LETTER FROM THE EDITOR I am happy to introduce the new co-owner of High Country Wedding Guide, Annette Beeler. Annette and I met several years ago when her daughter served on with my team at local international relief organization, Samaritan’s Purse. We quickly forged a wonderful friendship that turned into a budding business relationship. Annette owned a boutique in Blowing Rock, served in local real estate, and has been involved in wedding planning for years. I am excited to bring her experience, servant’s heart and passion to the Guide. We decided to create a Special Edition of High Country Wedding Guide to introduce our partnership and the future look of the magazine. Talented designer, Abany Bauer helped us redesign many aspects of the magazine including the venue guide and bridal story section. Her creativity inspired an overall fresh look and organization to the Guide. We want HCWG to bless brides and local businesses while reflecting our hearts to serve. A portion of advertising profits will go toward a local charity of our choice each year. We also awarded our first Wedding-Aid Award this year to a special bride at the ACES bridal show who used the award toward services with Shady Grove Gardens. Over the years I have encountered many brides who wished to incorporate a giving opportunity for their guests. For example, one local couple Brian and Lindsey Tester, were one of the first to purchase wine for their wedding from local charity, Wine to Water. The proceeds of all sales from Wine to Water go toward building wells for people who don’t have access to clean drinking water. Many others have followed their example and thousands in need have received clean water as a result.

8

Annette Beeler and Rachael Mills in downtown Blowing Rock.

Brides and grooms, we challenge you to think about incorporating a charitable element into your wedding. Whether providing TOMS shoes for your wedding party, purchasing gifts purposeley, receiving donations to your favorite cause in lieu of gifts, or working with vendors who support local charities, together we can do a little something that can make a big difference in the lives of others.

Camp

WEDDING PHOTOS BY M&E PHOTO STUDIO

M

organ and Raun’s wedding celebration is one for the books - one filled with unique memories, quirky traditions and fun games - all taking place at Camp Sky Ranch in a ceremony-turned-1950’s-camp. Both from the busy city of Chicago, Morgan spent many summers in the High Country vacationing with family, filled with fond memories. Morgan and Raun wanted to get married in a place where they felt “calm and happy.” They found that in the Blue Ridge Mountains and fell in love with the charm and beauty of Camp Sky Ranch, a former summer camp for children with disabilities.

Morgan and Raun wanted a to have their friends and family completely together for the weekend so camp made perfect sense. The ceremony and reception took place on a Friday and then guests enjoyed a field day of activities on Saturday. The location inspired their vintage/outdoor theme for a joy-filled weekend their friends and family would never forget.

11

Morgan and Raun tied-the-knot in front of 98 guests in the open-air chapel at Camp Sky Ranch. Guests waved wildflowers as the bride entered to Tom Petty’s Wildflowers playing on a record player. It was a fresh and fun way to have everyone be a part of the ceremony. “Even though it was about Raun and me, it felt like it was really a celebration for everyone,” Morgan explained.

12

Morgan and Raun rode away on a very special motorcycle. “The motorcycle we left on was significant because it was a project that Raun restored in honor of his late father,” said Morgan. “His father was never able to finish it while he was living. Riding away on his bike allowed us to have a little piece of him there.”

13

A few of the bride and groom’s friends, dressed as Boy Scouts, kicked off the day’s festivities by acting as “camp leaders.” Guests were encouraged to participate in camp-style events, such as a raising the flag ceremony, bugle playing and camp bell ringing - just to name a few.

Everywhere their guests turned there was a new detail to discover, from creative cocktails and a dinosaur wedding cake (decorated from Raun’s vintage dinosaur collection), to a wildlife themed seating chart, to local honey as favors. Guests danced the night away in the rustic dining hall and ended the evening by a bonfire reminiscing about the weekend they attended summer camp-with Morgan and Raun.

Defining

STYLE

Thoughts on styling and how it can help you in your wedding planning strategies.

WRITTEN & CREATED BY Abany Bauer PHOTOGRAPHY BY Ozzy Garcia

There are many local wineries that can provide a stunning backdrop and add to your styling. Check out local wineries: banner elk winery,

58

grandfather vineyard & winery, linville falls winery, raffaldini vineyards & winery (pictured), and roaring river vineyards.

An unruly bouquet filled with peonies, garden roses, viburnum, mock orange and golden rod fills the moment with echoes of European luxury. Stop by shady grove gardens and nursery to browse locally grown flowers that will work well with your style. Or schedule consultations with local floral designers desi’s floral design studio,

fuschia moss, millefleurs, log house florist, philosophy flowers, or shay brey to discuss your options.

57 There are certain buzz words floating about the industry these days - organic, ethereal, rustic, chic. But there is one word in particular that is sometimes easy to miss and hard to define: “Styling.” What is it? And how does it help you, as a bride? The terminology given to wedding styling leaves most brides curious, but also disconnected to the purpose and therefore its legitimacy.

59

Styling, in short, can be defined as “the way in which something is made, designed or performed.” This can cover many areas in the world of wedding planning to help you with your budget, your overall aesthetic, and the feel that you want guests to experience during the event. Still, the number one question remains: “Why do I need to hire a stylist when I can just design everything myself?” Though most brides have a clear idea of what they want for their wedding, having a professional walk you through the process and help with the design elements makes the planning more manageable and fun. Then upon the big day, you have expert hands by your side developing the look, while you get to enjoy the day being pampered, knowing that everything is being handled for you. Stylists are also great to work alongside your photographer. Often times the photographer is so consumed by all the candid, fast-moving m o ments that the details are hard to get placed just so and captured accordingly. Elisabeth & Tyler

august 31, 2013 - the inn at crestwood - boone, nc

A

fter getting engaged on top of a mountain, overlooking Lake Zurich and the Swiss Alps, Tyler and Elisabeth knew they wanted a beautiful mountain view as the backdrop for their wedding day. Elisabeth grew up in the High Country, just a few curvy miles away from the Inn at Crestwood, the perfect spot for their romantic summer wedding. Many special touches made the day come to life. The happy couple “buried the bourbon” to ensure great weather on their wedding day, a tradition to honor Tyler’s home state of Kentucky. Elisabeth w ore h e r m ot h e r ’ s l a pe l pi n wi th he r l ate bro the r ’s i ni ti al s i n he r dre s s , o ve r he r h ea rt a s her “ s o m e thing borrowed.” Guests enjoyed local craft beers from Tyler’s favorite breweries, and danced the night away to songs the couple collected from the guests’ reply cards. It was truly a perfect day to begin their happily ever after.

Meg and Andrew attended Appalachian State University and met through a campus ministry. When it came time to enter into wedded bliss, they knew that the High Country was the place to share their vows. They started with a vacant field off the Tanawha Parkway as a blank canvas for creating rich memories. A handmade entryway composed of old wooden doors and adorned with the proclamation “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad,” served as a backdrop and set the tone for the ceremony. Bright flowers and perfectly-paired, bold paper goods - created by the bride - were stunning reflections of the joy that God brought to Meg, Andrew, and the family and friends who shared in their celebratory day.

september 14, 2013 - rumple memorial presbyterian and westglow resort & spa - blowing rock, nc

h en C l a i re be ga n d re a m i n g a bo u t he r we d d i ng day, s he ke pt co mi ng back to t hree very distinct words to describe how she wanted the day to feel: unique, intimate and meaningful. Unique started with finding the location, which they knew had to be in Blowing Rock, a town near and dear to their hearts. They started on the historic, 100-year old stone sanctuary of Rumple Memorial, and ended in the Jeffersonian-style mansion of Westglow for the reception. The intimacy of the day was captured through the joy of friends and family being nearby to jump in and help. The bride, her aunts and mother contributed colorful nomadic textiles, grass cloths from Africa, and dozens of collected treasures to create 13 unique and very personal tablescapes. Family heirlooms and accents were everywhere, but especially at the reception, and made the entire wedding more meaningful. The finishing touches of delicate dahlias, hydrangea and garden roses by the ever-talented Fuchsia Moss. The day was filled with vibrant blue skies and gloriously perfect weather a true gift from the High Country. The dream wedding of Claire & Patrick was unique, intimate, and meaningful; and it all unfolded in Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

HISTORY UNFOLDS Claire & Patrick chose the 100-year-old stone chapel, with just the glowing flicker of a 30-branched candelabra lighting the path to their covenant promises.

Brittney & Bryan

august 24, 2013 - leatherwood mountains, ferguson, nc Bryan and Brittney met as students at Appalachian State University. When they decided to marry their thoughts immediately turned to the High Country as the setting for their wedding. Not far from Boone, Brittney and her sister grew up riding horses at Leatherwood Mountains. “As kids, my sister and I brought our horses to Leatherwood to trail ride, so it is full of great childhood memories for me,” she shared. The breathtaking views and pastoral valleys of this serene mountain retreat became the obvious choice for Brittney and Bryan when planning their High Country wedding. They took advantage of the Leatherwood Mountains incredible beauty and charming facilities to create their ‘rustic chic’ style wedding. Every detail had personal touches representing their laid-back personalities. Guests stayed at cabins on the property and they relaxed with signature drinks and lawn games. Brittney and Bryan set their wedding outdoors and included eclectic antiques, cowboy boots, and many other customized details.

Lisette & Eddie

october 10, 2013 - banner elk winery - banner elk, nc

F

or Lisette, a Florida native and one mildly obsessed with fall foliage, pumpkins and pinecones, an autumn season wedding was a no-brainer. When she and Eddie were searching for venues and discovered Banner Elk Winery’s natural elegance, they both knew they had found the perfect location to tie the knot and celebrate. Lisette peppered the wedding with creative DIY elements such as jars filled with delicious jams as a thank you to their guests; lining the ceremony aisle with seasonal pumpkins; and even marking the reception tables with chalkboards listing assorted varietal grape names. The result was a festive fall wedding, full of meaning and enjoyed by all. Their talented photographer, Ellen Gwin notably commented, “Working a lot of weddings, I have seen it all, but this was one of those particularly great ones that you don’t even want to leave when it is over. You feel like you have made new friends for life!”

It only gets b e t t e r. Ellen and Clayton’s wedding day reflected their Cinderella-style meeti n g w i t h the beauty of Chetola Resort as the setting, the wonderful weather as if sent by a fairy god-mother, and well-wishing friends and family helping to secure their wedded bliss. Ellen’s bouquet was comp o s e d of the same flowers and love knots that were carried by her own mother and mothe r - in - l a w o n their wedding days many years prior. Bridesmaids and groomsmen w e re strateg i c a l l y w o v e n o n b o t h s i d e s d u r i n g t h e c e r e m o n y a s a symbol of the way each person influenced the bride and groom. This story is a tried and true blessing - a day that is sure to stand out on the beautiful path of the rest of their lives. “Because let’s face it, life is the real story and we are so thankful that the wedding is just the first chapter of forever,” said Ellen.

Kristie & Trey

july 13, 2013 - laurel springs baptist church - boone, nc

W

hen we think about a High Country wedding, there are so many wonderful venues and lovely vendors to make all the pieces and elements of the day fall into place. But with so many couples making this little niche of the Blue Ridge Mountains a getaway or a destination wedding locale, often parts of the weddings are outsourced vendors from off the mountain. It’s truly a special feté when you find a bride and groom who literally use every vendor from within the High Country. Kristie and Trey are that couple. A native of Lewisville, NC, Kristie looked to Boone as her point of reference for all other wedding needs. Her gown came from Did Someone Say party? and Trey’s tux from South’s Clothiers. Stick Boy Bread Co. provided a decadent bird-embellished cake and Marie of Hair Craft provided fabulous hair and makeup. Even the entertainment boasted of Boone’s very own Digital DJs. The day floated by in confidence and without a hitch - except their own - thanks in part to the amazing local vendors who were entrusted with Trey and Kristie’s special day.

Farm Fresh The High Country is known for its fabulous cuisine. Whether from a local farmers’ market or a family-owned restaurant, it is easy to stumble upon farm-fresh and local fare. Many brides are opting for a farm-to-table menu to tempt tastebuds, and show off the High Country flavors to their guests. Rachael Mills Fletcher & Fletcher Photography

farm

to

table

There are more than 100 farms in an around the High Country. Several years ago, only a handful of people, most of them farmers, cared about that. Times have changed, and the concept of getting closer to our food has surpassed trend status and is gradually becoming the norm, even making its way into the wedding industry. Visit a local farmers’ market or step into a local grocery, and it’s clear that the move from mass-produced food to fare provided by local farmers has taken over. Among our favorite local caterers who can create farm-to-plate fare include: EAT CROW, FRUGAL GOURMET, GADABOUTS, HENRY’S GOOD FOOD, NEW PUBLIC HOUSE, and REID’S CATERING (see vendor directory on pg. 100 for more information).

local libations

Include local wines or brew in your menu from BANNER ELK WINERY, BLOWING ROCK ALE HOUSE, GRANDFATHER WINERY & VINEYARDS, LINVILLE FALLS WINERY, PRODUCE AND PROVISIONS, RAFFALDINI VINEYARDS, ROARING RIVER VINEYARDS, or WINE TO WATER.

What’s a North Carolina wedding without classic barbecue? LEATHERWOOD MOUNTAINS provides whole hog-pit cooked barbecue, or roasted salt & pepper chicken halves from locally grown hogs and chickens. Favored by locals, BANDANA’S and WOODLAND’S, are also great options for barbecue catering.
