Department Spotlight: Year 1 Creating Independent Learners

Towards Creating Independent Learners After working online, and out of a normal classroom environment, for just under half an academic year, the children had become accustomed to receiving support and managing their own learning environment. Therefore, it was imperative that we nurture, support and encourage the children towards a more independent way of managing themselves to support their learning. Every child, although at a very young age, has their own desk where all resources are provided ranging from a number line to phonics sounds. The children are encouraged to choose the right resource for the right lesson and then use it in the lesson. The children have a lot of resources to choose from creating limited space in their trays. They have to manage the space in their own trays accordingly, encouraging independent, enquiry based thinking as to how better manage their belongings. The children have also been exploring the power of YET from assemblies with Ms Gilbert and Ms Nanda creating an independent growth mindset. This has helped the transition back into a classroom setting even more as it gives the children belief that the more we practise the more managing our new environment will become easier to us.
