BRAIN HEALTH

How Many Books Can You Read in a Week? By Erin Weisz

O

eight books that week. In 2012, she tried the method on 5th graders with similar results; the students read five books that week and ever since, have asked their teacher for more library time. Clearly, the method works, and that’s what counts when it comes to reading.

ne of the first tasks a child has to master in school is reading. And the sad news is that reading is a national crisis and many children aren’t doing too well in this category. Statistics from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) reveal that 44 percent of 4th graders in America cannot read fluently. Worse than that, 44 million adults in the U.S. can’t read well enough to read a simple story to a child. With many reading programs out on the market, there’s a lot to consider but one program — a book — caught my eye called How to Read 5 Books in a Week, written by Dr. Donna Schwontkowski, published by Million Dollar Memory. This method is quite unusual in that it takes into consideration how the brain processes information as well as how we remember information. Isn’t that what every child needs?

The method is very specific as to how to read five books in a week and you’ll want to follow it to the letter. She also gives students a quick guide on how to write a book report and then also how to give an oral report on a book; two additional skills that would benefit any young child.

For example, since we recall information better in pictures than in words, it would be better to convert what’s being read in pictures first before tackling big textbooks on a topic. How do you do this? According to Dr. Schwontkowski, you start out with books that make this process easy. This way you don’t struggle against yourself and learning becomes effortless.

Statistics from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) reveal that 44 percent of 4th graders in America cannot read fluently.

Her method isn’t just based on some hypothesis either. As a memory expert for over 10 years, Dr. Schwontkowski taught thousands of postgraduate students how to learn large amounts of information — a half semester’s worth — in three to six hours. From this experience, she created strategies to help students read difficult science textbooks fast. The results of that experience became the foundation for this book. In 2010, she tested the method on a Sacramento class of 4th graders. The children loved the method and read

How to Read 5 Books in a Week will greatly benefit grade school and high school students alike. A child who can read fast is a child who gets his homework done faster and if she continues the reading habit, will be successful in business. That’s what the studies predict. In fact, if you’re an adult who never really mastered the reading habit, don’t think twice. Get this book and you’ll be reading five books by the end of this week, wondering why you didn’t learn the method sooner. For more information, see www. WhoWasThatPresident.com/ howtoread5books.html. Getting Tested for Celiac, Gluten Intolerance, Gluten Sensitivity or Gluten Allergy: A Brief Analysis By Melanie Weir luten free as a trend is helpful for increasing availability of foods to individuals on a once extremely restrictive diet, but getting diagnosed with celiac, gluten intolerance or gluten allergies is becoming increasing difficult in 2013. 1. Medical practitioners are viewing “Gluten Free’ as a new ‘Low Carb’ trend. 2. Specialists are telling patients to go gluten free (just try it out) before getting tested for celiac. 3. With 310 symptoms associated with Celiac Disease, patients with non-classic symptoms are often not tested: distended belly, diarrhea or constipation. 4. People are getting false information regarding how to be tested for Celiac Disease, Gluten Intolerance, Gluten Sensitivity & Gluten Allergies. 5. Many practitioners do not understand the differences between Celiac Disease, Gluten Intolerance, Gluten Sensitivity & Gluten Allergies. 6. People are often told that they do not need a gluten free diet due to an IGA test coming up negative, but this is not always true.

G

Back in 2001, I learned that there was a disease called Celiac and I had a lot of the symptoms. In 2002, a dietitian took me off gluten for 6 weeks and the results were miraculous. My skin stopped itching and I didn’t feel like I was exhausted, I didn’t feel like I was going to be sick when I finished meals and the brain fog I was under for years was drifting away. I was then instructed by my GI doctor to eat gluten for 2 weeks and was then tested for IGA only antibodies and sent in for a biopsy. Six years later, I learned that Celiac Disease runs in my family. I also learned that I was not properly tested for Celiac and that as of yet, the only way I can currently get tested is if I consume at least one slice of bread and one cookie everyday for at least 6 months. A test can be run at 3 months, but generally it takes 6 months for accuracy. Before You Are Tested for Celiac: • Do not change your diet, continue eating gluten. • Choose a competent lab to process your tests, familiarity with reading celiac tests accurately is a must. 6

• Know which tests you need to have run insurance companies tend to discourage all tests from being run as a cost reduction technique. • Understand that some tests are not accurate if you have auto-immune disease or if you are under 7 years of age. • Know that the Celiac tests do not test for gluten allergy, gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity. If celiac tests run negative, other tests can still be performed. Stage 1 of Celiac Diagnosis: • A Genetic Test must be run for the HLA fingerprint for both Celiac Genes – HLA-DQ2 & HLA-DQ8 • A Celiac Antibody Assay Panel must be run, which should include all of the following: tTG – both IgA & IgG, EmA, ARA, AGA – IgG & IgA • Most clinics run a total Serum IgA which should include: • Anti-gliadin ELISA, IgA specific (AGA-IgA) and Anti-gliadin ELISA • Anti-human tissue transglutaminase (Hu-tTG) ELISA, IgA Recombinant antigen • Anti-endomysial (EMA) antibody by Immunofluorescence Assay • Endoscopy – biopsy of villi (make sure your surgeon has experience taking celiac biopsy – it generally takes 12-18 months of training for accuracy) Stage 2 of Celiac Diagnosis: • You must have one of the HLA fingerprint gene’s to have Celiac Disease. However, as of early 2000, 25-30% of people who do have the gene, don’t have Celiac Disease*. Positive Antibody Results: • Raised IgA antibodies indicate short term immune response. • Raised IgG antibodies demonstrate long term immune response. • Negative antibody tests (for both IgA & IgG) can be interpreted negative only if individual has consumed gluten regularly for 3-6 months. • Alternative Test Result & Diagnosis • It’s important to note not all Celiacs will have positive antibody results. • IgA deficiency (exists in 1 out of 500-700 healthy blood donors). • Serological test can be a false negative and if this is suspected an alternative serologic test can be conducted.

• Celiac Diagnosis 4 out of 5 can also be done from a positive: • Villi biopsy • Genetic test • Symptoms associated with Gluten Free Diet • Symptoms go away with implementation of strict gluten free diet • Negatives to villi biopsy & serological test could mean individual does not have active celiac disease. If the genetic test is positive, individual should continue serological testing into the future. The next stage of testing: Allergies (IgG & IgE) – an immunologist can give you more information. Symptoms can be from gluten or potentially other food proteins. Gluten Intolerance – Antibody test can be run: IgA antibody (AGA), anti-tissue transglutaminase antibody (ATTA), and anti-endomysial antibody (EMA). Positive results + reduction or elimination of gluten related symptoms = need for adherence to a strict gluten free diet. Gluten Sensitivity – Diagnosed using a gluten elimination test. The black box of gluten reactions. If you eat gluten and it makes you sick, don’t eat it. If you can handle a little gluten, then only eat a little bit of it. This diagnosis can only be given if the celiac, gluten intolerance & allergy tests have negative results after consuming gluten for 3-6 months (1 slice of bread and a cookie – 3 to 6 months depending on which resource you observe). EDITOR’S NOTES

I

f you’ve been faithfully working out for months and still have aches and body pains, it may be because your muscles are imbalanced. That’s what we discovered from Patrick Mummy, founder of the Symmetry for Health method featured in our cover story on page 18 to 19.

Patrick has worked with athletes of all ages, people with disabilities, and those scheduled for joint replacement surgeries. He has found that by thinking and evaluating the body in three dimensions, and recommending a set of minimal exercises every few weeks, muscle balance in the body can be altered quite

dramatically. This affects posture, pain levels, and the ability to move more freely. Check out the story now — his service could be the missing link in your athletic endeavors or what you’ll need to recover faster from that upcoming joint replacement surgery. If you have a brace that needs refitting, working on muscle balance progressively could be the most important factor in reducing your disability. It’s a fascinating story and fascinating work that will easily become well known — and it’s happening right here in our vicinity. Happy reading! Dr. Donna, Editor

A Simple Solution That Can Resolve Chronic Pain

D

id you know that most chronic pain is due to a loss of tensegrity?

Tensegrity is a term that is used to describe a condition where the human body has a perfect mix of strength, flexibility, and stability due to balanced tension within the soft tissues of the body. This allows for unrestricted and painless freedom of movement with an abundance of energy. I think most will agree that this would be a state of wellness. However, accidents, injuries, bad postural habits, bad sleeping habits, and repetitive stress from the activities at work and daily living can change this state of well being over time. Unfortunately, many people suffer daily from constant pain and restriction of movement. Activities are not very enjoyable to them anymore because the activities increase their pain. This prevents people from doing what they love to do which decreases the quality of their life.

By restoring the human body’s tensegrity much of this pain and restricted movement can be eliminated. A person can truly get their life back! Tensegrity is the balanced tension of muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia which helps splint all the joints of the body. The balance protects the joints from compression forces encountered with everyday movement within the gravitational field. Tensegrity keeps the spine in alignment and protects the discs from these detrimental forces that over time will cause degenerative changes. Misalignment of the spine combined with degeneration of the joints is usually the cause of painful restricted movement and low energy. Furthermore, blood and nerve flow will be optimized to every tissue cell of the human body when this balance is restored. QSM3 is a technique that restores tensegrity back to the human body. By looking at the posture and taking several measurements, the doctor can figure out if a person is having pain because of a loss of tensegrity. Then with a very gentle non-invasive treatment, the restoration process can begin to bring the body back into its natural state of tensegrity. This ultimately leads to a great deal of pain relief and can really allow the body to start healing from chronic conditions that have never responded to any other treatment. For a free consultation and examination with the doctor to see if you are a good candidate for this treatment, please call our office at (916) 965-7155. H&F

Lower Extremity Pain Relief A By Dr. Tracy L. Basso, D.P.M, F.A.C.F.A.S, Certified American Board of Podiatric Surgery

Sometimes, however, we see customers suffering with foot pain who have very real undiagnosed issues that cannot be completely relieved by conventional means or a better fitting shoe. These sufferers need not only the right footwear but they need additional consultation by a specialized doctor who is familiar with their problem. Occasionally these cases require surgery by a surgeon that has had advanced training in not only how to diagnose the problem but how to surgically correct the problem. “Stabbing pain that made me feel like I was walking on broken glass.” That’s how Terri Embry describes how her feet felt at the end of every work day. “I was miserable.” For two years, Terri sought an accurate diagnosis and treatment that would allow her to continue working and enjoying life with her new husband. “At one point, I was told that nothing could be done, and I needed to quit my job because I was too disabled,” she relates. “I’m only forty-nine, and that was unacceptable.” She describes her first consultation with Dr. Tracy Basso, “He pressed one spot on my leg, and I felt the pain surge down into my foot. He immediately diagnosed entrapped nerves in both legs and said he had advanced surgical training could relieve my debilitating pain.”

Dr. Basso also evaluates non diabetic patients with foot pain and related symptoms caused by other medical conditions or trauma to determine if nerve decompression surgery is a viable option for their pain relief. Not all nerve pain suffers are diabetic. “For me, it was a miracle.” Mardel Fuller says she was in, “Extreme, constant foot pain,” after she suffered shingles—a side effect of her chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. “No one, including the doctors at the pain clinic could do anything for me except to prescribe heavy pain medication. I am so fortunate that my podiatrist took an interest and referred me to Dr. Basso. After nerve surgery, the pain was completely gone. For me, it was a miracle. Dr. Basso gave me my life back.” Dr. Basso evaluates patients with foot pain and any other foot related problems in his Davis medical practice office. After the surgery for her right foot, she says, “I was shocked. The strength in my foot and leg came back immediately, and the pain was gone. I will have my left one done soon. No one I have spoken to has ever heard of this surgery, but I hope many who need it find out!” “Being able to offer achievable pain relief through nerve decompression surgery to my patients and my colleagues patients has been a game-changer for me,” says Dr. Basso. “My commitment to podiatric medicine has taken on new heights, and I am grateful everyday for the improved pain free quality of life I can bring people.”

Sacramento 5th Graders Become Experts on Presidents and Presidents’ Pets By Erin Weisz he brain is a muscle; if we don’t use it, we’ll lose it. And local fifth graders at Two Rivers Elementary School, confident now that their brains are big muscles, are celebrating their recent achievement of mastering all 44 Presidents – and the 350+ Presidents’ Pets.

T

The 5th grade class teacher, Mrs. Courtnay Kaump, collaborated with Dr. Donna of Million Dollar Memory of Sacramento to teach the students how to master learning large amounts of information in the Who Was That President? Program. The program addressed how to read five books in a week, face recognition of the Presidents, how to memorize lists and 1000+ facts, the pets of the Presidents, and how to tell cool stories about the Presidents and their pets. The students’ first lesson began on Sept. 16th and ended with testing right before the big Election 2012. Local media covered the story and the children made the Top Story of the Day on Fox News on Jan. 18th. Here are some of the students’ comments: Megan Houang “I really love the President’s program. I thought it was really fun and interesting. I learned a lot about the Presidents that most people don’t know about like for example Ulysses S Grant used to smoke 20 cigars a day.” Fabian Ruiz, Jr. “It is amazing.” Ryan Montano “I think it is very cool, interesting and funny, mostly very interesting. I love the speed drawings.” Aileen Aburto “…cool speed drawings” Mikaila Martinez “… it’s really important to learn about the Presidents because it’s our history. I’m grateful to have learned it.” Sean Schneeberg “The way Dr. Donna taught me to memorize all the presidents by one little picture or drawing really helps me practice. It helps me memorize stuff a lot easier.”

Jaylah Davis “One of the benefits I have had during this program is face recognition. I have learned that there are a lot of ways you can tell people apart….has definitely made history more fun.” Maddy Clemons “This program will help me memorize more things for the rest of my life. It was a great thing to do.” Krishna Sun “…really fun and fascinating… helped me memorize lots of tough questions and the situations that each President faced. It taught me the faces, wives and children of the presidents too.” Frankie Colby “I would definitely not know as much as I know now if it weren’t for this program. I thought the way she taught was really cool. We would always look forward to seeing new speed drawings and pictures and the new (and interesting) facts she put in them. Overall this was a really cool experience and I hope other people get to experience it, too.” Students are not the only ones who love the Who Was That President? Program. Parents, teachers, and the community can really embrace this program. One part of it teaches children to recognize and memorize facial features instantly. This part of the program is not only a brain exercise that promotes a better memory, but it also produces great face recognition skills that can be used in case of an emergency or during a crucial time where remembering what someone looks like is imperative. And using the faces of Presidents is a fun way to acquire facial recognition skills. The program also helps teach children about presidential history and learn all presidents quickly. With so many benefits, this exciting program is one that will engage students and teachers. This program really teaches children to recognize and remember. e are energetic beings and everything in life, including our thoughts, feelings and emotions are forms of energy vibrating at different levels.

Sticking with that line of reasoning, our thought and emotions are powerful transmitters and receivers, and we are, at an unconscious level, transmitting and receiving energy all of the time. Negative energy that someone sends with the unconscious intention to inflict harm on you, your life or your family, is a form of psychic attack. This negative energy is usually sent in thought form, but it can be sent in sly verbal “zingers” or sarcastic remarks masked in humor or some form of “helping”. Most often the negative energy you are feeling directed your way has its roots in the other person’s jealousy or lack of self esteem. The perpetrators are usually totally unaware because they are not in touch with their own feelings and emotions. Instead they are trying to bring you down to their low level and drain your life force energy. You know the old saying, “misery loves company”? In psychic terms, these people are referred to as ‘Psychic Vampires’. Borrowing from other writers, bloggers and lectures, I have found a commonality of agreement regarding the symptoms attributed to the terms referred to as Psychic and Psychic Vampire. I have included “some” of the most common symptoms that are discussed. Traits of a Psychic Vampire: • feelings of abandonment or rejection • needs constant reassurance • never feels satisfied • seeks nurturing • low energy-fatigue • constantly complaining (about everything and everyone)

Each of us has psychic-vampire tendencies that sometimes need to be brought into check. The number one way to avoid psychic attack, and, avoid being a psychic vampire, is to get to know your own feelings and be honest with yourself. Pay attention to how you are feeling. Accept responsibility for your own feelings and don’t blame anyone else for the way you are feeling.

You can choose how you feel about everything, everyone and every situation. Knowing yourself will empower you to walk away from people and circumstances that drain your energy. Symptoms of Psychic Attack: • dizziness • loss of energy • muscle tension • mental confusion • headaches • chronic fatigue • sleep disturbances • irritability • depressed mood • physical illness One way to become aware of psychic attacks is by checking in with yourself about the effects of your interactions with people and circumstances. If you have been talking to someone on the telephone and you suddenly feel irritable, drained, sad, question yourself. Why am I irritable, drained or sad? If you go to a meeting and are feeling uncomfortable, check in with yourself again. Don’t waste your time

ruminating about your attacker(s), or grumbling about the situation. Every time your attacker comes into your mind, imagine you are showering them with love, and shower yourself with the same love. The most important way to protect your self from the effect of psychic attack is to be emotionally strong and stable. Try to identify your own emotional issues and fears, and heal them. In doing this, you will be less vulnerable and less likely to absorb the negative energy of others. And, lastly the key to all healing is forgiveness. Forgive those who may be sending undesired energy your way, and most importantly, forgive yourself. H&F

Organic Gardening Without the Work By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski

idn’t you love those spring days this February here in Sacramento? Did the nice weather make you think about being in the garden once again? Have you already started to sprout seeds so they’ll be ready for transplanting in the next 45-60 days? We tracked down Amy McCoy, a Citrus Heights gardener looked up to for her wise woman knowledge about plant growing, who happens to have a method of gardening that fits our idea of how a garden should be. That is, a garden that meets these requirements: 1. Produces a wonderful yield so neighbors and extended family can benefit, too 2. Very little weeding 3. Very little watering 4. No bugs eating the crops 5. Very little tilling if any (too much work) 6. Beautiful produce 7. High nutrient produce 8. No expensive soil amendments from gardening stores like compost, compost tea, sulfur, and fertilizer 9. Organic and chemical / pesticide free 10. Non-GMO seeds 11. Minimal time investment so we can live our lives freely 12. S aves money on gardening and food costs

Weight Loss with 50 Years of Positive Proven Results By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret.)

W

hen you want to lose weight, do you choose the latest fad diet and research it? Or do you check with your friends to see what they’re doing? There is another way to make your decision: base it on a diet with research to back it. The hCG diet was developed by an endocrinologist, Dr. A.T.W. Simeons in Rome, Italy. On a trip to India, he found doctors administering hCG to overweight patients who had large hips, buttocks and thighs. The small daily doses of hCG eliminated their ravenous appetites and abnormal fat deposits, too. HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin, a natural hormone produced during pregnancy produced by the embryo and placenta in amounts as much as one million IU per day. During pregnancy, a woman won’t become obese or form abnormal fat unless she is eating a diet high in sugars and bad fats. Different Types of Fat in the Body Dr. Simeons then discovered that a 500-calorie diet in conjunction with a small dose of hCG (125-150 IU per day) was enough to create weight loss of one pound a day in many patients. There are three types of fat in the body: Structural Fat, which surrounds your organs and does not make you fat

Normal Fat, the type used to fuel your body and does not make you fat Abnormal Fat, the type that does make you fat and accumulates on your arms, stomach, buttocks, face, hips and everywhere else you don’t want fat. Dr. Simeons found that his hCG diet went right after the abnormal fat in the body, preserving the normal and structural fat while maintaining the tautness of the skin. HCG works on the hypothalamus to release abnormal fat stores. When someone who is overweight diets by fasting, they lose normal fat and then structural fat before the abnormal fat is touched. They end up looking drawn and haggard and their abnormal fat deposits don’t change much. It’s frustrating to have all one’s efforts result in such a tragedy. HCG Clinic in Woodland Can Help You Eliminate Abnormal Fat Here in the Sacramento area, there is a Medical Weight Loss Clinic called New Beginnings that works with clients who want to use the hCG diet. HCG Clinic Director, Kristi Seiber’s struggle with weight loss as a flight attendant led her to the final realization that the only diet she ever needed again was the hCG diet.

The clinic is stellar in their explanation of the diet, attention to details, administration of the hCG, and great customer service lasting pain relief through postural alignment in those moments where someone feels the need to cheat. Weight Loss Success Practically Guaranteed The New Beginnings Clinic has files full of people who successfully lost their weight goal over one or two cycles. The program is even recommended by Dr. Oz. The diet is either a 23-day or 40-day cycle, followed by a maintenance period without hCG for six weeks to allow the hypothalamus to reset the metabolism. Firsthand, I found the diet easy to follow and had no cravings. You can opt for either hCG injections (very small needles) or oral pills. The best results for me were the elimination of stubborn abnormal fat deposits. Watching the scale skip numbers on the way down was motivating and for every pound, I lost an inch. My BMI has gone into the normal zone and my blood pressure became normal after the first 8-pound loss. We always learn something on a diet, and hopefully it’s something good that can give long-lasting benefits. More important than the weight loss for me was realizing it was stress causing me to gain weight and this needs to be addressed for longterm success. I am motivated to never let my weight go back to where it was before. The New Beginnings Clinic even offers a coupon of $150 off of the 40-day program to get you ready for summer, and there is a way for those who live out of town and still want to benefit from the program via telephone and email/texting support. An initial visit to the office for a physical is required so when your mom or sister are visiting you on vacation, an appointment will get you started. So if you, your mother and sister all decide to choose the only diet that truly is backed by research to lose weight simultaneously, let them know about this. Environmental Diseases: How to Prevent Lead Poisoning

M

Prevalence of Lead Poisoning The most common source of lead poisoning is lead paint, which was used in nearly all homes built before 1978. The EPA further estimates that close to 75% of occupied residential housing built before 1980 used lead. In most cases, older lead paint has been painted over with latex or oil paint with no lead in it, but remains in the house. In many cases, there are surfaces in the home where lead paint remains uncovered and unrecognized, inside cabinets or closets, for instance.

erodes and wears away, sometimes chipping and peeling. The big chips and peels are only the most obvious sign of deterioration. Tiny flakes and paint dust get stirred up in the air where children can breathe them in. The dust - almost imperceptible settles on the floor and other surfaces where it gets on children’s hands and clothing, and from there, onto their toys and into their mouths.

2. Wipe down painted surfaces regularly with a damp cloth to pick up any lead dust and avoid disturbing it.

Lead in the Water Children may also ingest lead in the water if a house has older plumbing with lead fittings, or from toys imported from countries with lower lead

4. If a nearby house is being demolished, keep windows closed and wipe down surfaces regularly. There’s a good possibility that dust from the demolition contains lead. 5. Avoid buying painted toys, crayons and clay that were imported from another country. If your child is diagnosed with lead poisoning and you have reason to believe that your landlord or management company were negligent, contact an attorney to discuss your options for bringing suit to get compensation for your child’s medical difficulties and needs.

The environmental protection agency estimates that one in six children in the U.S. has lead levels elevated enough to cause some degree of physical impairment or damage. The damage due to lead poisoning includes shortened attention span, impaired hearing, liver and kidney damage, poor perceptual integration, neurological damage and poor classroom behavior.

Learn more about Lead Toxicity Symptoms from a leading expert in Forensic Toxicology by visiting http://www.environmentaldiseases.com/articlelead-toxicity.html. The site is on Environmental Diseases. Editor’s Note: You can also absorb lead from sandblasting paint. Over the years, I’ve seen patients with high lead levels from doing exactly this. Their paper mask did not protect them. A hair analysis helps detect high lead levels. For more info on this, contact me at DrDonna@fastermac.net. H&F

It’s not just eating paint chips. There’s a common perception – or mis-perception – of the typical child who gets lead poisoning. He’s from a poor family, with parents who don’t watch carefully enough to notice that their child is picking up chips of paint off the floor and eating them. Or who is allowed to gnaw on a windowsill by parents too busy to move the child away. People may assume that the house must be dirty; it could never happen in a home where the floors are kept clean and there is no dust. It’s comforting to believe that. It means that lead poisoning won’t happen to our children if we just keep the house clean enough, and a close enough eye on the children. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. It’s not just eating paint chips that can cause lead poisoning. In fact, chances are that few of the children diagnosed with lead poisoning ever picked up a piece of peeling paint and deliberately ate it. Paint

3. Report any peeling, flaking or worn paint in your apartment to your landlord as soon as you notice it. It is the responsibility of the landlord to keep the property in good repair.

By Scott J. Alexander ost people have a basic understanding of lead poisoning. They know that it is caused by ingesting lead. They know enough not to let their children chew on paint chips, just in case. Some may know that older neighborhoods and older homes may have lead seals on the water pipes, and that could cause lead poisoning. The facts about lead poisoning can, and should be, frightening.

HEALTH

Don’t Be Sad if You Have SAD By Erin Weisz inter is almost over and many people are tired of the colder, rainier weather, shorter and darker days. For them, winter is the time of the year to feel depressed and less energized. If you feel your spirit and energy falling away from you this time of the year, you may have a mild case of seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

W

According to familydoctor.org, up to 6 percent of people suffer from SAD (an appropriate acronym), which may not seem like many people, but up to 20 percent of people may experience a mild form of SAD in the winter months, and women are more susceptible than men. SAD is said to be caused by a combination of low light levels along with slight differences in brain chemistry and hormones. Researchers think that reduced sunlight during fall and winter leads to reduced production of serotonin in the brain. Since serotonin is a neurotransmitter that produces a calming affect, a lack of it leads to depression, fatigue, cravings of carbs, and weight gain. According to nutritionist, Ariane Hundt who lives in New York and works with many sufferers of SAD, it is important for those who become more depressed or fatigue in winter to eat foods that energize and produce a balanced blood sugar level, such as protein and vegetables paired at every meal. A meal like turkey breast and cauliflower will balance a person’s blood sugar for about 3-4 hours, whereas foods heavy in starches or sugars will only do so for 1-2 hours at most and will result in sugar cravings and fatigue. Foods that are warming are also great, such as healthy soups, stews, and steamed veggies. Hundt also recommends hot chocolate mixes with reduced 16

sugar and hot teas that can boost one’s mood, improve digestion and increase alertness. Hundt also warns that most people with SAD feel the need to sleep more and more, and says that the more sleep a person gets the more one can end up feeling fatigued. “One should experiment around with various hours of sleep and note levels of alertness,

According to Food Mood Expert, Nutritionist and author (The Antianxiety Food Solution: How the Foods You Eat Can Help You Calm Your Anxious Mind, Improve Your Mood, and End Cravings) Trudy Scott, who practices in Rancho Cordova, the SAD season is Sacramento begins in October and it is good to think about ways to combat SAD prior to the beginning of fall. Scott also stresses the importance of working out, and suggests winter outdoor sports such as skiing or snow-shoeing. “Light therapy, such as a fullspectrum lamp during the winter months may be effective for alleviating symptoms if you tend to get the winter blues or feel more anxious when it’s less sunny.” Scott advises. “It’s also possible that remedying any deficiency of vitamin D could improve seasonal anxiety and depression.”

hunger, energy throughout the day,” she says. “Exercise is a great way to boost sleep quality, as is a proper sleep routine.” Some people get depressed in the fall and winter because they love to work out outside and that option isn’t always available year round. Hundt recommends finding a good gym, a fun work out class, or watching challenging workout videos as an alternative to exercising outdoors. She also states that intensity of the workout is much more important than the duration. Hundt suggests getting in both cardio and strength training for an optimal workout that will leave one energized. Besides feeling energized, exercise may also raise serotonin levels.

Scott advises taking amino acids tryptophan and 5-HTP in supplement form because they can raise serotonin levels as well and also can stop evening cravings that are associated with low serotonin. Hundt recommends taking St. John’s Wort as opposed to antidepressants because it has been shown to improve depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, anorexia, insomnia, apathy and feelings of low self esteem without a lot of side effects. With more knowledge about SAD and some helpful advice, hopefully you can find a way to beat the fall and winter blues and maintain fierce attitude and energy throughout the fall and winters seasons. Mitch Darnell, MA, OM •Relationship Coach & Wedding Officiant

Dear Mitch, My husband says this is all in my head! At the ripe old age of 42, I’m feeling it. Know what I mean? Like everyone, my job and everything stresses me to no end. Lately, the kids “being kids” drives me crazy. It’s hard to workout as much as I’d like, or to really eat like I should. My doctor says my headaches are migraines; my backaches keep me awake nightly (I think I’m now addicted to the sleeping pills). I’m 42, not 92! I’m totally stressed out, and now I have “fibromyalgia”?! So what’s MY answer, Mitch? How does one figure out which of all of these vaunted cure-all remedies is the right one for us? I don’t have the time or patience to keep experimenting with one diet or program after another! My best friend swears by Yoga. My church pals argue about whether I need some kind of protein drink or a therapist! Lately, I can’t even concentrate on prayer, Mitch! Who sifts through all of the “remedies” to tell us what really works? You seem to have a lot of connections and I HOPE aren’t going to sell me something? Thanks. Fried and Burned Out Cameron Park, CA Dear Squelched, There is much mystery to life that we’ll never figure out. Meanwhile, we’re imbued with tremendous skills to not only arrive at answers to help ease the human experience, but also sometimes to sell those answers at handsome profits! Yes, the profit motive not only frequently confuses consumers, but sometimes (often?) taints the remedy peddlers’ motivations. I have nothing to sell you. Meanwhile, think about these:

• Every human experience (including aches and pains) engages Mind, Body AND Spirit. • The human body has 15 permanently engaged interdependent primary subsystems consistently interacting in response to stressors. Relevant realties: • There is no one answer. Most remedies are at best able to trigger or support healing within a few subsystems –skeletal, chemical, dietary, circulatory, endocrine, and psychological. • Everything you think, ingest, breathe, tough, see, hear or smell affects multiple subsystems in your Mind/Body/Spirit! • Solving parts of the puzzle creates change, which subsequently triggers multi-systemic stress, resulting in pains within related systems. MEANWHILE, you DO have access to the power to make healthy changes! Your body strives for healthy, thriving homeostatic ecosystem with all subsystems humming at full strength and vitality. • Every single time you make a positive choice (even to THINK positively), you support your Mind/Body/Spirit’s drive for healthy. So, every intervention that empowers your body is an “upper” for your systems. Not empowering creates codependence, as most drugs do. This is why most of those remedies sold by Multi-Level Marketing companies, at least initially make the consumer feel much better! Hey, if you’re extremely thirsty, even a cool alcoholic drink initially feels good because it shakes that thirst. However, sustained alcohol use is NOT good for your systems. Many “healthy” products on the market are, at best, a band aid, merely better than nothing or a worse substitute. Using them initially feels great but long-term use doesn’t provide healing and empowerment.

Seek products and programs that are reinforcers, supportive of your body’s natural systems! Run from those which create a dependency, professing to take over so your body doesn’t have to do the work! NOTE: I’m not referring to interventions necessary because your body honestly lacks the capacity to regain health. I am referring to what some healthcare practitioners, and many MLM and marketing companies offer: The “easy out” – A product which essentially denies your mind/body/spirit’s capability for healing and makes your systems dependent! Who do you trust?! The ultimate answers are in the darkness – in deep, quiet meditation where we can listen for God’s answers. Remember that the body responds to multiple stressors: pollutants, negative stressors, strained relationships, ineffective cognitions, destructive food and drink choices, and idleness so your body needs multiple empowering interventions to truly heal. If you go to a medical/health practitioner asking for a quick remedy, you’ve reduced your healing opportunity! Yes, some people are lucky that one program or supplement makes an enormous difference in their wellbeing. Meanwhile, even those people need to develop a comprehensive long-term plan or the unsupported subsystems will cry for help! And no two people share the exact same DNA, doshas, blood types, physiology, psychology and environments. No single remedy offers universal effectiveness. View all remedies with a huge “grain of salt”, yet seek the golden nuggets amongst the chatter. Your Health Depends on 3-D Balance H

ave you ever noticed that pain medication really doesn’t fix the pain in your low back or your leg? Have you ever noticed that going to your doctor really doesn’t fix it either?

By Dr. Donna, Editor

Have you found that physical therapy or chiropractic treatments allow you to make a little bit of progress but it seems that every few months there is one more setback in your recovery? Do you often wonder if you’ll ever be able to move your body again like you used to? Are you suffering from disability that you have accepted as permanent but know in your heart that there must be something that can make a difference?

Think of Your Body as Levers and Pulleys To Patrick Mummy, Founder of Symmetry for Health (Pain Relief through Posture Alignment Therapy), the body is a system of levers and pulleys acted upon by gravity. The key is to balance the pulleys and levers. When you go into his office for a free first consultation in Folsom (2575 E. Bidwell St., Ste. 260), you won’t be talking much about your pain. Instead, Patrick will explain the system and get right down to business. He’ll take 21 different measurements that are calculated three-dimensionally to determine which of the levers and pulleys in your body can be altered in the next two weeks. He’ll then show you very specific and customized exercises you can do 15 minutes per day that will start to align your body. His proven theory is that over time, the corrective exercises will align your body better – and this in itself will result in a decrease in pain and optimal performance.

Patrick Mummy, CEO

Founder of Symmetry for Health

After two weeks, you’ll return for an evaluation and receive new exercises for your 15-minute self-help program that will show you even more progress than you received the last two weeks. You’ll continue this process for four months, 18

when you’ll receive a maintenance program that will help you keep your gains and benefits.

Compromised Posture Results in Pain and Body Breakdown And if you’re like other clients he’s worked with over the last 17 years, you’ll notice great improvements, better than what you’ve ever seen from other health practitioners. “It’s not that other health practitioners are not effective,” Patrick said, “…but rather because when you can stand balanced, your body will have less pain and you are more effective at dealing with the forces of gravity on your body. Our sedentary lifestyles, injuries and maladapted movement patterns greatly compromise our optimal posture. As a result, we start to see our body breakdown – maybe knee cartilage wears down, neck pain increases, or back pain becomes more constant and more disabling.” By changing your alignment with exercises you do at home 15 minutes a day that emphasize the strength and balance of whole muscle groups, your brain begins sending correct signals to muscles on how to move your bones and hold your bones in a balanced position.

Why People Don’t Get Better After Surgery “If your posture is poor before surgery on your knee, shoulder or back, it will still be poor after surgery, resulting in additional surgeries. But if we can stop habits that contribute to the problems, eventually we will get down to the initial cause of the body’s breakdown. The exercises will rebuild good habits of movement that allow you to have the strength and balance you need to perform movements your body was designed to do,” he reported. Patrick has found that clients who initiate his program before surgery heal twice as fast as those who don’t – and it’s all due to the correction of the muscle imbalances.

When Do All the Posture Changes Start? According to Patrick, people start compensating by the age of five and the dysfunction starts when you begin school. Measuring dozens of children in kindergarten and first grade, he found they held themselves in a posture that reduced gravity’s forces on the body quite well. But by the time they hit 2nd grade, there were significant changes that resulted in misalignment. “It’s no wonder that a herniated disk occurs after wear and tear throughout the years,” he commented. “I’m even finding that it’s obvious why someone gets osteoporosis in a hip or spine based on the measurements.”

program for practitioners (massage therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractors and other bodyworkers) called Symmetry Complete, which helps take the responsibility of healing off of the practitioner and into the hands of their patients. “The measurements are a great way to quantify a client’s progress, and the system does what few practitioners do now – consider what the body needs in three planes on a progressive level to get excellent results, thus allowing a person to take control of their own healing” he said.

You can give him a call at 916-467-7764 to get on his list for one of these seminars. And if you’re an athlete who wants to be at your peak performance 100% of the time, or someone who just keeps wondering when you will recover fully from your injury, know that there’s a lot you can do and should do on your own to get your body aligned and healthy. He’s waiting now to schedule you for your free consultation. as Division 1 athlete, Patrick ended up creating his Symmetry program out of necessity. His last year in college athletics was filled with pain from injuries and he spent most of his time on the playing field in pain. Even though he was studying to be a physical therapist, he realized that the profession held no answers for him. And then the reason why dawned on him. It was because of what was happening in between treatments at home and in his personal life. His posture was out of alignment and couldn’t possibly contribute to ‘holding’ the changes made at the physical therapist’s office. After he pondered the body’s three-dimensional aspects, he began applying his strategy of progressive corrective exercises to fellow athletes and clients who had heard about him through others. The results kept getting better and better. Slowly, he collected enough data to develop algorithms that would be able to predict the fastest return to normal movement via a patented software program and device known as the Postural Assessment Tool™. This system not only helps support a client’s success at home, but is the focal point for his CEU-approved certification

On Courage

W

hat is courage? What is that mysterious substance that enables SOME of us to rise above seemingly insurmountable odds and prevail, while others succumb to the siren call of cowardice and run away? What is that ineffable, unpredictable quality that enables SOME of us to face life’s most difficult challenges head-on, while the rest of us prefer to linger in the background with the crowd where it’s safe? “ Let others deal with it,” says the coward. “My life is too important—my time too precious — to face such dangers and deal with such hardships.” Is this strange, supernatural substance called “courage” something one is born with, or is it something that must be developed with practice? And where does courage stop and fool-hardiness begin? But maybe I’m being a bit harsh in using the word “coward” to describe the average, normal reaction to appalling dilemmas and seemingly no-win situations. Sometimes cowardice appears the only logical reaction to certain situations. After all, what is more illogical than sacrificing oneself for the benefit of a complete stranger? The passing motorist who dives into the roaring river to save a drowning child, only to lose her own life. The soldier who throws himself on a hand grenade to shield his fellow soldiers. If everyone were possessed of courage, then it would cease to be such so special. The fact that it is such a prized attribute attests to its rarity and uncommonness. Most of us simply do not possess the stuff of heroes. In the same vein, most of us are not abject cowards either. The majority of us probably fall somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, willing to sacrifice much for our fellow inhabitants of this vale of tears called life, at least until the consequences become too unpleasant. Then the self-preservation instinct kicks in, and we release the desperate, clutching hand of our neighbor in order to save ourselves. Since the dawn of humankind, young boys have dreamed of winning glory in battle. Whether playing cops-and-robbers in the streets, or cowboys-and-Indians in the nearby field, young boys have always fantasized about single-handedly vanquishing enemy armies and saving the beautiful damsel in distress. It is the most ancient of male fantasies. And if that boy is lucky enough to grow up in a time of peace, he may always wonder how he would behave in the actual heat of battle. We all like to think we’d act selflessly and courageously, but there is always that nagging doubt in the back of the mind. The truth is no one can really know how he or she would react under such circumstances until actually put to the test. And so most of us will go to our graves wondering whether we in fact possess the moral

fiber necessary to willingly set aside our own well-being for the sake of another. In more recent times, a not unreasonable skepticism has arisen regarding such ancient values as courage, honor, patriotism, and self-sacrifice. These time-honored, abstract ideals have become quite unfashionable lately. They are considered tools of governments, used to induce young men and women to sacrifice their young lives in the name of country (i.e., for the self-serving, hegemonic purposes of the ruling classes). “What is honor?” asks Falstaff. “A word. And who hath it? He that died o’ Wednesday.” And it’s true: too often have the lives of young men and women been sacrificed for the convoluted and hypocritical dreams of their leaders. Language matters — particularly in time of war. But courage is not all about jumping in front of flying bullets and running into burning buildings. There is a much quieter, subtler kind of courage that we see every day all around us. The single mother working two jobs to put her children through college. The father who works long hours in the factory to ensure that his children never have to go without supper. The school teacher foregoing the much deserved vacation to Hawaii to ensure that her students do not have to go without books. These acts of courage might not be as spectacular as the ones that make the history books, but they are every bit as inspiring. H&F

The Ten Most Common Poisons Among Kids: Part 1 Disaster Preparedness

By Paul Purcell

F

or parents, keeping our kids safe is a constant top priority. But even with the best intentions it’s possible to overlook some potentially harmful household poisons. According to the National Academy of Poison Control Centers, 92 percent of all poison exposures occur in the home, and 52 percent of poison exposures occur in children under the age of 6.

Keep her safe. Lock poisons up — keep them out of sight and out of reach.

Following is a list of the most common poisons among children. Take note of them and make sure these items are securely out of your child’s reach. 1. Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Cosmetics contain many chemicals, some of which are even toxic to adults, but because children are smaller, and their metabolic rates are faster, a small amount of chemical or toxin can cause a serious reaction. Most poisonings occur when children are not being watched closely, such as when parents are busy making dinner or entertaining friends. Keep all cosmetics and personal care products in cabinets that children cannot reach or are locked with child-proof closures. This includes everything from shampoo, shaving cream and toothpaste (the fluoride in a tube of toothpaste can be detrimental if swallowed by small children) to mascara, lipsticks and perfumes. Even if you don’t think it’s dangerous, play it safe and keep it securely stashed away. 2. Cleaning Substances This one is a bit more obvious: cleaning products are ripe with caustic detergents, harsh chemicals and toxic residues. Should a child inhale cleaner fumes or put an object in their mouth that contains cleanser residue, the effects can be lethal. Many cleaners also contain corrosive agents that can burn the skin on contact, and other products, like antifreeze, taste sweet so a child 22

may not know it’s dangerous to drink. And, the bright colors are attractive to a child-Windex looks exactly like blue Kool-Aid, for example. As with cosmetics and personal care items, always keep cleansers out of the reach of children. You can also quit using them altogether if you opt to clean your house with PerfectClean terry wipes and mops, whose ultramicrofiber construction enables the clothes, mops and dusters to reach deep into microscopic crevices (NO other cleaning tool available even comes close!) and remove everything in their path: all forms of dirt, dust, hair, dander, and the biological contaminants too small to see with the naked eye-without the need for chemical cleansers! PerfectClean products are 100% safe, and are meant to be used dry or dampened with some water, which is ideal for homes with small children where poisoning is a major concern. 3. Pain Medicine/Fever Reducers One study found that up to 40 percent of pediatric household poisonings occurred while a parent was using the product. Pain medications (or other medications) may look like candy to a small child, but their developing bodies cannot handle the adult-sized dosages

and will process the drug much differently than an adult. For this reason, it’s never a good idea to encourage your child to take a medication by saying that it “tastes like candy.” If you take a medication, always be sure to take out only your necessary does and then put the rest in a secure location. The medicine cabinet is one of the worst places because children can easily climb up to them via the sink and open the door.

And don’t rely on childproof containers. Studies have found that children can invariably get them open if given enough time. Over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers can also be dangerous. Never give your child any medication, even if it’s OTC, that is not specifically approved to be safe for children. 4. Coins and Thermometers These objects present choking hazards to small children, who will often put small objects in their mouths immediately upon finding them left out on the floor or counter top. If a coin larger than a penny is swallowed, an X-ray is generally needed to be sure it has passed through the esophagus. Thermometers represent another hazard of mercury ingestion if they are broken. Mercury can emit a poisonous gas and is dangerous when swallowed, so be sure to clean up any broken glass thermometers thoroughly and safely. More next month. Children Poisoned

By Cheryl Webb

W

hy should threeyear-old Jason Whitley have died a lingering and horrible death after swallowing three ounces of hair conditioner? Two weeks after drinking the liquid, which contained ammonia, the boy died. And why should seven-month-old Adrian Gonzales have died? He crawled through a puddle of spilled laundry bleach, which gave him thirddegree burns on 50 percent of his tiny body, and burned his lungs from the fumes as well. It took him four agonizing days to die.

...by using safer household products you would no longer be taking unnecessary chances with your child. And why should little Peter Schwab have suffered so much? When he was a year old he crawled over to the dishwasher to watch his mother unloading it. Suddenly he put a finger into the detergent dispensing cup and ate a fingerful of wet but undissolved Electrasol. In minutes his face was red and blistered, and the inside of his mouth and his tongue were burned white. Because of a series of lucky circumstances, Peter was in a hospital within minutes and he recovered in a few days.

I could not believe what I was reading. It reminded me of a time when my 1- year-old was in the kitchen with me and I just happened to see her stick her hand in the dishwashing soap I just poured in the dishwasher. I grabbed her hand immediately and washed it off. What if I didn’t see her and she put her hand in her mouth? Would my daughter have been one of those horrible stories above? Why Must These Children Have Suffered? If only the children had never been exposed to such hazardous chemicals. There are more than 3 million poisonings every year. Household cleaners are the number one cause of poisoning of children. [The National Safe Kids Campaign, Poisoning 1996] The real tragedy here is that all of these accidents could have been prevented. A simple decision to use safer products could have meant that these children would not have had to suffer and die. Unfortunately, most parents don’t realize that they have a choice. Go into your kitchen and bathroom and look under the sinks where you keep your cleaning and personal care supplies. What have you found? Window cleaner? Bleach? Laundry and dish washing detergent? Shampoo? Mouthwash? These products can be violent, lethal poisons with the

potential to kill or seriously injure your child or any child who may come into your home. Maybe you keep your cleaning and personal care products locked away or up high out of the reach of children. If you do, good! Think about when you are cleaning the shower and you get a phone call. You stop for a moment to answer it. Are you aware the cleaning product you are using is near the shower low enough for your children to get to it? It only takes one time and you don’t always get a second chance! What You Can Do Today to Save Your Child’s Life! Ask yourself, “Why are these lethal products in your home at all?” Probably because you didn’t realize how dangerous they can be. The fact is, by using safer household products you would no longer be taking unnecessary chances with your child. Isn’t your child worth making a change to a healthier home?! I encourage you to make your home a healthy home by eliminating toxic chemicals. By removing the dangerous cleaners and personal care products, you remove the potential harms they cause. You eliminate the unnecessary risk for cancer, ADD, nervous disorders, asthma, birth defects, infertility, and a host of other problems. The 2012 London Games Bronze Medalist in Taekwondo joined hundreds of our students, Black Belts and those of many other regional schools at the 11th Annual Sacramento Invitational TKD Championships at Memorial Auditorium. Competitors and spectators enjoyed a great tournament, some outstanding rare demonstrations and laid eyes on the prize in meeting an American Olympian who brought home TKD Bronze. Robinson’s was also proud to present the world famous Shinsung University demonstration team from Korea. These are students who inspire TKD athletes to higher levels of performance, technique and power! After seeing the Shinsung kids jump eight feet in the air to break multiple boards going up and coming down the challenge is on for our Black Belts to reach higher, to excel in reaching beyond their current grasp of style, skill and strength. Sunglasses Aren’t Just a Fashion Statement

A recent report titled “Finding Your Shades, Protecting Your Vision” was published by the Vision Council in 2012 in hopes of raising awareness for the benefits of wearing sunglasses for both adults as well as children.

The 2012 Consumer Sunglass Study

The Vision Council polled 10,000 adults across the United States on their use and knowledge of sunglasses. The pole determined that 27% of American adults don’t wear sunglasses at all. When asked what prevented them from protecting their eyes, the following responses were given. • 20.2% Did not believe that they were at risk from sun exposure • 16.4% found them inconvenient • 48.8% forget to wear sunglasses • 13.9% lose or break sunglasses easily • 5.8% thought they were too costly to buy • 10.8% said they were not important to me

“A substantial proportion of people still do not understand that UV exposure is harmful to the eyes as well as the skin,” says Paul Michelson,MD, an ophthalmologist in La Jolla, California, and chairman of the Better Vision Institute, the advisory arm of the Vision Council. “Of even those who do understand, few understand it is the cumulative exposure that can be damaging.”

Choosing Sunglasses

Purchase a pair of sunglasses that block 99 to 100% of UVA and UVB light. You can choose the best frames that fit your face, style preference, and activity level, while giving you the protection you need. You want your sunglasses to feel comfortable so that you will wear them all the time.

UVA and UVB Rays

It is important for people to know that even though the UV rays are invisible to the human eyes, they are still very harmful. As the UV radiation reaches the Earth’s surface, it is made up of both UVA and UVB rays. Unprotected eyes can be damaged with short and long term exposure leading to temporary and permanent vision impairment.

Medical Problems Associated with Not Wearing Sunglasses

Skin Cancer: Skin cancer can develop not only on the skin near the eye, but also on the eyelid and in the eye. Cataracts: UV exposure can harm the lens of the eye. A progressive cloudiness occurs and can lead to cataracts. Macular Degeneration: Prolonged UV exposure can play a role in damaging the nerve cells of the macula, which is at the back of the eye and in the middle of the retina. This damage leads to blurriness and vision loss.

As we age, our chances for having vision problems is increased. UVs greatest impact occurs over time. When you wear sunglasses during these times of exposure, you can decrease your medical risks. Your skin isn’t the only thing to worry about when you go out into the sun. You need to protect your eyes from the sun too. Terri Test is a freelance writer in Sacramento and frequently writes articles on health and fitness. H&F

Core Concepts Personal training studio

Photokeratitis: This is a sunburn of the eye. It is temporary and usually heals in a few days, but can be very painful, cause blurred vision, and cause light sensitivity. Pterygium: An abnormal growth of tissue which can progress slowly from either corner of the eye across the white portion of the eye. This can cause inflammation or a change in vision. Reduction in Eyestrain and Headaches: Intense sunlight exposure can lead to migraine, tension, and other forms of headaches. Just by wearing sunglasses, headaches can be reduced and sometimes prevented altogether.

Eyes Stay More Moist: Your eyes need moisture to focus and perform correctly. Increased sun exposure causes the tears in the eyes to evaporate. By wearing sunglasses, this evaporation process is decreased.

American River Bike Trail By Sue Davis

L

ooking for something to do to really stimulate your soul’s regeneration and recuperation? The American River Bike Trail, also known as the (Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail) is a hidden jewel in the Sacramento Valley. It extends from Discovery Park in downtown Sacramento to Folsom, which is 33 miles out and 33 miles back in, making it a 66-mile bike ride for the day if one chooses. The trail crosses the river at Hazel Avenue in Fair Oaks and continues all the way to Beals Point at Folsom Lake. The two-lane bike trail is paved with markers, rest rooms and water fountains nearby. Trail side maps are available as well as telephones. The trail meanders along the American River and goes through many smaller parks along the way. Parking fees are $5 a day unless you contact the California Park Pass Sales office at the State Resources Building in downtown Sacramento and purchase a yearly pass. FAVORITE HAUNTS Riding one’s bike from the Hagan Park vicinity in Rancho Cordova to Hazel Avenue in Fair Oaks, the views are breathtaking. It will feel just like you are completely out in the wilderness, with most of the houses nearby simply out of sight. A single female rider will feel it is safe when many other riders are out and about. There are triathletes training daily and the speed they achieve is impressive, but not necessarily safest for families with strollers or young children riding. It is a word of caution; that’s all. The tip-off is if riders don’t see other bikers for over two minutes; that’s when it might be time to get off the trail. The trails are best suited and most used by bikers and runners, however, inline skaters and equestrians are out and about, too. Anyone’s bucket list should include simply going out to the trail and its parks for an old fashioned picnic with a group of friends and take in the canopy of nature. Another highlight on the American River Trail is the Sunrise Foot Bridge, where the views of the river in both directions are spectacular. If you continue east past Sunrise, always check out the old Fair Oaks Bridge, which leads directly into old Fair Oaks and home to many roosters. OLD FOREST Have you been through the Old Forest? One section of the trail was renamed after the Old Forest in the trilogy, Lord of the Rings. It has a jewel of a park or clearing right in the center and can be found right on the river bank. It is heavily forested with blackberry bushes, woodpeckers and plenty of squirrels. Horse trails and horse sightings are commonplace. The shadiness of this area is an attraction in itself, especially in the dog days of summer, when temps hit up over 100 degrees. WILDLIFE End the workday or take a break, hit the American River trail and start watching. One can never tire of the deer, turkeys and the incredible bird watching. Coyotes are known to grace the trails. You’ll discover many favorite places along on the American River Bike Trail. When a break is needed, head out to the river! H&F

Just Stretching Along M

Pain, discomfort; who wants it, right? And who wants it cycling? No one. Fortunately much of that pain can be alleviated. Simply assure yourself that the bike you have chosen to ride has been given the best chance to fit you. I admit it I’m a nag about this but I can’t help myself. I just think that buying an ill-fitting bike is akin to buying a suit two sizes too small and running in it for 30 minutes. Yeah, exactly! I encourage you to give yourself the chance to enjoy what cycling has to offer and do so by visiting a local shop for their sage advice. You won’t regret it.

The standing calf stretch: These affect the back of your lower legs. It is also a popular stretch for tennis players.

Hip flexor stretches: These are great postride stretches. These muscles pull the legs up towards the trunk during cycling motion. Stiffness develops because the cycling motion prevents the thigh from fully extending. This is an important stretch for the cyclist. Shoulder stretches: These simple stretches open the chest and assist in limbering up tight shoulders. Hamstring stretches: Hamstrings also do not have the opportunity to extend themselves fully during a cycling motion. This stretch helps keep the hamstrings supple and strong. The pigeon stretch: Any cyclist at any level should at least incorporate this stretch into their routine. This yogainspired stretch helps strengthen the all important gluteus

If you do decide to enhance every facet of your active life by stretching, be always aware that initially you will over do it. Guaranteed. No sense in setting yourself back a month because of overstretching. Happy limber trails. H&F

The quad stretch: This stretch affects the quads along the front of the thigh. These muscles are the some of the most used in cycling and it is a stretch that can be achieved when standing.

The hip and lower back stretch: This stretch opens the hips and in turn stretches the lower back and groin as well. It has been particularly helpful for my crappy golf swing.

These are examples of the stretches I do every morning. I timed myself to see how long it took for this article. I was done in less than ten minutes. It takes me longer to think about thinking about what to do than it did to do those stretches. Often times it takes me longer than that to find my keys. It is because I stretch that I no longer suffer the pain that made the longer rides unpleasant. So, yes I’m big on stretching. It has simply given me back an active lifestyle that I thought I would too soon have to give up.

CE

Because it is then I have to ask the question, “Do you stretch?” And if the answer is no, I hope you will consider some of the following exercises that have certainly made riding my bicycle a more comfortable experience.

If you do decide to enhance every facet of your active life by stretching, be always aware that initially you will over do it. Guaranteed. No sense in setting yourself back a month because of overstretching.

But what about when you’ve done all that, you then hopped on your bike, went and blew out five to ten miles of riding and came home cursing the idiot who wrote the article about getting the bike fitted. What a jerk he was! Your butt is just killing you. Well, I apologize ahead of time for that. I thought it was a good idea. I still do. However this is where I wanted to go.

By John Buchanan any of us have taken the winter off from riding and many more of us have taken longer than that. Spring always seems to rekindle a desire in me get out and reconnect with my bicycle, and I am sure there are many others who feel the same. However, care should be taken as to the condition of the bike before one just starts winging down the trail. And thankfully there are local bike shops that will help determine its soundness. The question of the physical soundness of the rider is what I would like to touch upon.

In researching the effects drugs and chemicals have on your well-being and spiritual health, L. Ron Hubbard made the revolutionary discovery that toxins lodge in the fatty tissues of the body and so can affect you even years after they’ve been assimilated. Fatigue, dulled thinking, spacing out, aging too quickly and many other side affects result. Here is the story of that discovery and the presentation of the effective and revolutionary Purification Program. rom the time Lisa Spurney, owner of Paws and the Palette Dog Bakery & Boutique, located at 1014 24th Street in Sacramento was a young girl, her passions were dogs and observing the beauty around her. She spent many hours preparing unique items for craft shows. Her earliest memory of craft item creation was at age 7 making painted porcelain pins of dogs. She sold them door-to-door and saved up enough money to buy a bicycle. After art college, Lisa decided to focus in more on having an art shop, specializing in acrylic paintings. She’s been painting since copying cartoons off the television since age 5. Some of her paintings have even been seen in art showings at the Challenges are the Mother of Invention Around the year 2000, she decided to get a basset hound and the cutest one to them was the

runt of the litter. She named her Ladybug. The dog developed allergies, yeast and bacterial infections in his long ears and more recently bladder issues that the breed is prone to develop. “He was even allergic to grass and wheat,” Lisa said, “and at that time there weren’t a lot of options on the market.” So Lisa got busy and started making him a home-cooked diet of boiled chicken and vegetables. This was great for him but like many other pet owners, she wanted to find something that she

“I began to realize that dogs like many of us have been deprived of veggies and need more greens for their digestion,” she said. “I believe we could add years on to the lifespan of dogs by adding veggies to their diets.” She began baking him customized dog treats, which led to the development of dog biscuits with

chicken in them, cookies with yogurt and carob and peanut butter, vegan wheat-free cookies and gluten-free dog treats, and dog pastries. A Doggy Business Blooms Along with Her Artwork In 2005, Lisa and her mother Mary Wardle opened a gift shop and dog bakery downtown that featured all these gourmet treats and more. When her mom retired, Lisa opened Paws and the Palette Dog Bakery & Boutique with an even larger line of products and pastries. Some of them include the following: • Mini cupcakes (1 inch by 1 inch) for dogs in several flavors • Soft dog foods that feel good in your dog’s mouth • Greenies • Chicken and beef dog biscuits • Happy birthday cookies • Dog popsicles in the summertime

Exercise control over your dog’s possessions. Take away all her toys, then give her a command, and when she obeys, give her the toy as a treat. After she plays with it for awhile, take it away again. When you come home, make your dog greet you first. Ignore him until he does. He must be submissive to you, not the other way around. Establish dog eating times. In the pack, the Alpha dog always eats first, and then the other dogs eat. Make sure the family eats first, followed

Wild and Crazy Pets the Presidents Owned By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski

PETS

istory books leave out the most important part of the Presidency – the pets! Does this mean that textbook writers believe students should be serious when they study and have no fun? And is that belief creating reasons for young students to despise the study of history? The fact is that pets are just as colorful as many of the Presidents. Pets contributed to the well being of the Presidents and their families just as much as our own pets do for us. Did you know that Teddy Roosevelt had more pets in his family than humans? Some of the pets he had included five bears, a flying squirrel, hyenas, coyotes, a raccoon, a one-legged rooster and a lion. Calvin Coolidge had 27 pets total, including a bobcat, pigmy hippo, wallaby, bear, two raccoons, a goose and two lion cubs. Animals Still the Best Medicine for Illness Teddy Roosevelt’s sons had ponies and Teddy’s son, Archie had a 350-pound pony named Algonquin. One time when Archie came down with measles and whooping cough at the same time, his brother tried to sneak in Algonquin to see Archie. He convinced one of the staff to help him get the pony to the elevator. But Algonquin didn’t understand elevators much so he was hesitant about getting in. It didn’t take him long to change his mind. Once the pony caught a glimpse of himself

in the mirror in the elevator, he walked right in and became fascinated with what he looked like. Algonquin cheered up 9-year-old Archie who recovered quickly after that. What Were the Anti-Aging Secrets of Zachary Taylor’s Horse Zachary Taylor, the 12th President, had a war horse named Old Whitey. Back then Old Whitey must have been nipping miracle elixirs because he lived to a very old age and made it to the White House when Taylor became President. In fact, scientists should have been studying the horse because he never lost any IQ points in his older age. His ears heard and picked out a beat from the Marine Band songs. Old Whitey would hear the first few notes of their first song and promptly prance over to the band to try to find his place in the march line. Poor Old Whitey had to be stalled in the stables to stop him from nudging the musicians to find his place in the parades he imagined were happening soon. Why Did Winks Overeat? Overeating isn’t only a problem of the 1990s and later. It was a problem seen in one of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s dogs, a hunting dog named Winks.

One day he sneaked into the kitchen while the staff was on break. The staff was happy that everything was ready for the important White House staff to be served. In fact, 19 breakfast plates were served up with bacon and eggs. Winks devoured every one of them. Poor Winks died of overeating when he was a puppy. That’s what the historical accounts say but was it overeating or was it a parasite that made him eat so much in the first place? Patient Advocacy: A New Healthcare Trend

A

s the healthcare industry becomes more complex, there is a growing desire for consumers to find trusted health professionals to assist them in navigating the complex healthcare system. Due to heavy patient loads, doctors can no longer be completely relied upon to help a patient through all the avenues of their medical journey. Patients need to equip themselves with resources. This is where the patient advocate comes into the picture. Why Consider an Advocate With the help of a healthcare advocate, the patient is empowered and able to demand the best possible care that is available to them. A patient no longer has to feel like they can’t play an active role in their own care because they lack knowledge of how to maneuver

health

by Terri Test through the system. And, because healthcare costs are so high, with the help of an advocate, patients can feel more confident that they are getting the most for each healthcare dollar spent. Types of Advocates There are two main groups of patient advocates available to assist consumers. There are those that work for a private/public business or organization and those that work privately as independent business owners. Advocates who work in the private sector as independent business owners are contracted by the patient and have various backgrounds in nursing, social work, or years of personal experience helping others. Patient advocates that work for hospitals, other healthcare facilities, insurance companies, or government entities. The Alzheimer’s Association or American Cancer Society are examples of organizations that can serve as patient advocates. These private/public groups usually have advocates who have nursing, social work, or customer service backgrounds. Finding an Advocate Because this is an emerging field, more and more resources are becoming available to the consumer. Not every city, though, has the same resources. Consumers have to do some individual research on resources available in each city and state. The first place to start is one’s own doctor’s office. Sometimes a doctor or his/her staff can make referral suggestions. The next step could be to check with one of the following resources:

Website for your state’s local chapter of Office of The Patient Advocate Patient Advocate Foundation, www.patientadvocate.org AdvoConnection, www.advoconnection.com National Association of Health Advocacy Consultants, www.nahac.memberlodge.com There is so much information available on the internet now so it is a great place to do some research. You can also check with your local library and the medical library of a predominate hospital in your area. One final option to consider for finding a patient advocate might be for a patient to ask his/her own family, friends, or neighbors. Anyone who has traveled down a rough medical path in the past probably gained a lot of resources along the way. Terri Test is a Certified Health Coach and freelance writer.
