are plant pigments that neutralize free radicals in the skin, helping to fight against wrinkles and other effects of aging. STOMACH – The cells in your stomach reportedly regenerate every 3-5 days and to keep them healthy, remember the four Fs: Fermented Foods – Kefir, kimchi, miso and sauerkraut top the list of foods filled with a beneficial bacteria that makes them easy to digest. Fiber – Beans, whole grains, lentils, raspberries and artichokes are all great high-fiber, low-fat options. Fish Oil – With anti-inflammatory properties, this beneficial oil can help your heart and your digestive tract. While it’s great to eat fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel, you might want to add fish oil supplements if you suffer from IBS. Research published in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology reported that analysis of 91 adults showed that those with IBS had the lowest levels of these healthy fats in their blood. Fluids – Particularly water. It’s important to stay hydrated, and while many fluids will

do that, you should avoid caffeinated beverages, especially if you have acid reflux, as they can trigger heartburn and are actually diuretics, which cause fluid loss. LIVER – Your body’s fat-burning organ, the liver is your own personal filtration system: in with the bad, out with the good. We’ve read that its cells regenerate every 5-12 months, and here are some foods that can help keep that vital organ healthy: Garlic – This pungent plant activates enzymes that flush out toxins and has high amounts of allicin and selenium, which aid in liver cleansing. Avocado – Full of healthy fats, avocados help your body produce glutathione, which is an antioxidant needed for our livers to filter out harmful toxins. Turmeric – We’ve highlighted this beneficial spice before, and now it’s in the spotlight again, acting as a natural detox for your liver. Lemons & Limes – Two citrus fruits with high vitamin C content, which help turn toxic materials into substances that can be absorbed by water. The old joke goes, “My doctor told me ‘you are what you eat’ so I’m going to go eat a skinny person.” We recommend trying some of these other ideas first.

The brain? It only controls everything. But the cause or perpetrator of chronic pain? Yes, at least in my case, and since then Dr. Gates and I have found chronic stress syndromes (PTSD type) to be involved as one of the major causes and perpetuators in most chronic pain sufferers.

The fact is that chronic pain syndromes are complex multi-systems conditions that do not respond to ‘one size fits all’ solutions.

Next I was referred to a Doctor in San Diego who did something called functional medicine - an “alternative” type of care and the next new thing. If practiced by someone fully schooled in the field it can be a valuable component to overcoming chronic pain. This doctor started to educate me about gluten, celiac, Hoshimoto’s Thyroiditis and autoimmunities - things I never heard of before. It turned out I had them all including chronic fatigue, peripheral neuropathy, and more. In retrospect I can add leaky gut, hypoglycemia, SIBO (small intestine bowel over growth), numerous food allergies, parasites, and H. Pylori. WOW! I was probably autoimmune most of my life and had it triggered by the pneumonia. Previously I only knew autoimmune disease to be things like MS, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis. OK. Now what? What’s the test for this? What’s the diet? Gluten free? Of course. Paleo? What pills? Can this be helped? He confirmed that although the testing was poor and the labs inconsistent and unreliable, it could be helped with a lifestyle change specific to me, in order to get well and stay well. Thus, I became a patient and student of this doctor and his methods. Functional medicine and functional neurology were in their infancy and just developing at the time.

8

It took me a long time to get well – all systems and conditions had to be investigated and addressed for my case. The fact is that chronic pain syndromes are complex multi-systems conditions that do not respond to ‘one size fits all’ solutions. As a result the path back to health is never the same for any two chronic pain sufferers. It was hard. It required discipline. It took trusting Dr. Ted Carrick’s work and Dr. Michael Johnson, both Board Certified Functional Neurologists as well as Dr. Datis Kharrizian, Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner and board certified Chiropractic Neurologist, and their teachings. And now as a practitioner in this field treating these conditions, I can tell you it is never easy or simple. But this complex, organized approach to chronic pain works consistently and has produced short term and long term results in myself and subsequently many other chronic pain sufferers with whom we have worked over the last 7 years. Today my personal health is 95% improved and my “bad days” are as good as most people’s “good days”, maybe better. It wasn’t easy, (have I said that before?) but it was worth the effort. For those of you who have chronic pain or neurological conditions (which is an article for a different day) that just won’t resolve or improve or for those of you who have almost any type of chronic disease or pain issue, recovery or more accurately improvement may be possible, but it will be a journey, there’s no getting around it. There’s no silver bullet. That’s the proverbial bad news. The good news is that if you embrace this comprehensive chronic pain model and are willing to pay the price moderate to substantial improvements to your present health are probably waiting for you. MEDICAL

MARIJUANA

th

th

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE/WHAT ARE THE MEDICINAL BENEFITS OF MEDICAL MARIJUANA? Cannabis, or marijuana, has been part of humanity's medicine chest for almost as long as history has been recorded. Modern research suggests that cannabis is a valuable aid in the treatment of a wide range of clinical applications. These include pain relief -- particularly of neuropathic pain (pain from nerve damage) -- nausea, spasticity, glaucoma and movement disorders. Marijuana is also a powerful appetite stimulant, specifically for patients suffering from HIV, the AIDS wasting syndrome, or dementia. Emerging research suggests that marijuana's medicinal properties may protect the body against some types of malignant tumors and are neuroprotective.

WHAT KIND OF HEALTH BENEFITS CAN BE EXPECTED? Generally, consuming marijuana may help in the treatment of a variety of symptoms with the primary two being pain and nausea that may derive from a wide range of illnesses. Receptors in the brain that allow uptake of the chemical compounds in cannabis are actually part of the most widespread receptor system in the body. Not only is the body naturally attuned to these molecules, it also uses them to great effect — numerous studies have established that cannabinoids help reduce pain and other distressing symptoms.

10

WHAT ARE THE USES? MANY PEOPLE KNOW (I THINK) THAT IT CAN BE USED FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT, BUT CAN YOU EXPAND UPON THAT AND OTHER USES? Beyond pain management and nausea control, marijuana, depending on the strain, can provide an uplifting and energizing effect, sharpening mental focus and attentiveness. Other strains can offer a more relaxing and calming effect creating a deep sense of contentment. Interestingly, more and more endurance athletes who must cope with high levels of pain, stress, and boredom during grueling hours-long events are using marijuana in their recovery phases. "It may help some athletes get into a zone and put their bodies through very tough physical activity,” says Mark Ware, a McGill University professor and executive director of the Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids. “It may enable them to focus on those repetitive tasks.”

PLEASE DISPEL SOME OF THE MOST COMMON MYTHS. During the course of America’s “war on drug” marijuana was frequently portrayed as a dangerous drug but in fact it is far less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco. Around 50,000 people die each year from alcohol poisoning. Similarly, more than 400,000 deaths each year are attributed to tobacco smoking. By comparison, marijuana is nontoxic and cannot cause death by overdose.

It is also accused of being a so-called “gateway” drug, leading to harder drug use. For most of the population this is not the case. A report by the Institute of Medicine found “no conclusive evidence that the drug effects of marijuana are causally linked to the subsequent abuse of other illicit drugs.”

z Knowledgeable staff to help with strain recommendations

Marijuana opponents often claim that cannabis use causes apathy and a lack of motivation. In fact, studies done on test subjects in which they were given a high dose of cannabis regularly over a period of days or weeks found that there was no loss in motivation or ability to perform. Furthermore, studies indicate that cannabis users tend to have higher paid jobs than non-users.

HCG &

PAIN MANAGEMENT Written Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

CG, the hormone secreted by the placenta in pregnant women, has many uses besides weight loss and post steroid use hormonal normalization1-4. It has several potential mechanisms of action for pain management. It stimulates the production of testosterone, progesterone, estradiol, and thyroid, all of which should bring benefits to some pain patients.2-4 HCG may also achieve pain reduction through neurogenesis (new nerve production) and tissue healing.

DO YOU HAVE NON STOP ACHES AND PAINS?

Intractable Leg Pain A 62 year old man presented with a one year history of intractable leg pain after being suspended in an unusual surgical position during prostate surgery. The pain was constant, sharp, stabbing and aching in nature and ran down the front side of both legs. He also had a very toxic reaction to aluminum, arsenic and cadmium and complained of erectile dysfunction, hypertension, low testosterone and hypothyroidism. During his post-surgical course he had been treated with many opiate analgesics, gabbapentin and muscle relaxants, to no avail for his pain. The side effects of the drugs inhibited his ability to work. I thought that it was a clear case for neural therapy injections with procaine and ozone to address the pain and did a Frankenhauser injection above the prostate and Prolozone with Zeel, triamcinolone, procaine and ozone to the lumbar spine. This was repeated twice

with no improvement in his pain. Referrals were made for chiropractic with ABS back stretching (the computerized rack), massage therapy, physical therapy and stress reduction techniques. IV chelation therapy and oral chelation therapy were commenced to reduce his heavy metal burden and we found an infected root canaled tooth, which was removed. He was started on thyroid replacement, cortisol replacement, neurotransmitter precursor therapy with 5-HTP, tyrosine and cysteine, Pandan for ED, homeopathic remedies, parasite treatments, viral detox, parent essential fatty acid replacement and other anti-inflammatory nutrients. After a period of time with no improvement in his pain I referred him to a pain management clinic which started him on a morphine pump and a spinal electrical stimulation device. This approach made him nauseated, dizzy, wasn’t helpful for his pain and he couldn’t work. Upon reading an article in the Townsend Letter on pain relief with hCG I decided to try it. It took us some time to adjust the dose. At first

This has resulted in nearly total relief of his pain. He notes a slight twinge upon going to bed but otherwise is completely pain free all day. A side effect of this therapy has been a 75 pound weight loss. The pain relief commenced before the weight loss and he has no more erectile dysfunction with a PSA of < 0.1. ARE YOU THYROID DEFICIENT?

Part 6

Infections and Thyroid Disease Written by Dr. William N. Clearfield, D.O.

B

ack in the dark ages, (for me) circa 1976, medical students were dutifully taught the ABCs of thyroid disease as a “Goldilocks” issue. “Normal” is a wide range (0.45 to 4.5 mIU/L); if it too runs too fast, slow it; if it runs too slow, speed it (up). Indeed, the American Society of Clinical Endocrinologists, I.e. “The Specialists,” despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary(1-21), for starters, still insists this is the only approach to obtain thyroid rapture: “Serum thyrotropin (TSH) is single best screening test for primary thyroid dysfunction for vast majority of outpatient clinical situations. “Normal” is 0.404.5mIu/L Standard treatment is replacement with levothyroxine. The decision to treat subclinical hypothyroidism when serum thyrotropin is less than 10 mIU/L should be tailored to individual patient.” Any Treatment Other Than Desiccated T4 Is Outside Realm Of Medicine (22) Our prior discussions (Patient Mysteries: Are You Thyroid Deficient?, Parts I-V, Healthy Beginnings Magazine, August through December, 2015) of all things thyroid, in my opinion, convincingly debunked this reductionist theory. The hundreds of phone calls and queries since the series began, frequently along the lines of, “it’s as if you were speaking to me personally,” and “I’ve suffered for years, and no one would listen,” convinced us to continue to root out the real causes of thyroid disease. Our exposé of the six major root causes of thyroid disease lead us to view the thyroid not as a separate entity, but being intimately involved in a wide range of “normal” bodily functions.

14

“The Big 6” 1. Gastrointestinal or ‘ Leaky Gut ” Syndrome 2. Heavy Metals and Toxins 3. Infectious Diseases 4. Adrenal Insufficiency 5. Iodine Deficiency 6. Nutrient Deficiencies The past two episodes of Patient Mysteries: Are You Thyroid Deficient? covered, in depth, the interaction between the thyroid gland, gastrointestinal system and brain, and the role heavy metals and toxins play in thyroid dysfunction. We explored the common denominator, “molecular mimicry,” connecting each root cause to every other root cause (so far). To recap, molecular mimics are abnormal, or “foreign” proteins that evolve when the body mistakenly incorporates similar but abnormal compounds into normal tissue. Today’s fun filled, action packed, episode explores the role of infectious diseases as a disruptor of thyroid harmony. The Autoimmune-Infectious Disease Thyroid Connection Similar to gluten and toxic chemicals, constant exposure to infectious agents is inflammatory in nature. In its wake, diseased and damaged tissues are left. The former – infectious agents, through the magic of ‘molecular mimicry’ – fools normal tissues into not producing their desired end product. T3 and T4, in the case of the thyroid, eventually are recognized as deficient. Like a lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles, the body belatedly reacts to this acquired deficiency state, activates the immune system, and produces proteins to counter the foreign entities. (In the case of the Philadelphia Eagles, the deficiency state results in them fooling themselves every summer. This is the year and this year, like the past 55, we end up watching the Super Bowl from the sidelines, again, and counting). In reality, the immune system is attacking itself. Infectious agents linked to thyroid disease include Herpes simplex 1 and 2 (both oral and genital herpes), Epstein-Barr virus (mononucleosis, multiple sclerosis, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia), Yersinia enterocolitica (food poisoning from uncooked pork, and contaminated meat and dairy), Hepatitis C (blood or body fluids contracted from an infected person), H . pylori, (a bacteria that attacks the stomach lining creating ulcers), and Borrelia burgdorferi , the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

Excepting for Lyme Disease, diagnosis is rather straightforward. Herpes, Epstein Barr, Hepatitis and H. Pylori are found in blood, Yersinia and H. Pylori are in stool cultures. Lyme disease requires specialty testing (IGeneX is the only reliable test we recommend). Viral infections are susceptible to Humic AcidMonolaurin, a free-radical scavenger and natural antioxidant. It binds positively and negatively charged ions, boosting the immune system, and contains olive leaf, a known antiviral, antibacterial and fungal agent. Yersinia and H. pylori are treated with antibiotics like any other bacterial disease, with the added knowledge that we need to maintain the flora of the GI tract with pro and prebiotics (chicken soup and a little Vitamin D wouldn’t hurt either.) Lyme Disease is a whole other entity, which requires a dedicated section of its own. Special consideration needs to be given to some difficult to detect, but common, agents. Blastocystis hominis, an intestinal parasite, is present in up to 50% of people in developing countries. Blastocystis presents with hives, irritable bowel syndrome and elevated thyroid antibodies. Detection is done with a specialized parasitology exam and treatment consists of Saccharomyces boulardii, oil of oregano, and/or antibiotics. Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, or “SIBO,” is a malabsorption syndrome present in more than 50% patients with hypothyroidism (24) . Normally, gram positive bacteria reside in the small intestine. SIBO, as its name implies, results from an elevated level of (harmful gram negative) organisms, specifically E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. These invaders damage the intestinal lining, presenting clinically as intestinal pain, diarrhea and weight loss. Root causes of SIBO include achlorhydria (low or absent production of stomach acid) , a deficiency of the pancreatic digestive enzymes, an immunodeficiency syndrome, small intestinal obstruction, diverticula, and/or intestinal motility disorders. (25) SIBO relates to thyroid disease courtesy of the “leaky gut” syndrome. (See Part IV, Thyroid Deficiencies.) (26) The “leaky” gut leads to autoimmune antibody production and eventually to Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Lactulose or glucose breath tests or a small intestinal aspirate, are the diagnostic tools to identify SIBO. (27)

January 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

Treatment is directed by the “4 R” program we outlined in Part IV. (28) We Remove any offending agents, inflammatory food and drink (obviously), with special attention paid to proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Omeprazole, Nexium etc.). These suppress stomach acid, leading to achlorhydria. We recommend the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), or a low FODMAPS (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) diet . Next we Replace essential nutrients for proper utilization of foodstuffs. Digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid and bile salts are needed for proper digestion. We Restore the normal GI flora with probiotics containing bifidobacteria and lactobacillus dosed from 25 to 100 billion units a day, along with prebiotics and fiber to the rescue.

And we Repair the gastrointestinal lining with L-glutamine, zinc, omega 3 fish oil, vitamins A, C, E, slippery elm and aloe veracontaining supplements. Rifaximin is the antibiotic of choice to eliminate the infectious process. The relapse rate is as high as 44% (29), leading us to recommend the natural antimicrobials oregano oil, berberine, garlic, green tea, and thyme.

TRUST ME,

Written by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

H

ave you ever heard of astroturf? I’ll bet you thought it was only fake grass. Not in today’s world of media manipulation. Astroturf is a term in the advertising and public relations industry used to describe fake grass-roots movements. Clever, no? But very well-named and very effective, it’s a billion dollar industry that’s hidden from most of us. Let’s say you have a medical condition and are searching for a more effective treatment. You see a drug advertised on TV and of course there’s the ubiquitous catch phrase, “Ask Your Doctor.” You decide to do your own research first. You check out Facebook, Twitter, you go to Wikipedia, WebMD, you look at a nonprofit website, you do a Google search and you read an article in your favorite magazine. Most of it confirms that the new drug is effective. You run across a few negative comments which suggest a link to cancer but you dismiss them because the medical experts are calling that link a myth. They say that those who believe there’s a link to cancer are quacks, cranks, conspiracy theorists or are just woefully misinformed. You make an appointment with your doctor and learn that he/she recently attended a medical seminar which confirmed that the new drug is very effective, so you leave with some free samples (left by the drug rep) and a prescription (because many doctors will prescribe the most recently marketed drug). You feel like you’ve done your homework.

But what if, because of astroturf, your research was worthless? What if all that information was a carefully constructed narrative by unseen special interests designed to manipulate your opinion? The truth is, incredibly powerful propaganda and publicity forces often lead to a situation where we get very little of the real truth. Special interests (advertisers or political interests) are always on the lookout for ways to “spin” us while hiding their role. Hidden astroturf methods are now as effective (or more so) than the traditional lobbying (bribing) of Congress. There’s an entire industry built around these “false grassroots” dis-information methods. The astroturfers publish blogs, open Facebook or Twitter accounts, publish ads, send letters to the editor or simply post comments online to try to fool you into thinking that an independent person is speaking. The whole point of astroturf is to try to give the impression that there’s widespread support for or against an agenda or a product when in reality there’s not. Astroturf tries to manipulate you into buying something under false pretenses or manipulate you into changing your opinion. Sometimes the media’s use of astroturf gives us so much intentionally confusing and conflicting information that we throw up our hands and disregard all of it, including the truth. Astroturf can confuse the link between a certain medicine and a harmful side effect, for example the possible link between vaccines and Autism. How? By throwing a mass of conflicting paid-for studies, surveys and experts into the mix which confuses the truth beyond recognition.

And what about Wikipedia? It’s astroturf’s dream come true. Touted as the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit, the reality is very different. Anonymous Wikipedia editors control pages on behalf of special interests and forbid or reverse edits that go against their agenda. They regularly skew and delete information in blatant violation of Wikipedia’s own established “policies.” When Esther Hicks (author and channel of hundreds of CDs and books on the Law of Attraction) tried to correct errors on a Wikipedia article, she was never able to accomplish that. She was regarded by the people at Wikipedia to be “not enough of an authority” to change the article. Recently when a trustworthy source looked at medical conditions described on Wikipedia pages and compared the information to peer-reviewed published research, they found that Wikipedia contradicted worthwhile medical research over 90% of the time!

Now, looking at the “new drug” research you did, it turns out that the Facebook and Twitter accounts you found that were so positive were actually written by paid professionals hired by the drug company to promote the drug. The Wikipedia page had been monitored by an agenda editor who had also been paid by the drug company. That company also arranged to optimize Google search engine results so it was no accident that you “stumbled across” that positive non-profit site that had only positive comments for the new drug. That non-profit was secretly founded and funded by the drug company. And regarding that study mentioned on the web? Thoughts on

Synchronicity

Written by Andy Drymalski, Ed.D.

S

ynchronicity is an a non-causal but meaningful cooccurrence of events. It names and recognizes the fact that certain inner states or attitudes are reflected by outer world events. For example, if you are consciously pursuing a goal that is at odds with your true nature and calling in life, your inner psychological state will be characterized by conflict. You may have a dream of being chased, of driving out of control or of fighting with someone. But this inner psychological state will also be reflected synchronistically in your outer life. You will encounter an increasing number of obstacles and frustrations in your efforts to achieve your goal. The further your conscious goal(s) and attitudes stray from those of your core being and destiny, the more resistance you face in your outer and inner worlds. In Western society and culture we are very much attached to looking at the world in cause and effect terms. We tend to be very linear in our perspective. We focus on the chronology of events and the effects of preceding events on those that follow. The result is a very rationalistic, materialistic view of reality. A part of us may be uncomfortable with the otherworldly concept of synchronicity. We don’t understand such a viewpoint. It is unfamiliar and turns our cause and effect perspective on its head. We may want to label it a mystical or metaphysical conjecture. We may also resist it because it challenges our egocentric preference. 18

We like to see our lives as something we choose, and something we do to the world. From a strictly cause and effect viewpoint it is easy to strategize, plan, and enact the steps needed to reach our goals. Life is our nut to crack. If we know enough, plan well enough, and try hard enough we can accomplish anything, for the universe is nothing more than a gigantic pool table and we hold the cue stick. But synchronicity introduces a concept that defies our customary linear and logical ways of thinking and perceiving. It places cause and effect within a much larger, more mysterious, and humbling context. We are not alone. Our will is subject to a greater will. The universe has an interest in our attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. It comments on them. It delivers consequences. It rewards some and discourages others. And if we pay careful attention, we find that it is very consistent in the feedback it gives. Its feedback is particularized to each of us as unique individuals. Sometimes we don’t want the universe to be so intimately aware of our real attitudes, conflicts, or psychology. We are reluctant to acknowledge that our lives are the domain of a Will that is larger and more encompassing than our own. Synchronicities--along with dreams, physical and psychological symptoms—are part of the language of this higher Will, and more encompassing “Other” in our lives. January 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

Synchronicities are not causally driven, but reflect a psycho-physical foundation underlying material processes. Cause and effect reality, including the precepts of classical physics, exist within this larger context, but are secondary and subservient to it. To live life with an eye towards synchronicity is to be attentive to events that cluster together. If you have a particular attitude or goal that you are pursuing, and you find that things are falling into place around you — for instance, you feel energized yet centered, people are helpful or encouraging, the stoplight is green and your dreams serene — you have a grouping of events that suggest harmony with your current path. But if, on the other hand, a storm is moving in, and your car won’t start, or your child gets sick, and your dreams are conflicted, and your check just bounced, and you got in an argument with a friend, then you have a different collection of events suggesting your current attitude or goals are not supported by the universe. None of these things may be causally related to anything you’ve done, and yet there they are, popping up in your life one after the other until you change course.

I especially like this dream for the way it so boldly reveals the

What research in the areas of quantum physics and depth psychology is revealing is that the processes of cause and effect themselves rest upon a psycho-physical substrate. The universe is not a machine or mechanical clock which can only move in fixed and predictable ways. Rather, it is an organic, living being, an evolving and dynamic process which is actually more meaningand values-based, meaning- and values-driven, than we ever before realized. The universe is not value-neutral. It has a personality, or psychology. And the laws we seem to discover are not quite as immutable or defining as we tend to think. They wax and wane, arise and disappear, like mist over an ocean of mystery. See ad this page. T

he Earth is supporting humanity’s awakening to the rediscovery of ancient and forgotten healing arts, such as the utilization of crystals. Reverence and use of crystals goes back to the dawning of civilization. They have been connected with specific parts of the body and its organs for thousands of years. As members of the mineralogical kingdom, crystals are universal energies that allow one to contact and synthesize these individual energies for healing and integration. Each crystal contains their own “personality” and can be utilized in unique ways to facilitate healing. Crystals are nature’s gift to man and are found in all shapes, sizes, colors and composition. They each have a unique vibrational resonance due to their varying mineral contents, their inherent geometry and the color frequency they emit, making them powerful healing tools. Crystal healing is a method of healing – crystals or gemstones are placed on or around the body, on the chakras (spiritual energy centers), used as reflexology tools to stimulate points on the feet, worn like jewelry, or can be placed in and around one’s home to enhance energy. They heal holistically on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels, helping to direct the flow of energy to a particular part of the body, restore balance, and ultimately cleanse by releasing and clearing blocked energy. Chakras (pronounced “shock-ras”) are Sanskrit for wheels of rotating energy flows in the ethereal body. They are in related locations within the physical body along the spinal column starting

from the base of the spine, up to the crown, or top of the head. There are seven major chakras within the body where the energy flows intersect. The health of an area of the physical body and the condition of its associated chakra are interdependent, so when the chakras are blocked or cleared, the body’s state will mirror that.

orangeelian carn

Each chakra corresponds with different states of consciousness, developmental stages of life, archetypal elements, body functions, colors and sounds. Crystals are capable of interacting with these energy centers within the human body because they are electromagnetic conductors that work through resonance and vibrational sound. Each crystal and gemstone embodies certain energies, colors, and elements that mirror the qualities needed to facilitate clearing and raising chakra vibrations. They have been used to realign subtle energies and dissolve dis-ease by helping to get to the root of the issue. Wearing crystals and gems used to be a royal or priestly experience, but is now something we can all receive benefit from, even by just having one in close proximity or learning to meditate with them. There are so many varieties to choose from that help facilitate different functions and healing intents. • Boost your energy with Orange Carnelian • Attract wealth and reenergize with Citrine

MS

(multiple sclerosis) has long been considered, at least in part, an “auto-immune disease.” That means it is caused by the immune system attacking different parts of the body, thereby causing an inflammatory reaction.

normal bacterial populations. Evidence continues to accumulate showing a connection between these two factors and a growing list of chronic degenerative diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, depression, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease and now MS.

Those of you that have been following my articles about leaky gut syndrome will find it no surprise to hear that recent research has found a link between MS and the kind of microbes that are found in the gut.

The gut flora of MS patients contains microbes that cause inflammation and MS symptoms. This same flora lacks the bacteria that control inflammation. The same thing is found in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. In past articles I have discussed the connection between gut health and

22

Wouldn’t it be amazing if the first step in treating these conditions would be prescribing a leaky gut protocol and heavy doses of a probiotic along with a change in diet? What would be even more amazing is to see these poor suffering patients’ symptoms improve or even disappear entirely? Who were those “quacks” that were condemned for decades for saying that true health begins in the gut? It turns out that way back in 1943, Alexander Fleming, MD, the discoverer of penicillin, was the first one to warn that antibiotic abuse would come back to destroy our health!

What this research revealed is that mice develop an MS-like disease with MS symptoms such as nerve damage, weakness, decreased nerve conduction and all the symptoms of MS when their gut flora is altered. After this discovery, a study on 250 human patients began. It turns out that the gut microbes in MS patients are very different from those without MS.

colon of a person suffering from one of the previously mentioned conditions.

It’s up to us to decide if we want to take advantage of this new/old information. Speaking for the Joint Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis, Sushrut Jangi, MD, in an interview, said “it is hard to say that abnormal gut flora causes MS, but there is a correlation.” A very telling statement by a conventional physician! Some conventional physicians are even starting to talk about a treatment that makes almost everyone cringe … fecal transplants! That is an implant of fecal material from a healthy person into the

hen Joe Dispenza was 23 years old, he was run over and dragged down the street by an SUV while participating in a Palm Springs triathlon, creating severe compression fractures in six vertebrae. He was told he needed to have several surgeries including having a Harrington rod implanted in his back, otherwise he’d be partially paralyzed and have to live with chronic pain for the rest of his life. He already had a successful chiropractic business and maybe because he was young and bold, or maybe because he had a deep belief that he could heal himself, he decided against surgery.

He believes that there’s an intelligence, an invisible consciousness, within each one of us. It supports, maintains, protects and heals us every moment. It creates almost 100 trillion specialized cells, keeps our hearts beating hundreds of thousands of times per day and can organize hundreds of thousands of chemical reactions in a single cell in every second – among many other amazing functions. He reasoned at the time that if this intelligence was real and if it willfully, mindfully and lovingly demonstrated such amazing abilities, maybe he could take his attention off his external world and begin to go within and connect with it – developing a relationship with it. So against the advice of his medical team, he left the hospital and went to live with two good friends. He needed

full time care, but he also decided to start each day reconstructing his spine, vertebra by vertebra. In this way he would show this consciousness, if it was paying attention to his efforts, what he wanted. He knew that it would demand his absolute presence in the moment – not thinking about or regretting the past, worrying about the future, obsessing about present conditions or focusing on his pain or symptoms. He reasoned that because consciousness is awareness, awareness is paying attention and paying attention is being present and noticing … this consciousness would be aware of when he was present and when he wasn’t. He would have to be totally present when he interacted with that mind; his presence would have to match its presence, his will would have to match its will and his mind would have to match its mind.

So for two hours twice a day, he went within and began creating a picture of his intended result: a totally healed spine. It wasn’t easy because he found himself spending too much time thinking about what he didn’t want rather than what he did want. But every time he lost his attention, he would start from the beginning and do the whole scheme of imagery all over again. After six weeks he was able to make it through the reconstruction process without having to stop and start over from the beginning. That day something clicked. He was totally present in mind and body. After that it started to get easier and he began to notice some significant changes in his body. At nine and a half weeks after the accident he got up and walked back into his life, without a body cast or surgeries. At ten weeks he started seeing patients again and now almost 30 years after the accident, he has hardly ever had back pain. But he was a changed man – things that had been important to him before the accident now had little meaning. He began studying spontaneous remissions and found that in each miraculous case there was a strong element of mind. This book explains what Joe Dispenza has learned about the mind’s ability to heal the body. Along the way he has studied quantum physics, neuroscience, biology, psychology, hypnosis and behavioral conditioning. The placebo effect takes place when you heal because you believe something is healing you – even though it’s only a sugar pill. Because we’ve been conditioned to believe that healing comes from outside of us, from an

authority figure in a white coat, from drugs or from surgery, then that’s what’s real for us. But the dozens of examples in this book and the thousands of examples in other books, show that our minds are incredibly powerful, and can create health or illness, depending on our conditioning and on what we believe right now about ourselves and our abilities. Subjects covered in this book include a history of the placebo, the placebo effect in both brain and body, how thoughts change the brain and the body, suggestibility, attitudes, beliefs and

perceptions. The science explained here is current and very understandable. Additional chapters cover the quantum mind, stories of personal transformation, meditation preparation, becoming what Dr. Joe calls ‘supernatural,’ and scripts for two very powerful, unusual meditations. Dr. Dispenza has taken what worked for him, blended it with what he has learned during the past 30 years about the mind interacting with the body and woven it into a powerful book that can be of use to anyone who wants to heal. He is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself and Evolve Your Brain, has a passion for teaching others how to use the latest discoveries from neuroscience and quantum physics to reprogram their brains, to heal illness and to lead more fulfilled lives. He is one of the experts featured in the film What the BLEEP Do We know!? He currently runs an integrated health and chiropractic clinic near Olympia, Washington and lectures or teaches workshops all over the world. This book is available online or from your local bookstore.

comfort food for many, especially when we’re not feeling well, chicken soup is a staple in many kitchens. Whether you like it with noodles or rice or dumplings, there are as many different variations on this hearty soup as there are chili or

potato salad recipes. My taste buds get bored fairly easily, so I’m always looking for alternative ways to prepare a good spicedup chicken soup. Here are two of my favorites, with options and suggestions for making them meat-free as well.

AGUADITO DE POLLO (Peruvian Chicken Soup) Recipe derived from http://perudelights.com/aguadito-de-pollo-chicken-soup-to-warm-your-body/ It seems people either love cilantro or hate it. I’m of the former camp, so this is one of my all-time favorite soups. Very savory without being salty, it has a great, full flavor. Though it’s not designed as a main course, it’s definitely hearty enough for the job. I prepared this dish with organic chicken, but it already has so many vegetables, it’s easy to replace the meat with some of your own favorite veggies, and enjoy a hearty Peruvian vegetable soup. Going back to November’s chickpea-inspired recipes, I bet they would be a great protein replacement in this soup. INGREDIENTS • 4 small organic chicken breasts (optional – replace with your favorite vegetables or beans, if desired) • Salt and pepper • 3 tbsp olive oil • ½ yellow onion, finely chopped • 4 garlic cloves, minced

28

• 2 fresh aji amarillo, chopped, or • 3 tablespoons paste (this can be difficult to find locally – we buy ours online) • 3 cups cilantro leaves • 4 tsp Better Than Bouillon • 4 cups water • 1 bottle black beer (optional - Black Butte or Guinness will work great) • ½ bell pepper, chopped • 1 cup carrot, diced • 1 cup corn kernels • ½ cup green peas • ½ cup long grain rice • 4 organic sierra gold potatoes, peeled and chopped DIRECTIONS Sauté the chicken (if using) with onion and garlic, in olive oil. Mix the cilantro leaves and aji amarillo with ¼ cup water in a food processor until smooth; add to the sautéd mixture,

along with the bouillon, beer (if using), corn, peas, peppers and carrots. Bring it all to a boil, turn the heat to low, cover with a lid, and simmer for 30 minutes. Add rice, and after 15 minutes add potatoes. Put the lid back on and simmer until the potatoes are tender and the rice is cooked. If the soup is too thick, add more water and bouillon. Taste for seasoning, and serve.

F REQUENTLY A SKED Q UESTIONS

About Back Pain

Q

I was shoveling snow outside for hours, and now I seem to have a persistent back problem, where I didn’t have one before. I find myself reluctant to do more than lay on the couch. Could I have done some permanent damage?

A

Shoveling snow is brutal on the back. Next to a garbage collector who has to lift, twist and throw with his back, snow shoveling is a close second. For one, you are cold and not warmed up. Two, you are bending over and lifting something that is not close to your body. Three, if the snow is wet, like snow typically is in Nevada, each shovel full of snow can be 30 lbs. This is a Nevada prescription for back pain. Back and neck pain can then cause many fears and doubts to race through your mind. The fear of the unknown can stop you from doing anything physical for fear of hurting yourself. So, you do less and less. This lack of activity then causes muscles and tendons in your back to become weaker and less flexible, so they are susceptible to strain from even simple things, like bending over to pick up your child.

30

Since you didn’t have a problem before, and you haven’t mentioned pain or weakness into your legs, there is a good chance you just have a nice back strain. This can feel like occasional spasms that lock up your back with excruciating back pain. The good news is that back strain doesn’t require surgery, and will typically respond to some anti inflammatories like Advil or Nuprin. Next, you need to start with some special stretches designed for the back. You can find them in our free Home Remedy Book, or at SpineNevada.com. These exercises will begin to loosen up tight tissues and make your back stronger, more flexible and resistant to future strain. Start moving with some walks in the neighborhood. Lastly, we recommend you retire the snow shovel. Spending the money to buy a snowblower may cost you $200, but a trip to the doctor can cost that as well. — James P. Murphy, MD Physical Medicine

Q

I fell on my back while I was skiing and now my back hurts? What could be causing that, and what symptoms need to be seen by a doctor? Is extreme pain an indicator of when I should see a doctor?

A

Unlike other orthopedic injury where a fracture will be excruciating, in the realm of spine, pain can be a misleading indicator of the seriousness of a back problem. Here’s why: A back spasm will drop you to your knees in extreme agony. However, a spasm is typically from a muscle strain which is never a surgical problem. In fact, with some anti-inflammatories, ice, a day or two of rest, then a walk, maybe some physical therapy, you can be back to normal. But, any time you have pain that does not go away on its own over three or four days, then its time to see a doctor. With that said, because you mentioned that you fell which then caused the pain symptom, this is a red flag signal for a physician because you could have fractured a spinal vertebra, which can be very serious. If you notice that you are unable to walk without raising your toe, even though there is no pain involved, that is also an emergency red flag symptom. The general rule of thumb: if you have pain localized in the back or neck area, it may be a soft tissue/muscle strain issue. If the pain, or numbness, or weakness, radiates into an arm and hand, or leg and foot, that is a serious symptom that needs to be seen within a week to prevent permanent problems. Symptoms for back and neck pain are complex. Visit our Internet site at SpineNevada.com which has a symptoms chart for neck and back symptoms. — Stefan V. Franciosa, DO, MBA Pain Management and Radiology

Q

I’m getting ready for a winter camping trip, the first one in several years. I have had occasional bouts of back pain in the past and I’ll be spending a fair amount of time on a snowmobile. Is this something you would not recommend?

A

We like patients to stay active. Life isn’t a dress rehearsal for something else. And getting out doors in the winter to hike is a great way to stay in shape. But then again, the impact of a snowmobile going over rough terrain can also spell problems with certain back problems. If your back problem is related to muscle strain, the snowmobile shouldn’t be too problematic. But if you have a herniated disc, or a spinal fracture with instability, the jackhammer effect of the snowmobile could cause problems — especially if you fall off of it. The best advice is to be prudent with your outdoor activity, and avoid trailblazing and risky areas that could cause a spill. – Edward C. Perry, MD Spinal Neurosurgeon
