ince it’s that time of year (Valentine’s Day), I thought I’d share a potentially helpful bit of information: it’s really difficult to kiss in a kayak. You can test this theory yourself, or you can just take my word for it. My husband and I are avid flatwater kayakers, even having gone so far as to build two custom wooden boats in our garage a couple years back. For me, kayaking is the perfect combination of a physical and spiritual experience. In 2009, my then-boyfriend proposed to me on a secluded branch of the Cosumnes River, near Galt, CA. We’d been paddling all morning and were

currently being hollered at by an indignant osprey with a fish in its talons when he paddled up next to me and proposed. The “kissing in a kayak” challenge was then discovered, as we both nearly ended up in the water. A little over a year later, we completely surprised our wedding guests by paddling in to our ceremony, held at Indian Creek Reservoir, in Markleeville, CA. Some of our more romantic moments have happened while kayaking. Also some of our most scary, exciting, dramatic and awe-inspiring. While we both enjoy kayaking Tahoe, my favorite time to paddle it is in winter. As you can imagine, kayaking Tahoe in the winter requires a bit more preparation than

in summer. Thankfully, my husband is a grown-up boy scout, living by the “be prepared” motto. Below are some personal tips, as well as some from experts, regarding how to stay safe while playing in the cold this winter.

1.

No cotton clothing! Try to wear wool (my personal favorite, over nylon or polyester). While wool doesn’t wick moisture away like polyester or nylon, it will stay warm when wet and is also flame retardant if you’ll be around a campfire. A dry suit is preferable when kayaking Tahoe in the winter, but you can get by with a good wet suit, so long as you layer the appropriate clothing over the top of it. continued list on page 5

hinking about the month of February has me thinking about LOVE! Whether or not Valentine’s Day is a ‘man made’ holiday, it is a wonderful excuse to celebrate LOVE. The mere word evokes so many feelings it is hard to define or even express in words. Love can mean a dizzying array of things to each of us … words that come to mind are, acceptance, giving, gratitude, openness, joy, excitement, purpose, I could go on and on. Perhaps it’s best summarized in Gandhi’s quote: “Where there is love, there is life” When we think of love we may think of only romantic love. How about the idea to look for ways to express love in all aspects of our life? How can we truly come from a place of love in our daily activities? Would doing so contribute to more joy in your life? I would say a resounding YES!! This month, let’s practice showing love as we go about our day and experience the joy it will bring to you and others. February’s issue is full of valuable information to help you improve your health and increase your well being. We have two very informative articles related to natural cures for Cancer, our continuation of the thyroid series with a focus on adrenal health, chronic pain, new information on sleep aids, and some very keen insights into how chiropractic health can help with autism. Even information to get you ‘in the mood’ naturally! We invite you to enjoy our February issue and share it with your family and friends. Here’s to LOVE !!

2.

Avoid sweating. Try to be aware of your body heat when you are exerting yourself in cold weather. Dress in layers that you can remove when too warm, as sweating will also increase your body’s heat loss. If you do find yourself sweating, be sure to stay hydrated. If you don’t have water with you, make sure to melt snow before you eat it, as eating cold snow will lower your body temperature – a dangerous situation if you’re already sweating. Carry a couple plastic baggies with you. They don’t take much room, and you can put snow in them and use your own body heat to melt it.

3. 4.

Don’t ignore shivering. It’s your body’s way of telling you that you’re losing too much heat and you need to find some warmth soon. Wear mittens. If they don’t impede your activity, mittens will keep your hands warmer than gloves. Find it tough to paddle your kayak with mittens on? Try pogies (shown in the kayaking photo accompanying this article) – they will keep your hands dry and warm, and are easy to get into and out of (if, like us, you are often taking photos while on the water).

5.

Protect your lips. You can find a great recipe for homemade natural lip balm at http://www. diynatural.com/homemade-lip-balmand-natural-lip-care.

6.

Treat your skin. Winter is tough on your skin and your face often takes the brunt of it. Give your face a treat after a day of mountain play – find great recipes for a natural mask, scrub and moisturizer at www. organicauthority.com/3-diy-natural-skincare-recipes-to-get-glowing-skin-evenin-winter.

7.

Share your plans. Make sure someone knows where you’re going and what time you expect to return. That way if something goes wrong, someone is watching out for you and, in our case, any fur-kids you might have back at home.

Healthy Beginnings • February 2016

8.

Don’t go out alone. It’s best to have a buddy in case something catastrophic happens, but if you do head out alone, be sure to heed the prior tip.

Letting Someone Know Your Plans

9.

Take care of your eyes. Whether on the snow or water in winter, it’s likely to be harder on your eyes than you realize at the time. Snow and ice reflect 80% of the sun’s UV rays. Your cornea can even freeze in extreme cold without eye protection. Look for sunglasses that block UV (UVB is more dangerous than UVA) rays, are shatterproof, are polarized (if around reflective surfaces a lot like water), and wrap around your face – the more coverage, the better the protection. I hope some of this information is helpful during our “el nino” snow year. Do you have any safety tips or romantic winter stories to share? Please email us at editor@hbmag or post on our Facebook page at facebook.com/HBMagazine. We’d love to hear from you!

ack and neck pain is very common worldwide. When not properly treated, back pain can affect work performance and even become disabling. In the United States alone, an estimated 149 million work days are lost each year due to low back pain.1 Total costs are estimated to be $100 to 200 billion a year (two-thirds of the amount is due to lost wages and reduced productivity). 2, 3 It is not surprising that many people chronically wander in and out of doctors’ offices and have enough pain pills in their medicine cabinets to rival the supply of a pharmacy. Why is this? Back pain isn’t a disease; instead it’s a compilation of symptoms. And sadly — the origin of spine symptoms can be difficult to pinpoint. back and neck pain requires a specialized approach

Evaluation of back and neck pain requires a physician experienced in diagnosing spinal conditions. There’s good news for people struggling with back, neck or joint pain though. If you are experiencing spine or pain symptoms, no matter how complex— SpineNevada can help. SpineNevada Minimally Invasive Spine Institute takes a team approach to spine care. It includes the expertise of specialists in the nonsurgical management of back pain, spine-specialized physical therapists and fellowship-trained spine neurosurgeons.

BACK and

NECK pain

how will your back or neck pain be diagnosed at a spine center of excellence

The evaluation of back and neck pain should begin with a detailed work-up including medical history and a physical examination. Your medical history helps the doctor understand your back and neck pain and the influence of your lifestyle on your pain. During your physical exam, your physician will try to pinpoint the source of pain. Simple tests for flexibility and muscle strength may also be conducted. Next, diagnostic tests may be ordered to confirm the location and source of your pain. Instability occurs when vertebral bodies slip. When this happens, nerves can be impinged, which can lead to symptoms, such as pain. Some instability occurs only during spine bending. When bending triggers instability, it can be painful. Similarly, some instability occurs only when you are standing or in a weight-bearing position. For conditions that involve nerve root compression, spinal stenosis, or disc bulge, pain is more often felt when the patient is standing or in a weight-bearing position than when lying down. However, if a patient avoids painful positions during testing, the surgeon may never know instability is present. New innovations in spine motion imaging are now available. Continued on page 8

back pain isn’t a disease; instead it’s a compilation of symptoms.

let’s look at two new exciting options in spinal motion imaging

Vertebral Motion Analysis, or VMA. This is an FDA-cleared system for assessing lumbar and cervical spinal motion. It is an updated method of assessing spinal motion compared to the standard flexion/extension bending x-rays that are currently used to assess spinal motion, including instability. SpineNevada InMotion Diagnostics is excited about being one of the first in the country to offer this new Spine Motion Imaging option. 5 highlights of vma for diagnosing spine conditions:

The VMA offers a new diagnostic tool that provides additional imaging data to surgeons, which may help him/her to locate the source of your spinal issues. The VMA motion test provides more data than ever before by taking hundreds of x-ray type pictures of your spine while you move in a gentle, controlled manner to create a video. It may provide more accurate motion measurements to help surgeons in diagnosing your unique condition, which may lead to surgeons choosing potentially helpful treatment options. Open and Weight-bearing MRI. SpineNevada’s InMotion MRI is the G-Scan Brio by Esaote and specifically designed to offer the highest level of examination of musculoskeletal conditions. 4 highlights of inmotion mri for diagnosing spin and joint conditions

Open InMotion MRI is weight-bearing, this means the patient’s position becomes an integral part of the exam’s outcome. This is particularly important for diagnosing degenerative disc disease and other musculoskeletal conditions of the knee and hip.

8

Since the force of gravity generates bio-mechanical changes in anatomy, MR imaging in a natural, stand-up position allows physicians to attain important additional information compared to traditional MRI. Studies reveal 20-30% more findings with weight-bearing MRI imaging than traditional non-weight bearing MRI. There are tremendous advances taking place in medicine today, but in order to benefit from them, it’s important for you as the healthcare consumer to take an active role. The best healthcare will not find you; you have to seek it out!

ARE YOU THYROID DEFICIENT?

Part 7

Thyroid Disease and the Adrenal Connection Written by Dr. William N. Clearfield, D.O. “Again with the thyroid?”

The Autoimmune-Adrenal-Thyroid Connection

“Dad.”

n 1881, George Miller Beard, M.D., a neurologist and graduate from the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons, described a condition based on excess “nervous energy.” Constant over stimulation of the nervous system from the “modern, sedate, new fangled American lifestyle,” complete with indoor electric lighting and plumbing, resulted in a burnout or nervous exhaustion condition he termed “neurasthenia.”

“Enough already. Write something else.” “But, but...There’s more.” “More? I should know from this? In my day, you measured one thing, TSH. If it’s high, it’s low. If it’s low, it’s high. Everything is upside down. You give one thing, synthroid. None of this fancy, schmancy finding root causes. You make things too complicated.” “Do you want the problem fixed, or covered up?” “Ah. Cover it up. It’s easier.” “I’m only halfway through. We did ‘leaky gut,’ heavy metals and infections. This month adrenal fatigue, next iodine, and, in March, nutrient deficiencies.” “Adrenal fatigue?” Dad said. “Another one of your crazy ideas.” “It’s real,” I replied. “Oh sure, you told me, Teddy Roosevelt had it. I read it in a history book. He would have been famous for taking San Juan Hill, but he was too tired to get out of bed that morning. No?” “It’s real and you know it,” I replied. “It can be measured. And yes Teddy Roosevelt and many others had it too.” “Adrenal fatigue,” Dad hooted. “I hear myself now talking to the other Mr. Roosevelt. I’m so sorry Mr. President. I know you want us to storm the beaches at Normandy but I don’t get up till noon. I’m taking it easy today. I have a condition you know. Thanks for thinking of me.” “Dad.” “And this has what to do with the thyroid?”

Healthy Beginnings • February 2016

I

Symptoms of neurasthenia included nervous dyspepsia, insomnia, hysteria, hypochondria, asthma, sick-headache, skin rashes, hay fever, premature baldness, inebriety, hot and cold flashes, nervous exhaustion, brain-collapse and forms of elementary insanity. The best educated and most sophisticated Americans, President Theodore Roosevelt and the western artist Frederic Remington, were best-known celebrity sufferers from this malady Dr. Beard termed “neurasthenia.” The “cure” was a withdrawal from modern life, rest and a less hectic lifestyle. Critics, (not unlike Dad), noted that urban life in the late nineteenth century had produced a “gaggle of pathetic, pampered, physically and morally enfeebled 97 pound weaklings, unworthy successors to the stalwart Americans who had fought the Civil War and tamed a continent.” (1) Physicians jumped on this “nervous energy” diagnosis, relieving them of more vigilant medical inquiry. Early signs of tuberculosis, heart failure and epilepsy were chalked up to ‘neurasthenia,’ and when later discovered to be in error, gave fuel to those who saw this “disease” as a sham. Though no longer used to describe any medical condition, neurasthenia is remarkably similar to a very real condition with objective diagnostic criteria known as “Adrenal Fatigue.” Continued on page 10

TIRED? CRAVING SUGAR OR SALT?

It Could Be Cortisol Deficiency. Take the Quiz

Adrenal Fatigue is the end product of constant unremitting stress, as experienced by nearly everyone in today’s society, hijacking normal hormonal responses, and deploying one’s resources to combat the “evil” of the moment. The adrenal glands, pea sized organs, sit on top of the kidneys and produce the “fight or flight” hormone cortisol, the body’s defense mechanism to danger. In response to provocations or stress, they regulate blood pressure, electrolytes, blood sugar, and allow for adequate immune and hormonal responses. In an “emergency,” the adrenal glands produce enormous quantities of cortisol. In an ideal world stress is rare, and when present, is experienced in discrete “packets.” The ‘crisis’ of the moment is resolved quickly, and the adrenals “wash out” the cortisol, resetting to “normal.”

In our decidedly non-ideal world, stresses, like a bad divorce, linger. They often worsen and newer stresses arise, producing even more cortisol, adding to the problem. A state of chronically elevated cortisol develops, driving the adrenals to exhaustion, like flogging an overworked horse.

Call Dr. William Clearfield today. Accurate diagnosis and treatment is essential for a happy, healthy life.

The result is a neurasthenic “burnout” situation. Long-term exposure to abnormally high levels of cortisol takes over the entire functioning of the adrenal gland. The other functions of the adrenals, smooth digestion, adequate immune and thyroid hormone production are put on a ‘temporary” hold.(2) The thyroid is exquisitely impacted by the constant flood and eventual depletion of stress hormones. As with gluten, heavy metals and infectious diseases, the body unwittingly defers thyroid production to combat the immediate danger. (See Healthy Beginnings November 2015 through January 2016). Chronically elevated cortisol levels release inflammatory cells into the bloodstream, desensitizing thyroid receptors to thyroid hormone. Like a diabetic who doesn’t respond to insulin, the thyroid hormone, while adequate in quantity, is unable to be utilized.

vitamin

The enormous clinical usefulness of vitamin C remains underappreciated. This is partially due to its classification as a vitamin. A strict interpretation of the definition of vitamin C can even support the argument that vitamin C is not a vitamin at all. Ultimately it becomes apparent to the researcher that vitamin C is the single most important nutrient substance for a healthy body. Even today, conventional medical textbooks state that “no specific treatment is available for polio.” This is incredible because on June 10, 1949, Frederick R. Klenner, M.D. presented a summary of his work on polio to the Annual Session of the American Medical Association. He published a landmark article demonstrating that he cured 60 out of 60 cases of polio in children. These children were proven by lab tests and symptoms to have active polio. One young girl had even already developed paralysis of her legs and she fully recovered after treatment. They were treated with IV “frequent massive doses” of 6,000 to 20,000mg vitamin C in a 24hour period. His report was little heeded and quickly forgotten. Since then, high dose intravenous vitamin C has shown itself to be effective at treating virtually all viral diseases from hepatitis to shingles and HIV.

The other side of this incredible information is that there has never been a toxic dose of vitamin C discovered. Even the most common misconception about vitamin C causing kidney stones can be prevented by proper hydration. In the past century, between 50,000 to 100,000 studies have demonstrated the benefits of vitamin C therapy. Yet, it continues to be virtually ignored by conventional medicine. lbert Szent-Gyorgyi, M.D., PhD asserted that energy (electron) exchange, arguably life’s most important form of cellular communication, can only occur when there is an imbalance of electrons between and among molecules. This imbalance of electrons causes the natural flow of electrons, a biological form of electricity, throughout the healthy body.

references

Vitamin C, although possessing other important qualities, appears to be a most important stimulus to this flow of electricity. Furthermore, when this electron flow is impaired, there is a need for more vitamin C to help remedy this impairment.

Since poor electron flow throughout the body’s tissues appears to cause or be associated with disease, this also means that there is typically a vitamin C deficiency whenever the body is diseased. Just as dehydration requires water, poor electron flow (a primary characteristic of the diseased state) requires vitamin C. This will always apply, even if the deficiency was not necessarily involved in the development of a specific diseased state.

Here is a list of the top-10 natural food sources of vitamin C: Bell Peppers (especially yellow) • Guavas Dark Green Leafy Vegetables (especially kale) Kiwi • Broccoli • Strawberries • Oranges Tomatoes • Peas • Papaya And remember, if you can’t find it fresh, get frozen, as most fruits and vegetables are frozen at peak ripeness.

THE UNTOLD

TRUTH

About Sleeping Pills: Risks and Treatment Options Written by Ruth Gentry, Ph.D. Clinical Health Psychologist

P

oor sleep, or chronic insomnia, which affects 20-30% of Americans, is a rampant problem, with more Americans turning to prescription sleeping pills than ever before. Physicians often recommend a minimum of 7 hours of sleep on a regular basis for good health, but a new study is challenging this notion. According to the study, the sleep habits of remote hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, Namibia and Bolivia, whose sleep patterns are believed to reflect those of ancient humans, showed that they slept around 6.5 hours, sometimes less, per night without daily naps. Even though they were sleeping less than the recommended number, the hunter-gatherers in the study were relatively healthy with minimal sleep problems. This obviously challenges the idea that it may be unhealthy for us to sleep less than 7 hours. Pharmaceutical companies continually report exponential growth in the number of sleep aid prescriptions filled each year, such as Ambien, Lunesta, Sonata and Restoril. The concern is not only the fact that sleep aids have side effects such as memory loss, drowsiness, dizziness and loss of coordination and balance (especially in elderly), but in some cases they may only work slightly better than a placebo or pill with no active drug. For example, Ambien and Lunesta have been shown to help people fall asleep only about 20 minutes

Namibia and Bolivia, whose sleep patterns are believed to reflect those of ancient humans, showed that they slept around 6.5 hours, sometimes less, per night without daily naps.

and 19 minutes faster, respectively, than a placebo and only add 3-34 minutes to total sleep time .The newest sleep drug on the market, Belsomra, helped people fall asleep just 6 minutes faster on average, and sleep only 16 minutes longer than those who got a placebo. Their effectiveness is so limited that the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) no longer considers them a first-choice treatment. Instead, the AASM considers the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) as the leading treatment. CBT-I is a non-medication approach that goes beyond general sleep hygiene such as avoiding alcohol, not watching television in bed, etc., and addresses the key behaviors and thoughts that can interfere with sleep. Research has shown that the use of CBT-I has equal or greater effectiveness when compared to medications in the short term, but over time CBT-I has been shown to be more effective and a much healthier treatment. As such, people often no longer need medications following treatment, thereby eliminating all potential drug side effects. Sleeping aids should generally be used for short-term use (few weeks), but people are often using them for years, thus becoming dependent on them and increasing their risk of other health problems. Growing research is showing that people taking sleeping aids for long periods of time may have an increased risk of developing cancer, and are far more likely to die prematurely than those who don’t take sleep aids . Furthermore, there are alarming concerns for certain sleep medications called benzodiazepines (Ativan, Xanax, Valium and Klonopin), which are associated with higher rates of emergency room visits due to falls, fractures, auto accidents and also higher rates of Alzheimer’s disease . Often people aren’t told about these risk factors from their physicians, and as a result they are generally unaware of the long-term risks. Given these increasing risk factors, I’m concerned for the future of sleep treatment if we continue to prescribe at such alarming rates. Rather, my hope is that we can help educate people more about the risks of sleep medications, and provide them better options such as CBT-I. In reality, it is sleep quality that is important, not sleep quantity and resorting to sleeping aids.

CANCER-FRE

By Bill Henderson and Dr. Carlos Garcia Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

T

his book tells you exactly what to do if you have been diagnosed with cancer. If you’re not comfortable with the conventional treatment for cancer (chemotherapy, radiation and sometimes surgery) you owe it to yourself to research alternative treatments. This is the most comprehensive book on the market if you’re serious about curing your cancer. It gives hundreds of sources (websites, scientific studies, books, videos and articles) by alternative doctors and researchers all over the world who have spent decades studying different kinds of cancer, successfully treating patients after researching supplements, herbs and natural chemical compounds. Many of these doctors own clinics in other countries. A few own clinics here in the States, but it is difficult here because the FDA, the AMA and Big Pharma want the American public to continue to believe that chemotherapy, radiation and/or surgery are the only “treatments” for cancer.

Actually there are dozens of actual cures for cancer, depending on the type. So why don’t we know about these? Because cancer is big business. It’s been estimated that one cancer patient is worth more than a million dollars to the medical profession. How could that be? Well first there’s your GP, who refers you to specialists, then the blood tests, the X-rays, the MRIs, the PET or CT scans, possibly mammograms or additional specialty tests for specific suspected types of cancer, maybe thermography, more specialists, more blood tests, possibly another MRI, then there’s the biopsies, the chemo treatments (terribly expensive), the radiation, possibly surgery which will certainly involve more tests, plus the hospital costs with all the varied specialists and medications that a hospital stay entails, etc. Cancer is big business. However, if you make a choice to go the natural route you can spend between $100-$200 a month on the right food and supplements and according to the literature, have a much better chance of healing yourself. A study concluded in 2004 involving thousands of Americans and Australians showed that the five year survival rate for cancer patients who chose chemotherapy/radiation were: Australians, 2.9% and for Americans, 2.1% In other words, the failure rate was over 97% for both groups. Other studies done since then have borne this out. If your doctor told you a different percentage, they may be quoting the six month survival rate, not the 5-year survival rate. The 7-year failure rate for people who opted for chemotherapy and radiation is even worse: 99%. If you find this astounding, I invite you to do your own research. Now, if you start researching alternative cures for cancer, you’ll find hundreds of books and articles on this subject. It can get very confusing because different protocols are effective for different types of cancer. However, there are some things that all people who survive cancer do, and that’s what this book tells you – while also giving you information and testimonials regarding other protocols. Bill Henderson and Dr. Garcia make it very simple – just follow the rules. It’s simple but it’s not easy. You can never go back to eating the way you did before. But if you want to live, to thrive and be healthy, then for you it will be worth it. This protocol is not only for cancer sufferers, but for many people who have a chronic degenerative disease. Many of these ailments are caused by diet and lifestyle. You’ve heard that before, it’s not news to you. This book tells you WHY you have cancer or a degenerative disease and tells you what to do about it. Bill Henderson also has a counseling service. He realizes that there is so much information out there, it’s confusing to know which protocol to choose. You choose, but with a mentor it makes it easier to make the right decision. For $195 you get an initial hour-long consultation plus access to Bill for six months, to ask any

The Problem of

egocentricity & the Wisdom of A.A.

Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD

I

t is a fundamental rule of the psyche that if the ego does not serve the Self, or God, it will inevitably serve only itself. Just as the gravity of the sun holds the planets to their orbits, the Self is meant to be the anchoring center of the total personality. But in a state of egocentricity, as the word implies, the ego makes itself the center of the universe. Rather than being an instrument of the creative and healing energy of the Self, the egocentric ego hijacks the personality, redirecting its energy for the attainment of its own goals. We are all by nature somewhat egocentric in our view of the world and approach to life. However, in a situation of malignant or pathological egocentricity, the ego has become especially stubborn and focused on its own goals and perspectives. In this situation your egocentricity has become more entrenched, pervasive, and heavily defended. You have become so attached to your own desires and viewpoints that responsiveness and service to the Self and God is essentially eclipsed. From a psychological perspective, the ego has gone rogue. It has set up its own “government” within the personality, imprisoned the soul, and commandeered the personality to its own ends. Malignant egocentricity is like a disease, or cancer, that parasitizes the psyche. Most alcoholics and addicts suffer from malignant egocentricity, for they attempt to control their psyche through their chemical (or behavior) of choice. The addicting substance/behavior turns the user into its slave. They are usually chasing their next high and may steal, lie, cheat, manipulate, and coerce to attain it. At the very least, they compulsively use their money, time,

18

energy and body in irresponsible ways. These behaviors only add to the addict’s egocentric tendencies. The denial of an individual’s more instinctual morality and conscience, and the rationalization of ego-serving moral codes—codes that would lead to chaos The awareness and acceptance if generally applied— of our role as servants of life and are a hallmark of pathological soul is a healing medicine to all egocentricity.

forms The Alcoholics Anonymous recovery program, developed in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, offers one of the most successful methods for recovery from addiction available. Its basic principles and steps of character development are worthy of reflection by all people who suffer from egocentricity, malignant or otherwise. That means pretty much all of us.

of egocentricity.

One value of the A.A. approach to addiction recovery rests in its recognition of the fact that the ego is meant to serve the Self rather than the other way around. A.A. and its related programs (N.A., G.A., etc.) firmly recognize the role of egocentricity in the life and worldview of the addict. Addiction behaviors flow from and contribute to the egocentric tendencies of a person. A.A. says of alcoholics that “their life has become unmanageable.” Life is bound to become unmanageable

for anyone whose egocentricity becomes extreme. This is because the ego is not meant to control life. It is meant to flow with and serve life. When we pursue a path or goals that are at odds with our deeper nature and calling, we encounter more and more obstacles and frustrations. Life does not endorse or support the ego’s perspective. This realization, often associated with “hitting rock bottom,” leads to the next A.A. step where we “come to believe that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity.”

Only when we finally accept the lesson that we are not in charge, that we are not the creator and master of our own destiny, are we opened to the reality of a power greater than ourselves. It dawns on us that we are meant to serve life rather than rule it. This humbling awareness opens our mind and heart to the reality of a higher wisdom and power that can bring us back to sanity and guide us to wholeness. The awareness and acceptance of our role as servants of life and soul is a healing medicine to all forms of egocentricity.

experiences have opened your eyes to the smallness of your own will in relation to the deeper currents of life and your own unconscious.

Steps 4 and 5 state that those in recovery make a “searching and fearless moral inventory” of themselves and that they admit “to God, themselves and another human being the exact nature of their wrongs.” The realization that you are not the center of the universe, that you cannot recast life in your own image, goals, or desires, and that life will always be unmanageable so long as you are Step 3 states that the recovering trying to call the shots, is the foundation alcoholic/addict has made the decision to of a psychologically healthy personality. “turn their will and their lives over to the But much difficult and humbling work care of God as they understand Him.” remains for a house with structural When our egocentric viewpoint and integrity to be built. AUTISM

AND CHIROPRACTIC CARE Written by Tony Jensen, DC

O

ver the past decade the number of diagnosed cases of autism has rapidly been increasing throughout the nation. Let’s first look at what autism is.

“Anyone who knows anything about autism knows that the nervous system is greatly affected in this disorder and the challenges this brings about are responsible for many of the issues seen in children with autism, such as hyperactivity, attention issues, sleep challenges, behavior problems, social issues, sensory processing issues, and more. In addition, the nervous system is so intimately linked with the digestive and immune systems (the other two systems most commonly affected in autism) that it can also contribute to things such as bowel and bladder problems, autoimmune challenges, and more.” “There are no medications that can cure autism, but drugs

20

can relieve and treat symptoms such as aggression and hyperactivity, thus helping autistic individuals cope with their disorder. Even though the exact causes for the disorder are still unknown, current research mainly focuses on genetics; however, environmental factors and imbalances in neurochemistry may also be involved.” Some of the possible ways the nervous system can be damaged or injured are mainly traumatic birth injury or in-utero constraint issues (i.e. breech positioning). C-sections, forceps, vacuum extraction, and prolonged pushing all lead to greater risk of traumatic birth injury to the infant’s head and neck area. There is no single, unique measure of abnormality found in autism, because the spectrum of autistic conditions and symptoms is wide, ranging from severe disability in some patients to mild problems of communicating and understanding in others with average and above average intelligence.

February 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

Once that injury occurs, it can put pressure on the brain stem and spinal cord, as well as the spinal nerves in the vicinity. What is more, by creating a misalignment and joint fixation complex (subluxation) in the area, it leads to improper neurological “signaling” or “communication” into and out of the central nervous system. This is the primary reason so many children with autism have challenges with sensory processing, social interaction, behavior, learning, digestive disorders, infantile colic, ear infections, and immune dysfunctions leading to allergies, asthma, eczema, and other inflammatory reactions. ”Parents first become concerned about their child’s behavior, particularly the absence of play, when their child is around 18 months old. Earlier detection, however, is possible. According to Jane Jennings and Martina Barker of the Newbury Chiropractic Center in Berkshire, Great Britain, a simple checklist can help parents evaluate early on whether their child might be autistic: Does the child pretend play? Does the child use his or her index finger to point, to indicate interest in something? Does the child take an interest in other children? Does the child enjoy playing peek-a-boo or hide-and-seek? And does the child ever bring objects over to you to show you something? If the answer to two or more questions is no, autism may be a factor because it impairs the way the child communicates, relates to other people and understands emotional expressions. During the aforementioned study, researchers carried out a series of chiropractic adjustments on 26 autistic children over a 9-month period. The results were an improvement in certain reflexes and sensations, an increase in neck range of motion, and improvement of other health problems. Many of the children were taken off Ritalin; their bladder and bowel control improved; some children started to speak, eye contact and attention span improved while hyperactivity and aggressive behavior were reduced. Also, five children were able to attend regular classes at school for the first time. The autistic children suffered from neurological interference that hindered their development.” The researchers concluded that correcting the nerve irritation or “subluxation” can positively affect local neurological function and cause an overall improvement. Even though there was no control group to back up the findings, the results are encouraging: They show that chiropractic care may improve the quality of life of autistic children by relieving some of the symptoms of their disease. So we see that chiropractic care can have a positive effect. That is beneficial, but improving the quality of life for autistic children is just a first step. If we are truly going to win the battle with autism in this country, we must learn how to prevent it, not cure it. For more info, contact Dr. Tony Jensen at 775-323-1222 See ad on this page.

Loveinisthe air Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

Libido Enhancers As the days finally grow longer and with Valentine’s Day approaching, romance is in the air. Ideally, sexual fulfillment should improve with age but alas aging, hormonal decline and illness can blunt sexual responsiveness. Women’s Sexual Health Many authors have opined over the years that the female sexual response is a complicated issue. However, aside from obvious human interpersonal relationship problems, sexual desire in both sexes is regulated by hormones and neurotransmitters. The adrenal glands sitting on the kidneys are the stress glands. If one doesn’t sleep or is under lots of stress it can cause an outpouring of adrenalin into the body. This is the fight or flight hormone and doesn’t cause people to feel very sexy and can cause fatigue and exhaustion. Progesterone, an adrenal hormone can block adrenalin and promote calmness and sleep, especially the stronger professional grade. Bioidentical progesterone is available at 50 mg per pump and rubbed on the inner arms and wrists. It promotes relaxation in three to five minutes in most people and returns them to sleep promptly and also improves energy. Testosterone is the sexual desire hormone in both sexes and women make 50% of their testosterone in their adrenal gland. Again, stressed out adrenals don’t help a woman’s desire. Giving a female appropriate-dose testosterone replacement at about 1/5th or 1/10th the dose for a male, rubbed on as a cream, can be very helpful to restore lost libido. Too much can cause acne and facial hair.

22

DHEA is an adrenal hormone and can help with energy, libido and immune functioning. Given orally at 10 mg to 25 mg once or twice per day it is a precursor to testosterone which is the most direct libido component. It only helps libido in women. Menopausal issues such as vaginal dryness can be reversed with bioidentical biest cream administered vaginally. It contains 80% estriol and 20% estradiol and, when balanced with progesterone is very safe and helps prevent osteoporosis and depression as well. Transdermal (skin application) estrogen patches may be necessary to control severe menopausal symptoms. Estrogens should never be taken orally as it leads to increased risk of heart disease and blood clotting and transdermal does not.

Men’s Sexual Health Men’s testosterone levels decrease by about 3% per year after age 30. The blood tests for testosterone levels run from 350 to 1200 and we think it is better to be in the upper quartile rather than the lower quartile. Even young men in their thirties are frequently low in testosterone. Topical, bioidentical testosterone is very helpful to restore normal levels and enhance libidos. Recent studies on testosterone have revealed that supplementation is very safe and reduces the risk of heart attacks, strokes and all-cause mortality by 50%1. It also improves mood, muscle mass, bone density and doesn’t cause prostate cancer2, 3.

Pandan In the last few years we have enjoyed Pandan, a combination of 15 herbs from the Philippines which promote a notable increase in erectile function. Men take one or two per day and two or three more, two hours before intimacy. We call it Viagra light. It is all herbal and has no side effects, except it very rarely lowers blood pressure.

Oxytocin is a human hormone which is increased in women around childbirth to promote uterine contractions and bonding with the baby. It also elevates around loving relationships and orgasms. It can be applied topically before intimacy and is good for orgasms in both sexes. Called the “cuddle hormone” it is a recognized love hormone.

e all know that each thought has a different vibrational frequency, a specific electromagnetic signal. Those thoughts go out into the seemingly empty space around us and attract back to us the people, situations and conditions that match the frequency of the thought. The energy of our thoughts, our attitudes, impressions and perceptions also flood our bodies at the moment we think the thought. That flood of invisible energy, that very real thought, affects all fifty trillion cells in your body, and creates a feeling that matches the thought. Since there are over one hundred thousand processes taking place every second in every cell, this all happens very fast. That feeling, that emotion caused by the thought then drives our words and actions, which ultimately make up our lives. The premise behind the Law of Attraction has always been that if we can control our thoughts, we can control our lives.

Marijuana

What are the uses? Many people know (I think) that it can be used for pain management, but can you expand upon that and other uses?

Cannabis, or marijuana, has been part of humanity’s medicine chest for almost as long as history has been recorded. Modern research suggests that cannabis is a valuable aid in the treatment of a wide range of clinical applications.1 These include pain relief -- particularly of neuropathic pain (pain from nerve damage) -nausea, spasticity, glaucoma and movement disorders. Marijuana is also a powerful appetite stimulant, specifically for patients suffering from HIV, the AIDS wasting syndrome, or dementia. Emerging research suggests that marijuana’s medicinal properties may protect the body against some types of malignant tumors and are neuroprotective. Beyond pain management and nausea control cannabis, or marijuana, depending on the strain, can provide an uplifting and energizing effect, sharpening mental focus and attentiveness. Other strains can offer a more relaxing and calming effect creating a deep sense of contentment.

What kind of health benefits can be expected? Generally, consuming marijuana may help in the treatment of a variety of symptoms with the primary two being pain and nausea that may derive from a wide range of illnesses. Receptors in the brain that allow uptake of the chemical compounds in cannabis are actually part of the most widespread receptor system in the body. Not only is the body naturally attuned to these molecules, it also uses them to great effect — numerous studies have established that cannabinoids help reduce pain and other distressing symptoms. 2

Please dispel some of the most common myths. During the course of America’s “war on drug” marijuana was frequently portrayed as a dangerous drug but in fact it is far less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco. Around 50,000 people die each year from alcohol poisoning. Similarly, more than 400,000 deaths each year are attributed to tobacco smoking. By comparison, marijuana is nontoxic and cannot cause death by overdose.

26

It is also accused of being a so-called “gateway” drug, leading to harder drug use. For most of the population this is not the case. A report by the Institute of Medicine found “no conclusive evidence that the drug effects of marijuana are causally linked to the subsequent abuse of other illicit drugs.” 3 Marijuana opponents often claim that cannabis use causes apathy and a lack of motivation. In fact, studies done on test subjects in which they were given a high dose of cannabis regularly over a period of days or weeks found that there was no loss in motivation or ability to perform. Furthermore, studies indicate that cannabis users tend to have higher paid jobs than non-users.

Dear Editor: I read the article on Medical Marijuana in your Jan. 2016 publication. It was very well written: concise, very informative and a refreshing read. I was contracted by the State of NV in Sept. 2014 as one of 30 contractors who were hired to evaluate 519 applications that were submitted to obtain a license(s) for a medical marijuana business(es). Out of 30 people, 3 of us maintained a contract with the state to be an integral part of developing a program to ensure all establishments (that were granted a license), open in a timely fashion as per NRS and regulations, as mandated in the State of NV. It was and is not an easy process and the dollar amounts that these establishments have invested are staggering, to say the least. With that being said, I wanted to correct a statement made by the journalist who wrote this piece. Sierra Wellness Connection (WSCC), was not the first dispensary to open in the State of Nevada. In fact, they were the 3rd dispensary to open in the state. The first was Euphoria Wellness, in Las Vegas, NV. The second was Silver State Dispensary [sic], located in Sparks, NV. And then there was Sierra Wellness, in Reno, NV. These establishments worked very hard to be the first to open in this state, and I feel it only fair to the owners of these establishment give credit where credit is due. It is an honor to work with the people in these establishments, as I know they have dedicated a great deal of time and money to stay in compliance with the state and the conditions determined by the individual counties within the state of Nevada. Thank you for your time, Christy P. Dear Christy: Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on the January “What You Need To Know About Medical Marijuana” article. Having contacted one of the founders of Sierra Wellness regarding the information, I was able to confirm that they were indeed, as it states in the article, the “first fully licensed ‘seedto-sale’ medical marijuana facility” in Nevada. What that means is that the product they sell comes from their own cultivation facility, as opposed to being purchased from an outside source. I did check with the other dispensaries – one of them will soon be cultivating their own product and another does now cultivate their own product, but I understand they did not when Sierra Wellness opened. We really appreciate your feedback on this content. Prior to publishing their ad and article, we worked very closely with Sierra Wellness to adhere to state laws and compliances. Thank you again for reading Healthy Beginnings and for contacting us regarding the article. Kippy Spilker Editor, Healthy Beginnings

IN THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC PAIN

By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

L

ast month we made the case that there is no “silver bullet” treatment for chronic pain conditions because all chronic pain conditions are multifactorial. It would seem then that the diagnostic challenge of determining the cause of each patient’s individual chronic pain condition would be almost impossible. If you understand what causes chronic pain – it is not. Our clinical observations are that most chronic pain syndromes come from dysfunction of two distinct bodily systems: the brain and the immune system – either separately or in that order in as much as the brain controls the immune system. These two systems, in a domino effect manner, may or may not affect further systems (i.e. cardio vascular, digestive, bowel, etc.) Based again on our clinical observations practicing functional medicine and functional neurology we believe that one cannot resolve any chronic pain condition long-term without addressing that person’s unique brain dysfunction. We’re not talking about fixing brain tumors, cancers or neuromas, we’re talking about brain cells that are alive but not firing at the proper frequency and amplitude – in essence not doing their job. Whatever region of your brain contains cells that are not functioning

proper brain functioning depends on positive neuroplasticity

properly will either cause its own unique set of symptoms or prevent other aspects of the body physiology from getting well. Proper brain functioning depends on positive neuroplasticity – the ability to build strong pathways in the brain for the daily activities you do the most and, hopefully, well. Proper brain neuroplasticity thus also is necessary to help your body’s immune system function effectively. Brain plasticity is dependent upon two main factors. First, brain cells require proper stimulation to activate the continuous phenomenon of strengthening – the ‘use it or lose it’ principle. Second, brain neurons require the appropriate chemical environment in order for the aforementioned stimulation to be effective. Both factors are necessary for the brain to stay healthy, do its overall job and, relative to chronic pain, help you to heal. continued on page 30

Differences in the presence or absence of these two variables explain why there can be significant variations in patient recoveries not just relative to obviously brain-related pain syndromes such as concussions, migraines, vertigo, etc., but also in such conditions as fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy, restless legs, most gut problems, and female hormonal issues – just to name a few. So a stroke patient whose brain cell chemistry is poor, due to being a smoker for 30 years, leading a sedentary life, and eating fried and processed foods every day is less likely to recover as well from their stroke symptoms as does someone who exercises regularly, leads a healthy lifestyle, and generally eats well. The first patient clearly does not supply their brain cells with the proper fuels to give them enough energy to respond to targeted brain stimulations such as classic physical therapy stroke exercise regimens. Some of you may be thinking “but I don’t have brain issues. That’s not part of my problem.” Frankly most unhealthy people have them but simply aren’t aware that the symptoms they are experiencing are indicative of poor brain function. So how do you know what your individual level of proper brain plasticity/function is and if it’s actually causing or able to help you recover from whatever chronic pain syndrome you’ve developed? It’s easy – just ask yourself if it’s easier or more difficult for you to learn things or to acquire a new skill than it was 5 years ago. If it’s harder and you’ve also developed chronic pain or any of the conditions in the above mentioned text during the same time, you have an insufficient neuroplasticity. This is a brain that has less capacity than five years ago and cannot help you to get well. Or worse this brain has developed negative plasticity (creating and learning bad neurological patterns like enhancing and learning to experience pain in an enhanced fashion, as in fibromyalgia). In essence, when you’ve developed negative neuroplasticity your brain has lost the ability to help you get well or is contributing to enhancing brain patterns to make your condition worse. This is the patient who doesn’t respond to care long term whether their chosen approach is alternative or allopathic. It’s important to understand that poor plasticity and brain function are not directly related to your age. Proper brain function absent of genetic or traumatic pathologies is relative to the amount of proper stimulation it receives, and to the health of the chemical environment that you provide it, period. If you’ve noticed a decline in your brain function

30

and you find it harder to learn new things or if you find it difficult to recover from a chronic pain condition you need to shift the chemical environment in your brain cells relative to blood sugar, inflammatory issues, immune infections, food sensitivities, antioxidative issues, and digestive bowel issues as these conditions (and more) all create a negative chemical environment in the brain neurons. Only then can you have someone provide the proper brain stimulation exercises to the specific areas of the brain that are poorly functioning, building the proper strength of that part of the brain which is required for your body’s functions to respond and break the cycle of chronic pain. Medicines and alternative herbs, botanicals and diets can be useful in addressing the chemistry, but almost no one pays attention to or provides the specific stimulatory strategies, therapeutic procedures, or exercises required to address the neuroplasticity of their poorly functioning brain. This, in large part, is the reason that the rapidly increasing chronic pain population (120 million and growing) has no chance of truly achieving long term recovery in the current health care models. This is a bold statement, but we are confident that it is accurate. The concept of brain contributions to chronic pain is one that requires much more elaboration than really can be achieved in an article of this length and nature. But it is a concept that must be understood and employed if we as practitioners and patients ever expect to stem the rising tide of chronic pain. In next month’s article we will try to bring more clarity to this issue by presenting several examples of conditions you may or may not associate with poor brain function. We’ll start with depression (which is generally not a personality disorder), chronic fatigue (generally not Epstein Barr) and almost all gastrointestinal problems. Raw Miso Soup with Kelp Noodles and Marinated Sea Vegetables Submitted by Marie-Claire Hermans, Energy Coach for Experts™

T

he way you eat and live can make you sick or…heal you. A healthy raw diet is the key for many ailments. A vegetable that is often overlooked, underestimated, denied and rejected — due to its less common taste — is seaweed. Yet, a small daily portion can set you up for a happy thyroid, and protect against radiation. You can take this recipe and start varying each part of it and turn it into another exciting dish with high iodine levels.

This food is your yummy thyroid medicine! PREPARATIONS FOR THE SEA VEGETABLES Rinse about half the amount you need under running water Steep the sea vegetables in a large bowl covered with spring water Let them soak for an hour: they will expand Take out and rinse well again to remove the excessive salt For Kelp Noodles Rinse a pack of (green tea) noodles

MARINATE THE SEA VEGETABLES 10 MINUTES IN 2 TBSP Sesame oil 2 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar 1 TBSP Tamari (gluten-free) or Nama Shoyu 2 TBSP date paste (blend some dates with water) or a bit of Stevia 1 TBSP raw sesame seeds 1 TBSP of minced ginger Juice of 1 lime

MISO SOUP 1 C hot water (to about 158°F, not boiled) 2 TBSP miso 2 TBSP dulse flakes 1 TBSP grated ginger Blend the water with the miso, flakes and ginger Divide the soup over 2 bowls Place some kelp noodles and sea vegetables in the middle of the soup Sprinkle dulse flakes in the soup and top with a few radish slices

TIPS

Find out what your angels are trying to tell you.
