Handelsdagarna, a project started in 1982, arranged its first fair in April 1983. Initially, it was a single day of exhibitions, guest lectures, information about the education, and a concluding spex. The number of companies has grown steadily, from 40 exhibitors at the 10 year anniversary to today’s nearly 70 companies and organizations. This year, Handelsdagarna has arranged the 30th fair: 300 interview sessions, 11 lectures, 1 evening event, and 2 banquets with after parties. We hope you will enjoy the 30 year anniversary and that Handelsdagarna will continue to be arranged for ever.

Thirty years ago the oak door at SSE
opened for the Handelsdagarna-fair for the very first time. 30 years of interaction have flown by and hundreds of companies and thousands of students have visited the fair throughout the years! Now it is your time! Our goal with Handelsdagarna has been to create a platform for you to interact with the nearly 70 exhibitors that are here to meet you; companies that are attracted

by your intelligence, drive and social skills. Take this chance to show them your true talent. The Handelsdagarna week will bring a myriad of opportunities for you to improve your chances to build your career precisely as you want it. During the fair you will be able to speak with and ask questions to some of the most attractive and interesting employers of Sweden and the world. All questions are good questions,
so we encourage you to be open minded and curious. The company representatives know that you are bursting with concerns and are eager to talk to you and answer your questions. Throughout the week we will present lectures that will touch upon everything from networking and dress-codes to your choice of career path. The new HD Interaction evening gives students close to completing their studies an opportunity to get more insight into a selection of companies by participating in tasks and challenges.
Since early spring 2011 we have worked together to make the upcoming Handelsdagarna happen. We have cooperated with an outstanding committee, an amazing project group, and some superb functionaries. Thank you all for your dedicated work and for the fun we have had together. The
Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) is obviously a place for education and research. But it is also a meeting place, a place where students meet professors, business leaders, politicians, NGO representatives and fellow students from all over the world. Most of the meetings have a serious purpose, but sometimes it is all about having fun. Handelsdagarna is an annual and continuously growing event at SSE. The purpose is to create a meeting place for SSE students and representatives of the many companies and other organizations that frequently recruit SSE students. Thus Handelsdagarna has a serious purpose, but the long day of lectures, seminars and job talks is followed by an evening program more in

the “having fun� tradition. And, like many other events at SSE, the students organize Handelsdagarna. Handelsdagarna 2012 will not differ very much from its predecessors. But it is unique in the sense that it marks the 30th anniversary of Handelsdagarna. Needless to say only very viable student events continue to prosper after three decades. As in previous years I am sure that Handelsdagarna 2012 will give the visiting companies many opportunities to meet with potential future employees. Likewise, the SSE students will have many opportunities to learn about career options in different companies and other organizations. Together with the first signs of the coming spring and, hopefully, a
somewhat improved general economic outlook, I believe that Handelsdagarna 2012 will be a memorable experience for all parties. Welcome to SSE and Handelsdagarna 2012!

again it is time to open up the great portals of Sveavägen 65 to let in the magical atmosphere that can mean only one thing: Handelsdagarna is back. This year is special since the fair will reach a special milestone as Handelsdagarna celebrates 30 years in 2012! For over 30 years, Handelsdagarna has been an excellent meeting place for students and companies. In many cases, contacts made during the fair mean the single dream job for the student and the dream recruit for the company. What started out as a small event initiated by a couple of driven SSE students has evolved into the Student Association’s largest annual project. Regardless of who you are
or how far you have come in your studies, Handelsdagarna has something to offer you. My strongest recommendation to you is to use these days to the fullest. Companies are here to meet you and get to know you better, which is exactly the same attitude you should have when visiting the company booths. Dare to take as well as give!

During their guest lecture, Michaëla Blomquist and Filip Strömbäck from Michaël Berglund Executive Search will cover how they, through the process of an executive search, can find the most suitable and successful leaders. Based on a personality test that all attendees will be invited to take, they will also speak about how students can prepare themselves for their future careers.

Bo Lundgren Financial Crisis to Debt Crisis Bo Lundgren has been Director General of the Swedish National Debt Office since 2004. He is also chairman of the National Government Employee Pensions Board and vice chairman of the National Property Board. Between 1991 and 1994 Bo Lundgren was Minister for Fiscal and Financial Affairs and as such responsible for managing the severe crisis in the Swedish financial sector at that time. Bo Lundgren is the author of two books: “Lower Tax for All”, on a comprehensive tax reform for Sweden, 1989; and ”When the Bubble Burst”, on the crisis in the financial sector, 1998. Since he has comprehensive experience from financial crises and national finances his lecture will naturally focus on these topics. This presentation will be held in Swedish.

Jens Harland, Ströms A look into the businessman’s closet – How do you make it work from head to toe? Ströms Man & Woman’s ambition is to be the given alternative for businessmen and businesswomen when it is time for a wardrobe update. They have apparel for most occasions, but classic business clothing is closest to their heart. There is a lot of talk these days about the importance of profiling oneself and building a personal brand. Clothing plays a large part in how we are perceived. The people at Ströms are passionate about helping their customers find a personal style that feels right from within while sending the proper signals outward. Jens will share his experience on this type of clothing. What does it look like in 2012? Today, the focus will be on the man’s closet and what he can think about when he gets dressed for business. The world economy has experienced one of the most turbulent interludes in modern times. 2012 will see the implementation of a number of regulations that will have huge impacts on the financial industry.
Come and listen to experiences and advice from Gunilla Arhén, managing director and founder of the chief development and mentor program Ruter Dam, which celebrates 25 years in 2012. Gunilla will speak based on her extensive experience and focus on personal development, mentorship, and networking as important elements in your career. Gunilla has been a career adviser in the newspapers ”Dagens Nyheter” and ”Affärsvärlden”. She is the author of several books, most recently ”Mentorskap” (Mentorship) and ”Karriär” (Career). Jens has wide-ranging experience within the international finance industry, from the Department of Finance to IMF and NASDAQ OMX. Klas Eklund, SEB Green Capitalism
Michael Treschow 40 years of business experience
Klas Eklund is the Senior Economist of SEB, adjunct Professor of Economics at Lund University and a member of the government’s “Commission for the Future”. Prior to these commitments, Klas worked in the Swedish Ministry of Finance and the Prime Minister’s office, and he has been an adviser to the European Commission.
Michael Treschow is currently the Chairman of Unilever, one of the world’s leading providers of packaged consumer goods. He has previously served as chairman of Ericsson, as well as president and CEO of Atlas Copco and Electrolux. Michael holds a Master of Science from the Lund Institute of Technology.
He has also published several books, including the best selling economics text book in Sweden, a book on climate economics, a biography of former PM Olof Palme, and a financial thriller about murder and insider trading in the Minstry of Finance that was later adapted into a TV series.
During his guest lecture, Michael Treschow will share his vast business experience and the defining moments of his career that turned him into one of the most prominent business leaders in Sweden. This presentation will be held in Swedish.
Klas will speak about the need to make capitalism greener: how to use economic tools and incentives to increase energy efficiency and affect the behaviour of consumers and producers. This presentation will be held in English.

Mats Gabrielsson Entrepreneurship – Being a scrap dealer as a base for financing your business
Mattias Johansson, KPMG A KPMG career – what did it bring to me and what’s in it for you?
Born 1950, Mats Gabrielsson is majority or sole owner of some 40 companies through his investment company GIAB. He started his first business as a 14-year old and towards the end of the ‘70s bought a loss-making computer company, took the first 16 bit microcomputer company (Victor) out of chapter 11, and became one of the leading computer companies in the world. In 1988 the group had a turnover of 2 billion.
Mattias Johansson is an Audit Partner at KPMG. Since graduating from SSE, Mattias has spent 13 years with KPMG, working in Stockholm and New York. In addition to serving his clients, he has had different leadership positions in the firm. He is currently a member of the management group of KPMG Audit in Sweden, focusing mainly on growth and marketing issues. During his presentation, Mattias Johansson will talk about his experiences and your opportunities.
Mats left the company and founded GIAB, which has made over 200 investments the past 20 years. He is as much an angel as he is an entrepreneur. Mats is a former SSE student and the subject of Mats lecture will naturally be entrepreneurship and “being a scrap dealer as a base for financing your business”. The HD Interaction Evening is Handelsdagarna´s 30-year anniversary event designed to give you as a student a further chance to meet companies, increase your network, and advance your case solving skills. The event is for master and 3:rdyear bachelor students. You will meet five exclusively chosen companies from different industries. During the evening, you will be divided into groups and together with the company representatives solve case studies or other workshop tasks. HD Interaction will be held at the restaurant Pontus By The Sea and the evening will end with a joint mingle and buffet at one of Stockholm’s top restaurants. This event will be in English. Stefan finds focus at the hockey rink That the trading environment is demanding is no surprise. Stefan Jellvik and his team works on midsummer, but can pick the kids up at preschool regularly. Respecting and understanding one another is the key to a successful balance between work and leisure.

Stefan Jellvik has a background as a specialist within currency operations, but is now also the head of a team of six. Prior to starting at SEB five years ago, he worked at another bank and as a buyer of the type of products he now develops.
What is important to think about in your work? We work quite a lot. Because the work is demanding it is imperative to have meaningful free time. It can be about seeing your children or performing a hobby. This job requires you to be at a certain place at a certain time. That is why it’s important that it is at least perceived as being flexible. We chip in for each other so that we are able to pick up at preschool, for example.
What does your work entail? I’m responsible for trading, risk, and pricing of currency operations. The team works with product development and indirect sales
What should one think about in order to reach a balance? For me it’s about doing something I am passionate about in my free time. I focus on

it to the max, and in that way I recharge my batteries for work. I spend about 15 hours a week as a hockey coach and really leave work mentally. He achieves balance through his role as coach for a boys hockey team. Stefan has attended courses in leadership and company appraisal parallel to his work.
What is the greatest challenge of being a leader? Making my colleagues feel seen. People are different and it’s all about understanding everyone. My experience as a hockey coach has come to good use. Children and adults work in the same way. Everyone needs encouragement, praise, and proof that what they are doing is important in order to do their best. If you praise someone it’s easier to talk about areas of improvement. I am passionate about strong teams, and the way to achieve one is to help individuals develop.

Helene’s work is all about people Helene Willberg has worked within the audit section of KPMG to provide guidance to companies at the forefront of the business world since completing her studies at SSE. She believes that her work environment drives people to achieve their best while working closely with other passionate, knowledgeable people. In her capacity as CEO, Helene Willberg emphasizes the importance of teamwork, personal growth, and attending to intuition. How have your professional goals evolved since your time at SSE? When I went to SSE, the only thing I was certain of was that I would not have a career in audit. Then, when I met some people from KPMG at Handelsdagarna, I realized that this field is so fantastic because you’re never done. I’ve always had a desire to keep learning, to keep from stagnating, and I have always
26
considered knowledge something you can’t lose or have taken away. I didn’t aspire to or think that I would have a leadership position, but I thought it was important to get to work in a dynamic environment and always learn. I also understood from the representatives that while we are a knowledge-based company that works with analysis, everything is about people. There are 650 of us just in this branch, so there is a fantastic amount of knowledge, commitment, and happiness, as well as a passion to solve problems for companies. Is it important that what you do is significant in a greater sense? Yes. However, “in a greater sense” doesn’t mean that it has to be the big world questions, but rather making a difference for people around you, helping others succeed. It’s amazing to involve people in an assignment they didn’t think they could accomplish and then seeing them progress. Or helping companies with something really challenging. Success, to me, is helping others succeed.

What do you consider your greatest achievement in your career? If I look back, what I am the most proud of is my first managing position and was asked to start a new department that thrived and turned into a success. We helped many companies and many of the people involved grew in this process. I experienced personal development through this role as a leader. What is your view on teamwork? Our whole company builds on collaboration. We don’t do anything exclusively as individuals. Yet each person is extremely important as an individual in the team. We do auditing,
Photo: Cecilia Liu advisory services, and tax consultations, and what ties this all together is that we help clients to solve complex problems, to navigate a complex reality. Heads of companies have to take many things into consideration: international regulations, macroeconomic development, uncertainty, risks. Collaboration is crucial for us to solve these problems. Teamwork really is a passion of mine. What advice can you give to SSE students contemplating their future employment? You have to be responsive to your gut feeling. “Is this a company where I will feel right, where I will have confidence in the people?” During Handelsdagarna, listen to the facts, but really just think about how you feel. The representatives are bearers of a culture. That is my absolute advice. Dare to trust your intuition.

Maria Åsenius
Head of Cabinet for Sweden’s commissioner to the European Commission Maria Åsenius as a student often asked herself what she was doing at SSE. Yet she knew from her political involvement as an adolescent that she wanted to change the world for the better. Working at a Volvo assembly line for a year waiting for a calling, Maria realized that a degree in economics could carry weight in a political career, and thus matriculated at SSE in 1983. The desire to make a difference has been an underlying motivation that has caused her to stay within politics and led her to her current position as Head of Cabinet for Sweden’s commissioner to the European Commission in Brussels. Upon receiving her diploma from SSE, Maria started writing editorials at Göteborgstidningen. She was the debate editor and editorial writer at Dagens Nyheter before writing a book and working as a freelance writer for the business magazine Veckans Affärer while living in Brazil and France. When her children were born, Maria put her work on hold. “At that time I actually wondered if I would ever have another job in my life,” she says, and admits to taking

adversity quite badly. “Setbacks are healthy, but I get very angry when they happen to me. But that forces me to give everything I have in order to keep from being in that kind of situation again.” But Maria’s career was far from over. She received an offer of a temporary post as press secretary for the Swedish minister of finance, who had been looking for someone who could write, who understood economics, and whose heart was in the right place. Maria then worked with the minister for culture and immigration as an expert until the sitting administration was defeated in 1994. Just a year later, Sweden entered the European Union, and Maria has been working with European affairs ever since. She started as councilor for the liberal group in the European Parliament in Brussels and entered the staff of the speaker of the Parliament before making the move to the European Commission. She became a staff member for Finland’s commissioner, who was responsible for the future expansion of the EU, an issue Maria found very exciting. Asked to assume the position of state secretary for European affairs, Maria returned to Sweden. “It was very exciting because it was

I also spent some of that time convincing Cecilia Malmström, who was my minister, that she would want to become commissioner. And that went well.” Indeed, Cecilia Malmström became Sweden’s commissioner to the EU, and Maria returned to Brussels to serve as her head of cabinet. In this capacity, Maria handles questions about Europe as a whole. The Commission is the executive organ of the EU, and Maria’s workday varies from day to day, though there is a weekly rhythm based on the days that the commissioners convene. The commissioners’ task includes suggesting legislation to the Parliament and the Council, setting goals for the Union, and putting EU policies and budget into practice. Cecilia Malmström’s cabinet is working towards such goals as greater security within Europe and a common European asylum and migration
Continuing to write editorials would have been Maria’s alternative career path of choice. “I didn’t feel like the typical SSE student,” she reflects. “I heard how everyone talked about wanting traineeships at large companies or at banks or in the financial sector, and I wondered what I was doing because I didn’t want that.” Still, Maria looks back at her student life at SSE with fondness. Moving to Stockholm with nothing on her calendar but doing well in the various activities during the introductory week was one of the few times in her life that she felt utterly free. “I have to say that I thought the SSE parties were incredibly fun, in spite of the smoky, shabby basement rooms.” Maria also values the structured thinking and ability to handle massive amounts of text that she learned at SSE. “It is more important now than ever to receive a good, solid education,” says Maria, “because the competition has not decreased since I graduated 25 years ago.” She emphasizes the importance of students choosing an educational path that they think is interesting to them. “The most important thing is that you’re successful in your own eyes. It doesn’t have to be with conventional measurements, as long as you yourself are content with what you have accomplished.”

Peter Wolodarski
Editorial Page Editor of Dagens Nyheter As editorial page editor of Dagens Nyheter, SSE alumnus Peter Wolodarski is able to combine his interests in politics, society, and journalism. Peter has always worked with journalism in some way, whether through the school newspaper, the paper of a political youth organization, or a summer job at Expressen. At SSE, Peter contributed to Minimax and would have liked to be a part of the school newspaper Hermes. “But they didn’t let me be a part of their staff,” Peter recalls. “The editor-in-chief at the time was the current editor-in-chief of Aftonbladet. I remind her of that sometimes when we meet,” he adds jokingly. Peter saw the SSE environment as a place of stimulation and development, with excellent professors and “a bunch of other smart people, often people who are smarter than you are.” He thinks that a student’s value – “capital” – lies in his or her own head, independent of geographic location. His advice is for students to be well educated, welcome new things, experiment, and not always go in the same direction as everybody else. Peter, whose vision deteriorated from all the

reading at SSE, surprised many of his former classmates with his choice of occupation. Working with areas he is interested in while having a large degree of freedom is important to Peter. The control allows him to fill the day with meaningful content. Work, he believes, should be intellectually stimulating in order to be satisfying. Peter is drawn to politics, for example, because it is involves exceedingly existential questions. “I think that in order to thrive in your professional life as well as have fun and feel joy, it is very important to strive toward something you feel attracted to.” Peter is passionate about freedom and respect for the individual, the expansion of democracy in the world, and a climate of tolerance in debate. He has seen that DN can contribute with respect to the latter by featuring a decent tone in the debate it conducts and the content of the paper. Peter considers words instruments to formulate thoughts and feelings to influence others. “Words don’t kill, but they can inspire,” he says, citing their role in the inception of the recent act of terror in Norway as an example. More voices are being heard now than ever before thanks to social media, but Peter has seen interest in the editorial pages increase.
While opinion journalism is in no danger of declining, Peter sees “classical” journalism facing a challenge. This type of reporting is expensive, and with the dwindling interest to pay for paper newspapers in the west, financing a large editorial organization is becoming more difficult. “With all due respect to Twitter, it’s a pretty good thing to have 300 journalists employed full time to work with monitoring what is happening in our society.” Newspapers like DN have improved their methods of charging for content, such as featuring advertisements online. Peter is positive to digitizing newspapers, but he has yet to see a business plan for financing a large such publication since an overwhelming amount of a paper’s revenue still derives from print advertisement. Still, he does not see his three children subscribing to print newspapers in the future.

It is very important to strive toward something you feel attracted to.” “Maybe because, in this great diversity of voices, there is an even greater need for a few secure points of reference to relate to.” Peter regards his influence as one of these indicators limited by readers’ capability to form perceptions of his journalism through critical reading. Credibility is something Peter, like any journalist, has had to build through a relationship with his readers, through their responses to his articles. He says that the paper’s real power lies in helping to decide what topics are discussed.
Peter’s children are a big source of inspiration for him. He is always on the alert for potential topics to write about, and his ideas have not decreased as the years at DN have gone by, but rather the opposite. A topic Peter finds particularly interesting at the moment is what the economic crisis is doing to Europe: how it is affecting the climate of tolerance, economic conditions, democracy, and unity in a series of countries. Unfortunately, he is not optimistic. Before changing his concentration to economics, Peter, like many students at SSE in the nineties, started studying finance, thinking that “the road to happiness and prosperity goes through London.” In light of today’s turbulent economic situation, Peter believes that there should have been a greater historical component to the finance courses back then; that a poor understanding of economic history was a factor in the escalation of our current problems. “If you don’t know your history you can’t plan for the future, and you can’t manage the time you’re living in.”
