GREEK ISLANDS July 25 ~ August 03, 2015

Stuart & Marty Malina

Cruise the Greek Islands with Harrisburg Symphony Maestro Stuart Malina and his wife Marty on the newest vessel in the Silversea family. The Silver Spirit offers the distinctive luxuries and celebrated lifestyle Silversea guests adore, plus enticing enhancements including the Asian-themed Stars Supper Club, an expansive 8,300-square-foot spa, a resortstyle pool, four whirlpools, and the largest suites in the Silversea fleet — 95% with private verandas.

Istanbul

Dikili

Istanbul, Turkey is one of the world’s most interesting cities. Cruise passengers get a striking view of the minaret-pierced skyline as the ship pulls into port. The treasures are plentiful here; visitors marvel at the great architectural triumph of the Blue Mosque, the glorious frescoes and mosaics of the Chora Church and the amazing Grand Bazaar.

This small seaport serves as the port for the hilltop city of Pergamon. The outstanding attraction in this ancient city is the ruins of a once-great library. Passengers who choose to stay in Dikili might visit the market or stroll the charming streets.

Ephesus/Kusadasi Ephesus was the capital of Asia Minor during the time of the Roman Empire, and now it is one of the world’s most impressive and best-restored archaeological sites. Walk the marble-paved streets and see the spectacular ruins of the Temple of Hadrian, the Library of Celsus, the house where the Virgin Mary spent her last days, and the amphitheater where St. Paul once preached. Kusadasi is a Turkish resort known for its extensive marina and miles of beaches, but it is also famed for the ancient treasures just minutes away: Miletus and its Greco-Roman theater and Temple of Athena, Didyma and its Temple of Apollo, and, most glorious of all, the marble city of Ephesus.

Patmos An impressive stone monastery dominates most of the island of Patmos, one of the smallest inhabited islands in the Aegean Sea. Of all the beaches, the fine-sand shores of Psili Ammos are top-rated. Shop for Patmian embroidery, famous for its elegant craftsmanship.

Santorini

Rhodes

Santorini embraces all that has made the Greek Islands legendary -- splendid beaches, unparalleled architecture, dramatic cliffs and quaint villages. Ride a donkey up the trail to the city of Thira or take a cable car. The views from Thira, set atop a ledge overlooking the sea, are stirring. Most ships allow just enough time here to wander the streets, admire the churches and browse the shops and cafes.

This island is celebrated for its natural beauty and delightful climate. Its most outstanding site is the Acropolis of Lindos; take a donkey trek to the site and pass charming whitewashed cottages on the way. The island’s capital city is ringed with more than two miles of 15th-century walls. Most excursions include the medieval castle and Turkish market.

Mykonos

Athens (Piraeus)

In Greek mythology, Mykonos was the site of the battle between Zeus and the Titans and the island was named in honor of Apollo’s grandson, Mykons. Composed primarily of granite, this little town with its windmills and brilliant whitewashed houses is a photographer’s dream. Many visitors spend time wandering the winding streets or browsing the boutiques. Mykonos is also renowned for its diverse nightlife and beautiful beaches.

Piraeus is the port to Athens -- the birthplace of Western civilization. The first stop on most excursions is the Parthenon on the hill of the Acropolis. The Acropolis also is the site of the Propylea, the Temple of the Wingless Victory, the Erechtheion and the Acropolis Museum. A drive down Syngrou Avenue offers an impressive view of the Arch of Hadrian and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. The National Archeological Museum houses a rich collection of antiquities.
