A STEP FORWARD

zuela (Cetursa), or Gastón Streiger, (BMW Spain), among others. Aside from the sport there was plenty of partying. The organisers of the event made sure there was a schedule crammed with entertainment and no shortage of delicious culinary delicacies, plenty of champagne, the most distinguished luxury and, above all, a good atmosphere. The fun was guaranteed throughout this exceptional weekend which marked a turning point in making the Andalusian ski resort a top polo venue. As far as the polo itself was concerned, the spectacle was present over the two days of play. In the end the Jaeger-LeCoultre team was victorious, beating Casablanca by 9 goals to 4.5 in the final. The team of Jack Kidd, Hernán Pieres and Richard Fagan had more penetration over the last few metres than Casablanca, made up of Alejo Taranco, Gonzalo Muñoz Escassi and Carlos Piñal. Fortunately the sun put in an appearance on the field of play and remained until just after the final, when there was some light snowfall to provide the perfect end to a first-class competition. Previously the subsidiary final had been held, in which Santa María defeated Península by 7 goals to 6 in what was probably the most exciting match of the tournament. Mario Gómez for Santa María and George Meyrick for Península were the best players; the Englishman scored the best goals of the

weekend, taking the ball in the air and escaping the attentions of his opponents with great speed. After scoring the goal that levelled the match at 6-6, Nacho Domecq scored again to bring victory to his team, with no time left on the clock for Península to come back. The prize ceremony brought to a close a pioneering competition in Spain which intends to become a classic for many years to come.■

Santa María Polo Club are taking on a new challenge in their line of work as organisers of great sports events. On this occasion, and once again in close collaboration with the Andalusian Business Confederation (CEA), BMW, the Andalusian Tourist Board, the Andalusian Regional Government’s Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Sport and CETURSA, among others, the polo was taken onto the snow for the Jaeger-LeCoultre Snow Polo Cup 2010. The event received great media coverage and undoubtedly provided an economic boost for the industry. Thanks to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Snow Polo Cup 2010, Santa María Polo Club continues to make progress in its effort to hold polo competitions throughout the year and has now joined the snow polo circuit. Sierra Nevada will now be the prestigious host of this spectacular sporting discipline.
