Aging Parents and the Holidays The Red Tent

he Holidays are here. It is time to make our way through extra to-do lists, including more visits to shopping malls and grocery stores. We will spend most of our free time getting ready for, and attending, various “family and friend” gatherings. But, as we whirl through this time of year--exchanging gifts, sipping festive drinks and running from one party to the next--take care in noticing what matters most: the love and peace we find in the people who truly make our lives worthwhile. In the middle of November, after a wonderful weekend getaway with my children, we began our journey home, mentally preparing for our quiet Sunday evening return. That, unfortunately, did not happen as planned, as someone else had already been there… After the shock of losing ALL of my jewelry, our Wii and other small electronics, I endured the realization that someone had been in my home, my sanctuary. This was our space to reconnect, rejuvenate and unwind in a safe haven. That feeling was stripped from me. I felt helpless, vulnerable and angry toward this unknown negative being. I did my best to implement some of the ideologies behind Radical Forgiveness, Buddhism and Christianity. I wanted to overcome my anger, in order to move on. After a few days, I realized that I completely coped with the material loss. That was the easiest part to manage. Yes, there was irreplaceable jewelry from grandparents and loved ones, but I was able to let that go fairly easily. However, I still felt completely violated and unsafe. I didn’t know how I would get past those feelings. But, before I even had time to think about my emotional recovery, my friends and family were at my side. Be it physically, over the phone or via e-mail, they came out of the woodworks, showering their support. I can genuinely say that no matter what you go through, and no matter what you have or do not have, your family and friends can help carry you through the toughest of times…and help you see that love truly is the ultimate gift. It’s more valuable than any material gift I have ever received. On behalf of myself and Healthy Beginnings Staff, we wish you a holiday season filled with gifts of love and peace. HB Pause. he word star has many connotations. For some, stars are luminous balls of plasma, offering speculation on past, present and future. For others, the star represents their history and faith. To many, a star conveys hope, joy and harmony. We use them as décor, we watch them on TV, and we hang our star-filled flags to honor American humanity. The “star” is brilliant and vibrant, yet elusive; it holds a deeper meaning within. Similarly, the star anise possesses a myriad of uses. Scientifically known as Illicium verum, star anise means “eight-horn,” or “eight corners,” in Chinese. The fruit is harvested from its small evergreen tree, native to Vietnam and China. Its flavor resembles that of anise and is used in food and medicinal recipes alike. It flavors liquors, baked goods, meats, soups and teas. It has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to remedy rheumatism, digestion and cold-stagnation. It is also a popular ingredient in anti-flu drugs. Whether you use the star symbolically, or to add a touch of warmth to your food and drink, make note of the feelings derived from its use. Pay attention to the vibration it emits, and feel its energy; for there must be a reason behind the star’s historical presence. HB

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB

n November 12th and 13th, the Granlibakken Conference Center and Lodge in Tahoe City hosted the annual Lake Tahoe’s Women’s Wellness Weekend, “an event fusing Eastern tradition with Western practices to offer you balance, rejuvenation and well-being.” There were over 130 registrants, and more than 20 health-focused businesses involved in the event. Healthy Beginnings Magazine was invited to join the event as well. We were able to attend as participants, enjoying the conference from a “healthy woman” perspective, as opposed to just having our magazine blinders on. The conference began on Saturday, November 12th, however we arrived the evening before. We were able to settle into our accommodations and get ready for the coming weekend; which, began on an early note. Attendees could choose to join a morning session of yoga, or a friendly 5k fun-run, both at 7:15 am. Exercise is a wonderful way to get your body going, and the mental juices flowing.

Gluten Sensitivity:

It’s Real, So Why the Confusion? Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

A

The most common reasons for the confusion and resistance are:

host of new and ongoing research studies confirm that sensitivity or allergies to gluten is a serious health issue. In fact, the rapidly emerging volume of research and welldocumented, peer-reviewed medical, neurological, endocrine, rhuematolical, GI and nutritional journals, is overwhelming in its confirmation of the condition, and the importance of its implication to overall health. Not just gut health, but even more so, brain and neurological health.

“My doctor says ‘It’s a Hollywood fad’,” or “There is no such thing as a wheat sensitivity”, “It [the fad] will go away like everything else.” Gluten sensitivity is not a fad, and it’s not going away anytime soon. In fact, research would suggest its understanding is more likely to explode. Try an online “Google” or “PubMed” search on “gluten and women”, “gluten and mood swings”, “gluten and the brain and nervous system”, “gluten and metabolism”, “gluten and bone loss”, “gluten and blood sugar,” or even “gluten and behavioral disorders,” and it may become difficult to deny the connection between gluten and Celiac disease. One would also find a plethora of medically-reviewed studies and journals relating gluten as an influence or trigger to schizophrenia, seizers, neuropathies, ADHD and autistic spectrum

Yet, while counseling patients with these conditions on how gluten allergies and their cross sensitivities effect tissue damage and symptoms, and the need to eliminate these substances from their diet, the functional nutrition clinician frequently runs into resistance. Confusion and misunderstanding will often cause the patients to not accept the dietary recommendations with confidence, or at all. Even after the patient has definitely tested positive for the gluten allergy or sensitivity, there is often resistance; the patient’s recovery is doomed to fail before it begins.

disorders, Alzheimer’s, MS, migraines, nutritional anemias, bone loss, depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, diabetes, fibromyalgia, and more. The data on this topic is substantial.

tal allergens, bacterial infections, viral infections, yeast, mold, drugs, chemicals (think cleaning fluids), tobacco smoke, artificial sweeteners, blood sugar, thyroid or adrenal imbalances, and once again—unfortunately--more, much more. This is a big part of the dilemma.

“My doctor tested me for it--I don’t have it.” Straight and simple: the standard testing technology of blood serum, saliva, fecal, and endoscopic biopsy, is just not good enough yet. Most doctors use the blood test, and serology alone does not provide enough data to rule out the allergy or sensitivity. Only HLADQ2 or HLADQ8 genetic testing is close to 100 percent accurate. This test can be found online and performed at home, or by an informed chronic pain physician. If you test positive for gluten sensitivity, the test is highly unlikely to be incorrect. It is not yet embraced by the medical model, but it is performed in CLIA certified labs, the same labs that certify all medical diagnostic testing.

Are you really off gluten? Sure doc, at least most of the time. Unfortunately, gluten is variably symptomatic, depending on the patient. Some patients (Group one: 30 percent) are lucky and experience immediate responses to gluten exposure (I.e. Celiac patients). But most (Group two: 70 percent) gluten sensitive people are not immediately reactive to gluten exposure; and in most cases, are not even aware that gluten exposure may be triggering their neurological symptoms (anxiety, depression, fatigue, brain fog, numbness and tingling in hands and feet). The confusion for each is different.

If you do any test, and you test positive, then you are gluten sensitive. “But, I tested positive, stopped eating gluten, and I don’t feel any better!”

Group one, who reacts to gluten immediately, may not do so after no exposure for months and then think they can eat it again because their gut is healed. This does not mean you can eat it

Or, maybe you felt better for a while, but it (your symptoms) came back. Then there is something else in addition to the gluten sensitivity that is occurring in your system. A partial list of “something else”--mostly cross sensitivity allergens and metabolic imbalances--includes: any other food or environmen-

Gluten Sensitivity:

It’s Real, So Why the Confusion? Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B. Continued from Previous Page again, ever. You must remove it 100 percent from your diet, as damage will reoccur in your gut and probably more subtly in your nervous system and thyroid. Removing it 100 percent is not easy because gluten seems to be in almost everything. If you have a proven sensitivity--regardless of the gluten sensitive group you belong to--it is destroying your gut, and some other part of your body EVERYTIME you eat it! Your thyroid, brain or joints, it could be affecting any or all of them. The obvious problem is in group two individuals, as many of them do not realize that gluten exposure is contributing to their symptoms. Both groups must avoid all gluten and its cross sensitivities permanently, or ultimately suffer the consequences. It is not an easy challenge.

to know all factors that will sabotage your efforts and interfere with causative correction and reduction of your gluten related symptoms, or you will quit the diet and remain ill. And why wouldn’t you? It’s not a fun diet until you start feeling normal, then and only then is it worth it.

Permanently does not mean being gluten free most of the time or “I’m gluten free all week, except for my Mrs. Fields chocolate chip cookie on Saturday night.” The scientific data is clear, one exposure to gluten (as small as ½ piece of wheat toast per month) can stay in your system from four days to eight months, making every exposure reactive for a long time. This reduces the ability for you to “heal” or feel symptomatic relief by 60 to 70 percent, or even no relief at all.

1. Hadjivassiliou M, et al. 2002. Gluten sensitivity as a neurological illness. J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 72: 560-3

If you are contemplating going gluten free, get a Functional Medicine workup first. Do the genetic test. Find out about any cross sensitivities and immune stimulators you may be taking that are interfering with your recovery. Have your thyroid, adrenals, gut and brain checked out. Going gluten free is no joke. Find a coach, and do it right. Good luck. HB References:

Deciding to go off gluten is not a simple lifestyle change. It requires certainty that you are not giving up all of your favorite foods for something that is not proven. You need the certainty of positive test results--for both primary gluten sensitivities and cross sensitivities, and possible immune stimulators (a whole other subject)--to know what should and should not be in your body. You need to know which foods contain gluten. You need

& the Holidays

Aging Parents Written By Kevin Vania

A

s adults, holidays are often the only opportunities we get to see our parents in person. Most of us lead busy lives away from our parents and grandparents, and we don’t always have the opportunity to converse with them, apart from regular phone calls, emails, and other relatively impersonal modes of communication. Holidays are an opportunity for us to personally observe our parents who are experiencing the wear and tear of life. It is a time for us to look for signs that our aging family members need our help.

What signs should we be looking for? Memory problems are typically the first warning signs. Your parents might be repeating themselves in a single conversation without realizing it. They might start losing things, missing appointments, or forgetting to take their medications.

Deteriorating health becomes inevitable at a point in our lives. Our parents and grandparents are all going to experience unfamiliar changes that come with age. It is important to recognize any change before it leaves our loved ones at risk of personal injury and other health concerns or outside abuse; elderly scams are becoming more and more common among today’s swindlers.

Problems managing money. Late bills and unopened mail are good cause for concern. Your parents might start to exhibit strange or uncharacteristic ways of handling their money, like making unusual donations or buying into get-rich-quick schemes.

While some signs are obvious that an aging parent needs our help, there are many that aren’t as perceivable. It may come as a shock to us when their behaviors aren’t quite as we remember them to be in our vision of our parents, as healthy adults. It is important for us to pay attention to any and all signs of aging.

Visit www.HBmag.com

Strange shifts in their mood: confusion or depression that seems to stem from nowhere. Are your parents isolating themselves from social situations? They may also be losing interest in their hobbies or are discontent with their day-to-day routine.

Poor balance or coordination. Not wanting to get up and walk around because of joint and muscle pain could be a sign of serious health problems. Unexplained bruises might mean they have fallen. Unexplained dents or scratches on their vehicles should also be a concern. It is important to address signs of aging. What can we do to confront the issue? In asking our parents about our observations and concerns, we may fear the response we get. They might be upset or offended at the things we point out, but it is imperative that we overcome that fear because it is their wellbeing that is a stake. Protecting our loved ones is the most important thing at hand.

The Red Tent Written By Dr. Tory Clark

D

uring biblical times in the Middle East, the Red Tent was a hut where women would gather on the dark moon and be relieved of their daily responsibilities. Their cycles were synched, and in the tent, they shared laughter, joy, sorrow, blood, births and growing pains. It was a special time of sisterhood where they were one in the womb of the great mother: The Red Tent. These gatherings have grown across cultures for women today. They provide a safe haven for women to share ideas and life stories. The traditions of blood sacrifice have their origin in the “sacrifice” of blood, which poured forth from the woman when there was no new life for it to nourish. However, the menstrual blood was given freely and then used to nourish the tribe or the earth in other ways, and no one suffered, unlike later more corrupted versions of sacrifice. Historically, the rituals of many traditions from Taoists to the Ancient Egyptians involved the ingestion of menstrual blood mixed with red wine to increase spiritual power. The Ancient Hindu believed that the power of creation was created from the thickened blood of the Great Mother. In Ancient Greece, spring festivals included the spreading on the earth of corn mixed with menstrual blood to increase fertility. When women are in alignment, their monthly cycle brings them into connection with nature, and gives them the ability to guide men with the wisdom of their wombs. Men can offer an important role in their blood cycle if women help them understand how they can provide support, comfort and love. Women can do this by first discovering their own unique needs during this sacred time.

“When a woman is having her moon, her blood is flowing, and this blood is full of mysterious powers that are related to childbearing. At this time, she is particularly powerful...a woman’s power and a man’s are opposites, not in a necessarily bad way, but in a good way. Because of the power a woman has during this time, it is best that, out of respect for her men and for their medicinal trinkets and beliefs, she stay away from them. During this time, the men would often build a small lodge for the woman while other female relatives serve on her needs.” – Judith Fitzgerald

Menstruation is the introspective moment of a woman’s cycle. It is a time to retreat, reflect, release, recover and celebrate. Perhaps this seems like a foreign idea? If so, you can find out more information at your local Red Tent gatherings. You can expect to experience your body and your cycle from a new and refreshing perspective, through valuable educational discussions. By celebrating and acknowledging our differences, without judgment, together, we women, sister to sister, can cultivate our talents and skills to influence and promote change in the world around us. Live Cell Therapy:

Medicine for the 21st Century Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

W

Aside from presenting some truly amazing cases of reversals of Down’s syndrome in children, this book described 117 conditions and diseases in which cellular therapy had been found useful, and detailed the combinations of cellular suspensions used.

hat if there was a therapy that offered the same regenerative, healing effects of stem cells, without the moral dilemma of using human fetuses or frozen embryos. Amazingly, there is just such a treatment option available. It was pioneered by a Swiss physician, Dr. Paul Niehans, over 90 years ago, using pre-term animal tissues. He discovered that not only are these “cross species” tissues effective, but the pre-term tissue does not trigger an allergic reaction in humans.

It was not until 1986 that a California institute published, The Biochemistry of Live Cell Therapy, the first publication in English, which attempted to explain some of the actual scientific mechanics of this overlooked form of treatment.

If you have ever heard of the “rich and famous” going to Europe for “rejuvenation” treatments, this is it! People such as Dwight Eisenhower, Pope Pius XII, Charlie Chaplin, Pablo Picasso and Joseph Kennedy are among those who took advantage of this therapy.

Of the hundreds of thousands of injections given in Europe during the nine decades of live cell therapy history, it is notable that so few fatalities or significant side effects had been noted. Dr. Kuhnau, who used this therapy for nearly 40 years, always insisted that no significant side effects, let alone fatalities, had ever been reported.

Unfortunately, there is little known about it in this country because the vast majority of the 330 books, monographs and articles published on it since 1983 have been in languages other than English. There tends to be a very arrogant attitude in the field of medicine in this country, looking down on any research not published in this country.

Despite having found favor with some of the major figures of the 20th century, and being found to be legitimate and legal, it is still considered “dubious or experimental” by the monopoly-oriented US media and medical establishment. However, people can investigate and avail themselves of this valuable therapy option. HB

Conditions such as liver failure, kidney failure, congestive heart failure, and severe degenerative nervous system diseases, have all been helped by this therapy. There are even cases of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus that have been “cured” by this treatment in Germany.

Chronic Fatigue – Fibromyalgia

Part 1: The Adrenal/Thyroid Connection Written By Michael Gerber MD, HMD

T

he most frequent chronic complaint is fatigue. Patients never feel right; many can’t get out of bed and are also usually depressed, anxious and suffer from insomnia, poor memory and concentration and frequently dizziness. The origins of chronic fatigue are truly vast. Recently, a 32 year old, four foot ten, 95 pound young woman presented with a history of sexual abuse, loss of both parents, her mother was very stressed during her pregnancy, she was on disability with RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy-referred pains all over the body) fibromyalgia and multiple drug regimen failure; she had asthma, globus hystericus, gastroparesis and gastritis (heart burn). I knew I had my work cut out for me. Building trust with a totally fearful, energy-less girl, with absolutely no self esteem and no money, is an art form. One has to go with their best and least expensive therapy, which also gives gentle results quickly. Incidentally, her globus hystericus (lump in the throat) was immediately and permanently relieved with one treatment of Neural Therapy, using injections of procaine and Spascupreel from Heel, in intradermal wheels (bubbles) in the skin. Likewise, the gastroparesis (very slow empting stomach and digestion) abated with the overall therapy as well.

soy, coffee creamers, non organic everything, stomach acid blockers, statin drugs, cigarettes, microwave ovens, aluminum cooking utensils, excessive alcohol, and so many other environmental toxins. I just started a new patient a couple of months back who looked at me absolutely incredulously when I told her that there were over 300 different neurological syndromes associated with aspartame (NutraSweet) ingestion, up to multiple sclerosis. She was consuming eight to 10 diet sodas with five Xanax through the day, “just like my mother did”. Her husband was nodding his head through the entire visit, as she had terrific fatigue, anger and little memory.

Low adrenal and thyroid always mean poor metabolism. “When your adrenals are weak, you leak,” is one of my favorite platitudes. Low adrenal hormones cause wasting (loss) of sodium, chloride, and according to some authors, neurotransmitters (brain chemicals controlling mood and memory). Thyroid weakness causes hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) and inability to absorb minerals and proteins. Getting these two organs back on track has an immediate normalizing effect on our miraculous organism. HB

o you have a negative story you keep repeating, something you feel fully justified in re-telling? Something that makes you angry or sad every time you think of it? Then either do something about it, or hush. If you can’t do anything about it, focus on what you DO want and leave the old story in the past, where it belongs. The purpose of pivoting your mind to something pleasant is so that you will feel better. Your feelings have everything to do with what you’re attracting; you cannot feel bad and attract something good. Every thought and its accompanying emotion has a vibrational frequency, like a radio signal, and beams out in all directions, attracting the people, conditions and situations that match the thought.

Do you have a supervisor you think could win the World’s Worst Boss Contest? Then either move to another job, or use some energy techniques to defuse your anger and frustration. Continuing to stew over any negative situation simply attracts more of the same. Continuing to think about a negative situation also causes your body to manufacture cortisol, the stress hormone, which was designed to be in your cells for only a very short time. By keeping your defensive system on high alert all the time through stress, the long-term presence of cortisol damages the cells and compromises your immune system, inviting opportunistic diseases and all manner of aches and pains. Ever notice that when you tell a negative story you feel the same emotions you felt when you first experienced it, and you also evoke those emotions from your friends or acquaintances? Then, they start in on their stories, and you’re soon in an unconscious contest to see who can out-do each

They’ll change the subject or remove themselves from your presence. Why would anyone consciously allow themselves to be brought down to a low, dense, negative vibrational level? If they care about themselves, they should run away from you as fast as possible so that they can get their own thoughts (vibrational frequencies) back on track, and continue attracting what they want, rather than what you’re dishing out.

Why do we focus on the negative?

Our society seems to encourage complaining and telling sad stories. Maybe you grew up thinking it is normal, because everyone else was doing it. It’s not helpful in any way. It’s a dysfunctional habit that breeds

more dysfunction. So do yourself, your family, and everyone around you, the huge favor of raising your consciousness, your vibration, your attitude, and your level of joy, so as to enhance your experience of being here in this body at this time. You can always control your response to the actions of others. This is important because how you think about a situation evokes your emotions. Those emotions then drive your words and actions. Look back to a certain situation you’ve lived through, and follow that progression. For example, do you remember what your thoughts were at the time you were reprimanded or criticized for something? They were probably defensive, which in turn created the emotion of anger. That emotion drove your words and actions, so then you probably told the story to your co-workers, your spouse and friends. You spread it all around, making everybody uncomfortable in some way. You brought them down to your level, plus re-lived the situation over and over in the telling; bringing yourself down

Start getting creative about what you can do to improve your situation and stop telling the same old stories. Do some research. Find some way to adjust the condition, or get more schooling, or look for new opportunities and careers in different places. Change the way you’re thinking; your old programming (thoughts, beliefs and expectations) from family and culture may not be serving you any more, if it ever did. Exterior situations change constantly, and your body is also naturally in a constant state of change. So, we have to continue to change our attitudes and mental approach to life too, or we become stale, stuck and sick. Change your thinking and you change your life.

More immediately, change your thinking and you change your health. The state of your body is directly affected by the level of stress you allow yourself to experience. Do you think that you can’t control your stress, that someone else is “doing it to you? Wrong. You choose how you respond to everything. If you find yourself enduring great stress, and if you still want to stay in the job or marriage or situation you find yourself in, you’ll need to find a way to reduce the stress, or your body will do it for you by becoming incapacitated. And it has thousands of ways to do that. Your body can’t tell you in so many words what’s happening within, so it’s going to show you by aches and pains, ailments and diseases. Margarines and “Spreadable” Butters: What a Crock! Written By Lissie Lyles

Written By Lissie Lyles

T

he butter vs. margarine debate...what to say about it? The only really surprising thing about the whole issue is that margarine has managed to successfully disguise itself as a health food for so long. Meanwhile, real butter, a whole food that has been used safely for generations, has somehow earned a bad rap for itself. Butter vs. margarine: the closer you look at it, the more of a head-scratcher it becomes. Let’s see who comes out on top when we compare the ingredients of a popular margarine product, with those of actual butter. Watch them do battle below.

Country crock Butter spread: Ingredients: Vegetable(s) Oil Blend (Soybean(s) Oil Liquid, Soybean(s) Oil, Partially Hydrogenated, Cottonseed Oil, Hydrogenated, Water, Whey (Milk), Salt, Vegetable(s) Mono and Diglycerides, Soy Lecithin, (Potassium Sorbate, Calcium Disodium EDTA used to protect quality), Citric Acid, Artificial Flavors, Vitamin A Palmitate, Beta Carotene color(s). This product is mostly composed of rancid vegetable oils, with dashes of additives and preservatives thrown in. Nothing related to a cow is mentioned until ingredient number five. This product also contains hydrogenated oils, which as we learned in last

month’s Ingredient Watch are best avoided like the plague. The process of hydrogenating oil is when oils are transformed from a liquid state to semi-solid by using nickel oxide (tiny metal particles) as a catalyst and blasting the oil with hydrogen at high heat and pressure. This is oil that is already rancid as it was extracted, using high heat methods that create dangerous free radicals. The artificial flavors and coloring are necessary to mask margarines actual color (dull grey) and to conceal its chemical aftertaste.

in butter have antimicrobial, antitumor and immune system supporting properties, especially 12-carbon lauric acid, not found in other animal fats.

Fats that are partially hydrogenated actually block utilization of essential fatty acids, causing problems such as sexual dysfunction, and paralysis of the immune system. Hydrogenated fats are associated with many serious diseases including diabetes, obesity, birth defects, sterility, and problems with bones and tendons. The consumption of margarine has been implicated in connection to high cholesterol levels, heart disease and cancer and yet it is still marketed as a health food. Even more horrifying, is that it is often suggested as beneficial for people who are already facing heart disease or high cholesterol.

1. Fallon, Sally, with Mary G Enig Ph.D, “Nourishing Traditions,” Revised Second Edition, New Trends Publishing, Washington DC, 2001

When you compare the two side by side, butter clearly comes out swinging. It deserves a second chance in our kitchen, while the margarine should be cast out as an impostor, imitation “health food.” HB References:

And Organic Valley Pastured Butter: Ingredients: Pasteurized organic sweet cream, salt, microbial cultures. Even a quick glance at the two ingredient lists, side by side, should reveal the butter’s advantage: only three ingredients, while the former has upwards of 15. Butter is made by culturing milk with lactic acid to ripen the cream, before it is slow churned in small batches. This butter comes from pastured cows that grazed on grass, increasing the amount of beta-carotene and omega 3 in the milk. The cows were not given hormones or antibiotics, or fed GMO ingredients; all of which do have adverse health effects. When butter is made from high quality milk that came from cows that were able to live as they naturally would, that is to say, grazing on grass, the butter is more like what our ancestors enjoyed. Incidentally, butter is not given much credit, neither for the many vital nutrients it contains or some of its associated health benefits. Butter is rich in fat soluble vitamins such as A, D, K and E. Vitamin A is more easily absorbed and utilized from butter than it is from any other food source. Vitamins A and D are necessary for growth, healthy bones, proper development of the nervous system and brain, and for normal sexual development. Butter from grass fed cows also contains Activator X, a catalyst discovered by Dr. Weston Price, which helps the body easily absorb minerals such as maganese, zinc, chromium, and iodine. Butter contains a balanced ratio of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. Finally, the short and medium chain fatty acids

HERBS&SPICES

Mad for Masala Written By Allison Prater

G

aram masala is a blend of ground spices, common in North Indian and South Asian cuisines. It can be used alone or in combination with other spices. Its name translates from Hindi, meaning “hot mixture.” Though the garam refers more to the intensity of the spices, it is not hot in the same way as chili peppers, for example. Garam masala varies by region, with many different combinations that differ, according to regional or personal taste. No single masala is considered more authentic than another. The spices that make up a masala are toasted before being ground together. Some recipes call for the spices to be combined with liquids such as vinegar or coconut milk; in others recipes, onions or garlic may be added. Sometimes the flavors are carefully blended to create a balanced effect, while other times the aim is to emphasize one specific spice. Masala chai is a popular beverage made by brewing tea with aromatic spices. Chai literally translates to “tea,” making the expression “chai tea” somewhat of a redundancy. Again, the recipes and methods of preparation vary by region and taste. A masala chai is traditionally made by boiling a mixture of milk and water with loose leaf tea, sweeteners and whole spices. Black tea, such as Assam, is typically used for the base and most often combined with cardamom, cinnamon, clove, fennel, ginger and black pepper. The Kashmiri version of chai is brewed with green tea instead of black tea, and sometimes includes almonds and saffron in its blend. Other possible ingredients include nutmeg, rose petals or liquorice root. Many common ingredients in garam masala include: black and white peppercorns, cloves, mace leaves, Malabar leaves, cumin seeds, cinnamon, cardamom pods, nutmeg, star anise, and coriander. Many of the commercial, pre-packaged mixtures contain higher proportions of less expensive spices, and may also contain dried red chili peppers, dried garlic, ginger powder, sesame, mustard seed, turmeric, and fennel. Ready ground spice mixtures have lost much of the complex aroma and flavor that fresh ground and toasted spices provide. Taking the time to make freshly toasted garam masala, or slow simmered masala chai, is a worthwhile endeavor to say the least. Enjoy the following recipes, and invoke the intoxicating flavors and aromas of India.

Simple Garam Masala Ingredients: 2 Tablespoons cumin seeds 2 Tablespoons coriander seeds 2 Tablespoons cardamom pods 1 Tablespoon black peppercorns 1 Tablespoon white peppercorns 1 Tablespoon star anise, crushed 1 stick cinnamon, crushed 1 teaspoon whole cloves 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg

Masala Chai Ingredients: 8 whole cloves 4 cardamom pods 2 cinnamon sticks 1 vanilla bean pod (optional) 6 cups water 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger (or fresh grated) 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper 1 cup milk (try coconut or almond if you’re dairy-free) 4 tablespoons honey or sweetener of choice (coconut sugar is also recommended) 4 tablespoons black tea of choice

Put the cumin, coriander, cardamom, peppercorns, anise, cinnamon and cloves in a dry heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Toast the spices, stirring occasionally, until they turn several shades darker and give off a sweet smoky aroma. This should take about 10 minutes. Do not raise the heat to quicken the process or the spices will brown prematurely, leaving the insides undercooked. Cool completely before transferring the mixture to a spice mill or coffee grinder, and grind into a powder, working in small batches if necessary. Stir in the nutmeg. Use immediately in a recipe or store in an airtight container for future use. Mix will keep up to 3 months if kept in a cool, dry place. HB

Using a mortar and pestle, or electric coffee grinder, crush the cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and vanilla until a powder consistency is reached. Combine these powdered spices with ginger and black pepper in a small saucepan, add the water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, remove from heat, cover and let steep for 5 minutes. Add the milk and sweetener to the pan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, add the tea, cover and let steep for 3 minutes. Stir the chai, strain mixture into a tea-pot, or directly into tea cups.

& the Holidays

Aging Parents

Written By Kevin Vania

Continued from Page 14

We have aging parents, with a list of elderly problems. What can we do to make the holidays go smoothly? Make sure your aging parent is involved in the festivities. Preparing to celebrate the holidays involves lots of preparation, so divvy up the work and make your parents feel special. They probably don’t want you waiting on them hand and foot anyways. The goal is to make them feel loved and just as important as they’ve always felt, not forgotten or unappreciated.

Find the right time to bring up your concerns in a private setting. Be calm and respectful in explaining your concerns and ask your loved ones if they share your observations and see a problem as well. Remember that your parents have a right to privacy, so know your boundaries, but don’t let the issue go unresolved. The sooner you act the better chance you have of avoiding future problems for you and your aging parents.

As you divvy up the holiday prep work, take efforts to ensure that no additional burdens are placed on local caregivers. Do your best to get along with family members and enjoy spending time together as a family. The holidays are not a time for conflict. And what about parents in a long-term care facility?

Don’t blame local family members. If you have brothers or sisters who see your parents on a regular basis, don’t assume they recognize all of your parents’ health needs. Oftentimes red flags go unnoticed by local siblings, as shifts in your parent’s behavior can be subtle. Criticizing family members about their efforts only undermines your common goal of helping your parents.

Deciding whether or not to bring your elderly parents home from a care facility for the holidays should all depend on their health. Take into consideration how it might affect them. Family gatherings can be stressful. Is their anxiety too high for such an event? Do they require caregiving that they would be unhappy turning over the responsibilities to you? It’s probably best to bring the holidays to the nursing home. Have separate holiday gatherings, one at your home and one at the nursing home. Prepare a special meal and practice the same traditions your parents remember. Bring old decorations and gifts that are reminiscent of the good old times.

Don’t be afraid to talk to others about your concerns as it can help you gain some perspective. Ask your parents if they have discussed any problems with their primary care doctor. If you are accompanying your parents to the doctor, make sure to identify problems they might otherwise overlook when speaking to the doctor, but remember that he or she is the patient in the room, not you. We don’t want our parents feeling controlled or ignored.

Enjoy the holidays and feel good knowing your parents’ needs are being met! HB References:

Feng Shui

Facts & Fiction Written By Rebecca Moore

an children benefit from the use of feng shui? Yes, because children especially respond to the energy of their environment. The location of bedrooms within the home can influence a child’s personality and behavior, and can influence defiance and misbehavior. Furniture placement within the bedroom can influence energy level or weight gain. A messy room, with piles of toys and clothes, will increase these influences. Bedrooms are important because this is where children spend the most time. Avoid clutter by storing things in furniture and closets. Light to medium paint colors are best, while bright colors should be avoided as they can increase hyperactivity in children. Beds should be placed with headboards against the wall with open space around the other three sides and nothing stored underneath. It is best to avoid bunk beds and canopies. The best use of feng shui for children is to help them become better students. There are many methods to take advantage of these energies--location, direction, furniture placement, annual energies and more. y daughter Lindsey and I were taking a walk with Beth the other day, looking at the way people had decorated for Halloween. Some of the comments Lindsey made seemed to be drawing an unfavorable comparison between my décor and that of the neighbors. “Hey,” I said. “I’ve nearly every element in my yard that we’ve seen so far, except the scarecrow.” Photo: PeterSpain.com Visit www.HBmag.com

“Your yard is pretty scary,” Beth said. “And you do so have scarecrow. I’m sure I saw one the other day in your yard, wearing a shabby straw hat, tattered jeans, and an old shirt that flapped in the wind. It had a bit more straw than usual, though.”

compost. However, I plan to use them as mulch under my tomatoes and beans next year. I fought fungus with my beans this summer, and those stalks might keep the beans up off the dirt, and away from fungal spores. It’s worth a try.

“I think that was Mom,” Lindsey said.

My straw isn’t neatly baled; most of it is still on the potatoes. I use my potato patch as a lazy woman’s way to expand the garden. I just rough up the soil a bit if it’s compacted, and spread manure on it, and then a thick layer of straw, and I plant the potatoes under the straw, directly on the manure. I make sure that I put in a few earthworms, and they, and the straw mulch, do the work of tilling the soil.

Martha Stewart probably wouldn’t approve of my garden attire, and she definitely wouldn’t approve of my current garden décor, although it is true that I’ve all of those characteristic fall elements. The difference is in the arrangement. In the typical yard, you’ll see bales of hay, with elaborately carved pumpkins arranged on and around them, perhaps nestled into piles of colorful autumn leaves. You’ll find cornstalks tied in neat shocks, and fake cobwebs arranged artistically on porch railings.

I’ll either turn the straw under, or just move it aside and plant squash or corn. Much of it is already rotten, and the top layer that isn’t will mulch next year’s crop, even as it continues to rot and enrich the soil.

My pumpkins, and the rest of my winter squash, are mostly stashed in a cool closet, but I had a bumper crop this year. As the leaves died back, I discovered delicatas and kabotas and even pumpkins that I overlooked when I gathered them just ahead of the first big frost. The damaged ones I’ve left in the garden. If you squint, some of those cracks do look like carvings.

My favorite part of gardening is when the easy thing to do is also the right thing to do. The fake cobwebs in my yard are actually strips of floating row cover I tied on PVC hoops which spanned my tomatoes. Although they may have looked a little tacky, at least until the Halloween season legitimized them, they shaded the tomatoes. Now that the weather is frosty, I’ll throw blankets and more row cover over those hoops. As long as the weather holds, I can still harvest tomatoes. Meanwhile, I can’t take off the strips I attached earlier, because the blankets cover them.

I’ve got plenty of fall leaves, too, although most of mine are more crunchy brown instead of orange, yellow, and red. The squash and beans are pretty desiccated by now, and the rest of the garden is only waiting for a really hard freeze to add to the general shabby air.

I’m covered on garden clean-up until after Thanksgiving. If I can think of a way to use the debris as Christmas decoration, I can put it off until after the first of the year.

I’m thinking I can keep my “décor” in place until after Thanksgiving. Then I’ll have to clean up. The squash I’ll dole out to the chickens, and I’ll compost the leaves. Garden litter can harbor disease, and squash bugs overwinter as adults in debris. I’ve already killed a few of them when I moved some plywood.

Hey--they have straw in mangers, don’t they? I think I’m on to something. HB When Teresa Howell isn’t decorating her yard, she teaches English at Great Basin College.

The cornstalks I’ll pile in a corner somewhere. I don’t have a chipper, and cornstalks take a long time to deteriorate in

BOOKREVIEW

is a small paperback book that was republished in 2010, using the same wording and style that prevailed in the early 1900’s. The language and spelling were left in their original state, in an effort to give the full flavor of this classic work. The author believed in the monistic theory of the universe-the theory that matter, mind, consciousness and life are all manifestations of one Substance, one energy Source and that we are part of that Source. Most healing is a result of how we are thinking (both consciously and subconsciously) about the subject, and therefore is a result of what we expect. He gives the example of a story from the Middle Ages, which tells how the bones of a saint, kept in one of the monasteries, were working miracles of healing. On certain days, a great crowd of ailing people gathered to touch the relics, and most that did so were healed. On the eve of one of these occasions, some sacrilegious rascal gained access to the case in which the wonder-working relics were kept and stole the bones; as a result, the fathers were left with nothing to present to the crowds gathering in front of the convent. They decided to keep the matter quiet, so they went to the cellar and dug up the bones of a murderer who had been buried there many years before. They placed these bones in the case, hoping to find the thief soon and return the real relics with no one knowing the difference. But, to the intense astonishment of those in on the secret, the bones of the murderer proved as effective as those of the saint, and the healing went on as before. The conclusion drawn from this story is that all healing is activated by the patient himself, through thoughts, beliefs and expectations.

The Science of Being Well By Wallace D. Wattles

The author explains that getting well doesn’t depend on the adoption of some system or remedy; that people with your identical ailments have been “healed” by all systems and all remedies. The way one thinks about anything is determined by what he/she believes, both consciously and subconsciously, and the action that is taken to follow through on that belief.

Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

Wattles explains that man is a form of (an extension of) Original Substance, and as a result can think original thoughts; and both within and without the human body, those thoughts have controlling or formative power. Therefore to be well, we must form a conception of perfect health, and hold those thoughts as consistently as possible.

W

allace Wattles wrote his best known work, The Science of Getting Rich in 1910. This book followed shortly thereafter. Wattles was a contemporary of other New Thought authors, who were far ahead of their time in realizing that the vibrational frequencies of our thoughts play a large part in attracting what we want, as well as what we don’t want.

He makes a clear distinction between hunger and appetite, regarding personal eating habits. He believes true hunger is something that is earned through activity, while appetite is a learned habit; a habit of time-of-day, a habit of taste (such as sweet or salty foods), a habit of eating out of anxiety, etc. He believes that we need to know the difference between hunger and appetite in order to have a well-functioning, healthy body.

When Rhonda Byrne, the Australian producer of the movie “The Secret,” was suffering from depression in 2004, her daughter gave her a copy of The Science of Getting Rich. Rhonda had never heard of the Law of Attraction, and her research after reading that book led her to Esther and Jerry Hicks, and the vast amount of Law of Attraction work they have published. Rhonda went ahead to produce “The Secret,” which with no advertising whatsoever, went viral and is now well known all over the world.

The author gives additional suggestions regarding daily habits; he emphasizes the importance of being a self-controlling and self-directing person, consciously aware of our body’s signals and our prevailing thoughts. It is fascinating to me that many of the New Thought authors of the early 1900’s were familiar with the ideas of the Law of Attraction, and thought they were important enough to publish. It makes one wonder how these ideas could have been generally forgotten for so many years, since they are so provable.

The Science of Being Well is based on the same principles as Wallace Wattle’s first book (the power of our thoughts), with chapter titles such as “The Principle of Health,” “Use of the Will,” “Hunger and Appetites,” “Breathing,” and “Sleep.” This

Irrational Risk

y grandfather died thirty years ago, but last night I dreamed he called me on the phone. He said that he was living in Las Vegas and that I should come and join him.” At the time of the dream, the dreamer needed to make an important decision in his life. His usual approach to these situations was to be cautious, logical and rational. But the dream was challenging him to take a gamble and listen to his heart instead of his head. His growth required that he take an “irrational risk.”

Taking risks for God means having faith and letting go of your desire to control so that you can honor the promptings of your soul.

risks for God means having faith and letting go of your desire to control so that you can honor the promptings of your soul. To be spiritually alive, you must be something of a gambler. A life without risks, a life where you never “put yourself out there,” is uninspired, and ultimately, boring. It lacks the spark of a life lived for something greater than yourself. Perhaps this is why the addicted gambler will lose his paycheck, his home, and his life savings--not to mention his job, friendships, or marriage--for the chance of “winning it all.” There is a part of all of us that longs, and needs, to live life laying it all on the line. PSYCHOTHERAPY To Help You Find Your Way

To really know and be guided by God in your life, you must be willing to take risks. I’m not talking about slot machines, poker or sports betting. I’m talking about the risk of following your heart and having the courage to do something that feels right, simply because it feels right. For example, you might follow a calling to start your own business, even though the obstacles you face may initially seem daunting. Even turning to your intuition to decide where to have lunch is a healthy form of irrational risk. Taking

ASTROLOGY

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis

Horoscope for Health | December - 2011

T

he month begins between two eclipses. We had a partial eclipse of the Sun on Nov. 25, and now we’re heading for an especially potent total eclipse of the Moon in Gemini on Dec. 10. This won’t be visible from most of North America, but we’ll feel it as an acceleration of time, and polarization in our human encounters. People may seem especially opinionated, and others may exploit ordinary differences in viewpoints to advance their own cause. You don’t have to get caught in the game. Pay attention to what is happening behind the scenes. There is another story entirely, which involves escaping from the conspiracy of fools--the tendency of so many people to make the same mistakes over and over again. Note that Mercury, now retrograde, will station direct in Sagittarius on Dec. 13. Aries (March 20-April 19) Much of the time, people do a fine job helping one another avoid any form of healing process. At other times they agree to support one another’s growth, wellbeing and resolving their pain. I suggest you choose which side of this equation you’re going to encounter in the people around you. That will mean two things: knowing who has the agenda of not getting better, and then choosing your healing partners carefully. What exactly is a healing partner? It’s someone in your life whose primary purpose is to facilitate your process, be they a friend or a practitioner of some kind. It’s a relationship dedicated to improvement of your life on the deepest level. Make up your mind who you want, and choose the people most likely to give you that.

any conclusions. You will know a lot more mid-month when Mercury stations direct and the rest of the facts come out-particularly the ones you had no clue even existed. You will need to be patient, put up with the suspense and make a lot of room for misunderstanding (especially of those who simply do not get where you’re coming from). Arguing your case will only make it worse. People need to figure out certain things for themselves, and they will. Cancer (June 21-July 22) There is plenty about yourself that you don’t know, and it’s likely that you’re going to make some unusual discoveries over the next few weeks. I trust that what you find out will help you make peace with something that has long been a source of confusion and irritation, if only for having made so little sense for so long. I think you’ll be surprised how obvious the truth turned out to be. This may have been something you’ve known for a long time, and if so, that does not reduce its value. Your recognition of what is so, and what it means to you, is what really matters. With this persistent issue out of the way, you will have a lot more energy to invest in a goal or desire that for some reason you have not been able to act on.

Taurus (April 19-May 20) Many artists are hard on themselves, but perfectionism and creative flow are two different things. Sorting out the difference is one of your new long-term projects. Since there’s no such thing as ‘perfect’ you might want to question the value of an ism that’s based on a nonexistent state of being. The alternative would be embracing the idea that your life, and all you create, is work in progress. The breakthrough level is making contact with your motives to create at all. When you get there, you’ll feel the raw power that drives the impulse to shape, design or create the world around you. That corresponds to the drive to shape and create yourself, and this is a passionate impulse. Remember how much you love life. Remember that you were born, and how you are free to influence your environment.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) The lucky break you’re about to get in a career matter has very little to do with luck and lots to do with your devotion to and obsession with preparation. True, it may seem like luck when so many factors begin working in your favor, but consider how long you’ve persisted on this quest and how many times you’ve tried to get it right. As you know, the key to your success actually is in how you conduct your relationships. There would be no point to talent, to knowledge or to experience without a way to share these things with others, and that has been your primary focus. Things have taken a little longer than if you were a professional conqueror, but your success would be nowhere near as meaningful.

Gemini (May 20-June 21) Mercury, your ruling planet, is retrograde in your opposite sign right now, which means that your role in a partnership matter is under special focus. Whatever the situation, whoever seems to be “at fault” and whatever the apparent cause of the current developments, remember: you’re not working with full information at this point. Do not rush to judgment, or come to

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Mars has entered your birth sign, where it will be for the next eight months--a long time for Mars to spend in one sign. There will be many psychological facets to this transit, but the most significant for you is gaining an understanding of one of Virgo’s most famous qualities--self-criticism. If that habit helped you, it would not need so much in the way of critique, but my sense is that it’s outdone its use. Yet you may need to figure this out palpably for yourself. I’m talking about something that is violent rather than evaluative or reflective. That is to say, the thing you need to understand is self-attack, not your ability to reflect honestly on who you are or what you do. While you’re figuring this out, easy does it.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Explore the power of love. That’s the benefit of letting go of fear, which is something that for some reason seems to be happening to you right now. Of course, you might let go of fear right after you feel a bunch of it blow through town, but sometimes that’s how it goes. Let everything that you feel remind you that love is what gets the job done here in the human dimension. Love is what focuses your awareness, and makes you a person worth noticing. It’s what draws people to you, and what ensures that you have the resources you need for a solid life. Contrary to popular belief it’s not hard work--unless that work is done with love. This has always been your career ambition. Now you can let it take over your life.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Events this month will feel like foreshadowing in a novel--little clues and hints of what is developing in your life. The challenge is to notice them when you feel them, and make use of the information. Certain clues you’re getting now will make a lot more sense come next June. The theme is making contact with what I will reluctantly call your higher purpose. This may not be a particular activity, but rather a sense of contact with the ‘real you’ that has an otherworldly quality. This is a beautiful feeling when you notice it, and though it’s not necessarily coming in at full-energy right now, you’re getting a taste of the energy--which might feel like the sensation of being absolutely sure you belong on the planet at this moment.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) You are going through some kind of transition that’s calling you into the public eye. I suggest you embrace this willingly. You don’t need to be a star or even an extrovert to have a presence in the world. And you don’t need to do much asserting yourself to have a presence in the world. You merely need to get out of the house and be present where you are. Do yourself a favor and stay about five drinks behind the crowd. You need your full faculties available, and you need to be conscious what you say to whom. I’m not suggesting you be quiet, but rather that you focus on the conversation you’re in with some precision. Let your presence speak more than your words--and remember that your presence is more like a laser than a flashlight.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) The key to your success right now is not being afraid to be unpopular, while not doing anything special that would make you be that way. You have to assert your will and your intentions in a delicate environment. Now, it always seems that way, and part of what you’re learning is diplomacy. But this is a special case. It takes integrity to assert your will or your viewpoint in the face of those who might have some other position, but it’s vital that you not let those other viewpoints deter you. This is a matter of integrity, and that is the way to proceed. Know all sides of the issues involved. Be prepared with the facts. And remember that people are more likely to respond to your emotional tenor than the information you present. Be correct, and be mellow about it.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) This is the moment to take some territory in your professional life, which is another way of saying making an impression on the world with your talent. This has already begun to happen over the past few weeks; things you did that barely seemed to get noticed in the past are now finally getting attention. Here’s the thing, as my old therapist Joe Trusso likes to remind people, don’t judge your performance. Just do what you do, and go onto the next thing. I would add that you have no way of knowing just how many people, or who in particular, your work is influencing. That means the imperative has to be on quality. Tune your instrument every time you play. Keep your focus, project yourself clearly and know your song well before you start singing. HB

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) Be mindful of the effects you have on others. And be mindful that the effects you seem to have may not all be coming from you. That said, I suggest you be especially observant, especially for all the things that go unsaid in human affairs. You don’t know what people are thinking about you when the lights are off and they’re under the covers. But there will be clues: the particular look in someone’s eyes, the tone of their voice, the way they influence a conversation to help you feel good about yourself. Don’t take any of this for granted, or take it casually. There are people who truly care about you, and at least one of them is making his or her presence known in ways that will be too subtle for most mortals to appreciate.

KIDSCORNER Written By Ariana Purcell

“Many articles are really great – I just love it!” –Marie Brethauer

ello fellow readers. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and are getting ready for another fabulous holiday! Can you believe that the New Year is almost here?

“Every month I can hardly put your magazine down; your articles are both lively and informative... Thanks very much forgiving something to look forward to each month.” –Kathrin Wilson, M.S. Kinesiology

Last month, we looked at paradigms and principles from the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, by Sean Covey. Since the New Year is coming up, make a promise to yourself to follow your principles, and do better in something you are not doing so well in thus far. For example, my science grade dropped a little over the past few weeks, and I plan on getting my grade up again!

“Being affiliated with HB magazine has been a consistently positive experience. The topics for the articles that I am asked to write and we collaborate on are stimulating and meaningful, and especially important in these difficult times. I feel more like I am an active contributor of bringing health and well-being to my community. The feedback that I receive from clients and friends is positive, and new clients call each month as a result of reading my articles and seeing my ad. The staff at HB works with me with true team spirit. Dawn has a solid business background and approaches her job with utmost in professionalism, as do the rest of the staff. For me, being a contributor to HB is a significantly positive reflection on my writing and my therapy practice.” –Terry Lowey, M.F.T.

The next chapter of this book is called “The Personal Bank Account.” The author begins this chapter by telling a true story, which leads into the main point of the chapter, “all changes begin with you,” and “how you feel about yourself is like a personal bank account (PBA),” he states. The “deposits” are like being honest, keeping promises to yourself, tapping into your talents, etc. The “withdrawals” are breaking promises, being dishonest, doing something you know is wrong to do, etc. As the chapter goes on, he explains how to maintain constant deposits into your PBA, by taking baby steps in the following areas: 1. Keep promises to yourself. 2. Do random acts of service. 3. Tap into your talent. 4. Be gentle to yourself. 5. Renew yourself.

“HB Magazine is a great source for everyday healthy living. The first time I opened HB, I found something I could use to make my daily life healthier. Just last month, I learn about posture (I have since taped the article to my desk). I really enjoy reading a magazine that doesn’t tell me how I need to buy more expensive clothes, wear more makeup and be very skinny. HB allows me to open a magazine and learn how to feel better about myself! To top it off, HB is local-- and I love that!” - Mary Dini, Sage Ridge School

6. Be honest. The coming holidays will hopefully provide you enough free time to work on each step, one at a time. HB

Good luck, have fun and Merry Christmas!

As we mix & mingle throughout the holiday season,

our pets often join us for the joy ride. Is it just as hard for them to create a “jingling” beat with their four-legged friends?

D

ogs & Dogs

Aggression between dogs can stem from many things. Scent, fear, toys, food, owners, etc...the first step in helping your pet become less aggressive is to understand why they are acting the way they do. If your dog is not well-trained, aggression can lead to many problems. Make sure that your dog is trained and socialized well from the beginning to avoid possible fights and injuries. Take your dog to a behavior specialist if the aggression is not towards just one but all dogs. This could be a signal that there is something wrong with your pet. If there is only one dog that your pup can’t stand, avoid taking him near that animal. It could be the scent of the other animal that makes your dog fear it or think it’s an enemy. Cats & Cats Much like dogs, there are many reasons why cats are overly aggressive towards other cats. Some owners think that two females are less likely to fight than males, however this is not true. Both male and female cats fight about territory, which they mark with their pheromones. Both sexes give off pheromones in their feces and natural odor, male cats also spray urine to mark their territory. To prevent fighting, it’s possible to mask the scent with products like Feliway, a pheromone-based formula that duplicates the scent of a cat’s natural scent glands.

Dogs & Cats “Fighting like cats and dogs” isn’t just an expression, it’s a true fact! As mentioned earlier, cats do not like having other animals or pets in their territory, despite being naturally curious (hence the term “curious as a cat”). If a new dog enters their territory, they’re likely to get into a fight unless the cat is docile and laid back. In this case it may be necessary to keep the dog separated from the cat’s space to prevent fighting.

Dealing with Pet Aggression Aggression among pets can be dangerous as they can pose risks to you and your family members. Whether the aggression stems from food or territory, you the owner must take the initiative to make sure your pet and family are safe. Here are some guidelines to help make your home a hospitable place for everyone.

1. Don’t punish: it is strongly recommended to never punish your dog as their aggression often originates from fear. Territorial, possessive, or protective aggression responded with punishment leads to defensive aggression. 2. Medical causes: check with your veterinarian for medically caused aggression. 3. Specialists: animal behavior specialists are professionals that offer hands-on help dealing with aggressive pets. 4. Precautions: if you cannot bring your dog to a behavior specialist, use methods to keep those within contact of your pet safe. Cage-type muzzles can be used if your pet needs to go out in public. Bear in mind that some dogs are intelligent enough to remove a muzzle on their own.

5. Aggression catalysts: avoid situations where your dog is likely to become aggressive. Keeping your dog in a safe room and limiting contact with people is advised.

6. Spaying/neutering: intact dogs are more likely to show aggressive dominant, territorial and protective behavior. If there’s doubt in your mind dealing with your pet’s aggressive behavior, consult a professional immediately. A pet should never become a nuisance; a pet should make your home a better place. The tables filled up, but the food and coffee were constantly replenished. After breakfast, the first speaker was scheduled to begin at 8:45 am. Dr. Amy Vail, Psy. D, spoke about a “mindful life.” She asked us to think about how we are not true to ourselves; and to find the things that distract us in our daily lives. These are elements of destruction, in regards to our personal foundation. She went on to discuss how you can find power within yourself by taking responsibility for your life, 100 percent of the time. Let go of the past and stop blaming. Moving forward, ask “what” questions, in order to find answers, instead of using “why” questions, which typically produce defensive excuses.

healthy aging, throughout the decades. She provided a list of potential supplements to aid in nourishing a woman’s aging body. Last, but not least, Dinny Evans spoke on finding a spiritual path to physical well-being. She demonstrated her point through a worksheet she provided on “Radical Forgiveness.” It is the idea that nothing happens “to” you, but rather “for” you. It’s letting go of fear, and changing your mindset. If you can forgive, you will not forget, but rather empower yourself with the knowledge you gain from this process. At that point, the negative cycles end and your life can move in a happier and healthier direction. It was the perfect ending to our day. It was uplifting and spiritually moving.

“Love begins with really showing up and being present,” Dr. Vail said. She believes that if we all “turn up the light” within ourselves, we can change the world, as “one candle can light up other candles, without dimming its own light.” Dr. Vail was enthusiastic, funny and kept us engaged. It was a great starting point for the conference, as she helped create excitement and energy among the audience. From that point forward, the conference continued to impress me. There were speakers each hour, all covering topics concerning their expertise.

Some of us made our way to the social event, where we noshed on cheese, crackers and fruit, and drank our antioxidant-filled red wine. We were also able to meet with vendors, along with some of the speakers from the day. The Ki Gong instructor, Dr. Tim Schroeder, DC, offered his children’s book, “The Legend of Eagle Rock,” an inspirational book for all. My children now have a copy.

Oncologist Ahrin Koppel spoke about prevention and the advancement of breast health. Naturopath Stephanie Riley spoke on supporting your immune system, highlighting the importance of G.I. tract health. From there, attendees were able to choose a class, including astrology and health, Zumba and Ki Gong. Again, the lunch Granlibakken provided was well-rounded and nourishing. As we ate, we received a presentation from Jill Whisler, a registered dietician. She covered weight topics, and using nutrition to heal, as well as nourish the body. She challenged us to look at how we are eating, and why we eat the way we do. It’s truly astonishing to think that most of us do not even ingest one “whole” food a day, meaning an apple or carrots, something that is not processed.

It was off to bed at a reasonable time, as the next day began in the same fashion. Pilates, if you chose to attend, breakfast and then the first speaker of the day: Robert Ayers, Financial Consultant and Astrologer. He spoke on financially surviving in the tough economic times we are currently facing, and will face for years to come. The topic seemed heavy at 9 am, but I was on the edge of my seat during his entire talk. He did not have fancy, digitized accompaniments during his presentation, however it was not needed. The content was powerful and easily driven

After lunch, Carolyn Willette, RN, discussed heart disease, the number one killer among women. We heard from Naturopath Christina Campbell, ND, as she talked about empowering

home with his silver-tongued speech. One of his main points, “preservation of capital,” made perfect sense. We, individually and collectively, need to get back to the basics, and preserve what we already have. We need to look at life from a creative perspective and reposition ourselves, aligning with our true purpose in life. After Mr. Ayers, we listened to Dr. Gregory Tirdel, MD, a local sleep specialist. He was funny and captivating, and talked about the many facets of insomnia. “It’s not about the pill,” Dr. Tirdel stated many times. I found hope in his statement, as not all western-educated medical doctors use the same mantra. From there, we heard from Carla McClure, L.Ac, on the cycle systems within our bodies, from a Traditional Chinese Medical perspective. It was interesting and informative; she provided an abundance of references. The last speaker of the day, and of the conference, was Dr. Lily Kuehne, DC. She spoke on Vitality, and how to achieve it.

Our day ended with a health fair, filled with information, products and fitness classes. I had a quick session of acupuncture and spoke to several speakers from our conference. Although I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the conference, and where it was held, I was ready to bring my weekend to an end. Even though my body relaxed, my brain needed to download, and then rest.

I am so grateful to have attended this event. It was well worth the drive, time and effort needed to plan this trip. Although I am well-versed in the healthy lifestyle niche, I gained knowledge and good connections through this event. It is definitely on my to-do list for next year! *Special thanks to Granlibakken: we truly appreciate your invitation, and being involved in a wonderful event.
