EDITOR’S NOTE

HEALTHY BEGINNINGS “Life is not merely being alive, but being well.” — Marcus Valerius Martialis

Happy August, Northern Nevada! We’ve enjoyed quite a gorgeous, warm summer this year. What have you been doing to stay cool, active and well this season? If you haven’t embraced the sunkissed summer months as much as you’d like, take time this August to welcome all that our warm summer days and cool summer nights offer your soul. Take an excursion to Lake Tahoe to enjoy the cool mornings, crisp water and clear air. Stroll through one of our local museums and soak in the local arts culture. Attend a community yoga class to foster movement and meet a new yogi. This month, our goal is to connect you with your wellness. And, wellness is not achieved merely through healthy eating and exercise. Wellness is achieved by cultivating meaningful life experiences. Elevate your wellness by viewing a new art gallery, volunteering for a local nonprofit or experimenting with a new cultural cuisine – embrace experiences that foster creativity and emotion. In this issue, we feature Each One Tell One, an organization that raises dense breast tissue awareness for early breast cancer detection, all while providing support to breast cancer survivors. We also offer natural remedies for caring for your voice, we highlight the health benefits of visiting your local art museum and we showcase the benefits of early childhood music education. We discuss the benefits of hydrogen peroxide therapy, we showcase the history and art of acupuncture, we feature the benefits of lavender oil and we provide knowledge and insight on hot health topics in our nation, including inflammation, fibromyalgia and diabetic health. We want to thank Lavender Ridge Event Venue, located at 7450 W. 4th St. in Reno, for providing this month’s gorgeous cover photo (we added a watercolor filter to the image). Lavender blossoms from June to late August – it’s truly a lovely, picturesque summer plant that provides cleansing and healing properties, along with scents that promote feelings of peace and relaxation. Please connect with us if you have questions, comments or ideas. Follow us and engage with our social platforms and content. And, of course, we wish you warmth and wellness this August. Cheers, Gabrielle Irvin

NUR R THE VOICE NURTURE VO C

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR PROTECTING THE ART OF VOCAL MUSIC By Michael Gerber, M.D., H.M.D.

I have been fortunate to be a vocalist with the Nevada Opera for more than 30 years, and with the Reno Philharmonic chorus for many years. During this time I treated lead singers for the Opera who became ill before their performances, and I have a successful track record for getting them on stage with good voice for the opening show. In the past, I have also treated many of the headliners at one of our venerable casinos for around 20 years. One of the great stories in treating famous singers and entertainers includes my treating of “LL.” She had just flown in from England and lost her voice after the first show. The VP at the hotel casino called me stating that she had lost her voice and hoped I could come over right away because there was a full house for her second show. I went to the office and drew up an adrenal B12 and folic acid shot, along with some Procaine, Traumeel, Kenalog and Bacillus firmus in a syringe. I met her backstage and offered her the adrenal shot, and she said, “I don’t do needles.” So, I squirted her throat with the new Traumeel concoction. She was completely without voice when I arrived. After the first squirt she had a little voice. Then, after the second

a little more and after the third squirt in her throat she had her full voice. We were both astounded and she sang the whole second show. I was back stage and tried to slow down her growling and stressing of her voice, but she kept it up and sang flawlessly. Since then, generations of Reno and international singers and performers have used what we call the “LL spray” to bail them out of vocal disasters before performances. We still support vocalists and entertainers from around the world with this preparation.

Hormonal, Homeopathic Remedies and Nutrients for the Voice Hoarseness is very common in low thyroid conditions. As the reader may know, there are many signs and symptoms of low thyroid, which do not correspond to usual thyroid hormone blood tests. Adding natural, porcine thyroid or bioidentical T3 and/or T4 can be very important to cure hoarseness, especially with aging and after childbirth. Your integrative and homeopathic medical practitioners can guide you in safe thyroid replacement strategies.

“Avoiding dairy products, especially cow’s milk, can relieve excessive mucus drainage from the sinuses on the vocal chords.” Homeopathic Gelsemium is great for all forms of paralysis and especially loss of voice, and Causticum is another favorite for hoarseness. There are many homeopathic remedies that affect the voice. Vitamins including vitamin A and C support the vocal apparatus. Tea tree oil swabs in the throat and 3 percent food grade peroxide gargling can help protect the voice from infections. Avoiding dairy products, especially cow’s milk, can relieve excessive mucus drainage from the sinuses on the vocal chords. Giving enzymes, either pancreatic enzymes and/ or papain from papaya and bromelains from the pineapple plant taken between meals, can help digest mucus and reduce inflammation. Products such as AllerDHQ or D-Hist

contain dihydroquercetin, a bioflavonoid related to rutin from a Russian Larch tree, which stabilizes the mast cells (which release histamine and combat allergic reactions). Other ingredients include bromelains from the pineapple plant, which is anti-inflammatory, N acetyl cysteine, a precursor to glutathione, our body’s premier antioxidant, and Nettles, a famous herbal remedy for allergies. Taking care of voices has long been one of our specialty services. When one’s livelihood depends on the proper functioning of the vocal apparatus, having a powerful repertoire of natural remedies is very important. THE ART OF

ACUPUNCTURE By Brianna Brownfield, LAc

An ancient medical system has found its place in modern healthcare. Although acupuncture in the United States is still viewed as a relatively new, “alternative” form of medicine, it has repeatedly proven successful in treating a myriad of both acute and chronic conditions, earning its place in today’s medical community. Acupuncturists now work side by side with physicians in hospitals, cancer centers and addiction recovery facilities across the country. Many people are turning to this ancient practice to fill the gaps left by the conventional pharmaceutical model. While acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are becoming more widely accepted and utilized, there is still much mystery and lack of understanding of the medicine. Even those who receive acupuncture regularly often question its theories and how it actually works. The confusion lies in cultural differences between the Western and Eastern mind, varying vocabulary to describe physiological phenomenon, and a different comprehension of the human body and how it interacts with the world around us. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive whole-body medical system. It provides an integral framework for understanding physiology, interpreting patterns and organizing interventions in the health-disease process. The foundation of this system stems from the simple, yet very profound, theory of Yin-Yang. It is said that all body processes, pathology and treatments can be reduced down to Yin-Yang. While the term may sound esoteric, it is simply a way to define how everything functions in relation to each other. Examples of Yin qualities are darkness, cool, restful, quiet and space. By contrast, Yang qualities are light, hot, active, loud and time. Absolute health is considered complete homeostasis, a perfect balance of Yin-Yang. Illness arises when we have too much of one and not enough of the other. Our endocrine system is in a constant flux of Yin-Yang, releasing specific hormones that are cycled and timed throughout the day and month. The Yang-like hormone Cortisol is released and peaks in the morning to wake you up and get you moving. The Yin-like hormone Melatonin peaks in the evening to slow you down and allow rest. When these circadian rhythms of Yin and Yang become disrupted it can lead to insomnia at night and fatigue during the day. Understanding disharmonies of Yin-Yang within the body is the root of all diagnosis and treatment in TCM.

8

The concept of Qi is another fundamental acupuncture term that can be difficult for the Western brain to wrap its head around. It can be challenging to comprehend that which we cannot see, touch, measure and record. Qi is a vital force that acts as the action potential to drive all of our biological processes. Ted Kaptchuk, OMD, professor of medicine at Harvard and the author of “The Web That Has No Weaver,” defines Qi as “the fundamental quality of being and becoming.” The proper transformation and movement of Qi allows for healthy circulation of blood and body fluids, digestion and assimilation of food, and nourishing the skin, sinews and bones. There are many different types of Qi. Yuan Qi, the essence you are born with, Gu Qi, which is created by the metabolism of food, and Zong Qi, which is gathered via the breath. There are many other forms of Qi, all of which can be cultivated, impaired and manipulated with diet and lifestyle choices. TCM views the internal workings of the body as innately connected to its natural environment. In fact, this relationship between human and Earth is considered a key element in the health of the individual. Because of this, Chinese medical terms are similar to those used to describe nature and the world around us. Relationships were made and patterns in nature identified that correlate with human physiology. This is why TCM views external elements such as wind, cold, heat, dryness and dampness as contributing factors to disease. It is easy to understand how the natural elements can greatly influence the state of your health when you walk out into a windstorm and begin to get the sniffles, or when the temperature drops and your joints start to ache. The Acupuncture Meridian System is also explained using terms from nature. Meridians are viewed as interconnected passageways allowing Qi and body fluids to flow freely and nourish organs and body tissues. The meridians are a communication network that connect both to internal organs and each other, making the body a unified whole. In biomedical terms, your meridians are analogous to the circulatory system transporting blood and the nervous system transmitting electrical impulses creating a physiological response. Meridians create a form of communication between your internal organs and external stimuli outside the body. Every organ has its own set of meridian systems that

“While acupuncture is most well known for its ability to relieve conditions associated with physical pain (low back pain, migraines, etc.), many are unaware of the benefits for several internal chronic conditions, which range from infertility, digestive disorders, asthma, anxiety, depression, substance addiction and detox.” connects its internal organ to the surface of the body where acupuncture points are found. These points are utilized as access points to stimulate a systemic response. Sometimes the ebb and flow of Qi in the meridians can become disrupted or blocked leading to organ dysfunction or pain. Common contributing factors include diet, lifestyle habits, physical or emotional trauma, lack of exercise and environmental toxins. By choosing acupuncture points on the affected meridian the practitioner is able to adjust the flow of Qi and help the body’s ability to regulate its internal environment and maintain homeostasis.

Donald Kendall, author of “Dao of Chinese Medicine” writes, “The need to continually search for the truth is the most fundamental principle of science and medicine… Research so far shows that the true concepts of Chinese Medicine operate under known physiological principles, involving the complex organization of the neural, vascular, endocrine, and somatic systems, sustained by the circulation of nutrients, vital substances, and oxygen from vital air.” While acupuncture is most well known for its ability to relieve conditions associated with physical pain (low back pain, migraines, etc.), many are unaware of the benefits for several internal chronic conditions, which range from infertility, digestive disorders, asthma, anxiety, depression, substance addiction and detox. All forms of medicine have their strengths and weaknesses. No single form of medicine, allopathic or holistic, is a cure-all or right for everyone. Eastern and Western medicine used together complement each other in a way that can support and enhance outcomes. Viewing your health through the lens of both medical philosophies provides a full range of integrated healthcare options available to you. Next time you find yourself needing some help with your health, consider acupuncture as your first option.

YOUR CULTURE IS YOUR HEALTH By Melvin Ibarra Nario, M.D., H.M.D.

Every culture is represented by a specific diet and lifestyle, complete with traditions and customs that are held dear over many generations. Cultural heritage is often accompanied by a sense of pride about how life has been sustained for ages. From a different perspective, customary diets and lifestyles will also reflect the overall health status of any particular culture. Here are some good examples of lifestyles that have had an overall positive impact on a culture’s health.

d. In the U.S., studies indicate that the Hispanic ethnicity has less access to healthcare in comparison with the African American and white populations. Even so, the irony is that Hispanics still have a lower risk of cancer and heart disease, as well as a longer lifespan. The reason for that is they consume 33 percent more of the bean supply in the country versus whites and African Americans. Eating beans increases fiber intake and lowers systemic inflammation.

The Indian culture was noted to have a lower cancer rate versus the “Westerners” due to the spice turmeric. Turmeric has major anti-inflammatory effects on the body, and has been a staple for centuries in Indian dishes. Almost 40 percent of the Indian population is also vegetarian.

b. Okinawa, Japan was known to have one of the highest longevity rates in the world. They are known to have a lower incidence of chronic heart disease and lower incidence of prostate and breast cancer compared to the United States. As their diets were dissected, the root vegetable “sweet potato” was prominent. The cultural norm called “hara hachi bu,” which means “eat only until you’re 80 percent full,” was also imparted by Okinawan grandmothers through the years to prevent obesity.

DETOX YOUR MIND 10

The Mediterranean diet was initially started in Greece, specifically in the island of Crete. It was noted that the population had a lower incidence of heart disease, cancer and overall deaths compared to the U.S. population. Upon further investigation, it was found that the Mediterranean diet is 90 percent plant based, utilizing low quantities of fish, eggs and dairy, which if consumed in higher amounts, can contribute to elevated saturated fat levels in the body.

If there are good points about cultural diets, there are also detrimental ones. Here are a few examples: a.

In general, Asians consume a good amount of white rice. This increases their risk of Type 2 diabetes due to processing and low fiber. Due to this dietary custom, China

“As influenced by the media, peer pressure and easy accessibility, you will see how it put cultural health into a downward spiral. The Western diet has taken over the globe in terms of its influence, and has affected cultures in more negative than positive ways.” had been found to have an increase in the number of diabetes cases, which is almost similar to U.S. rates. The atypical presentation here is that Chinese people appear “skinny” compared to the obese diabetic U.S. individual. b. The American lifestyle has been found to be subpar with health standards due to these evidences: i. Only 3 percent of the adult population in the country are non-smokers, are in ideal body weight, consume five or more fruits per day and have regular physical activity of greater than 30 minutes. ii. Heart blood vessels were found early in children in the U.S. to be clogged with fat, which is related to their diet. iii. The “Western diet,” which is low in fruits, seeds, nuts and vegetables, high in sodium and processed meat, is the number one cause of death and disability in the U.S.

Cultural shift is the assimilation of one’s culture into another. This can be seen through migration to a different country, intercultural marriage or by choice of an individual due to various influences. Presently, cultural shifts lean toward adopting a new diet (specifically the Western diet). As influenced by the media, peer pressure and easy accessibility, you will see how it put cultural health into a downward spiral. The Western diet has taken over the globe in terms of its influence, and has affected cultures in more negative than positive ways. Here are examples: a.

The Mediterranean diet now has been attributed to coronary heart disease due to the addition of meat, cheese, “pizzas” and noodles with meat sauce. b. Okinawa, Japan has more than 12 Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants and fast food chains, which increased the population’s fat and sodium intake. Before they had the lowest BMI in Japan, but now they rank the highest. c. The Hispanic mortality rate continues to increase as they migrate to the U.S. and adopt the Western diet (increased fast food and saturated fat). d. The Chinese people’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes is worsened by the Western diet (increased use of pork, fat consumption, vegetable oil and processed junk food). Here at Bio Integrative Health Center International, let us guide you in understanding what the good and bad points are about various cultural diets and habits. With this information, we will help you learn to utilize more of the good points, turning them into a lifestyle for your everyday living. By eating right in relation to your culture’s diet, you can ensure that the race of your future generations will live healthier lives. AUGUST: THE PERFECT MONTH FOR INSPIRING CREATIVITY AND HEALTH By Christina Luna

Have you ever told yourself that this is the summer you are finally going to start a garden, get out more in nature, train for a marathon, try a vegan lifestyle or finally clean out your house and have that huge yard sale? Suddenly it’s August, and you feel the time slipping away from you and you haven’t started any of the projects you’d hoped to accomplish.

The good news is that it’s only the beginning of August and you still have time to accomplish some of your goals. There are a couple more months left of long days and warm evenings, fresh fruit and vegetables at the farmers market, art festivals and concerts! In fact, the environment of August is perfect for supporting you. August is inherently supportive of creativity. Here are five reasons why:

Color

Natural light is like fuel for our creative juices. With so many hours of warm light available during the day, it’s easy to fill our energy tanks to the brim. August is the time when fruits are becoming their ripest, full of as much sunlight as they can hold, offering yet another way to fill our bodies with light. This full spectrum light has been proven to boost the immune system, increase dopamine levels and reduce cortisol in the body. So, fill your tanks! The time is ripe to start creating!

Bright colors create visual interest and help fight fatigue. When our brains receive complex combinations of full spectrum colors, we can feel the difference. Try it for yourself. Stare at a blank wall in your house for 5 minutes (if you can stand it), then step outside and soak in the vibrant colors of August. Notice the difference in how you feel. All the inspiration you need for coaxing yourself into initiating your new endeavor is waiting for you during this colorful month.

Sound

Let the creative environment of August inspire your indoor spaces as well. Pay attention to these elements in your home and workplace, and choose to patronize businesses that have taken these elements into account. When an indoor space supports our creativity, we are far more likely to follow through with the things that require our ingenuity.

Have you ever noticed that a moderate noise level, like birds chirping, streams flowing or some smooth tunes playing relaxes the body and activates the creative mind? This is because moderate ambient sound actually stimulates creativity more than complete silence. In August we can open our windows, let nature into our homes and offices and listen to the sweet sounds of summer. We have time to take it all in. Go out to your garage or garden and let the easy melodies be a backdrop to that project you are finally tackling.

Temperature

The heat of August may be relentless, but these high temperatures bring the fire of creativity to our bodies and stimulate our systems rather than push them into hibernation, like the bitter cold of winter. So let the heat drive you to be innovative. We are already warmed up, now move!

PATIENT MYSTERIES: CAN DIABETES BE REVERSED?

PART 5: REDUCING INSULIN RESISTANCE NATURALLY By William Clearfield, D.O.

“I’ll vouch for you,” Teddy replied. “Not that it would mean a whole lot. Come on, quit stalling. Monday night is not that far away.” “Teddy,” I said. “Okay. Here are my Big Six.” Anti-Aging in Six Dr. Clearfield’s Six Top Herbal Remedies and Supplements to Reduce Insulin Resistance Cinnamon 500-1000 mg/d Improves glucose utilization, increases insulin receptor sensitivity

Getty Images

Remember Teddy from our March 2017 Healthy Beginnings Magazine article? He presented with extreme thirst, impaired vision and the need to urinate every 30-40 minutes. After 6 months of gaining weight (172-226 pounds) and a climbing blood pressure (110/60 to 142/88), his body crashed. He lost 30 pounds in less than 2 weeks. He became disoriented and would have passed if he had not sought help immediately. We hospitalized Teddy, stabilized his blood sugars, then offered him the best of modern medicine’s advice on changing his lifestyle to delay any further complications. Teddy embraced the Mini-Fast with Bone Broth and Exercise Diet (explained in the April 2017 Healthy Beginnings Magazine). He started a walking program and took his medicine. His blood sugar settled in only slightly above normal (101 fasting) and his blood pressure dropped below his pre-illness level. He needed new glasses, but after 6 weeks of finally caring for himself, Teddy declared that he was a “new man.” Then, as often happens with the “Teddys” in real life, the crisis passed, and Teddy became Teddy again. He only had “a couple of beers” while watching Monday Night Football. And often asked, “What’s a few SNICKERS® bars? What’s a couple, two or maybe three, cookies? A little ice cream never hurt anybody, right?” When reminded of his previous desperate state, he waved the whole encounter away. “Ah, I’ve got your pills. They make me sick, and they’re expensive. And I’m not using insulin, it comes from pigs.” “Wrong,” I said. “Most insulins used today are human-like synthetics. Or, I can get a pig insulin if you want.” Teddy cursed me with his eyes. “How about something natural from you doctors?” he asked. I knew this was coming. “I’ll probably get kicked out of the doctor’s fraternity,” I said.

CBD for Energy Expenditure Resulting in Weight Loss • CBD acts on the fat deposition difference between white (WAT) and brown (BAT) adipose tissues. • WAT and BAT: Types of specialized adipose tissue in mammals with opposite functions. • BAT: Metabolically active generation of heat by oxidizing fatty acids (triglycerides). Mechanism for cold adaptation. Found both in infant and adults. • Conversion of WAT into BAT can enhance whole body energy expenditure and reduce diet-induced obesity. The Budwig “Snack” In 1952, Dr. Johanna Budwig, a German government expert on lipids and pharmacology, illustrated the role fats played in preventing cancer. When not present in sufficient amounts, cells metabolize glucose via fermentation outside the cell’s energy nucleus, the mitochondria. Dr. Budwig demonstrated that the “new” methods of processing fats and hydrogenated oils destroyed cell membranes allowing diseased cells and toxins to flourish. Each cell in our body has a central nucleus with a positive charge and a cell wall with negatively charged electrons on its surface. Processed fats destroy the cell membrane disrupting normal function. Dr. Budwig recommended an oil-protein mixture to jump-start normal cell metabolism and shift energy production back to the mitochondria effectively bringing cells back to life. The Formula • 6 oz of cultured dairy (cottage cheese, goat milk kefir) • 4 Tbsp of sprouted and ground chia or flax • 1 Tbsp flaxseed oil • 1 tsp turmeric powder • 1/4 tsp black pepper Mix all the ingredients together in bowl or blender and consume once daily. Extras: Add berries, fruit, organic raw nuts such as ground hemp seed, ground almonds, sunflower seed, pumpkin seed and Brazil nuts (but not peanuts). For flavoring try vanilla, cinnamon, shredded coconut or a dash of cayenne pepper. Budwig Breakfast Muesli 1. Mix 3 tablespoons of flaxseed oil with 6 tablespoons of cottage cheese/quark (maximum 2 percent fat content). If the fat content of the cottage cheese or quark is too high, the flaxseed oil will not mix into it, canceling out the oxygenating benefits of the Budwig Muesli. Do not stir by hand. Use a blender or a handheld electric mixer for 1 minute at a slow speed. The muesli should have the consistency of whipped cream, with no excess oil. Do not add anything else until it has a creamy consistency. 2. Separately, in a coffee grinder, grind 2 tablespoons of whole flax seeds and add to the mix made in step 1. This muesli turns rancid after 20 minutes, so ingest immediately. Do not grind and store seeds to be used later. Optional: To sweeten the muesli, add one teaspoon of honey (raw, unpasteurized honey is best, containing all of its healthy properties) or blended pieces of fruit. However, for different flavoring, add lemon, parsley or garlic. 2A. Substitute goat’s milk, oat milk, almond milk, or organic rice milk. 3. Add dried fruits, ground hemp seeds, ground almonds, ground sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts and pumpkin seeds (no peanuts).

4. Flavor with vanilla, cinnamon, lemon juice, raw cocoa or a touch of cayenne pepper. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Flaxseed oil must be kept cold, store it in the fridge. 2. THE ART OF HEALTHY LIVING By Amanda Horn

I’m currently re-reading The Dalai Lama’s “The Art of Happiness.” This morning, one quote in particular grabbed my attention: “The destructive effects of anger and hatred have been well documented by recent scientific studies. Of course, one doesn’t need scientific evidence to realize how these emotions can cloud judgment… or wreak havoc in our personal relationships.” Some things, it seems, are simply common sense. Negative emotions like anger and the exhausting rapidity of stress cause toxic responses in the body. Many of us take great measures to stave off these harmful effects. We eat well, breathe deep and engage in some sort of daily movement. But is it enough? The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Clearly, eating right and exercising regularly comprise only part of the whole health equation. Healthy living begins with cultivating meaningful life experiences and immersing yourself in creative endeavors. Art – both making and consuming it – forms the foundation for a rich, healthy life. Through artful engagement, we connect with others. We build culture. We create a healthy community. A 2010 article in the American Journal of Public Health by Heather L. Stuckey, D. Ed., and Jeremy Nobel, MD, MPH, explores the relationship between art, healing and public health. The authors indicate the crux of this connection lies in the very human need to share meaning, and to create meaningful experiences. Since the beginning of human existence, our drive has been toward constructing these shared moments. We long to connect to something greater than ourselves. This search for meaning, this subconscious yearning to plunge beneath life’s physical surface is one of the hallmarks of our humanity. Engaging with art helps us to manifest this desire.

One study cited in the paper showed reduced hospitalization time for people exposed to art and music during their stay. For sick patients, art serves as a refuge from powerful and often painful emotions. Art therapy has gained mainstream acceptance as a valid form of treatment for people suffering from physical, emotional or mental illness. From the terminally ill to the interminably busy, art makes people feel better. The studies in this review “… indicate that creative engagement can decrease anxiety, stress, and mood disturbances.” This doesn’t mean that all art you experience must make you feel happy inside in order to be an effective medicine. Some works are disturbing, some angry, some loud. Others are beautiful or dramatic. The key is the engagement and ensuing discourse with those around you. The purpose is to make meaning, to disrupt the mundane and connect with the extraordinary. In the words of Pablo Picasso, “Art washes the soul from the dust of everyday life.” Clearing the dust makes way for the light to shine through. In order to rise into the abundance of extraordinary health, you have to actively remove the toxic debris. Art is your cleaning agent. Visit the Nevada Museum of Art for some visual art-infused healthfulness. Right now the Museum has a diverse array of exhibitions. If hands-on art therapy is your script, take a class at the E. L. Cord Museum School. With more than 60 classes each quarter for all ages and levels of artists, you will definitely find something of interest. THE BENEFITS OF HYDROGEN PEROXIDE THERAPY By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

Getty Images

Hydrogen peroxide therapy has been utilized by informed physicians for over a century. There are over 6,000 published medical studies on it that have proven its benefit over and over again since then.

18

The unfortunate fact is that many physicians are still uninformed about its benefits or even worse, believe it is dangerous. Before scoffing at this idea, realize that the first line of defense by certain white blood cells in our immune system is to use hydrogen peroxide to oxidize (kill) invading parasites, viruses, bacteria, yeast and fungus.

Healthy Beginnings | August 2017

“What’s even more exciting is that the free radical (free oxygen molecules) has been found to be an effective way to kill cancer cells without harming normal cells!” All body tissues contain an enzyme called catalase. In the presence of catalase, peroxide (H2O2) is reduced to water (H2O) and free oxygen (O-). So, there is strong reason to believe that added hydrogen peroxide, used properly, will be both safe and effective against invading organisms. What’s even more exciting is that the free radical (free oxygen molecules) has been found to be an effective way to kill cancer cells without harming normal cells! William Campbell Douglass, M.D., PhD, discovered that not only is peroxide involved in body defense but it also acts like insulin in that it aids the transport of sugar through the body. It is also at least as important as the thyroid gland for heat generation because it creates “intracellular thermogenesis,” a warming of your cells, which is absolutely essential to life’s processes. Hydrogen peroxide is produced by all the cells of the body for many different physiological reasons. It is involved in protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, immunity, and vitamin and mineral metabolism in all the systems in the body. In a study done at Baylor University over 20 years ago, H2O2 was dripped into the leg and carotid vessels of patients known to have severe arteriosclerosis. When these patients died, autopsies were done to compare arteries that had been treated with those that were not. They reported that, “the plaque buildup was removed by injecting peroxide into the blood vessels.”

The First International Conference of Bio-Oxidative Medicine was held in February 1989 in Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas. Many studies have been presented at subsequent meetings showing benefits using IV peroxide in treating shingles, chronic obstructive lung disease and various viral infections, including AIDS, certain forms of cancer, gum disease, arthritis, depression, lupus and MS. The list could go on and exceed the space limitations of this article. Peroxide is extremely well tolerated by the body. At the same time it is capable of killing all these things, it does not kill us. This is because of the enzyme catalase. Catalase, found throughout the human body, causes peroxide to turn into oxygen and water. Viruses and bacteria do not contain catalase so the peroxide destroys them. It is true however, if used improperly, it can be harmful. It especially should not be taken orally. That is why it must be administered by a physician who knows how to use it correctly. HEALTHY RECIPE: LAYERED BERRY CHEESECAKE By Marie-Claire Hermans, Energy For Experts

• • •

1/8 tsp. sea salt or Himalayan salt 1/2 C to ¾ C coconut oil, melted au bain-marie (just place the jar in warm water) 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract or the seeds of 1/2 vanilla pod

TOP • •

3 different kinds of fresh berries to choice (if not available, frozen will do too) Edible flowers of the season (I found some wild pansies, or buy some if it’s for a party)

INSTRUCTIONS CRUST

Submitted Photo

Summer means: fresh berries! No matter what the occasion – a summer picnic in the park, a family gathering under the apple tree, a hip party on the terrace – this layered berry cheesecake is a lust for the eye and taste buds. Transitioning from a standard diet to a plant-based diet? This treat will help you stay motivated. Take and share this wonderful cheesecake to seduce and reduce the criticasters at your table. A small note before you start: soaking your nuts – especially when they have a brown peel – is essential for good digestion. By soaking you are removing the enzyme inhibitors and activating the life force in your nuts. You can use un-soaked nuts, but you will take longer to digest them and not be able to dig into a second slice.

TOOLS YOU NEED • • •

Food processor Blender (preferably a high speed blender) Springform pan of about 9 inches

PREP AHEAD • •

Soak 1 C of raw almonds overnight, rinse and dry until crisp (10-12 hours) Soak 3 cups of raw cashews in plenty of spring water for at least 4 hours (or overnight to make things easier)

INGREDIENTS CRUST • •

1 C of almonds (soaked and dried) 8-10 dates (add as needed, depending on how moist they are or first soak them for 20 minutes)

CHEESE FILLING • • • •

20

3,5 C of soaked cashews (your cashews expanded while soaking) 1/4 C of fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice 1 pound of mixed berries to choice (or just one berry to choice) 1/4 C light agave nectar (add to taste if needed)

• • • •

Place the almonds in a food processor and pulse into a course flour Add the dates and pulse until you create a sticky mass Layer your springform with some kitchen foil or baking paper Press the dough firmly into the springform

INSTRUCTIONS CHEESECAKE • • • • • • • • • • • •

Blend half of the “cheese” ingredients – except for the coconut oil – until smooth (they will look a bit shiny when they are smooth) Add half of the coconut oil at low speed (if possible). Don’t blend longer than needed Pour the mixture into the springform and spread evenly Blend the second half of your cashews until very smooth Keep enough berries to the side to decorate the cake Add the rest of your berries to the second half of the nuts and blend until smooth Now add the rest of the coconut oil at slow speed (if possible) Pour the berry mixture on top of the white layer and spread evenly Arrange the berries on top Cover up and let sit overnight in the refrigerator Next day, pick some edible flowers in your garden (or buy them in a deli) and make your cake look like a million Share and smile

TIPS • • • •

• • •

If you want fruit inside of your cake as well, stir some berries gently in by hand If you can’t wait a night, you can place the cake in the freezer for 1 hour (set the timer) Experiment with different kinds of fruit and have fun A nice variation is replacing the nuts with avocado. In that case, use 1/4 C more coconut oil Leftovers stay well in the fridge for 4-5 days. If you used raspberries on top, check them for mold Make it a system to soak and completely dry a backup of almond nuts every week or 2 weeks: you can store them easily in glass jars Pack some pieces in a fancy box and take it to your next meeting Success guaranteed

NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT: EACH ONE TELL ONE RAISING DENSE BREAST TISSUE AWARENESS FOR EARLY BREAST CANCER DETECTION; PROVIDING SUPPORT TO BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS Submitted by Heather Reimer, Founder of Each One Tell One

Submitted photo: Each One Tell One’s 2016 “Breast Cancer 2 Bikini” competition

On October 1, 2013, Heather Reimer launched a Facebook page called “Each One Tell One” with the hope to increase the awareness of dense breast tissue and the potential dangers of having it. After being diagnosed with breast cancer only 8 months after a clear mammogram, Heather’s good friend experienced the same miss. Heather was then motivated to create a movement.

To spread the message of “know your density,” Heather and Wendy presented at numerous venues, both locally and nationally, sharing their story of survivorship and loss. From their speaking engagements and the Each One Tell One movement, at least six known cases of breast cancer in Northern Nevada women have been discovered, and they are all alive today because of it!

Heather was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer (grade 3 triple negative, stage 3) in late 2011. As she had always been told to, Heather had a mammogram when she turned 40. She was notified of a clean/clear mammogram (in other words… cancer free). Later in the year, in order to complete her wellness points for her employer’s wellness program, she opted for a whole breast ultrasound. This additional screening discovered that Heather had breast cancer, which had been there all along… it was hidden on her mammogram because she has dense breast tissue. Following extensive treatment to rid herself of cancer (bi-lateral mastectomy with reconstruction, eight surgeries and 17 weeks of dose dense chemotherapy), Heather learned that a dear friend also found a lump in her breast only 4 months after her “clear” mammogram, later being diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, learning that three large tumors were missed.

On October 1, 2015, Heather and Wendy moved Each One Tell One to an official 501(c) (3) nonprofit to further their mission of educating women about their breast density.

Heather then partnered with Wendy Damonte, who lost her mother to cancer. Wendy was an advocate and voice for all by testifying in support of Nevada Assembly Bill 147 in front of the Health and Human Services committee at the Nevada Legislature. Governor Brian Sandoval signed this bill into law in 2013. AB 147 makes it mandatory for physicians to inform women of their breast tissue type. This information is important because dense breast tissue is more prone to develop breast cancer, and tumors are harder to see on a mammogram for women with dense breasts. Wendy’s mom had a similar story to Heather’s, as she too had a clean mammogram and then, 6 months later, she was diagnosed with end stage cancer. She had four tumors in her left breast, one in her neck, and of the 54 lymph nodes that were surgically removed, 38 of them were cancerous. Wendy doesn’t believe her mother died of breast cancer, she believes she died because she had dense breasts. Had she known that she had dense breasts, she would have fought for additional screening that would have detected her cancer earlier – with time for treatment, she would likely be alive today.

Healthy Beginnings | August 2017

In 2016, Each One Tell One launched “Breast Cancer 2 Bikini.” This program was specifically designed for breast cancer survivors, allowing these women to take their lives back after cancer. Eighteen survivors trained for a NPC fitness competition, all appearing on stage, some even winning in their category! This was a life changing experience for these women, and the program is now moving through its 2nd year with another round of amazing breast cancer survivors. Through the “Breast Cancer 2 Bikini” program, Each One Tell One created a powerful art exhibit featuring the women and their scars of survival. Beyond the Ribbon was an emotional part of the journey, spotlighting the survivors and sharing their intimate stories of survivorship. The ladies were inspired to be photographed in black and white to share that the only evidence left after “Breast Cancer 2 Bikini” was their scars. The 2017 “Breast Cancer 2 Bikini” program concludes at the Best of the West Classic NPC competition at the Grand Sierra Resort on Saturday, October 7. Twenty survivors will be participating in the contest. Our mission is simple, Each One... Tell One… give a voice to each person to tell their friends, family and neighbors the importance of knowing their breast density, and offer education about additional screening options. It’s every woman’s right to know her density. For more information, visit www.EachOneTellOne.com or call 888-870-2266.

Beyond the Ribbon was an emotional part of the journey, spotlighting the survivors and sharing their intimate stories of survivorship. Here are a few of the survivors, their stories and their scars:

Lori Connolly You are stronger than you know. I was told to ring the bell as I left my last chemo treatment to celebrate my victory. As the room cheered, I left feeling totally lost. What now? My body was not the one I knew before surgeries and treatments entered my life. What’s more, I had no idea how to reclaim my health and lifestyle. I remember asking my oncologist why I didn’t have a “team” like I kept reading about in articles. Where is my nutritionist, my dietician, my counselor? Turns out, I was going to have to do the research and find any resources on my own. I tried the cancer fighting diets, the infrared saunas, the lymphatic massages, the support groups, the supplements, the exercise groups... You are stronger than you know. While I knew about the side effects associated with cancer treatments, no one ever talked about the long-term recovery. Through trial and error, I started to find what worked for me to regain my health and ability to return to work. Slowly but surely I was coming back to life, but I wasn’t the Lori I wanted to be. I will be forever grateful for the “Breast Cancer 2 Bikini” program. It provided me with a much-needed opportunity to combine nutrition, exercise and an incredible support system. It pushed me beyond the limits I thought I could achieve at my age, much less post illness. I became stronger not only physically, but also in spirit. When I look at my photo, I see a strong woman who is confident and ready for her next chapter in life!

Heather Reimer Nearly a year after being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, I was done. I finished 8 rounds of dose dense chemotherapy. I lost all my hair, 35 lbs and my left breast. I had a new breast surgically created and a new name, “survivor.” I survived breast cancer. Being a breast cancer survivor was the most amazing feeling of my life. I was brave, strong and I was alive! Well, that is not what happened and that was not how I felt. I have long disliked the label survivor. It feels like a final destination when I needed a beginning. I can’t sugar coat who I was post cancer. Depressed would be an understatement. Road kill –that might be a good description. When you pass by a dead animal on the road and the animal doesn’t look, smell or act anything like it was when it was alive. Yes, road kill. Road kill may seem a bit harsh, but it is the real story. I felt guilty that I wasn’t happier to be done with treatment and to have survived breast cancer. Following about 6 months of feeling devastated I woke up and decided I needed to do something drastic. That turned into a 15-week fitness journey that landed me on stage at a fitness competition. This event was well outside of my comfort zone. My journey to the stage gave me back what cancer had taken away, and more. I never would have imagined that the training would take me through a mental, physical and emotional path that seemingly paralleled my breast cancer treatment. It is difficult to communicate, but taking my body back through physical training and mental determination was a gift I don’t think could have come from any doctor or support group. It challenged me mentally and ignited my spirit. It was a gift I had to give and do for myself. I feel like me again.

Beyond the Ribbon was an emotional part of the journey, spotlighting the survivors and sharing their intimate stories of survivorship. Here are a few of the survivors, their stories and their scars:

Jamie DeBates My diagnosis came at the age of 39. I had been healthy, had a clean baseline mammogram, and then one day at a traffic light felt a “pinch” in my breast. That started the rollercoaster that turned into a diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer, which catapulted me and my family through 6 months of chemotherapy, a bi-lateral mastectomy, severe weight loss and complete hair loss. Before treatment, I would have described myself spiritually as “agnostic” – I knew there was something out there, but I wasn’t quite sure what it was. Looking back now, I am convinced that “pinch” I felt, which got this ball rolling, was from my guardian angel. Without that pinch, who knows where I would have wound up? The triple negative diagnosis was so scary for me. Everything I found was nothing more than a death sentence. I couldn’t find people to connect with who had my specific type and thrived and survived after treatment. No matter how positive I tried to be, the fear of recurrence, or worse, death, was always looming. Well, after my treatment, it was still a nagging shameful secret in the back of my mind. Every. Single. Day. Until very recently... I participated in the “Breast Cancer 2 Bikini” program and transformed my body into the picture of health. I was putting my health first and I was eating well, working out routinely and committing to something bigger than myself. This was an extremely tough process mentally, but I know the physical changes I experienced allowed me to visibly SEE myself as healthy and thriving for the first time in years. I woke up one day and realized I hadn’t thought about death or recurrence in the last several days! What a gift that was to me, and it took seeing with my eyes to believe in my heart. Now here I am, 4 years post treatment and I am changed. My body has scars, but they do not define me. I survived cancer, but that is not who I am. I am a funny, loving, caring woman. I am much braver than I was in the past; I know there is nothing that can compare to the battle I’ve been through, so why not take some risks! Personally, professionally and physically. I’m freer with my compliments and am not afraid to show my love to those around me. It took this disease to give me the experience... the experience was the only way that I could truly appreciate the life I was given and those around me. I am not grateful for cancer, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Sure, I could beat myself up for not seeing what was right in front of me before, but why do that? Cancer beat me up enough. I’m going to focus on loving myself and those around me. If I could sit with myself in that doctor’s office the first day I would say this: Honor yourself and your feelings. You’re going to get “down,” and that’s ok. It’s ok to ask for help, and accept it willingly. If you need to cry, then cry. Then pick yourself up and fight. YOU ARE GOING TO BE OK!

Jenifer Pokorski No evidence of disease, a.k.a. NED! After 4 long years of battling cancer! That’s like music to my ears! Nothing is more terrifying than hearing that you have stage 4 triple negative breast cancer. Getting diagnosed was filled with 3 solid years of treatments and weekly visits to oncologists in-and-out of town. Every week turned into every-other-week, then into once a month and now every 3-6 months! I found myself wondering what now? I still felt lost and alone. The doctors just throw you out into the world with no guidance… On your own with no manual on how to live life after cancer. Going back to the old me wasn’t possible because, who is that person? She doesn’t exist anymore and, falling into the “new” norm, well not sure what that is either. I had a hard time dealing with the newness of my changed and scarred body. I couldn’t do things I once did and that was frustrating, especially since I gained a total of 70 lbs during all of my treatments! People don’t understand the inner heartbreaks and struggles that so many of us survivors face! Some would say, “Well, good thing that’s over!” Or, “At least you get a new set of boobs!” One day I was asked to participate in “Breast Cancer 2 Bikini.” My first thought: “UHHH, NOOO! I am not putting on a bikini!” My second thought: “HELL NO!” But after being talked into it, which I won’t lie, took a little coaxing, I decided to participate and it turned out to be one of the best most amazing decisions I have ever made. I worked hard, lost 52 lbs and met the most amazing group of ladies who were all survivors, too! We laughed, we cried, we worked out and we leaned on each other for support – overall taking my life back in a way I never thought would be possible. I feel like I’m living life again, not just going through the motions. Although I would never want or choose to have cancer, it has given me some of the most amazing opportunities that I could have ever imagined! I have met people who I can call lifelong friends, who have opened my eyes to the beauty that is all around me. I found my inner strength in order to survive, and it feels great. THERE IS LIFE AFTER CANCER!

WHY EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC? By Patricia Hudson

Does your toddler LOVE to dance when you play music? Does your 3-4-year-old LOVE to tell you about every little thing they hear? Does your baby stare longingly into your eyes when you sing a lullaby? That is the powerful effect music has on your precious bundle of joy! Your little one as young as 4 months old can begin music classes! We talk to our babies from the time they are in the womb because that helps them learn to speak. This same principle holds true for early childhood music classes. If your baby is exposed to rhythm, pitch and a variety of age appropriate instruments from a young age, then music will become second nature to them. Studies from around the globe have shown that from a very early age music lessons can have profound long-term effects that include: improved language development, higher standardized test scores in math, improved graduation rates, and even decreased likelihood of drug and alcohol use. Music study also awakens and stimulates neural pathways in the brain that are associated with higher forms of intelligence, such as abstract thinking, empathy, mathematics and science. Music’s melodic and rhythmic patterns provide exercise for the brain and help develop memory. Remember singing the ABC song to learn your ABCs? Studying music helps children establish good listening habits, which are essential for achievement in school.

THE BENEFITS OF BABY MASSAGE By Erin Hansen

What is baby massage? Baby massage is when a parent or caregiver uses any set of intentional massage strokes to relax, soothe or simply connect with their baby. In the past, massage has often been seen as a luxury item, but it is now taking its rightful place amongst other health care practices such as chiropractic care and acupuncture. As awareness of the many benefits of massage expands, so does the interest in massage for adults, children and, yes, even babies. But my baby’s muscles aren’t sore, why would she need a massage? There are many benefits of massage other than relieving muscular soreness. Scanning the list of benefits of baby massage on the International Association of Infant Massage website, you’ll find that baby massage can:

increase body awareness relieve gas and colic ease pain associated with teething reduce stress hormones improve sleep patterns

It is typically one of these five main benefits that draws families into a baby massage class. Parents do find each of these benefits helpful in their day-to-day lives with a baby, but what parents talk about the most after taking a baby massage class is being able to read their baby’s cues more quickly and more accurately. How can massage help me understand my baby’s cues? Baby massage classes help parents listen and look more closely at baby cues of interest and disinterest. As parents are guided through a stroke-by-stroke massage, they will quickly tune in to which strokes and what pressure their baby likes. Massage creates an opportunity for new parents to concentrate solely on the wants of their little one. This kind of deep listening and observing will assist parents in addressing the needs of their baby in all other settings as well. Baby massage can be a great tool for new parents as they adjust to their new life with baby.

ESSENTIAL OILS SPOTLIGHT: BACK TO SCHOOL IDEAS FOR STRONG IMMUNITY By Elaine Brooks

Getty Images

Summer is winding down, and it’s nearly time for the kids to return to school. Oh, boy! Get ready for the sniffles and coughs and sore throats and all the fun stuff that gets

passed around at school. But, what if you start building up the immune system now, and keep all those unhealthy critters at bay?

Do You Have Questions About Vitamins or Herbs?

A good start to building immunity is to use a combination of oils to disinfect those areas that are touched often. Some favorites to combine with water include lemon, lime or lemongrass with pine, rosemary and sage. You can also add patchouli, tea tree or eucalyptus. Adding a few drops to your laundry is also a great idea. I use lemon and lemongrass in my dryer to soften clothes by putting a few drops on some wool balls, but you can also use new tennis balls, too. Or, add any of the above in combination for a nice scent and softer clothes, without using dryer sheets that are loaded with chemicals.

Using a spray mister or diffuser with essential oils in your home is also a great idea when someone does bring home the dreaded cold, or any respiratory type disease. You can combine 2 ounces of distilled water, 25 drops of lemon, 25 drops of clove, 25 drops of sage and you can add 10 drops of colloidal silver for an even better effect. If your diffuser is larger, just add more water. Another option includes 2 ounces of distilled water, 25 drops of peppermint, 25 drops of clove, 13 drops of lemon, 12 drops of ginger and 10 drops of colloidal silver. If breathing issues persist, some Tei-fu oil, a Chinese formula that dates back over a thousand years, can be put on a tissue and then inhaled. This will help to clear sinus or respiratory problems. For sinus headaches or a stuffy nose, put a few drops on the palms of your hands, rub them together and cup hands over the nose and mouth – not eyes – then inhale. You can also rub a drop on or under the nose. Do avoid getting into the eyes. Tei-fu can also be used for muscle pain or sprains by rubbing 2-3 drops into the painful area. It can also treat a nasty cough in children, just use 1-2 drops internally with water or rub 2 drops on their chest so that it absorbs (they can also inhale it for better breathing). For stomach pains or vomiting put 1-2 drops in water or rub 2 drops into the throat area. It really is an all-around medicine chest in a bottle. FIBROMYALGIA:

PUTTING TOGETHER THE PIECES, PART III By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P., and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

Getty Images

So, how do you treat fibromyalgia so that the patient can obtain a consistently successful result – defined as having a 75-90 percent improvement in their symptoms in 4-6 months – and then possess the tools to maintain that result with as few supplements and medications as possible? The solution is complex, so here’s the CliffsNotes® version. No two fibromyalgia patients are the same. All fit into the PTSD, fight-flight, emotional trauma, Hashimoto’s, gut and peripheral neuropathy paradigm described in parts one and two of this series. To successfully treat the fibromyalgia patient, you must first determine what parts of this clinical picture are relevant to each person’s individual case before executing a treatment plan. This is vital to not only being able to obtain a successful long-term outcome, but to deal with each individual’s highly nuanced and different reactions to treatment along the way. We accomplish this in our office by a fibromyalgia-specific history – a 20-page long check sheet exploring all symptoms of all organs and organ symptoms, along with a 3-hour comprehensive neurological and general symptoms exam. This procedure then leads to the very

28

targeted and specific testing that provides much of the data needed to execute an organized approach to that person’s case. There should be no guessing as to how to treat the case once this data is gathered. The initial therapeutic attack must first take place simultaneously on the brain and intestines. As for the brain – the critical component is to understand the fight-flight mechanism that is flooding this system with stress hormones, and can cause all or part, or perpetuate, any of the following symptoms in the fibro patient: brain fog, short-term memory loss, can’t fall asleep or stay asleep, fatigue, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, chronic sinus and lung infections, asthma, acid indigestion, poor gallbladder function, leaky gut, food sensitivities, chronic UTIs, chronic cystitis, chronic constipation, decreased estrogen levels, menstrual abnormalities, low libido, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and chronic IBS. This chronic fight-flight mechanism is treated by brain rehabilitation exercises based off of that patient’s neuro-exam, and by correcting all aspects of physiology that alter blood sugar, cause inflammation or decrease oxygen to the brain.

Healthy Beginnings | August 2017

“LESS is more. Less supplements, less drugs, less (but not no) exercise. Fibro sufferers are historically sensitive to herbs, supplements, medications and too much exertion. In the end, you should be able to maintain your gains with as few as three supplements or less, an effective home brain rehab program (mine is 3-4 minutes 3x/day) and a patient specific dietary program.”

The things that cause these alterations in brain chemistry generally start in the gut. And, you can’t fix the gut if it’s being flooded by stress hormones causing perpetual leaky gut. So, you treat the brain and the gut at the same time so that helping one helps the other and, more importantly, prevents them from sabotaging the success you can have by only treating one at a time and having them sabotage each other’s responses to treatment. To treat the gut, you calm down the fight-flight stress response to find out what’s causing its metabolic problems (SIBO, parasites, virus, yeast, celiac disease, etc.), fix these problems (this can be done mostly without medications), heal the leaky gut and lastly determine the person’s food sensitivities. The protocol is to be done EXACTLY in that order. This approach massively decreases the general inflammation and antibodies that are wreaking havoc with virtually all of the fibromyalgia patient’s symptoms starting with the brain and immune system. As for your Hashimoto’s – this approach massively reduces the immune response to the thyroid and, in many instances, allows the thyroid to regain function without medications. But, if the thyroid doesn’t regain function because it is too damaged, you can now introduce thyroid medication and properly dose it so that it is effective in managing thyroid hormone levels.

Once you have followed this paradigm, if there are still remaining symptoms or organs that have not responded by dampening stress hormones, autoimmune attacks and correcting gut function, it will now become obvious why that is and what needs to be done. Example – estrogen remains low. You now can attack that directly with herbs, botanicals or HRT. But, in truth, there’s usually not many issues left to address after calming the stress response, rehabbing brain function and decreasing immune response. And most importantly for the fibro patient: LESS is more. Less supplements, less drugs, less (but not no) exercise. Fibro sufferers are historically sensitive to herbs, supplements, medications and too much exertion. In the end, you should be able to maintain your gains with as few as three supplements or less, an effective home brain rehab program (mine is 3-4 minutes 3x/day) and a patient specific dietary program. There is no one size fits all diet for the fibro patient. I wish I could write so much more, but space is limited. THE DREAMS OF A DYING WOMAN, PART III By Andy Drymalski, EdD Lila (not her actual name) is a woman in her early 70s who had a number of dreams that hinted at her coming death by cancer. At the time of the dreams discussed in this series, she did not know that she had cancer. The dreams that follow occurred approximately 1 month before her diagnosis and 3 months before her death.

I went to see Maggie at her place. Some other family members were there. I was in my robe and nightgown, going to visit just a few minutes. I was going to share some recipes with her. She lives more scattered and disheveled than I do, so we had to clear a place at her dining table where we could work. She gave me a piece of cake but I somehow knocked it on the floor and it crumbled all over the place. I cleaned it up and went back to the table. Maggie had cleaned the table and put all our things away. I gathered and started again with my project. Maggie’s two daughters came over with their children. I managed to knock their cake over on the floor also and stumbled through it making a big mess! I cleaned it up and carried the crumbs out back for the birds. Then I fell on the steps going back in the house. I was very frustrated. Maggie said not to worry about it, but I think she and the others were perturbed. We talked about me being in my nightclothes and coming over in the middle of the day. Then the girls left with their kids. In this dream Lila is trying to do something she greatly enjoyed, which was spending time and sharing recipes with a friend. But a couple of odd things are occurring. First of all, she is wearing her nightclothes during the day. The second is that she

kept spilling and making a mess of the cake she and her friend were about to share. Lila was not one to wear pajamas unless she was going to bed or she was sick. Was her unconscious telling her that she was more sick than she realized?

“A circle also suggests centeredness. It is the simplest form of a mandala, and thus a symbol of wholeness. Taken together, the dreams might indicate that Lila will no longer be taking her meals in the earthly realm, but in the Beyond.” She wants to share cake with her friend and her friend’s daughters. The cake is a kind of communion, a symbol of emotional and spiritual nourishment. But a mess is repeatedly made of it. None of the cake makes it into anyone’s mouth except for those of the birds. If Lila had been having conflict with her friend, then perhaps the dream could be a reflection of this. But this was not the case. They were as close as ever. The overall feeling of the dream is that something has gone very awry, for the food she would have shared with friends is now suitable only for the birds, symbols of the spirit and omens of death in many cultures. In addition, she is repeatedly tripping over things as if she is losing the ability to move easily in this world. Two weeks later, Lila had this dream:

Dave, my ex-husband, is in my kitchen. I know not why. The kitchen is void of all the homey and special things – mostly bare. The kitchen table is round with the two leaves missing. Xavier and I typically have the leaves in the table so that it is larger and of an oblong shape. Lila’s ex-husband was deceased. He appears in the kitchen of the house where she lives with her boyfriend Xavier. It is appropriate to ask why a member of the “dead” is paying Lila a visit at this time of her life. The kitchen is mostly bare. Rooms without furnishings and accessories were a recurring theme in Lila’s dreams during the last year of her life. They give the sense of her having moved out, of a place no longer being home. In the dream the extension leaves have been removed from the table, changing its shape from an ellipse to a circle. Not only is the table smaller now, but an ellipse – if you recall your algebra – has two foci whereas a circle has only one, its center. Thus, two is being reduced to one, just as her relationship with Xavier will soon be reduced from two to one. However there is a hopeful element to the dream. A circle also suggests centeredness. It is the simplest form of a mandala, and thus a symbol of wholeness. Taken together, the dreams might indicate that Lila will no longer be taking her meals in the earthly realm, but in the Beyond.

WHAT IS YOGA NIDRA?

By Lauri Glenn In this state, our brains go into Theta brain wave patterns, which define a deep meditation, dreaming and the access point to the subconscious. The subconscious governs nearly 95 percent of our habits, patterns, behavior, etc. However, in Yoga Nidra we also maintain some Alpha brainwaves, which define light meditation or consciousness. By bringing these two states together, we can begin to tap into our subconscious patterning that may serve us poorly, bring it into consciousness and unwind it. These are powerful tools for changing and recognizing subconscious patterning, and to continue our mental growth. Secondly, in Yoga Nidra we tap into the parasympathetic response, or the rest/digest/heal part of our nervous system. This is opposed to the more common fight/flight/freeze response, where we spend the majority of our lives. This state allows us to maximize our ability to process, heal and rejuvenate so that we can live a more joyful and vibrant life.

In a nutshell, Yoga Nidra is a deeply relaxing, healing and empowering form of guided meditation, done lying down. No yoga experience is needed for this deeply enriching practice. The word “Nidra” means sleep, however it is far from the unconscious, “checked out” version of sleep you might think of normally. On the contrary, Yoga Nidra is actually a state of consciousness in which the practitioner is deeply relaxed, nearing sleep, yet remains awake and aware.

ASK THE EXPERT:

DO YOU SUFFER FROM FREQUENT HEARTBURN OR GERD? By Michael Murray, MD, FACS

If you feel you may be a candidate for surgery, talk with your doctor about EsophyX™Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF). This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that creates an anti-reflux valve where your stomach and esophagus connect. The procedure is performed in under an hour, in most cases, and typically requires just one night in the hospital. Most patients feel fine by the next day. Best of all, after about 4 weeks, many people stop experiencing heartburn completely. There are no incisions, and patients can usually get back to normal activities within days.*

Getty Images

What Is GERD? Frequent heartburn, also known as GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder) occurs when the one-way valve between the esophagus and stomach loosens and stops functioning properly. This can result in the “reflux” of the stomach’s contents into the esophagus and a sour or bitter liquid feeling in the throat or mouth. Heartburn is described as a fiery feeling in the chest. What Are the Common Symptoms and Treatments for GERD? The most common symptom is heartburn, but others include regurgitation, hoarseness, belching, sore throat, asthma-like symptoms, chest pain or discomfort, excessive throat clearing, persistent cough, bloating and burning in the mouth or throat. If left untreated over time, GERD can cause permanent changes to the esophagus lining that can lead to cancer. In many cases, GERD can be relieved through diet and lifestyle changes. Talk to your doctor about foods to avoid and other prevention measures, such as losing weight, if needed, and waiting a few hours before lying down after meals. If GERD is chronic, medications may be required, often throughout the rest of one’s life. Can I Benefit from Therapeutic Intervention? Surgery may be an option for those who do not respond well to medications, or as an alternative to a lifetime of taking medication.

THE BENEFITS OF LAVENDER OIL By Sue Bukowy, W.A., C.A. Did you know that lavender means “to wash” in Latin? Maybe that is why you can find it in a myriad of bath and beauty products touted to be relaxing and calming. It is well known that the scent of lavender can bring a sense of calm, and can even aid in getting a restful night’s sleep. Due to its chemical makeup and soothing properties, lavender is also very effective when used topically on injuries such as cuts, scrapes, blisters and sunburns, as well as sprains. I use lavender and melaleuca (also known as tea tree oil) together on bug bites to soothe the itch and pain.* Lavender, along with lemon and peppermint, may help aid in the relief of seasonal discomforts. As a double treat add a drop or two of each to your tea and enjoy. A couple of drops of lavender rubbed on your temples and base of your skull is relaxing and can aid in reduction of a headache.* Lavender with citrus oil while studying can help with focus. Putting a drop of lavender onto your sleeve to help reduce test anxiety, and it may assist in recall of your studies.* For more information, call Sue at 775-530-4484 or visit mydoterra.com/suebukowy. *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. SILENT BUT DEADLY By Dr. Tony C. Jensen

Immunology at the University of Florida. “But if immune cells start to overreact, that inflammation can be totally directed against us.” This type of harmful, chronic inflammation can have a number of causes. It can, and often does, occur for years before it exists at levels sufficient to be apparent or clinically significant. How long it has been smoldering really determines the degree of severity of a disease and often the prognosis, assuming the inflammation can be controlled. Take a look at this list of diseases and their relationship with inflammation: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

I know what you’re thinking… but I’m not going to be talking about that. Instead, I will be discussing the effects of inflammation, how deadly it is on the body and the causes of it. Acute inflammation is the body’s response to outside threats like stress, infection, wounds or toxic chemicals. When the immune system senses one of these dangers, it responds by activating proteins meant to protect cells and tissues. “In a healthy situation, inflammation serves as a good friend to our body,” according to Mansour Mohamadzadeh, Ph.D., director of the Center for Inflammation and Mucosal

When we’re dealing with stress or impending danger, the body dumps adrenaline, which helps with a life-threatening situation. Stress over a long period of time can cause C-reactive protein levels to be constantly elevated, which can be associated with many chronic health conditions. Inflammation in the brain may be linked to depression and associated symptoms such as low mood, lack of appetite and poor sleep. The skin is the largest organ of the body and when things aren’t going right inside your gut, they will usually manifest

Psoriasis, for example, is an inflammatory condition that occurs when the immune system causes skin cells to grow too quickly. Inflammation can interfere with bone growth and even promote increased bone loss. In the lungs, inflammation can cause fluid accumulation and narrowing of the airways, making it difficult to breathe. This contributes to infections, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. These are all characterized by inflammation in the lungs, which are caused by smoking and chemicals. Periodontitis, which is an inflammatory disease that affects the soft and hard structures that support the teeth, if left unfixed, can be associated with heart disease and dementia. Unhealthy eating and obesity is a major cause of inflammation in the body, which can lead to insulin resistance (which increases your odds of getting diabetes). The best solution is losing weight. Chronic inflammation has been linked to cancers of the lung, esophagus, cervix and digestive tract, among others. “When immune cells begin to produce inflammation, immune regulation becomes deteriorated and it creates an optimal environment for cancer cells to grow,” said Mohamadzadeh. Inflammation in the joints can cause serious damage called rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. People with arthritis experience pain and stiffness in their inflamed joints making it hard to function in daily living. Chronic gut inflammation can cause the immune cells to react to the bacteria, which attack the digestive tract itself. An autoimmune condition known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, is a part of chronic inflammation. Neuritis means inflammation of the nerve. It may be due to a number of causes including mechanical trauma, chemical injury, nutritional deficiencies, infections, inherited disorders and systemic diseases. Sensory nerves may present with numbness, tingling, abnormal sensations or pain. Motor nerves are affected, and symptoms may involve muscle weakness or even paralysis in severe cases. Some nerves are mixed nerves, meaning that both sensory and motor fibers are affected leading to a complex of symptoms. In conclusion, one could argue that without inflammation, most disease would not even exist. So, do your part to cut as much inflammation as possible by eating better, having a healthy nervous system, working toward being less stressed and keeping yourself clear of infections – you’ll feel a lot better and possibly live longer. THE ART OF YOGA AND MOVEMENT FOR STRESS RELIEF By Angie Fraley The word “yoga” means many different things to different people. Some think in terms of form and techniques of bodies put in shapes while others think of stretching, meditation and breathing. Some people conjure images of arm balances, hand stands and splits while others think of sweat dripping off their bodies in heated classes. Most folks know of it as a form of exercise and relate it to spirituality, calmness and peace. Others think in terms of chanting, moving, holding and expressing energy while adhering to a way of living that leads one closer to stillness. While yoga offers many different forms to meet you where you’re at, the one thing that we can agree on is that more and more people are seeking yoga for stress relief. According to a study conducted by Yoga Alliance, out of the top five reasons people seek yoga, flexibility and stress relief were the top two.

Deep breathing into the low belly is a way to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system, which can relieve stress and alleviate tension. It’s where your relaxation mode exists and your internal organs get a chance to catch up on their own agenda of digesting, healing and repairing. When you allow yourself to settle into and hold restful yoga poses while focusing on the sensations of deep breaths, you give the mind a break from its pressing matters, busy thoughts, and to-do lists and assign it another job, called “relax.” This chance to rest in stillness and remain in the present moment leaves space for renewal of the body and mind to find your way to stress relief. Below are five simple restful poses to help alleviate stress when combined with attention to breath. Child’s Pose (Balasana) Child’s pose is an introspective resting posture that can be done with knees wide apart or together. Arms can also be placed reaching above your head or placed gently behind, whichever you find more comfort. The pose can also be supported by placing a prop behind the knees to ensure that you are comfortable.

When we don’t take the time to balance our very active lifestyles of work, responsibilities, deadlines and other overall demands of life with moments of quiet and introspective practices, physical, mental and emotional depletion can easily set in. This causes undue stress on overall health and a frazzled nervous system. By setting aside time (even 10-15 minutes a day) to practice yoga, you are essentially prioritizing time to allow yourself to slow down, tune in to your breath and restore equilibrium.

Standing Forward Fold (Uttanasana) Usually practiced as a hamstring stretch, this pose has the ability to alleviate tension in the neck and shoulders by bending the knees deeply so that the upper body rests on the low body. Let the head hang heavy (like a bowling ball on a string) to feel the release of holding the neck.

Corpse Pose (Savasana) Typically, Savasana is done at the end of a yoga practice. While this pose puts the body at ease and emphasizes total relaxation, it is meant to be done awake in a state of surrender. It is natural for the mind to resist the calm state of surrender in today’s busy environment, but like all things, it requires effort and practice. The more comfortable you are, the more you can relax. So, feel free to use props (such as a blanket) or place an eye pillow over the eyes.

Nowadays, the top concern when leaving your home is, “Do I have my cellphone charger?” and, “Where can I get plugged in?” otherwise, you may be doomed. The handheld devices have most everyone focused on electricity for accessing their data. This concept is also true when discussing your health. Yes, you need to get plugged in because the body is electric and, without good electricity, the body suffers a wide range of illnesses. Vast bodies of medical research over a century delve deep into the electrical aspects of health, and the future of medicine is focusing more to electrical solutions, rather than biochemical. Mounting evidence suggests that the Earth’s negative potential can create a stable internal bioelectrical environment for the normal functioning of all body systems. The Body Is Electric Your body requires electricity for proper function and to keep a constant supply of electricity (a.k.a. the flow of electrons). The body is both a battery that generates electricity from its own chemical processes and is a plug-in device to draw electrons from the Earth’s surface. We humans have a host of health issues that our fellow landbased mammals do not because we have created insulation (barriers) to our connection to the Earth by our modern footwear and housing. We no longer run around barefoot or sleep directly upon the Earth, which has had some great benefits to our health such as reduced exposures in bad weather and protection from injury and infection to our feet. Yet, we are paying a price for this ‘improved’ environment, which is the lack of being plugged in to get electrons from the Earth. Yes, horses are mammals that sometimes wear shoes, but they are steel, thus acting as a conductor. Where To Plug In To Charge Your Body Did Starbucks come to mind with the idea, “Hey, I can charge my phone and get a caffeine energy boost all in one!” Truth be known, caffeine depletes those powerful

Healthy Beginnings | August 2017

electrons, making you dependent upon the caffeine’s induced adrenaline buzz. You don’t need anything artificial – your body’s charging station is the Earth. Just place your bare feet on its surface and those electrons automatically flow into the body. Direct contact of skin to the ground works the best – no socks or stockings. A walk on the beach is even great exposure, as the surf submerges your feet and the lower legs with water filled with electrolytes, giving you more surface area contact. Acupuncture is a great source of electrons with the insertion of the steel needles, as electrons flow off the needle and into the body. Research conducted in the 1980s determined that the Acupuncture Meridians are comprised of several tissues: compartmentalized body fluids (blood in the blood vessels, cerebral spinal fluid) and the flow of electrons through tiny openings in the protein structure of the fascia tissue. That flow is increased where the fascia tissue has concentration of interstitial fluids (directly beneath the skin). There is a wide range of Earth grounding mats you can purchase to have in your home. The earliest versions of these mats emerged in the early 1900s for those living in city multi-story buildings. These mats were comprised of connecting a copper wire between steam radiant heaters (made of steel) or plumbing pipes (steel or copper) and your feet when sleeping. Things That Deplete Your Battery Did I mention caffeine? The way caffeine depletes your body of electrons is due to its diuretic action (stimulates urination) which causes potassium to be excreted and with the loss of potassium so too are its electrons. Potassium, like sodium (table

salt), is a critical electrolyte that keeps us alive. Other “depleters” include your footwear and where you live, of which both can be considered insulators. Before the 1960s production of rubbers and plastics, footwear was comprised of animal skins (leather that allows for some moisture) and centuries prior, bedding was straw (plant fiber allowing for moisture) and performed as conductors for the Earth’s electrons. Negative and judgmental thinking produce acids and the alkalizing minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium (electrolytes), which are used to neutralize the acids thus reducing electrons. How To Maintain Your Battery You need to maintain your battery’s chemistry and keep your terminals free of insulators. Salt baths work because the salts are the electrolytes. A diet dominated by green leafy vegetables is rich with electrolytes. Cocoa – yes, dark chocolate of 71 percent or higher (and little sugar) is rich with magnesium. Picnic blankets of cotton (not synthetics) are good conductors, and wear cotton clothing when you lean against a tree while reading a book. Plug In Daily What’s great about maintaining your body’s electrical device is that you increase your energy without using calories and overstimulating the nervous system. Getting plugged in is easy and enjoyable, so charge your battery with loving thoughts and a bit of chocolate while walking barefoot in the park. For more information, call Van Harding at Tahoe Neuro Healing at 530-536-5084 or visit www.TahoeNeuroHealing.com.

HALOTHERAPY – WHAT IS IT?

LOCAL SPA OFFERS THERAPEUTIC DEAD SEA SALT ROOM, REVIVES ANCIENT TREATMENT By Healthy Beginnings Staff

Sink into a comfortable chair, close your eyes, take a deep breath, relax and imagine that you are at the beach with a cool, salty breeze kissing your face. It’s easy to fall into this state of relaxation and tranquility when you’re at Reno’s Pinnacle Wellness Healing Spa, as the spa now offers Reno’s only dead sea salt cave – a softly lit salt room equipped with a salt generator – to offer those suffering with respiratory or skin conditions natural relief. Dead sea salt has low sodium content and is rich in magnesium, sodium and potassium. Halotherapy – or, salt therapy – emerged in Eastern Europe as early as 460 BC, as ancient Greeks reportedly inhaled salt water steam to ease respiratory conditions. Records also indicate that Medieval monks treated patients in salt caves and, in 1843, Polish physician Feliks Boczkowski noted the low rates of respiratory illnesses among salt miners and published his findings in “About the Breathing of Salt Dust.” Recent scientific research supporting the benefits of salt therapy is lacking. However, wellness and treatment centers across the United States are increasingly incorporating salt-infused environments to compliment other natural health modalities, and are seeing beneficial outcomes for those who use the therapy. Halotherapy is known to offer relief by reducing the inflammation of the lungs, killing bacteria and dislodging mucus that blocks the bronchioles, and is found to help ease health conditions such as asthma, allergies, bronchitis, sinus infections, psoriasis, acne, eczema, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, anxiety, depression and more. “We have such bad asthma and allergies here in Nevada, and I wanted a natural resource for people to be able to gravitate to, to be able to treat without inhalers and steroids,” said Kerri Brehler, owner of Pinnacle Wellness Healing Spa.
