Oral Health Warning DIRECTORY For Smokers Spoil yourself. Get refreshed & relaxed at any of these great business locations! S By Martin Hofschroer

mokers are getting a timely reminder about the dental damage they are incurring with their nicotine addiction. Regularly smoking cigarettes dramatically increases the risk of getting diseases such as mouth cancer and the nicotine ingredient also stains teeth leaving them with an unhealthy yellow tinge.

Despite these widely publicized dangers, recent research by the American government has revealed that smokers are less likely to visit their dentist compared to non-smokers. Research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that over a third of smokers complained of having a wide variety of dental problems ranging from stained teeth to jaw pain and toothache as well as infected gums. The number of problems reported by smokers was twice as many compared to people who had never smoked in their life but this did not encourage them to visit the dentist more regularly. It was discovered that 20 per cent of smokers surveyed claimed that they had not visited their dentist in at least five years and this reluctance to have their teeth checked is only exacerbating their oral health problems. Smokers should make regular appointments with their dentist because they are at a higher risk of suffering from oral diseases, which can be treated more effectively if caught early enough. The British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) reported that three-quarters of mouth cases

are linked to tobacco and alcohol consumption, so reducing or eliminating the amount you smoke and drink is incredibly important. Aside from the health issues, smoking also damages the appearance of a person’s facial features including their smile, which is one of the most important factors in making a positive first impression. Smokers are much more likely to have an unattractive yellow smile and have missing teeth compared to non-smokers and this puts them at a distinct disadvantage in their love life. The BDHF has stated that bad breath, which is another byproduct of smoking, is the number one passion killer for those looking for love on the big night. Tobacco is a serious cause of bad breath so smokers are advised to brush their tongue, or to use a tongue scraper, as this will also help to reduce the nicotine odors emanating from the mouth. If your attempts at eradicating bad breath are not working, it is advisable to make an appointment with your dentist or hygienist as they will be able to advise you on how to clean more effectively. HEALTH

Starting a Gluten Free Diet By Melanie Weir

A

diagnosis of Gluten Intolerance, Celiac Disease or Food Allergy can leave you feeling like a deer in headlights. The average time for a Celiac diagnosis is 10 years. By the time you’re diagnosed, you may have health problems. No matter how sick you are, learning to eat Gluten Free is a process, and you’re likely to make mistakes along the way. The goal is to learn as much as possible, so your mistakes are minimal. What is Gluten? Gluten is the outer casing of wheat, rye and barley. What about Oats? For Celiacs, commercial oats should also be avoided. Only 4 out of 5 Celiacs, can handle oats, and most doctors recommend no more than a 1/2 cup of oats, 3 times a week. Taking Gluten Out of the Diet is Easy, Right? Yes and no. Gluten has many names, not just wheat, rye and barley. Additionally, gluten contamination can occur during storage, shipment, manufacturing and packaging. What is the Simplest Way to Stay Gluten Free? Eat at Home - Eating out at restaurants and at other people’s houses will be possible in the future, but beginners should start by preparing foods at home. Brown bag it or use an ice chest when travelling. Eat Naturally Gluten Free Foods Simple foods come direct from the earth and include: fruits, vegetables, oils, beans, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds and poultry. Contamination of these foods is low, but some risks of contamination still occur. Poultry when manufacturers produce seasoned meats, sausages, lunchmeats or jerky. Seeds chia and hemp imported from overseas can be contaminated in storage vats that also ship grains like wheat, rye and barley. Nuts often produced in facilities that use seasonings including wheat flour. Beans and legumes increased risk with canning especially when additives are included. 6

Gluten Free Labeling The gluten free label is not regulated! This means that if you purchase a product that is labeled gluten free, you need to proceed with caution. Individuals with Celiac Disease should avoid products that contain more than 5ppm of gluten. Don’t Forget About Non-Foods Foods aren’t the only culprits to gluten contamination. Other problems include: playdough, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, hand lotion, vitamins and prescription drugs. Cross Contamination in Your Home Separate wooden utensils and cutting boards, strainers, cast iron skillets and toasters should be used for Celiacs. For traveling, toaster bags or commercial screens can be used for protection. Watch out for condiments (e.g. butter, mayonnaise, peanut butter, mustard, ect.). If it’s been used with gluten, don’t use it on your gluten free food. Protecting Yourself From Gluten Exposure Look for a Seal Purchase products that have seals certifying that they are free from gluten. These seals are: CSA, GFCO and QAI.

Read Ingredients Always read your ingredient lists. Even if the product has a seal. FIT Check It Use GFS Market’s FIT analysis to decrease your chance of cross contamination in processed foods, or shop at GFS and support the FIT model in action. Join Gluten Free Watchdog Keep up to date on products that are safe and products that are not safe by joining Tricia Thompson’s glutenfreewatchdog.com Watch for ‘Melanie’s List’ Keep up to date on recalls and mislabelled products, go to www.GFAlert.com. Purchase a Gluten Test Kit The Gluten Free Specialty Market located at 2612 J Street, Sacramento, CA will begin selling at home test kits that can detect gluten at 3ppm in mid-April. Save $5 when you pre-order your kit before May 30th. Join a Support Group For almost 5 decades, individuals in the Sacramento area have been advocating for proper diagnoses of Celiac Disease, Gluten Intolerance and Gluten Sensitivity. The Celiac Sprue Association, Chapter #24 currently meets in 5 different locations within the counties of Sacramento, Yolo and El Dorado. For more information about current CSA activities go to: http://sacceliacs.blogspot.com/ Take Action Dr. Philip Zimbardo once told me, “Knowledge is power to change oneself and the world.” It is up to us as a community to use our knowledge and take action. Senator Bill Emmerson has initiated CA Bill 1293 to regulate gluten free and wheat free labelling in California. Dear Health & Fitness Magazine, Approximately 30-50% of all my new patients became aware of my services through my ads in Health & Fitness Magazine. This has been a fairly consistent pattern since I began advertising with you around 13 years ago. If I were to count all the referrals from these new patients I would say that Health & Fitness Magazine has been responsible for helping me build 50% of my patient base. In all my years of practice no advertising has ever come close to these statistics. What is great about most of the patients that have heard about me from Health & Fitness Magazine is that they are truly interested in improving their health. They tend to refer other people who are also interested in health and fitness.

Relieving Pain Painlessly By Dr. Tracy L. Basso, D.P.M, F.A.C.F.A.S, Certified American Board of Podiatric Surgery

As far as the foot and ankle are concerned, the types of pathology that can be treated include intractable heel pain syndrome, plantar fasciitis, neuritis, metatarsalgia, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, rheumatoid arthritis, and neuroma. Neuropathy patients respond very nicely to this technology improving their sensation and reducing the stabbing and burning type of pain they typically experience. We have also seen dramatic results with sciatica pain. I was not particularly looking for new technology when I was introduced to the MLS Laser, and was quite skeptical at first. Since this laser was supposed to treat painful and inflammatory conditions, during the demonstration of the laser we treated some of the most challenging conditions and toughest patient cases we had in the practice. These were patients that did not respond to the traditional approach to their pathology, and had been through extensive therapy and treatments, and in some cases had already been to several doctors. I was surprised to see how well the patients responded. Virtually all of them reported improvement. Some reported dramatic improvement. These were some of the toughest cases we had seen in the practice. One particularly challenging case was the sixth consultant after a long history of treatment. This was a lady who had a very complex rearfoot and heel pain which was the result of an ankle fracture that was repaired surgically and then went on to osteomyelitis, which is a challenging bone infection. Ultimately the patient went on to have an ankle fusion that ended up poorly positioned, and with the ankle in a plantarflexed (or tiptoe) position. It was at this point that the patient presented to my office hoping to find relief from significant pain which was due partly to her bone pathology but also to nerve entrapment and poor biomechanical position of the ankle. This patient would come to the office in tears. I treated this patient with every possible treatment with the exception of re-operating on her ankle. She did not see improvement until we used the MLS Therapy Laser. She was pain free after three treatments. This was the only therapy that would reliably relieve pain. We had a very interesting case this last year, who happened to be one of the laser safety officers for UC Davis Medical School. He had pain related to subtalar arthrosis following an old calcaneal fracture. He was thinking he needed new orthotics and a cortisone injection. I presented the laser to him instead of the injection, and we updated his orthotics. Six treatments with the laser cured his pain. He subsequently received the new orthotics.

At the end of last year he continued to remain pain free. MLS Laser Therapy is a wonderful alternative to traditional cortisone injections and oral anti-inflammatory medications. I present all options to the patient and they decide what is best for them. The patients tend to opt for the laser as an alternative to injections and pills. The beauty of the MLS laser is that it is completely safe. And completely painless to administer. We have successfully treated neuropathy, morton’s neuroma, metatarsalgia, hallux limitus, pain from rheumatoid arthritis, tendonopathies, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, synovitis, achilles tendonosis, plantar fasciitis, post-operative edema and pain, ankle pain, and even some ulcers. We have even shrunk ganglion cysts with the laser. Obviously, from a business perspective I was only interested in adding a piece of equipment if it was going to add a worthwhile therapy for our patients, and is easily integrated into patient care. Now having utilitized this laser in my practice for over two years, we continue to see consistent response to the laser. The patients regularly report significant improvement. We have very high patient acceptance. And very little pushback even though this is an out of pocket expense. The laser integrates into a total care plan for the patient and gives the doctor an exceptional tool to reduce pain and inflammation as an alternative to traditional cortisone injections and oral therapy. ince early 2010 in my practice I have been utilizing a new technology that has provided extensive relief to my patients suffering from pain in their feed and ankles, and even their legs. The wonder of this technology is that it can be used to treat an array of conditions.

By Loretta Holt Hypnotherapy

L

oretta Holt Hypnotherapy is taking a look at what our children and teens are up against these days and how we can help. Shouldn’t it be our NUMBER ONE PRIORITY! They are the Future!

What is your child or teen doing right now? Do you know? How are they feeling? Are they withdrawn, angry, shy, experiencing pressure from out side influences? Have they experienced traumatic events? Dealing with a broken home? Have they gained weight? Lost interest? Overwhelmed? Are they already self medicating? I know it sounds harsh but its reality. Do you know? Children are extremely programmable. A child is in the alpha brain wave most of the time. A programmable state of mind. They come into this world open and excited and fearless. Then we domesticate them. They begin to be programmed. We teach them everything they know and do, so let us teach them what will bring them the life they truly desire and deserve. When we say “You are beautiful”, they feel beautiful, when we say “You are so intelligent”, they know they are. But when we say, “Why don’t you do better like your brother or sister?” or “You never do as well as you should” or “That is not good enough”, well then you know what happens! You felt the shift just reading the difference in the comments. So If you want to make sure your child is healthy, strong, confident and, successful… TEACH THEM TO BE! TELL THEM THEY ARE! Tell them they are beautiful, wonderful, and challenge oriented. Children even unborn and new born babies pick up all that is going on around them. Stress, Anxiety, Fear, and other emotions. So we must be careful what we say and do around them. Children encounter many of the same types of problems as adults, plus an entire spectrum of their own. In the same way that adults use hypnosis in the following areas, children may also be helped. Self Confidence, Weight Loss, Stuttering, Procrastination, Focus and Concentration, Nail Biting, Poor Sleeping Habits. Children also have their own list of situations that Loretta can help with. Bed Wetting, Conduct at School or Home, Thumb Sucking, General Learning, Study Habits, Disrespect, Getting Along With Others, Making New Friends, Loudness, Anger, Insecurity, Fear, Separation Anxiety, Hyperactive, Nervous Habits Etc.. The list is unlimited Current Approach to ADD In the past the normal treatment for children with ADD and ADHD was to place them on medication. Too often the result was a class room filled with Zombies. The child sat quietly but still had difficulty concentrating. Years ago ADD and ADHD was viewed primarily as a conduct problem. The action was taken to add more discipline to the child. 10

No Snacking During Mid-Morning Leads to Better Weight Loss

The 12-month randomized controlled trial included 123 overweight to obese women 50to 70- years old. The participants were allotted 1,200 to 2,000 calories daily with less than 30% of those calories from fat or a similar diet with a combination of 45 minutes of aerobic exercise five days a week. The study included lifestyle-based intervention such as nutritional counseling; however, the sessions did not address snacking which the study defined as food or beverage consumed between meals. The results of the study showed that by the end of the study, mid-morning snackers lost 7% of their body weight in contrast, dieters who ate a

Mann states that the results imply that by “grabbing a snack between breakfast and lunch, [weight loss efforts may be sabotaged]”. One of the study’s researchers, Anne McTiernan, MD, PhD, director of the Prevention Center at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s Public Health Sciences Division in Seattle emphasized that “since women on a weight loss program only have limited number of calories to spend each day, it is important.to incorporate nutrient-dense foods that are no more than 200 calories per serving.” Lead researcher Angela Kong, PhD, RD and her team concluded from the study that “snacking can be used to incorporate healthy foods; however, snacking patterns might also reflect unhealthy eating habits.” Unhealthy eating habits were described as mindless eating and overeating which could impede weight loss programs. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For Dementia

D

ementia or sometimes called senility is a group of symptoms which are caused by disorders that affect the brain and is not known to be a specific disease. People who will be affected by dementia will have different symptoms such as not being able to think properly enough to do normal activities like eating or getting dress. Symptoms also include losing control of emotions, losing the ability to solve problems, personality change, becoming easily agitated and hallucinations.

68 years of age. And, the last decade of their lives are miserable with emphysema, heart attacks, surgeries, cancer, hospitalizations, infections, etc. When alcohol, drugs, chemicals from food or environmental pollution, trauma, systemic infections, and myriad other insults are added, the reserve capacity of the human body is progressively lost. The net result is a shortened life.

Though it is widely known that Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause for dementia that it is almost two-thirds of dementia cases are because of it. But other than Alzheimer’s disease there are also less known causes for dementia. Parkinson’s disease is a neurological condition that affects movement by creating tremors, rigidity and other problems that involve balance and motor skills. Dementia symptoms of the disease are depression, retrieving memory and hardships in executive functioning. A way of treating dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease and migraine’s Parkinson’s disease is the modern alternative medication called Hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The medication is U.S. FDA approved and is also used to treat other illnesses such as ADD/ ADHD, insomnia, head injuries and Crohn’s disease. Though it has been proven to treat Alzheimer’s disease it also can be helpful in alleviating dementia but not its causes. The therapy does its work by using %100 oxygen and a state of the art Sechrist acrylic hyperbaric chamber. The patients sits or sleeps inside a hyperbaric chamber while breathing in pressurized oxygen for usually 1 hour.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for Premature Aging Premature aging is a shortened lifespan due to the effects of various stresses/insults to the human body. The most common and obvious ones are alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. This category of substances exerts a tremendous aging effect on the human body. Tobacco alone causes a 15% average reduction in lifespan. Using the figure of 80 years for an average U.S. adult’s lifespan, the smoker usually lives to 12

Insults to the human body cause progressive wounding of the body. This is easiest to see on brain blood flow scans such as SPECT (Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography) and PET (Positron Emission Tomography). Wounds in the brain on these scans are registered as areas of low blood flow/low oxygenation, which cause decreased neurological function. Most commonly, this decreased neurological function leads to the premature aging diagnosis called dementia. As discussed in the Oxygen Revolution by Dr. Harch and Virginia McCullough, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a generic drug for repair of these brain wounds. Regardless of the causes of the brain insults or injuries, the end product is a stereotypic chronic wound that responds to low pressures of hyperbaric oxygen treatments. What Drs. Neubauer, Harch, and others have shown in the past 30 years is that these “premature aging wounds” can be repaired and the patient improved neurologically, cognitively, behaviorally, and emotionally. Repair of these chronic wounds is a reversal of premature aging by use of HBOT as an anti-aging treatment. This is best illustrated with the brain scans of Dr. Harch’s dementia patients as presented to the House of Representatives in 2002 and 2004. The general dementia patient required 24h/day supervision and was facing institutionalization. After a two-month course of HBOT treatments, he returned to independent living that was unchanged four years later. With hyperbaric oxygen, the Alzheimer’s patient experienced the first improvement in cognitive function in the three years since his diagnosis. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy slowed the progression of his disease until he succumbed to a heart attack 4 years later. In both cases, HBOT helped prolong their lives and gave them quality of life, thus functioning as an anti-aging tool and proves to be effective in the treatment for dementia. Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a popular type of cosmetic surgery that can dramatically improve a patient’s physical appearance and self esteem. By eliminating loose skin and tissue from the area around the abdomen and waistline, a skilled plastic surgeon can achieve a firmer, sexier, and more youthful contour to the body. Many men and women find that after tummy tuck, they have the slimmer midsection and stomach that they always wanted. Women commonly use tummy tuck to regain their pre-pregnancy bodies following childbirth.

hen race cars speed around the track they burn rubber, loosen screws, and use gas. Any car that doesn’t stop for the pit crew isn’t going to last very long on the track, or in the race circuit. It’s surprising how cars resemble the human body. And how much our lifestyles have changed our bodies from luxury sedans to race cars. Our high paced life style leave some bodies in the dust. It’s always interesting to see the 70 year old in the assisted living facility, who needs help tying their shoes- and the 70 year old still completing 5K’s, and out running the 30 year olds. You have to ask yourself how you want to age, and what you can do to accomplish your goals. We treat our bodies like race cars, and rarely stop by to see the pit crew. To reach and maintain your fitness goals, and get the most miles out of your ride it’s important to take the time for regular tune-ups. After all your body the only vehicle you get.

Check Out my 4 Tips to a Speedy Recovery and a Long Ride

1) SLEEP A recent study showed that dieters that got 7.5+ hours of sleep regularly, lost twice as much fat as their sleepy counter parts. Not sleeping enough can cause your body to store fat, increase your blood pressure, decrease your ability to perform regular tasks, and have negative effects on your immune system. The average adult should regularly get 7.5-8.5 hours of sleep.

efficient recovery. For maximum recovery shoot for between 0.15-0.25 grams of protein per pound of your body weight and between 0.25-0.4 grams of carbs per pound of body weight. If you’re very overweight, use your goal weight when calculating how many carbs/protein to eat. 4) FLEXIBILITY TRAINING Flexibility has to do with the ability of your body parts to use their full range of motion. Limited range of motion can lead to chronic injury, pain, permanent joint damage, and decreased strength potential. Keeping all your muscles flexible puts less stress on your joints and back. A regular flexibility routine is vital to reaching your full fitness potential, and maintaining it. After warming up, stretching should be performed before and after workouts, and daily for maximum benefits. Yoga is also a great way to increase flexibility. As you speed through your daily tasks, and work-outs be sure to take the time to rest and recover. Remember you can’t trade your body in. If you’re ready to live BALANCED, healthy and fit, enjoy the support of a fitness community geared at realistic lifestyle changes with Action Boot Camps! Not sure if a Fitness Community is for you? 2) HYDRATION In spite of the fact that about 75% of the body and lean muscle tissue is water, many still load up on sugary sodas and caffeinated drinks to quench their thirst. Studies regularly prove water’s ability to speed up the metabolism. Being properly hydrated ensures you’ll be able to work your hardest during your work-out, and recover faster by transporting nutrients where they’re needed. Proper hydration can also increase energy and ward off chronic disease and pain. Hydration is more than water. Electrolytes are also key to staying hydrated. Check out the TrainHardOrGoHome blog or Facebook fan page for an easy homemade Electrolyte recipe, or try coconut water. Exercising adults need 80-96 ounces of water per day. Caffeine, intense exercise, and a weight loss goals means more H2O. 3) POST WORK-OUT NUTRITION After your work-out you’ve depleted your body of glycogen, and torn down your muscles. The next step is to rebuild them. Your body uses carbs to replenish energy and aid in the distribution of protein to repair muscles. You have a 30-45min window when your body is best able to absorb nutrients. Eating you largest meal and being sure to include both protein and carbs are vital for the most

The Science Behind Cannabis Safety By David Bruce Allen M.D.

D

rug safety is on the minds of most all Americans. Virtually every day we see ads that tell of possible side effects of some medication. Multiple side effects from pharmaceutical medications are so common that disclaimer warnings are the most prominent portion of the ads. Attorneys are constantly telling horror stories of “Bad Drugs”. Daily we see advertisements for law suits over some complication or adverse side effect of an FDA approved medication. Patients are looking for alternatives to taking medications with multiple other unintended negative effects to their health. Adverse side-effects of medications can target specific organs like kidneys or liver, others can affect your blood components and cause coagulation (Blood Clotting) problems, Heart Attacks, Strokes and Death. The list is endless, and not all problems are immediately apparent after use of the medications. Some effects may occur years later. Physicians refer to the adverse effects, and any organ failure caused by medicines as Morbidity. Mortality is of course when the patient dies of an immediate or delayed complication of drug consumption. So Drug complications are either Morbidity or Mortality. (M&M) There were many scientifically baseless accusation leveled at Cannabis “Marijuana” which were proven incorrect but their myth still

is considered truth by some. Since there is a virtual ban on scientific research on Cannabis in the United States, most all studies have been done outside the States. There are virtually no repeatable studies that show cannabis to be harmful except for some mild bronchitis that seldom occurs and is reversible with cessation of smoking. (Cannabis is not a gate-way drug and does not cause schizophrenia or Brain Damage, does not cause men’s breast to grow, is not Addictive, Etc.) The question of Morbidity of Cannabis is still being debated by some. There is no question about mortality associated with Cannabis consumption, as no death has ever been directly attributed to Cannabis. This fact is so remarkable as to be almost unbelievable but true. Even aspirin, one of the safest over the counter medication kills 1200 people a year in the United States. It is impossible for anyone to accidentally or even intentionally kill themselves with Cannabis. When humans overdose from drugs, the most common immediate cause of death is asphyxiation (low blood oxygen) and heart attack. Many drugs do this by depressing centers in the brain stem which control respiratory and Heart rate. When opiate receptors in the Brain Stem are overstimulated it causes depression of Breathing and lowering of Heart rate to such an extent life cannot be supported. The lowered respiratory rate lowers oxygen in the blood and prolonged low oxygen causes heart attacks and death. Fortunately there are no cannabinoid receptors in the Brain Stem and so no matter how much Cannabis you consume you can’t suppress your brain stem function. This simple fact is what is responsible for cannabis safety. Since Cannabis has no adverse effects to other organ function like kidney or liver, it is safe on long term (Chronic) exposure. Chronic diseases need to be treated with medicines that are safe when used on a chronic basis! I will discuss the types of cannabinoid receptors and their importance in my next article. Dear Mitch, I am having trouble with family, but not my own. My girlfriend and I have been together now for 3-1/2 years, and we have a great relationship. Yet getting to know her extended family has been such a pain. The biggest challenge is my girlfriend’s aunt. She (let’s call her Dawn) thinks the world of her aunt, as they’ve been very close for 25 years. Ever since she was a child, her aunt has been there, taking care of Dawn when she was very ill, consoling her during hard times, etc.. My girlfriend’s parents and brothers all accept me, and we get along great. Her aunt isn’t receptive at all, even though I’ve made effort by going with Dawn whenever she visits, and by trying to talk with this aunt. According to Dawn and her family, “She’s just like that… You’ve gotta be the one to come to her,” and make all of the effort basically. However, I’m not willing to do this. My feeling is that relationships take effort from both sides, but her family insists I need to work harder to make her feel important. I’m stuck between feeling like I’m overextending for a woman who seems to have no interest in reciprocating, and giving up! What should I do? Thank you, Olive Branch Rejected Lodi, California Hey Olive Branch, And family is SUPPOSED to be a haven in the harsh world! Ironically, I help a lot of people find their way by identifying their goals. That’s particularly rough here, isn’t it? What IS your goal in such a tough scenario? The first place I’d take you is right back to YOU! What are you committed to in your primary relationship with Dawn? r *T UIFSF "/: DIBODF UIJT BVOU JT BDUVBMMZ QJDLJOH VQ PO TPNFUIJOH JODPOgruous about you? Maybe Dawn’s aunt is attuned to something even very intuitive that seems “wrong” to her. And YOU may not even be aware of this “wrong” element, even if it IS real. r * DBO U UPUBMMZ BDDFQU TBOT TDSVUJOZ ZPVS SFQSFTFOUBUJPO POMZ CFDBVTF "-- descriptions of “reality” are subjective, and based on our interpretations and meanings. Thus, I’m challenging you to take a solid look at any potential areas for your own growth and contribution to this situation. A GREAT place to start is: With your girlfriend!

If your girlfriend’s so close to both you and her aunt, what is she saying about this whole scenario? Is SHE suggesting you need to “work harder”? If Dawn IS saying this, you need to look at whether she has a good point or perhaps she doesn’t know how to deal with a family dynamic that’s been around long before she was born. Or maybe she’s a player in a truly dysfunctional family system, and you have the opportunity to discern if you want to play along, or move along. Now if Dawn ISN’T saying you need to make more effort, has she advocated for you with the family? Who is actually on your side here? Are you still the outsider? This can be characteristic of homeostatic dysfunctional family systems – Families that have found relative balance & serenity by accepting everything EXCEPT newcomers! You may have heard the saying, “When you marry, you marry the family.” While this isn’t true in all cases, your presentation suggests that Dawn is very close to her family. PERHAPS she isn’t as close as I perceive. MAYBE as you and your girlfriend gain intimacy, she MAY break some of the ties to this aunt. MAYBE. 25 years of closeness is pretty hard to break. Frankly, the tenor of your letter doesn’t leave me sensing that you and your girlfriend are totally on the same page. ◆ Intimacy is the foundation on which to build your relationship, and on which you and Dawn should be able to rely for all challenges and decisions. ◆ Intimacy is only accessed via raw honesty, and full acceptance of each other. ◆ Intimacy is built through communication: Verbal, Touch, Silent, Action Communication. Relationships most powerful aspects. My friend, it seems that Dawn’s aunt isn’t comfortable with family-level intimacy with you. Perhaps that is her personality. Maybe she needs time to trust and let others in, or perhaps others aren’t EVER truly in! Focus on development of honest intimacy with Dawn, and challenges like relationship with this aunt become much more manageable. Sometimes, the best way to love another is to leave them outside your Inner Circle of Closeness, or even to let them go. reathing‌we mostly don’t think about the normal action of breathing in our daily life. It happens naturally without even trying, without even thinking. Our breathing pattern changes with emotions, with exercise, with stress, with excitement and many other times. Our bodies’ are designed to keep us breathing no matter what the circumstance. In our everyday life, we only use 50% or even less of our lung capacity. With every inhale our lungs deliver oxygen to our blood stream, which in turn delivers that oxygen to every cell of our body. This keeps us alive, even if other parts of our body are injured. Every time we exhale we rid out bodies of carbon dioxide and other gases and histamines, which can be toxic if they build up in our blood stream. In yoga we focus on our breath from the beginning of class to the end. We learn to control the breath, which is helpful in staying calm, recovering from strenuous postures and helping our bodies to naturally cool.

In a Bikram Yoga class we learn to use 100% of our lung capacity, and simultaneously improve the elasticity of the lungs. Every Bikram Yoga class begins with Pranayama Breathing. Prana is Sanskrit for vital life. What can be more vital for life that our breath? Prana enters the body through the breath and is sent to every cell through our circulatory system. As a new student, doing deep breathing exercises, your lungs might feel tight and small, which is perfectly normal. The more you do deep breathing, the more you will find your breath becomes deeper and fuller. Your lungs are like balloons, they must be properly inflated and stretched to become more flexible and capable of holding and processing more oxygen with greater efficiency. The goal in deep breathing is to utilize the lungs’ maximum capacity, increase circulation and rid the body of toxins trapped in the lungs. With more and more practice of this deep breathing exercise, we learn to control the breath and gain greater discipline with the breath. We gain control of the speed and duration of each inhale and exhale. Starting class with this deep breathing exercise allows the body to warm up from the inside out.

Standing deep breathing or Pranayama, is your opportunity to prepare yourself for Bikram Yoga. During this time in class you warm up your body, focus your mind, cleanse yourself of toxins and improve your strength and alignment. As you inhale, you pull the air through your nose and feel the air in your throat. At the same time, with knuckles under your chin, stretch your elbows up towards the ceiling. During the inhale you have to constrict your airway to create friction that makes a snoring sound. By narrowing the passageway through your throat, you can sustain a longer inhale and fill your lungs more. When you exhale you open your throat and push out as much air as possible over the course of six seconds. The more you complete the exhale, the more space you create for your next inhale. The friction of the inhale and exhale also has the benefit of creating heat. It might be hard to recognize in a hot room, but you can actually heat your body internally through Pranayama. Together the air you exhale and the sweat you create, serve to flush your body of toxins and impurities. During Pranayama breathing you are bringing more oxygen into your body thereby giving your heart more to work with. This stimulates your entire cardiovascular and circulatory system. Each breath should be deeper and longer that the one before it. As you lift your elbows on the inhale you expand your ribcage and chest, making more space for your lungs to expand, providing more oxygen for your heart to pump. Benefits of Electric Bicycle Conversion BICYCLING

By G. Neville t’s possible to save yourself a great deal of time, money and energy by simply converting your bike to an e-bike. An electric bicycle conversion is quick and easy to do, and usually costs a lot less money than going out and buying a brand new e-bike.

I

How to Convert a Bicycle By using electric bicycle conversion kits, it’s possible to convert any bicycle to electrical power in a short time. Most conversions are as easy as replacing a bike wheel. Simply remove the old wheel from your bike, and fit the new electrical drive wheel into its place. Your bicycle conversion kit should come with a simple to install controller, battery and wiring, and this is all very easy to mount and connect by following the instructions provided with your conversion kit. As soon as you are done with this, you are ready for the easiest riding experience of your life! Why You Should Convert Your Bicycle The electrical assistance given through electric bicycle conversions means that you can either pedal or just take it easy while you ride. You can even use a combination of both pedaling and drive assist. The electrical drive offered by your electric bicycle kit can give you many advantages over a normal pedal-powered bike. It extends your range and it allows you to take routes that may previously have been too difficult (too hilly). You will arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready for action! Perhaps you can use the electrical assist in the morning, and then pedal on the way home in order to get some much needed exercise in. E-bikes allow you to pedal as little or as often as you like. Just use the electric boost whenever you need a bit of help. Electric Bicycle Conversions Go Unnoticed by Others! Located discreetly in the center of your bicycle’s wheel, the electric motor in the conversion kit is the cleanest, cheapest and most efficient drive system for bikes that is available. They are also very quiet, meaning that no one will ever know that your bike is motorized following your electric bicycle conversions. This is because the electrical drive is incredibly silent, yet provides the ultimate boost in smooth riding. The best thing though, is that your electric bicycle kit has no impact on the handling of your bike. It will look to others as if you are riding a normal bicycle. Therefore, if you can ride a bicycle, then adapting and riding your own is a piece of cake. Things to Consider There are several different options to consider when contemplating buying a bicycle conversion kit. Motors normally come in three different sizes; 200W, 350W and 500W. The most common motor used is the 200W one, as e-bike conversions in cities don’t usually require too much power.

Be careful if you choose a kit that offers 350W or more, they can be very powerful! It is essential that you only install these kinds of kits onto bicycles that have steel forks. This can be checked by using a simple magnet. If the magnet sticks to the forks, then you are good to go. If not, then you should go get a steel set first. Cheap and Efficient Electric bicycle conversions lead to remarkable efficiency. Bicycles are already well known as one of the most efficient forms of transport in the world, but the benefits provided by electric bicycle conversions extend this efficiency even further. E-bikes are therefore one of the most practical machines for transportation that have ever been devised! They are also very affordable. Electric bicycle conversion kits can be had from as low as $300, with the very best electric bicycle conversions costing around $1500. What with the rising gas prices that just keep going up and up, it’s easy to calculate the savings potential that a conversion kit can bring. To get more info, tips and offers on electric bikes, be sure to visit www.ebikebuzz.com. And while you’re there, remember to download your free e-book How To Choose An E-bike That’s Right For You. It’s the most useful electric bicycle guide available to help you decide which e-bike is suited for you. H&F

Responsibility to our Clients By Chris Acosta/Certified Personal Trainer of “feeling great and not the other way around. We should educate clients that incremental lifestyle changes set over a longer period and without a finish line (vacation, wedding etc.) are what unconsciously become habits by redirecting those stubborn neurological pathways. We should congratulate that client who has made the most important part of their journey- deciding to make a change—and run with that decision.

At first, I felt the urge to laugh; looking around me to see if anyone else was taking in this dark comedy in progress. I stuck around long enough for my initial reaction to turn to complete disbelief and moments later as I drove off- anger. Was someone paying these folks to blend in with the equipment or to train people? Evidently there was some confusion over the job description.

As I wait for a rented scissor lift to get me off of this towering soapbox, let me add that all of these seemingly rigid duties can be accomplished in an environment where fun is a major component. During a recent boxing class I teach at Core Concepts, I had three different people hit the punch mitts in a frenetic three-minute round. I had them stand around me and called out combinations with nary a second of rest between them.

When I began training, I used to wonder why hour-long sessions seemed half as long. Was I doing something wrong? It wasn’t until an appointment with my dentist a few weeks later that an epiphany bloomed through the stench of singed tooth enamel and the whine of that fearful drill. Time flies when you’re having fun, simple as that. And it slows to a crawl when you aren’t as with my dentist visit which in grudging retrospect was useful for giving me much-needed perspective. My insecurity was all for naught. The sense of “lost time wasn’t from an alien abduction but from the much more plausible notion that I was immersed in the moment. This is not to say that I don’t pay attention to the clock to make sure that everything is on schedule. I just realized that my focus was completely on the task at hand; I took great pride in that. Sometimes it can be an uphill battle. The health industry is continuously inundated with airbrushed imagery and quick fixes with goals buried deep underneath—and ironically—unhealthy vanity. As personal trainers, we should instill the idea that “looking great is a byproduct

It was quite a workout; even for me, and at the conclusion of the round, every other students in the class (who were supposed to be hitting a speed bag or pounding away on a heavy bag) erupted in a surprising and enthusiastic cheer of appreciation! It was a moment I’ll never forget and a reminder that fun becomes a home in itself, a place you want to stay and enjoy for the rest of your life. And it’s a place where you don’t even need a cell phone. Core Concepts is a personal training studio in West Sacramento owned and operated by three certified personal trainers. OPINION

To Die a Good Death

I

once had a college professor who remarked, “There is no greater gift a parent can give a child than to die a good death.” At the time, I wasn’t old enough or wise enough to fully understand his intent; but obviously the words resonated, because they stuck with me. (My head is full of his casually tossedoff asides—most of which required years of incubation deep within me before hatching.) I would have liked to have waited a little longer before circumstances should prove conducive to a full and lasting comprehension of this particular adage: but Death abides no one’s schedule but its own.

his cigarettes around the house, planting little explosives in the tips (they sold these explosives at the local Magic Shop—really great for a laugh!) and otherwise sabotaging his ubiquitous Salem Ultras in any way possible.

My parents were away on an Alaskan cruise; I was staying at their place taking care of the dogs; and death was the last thing on my mind. But my youthful innocence came to an abrupt halt the moment my parents walked in the door, exhausted after a long trip. I enthusiastically welcomed them home, and happily received my perfunctory souvenir T-shirt (bald eagle or grizzly bear against misty mountainous backdrop, no doubt). But quickly I sensed that something was wrong. My mom—usually cheerful and upbeat—seemed strangely subdued. My dad seemed unwilling to look me in the eye. And then I saw what was the matter: the old man had inexplicably turned yellow! Not the pretty, soft yellow of sunsets and summer afternoons, but the rancid, sickly yellow of disease and decay and death. He had yellow skin, yellow eyes, and a distant, worried look on his face that I had never seen before. This was before any diagnosis, and all I knew was that something was wrong—terribly wrong. Over the course of the following days, my dad—quiet, stoic by nature—would say very little about his strangely altered condition, but the anxiety was evident in his stolid countenance. The yellow elephant in the room could not be ignored. The following week my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The news did not come as a big surprise. After all, my brother and I had spent much of our childhood hiding 26

In my later adolescence his drinking increased—or at least his family’s awareness of his drinking increased. He was overweight, never exercised, and, in retrospect, surely suffered from depression. I was the typical rebellious teenager—embarrassed to be seen within a hundred feet of my sartorially challenged old man. After high school football games, I would walk right past my eversupportive parent without saying a word, as though he were invisible. It never occurred to me that I was hurting him very much. I had no idea that he even had feelings. This was all to change that fateful day when he came home from Alaska jaundiced with pancreatic cancer. Over the course of the following year I was to witness such acts of courage and selflessness as I could hardly have imagined. Through endless bouts of chemotherapy, two brutal surgeries during which they removed large chunks of various internal organs; through much pain and suffering, he always managed to maintain his dignity and sense of humor—which now often took the form of gallows humor. Once, after my mom had made yet another ill-considered purchase, he grumbled, “I wish I could take the money with me when I go.” Never once in his illness did he complain or feel sorry for himself. If anything, the constant specter of death seemed to sharpen his vigor and verve. I noticed in him a new childlike sense of wonder and awe at the miracle of life. A mere three months before he passed away, he—bald and emaciated from months of tortuous treatment—was dragging his exhausted family around the San Diego Zoo with all the energy and enthusiasm of a child—thrilled by the sight of all the exotic animals. Never had I been so proud of the man. My dad: my hero. Now I know the meaning of my old professor’s words. H&F

May is National Bike Month – The Many Ways to Celebrate!

M

But April is a pretty great month as well for cycling. Which is why preparations are under way to promote our very own “May is Bike Month”. Commuters and cyclists of all variety are encouraged to participate by logging their May commuter miles. “Energizer Stations” have been staged along popular commuter routes hoping to raise awareness and participation in a national effort recognizing the importance of the humble bicycle as a means of transportation. When the “League of American Bicyclists” held a “bike to work day” in 1956 few could have guessed its shape today. Over 1.4 million miles were logged here in the valley alone in 2011. A goal of over 2 million has been set and with participation already in the thousands it seems within grasp. Those wishing to participate in logging their miles can register online at: www.mayisbikemonth. com. Here one can register as a family, team or individual, get the latest updates and view a hugely informative calendar of events.

The Bike Fest will offer music, ice-cream, free bicycle checks and basic maintenance, some product for sale and tons of information about transit and transportation services here in Sacramento. The festivities begin at 11am and finishes at 1pm. Great fun and worth checking out.

By John Buchanan ay is National Bike Month and all across the country people are being encouraged to commute by bike. A perfect choice May. The summer heat is still over the horizon and spring is in full bloom. With great weather our spirits are lifted and we feel healthier. Cycling just fits right in.

The Northern California Aids 3JEF TUBSUT .BZ UI BOE GFBtures 330 miles of Nor Cal beauty. Information can be found at: www.norcalaidscycle.org. And of course there is the Tour De Cluck. Hosted by the city of Davis, this chicken/cycling fest will be held May 26th. All those poultry obsessed can find greater particulars at: www.tourdecluck.org. A small sampling of what May has in store for the cycling minded. I again defer to the May is Bike Month website to check my dates. Possibly one tip over too many. So if May is Bike Month and all its festivities still doesn’t inspire one to air up the tires and oil the chain, consider just doing it merely for all the great reasons we should. Health. Spirit. Fun. Community. Economics. Environment. The celebration goes on and on. May is a great month to ride but all riding is just great.

The goal of the bike fest is a full throated advocacy of bicycling and other clean air methods of transportation. I have had the privilege of working with members of these organizations and continue to be humbled by their efforts and successes. I am convinced that without their tireless efforts, Sacramento indeed would be cycling poor.

enewal. Spring brings a chance to bloom…again. The calendar offers everyone a chance to decide to make life better in January when we make those annual resolutions that should be yielding significant results by March…if you followed up your decision by taking action. Only you can decide to be better than you are, as Henry Ford said, “If you think you can, or if you think you can’t, you are right.” Decide to give yourself six weeks to change and you can renew your health and raise your fitness level while increasing your endurance and strength thru martial arts training. The only one who can improve your situation is you. If you have stress, heartburn, headaches, cramps or feel bloated all the time, your body is sending signals, asking for help in regaining your health. As Ford suggested, attitude is the start in achievement. You can do almost anything, if you first believe you can. A word of caution... achieving takes ACTION! While it is an important ingredient, a positive attitude is NOT enough to ensure success in life. You actually have to work at it. It doesn’t matter how long it takes to accomplish, what’s important is you are taking action to change for the better. Start by giving yourself a goal. You may just want to get fit, or pursue a higher goal in becoming a Black Belt. Some people take longer than others to achieve Black Belt, but it can be done thru perseverance. Confucius is credited with saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with your first step,” for Sara, wife of Carmichael Master Instructor and Fifth Dan Black Belt Jonathon Peschke, life kept her from completing her training for an extended period, “And so it is after seventeen years, after my eldest has received her Black Belt and my husband his fifth degree, that I finally put myself to the test. Can I do it?” A wife, mother and teacher, Sara says, “I cannot stall or put it off, what message does that send.” And more to my point do you keep yourself from success? As Sara recalls, “But worse what message have I sent myself. I have a giant, neon INCOMPLETE sign blinking in my brain and I cannot stand it anymore.” You can too. If you get started today you can be fit and healthier in just weeks, earn your first belt in a couple months and for most students, achieve the goal of Black Belt excellence much faster than Sara! Despite two children, two complete home renovations and achieving a teaching credential Sara lived the goal, “This is it, all the years and waiting, procrastinating, excuses, setbacks. They are gone, I am in control.” However, as we all experience, life sometimes throws us a curve as Sara learned, “I’m getting to class regularly, sleeping well, retaining information. I’ve lost ten pounds. I feel light and know that Black Belt is within my reach. That is when I break my hand trying to break a brick in class one night. No one asked me to do it. I wanted to break the brick, felt I could break the brick. I did

not break the brick; I did break my hand though. Two bones on my right hand that take over 4 months to heal. My momentum hits a giant brick wall.” However, as Sara shared in her Black Belt essay, “There is a reason why each Robinson’s TKD class begins with the Tenets of Taekwondo. These simple words repeated over and over: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, Indomitable Spirit and Victory are meant to change your life. They are meant to seep into your subconscious-to make you better. These are the words that always came to mind when I felt like scrapping the whole thing. These are worthy ideals. I want them for my family and my friends and the whole world not just myself, but first I have to finish what I started or I am in danger of not believing in me. And when it comes down to it we can only change what we have control over, which is ourselves. It was time to finish this thing seventeen years in the making.” You can also renew your health, gain a positive outlook and carry your martial arts achievement to success in the rest of your life, like Sara who didn’t give up and wears her Black Belt proudly. Dental care- That doggy breath that you joke about is no laughing matter. Bad breath may be an indication of serious disease. Tartar

Blood work- As we age, our physicians want to try to catch diseases before they actually show clinical signs. Annual laboratory tests are common place in human medicine and for some ailments they want to test more frequently to make sure that things are caught early. Veterinarians would also like to catch some of those senior diseases or other metabolic diseases before they become a problem and our pet is actually sick. Running a senior panel, including a urinalysis, a complete chemistry screening of electrolytes and organ function tests, total thyroid levels, and a complete blood count is recommended at least annually after the age of 7 in most dogs and cats. Talk with your veterinarian on the best plan for your pet to catch metabolic disease before they are sick. Intestinal Parasite Screens- As pets get older; we tend to forgot about intestinal parasites. But even older dogs can get roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and giardia just to name a few. An annual fecal analysis can help detect a hidden parasite that isn’t causing any problems yet or it could be the cause of vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, or just not eating like they used to. A parasite screen is painless; just bring in a fresh fecal sample at your annual examination. This can protect your pet and your family since some parasites can be transmitted to humans. These are just some of the items to consider when it comes to your pet’s preventive health. Talk with your veterinarian for specific recommendations based on your pet and your lifestyles. How to Stop Your Dog From Running Away By Paul Casebourne room (but never assumes this right in the house), and a doghouse made out of straw bales, which she loves as it is very warm. She also knows where the edge is, and pushes it like crazy, but she is safe and well behaved and under control at all times because she can hear me.

I have tried whistles, chasing after my dog and just leaving her, none of which are satisfactory and just exposes the dog to danger. If I can’t control the dog at both short and long range, she is useless in the field other than as a pet. So how do I stop my pet from running away?

Every day that goes by, her knowledge of language and disciplined procedure improves. I think I will always use an electric collar now. I see it as a safety device that makes me much less apprehensive about the dog’s behavior. I can focus on expanding the dog’s com-

A gamekeeper suggested an electric collar. I dismissed it out of hand as being cruel, but it is not as cruel as watching your dog in agony pinned down under a car wheel. I decided to try an electric collar but resolved to be kind and fair. It transformed the dog without any cruelty at all and this is how it works: First and only after 6 months minimally, and only when the big 4 commands are in place can you use one. My collar has an audible alarm that the dog can hear even when she can’t hear or see me. She quickly learned to respond to this beep; it means only one thing – Heal. Since wildlife has hearing and great vision, we can see lots of wildlife when we are out now because we are quiet, the dog is under control at all times and above all is safe. Your dog and especially Springer Spaniels will want to do as you ask. You must be there any time that there needs to be attention or arresting and a bleeper really is on the spot and instant. If the dog doesn’t respond, there are 8 settings to ‘tweak your dog’s ear’, building up to a shock. All these are much gentler than rough handling or hitting the dog. All of them hurt a lot less than impact with a car. I must stress that if you don’t have the big four commands in place and a confident dog you should not deploy such a device, just keep your dog on a lead. The collar is only for the dog’s protection and control and the charge, which is about the same as a static shock from a door handle, does not cause the dog much discomfort, but lets her know I want her attention when all else fails. I don’t know how the shepherds do it but they have my admiration. I don’t need my little dog to achieve those levels. We have lots of fun together and she adores my two girls, mind you she adores everyone including the postman! Patience is the secret and then it’s a matter of time. She also has a special settee in our garden

prehension of commands, so her behavior continues to improve and she plays an even bigger and much more enjoyable part in daily activities. If you don’t want your pet to run off, get to grips with the collar, lead, teaching, rewarding and discipline and be heard. The best way to be heard is with a bleeping collar—really it works. I think these new devices are the dog equivalent of a 2-way radio. No soldier goes into combat without one. I think they are here to stay and used responsibly, will transform your life and make teaching your dog a real joy and with much less stress. Remember it is your finger on the button and you decide whether you are a dog trainer or a dog breaker. I know which I am. ow frequent are bicycle injuries and fatalities in the U.S? The National Centers for Disease Control reports that each year, more than 500,000 people in the US are treated in emergency departments for bicycle-related injuries. More than 700 people die each year as a result of bicycle-related injuries. What causes bicycle crashes? Vehicle drivers’ errors or inattention are the most frequent cause of bicycle crashes. Loose gravel on the road and rain-slicked surfaces frequently contributes to crashes. Speed increases risk; cyclists are more likely to sustain serious injury when they are riding fast. Doing stunts on your bicycles also increases the odds of accidents and injury. How can bicyclists protect themselves? The simplest and most effective protection is to wear a helmet. Helmets reduce the number of deaths and traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and they reduce overall medical costs.

brakes are working, and that there are no loose or broken parts on your bike. Having lights and reflectors that work makes you much more visible in the dark to motorists.

How important are preventive tactics? Wearing a helmet will not prevent you from being hit by a vehicle. The essential practice of safe bicycling is to be as conspicuous and as predictable as possible so that motorists around always know you are there and can predict what you are going to do.

Can I carry a child on my bicycle? A child riding with you should always wear a helmet. For carrying a child you should mount a special seat that fits behind the main seat, spoke guards to prevent the child’s feet from getting caught in the spokes.

What is the most dangerous time for bicyclists? Night is the most dangerous time, because visibility is reduced. Thirty-six per cent of bicycle fatalities occur between 6 p.m. and midnight.

In California, what are my responsibilities and rights? California law views bicyclists as having the same rights and responsibilities as the operators of cars and trucks. The California Vehicle Code governs bicycle riders, and the police deal with bicycle accidents by the same procedures as they use for motor vehicle accidents.

How can I protect myself when I’m biking at night? Take these steps to increase your visibility: Every bicyclist should have a headlamp, preferably the newer LED (Light Emitting Diode) models, which have a brighter light and draw less power from batteries. Every bicyclist should also have a blinking red rear light. In addition, cyclists traveling at dusk or in the dark should wear a reflective vest with the SMV (slow moving vehicle) triangle on it. Bicyclists’ clothing should be bright colored, with reflective strips, to increase visibility to drivers Should bicyclists ride with the traffic, or against the traffic? The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center of the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center advises that bicyclists should ride with traffic. When you ride against traffic — especially on the sidewalk — you make yourself almost invisible to motorists turning at intersections and driveways who may not be expecting or looking for anyone coming from your direction. About 25% of bicycle/motor vehicle collisions involve a rider who is either riding against traffic and/or riding on the sidewalk. How can I be sure that my bike is safe? The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends that you check your bicycle frequently to make sure that all parts are working right. Get in the habit of checking before you ride. Be sure that the 34

After a crash, what resources will pay my medical expenses? Many people will have insurance that will help pay medical bills, either through their health insurance or through the healthcare or the uninsured motorist provision in their automobile Insurance policy. These are called first party benefits, and they are the usual first resource for payment for medical expenses related to a bicycle injury. If my insurance company pays some of my medical bills after a accident, and if I then file a lawsuit, when I make a recovery will they be entitled to reimbursement? Most insurance policies have a contractual provision stipulating that the insurance company has a right to seek recovery for reimbursement.
