pring is a time for renewal and rebirth, and the same can be said for Healthy Beginnings.

As we move into the spring, it is a time for growth and opportunity for Healthy Beginnings. Over the last few months, we have made changes to our team and staff in order to better support the potential of this magazine. With me now stepping in as publisher and manager, the focus is on making upgrades and in improving our overall publication. This added focus will allow us to continue to grow and develop Healthy Beginnings to reach new heights. Looking ahead to the future of the magazine, we are working on several changes and updates to improve Healthy Beginnings. Initially, we are seeking to improve the look and feel of the magazine. This will include updates to some of the design of the publication, an increase in the use of photos for our stories, and working with our content providers to improve the overall product. The goal of Healthy Beginnings is to support the community and to provide a home for content and viewpoints about all forms of health and wellness. We will be seeking to add additional content, and later this year, we are looking to begin to offer events and other programs to our community. In order for us to make these positive changes, we need your support, both from our readers and our advertisers. We can’t succeed without you. With that, we would like to begin publishing reader letters in the magazine. If you have an opinion, or a question, we would like to hear it. If you read an article that you agreed with, disagreed with, or found interesting, please let us know. These letters will be run in our magazine and will serve as a space for you to share your opinions about our content and direction. For businesses that see value in having this magazine in the market, please consider advertising and marketing in our publication. We offer a wide range of marketing capabilities and options that can be used to help you grow your business. Please feel free to contact me any time at brogers@hbmag.com to talk about opportunities.

Many ways to alleviate pain

UTILIZING NEURAL THERAPY AS A TREATMENT SYSTEM FOR CHRONIC PAIN, ILLNESS By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD / Practitioner of Homeopathic Medicine

N

eural therapy has been around since 1905 when Alfred Einhorn discovered procaine, a local anesthetic that also restores function to damaged nerves.

From there, the Hunicke brothers in Germany led the way by injecting procaine in every imaginable place in the human body during the 1920s, through the 1950s. This is a non-toxic therapy — of note, we test everybody on our homeopathic computers to make sure it agrees energetically.

Headache treatments Run-of-the-mill musculoskeletal headaches respond to neural therapy in about 30 seconds. Using the smallest needle in medicine, we inject a small amount of specially prepared procaine with a marvelous homeopathic remedy called “Spascupreel” from the company Heel, based in Baden-Baden, Germany. Spascupreel is injected into two acupuncture points, two fingerbreadths off the occipital notch on each side in the back of the head. This is not painful. Usually, headache pain is resolved instantly.

Beside headaches, neural therapy relieves sinus pain, asthma attacks, tooth pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, low back pain, hip pain, gallbladder attacks, kidney stone pain, knee pain, arthritis pain and Dupuytren’s’ contractures pain in minutes.”

Although this therapy won’t resolve a three-day migraine headache, it will mitigate the more severe symptoms. Migraines respond well to intravenous magnesium and nutrients. The herbs Butterbur and Feverfew can also head off migraines. Bioidentical progesterone cream rubbed behind the ears and down the trapezius muscles is also helpful for headaches, as well as applying it on the inner arms. Further, headaches unrelieved by pain medication may be caused by Toxoplasmosis, from the cat fecal parasite, and can be killed by antibiotics. Regarding magnesium, I prefer magnesium glycinate. It not only prevents high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes, it also is a muscle relaxant that can prevent tension headaches.

Other kinds of treatments Treating and resolving chronic infections such as Lyme disease and its co-infections can be critical for treating joint and muscle pain. Gut inflammation causes many kinds of pain. As such, avoiding food allergens, and treating fungus infections; Candida; small intestinal bacterial overgrowth; and mold and parasitic infestations will reduce leaky gut syndrome, which can cause pain in distant sites in the body.

Occasionally some pain may remain over the temples, above the eyes or the top of the head. Another ¼ cc of the procaine mix over the tender points will generally stop the remainder of the pain. We also look for painful acupuncture points

on top of the shoulders and place a little procaine mix in the skin (bubbles) on painful points.

Homeopathic remedies are great for many kinds of pain. You can use Arnica for any pain, and Rhus Tox (short for toxicodendron) for joint and ligament pain that is improved by movement. There are several homeopathic options to help relieve headache and migraine pain. GETTY IMAGES

Hypericum frequently relieves neuropathy pain, and you can use Gelsemium for paralysis, and Calcaria phosphorica for non-healing bones, among other remedies. Combination homeopathic creams such as Inflammyr are great for bruises, arthritis and chronic pain. Further, castor oil packs are soothing for all musculoskeletal and joint pains. Beside headaches, neural therapy relieves sinus pain, asthma attacks, tooth pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, low back pain, hip pain, gallbladder attacks, kidney stone pain, knee pain, arthritis pain and Dupuytren’s’ contractures pain in minutes. Citizen pain

BREAKING DOWN THE THREE TYPES OF PAIN HUMANS CAN EXPERIENCE By Corazon Ibarra, MD, HMD, and Melvin Ibarra Nario, MD, HMD

P

ain is a sensation that may be a signal that something is brewing in our tissues or organs. It is a sign that we must pay attention to, and if left untreated, it might lead to a serious condition. In our opinion, this is the alarm that the brain is interpreting through the nerve fibers that our body is in disarray. There are categories of pain; below is a breakdown of each:

Spiritual Pain This is the pain emanating from the inner core of our being that can only be remedied through satisfying our spiritual needs, which is usually difficult to subjectively define. This is not based on religion, but rather it is one’s faith toward a Higher Being (example: the pain of emptiness). There are four types of spiritual pain, which the late pastor James H. Bell detailed in a 2014 blog post, “Hope for the “Walking Wounded”: 1. Meaning Pain: significance of our existence. 2. Forgiveness Pain: To start with, the most challenging person to forgive is not someone else but ourselves. We had been “let down” at some point in our lives by others or our own, and that leads to our diminished spirit. 3. Relatedness Pain: This is the strong sense of separation from loved ones, a job, a role or identity. It often happens when a role change occurs, like from a caregiver to the one taken care of, or when we can no longer perform our job that had defined our existence. 4. Hopelessness Pain: Referred to as the “terminal” illness of the human spirit. Sometimes the loss of hope is not connected to one particular event, but rather to a cumulative set of losses. This is the worst pain of all four types.

Emotional or Psychological Pain Lower back pain is the most common form of pain that afflicts humans. GETTY IMAGES

6

It is an unpleasant feeling of non-physical origin. It is a wide range of experiences characterized as a subjective awareness of negative changes in the self, functions and feelings. This pain shares almost a similar path with the physical pain in their underlying neurological mechanism. On assessment, it was noted emotional pain affects more areas of the brain compared to physical pain, thus making it more detrimental.

HEALTHY BEGINNINGS • April 2018

It is sometimes hard to delineate which one is purely psychological or physical. Quite often, emotional pain progresses to physical pain.

Physical Pain This is most frequently referred to as something that hurts in one’s body and is associated with damage to tissues or organs. It can be caused by many things and can be described as throbbing, aching and burning as examples.

Facts to know • According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined — in all, there are about 100 million Americans who suffer from chronic pain.

LIFE’S A JOURNEY, MAKE IT A HEALTHY ONE. • April 2018

• The total annual incremental cost of health care due to pain ranges from $560 billion to $635 billion. • An estimated 20 percent of American adults (42 million people) report that pain or physical discomfort disrupts their sleep a few nights a week or more. • Back pain is the leading cause of disability among Americans under 45 years old. More than 26 million between ages 20-64 experience frequent back pain. TIPS TO AVOID ROADBLOCKS TO MEDICATION FOR PAIN PATIENTS By Daniel W. Heller

n a day and age where opioid abuse and overdose deaths are at epidemic levels, new measures must be taken by providers to prevent these issues.

Pharmacists and doctors are creating steps to better understand patients and adequately explain how to avoid roadblocks in your access to medication. During the 2017 Nevada Legislative Session, Nevada made arrangements to receive $5.6 million from the federal government to combat opioid addiction in the state, which is part of 21st Century Cures Act passed by congress. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) publishes a handbook for prescribers and pharmacists to follow while working within the medication world. As always, pharmacists do not condone or support the abuse of opioids, and if you or someone you know is struggling with an addiction, please contact the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) at www.SAMHSA.gov. website has a treatment center locator, as well as many tips and advice for those struggling with addiction. In an effort to better serve patients who are in desperate need of pain medication, here are some of those red flags prescribers and pharmacists look for that you, as a patient, can avoid to legitimately receive the care you need.

Patient pays cash or uses a discount card for prescriptions. When a patient states he or she has no insurance, yet pays over $200 in cash for pain prescriptions each month, it may be an indicator he or she is trying to prevent a paper trail.

Patient has driven a long distance to a pharmacy or to see a doctor. If a pharmacist sees that the patient travels to a doctor and pharmacist who are far from each other, when closer options are available, it could be a red flag.

The patient receives Controlled Substances (CS) scripts from more than one prescriber. If a person is receiving one pain medication for a back injury, and then has dental work done and receives a second pain medication for that procedure, it could be unnecessary. Pain medication for the back can easily help with any tooth pain.

What Makes Us D DIFFERENT? R N ? Just Ask Our Patients...

”I have seen good result with the Deep Tissue Laser Therapy. I have been fighting dizziness for five years. I have tried other lasers, and the Deep Tissue Laser has been the only thing that worked for me.” ~Dennis “My left knee would ache when I walked and climbed stairs. Dr Jensen told me about Deep Tissue Laser Therapy, and how it could help. So I decided to give it a try. I’m not sure how it works but it worked. I haven’t had the problems in my knee since.” ~Chuck

The patient appears to be returning too frequently. For example, a prescription that should have lasted for a month in legitimate use is being requested for filling on a biweekly, weekly, or even a daily basis. Do your best to use all medication only as it is prescribed.

Patient requests a specific brand, shape, color or size of a product.

If a pharmacist sees that the patient travels to a doctor and pharmacist who are far from each other, when closer options are available, it could be a red flag.”

Although there are situations where patients may not be able to tolerate specific fillers in medications, if you ask for specific manufacturers or colors of controlled substances, it will draw scrutiny.

Prescribers write CS prescriptions outside the usual course of their specialty’s practice. As convenient as it may seem to have your neighbor, who may be a cardiologist, write prescriptions for your pain diagnosis, don’t do it. Go through the proper channels for your prescriptions; it is a safer approach to treatment for your condition.

Do you ha have an

Family members all receive the same CS prescriptions. When a pharmacist sees a situation like this, it is cause for concern because all of the medication may be going toward one person’s dependence, or it is part of a pill mill operation. Apart from the tips above, the No. 1 way to ensure you receive the legitimate pain medication you need is to have a good relationship with your doctor and pharmacist. The pelvic floor is the sling of 14 muscles located between the pubic bone and tailbone that are responsible for controlling urine, controlling feces and gas, and supporting internal organs, postural support of the spine and pelvis and sexual function. Pelvic pain can be caused by the muscles of the pelvic floor being overactive or tight; a connective tissue restriction; or nerve inflammation. These symptoms lead to pain, weakness and/or dysfunction of the processes in the pelvic region — urinary, bowel and sex. Some primary reasons for the onset of pelvic floor problems are pregnancy and childbirth; repetitive motion or stress; sitting, driving, cycling and horseback riding; falls onto the tailbone; motor vehicle accidents; surgeries; poor posture; physical or sexual trauma; and straining with

constipation or other conditions of the urinary, gastrointestinal or reproductive systems, among others. As with many persistent pain or musculoskeletal conditions, it is a combination of several factors, and the pain may occur “out of the blue” because of years of a certain activity or stress on the system(s).

Some of the common symptoms of pelvic pain: In both women and men: perineal or anal pain; pain with sitting and/ or exercise; tailbone pain; and pain with urination, urinary urgency, frequency, hesitancy and burning, and/or constipation. In men: penile, scrotal or post-ejaculatory pain; and erectile dysfunction. In women: vulvar, vaginal or clitoral pain; labial, vulvar or genital itching; painful menstruation; abdominal or groin pain; sacroiliac joint pain; and/ or pain with/after sex or sexual intercourse.

Treatment strategies: A team approach will result in an accurate diagnosis and a strategy for the combination of multisystem impairments, not based solely on the diagnosis. Each area of concern should be addressed individually and collectively for a mind-body and whole-life approach to care. This may involve providers from various specialties, such as physical therapists, gynecologists, urologists and/or oncologists, among others. For some, implementing a specific exercise program will be the solution

— for others, the evaluation and treatment may be much more involved and include several specialists. A physical therapy plan of care may include very specific exercises in addition to hands on/manual therapy combined with other modalities. It is essential to your overall health for you to receive the care you deserve to resolve your pelvic pain.

Here are some tips to get you started: 1. Communicate your concerns with your provider. There may be specific tests you will need to rule out or treat certain conditions and necessitate the referral to a specialist. 2. Seek the care of a physical therapist, preferably one who specializes in pelvic health for providing solutions with an individualized plan of care. 3. Begin with the least invasive treatment and seek guidance for natural remedies. Unfortunately, pelvic pain is often misdiagnosed as something else, which can lead to the unnecessary use of drugs or surgery. 4. Breathe! Deep breathing is an excellent place to start while you are working on putting the pieces together. 5. For a tight pelvic floor, stretching is a great place to start, and the Happy Baby Yoga Pose or deep squat are good places to begin for women and men. HEALTHY MIND

The healing power of forest bathing By Annora McGarry

W

hen you walk into the forest, do you see a city of trees? Or do you see an ecosystem teeming with life, both observable and microscopic?

What you might not recognize immediately is the healing power of the forest — as a place to foster deeper connections with your sense of self, with the world at large, and with Mother Earth to arrive at a harmonious state of physical and mental wellbeing.

The healing art of forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, has been proven to improve focus and productivity, increase happiness and boost immunity. In Japan, forest bathing is recognized as such a crucial part of mental and physical health that it was implemented as a part of the country’s public health program in 1982. It is shown that spending time inhaling the phytoncides, or essential oils emitted by trees and plant life, can help to improve immune system function as well as mood and overall wellbeing. When was the last time that you took a break from work, or consciously stepped outside to spend time among the trees, to clear your mind and let nature revive and rejuvenate your soul? Whether it is just for 15 minutes or a few hours, studies have shown that time spent in the forest — breathing the air and enjoying the peaceful setting — can greatly improve mental and physical health. Ashley Aarti Cooper, a Tahoe-based yoga instructor and shinrin-yoku guide, says, “The principles of shinrin-yoku have really helped my clients become connected to their bodies, and the internal and external environments they inhabited. They reported greater presence, reduction in feelings of anxiety, better pain management, and an overall sense of wellbeing.” She stresses the distinction between endurance or destination hiking and full immersion in the forest. Taking the time to contemplate your natural surroundings while enjoying the scenery, the smells, and the feel of the forest helps to focus the mind and rejuvenate the body.

12

The healing art of forest-bathing, or shinrin-yoku, has been proven to improve focus and productivity, increase happiness and boost immunity.”

As a physical, spiritual, and mental practice, Ashley says that, “(Shinrin-yoku) puts everything in perspective when you see yourself as a being that is meant to be a part of the natural world. Take your shoes off, take your time, lean against an old tree and close your eyes in the sunshine. Just listen. Smell the cedars, taste the woodmint, splash your face in a stream. Remember that you are just one tiny human with one fleeting life, and enjoy the freedom that comes with that knowledge.” When we examine our place in the natural world, the forest is both humbling and invigorating. Humans naturally belong in this landscape. By taking the time to unplug and immerse yourself in the calming presence of the forest, you can achieve the healing benefits of the outdoors that our ancestors have enjoyed for generations. So go ahead, and indulge yourself in a healing forest-bath. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you. Annora McGarry is a lover of all things outdoors who has made her home in Tahoe City. She works for Granlibakken Tahoe, a resort, retreat center and lodge located in Tahoe City, California. Granlibakken Tahoe hosts twice yearly wellness retreats, under its Sierra Soul brand. TRY THESE EXERCISES TO ENTER THE FLOW STATE WITH MINDFULNESS By Nicole Vandehurst

Mindfulness practice is a way to reset your intentions each day — a time to reconnect with yourself and get into the flow state of performance.”

I

magine yourself seated on a boulder just behind a waterfall. The smell of the fresh rain water tickles your nose as the coolness surrounds you. The gentle drips and splashes create a way for your mind to quiet, while your awareness is settled only on your breath. Now imagine taking this escape every day! Mindfulness practice is a way to reset your intentions each day — a time to reconnect with yourself and get into the flow state of performance. Furthermore, research published in “Frontiers in Human Neuroscience” has shown evidence that meditation had been associated with: • • • •

Decreased stress Decreased depression and anxiety Decreased pain and insomnia Increased quality of life

Next, take in deep breaths filling it from the belly. Fully exhale. As you exhale begin to relax and bring attention to your facial muscles, then your jaw and throat. Continue to other areas of the body until you feel completely relaxed. Walk in Nature: Take this time to bring your attention to the beauty of your surroundings. Let go of thinking about being a professional, a parent or the constant need for achieving excellence. Allow this time to be just for you, to truly appreciate the beauty around you. Yoga Meditation: Start in a standing position with feet next to each other, arms down by your side with palms facing out. Take three deep breaths in this position. On the third lift the arms up and flow through three sun salutations of your choice. Pick two to three poses to flow through as part of your sun salutation. This mini yoga practice will help bring you back into your body and clear your mind allowing you to move forward with a clearer and more alert mind.

Be Creative: Sing, dance, draw or just laugh! Changing your train of thought can give you clear perspectives on your surroundings and situations. Allow yourself to be truly you!

The evidence shows that mindfulness practice done each day will have positive health benefits including enhancing sports performance and overall wellbeing.

Life can be overwhelming: staying connected to ourselves through the practice of mindfulness can help bring creativity, clarity, passion and overall happiness to our journey.

Start by doing one of the following exercises for 10 minutes each day.

Nicole Vandehurst is a sports psychology consultant for Barton Hospital and a Neuromuscular Massage Therapist at Elevate Wellness Center. To schedule an appointment, please call 530-541-9355 or visit us at 2034 Lake Tahoe Blvd., in South Lake Tahoe or online at www.elevate-wellness.com.

That research, titled “Change in brainstem gray matter concentration following a mindfulness-based intervention is correlated with improvement in psychological well-being,” found that meditation and mindfulness practice not only decreases stress but can literally change the brain.

Seated Meditation: Begin by closing your eyes in a comfortable position either seated or lying down. If seated, align your spine so each vertebra stacks one on top of the other.

Today we tackle number 5, “Get Your Gut in Order.” Teddy patted his still ample, but decreasing-in-size belly. “What can I do?” Teddy asked. “I eat good.” “You eat,” I said, throwing shade Teddy’s way, “The Standard American Diet (S.A.D.). We call it CRAP (Carbohydrates, Refined, Added sugar and Processed foods). You eat too much fat, too much sugar, not enough fruit, and as Steph tells it, never any vegetables. The result is you, a Teddy. You don’t sleep enough, booze too much and fly off the handle at every little thing. Your liver is overloaded, and the rest of your GI tract is under constant assault.”

Replacing table salt or sea salt with Himalayan pink salt is a good way to increase your gut’s health. GETTY IMAGES

Since 80 percent of your immune system resides in the GI mucosal lining, Fasano writes, damage to that lining results in damage to your immune system. “And the bad guys are?” Teddy asked. “Gluten, dairy, corn, soy, eggs at times, and sugar,” I told him. “All my favorites,” Teddy said. “What do I do?” “In general,” I said, “Practice the 4 Rs.”

Action steps: The 4 R Program 1. Remove inflammatory foods:

• Such as gluten, dairy, corn, soy, eggs and sugar • Also, remove gastric irritants such as alcohol, caffeine or drugs

2. Repair: • • • •

Eat clean, whole foods, as well as fermented foods Add Omega 3 fatty acids into your diet Add healing herbs to your food Increase intake of things like L-glutamine; Zinc; Omega-3 fish oil; Vitamins A, C and E; and aloe vera, among others

3. Restore:

• Fermented foods • Probiotics

4. Replace

“I’m trying, Doc.”

• Increase intake of digestive enzymes • Use Himalayan pink salt instead of sea or table salt

More shade.

“Sounds complicated,” Teddy said.

“Well Steps 1-4 are a start,” I said pointing at his belly. ”Your gut lining, which contains tight junctions (TJs), protects you from the bad guys from the outside. The constant peppering of your gut with the toxins you throw down your gizzard every day eventually disrupts the TJs leading

“You’ll get the hang of it,” I said. “Think of the GI tract as a ‘second brain.’ Your gut health will impact your brain function, your mood, your whole way of life.” With 33 years of medical experience, Reno physician William Clearfield, D.O., of the Clearfield Medical Group provides patients with treatment plans that boost their overall quality of life. Dreaming about death

WHAT DOES IT MEAN, AND WHAT HAPPENS UPON THE SOUL’S JOURNEY TO THE BEYOND? By Andy Drymalski, EdD

S

hortly before her death, an older woman living in Europe dreamed (as reported by Marie-Louise von Franz in her book, “On Dreams & Death: A Jungian Interpretation,” on page 64):

“I have packed two suitcases, one with my working clothes, the other, a trans-Europe suitcase, with my jewelry, my diaries, and my photos. The first is for the mainland, the other for America.” Von Franz states that death is often conceived as a journey to and unknown land, generally in the West, location of the setting sun. Another elderly woman approaching death dreamed the following: “My son is taking me and other family members to Australia. He says we can’t bring extra clothes with us. I can, however, bring my jewelry. I am looking for my earrings but cannot find them. Everyone is looking for them and our trip to the airport is delayed because of this.” These dreams have to do with death and the soul’s journey to the beyond. This is conveyed through the image of travel to a distant and unfamiliar land. Clothes and related accessories are symbols of the persona, the role we play in life. Jewelry, however, especially quality jewelry, represents something more enduring and valuable than clothes. Jewelry is often inherited, received as a special gift, or as an expression of love and commitment, as with an engagement ring.

Clothes are outgrown; they deteriorate and are discarded. Likewise, the identity and sense of self that suited you at one stage of life feels constricting and awkward at another. You outgrow and are asked to let go of old roles. Quality values and quality life experiences, on the other hand, such as those memorialized in a diary, a photo, or a special piece of jewelry, are not outgrown. In fact, we usually try to pass them on to the next generation. They have a meaning that connects us to our soul and the soul of others. The dreams indicate that it is the quality things in us that make the trip to the other side. The things that have helped us to become more conscious, that have enriched, deepened, and contributed to the integrity of our personality — these are what we take to the afterlife. The dreams also warn, however, of the danger of losing or misplacing what is important in life. It is possible to live life poorly, valuing or chasing after things that derail rather than deepen your journey of self-growth and self-knowledge. Dreams about the afterlife can have plenty of interpretations. GETTY IMAGES

There is a danger of forgetting what is truly important in life such as love, honesty with yourself and others, and learning the specific lessons you were put here to learn. It is possible to enter the afterlife spiritually and psychologically impoverished because you never really lived the life you were meant to live. Planning for pain

WITH THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD, YOU HAVE WHAT YOU NEED TO REDUCE PAIN NATURALLY By Carole Bucher

Enter the Feldenkrais Method, where we learn to recognize and feel movement patterns, relieve pain and stress, and create permanent change in our structure. Here, we accept the responsibility for participating in our own outcome; we can regain optimism and create a new future for ourselves. The Feldenkrais Method is a body and brain-retraining system that teaches us to reorganize our movements from the inside out. By working with attention and sensation, we use our muscles and skeleton naturally to reduce pain and stress, and to increase efficient, stable movement.

I

n our 21st century world, tethered to electronic devices, we stressed-out humans are deeply reliant on the autopilot feature of our brains. From this, unconscious actions and movements, unplanned thoughts and often-inexplicable deeds arise.

Periodically and persistently, physical pain penetrates this murky realm to remind us that autopilot isn’t such a great mode for our bodies. Years of poor posture and repetitive, mindless movement take their toll, illustrated by an absence of connection to our bodies and a lack of understanding about where our pain comes from. Something needs to change. No amount of prescription pharmaceuticals, steroid shots or surgical “fixes” or time on a therapeutic table will cure movement-related pain — or prevent it from returning. Why? Because the problem stems from how we use our whole body and from our habits, not just from the part that feels the pain. Physical therapy, chiropractic or surgical procedures will never change this. You are the only one who can.

16

We practice this powerful intervention by doing slow, meticulously designed, non-habitual movement sequences in group classes or private sessions. We sense which movements are easy and which are difficult; we work at our own level. In this way, we begin to create real change in the way we move, discovering new movement strategies to help us feel better, stronger and more comfortable. Now back to autopilot. Humans have a highly developed, capable autopilot function that serves many useful purposes. Yes, we can find our keys each day when we put them in the same place, but we pay heavily for the convenience. This is especially true of repetitive movement habits — which kill change and variability, those critical neural stimulators of our brains.

Without noticing, we can become profoundly disconnected from our bodies. We are not aware of where we are in space. Suddenly we have a running accident, or hurt ourselves in a yoga class, or fall off a ladder. We encounter pain and injury because our brains are not connected to our bodies. Practicing Feldenkrais directly counteracts our autopilot function. By learning to pay attention to our bodies and heed the signals it sends, we do two crucial things: • First, our increased awareness helps us to notice and feel movements that

ARE ELECTRONIC DEVICES CAUSING YOU TO HAVE THE SYMPTOMS OF WHIPLASH? By Dr. Tony C. Jensen

I

t is amazing to look at people today. Most of them are on their cellphones, computers, gaming system or some other electronic system.

In fact, according to statistics from the first quarter of 2016 from global measurement and data analytics company Nielsen, the average adult American spends about 9.6 hours a day using these various devices. And those numbers are growing, according to published reports.

Most of us don’t think about what is happening to our bodies as we sit slumped over these devices. We use them day after day, and the damage that they’re causing to us can be equal to “whiplash” in some cases. You ask, “How can this be?” When we are fresh in the morning, most of us do pretty well, but as day goes on, we start the poor posture.

“When we slump while seated, which causes our shoulders to roll forward and the mid-back to round out, the head and neck are pushed forward,” wrote Michelle C. Bean, a Sparks-based chiropractor, in a 2010 Healthy Beginnings story about whiplash. “In an attempt to maintain balance we automatically extend the head back even further causing that abnormal S-shaped curve of the neck as seen in sudden whiplash. Only now, we maintain this posture hours on end and day after day.” Bean continued: “Over time this will result in muscle lengthening adaptations and altered normal biomechanics. The body continues to compensate by restricting motion of injured muscles and joints. All these changes cause secondary myofascial pain that leads to referred pain typically in the neck, shoulders, and between the shoulder blades.” All of this can lead to headaches, loss of neck ROM (range of motion), arm tingling or numbness, and irritability, among other symptoms. Most people will think that these symptoms are caused by their own individual stress and tension, which could be true to some degree. However, these symptoms are really byproducts of all the hours, days, months and years of poor posture,

According to the Mayo Clinic, whiplash is defined as “a neck injury due to forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip. Whiplash most often occurs during a rear-end auto accident, but the injury can also result from a sports accident, physical abuse or other trauma.”

Dr. Tony C. Jensen is a Reno-baased chiropractor who is board certified d in the state of Nevada. Visit www.aetchiroopractic.com to learn more.

Most symptoms from whiplash are: neck, upper back and shoulder pain and stiffness; loss of neck ROM with or without pain; headaches; tingling or numbness in the arms; fatigue; dizziness; blurred vision; ringing in the ears; concentration problems; memory problems; irritability; depression; and sleeping problems, to name a few. The scary thing about these two scenarios is that the person who gets whiplash from an injury feels it within minutes to days and usually seeks out treatment because they realize there is a problem. With the other scenario, the person usually doesn’t figure it out because it’s a slow, prolonged growing problem, so they live with their symptoms that continue to slowly get worse and continue to create more damage with time, and as such, they’re wondering why their health is slowly going downhill. Both of these scenarios can cause symptoms and ongoing degenerative problems — which you don’t want. So if you are experiencing any of them now or have noticed any starting, you need to seek

Up that immune system

TRY THESE NATURAL REMEDIES AS A WAY TO BATTLE PAIN AND OTHER AILMENTS By Elaine Brooks

T

he air we breathe, the food we eat, our homes, our workplaces, even the things we touch — they’re all attacking our immune system constantly.

It is hard to get through the day without ingesting, touching or breathing some bacteria that will bring us down. But there are some great ways of avoiding the dreaded “bug.”

The Lomatium dissectum plant can stand at more than 2 feet tall at maturity. WIKIPEDIA COMMONS

20

First and foremost, WASH YOUR HANDS. Yes, your mother was right, cleanliness is essential to staying healthy. Also, eat your vegetables and fruits, and avoid sugar and white foods that turn to sugar. Bugs love a sugar or acidic environment. The more alkaline your body, the more resistant to disease you are. Then there are a lot of products that will help keep you happy and healthy. I really like Probiotics. They populate “the gut” with

friendly bacteria, which protects you from the bad bacteria that will allow your immune system to get run down. Another great product that is highly recommended for building the immune is good ole Vitamin D. The “Sunshine Vitamin” not only protects the bone, breast and colon health, but after protecting them, it goes on to the immune system and assists it with protecting you. And, it also makes you happy, just like a nice sunny day always improves peoples’ attitudes. A natural option with local ‘roots’ I have been studying this latest flu outbreak across Northern Nevada, and I found a correlation to the great flu pandemic of 1918. Millions died throughout the world, and it nearly shut down World War I — in fact more died of the flu than died in that war, according to published reports. Interestingly, Ernst T. Krebs, a renowned biochemist from Carson City, noticed the Washoe Tribe was not getting sick. He reportedly found out tribal members were eating a root — called “Lomatium dissectum,” known by the common name fernleaf biscuitroot — that grows in the rocky hillsides of the Sierra Nevada and sagebrush areas of the interior Northwest. According to an article he wrote for the Nevada State Board of Health on the subject in 1920, Krebs wrote the following about Lomatium dissectum: “There is probably no therapeutic agent so valuable in the treatment of influenza pneumonia and … it is a powerful tonic to the respiratory mucous membranes. It is a bronchial, intestinal and urinary antiseptic and it seems to stimulate the lungs and stomach.”

THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD® OF MOVEMENT IMPROVEMENT

Further, in an excerpt from the 1993 book “A Holistic Protocol for the Immune System,” Dr. Scott J. Gregory, wrote that, “Lomatium dissectum, a plant antibiotic … is believed that this antibiotic extract is one of the most important infection fighters in existence.’ According to published reports and medical journals, Lomatium dissectum can treat a plethora of ailments and infections, including, but not limited to: influenza; respiratory and urinary infections; Epstein-barr virus; Lyme disease; athlete’s foot; and most yeast infections. More about the plant Lomatium dissectum, pronounced “lomay-shum di-sect-um,” is in the same family (Apiaceae) as carrot, parsley and celery. It has umbel flower heads with flowers that are usually yellow and are 2-3 feet tall. It is a perennial that develops the root slowly over several years. The root is the part of the plant that is used for medicinal purposes.

The Washoe Indians called the plant “dosa” or “doza,” and as aforementioned, its common name is fernleaf biscuitroot. You do need to know what you are looking for, as some plants that look the same are quite poisonous. Once you find the correct plant, start treatment slowly, as it can cause a slight rash on some people. I love to support the locals and found a company near Reno that has Lomatium dissectum, and the family is involved in the gathering and processing. So I have it at The Herb Lady. It worked for me a few years ago when all else failed, and now it is working for people here, keeping them well, and happy to not be sick. Hope to see or hear from you soon. Healthy Soil = Healthy Plants = Healthy People By Craig Witt

Y

ou wake up in the morning feeling groggy with a sore throat and scratchy eyes. Oh no, you’re coming down with something!

You run to the kitchen grab a big glass of OJ, an assortment of vitamins and even a probiotic. Why do we do all of these things? Because we know vitamins, beneficial bacteria and good nutrition all help humans fight off sickness and be healthy. Well the same goes for your soil. Healthy soil provides a “buffet” of the food, vitamins and biology that plants need to also be healthy. The more good nutrients in the soil, the more there are in plants — and with that, the more we humans get as we eat those plants. Not all soils are healthy and they need that same vitamin and probiotic boost to get them feeling good. How do you create healthy soils?

22

HEALTHY BEGINNINGS • April 2018

You start with rock powder minerals. In his nowfamed book, “Bread From Stones,” Dr. Julius Hensel details a simple experiment in which he ground stone mineral powder and dressed the soil of his garden, which resulted in “new, more vigorous growth” in his vegetables.

Direct application of important minerals to unhealthy soil will not automatically bring the soil “back to life.” You must add the “life” along with the nutrition. “Soil life” comes through biology and amazing beneficial microorganisms that break down the minerals and help them become available to the plants.

Even in the poorest of soils, Hensel was growing healthy, insect- and disease-resistant plants. Nutrient-rich, natural plant growth is possible when there is a balance of minerals available for the plants to consume.

The best biology out there is a natural humus. We’re not talking about the hummus bean paste you eat with crackers, but rather the resulting organic material of a complete composting process (properly made compost).

Increasing the health of your garden’s soil can have direct positive impacts on your health. GETTY IMAGES

These rock powder minerals need to have a balance of micro and macronutrients, including: calcium, nitrogen, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, copper, iron, zinc, boron, sulfur and others. These minerals should be very fine in “grind” so they can be absorbed into the soil.

Humus is not a mineral; it’s the organic medium that holds all of the minerals in the soil, so your plants can access them. Beyond humus, you can increase the life in the soil by adding other microbe rich materials like worm castings and mycorrhizal fungi. Worm castings are the definition of pure biology being the end result of the oldest composting process in the world, the stomach of a worm. “Mycorrhizae” are beneficial fungi that set up a network of connections in the soil to efficiently and effectively deliver newly added soil nutrients to the plant root. Both of these biological sources can be added to humus with a buffet of minerals.

Dan Kittredge, founder and executive director of the Bio-nutrient Food Association, also has similar views. He indicates: “Science is discovering the vast similarities between the gut and root microbial communities. Their capacity for symbiosis and harmony or depletion and disease is all based how we approach them. When the soil is full of life-supporting probiotics, the food grown there is your ally in gut health, nutrient absorption, and immune resilience.” So, let’s increase the health of the soil, because “Healthy Soil = Healthy Plants = Healthy People”!
