Plant a tree – You can apply for free seedlings at www.nwf. org/Trees-for-Wildlife/About/Tree-Bank-Information.aspx or join the Arbor Day Foundation and receive 10 free trees to plant: www.arborday.org/join/

2 Start recycling – Every little bit helps! 3 Buy locally-sourced food – Locally-

grown food is usually kinder to the environment.

4

Carpool – Save money and maybe even find like-minded friends.

5

Create a garden – even if it’s a small windowbox herb garden, you and your family will enjoy watching the progress of something you have created, and you reap the rewards of delicious home-grown flavors.

6

Stop buying bottled water – use a refillable permanent water bottle. You’ll save money and our landfills.

7

Clean up your community – grab some friends and make a difference. Last fall, a few work friends and I went out one Saturday morning and, in just a few hours, collected over 550 pounds of garbage from a stretch of the Carson River.

8

Go paperless – Change your billing to paperless, whenever possible. You’ll save pounds of paper every year and maybe even avoid a few paper cuts.

9

Set a family challenge – Who can recycle the most? Produce the least garbage in one week? Can you reduce your electric bill by having kids run around the house and turn off unused lights and televisions regularly? Set achievable goals with rewards at the end to raise your whole family’s awareness.

A

pril 22, 1970 marked the first official “Earth Day.” It was a time of leaded gas, environmental unawareness and air pollution. But a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, inspired by a student anti-war movement and the tragic results of a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, partnered with Congressman Pete McCloskey and Denis Hayes from Harvard to create a day of awareness. By the end of 1970, the first Earth Day had led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. Forty years later, in 2010, Earth Day saw a Climate Rally of 250,000 people at the National Mall, the launching of A Billion Acts of Green®, the world’s largest environmental service project, and 22,000 partners in 192

countries observing the Earth Day movement. Soon to reach its 50th Anniversary, in 2020, the Earth Day Network continues to grow and impact the world we (and our future generations will) live in. Please see our Calendar on page 30 for local Earth Day celebrations. If you can’t participate in any locallyorganized events, don’t worry! You can participate on your own, that day and every day thereafter. Here are 10 ideas to help you get started. Please visit www.earthday.org for more information.

n our March issue I wrote about the beautiful emergence of spring time and the positive influence the transformations taking place in nature can have on our well being. As we head into April and spring begins to fully unfold we can use this momentum to take inventory of our personal health and set our intentions on how we can use the transformation taking place in nature to spur us on. Start simple, by assessing if you are drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, exercising daily, eating enough fruits and vegetables, reducing stress by taking a few moments each day to clear

your mind. Doing just a little bit better in each of these areas every day will add up to healthy results and get your body and mind on track for your personal springtime transformation! In this month’s issue the experts have addressed very timely topics; managing sleep and anger issues, living with chronic pain, breakthroughs in fighting cancer, thyroid care and dispelling myths about medical marijuana and weight loss. Also, don’t miss our recipe for juicing; consider adding a daily juice meal to your spring transformation. Check out our Healthy Beginnings Facebook page for lots of helpful tips and information on healthy living.

How the Food Giants Hooked Us Written By Michael Moss Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHT, PLR

T

he processed food industry deliberately puts as much salt, sugar and fat into their products as possible. They know they’re addictive, harmful to your health in a thousand ways and they don’t care. Their only concern is the amount of profit they generate. The author explains that one executive of a wellknown Big Food company commented to his Board that as a corporation their only job is to create profit – it’s the FDA’s job to make sure the food is healthy. But in 2010 alone, big food and pharmaceutical corporations gave the FDA over $200 million in fees. That amount of money buys a lot of approval. Salt, sugar and fat have become America’s three basic food groups because we eat so much processed food. Those three are the most abundant additives in processed food and their effects are cumulative – the more we eat them, the more we want … a simple description of addiction. In fact food processors call us “users,” like the drug addicts we are supposed to become. The result is pandemic obesity and plenty of unintended consequences: miserable chronic, degenerative diseases in an age when we should be overcoming disease altogether. These Big Food corporations (Kellogg, Campbell, Kraft, Pillsbury, Nestle, Nabisco, General Mill s, Proctor & Gamble, Mars, PepsiCo and other massive conglomerates) employ armies of food engineers, psychologists, researchers, marketers,

strategists and other scientists in order to determine the “bliss point” regarding salt, sugar and fat consumption. Salt is processed in dozens of ways to maximize the jolt that taste buds will feel with the very first bite. Fats deliver the biggest load of calories and work in subtle ways to encourage people to overeat. Sugar, whose raw power to excite the brain is probably the most formidable ingredient of all, is added to processed food that is available from one end of the store to the

INSOMNIA: Is Worry The Problem? Written By: Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. & Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B

an’t sleep? Does your frustration build as you wake up several times a night? Or do you have trouble falling asleep only to wake up an hour before your alarm goes off and then have to push through your day drinking caffeine because you can’t stay awake? If you answered yes to any one of these questions, and you have excessive daytime sleepiness, then you likely have insomnia. You are not alone in this struggle, as insomnia and other disorders of sleep are some of the most common to affect our society and the quality of life of Americans. Insomnia is estimated to disturb upwards of 50% of the adult population on occasion and 30% on a consistent basis. Other sleep disorders such as restless leg syndrome, a miserable condition where an individual has a deep sensation of needing to move their legs as they rest in the evening while sitting or lying down, also plague upwards of 10% of adults. Due to the misery caused by these problems, people go to their doctors in hope of effective solutions, or, in an attempt to pursue a more “natural route,” frequent vitamin stores seeking answers and end up taking valerian root, melatonin, and sleep

From a clinician’s perspective, a diagnosis of insomnia cannot be immediately assumed when evaluating patients who cannot sleep, stay asleep, wake up too early, and are fatigued all day. A detailed history of sleep habits, patterns, and behaviors combined with a detailed neurological examination are paramount to uncover the cause of the problem. Other non-insomnia-related conditions also disturb rest and must be ruled out as being different from true insomnia, with sleep apnea being one of the most critical conditions to assess, as it can place undue stress on the heart leading to shortening of one’s lifespan. The common solution for sleep apnea is different from insomnia and is to wear a mask that maintains airway pressure, so that stress is taken off of the heart. It is important for you to understand what your doctor has to rule out when you complain of lack of sleep, as different causes require different solutions. So assuming that you do not have sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome, what is causing you to not be able to get adequate rest? It is well documented in professional textbooks and peer reviewed journal articles that patients who cannot sleep frequently relay to their doctors that life is stressful. Because of this, scientists have investigated

the associations between the disorder of insomnia and the disorders of anxiety and depression. Surprisingly, these associations have not been found to be meaningful in evaluating and treating insomnia. The one common denominator that was seen with insomniacs is what is termed “excessive night time worry.” The questions for the astute historian then become “are you a worrier, what are you worrying about, and why can’t you stop worrying?” The fear center in the brain is a structure called the amygdale. This fear center structure helps us to identify danger, and thus to create an advantageous response. The classic example of this response with which most of us are familiar being to either fight or run from a dangerous situation such as encountering a mountain lion while hiking in the Sierra. This reaction is known as the fight-or-flight response. Most of us are not stumbling across a mountain lion on a daily basis, but the fear center for insomniacs is, for all intents and purposes, like an engine running at 9000 RPMs. Scientific studies have shown the amygdala to be critically involved with insomnia. Interestingly, it is involved in a different fashion in patients who have depression and yet even slightly differently in those who have anxiety disorders. In reviewing sleep statistics, upwards of 30% of the American population will suffer with anxiety disorders, 16% will have depression, and 30-50% will continued on page 10

Managing

Chronic Pain Treating Pain & Suffering

Written by Ruth Gentry, Ph.D., Clinical Healthy Psychologist

C

hronic pain is a significant, costly problem in the United States with annual economic costs ranging from $560635 billion (1). Approximately 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, a total greater than those affected by diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined (2). Pain serves an important function, alerting us to injuries, but as a result pain is often viewed solely as a physical sensation to be treated using traditional medical interventions such as opioid medications and surgery. However, pain that becomes chronic (i.e., lasts for months or years) includes not only physical components, but environmental and psychological aspects as well. Chronic pain can be extremely stressful and we know stress can contribute to various health problems such as diabetes, depression, anxiety and heart disease to name a few. Stress can also impact the degree of muscle tension in the body increasing pain levels. Thus, to treat pain effectively you have to also treat the thoughts, emotions and behaviors that come with the physical discomfort as well. Most traditional medical treatments aim at reducing the pain sensations through the use of painkillers, muscle relaxants and anti-depressant medications. Increasing research has shown these treatments can be effective in acute or short-term pain, but become less effective with chronic conditions. Furthermore, long-term use of medications has been associated with increased problems such as dependency or addiction, increased mortality rates and disability (2). The most common component of traditional pain management treatment is the emphasis on efforts to reduce or fight to end the pain altogether. In some cases this may be possible, but for many they are faced with the reality that they may have to live with pain, to some degree, for the rest of their lives. Often people with chronic pain alter their life in many ways to avoid the experience in hopes of becoming pain-free rather than living their life the way they like to be living. As a result, they tend to stop doing pleasurable activities, lose intimate relationships, become more isolated and may feel depressed and anxious. Often getting rid of the pain is not the answer, but instead expanding enough to live the life you desire with pain. The more we attempt to avoid pain and the related thoughts, emotions and activities, the more constrained our lives become. PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF

Written by Dr. Tony Jensen

C

arpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an injury caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist. The injury causes pain and numbness in the index and middle fingers and weakness of the thumb. Carpal tunnel receives its name from the eight bones in the wrist, called carpals, which form a "tunnel" through which the nerve leading to the hand extends. Fortunately, not all wrist pain should be called CTS. It is important to determine if, in fact, the symptoms are being caused by the pressure on the nerves of the wrist or if there is a different cause of the problem. It is VERY common for these types of symptoms to exist when there is a neck misalignment, history of auto injury or other spinal condition. The nerves of the neck control all the nerves of our arms and hands. If the nerves of the neck are being compressed, wrist and hand pain is a common symptom. Your Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to determine whether your condition is a true carpal tunnel syndrome.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Signs and symptoms of CTS include Nighttime painful tingling in one or both hands, frequently causing sleep disturbance Feeling of uselessness in the fingers A sense that fingers are swollen even though little or no swelling is apparent Daytime tingling in the hands, followed by a decreased ability to squeeze things Loss of strength in the muscle at the base of the thumb, near the palm Pain shooting from the hand up the arm as far as the shoulder

WHO'S MOST AT RISK? People working with small hand tools in manufacturing and those using a computer keyboard on a regular basis are especially at risk.

Women are 2-5 times more likely than men to develop CTS. It most commonly occurs in people ages 30-60. CTS is associated with health conditions such as Lyme disease, hypothyroidism, rubella, pregnancy, obesity, and menopause. High caffeine, tobacco or alcohol intake are contributing risk factors.

TREATMENT OPTIONS There are multiple ways to treat CTS. Some of these are: Drug therapies, Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Massage, Herbs/nutrition and Surgery.

CHIROPRACTIC CTS is commonly treated by chiropractors, with great results. The methods most chiropractors use to treat CTS include manipulation of the neck and upper spine area (these nerves are the ones that control the arm and hands), wrist and elbow; ultrasound therapy; wrist supports; wrist and upper body stretches and exercises to help rebalance the forearm and neck muscles. This imbalance contributes to the carpal tunnel symptoms. By taking the pressure off the nervous system and balancing the muscles, eating a balanced diet and adding anti-inflammatory foods and supplements to your life, you will help in the healing process and experience significant improvement in nerve function, finger sensation and comfort. This will restore you back to your good old self, able to do the things you love without the hand pain and numbness. If you're under chiropractic care now or if you want to help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms in the future, have your neck and arms checked for pinched nerves and talk to your doctor about proper ergonomics, stretches and exercises. This will help keep you from going through this painful process. For more info, contact Dr. Tony Jensen at 775-323-1222

AUTOMOTIVE INJURIES CAN Here are a few exercises that might help you avoid Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, according to WebMD.com and Healthline. com:

LINGER FOR YEARS

PRAYER STRETCH

Start with your palms together in front of your chest, just below your chin. Slowly lower your hands toward your waistline, keeping your hands close to your stomach and your palms together, until you feel a mild to moderate stretch under your forearms. Hold for at least 15-20 seconds, repeating 2-4 times. For an extra bonus of a back stretch, after holding the prayer stretch for 15-20 seconds, with your palms remaining together, point your fingers out and down. Then, bending slowly at the waist, bring your hands toward the floor and let them come apart naturally. Then, let your arms just hang, feeling all the heaviness drain out of your fingertips. Bring your body back up to standing, one vertebrate at a time. When your hands reach your knees, bring the palms back together, turning them so that your fingers are pointing back upward when you reach your waistline. Keep your palms together and bring your hands above your head, releasing your palm connection and reaching tall with your fingers. After a few seconds, bring your arms out wide slowly, ending with your arms hanging naturally at your side. Add a shoulder roll, for good measure.

WRIST EXTENSOR/ FLEXOR STRETCH

WE CAN HELP

DON’T SUFFER THROUGH ANOTHER DAY

WITH UNTREATED PAIN

No Twisting and Popping! Using the Pulstar Adjuster and muscle testing with Applied Kinesiology. We also perform Manual Manipulation.

Extend your arm in front of you with your palm down. Bend your wrist, pointing your hand toward the floor. With your other hand, gently bend your wrist further, until you feel a mild to moderate stretch in your forearm. To stretch your flexor, do this same exercise, but begin with your palm facing up. Hold for at least 15-30 seconds, repeating 2-4 times.

I remember doing this as a kid! Who knew I was doing something good for me? Start with your hands together in a prayer position. Spread fingers as far apart as you can, then “steeple” the fingers by separating the palms of your hands, keeping your fingers together.

Using the Body’s T-Cells to

fight cancer Written by Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

Dendritic Cell

T

here has been lots of information in the news lately about “new” ways of using T-cells in the fight against cancer.

T-cells or T lymphocytes are cells that are made in the thymus gland right behind the sternum or breastbone. They are major players in the body’s defense against many viral diseases as well as cancer. These are the cells that can turn into “NK” or natural killer cells. They are also some of the first cells to die during full dose chemotherapy. T-cells can work with another type of very specific cells in the immune system called “dendritic cells” (some of you may have heard of “dendritic cell vaccine.”) Dendritic cells were first described by Paul Langerhans in the nineteenth century. The term “dendritic cells” was first coined by Ralph Steinman and Zanvil Cohn. Steinman received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2011. There are three types of dendritic cells that have been discovered in human blood. Once activated, they seek out T-cells to initiate and shape what is called the adaptive immune response.

Exosomes are packets or vesicles located in the cell membranes of dendritic cells. They contain specific proteins, one of which is called hsc73. This protein is called a “cytosolic heat shock protein” and it has been shown to induce a very potent antitumor immune response. So, in practical terms, there is a way to stimulate a person’s own immune system to be able to start killing cancer cells in their system. The first thing that must be present in a person who is trying to accomplish this is they must have a good strong immune system with enough T-lymphocytes and dendritic cells. This can be accomplished by the use of some specific herbal and mushroom supplements. Then a blood sample is drawn and the tubes are spun in a centrifuge at a specific speed for a specific time. This separates the blood cells into layers so the T-cells and dendritic cells can be concentrated and removed. Then the cells are incubated at a specific temperature overnight to stimulate them to start producing the “heat shock proteins.” The next day, these cells are injected back into the patient’s muscle where they get into the blood and start to do their work against cancer. This therapy may be new to these Universities but we have been doing it here in Reno for the past 5 years. Patient Mysteries: Are You Thyroid Deficient? PART VIIII

IODINE AND THE THYROID | PART II Written by Dr. William N. Clearfield, D.O.

L

ast month, we learned that iodine is an essential element for the production of thyroid hormone to meet metabolic needs. (1) Most of the iodine in the world resides in the ocean hence seafood, and especially seaweed, is a good source of iodine. It is added to salt as a rule. Though necessary for the adequate production of thyroid hormone, and used successfully to treat various thyroid conditions, iodine was demonized as a poison by two U.C. Berkeley scientists, Jan Wolff and Israel Lyon Chaikoff in 1948. They ushered in the era of iodophobia, an irrational fear of iodine. Wolff and Chaikoff injected rats with radioactive iodine, which indeed killed thyroid tissue. They failed, however, to distinguish between radioactive iodine, and everyday garden-variety iodine from foodstuffs. This “Wolff-Chaikoff Effect,” coupled with the drive to put fluoride in the drinking water of large American cities, ushered in an era of thyroid disorders never before seen in concentrated urban areas. 1n 1964, the tide of iodophobia and the fluoride crusade reached its crescendo when popular U.S. Air Force General Jack D. Ripper. Ripper, convinced that fluoridation of our water supply was a Communist plot, took to the airwaves to warn the American population. “You realize,” he said, “it’s not enough to fluoridate our drinking water. You’re gonna have fluoridated salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, and even ice cream. Ice cream, children’s ice cream! … You know when fluoridation began? … 1946. 1946. Coincides with the post war Commie conspiracy. It’s incredibly obvious, isn’t it? A foreign substance introduced into our precious bodily fluids without our knowledge, and certainly without our choice. That’s the way of your hardcore Commie.” (2) “They use it in Russia as a tranquilizer. Keeps the excitable ones down. Khrushchev knows if he can talk Johnson and Rusk (President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of State, Dean Rusk) , into messing with water supply, you got yourself a nation of zombies. We become lethargic wastrels, docile. The Godless Reds take over without a shot. (3) Iodine, fluorine, chlorine and bromine, all halogens, are chemically similar to one another. Our body can easily mistake one halogen for another. As we’ve seen with gluten, certain infections, and heavy metals, previously described in Healthy Beginnings from November 2015 through March

16

2016, molecular mimicry sets off the autoimmune cascade. When our system belatedly realizes it hasn’t produced enough real substrate, working thyroid molecules, it sends out the cavalry, our immune system, to clean up the mess. In addition to fluoride, chlorine - another halogen - is found in plastics, pesticides, paper products, unfiltered drinking water, bath water and Splenda (sucralose). Bromide is found in flour products, citrus flavored soft drinks, chemical additives used in municipal water purification, pesticides, dyes, leaded fuel additive, and OTC antitussives (cough medicines). (4) Diagnosis of iodine deficiency is most accurate with a spot urine test, preferably a first morning void (FMV), or a 24-hour urine post iodine/ iodide challenge. Iodine and other competing halogens are reported as μg/gm creatinine and μg/24 hours. Iodine status is assessed by evaluation of the percentage of the ingested dose that is excreted. Low iodine excretion suggests greater bodily retention and need. Remedies for low iodine include plenty of sea vegetables and saltwater fish. Supplements include using a low, 225 micrograms. (I liken it to a homeopathic remedy or vaccine that stimulates your body’s own iodine production). Higher doses, 12.5 milligrams, can lead to hyperthyroidism and, if unchecked, “burnout,” resulting in hypothyroidism. A water filter, using fluoride-free toothpaste, avoiding food dyes and gluten-containing breads, organic produce, and using glass containers can minimize the damage. Adequate iodine intake, 100,400 times the official U.S. recommended daily allowance, protects against goitrogens, radioactive iodine/iodide fallout, and improves immune functions, resulting in an adequate defense against infection. (5) Iodine decreases genetic damage resulting in an anticarcinogenic effect in every cell in the body. It increases the urinary excretion of certain toxic metals including lead, mercury, cadmium and aluminum. Adequate iodine levels render better control of blood sugar in diabetics. Iodine sufficiency stabilizes cardiac rhythm, normalizes blood pressure (6) and vastly improves cognitive function. (7) Though having been thoroughly debunked, iodophobia remains alive and well, especially in the medical community. Treatment of iodophobia is

It Could Be Cortisol Deficiency. Take the Quiz I wake up tired in the morning through education of health care professionals and the public at large. Author’s Note: The peculiar nature of General Jack D. Ripper, Commander of Burpelson Air Force Base, home of the Strategic Air Command ’s 843rd Bomb Wing, is due to the fact that he was the fictional, paranoid Air Force General portrayed by Sterling Hayden in the 1964 movie Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Fiction or not, Dr. Strangelove began the unraveling of the WolffChaikoff Effect. Properly maintained iodine in the food supply is essential, not a liability, to a population’s well being. Every day, our office sees the consequences of this monumental public health disaster. Thyroid dysfunction in general, and autoimmune thyroid disease in particular, occur at rates never before seen in the history of humankind. Though a work of fiction, General Jack’s fear of fluoride and its effect on our “precious bodily fluids” was well founded. (8) (Eh, maybe the Communist angle was overblown.)

YOUR

ATTRACTS YOUR TRIBE

Written by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

H

ave you ever wondered, “Who are these people and how did I attract them? What’s going on here?” At one time or another we’ve all found ourselves wondering how or why we got into a certain situation. It may have started out great, but after a while it began to deteriorate. To determine what’s going on, it’s always useful to look at your past jobs, friendships or relationships to see if you can recognize a pattern. Do you continue to attract the same personality type? Unless you stop and begin to examine recurring patterns, you may continue to attract that same person over and over. I’ve heard gals say, “I keep attracting the same guy in different pants.” Or we may continue to attract the same type of boss, friends, the same conditions or situations. That’s because we don’t understand what vibes we’re broadcasting, what mental and emotional frequencies we’re sending out. Most of us understand that every thought has an invisible vibrational frequency. That thought goes out into this energy soup we live in and attracts back to us the people, conditions and situations that match the thought. It’s

18

just physics, and scientists like Einstein and his colleagues understood this in the twenties. They found that the experimenter’s thoughts and expectation affected the experiment – every time – one way or another - depending on what the scientists were thinking/expecting as they carried out the experiment. The most famous experiment was supposed to determine whether light was a wave or a particle. If the scientist setting up the experiment expected it to be a wave, it was a wave. If he expected it to be a particle it showed up as a particle. This blew them away. Unfortunately this knowledge of the power of our minds didn’t filter down to the common man for a hundred years. In fact, in the thirties a university psychologist in England accused academics and scientists all over Europe of deliberately suppressing this information. Fast forward to 2006 when the movie The Secret was produced. That movie was based on work done by Esther and Jerry Hicks starting in 1985 which said exactly the same thing: every thought has a specific vibrational frequency, like a radio signal. That signal goes out into

the vibrant energy environment we live in and attracts back to us the people, conditions and situations that match the thought. But there’s more: that thought then gives us the emotions to match, and our emotions drive our words and actions. And of course our words and actions go to make up our lives. Wow! Who knew that thoughts had that much power – or any power at all? So when we’re thinking about things we don’t want … talking about them, complaining about them, commiserating about them, we’re just attracting more of the same. Often we think we’re talking about what we DO want while we’re actually talking about what we DON’T want. So we get more of what we don’t want. In her book, Ask and It Is Given Esther Hicks says, “You are Consciousness. You are Energy. You are Vibration. You are Electricity. You are Source Energy. You are Creator. You are on the Leading Edge of thought, and even though it may seem odd to you at first, it will be helpful for you to begin to accept yourself as a Vibrational Being, for this is a Vibrational

MEDICAL MARIJUANA FOR WEIGHT LOSS? Chocolate ding-dongs and Doritos, french fries dipped in frosty milkshakes, pizza topped with pineapple…. MUNCHIES! In terms of diet and cannabis consumption, that is what most people think of, but this stereotype is another “marijuana myth” that is taking a backseat to medical science. Although cannabis has long been a recommended therapy for

those with chronic nausea, cachexia, or wasting due to severe and chronic illness, studies are finding that cannabinoids may play an important role in controlling metabolism, regulating insulin, and addressing the sensation of hunger.

It is also interesting to note that Marijuana users tend to consume more calories than non-users, yet retain a lower Body Mass Index (BMI). More than one large-scale study has concluded that marijuana users tend to be leaner than non-users, even after accounting for behavioral characteristics. Could cannabis really be the natural weight loss tool of the future? The science is optimistic, but we are just beginning to understand the benefits of medical cannabis and how it interacts with our endocannabinoid system, a unique communications pathway in the brain and body that affects many important functions,

EPIDEMIOLOGISTS at the Harvard School of Public Health, the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centers conducted a study of 4,657 adult men and women over a period of 5 years, from 2005-2010, and concluded that marijuana users have lower fasting insulin levels, significantly healthier waist sizes, and lower BMI scores than non-users.

Of the study participants, who were physically examined and provided a fasting blood sample, 579 were regular users, 1,975 past users, and 2,103 had never used marijuana. Statistically important findings, as published in The American Journal of Medicine, reported that those who used marijuana within the past month had: ■ 16% lower fasting insulin levels ■ 17% lower levels of insulin resistance ■ Higher levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) - “The Good Cholesterol” ■ Significantly smaller waist circumferences.

including metabolism. Natural chemicals produced by the body, called endocannabinoids interact with cannabinoid receptors to regulate these important body functions. Marijuana contains many unique cannabinoids that are also able to communicate with or stimulate these CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Scientists have long known the CB1 cannabinoid receptor plays a role in hunger signaling and satiety. Activation of these receptors by endogenous (produced by the body) cannabinoids, such as anadamide, increases appetite. Suppressing or blocking them decreases it. In fact, a selective CB1 endocannabinoid receptor antagonist drug indicated for the treatment of obesity was developed and marketed for patient use in Europe, based on this principle. It worked by blocking endogenous cannabinoid binding to neuronal CB1 receptors. Following this principle, certain strains of cannabis naturally stimulate or suppress appetite in a similar way. For example, the cannabinoid THCV is a natural CB1 and CB2 antagonist, that suppresses hunger by blocking the CB1 receptors. THCV has the same euphoric effect as THC and it is thought to block the pleasurable or rewarding sensations we experience when eating, thus reducing hunger and cravings. THCV is also known to have a quicker onset and slightly shorter duration than THC. THCV is only one of the many cannabinoids, terpenoids, and flavonoids that are pharmacologically active and work synergistically to provide the medical benefits of marijuana we are only just beginning to understand. It is thought that the endocannabinoid system keeps the body in a state of homeostasis in many ways by helping to regulating mood, pain, inflammation, neurological, gastrointestinal, metabolic and other issues.

“Marijuana users tend to consume more calories than non-users, yet retain a lower Body Mass Index (BMI)” Medical marijuana patients who are interested in weight management and strains that suppress appetite may want to ask their Dispensary for appropriate local recommendations. Look for landrace strains from South and East Africa like Durban Poison, Green Crunch and Haze strains. These strains are typically high in the cannabinoid THCV. A

woman in her thirties struggled with bouts of depression and anger. Her anger seemed to have a life of its own. It was usually directed at her husband and frequently was out of proportion to anything that he had actually done. She would dig up old resentments, focus on his shortcomings, and basically make life miserable for both of them. Her anger had become like a drug, destructively inflating her ego. When she wasn’t angry, she was depressed or anxious. Through the course of therapy she started to loosen the hold of anger and negativity in her life. She began to appreciate her husband more and to accept him as he was. Although recognizing his faults, she came to see and place greater value on his positive qualities, such as how he was a good father to their son. As she made more of an effort to live in the present and let go of her anger, she enjoyed more periods of closeness and harmony with her husband. However, after one such period of relative peace, her mood and perspective started to slip backwards into dissatisfaction, discouragement and anger. It was at this time that she had the following dream. I am with my husband in a dark, cold place. He is emotionally distraught, crying. He tells me that Rita, my best friend from childhood, has died. Then I am in our apartment bedroom. I have the sense that my mother is also dead. Although the room is dark, I see Rita lying motionless on the bed. I am scared and upset and begin shaking her, hoping to bring her back to life. Surprisingly, she starts to move on her own. I feel very relieved and go into the kitchen to get her some water. In the kitchen I see my mother is alive. She is washing the floor. I also see four people I don’t recognize there. Three are sitting at the kitchen table but the fourth is a rough looking woman. She reminds me of someone I would have known during my adolescence when I was abusing drugs. My mother has gone to help my friend and I want to go back to the bedroom with her but this woman doesn’t want me to. She tells me I don’t need to be there. When I disagree with her she starts yelling and swearing at me. I tell her to leave my apartment and push her out the door. Then I hear the sound of a gas engine. I grab a knife from the drawer but the woman comes in with a chainsaw. She backs me into the corner of the kitchen and cuts through my wrist before I awaken.

ENCOUNTERING T W

The dream begins in a cold, dark place. This reflects the lack of consciousness and emotional coldness that often characterize her relationship with her husband. Negativity, irritation, and resentment tend to dominate her feelings towards him. When she is in this state it is as if her friend and mother have died for she associates both women with an optimistic and loving outlook on life. It is her more feeling-oriented husband who awakens her to the “death” (neglect) of this part of herself. In the next scene the atmosphere of death is again present; it is dark and her friend lies still upon her bed. Now, however, the dreamer is more conscious

of the loss of her own cheerful and loving side. She is moved by the intensity of her husband’s (her inner masculine’s) grief and shakes her friend, trying to bring her back to life. Her friend begins to move, revived by the dreamer’s own depth of feeling. (The dreamer’s passion and her friend are perhaps one and the same.) In the kitchen she encounters her mother, who is also alive. Her mother is washing the floor, representative of her own need to “clean house.” In this case, cleaning house would mean addressing unpleasant issues in her own life, such as her hurtful behavior towards her husband. New life in the form of loving feelings have come into the dreamer’s life,

and the quality of the relationship declined. The dream illustrates the fact that lasting shifts in attitude or perspective can be difficult to achieve and maintain. Such changes are often resisted by the ruling “government” within the psyche. These inner battles are reflected in our dreams, in psychological and physical symptoms, and in outer world events such as social pressures to remain the same. The dream also shows that the dreamer feels overpowered by the aggressive woman inside of her. She has come to rely on anger and negativity to get by in the world. She has become so habituated to these attitudes that they have become automatic and unconscious parts of her identity. One way for the dreamer to work with her dream for personal growth would be to dialogue in her imagination with the aggressive woman. Can’t Sleep? That Old Devil Adrenalin Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

O

ur wonderful stress glands, the adrenals, sit on top of the kidneys. They have several parts, an outside and an inside. The outside part (cortex) makes hormones such as cortisone, progesterone, DHEA, pregnenelone and others. The inside part (medulla) makes adrenalin, the hormone which gives us the flight/fright reaction when confronted with danger. Unfortunately, this reaction is a normal state of affairs for people under stress. It feels like drinking too much coffee or tea or running away from the tiger. One of the jobs of the adrenal cortex is storing blood sugar in the liver. If the adrenal is stressed out by any stress, pain, fear, relationship stress, money stress, work stress or old abuse stress it doesn’t store enough blood sugar in the liver. If one runs out of blood sugar at 2 o’clock the morning the brain goes into survival mode and signals the adrenal gland to dump adrenalin into blood stream to convert fat into blood sugar so the body doesn’t die. This is all great except now the adrenalin is racing and it is like trying to sleep on speed. Very difficult, wide awake. Then the mind goes through all the unsolved problems of the day and makes the situation worse.

Rebuild the Adrenal and Block Adrenalin Adrenal rebuilding and support is a large topic and I will give some of our favorite strategies. Paradoxically one of the best adrenal support techniques is eight or nine hours of sleep per night. Reducing stress with lifestyle adjustment, meditation, exercise, sugar avoidance and good nutritional support such as vitamin C and B vitamins are all helpful. We have been using a weekly shot of adrenal complex with B12 and folic acid in a time release base which can give steady blood sugar for a week. This is a feel good shot that has been around from Hollywood since the 1950s and our clinic has offered this for over 40 years. For the really shell-shocked patients we give an intravenous infusion of vitamins, minerals, cortisol, amino acids and specific amino acids that are calmative such as tryptophan, taurine and glycine.

24

The Progesterone Revolution For forty years we have used progesterone cream for all the female ills surrounding too much estrogen, such as PMS, painful periods, ovarian cysts, fibrocystic breast disease, endometriosis, etc. However, when we met Dr. Michael Platt, MD and read his book The Miracle of Bioidentical Hormones, he emphasized the adrenalin blocking power of progesterone. It is also a GABA promoter, one of the body’s major calmative neurotransmitters and works like Valium, Ativan, Xanax, Klonipin and the like without side effects and addiction. By rubbing the progesterone cream on the inner forearms and wrists it turns down anxiety and panic attacks in about five minutes. It also returns people to sleep in three to five minutes. The dose needs to be 50 or 60 mg and can be repeated every few minutes if needed. Progesterone is not feminizing so men and children can also use it and there is no problem with overdose. It just makes people more relaxed and is also an adrenal cortex hormone to help rebuild adrenal function. Taking progesterone orally before bed in 100 to 200 mg dosage is even more sedative. It turns into allopregnenelone and has more calmative effects for sleep. It is best to have this prepared by a compounding pharmacy to insure purity. Commercial versions have additives, colors, waxes, etc.

Amino Acids and Melatonin for Sleep Amino acids manufacture the brain chemicals which are calming and promote sleep. Tryptophan makes serotonin (calmative and good mood) and melatonin. 5HTP is also a precursor of serotonin. Tryptophan from 500 mg to 2,000 mg before bed can be helpful for many people with insomnia. 5HTP at 100 to 200 mg is also good. Melatonin is a pineal gland hormone that regulates our wake sleep cycle and is great for insomnia. The effective dose can vary between .25mg to 200 mg. Dr. Clearfield likes to take ½ the dose after supper and the rest before bed. Side effects are only excessive drowsiness in the AM if too much is used.

April 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

Theanine from green tea is also sedative. De Stress is a combination of 10 amino acids derived from milk protein (it is not milk) that blocks cortisol receptors in the brain to promote sleep. GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) is a brain chemical that is sedative and can be taken before bed or anytime for calming. Even better I think is beta, phenyl GABA (phenibut, which crosses the blood brain barrier better). Patients love our Tranquility or Kavinase which contain phenibut. They also contain the amino acid taurine which is a very calming. Phosphatidyl serine is another amino acid that promotes steady blood sugar at night and is best taken after supper.

A Whole World of Sedative Herbs For millennia man has used herbal preparations for the maintenance of their health. Sedative herbs are no exception. There are wonderful preparations of Valerian, Vervain, St. John’s wort, Lemon balm, Passsiflora, Avena sativa, Pulsatilla, Magnolia, Hops, Mugwort, Nettles and hundreds more. Our Avena Sativa combination from Germany is especially great.

Don’t Forget Homeopathy Homeopathic remedies can be great for sleep. Coffea cruda (gives the opposite of coffee), Argentum nitricum, Arsenicum album, Nux vomica and many more.

It is always good to use natural remedies for sleep which can address underlying health issues, toxicities and deficiencies before resorting to drugs which all have potentially serious side effects.

Pickle Juice or Bananas Treating Chronic Venous Insufficiency Stefan V. Franciosa, DO, MBA, Board-certified in Vascular and Interventional Radiology

P

ickle juice or bananas? Which do you use for your leg cramps? To enhance athletic performance, athletes commonly use these remedies for cramping and aches in the legs. While most of us typically dismiss leg cramps as a necessary evil from being an athlete, spending a long day in the garden weeding, “overdoing it” or merely a nuisance, there really is a treatable pathological condition that should not be overlooked. Chronic Venous Insufficiency or CVI, is a great masquerader. CVI is twice as common as coronary artery disease and five times more common than peripheral arterial disease. This prevalent and often overlooked medical diagnosis classically presents as tired, achy and heavy legs that may itch, burn or even be tender to the touch. Often night cramping of the legs and uncontrollable movements of the legs in bed or at rest can be exhausting and painful signs of this disease. What most people are not aware of is that these symptoms are commonly misdiagnosed as “Restless Leg Syndrome”, “Peripheral Neuropathy”, or “Sciatica”. The numbness and tingling sensations experienced by some patients are actually due to an active inflammatory process that is ongoing beneath the surface of the skin, most of the time not visible to the naked eye. I constantly hear from patients that they are told their symptoms are part of the normal aging process and that there is little that can be done to help them. Fortunately, the signs of CVI are easily recognizable. Just by looking at your legs, you may easily see swelling and redness in the skin, darkening of the skin near the calf or ankle, blue and/or red lines of varying lengths that seem to increase over time (“spider veins”), non-healing wounds that may seem to be ‘wet’, flaky and itchy skin, or the obvious bulging of the blood vessel (“varicose vein”) itself. After evaluation by a qualified vein specialist, most patients are first instructed to exercise, wear medical grade compression stockings (20-30 mmHg), take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines and elevate their legs. Typically, these initial steps fail to adequately address the primary complaints of discomfort and, until recently, the patient was often left with the intimidating thought of a vein stripping procedure performed under general anesthesia in a hospital operating room.

perform what used to be major surgery (requiring scalpels and blood loss) to be completed as a brief outpatient procedure performed without a major incision having you out the door in less than an hour. The procedure is called a Radiofrequency Ablation. Many of you Venefit RF Procedure ©Covidien may be familiar with this technology as it is commonly used in pain medicine for joint pain and even for an irregular heartbeat, such as atrial fibrillation. ™

Appropriate medical workup always involves an evidence-based diagnosis. In this case, the evidence is clearly documented in a diagnostic ultrasound examination. This ultrasound is more comprehensive than the ultrasound typically ordered by your doctor should there be concerns over a clot in the deep leg veins. While the standard lower extremity venous ultrasound study surveys for an obstruction to blood flow in a deep vein, this should not be confused with the more comprehensive vascular ultrasound examination performed to evaluate for CVI. This study, performed by a Registered Vascular Technologist and optimally interpreted by a radiologist, not only assesses the deep veins but the superficial veins as well. These shallower veins are predominantly responsible for both the visible skin changes, as well as, the chronic discomfort experienced on a daily basis. Fortunately, most commercial insurance companies and Medicare cover the costs associated with both the diagnostic vascular ultrasound, as well as, the therapeutic options including the radiofrequency ablation procedure. The radiofrequency ablation procedure is not the only type of therapeutic option available for CVI. There are other therapies that are used in conjunction with the RF procedure and help to optimize results and delay the progression of disease. The other procedures employed for comprehensive vein treatment include ambulatory phlebectomy and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy. The extent and distribution of the disease will dictate the combination of therapies recommended for you. Chronic venous insufficiency can and should be treated to prevent the adverse sequela of more advanced disease leading to skin discoloration in the calf and ankle or even worse — a non-healing wound/ulcer. If you suffer from tired, achy, heavy, crampy legs that can be restless, you can seek the advice of a vein specialist to properly evaluate and manage your disease. Stay fit and healthy! Always make your juices delicious: start with more apples if you need to, until your body gets used to the taste of “green.”

No slow juicer or “no time” to juice? Simply blend up your ingredients with a bit of water to get them going, then strain this thick smoothie through a nut milk bag. There’s your lovely juice.
