For over 20 years, Gianluca Genoni has been actively dedicated to deep freediving: he has set 15 world records in the different freediving disciplines. On August 17th, 1996 in Siracusa, he set his first world record in limited variable ballast at -106m. Genoni became the undisputed king of this discipline, beating his own records a good 10 times. He set his latest world record in the waters of Sharm El Sheikh on October 5th, 2006, descending to -141m. And not only limited variable ballast: Gianluca has also set two records in absolute variable ballast: - In 1998 he reached -135 m - In 1999 he conquered -138 m And last but not least, on October 2nd, 2010, in the waters off the coast of Zoagli, Genoni tackled a brand new diving discipline, descending to a depth of -152 meters with the help of a dive scooter, thereby setting a new record. In his book “Emozioni... profonde” (“Deep... emotions”), he recounts his sporting achievements through a reflective look at his life. This profound passion has led Gianluca to teach, create his own curriculum, and to help spread the safe practice of freediving through courses and internships around the world. Since 2002 Gianluca has taken part in medical and scientific tests and studies into freediving, and especially regarding the physiological study of vital parameters after a prolonged period of apnea. For 17 years, Gianluca Genoni has been a spokesperson for Mares and an incredibly important figure for consulting and testing in developing equipment dedicated to freediving at the highest levels.

Riccardo Sturla Avogadri was born to a family with a long history of risktaking, and more recently, of extreme sports. His passion for diving and great love for sharks led him to undertake some fascinating research into relaxation techniques, using a special massage on the snout to put many species of sharks to sleep (“relaximmobility” technique). The founder of the Shark Academy – an association whose purpose is understanding the world of the sea, sharks, their habitat, and how to protect the environment in which they live – currently boasts a great many fans and supporters. In 2007 in Jesolo Lido (VE), he founded the Aquarium-Museum-Exhibition, with 25,000 pieces in the collection, including, the 6-meter “white shark” and the jaw of “Megalodon”. In the aquarium there are gigantic tanks where it’s possible to dive without protection amongst 40 sharks and 20 crocodiles of a good 40 different species, including tiger sharks, bull sharks, longimanos, and 4-meter Nile crocodiles. Mares has always been by his side in all of his undertakings.

All models are the result of this inspiration, and are constructed with the utmost attention to detail both in design choices and in materials, comfortable and durable. The big news for 2012 is the back buoyancy version of the Hybrid BCD. With its sibling, it shares the foldable backpack, the ultra-ﬂat valves and the harness completely uncoupled from the aircell. In line with our company philosophy, this jacket is aimed at the recreational diver, but you’ll see some technical divers taking a closer look as well! The ﬁrst aspect you will notice is the comfort. A feeling of being one with the jacket; a direct result of the extralong, preformed and reinforced shoulder pads, which work in perfect unison with the exclusive Suspension System type cummerbund. SUITS Last year, with the introduction of the new She Dives line for female divers, we completed the renewal of the wetsuit line. This process culminated in January 2011 when, for the second time in a row, Mares won the prestigious Tauchen Award at the Boot Show in Düsseldorf. Trilastic continues to be the guiding philosophy in the way we design wetsuits. Intelligent placement of different materials of different thicknesses, combined with a smart choices of inner and outer linings, with the primary objective of maximizing thermal comfort on your dives. Mares wetsuits are split into three main families: Extreme, Elite and Prime. The Extreme line applies innovative solutions for maximum protection in cold waters (2ndSkin, Antarctica, Isotherm). Wetsuits in the Elite line are made of 100% ultrastretch neoprene and no detail is left unattended (Flexa). The wetsuits in the Prime line are more traditional, although you will still ﬁnd panels of ultrastretch neoprene strategically placed where they contribute the most. Riding this wave of innovation, in 2012 we will introduce two new dry suits and the corresponding undergarments, in addition to several accessories for wetsuits. Mobby’s, the well-known manufacturer from Japan, has long been a valuable partner of Mares and the results of this collaboration can be observed in

the two dry suits, Tech Fit and Pro Fit. Tech Fit, which is a diagonal front zip dry suit, and is manufactured in CORDURA®500D paired with two sheets of Tarpaulin type PVC. One of the PVC sheets is combined with fine Aluminium powder to minimize the heat loss. Another sheet is hot melt type of PVC to make the glued seal tape watertight. The end result is a three-layer suit with excellent durability and thermal protection characteristics. The Pro Fit is made in High-Density Neoprene. As density of neoprene increases, so does its ruggedness but usually this decreases flexibility. It is no secret, recreational divers want comfort. So in order to meet this requirement, Mares by Mobby’s HD neoprene, increases the density to the maximum extent possible, achieving maximum flexibility, as well as extreme durability. Both the Tec Fit and the Pro Fit are equipped with latex neck and wrist seals, Mobby’s ultra flat valves (Palm Fit design) and integrated vulcanized rubber boots. The suit comes in a convenient dry bag, within which you will also find the hood (with valve) and the low pressure hose. Ideal for both suits are the new Comfort 300 and Comfort 150 undergarments, thought through to the last detail. The Mares offering is completed with the Thermo & Rash Guard lines. The Comfort 300 and Comfort 150 are the ideal way to complete our new dry suits. The only difference between the two is in the weight of the fabric, hence the 300 is for extremely cold waters and the 150 is for more temperate waters. Each boasts a pocket on each side in addition to a small one on the chest, to store whatever small objects you take with you on the dive, such as a car key. Wrists and ankles are made of lycra and conical in shape, for easier donning. An elastic waistband minimizes bulk and gives a more tapered look, while the front zip has a double slider so it can be opened at either ends.

MASKS AND SNORKELS At Mares, the synonym for masks is “LiquidSkin”. The most important innovation since the introduction of silicone masks is Bi- Silicone technology. In all of the current masks on the market, the skirt is made of rubber, silicone, or another medium-hard elastomer. All of today’s masks are a compromise between the need of a hard material to provide support to the frame and lenses and that of a soft material to adapt to the contours of the face and provide a good ﬁt. Until today, manufacturers have been forced to look for compromise solutions, since the skirt was made of a single material. Mares Bi-Silicone technology LiquidSkin® greatly surpasses the current single material skirt technology. LiquidSkin® incorporates two different types of silicone into one molded skirt: a ﬁrmer portion for support and a softer portion for contact with your face. The support structure and the area of the seal around the lenses are molded with a silicone that is 30% harder than in any traditional mask. The section that rests on your face is made with silicone that is 45% softer and 270% more elastic. As a result, the mask is stronger and more stable than any traditional mask, yet unbelievably

comfortable and with a superior fit. In addition, the marks that are typically left on your face after a dive are mostly eliminated. The superior elasticity and softness of LiquidSkin® allows the mask to fit perfectly on a wider range of faces. LiquidSkin® adapts to facial movement and offers a great seal, virtually eliminating water leakage. Equalization is easier due to the super soft nose pocket; it’s like pinching your own nose. Its lightweight and soft adherence to the face is so gentle that you forget you are wearing it. The new Ergo snorkel family was designed for maximum performance both for scuba divers and snorkelers alike. From one end to the other, the ergonomic shape fits perfectly to the side of the head. All three versions have a corrugated flex hose made using high quality silicone and features a snorkel keeper which can be adjusted in many positions. All three have an exhaust valve in the mouthpiece for prompt purging. The mouthpiece is moulded in soft rubber for greater shock and wear resistance, also to properly host the exhaust valve.
