32. SALON MLADIH
32ND YOUTH SALON
No, bez teme ostaje nam postupak, a on je opet najskliskiji teren u suvremenoj umjetnosti.
Let's start with the guideline that should define the Youth Salon, which is a review of works by artists of up to approximately 35 years old. I do not find the thematic determination of these shows, to begin with, fair to the artists whose work does not fit into the imposed thematic framework, and I will add that at best, I regard the theme as something secondary in art: everyone has a "story" or narrative, or interest, and art is the design of it into an aesthetic fact. On the other hand, the themes of these review exhibitions are always approximate, and are forced to expand their boundaries if they would have included this or that must-have author. But without the theme there is just the process, and it is again the slipperiest ground in contemporary art.
Pointing out that an experiment, with the opening of many horizons, often results in banality, is least contra to say because of the risk that it will denounce the pointer as an enemy of individualism. The result is a situation in which taste is increasingly referred to the experienced category. In fact, all in art finds justi-
fication with increasing ease; consequently, it does not mean that "all is art" (which terrified traditionalists fifty years ago), but just the opposite: "nothing is art”. In fact, for many years, during which interpreters were searching for a "story" behind the artwork, they turned the artwork itself into just an excuse to load meanings. More than once I have found an exhibition where educated visitors casually crossed above, admiring the ingenuity of the explicit context of paratexts. The consequence is a certain coolness in reception — we do not see the work of art with regard to the artwork itself, but also with regard to its relationship versus our, or social, knowledge. The balance of text and context gets lost. Milivoj Solar's thought about fashion (as the system of the ephemeral), which recently replaced taste (leveled by relativism, exposed in the book Critique of the Relativism of Taste) comes to mind. The stance of Vera Horvat Pintarić, that the aim for permanence in art results by repeating the formulation "by means of which cliché, empty and insistent figures are replicated" (From Kitsch to Eternity), complies with skepticism in the relativism of taste. The author highlights as important knowing the facts and our relationship to the context, not to justify the existing narratives, but to formulate the taste of this tyrannical and highly individual restrictive category, which is still a sine qua non when speaking about art. Of course, taste is not permanent and is by no means universal, but its rejection calls into question our engagement with art today and our competence to deal with it in general; it opens the door for the leveling of the values of all the cultural products of modernity, from the Turner Prize to turbo-folk, and I think that just the most agile relativists would not be able to swallow it. In the same work it is stated that "in the arts there is an expanded model of behavior peculiar to mass media: adaptation." It seems to me that the thought about art today, just to preserve individualism as the patrimony of modernism that eludes codification and opens the door to new solutions, is however trying to keep the category of quality (this word 7
opreza i navodnika), nasuprot prevladavajućoj paradigmi opravdanja.
with which, as with radioactive material, obviously one can never be too careful and quote), in contrast to the prevailing paradigm of justification. Drastic differences in the understanding of this concept at a glance recall relativism as a virus which cannot be resolved. But this is perhaps the real value of the context, not in terms of mitigating the phrase "spirit of the times", or as a universal excuse, but as a corpus which creates certain sensibilities and relations, the foundation from which one can note the quality of something. It is certainly knowledge about the present, but a lot more knowledge about history and traditions which are (like it or not) part of art today, that is perhaps most pronounced in the works of young authors, who through them and compared to them establish their own style.

Invited Artists
Velike dimenzije platana, precizna izvedba s naglašenom igrom sjena i crna pozadina asociraju na Caravaggiove sakralne prizore, dajući slikarsku monumentalnost temi. I ona i Grgur Akrap pokazuju slikarstvo danas kao polje mogućnosti brojnih i intenzivnih fascinacija, vođenih izuzetno individualnom poetikom.
For the Youth Salon I have invited nine artists whose previous creations I appreciate, so I think I should explain my choice.

Grgur Akrap is a painter who draws themes from his personal fascinations (these were athletes, ancient sculptures, cartography, and here is a scene of a trophy catch and shark jaws), and approaches them very uterinely, with strong impasto of paint and vigorously inflicted layers. He named his series The Promised Land, linking utopian projections with the possibilities of creativity. However, this utopia is not painted as idyllic, but also as threatening: the jaw of sea monster seems to emerge from the thick paint that highlights its presence. An entirely different approach is in the painting of Martina Grlić: she shows two industrial products of enormous size (cognac and chewing gum) that were seen on newsstands daily thirty years ago. At a glance, the point of her painting stands at the crossroads of hyperrealism and pop art. Her large-format canvases, precise performance with a strong play of shadow, and black backgrounds remind us of Caravaggio's sacred scenes, giving painting's monumentality to the theme. She and Grgur Akrap show painting today as a field of possibilities of numerous and
intense fascinations, guided by extremely individual poetics. The sculpture of Vojin Hraste offers social commentary in an interesting way, reminiscent of the famous 99% which were never in the spotlight, and he does it in a way that is simultaneously funny, sad and sculpturally sophisticated. The work of Mak Melcher discusses material: he applied a ton of self-supporting clay to a circular structure, and over time it flakes and breaks off. It is an ephemeral work, created to coincide with the Barrel Gallery (its circular form), but also to refer to the fragility of any material, even that arranged in such a monumental sculpture that captures space. The video of Petar Bunić poetically deals with speculation about the color of the sea, counterpointing scientific facts and images of the open sea. It is a melancholic video, similar to other works the artist has created (Proclamation of the Failure), in which a view of the sea and the strange sounds of its gurgling possess meditative properties. Animator Ivana Jurić exhibits The Grub, a prop from her eponymous animated film from this year. An organic association along with the sound of heartbeats in a dark room pulsates and introduces the viewer into its web, reminding us of the state of security and protection that we felt in the uterus. From the uterus we go out to the outer parts of the anatomy, thanks to the work of Luka Hrgović, with a real replica of the sleigh from the film Citizen Kane by Orson Welles, in which the values that the protagonist has forgotten in the years of the race for power are suggested. The ambiguity of this work is not exhausted in the gallery presentation of the movie replica (an ancient shift in the understanding of art), or in the symbolism that represents a prop in the film, or in the arts today. The name of the sleigh, Rosebud, suggests purity and potential brilliance (which will blossom and crumble at its peak, like Melcher's work, in the inevitability of life), and how Welles based the character Kane on the actual figure of the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst; “rosebud" is 9
allegedly the name that he gave to his fiancée’s vagina, and the fascination with film, creativity and bricolage ("tinkering") relates to Courbet’s fascination with the Origin of the World. Miron Milić, the author of numerous murals (the biggest one on Petrinjska, across from the Astoria Hotel) and street art, who along with his scenes always adds text that contextualizes them or moves them into the sphere of the everyday — the tragic or poetic in his work follows the poetics of a very direct activism, highlighting the problems of society with the excess of unresolved historical traumas. The work is a paraphrase of a simple (punk) clothing detail, a sign that declares the carrier as an opponent of fascism: a crossed swastika. In three works, Miro Župa mixes absurd sentences taken out of context, poetic, trans-rational and rhythmic sounds, with his caricature of little men and animals. His creative work is known for its completely anarchic approach, meaning and drawing, by which he creates humorous and surprising comic books, seemingly meaningless, but with endless implications. Perhaps behind it is just absurdity, but if art and its reception are what shapes and develops the world and human life within it, Župa's comics suggest searching for some sense, indicating at the same time that there is no point in seeking out this game.

The space that I can use and the complexity of some of the works does not allow deeper entry into their analysis, but it should be noted that their exposure at the Youth Salon is incentive for the artists to further their creativity, and the many interesting creations that are presented leave them the responsibility to further search for expression in a not-at-all-easy nor friendly art world.

TEHNIČKI OPIS RADA: KAO ŠTO VIDITE, RIJEČ JE O TRI PREKRASNE SLIKE KOJE SU MEĐUSOBNO POVEZANE I UOKVIRENE PRIKLADNIM OKVIRIMA KUPLJENIM U OFFERTISSIMI ZAPREŠIĆ PROŠLOG VIKENDA SAMO ZA POTREBE VAŠEG NATJEČAJA. UZ OKVIRE KUPLJEN JE I SET ČEŠLJEVA KOJE TOPLO PREPORUČAM. DAKLE, SLIKE SU NASTALE TEHNIKOM PRECRTAVANJA POMOĆU RAPIDOGRAFA NA PAUS PAPIR + BOJANJE FLOMIĆIMA SREDNJE KVALITETE.
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: As you can see, it's about three beautiful paintings that are related to each other and framed with appropriate picture frames, purchased at Offertissima in Zaprešić last weekend just for the purpose of your open call. Apart from the frames, I also purchased a set of combs, which I warmly recommend. Now, the pictures are made by the technique of tracing rapidograph on tracing paper + coloring with medium quality markers.
OBRAZLOŽENJE RADA: SMATRAM DA NIJE POTREBNO. SVE SE VIDI, NEMA NIKAKVIH TAJNI.
EXPLANATION OF WORK: I think it is unnecessary. Everyone can see there are no secrets.
ŽIVOTOPIS: NAŽALOST, MOJE MI RADNO MJESTO (MOGU PRILOŽITI UGOVOR O RADU) BRANI JAVNO OTKRIVANJE IDENTITETA I JAVNO DJELOVANJE MIMO POSLA. SVE POSLOVE OKO IZLAGANJA OBAVIT ĆE LJUBAZNA GOSPOĐA U KOJU IMAM POVJERENJA.
BIOGRAPHY: Unfortunately my workplace (I can attach my work contract) prohibits public disclosure of identity and public activity except for a job. All tasks for the exhibition will be done by a nice lady I have confidence in.
KOTIZACIJA: HM, TU SE NAVODI OIB, ALI NJEGA NE MOGU DOSTAVITI ZBOG GORE NAVEDENIH RAZLOGA. MOŽE LI TO GORE SPOMENUTA GOSPOĐA DONIJETI POD PAUZOM KOD VAS? GDJE I KADA?
FEE: Hmm, it specifies the personal identification number, but I cannot provide it because of the reasons I have stated above. Could the lady mentioned above deliver it, during our break? Where and when?

Konačan oblik i trajanje rada ovisit će o razvoju i ishodu Schumacherove situacije.
Co-authors: Šime Kunčić, Karl Ljubičić, Ivan Marković, Petar Mikulić Author's Explanation The dream as a space of privileged access is available only to the subject, inherently inaccessible to others. On the other hand, the inner life of the famous sports icon is unique in that it is open to the speculation of "the entire world". That is how Michael Schumacher, in some sense, is the only person excluded from monitoring the news about his condition. The video is a reconstruction of the dream of Michael Schumacher, the very successful driver in the history of Formula One. The appearance of sleep is assumed, deduced on the basis of a combination of Schumacher's general experience, a man who knows movement, speed and power, and his last experience, when he hit his head on stone while skiing, after which he fell into a coma. The work is conceived as a work in process, which means that its current duration is not final but can be incremented by adding new images. The final shape and duration of the work will depend on the development and outcome of Schumacher's situation.

It is the strictest rules, which seemed to be there to dry up the usual substance, that would reduce it to the final uniformity that best sheds light on its inexhaustible vitality... Henri Focillon The youth has embraced a vital essence that is described best by the words of Erich Fromm – to live means to be born at any moment. For that reason the education process for young artists is most precious — acting within the rules has a strong potential to create an entirely new world, where every student has the opportunity to perceive it, but with only one option — it must be felt deeply on the level of personal experience. Otherwise, it is just its lifeless reflection. It is then when one discovers brilliance of a vibrant quality — the life of constant possibilities and countless new births, where no exhaustion is sensed, but a source of constant inspiration and creative creation. At this point, they do not come up with the same solution, but the discovered information is regularly painted with the nature of each individual artist. Precisely this basic aspiration of the professors of the Academy, to nurture the expression of each individual in accordance with its characteristic nature,
No ta pravila uz sidro čvrsta oslonca u stečenom znanju, samo omogućavaju slobodu i nesmetan proces istraživanja. Znanje u metieru, perspektivi i proporcijama, a time i neopterćenost istim, omogućuje fokus u drugom smjeru - na potpuno posvećivanje istraživanju unutarnjeg i vanjskog svijeta, percepcija i doživljaja. Poticanjem na stalne procese eksperimenta mentori brižno izmiču oslonce kojima mladi umjetnici nastoje počivati u sigurnosti iluzije idealnog rješenja i konačno pronađenog izraza. Maja Zebec
but always in accordance with the core preferences of art, with the constant harnessing of the forces to develop their students’ ability to recognize what art is, to breathe life and rhythm in it, in orbits of its development. To develop in them the ability to live up to their inner being with art’s energies, in a simple, essential way, where even complex yarns of thought structures resonate as well as the spectator’s heart. Then the artist does not separate the existence of the object from his own hand and the observer’s eye with the intention of suggesting to the observer, he does not create with the idea of producing a reaction from the observer, but he, his work and the observer shall cease to be separate elements and become one. In art, as in life generally, it is good to study our own art, to develop our own skills and to mature in the knowledge of traditions. The educational process relies on the integration of these elements, but not with the goal to numb hands inside ideal and singular solutions, but due to its lengthy apprenticeships to provide support for unhindered development. To allow students to engage in the lively dynamism of development, it is essential to nurture the development of their expression within the rules. But these rules, to anchor the solid support of acquired knowledge, only allow freedom and an unrestricted research process. The knowledge of métier, perspective and proportions, and thus the unbiasedness of the same, allows us to focus on a different direction — on the complete consecration of the study of the inner and outer world, perception and experience. By encouraging the ongoing processes of the experiment, mentors carefully elude the supports on which young artists seek to rest in the safety of the illusions of the ideal solution and finally found expression. By canceling this fixed point with wise nuances of critical inquiry, they bring creativity back where it belongs — on the way — to constant research, to fresh and lively movement. In the process of ongoing dynamics, creative potential escapes its own self-determination, and thus the works have not reached their end, but communicate with the elements that by their presence only seek, explore relationships. To quote Focillon — they are a bunch of paintings that want to be born. It does not have to have a strong transformative power, but the refined impulse to search for solutions that have the ability to penetrate into the spirit of things and to become profound like a mark — where the experiment finally becomes knowledge.
