THE 3RD ANNUAL NATIONAL HBCU PRE-LAW SUMMIT AND LAW EXPO 2016

Paying It Forward: The HBCU Way September 23, 2016 Greetings and Welcome Future Lawyers and Friends! It is truly a blessing and honor to once again host the 3rd Annual National HBCU Pre-Law Summit and Law Expo - and this time in Atlanta, Georgia – a city that is well-known for its rich African American culture, its historic role in the American Civil Rights Movement, and its famous Black colleges in the Atlanta University Center. I want to congratulate each of you for taking the time and the initiative to register for and show up to this momentous event, an event especially designed just for you – HBCU students and graduates with an interest in going to law school and becoming lawyers. The time you take to participate in this event is a necessary investment in your future. Know that every single law student and attorney who is participating in this event is doing so because they genuinely believe in YOU and believe in paying it forward. They are willing to sacrifice their time, talent and energy to make a deposit into and invest in you – future members of our beloved legal profession – one that is in tremendous need of greater diversity. I am particularly proud of The National HBCU Pre-Law Summit because it was created by an HBCU graduate for HBCU students and graduates in order to fill a void by starting something that didn’t currently exist and providing a special forum for those from that particular collegiate experience. This event provides participants with a truly impactful, high-quality and game-changing information and resource-sharing, networking and connection-building event. When people ask me what makes this event so unique and different from other pre-law events, I share that this event has heart. The HBCU experience in this country is quite special because it enables African American students to work towards their academic goals in a family-like environment without having to worry about people questioning their abilities simply because of their race – which is something they will unfortunately face once they step out of that protective environment. I go on to share that at this event we not only provide the information that HBCU students really need regarding what it takes to be truly excellent, competitive and strategic in law school admission, the law school experience and legal careers; but we also directly address those additional challenges, issues and concerns that HBCU graduates face in making the tough transition into law school – and particularly entering into predominantly White institutions (PWI) – which for me was a major and dramatic culture shock that I was in no way prepared for. We also discuss the considerations for those who are thinking about attending one of the six HBCU law schools in our nation that each have incredible missions and legacies and continue to serve a very important role in advancing diversity in legal education and in the legal profession - now and in the future. And we are so excited to actually have the deans from ALL of these law schools present this weekend to talk about their institutions. What a treat! In addition, we are grateful that so many of the speakers, presenters, moderators and panelists at this event are also proud graduates of HBCUs and have a special sensitivity to and understanding of the added difficulties and burdens one must take on as African Americans attending PWIs and entering into one of the least diverse major professions in 6

our nation. They will openly, honestly and thoughtfully share their personal experiences and hard-learned strategies for navigating through and succeeding in these rough and bumpy waters. As an HBCU graduate and a first-generation college graduate, law student and lawyer, the importance of the Black college experience in my life is not lost on me. The one thing that I think it impressed upon me more than anything was my urgent social responsibility to give back to my community and my understanding that my success was more than about me achieving my personal goals but also helping others. It helped further instill that belief in paying it forward – and that is why we are all here this weekend. We are all giving our best to you - and ask only one thing in return – that you do the same for others. When I reflect on my pre-law school experiences, I most remember the fact that I didn’t have a solid support system of like-minded peers who had similar goals and aspirations of pursuing law degrees, I didn’t know any law students and lawyers who could help guide me through the process, and I didn’t have a clue about what law schools were looking for outside of whatever I could glean from reading their application packages and view books at face value. If you are currently in a similar situation, everything has changed for you by attending this event this weekend. This is a brand new day of possibilities. You now have access to other like-minded peers with high aspirations – not just from your school but from around the country. You now have the opportunity to meet law students and lawyers who truly care about your future and want to see you successfully get into law school, pass the bar and pursue a meaningful career. You now have people “in the know” who work in law school admissions environments everyday to help demystify the admissions and financial aid landscape. Although this event is free, it is truly priceless – and no dollar amount or entry fee can be affixed to the purchase of a ticket. If you fully engage and take complete advantage of all this experience offers to you, it can and will change the game for you. The value of that is something money can’t buy. We will tell you the harsh realities of the tough educational endeavor and professional pursuit you have chosen, while at the same time barraging you with positive messaging, role models and solid advice to reassure you that you can do this – and you can go even farther and do even better than we did without the benefit of this event. The only thing that both I and those participating ask from you – is that you commit to paying it forward. Help someone else, pass it along. It is what we believe in at the National HBCU Pre-Law Summit because it is the “HBCU way” – plain and simple. The Black college environment with its trials and triumphs further reenergized in me the spirit and desire to care about and give back to the community and to make sure that I was there for those coming behind me. My prayer is that this event will have that type of impact on you – so that you will remember that not forgetting those who want to follow in your footsteps is the only way we can ALL move forward. To me, you are my family, and I genuinely want to see each and every one of you reach your highest potential and receive the types of worthy opportunities that can build you up and fully utilize the amazing talent that you possess inside of you. No matter what – be your absolute best and always consider ways you can give back to and contribute in every environment you are a part of to make things better for those around you and especially for those coming behind you. You, your actions and your contributions all make a difference – every single day. On behalf of all of the extraordinary people who are here for YOU at this weekend’s event, we welcome you to law school and the legal profession. As you climb the ladder of success, we encourage you to continue to embrace and pull up others who choose to follow your path as you achieve the various milestones in this journey to fulfilling your goals. Remember HBCU student and graduate, you must - it’s the HBCU way. Wishing you the very best of good success in all of your endeavors,

Evangeline

Greetings Future Attorneys and Legal Scholars: As the 35th President of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (“GABWA”), it is my pleasure to welcome you to my hometown for the Third Annual National HBCU Pre-Law Summit and Law Expo. I commend Evangeline M. Mitchell, Esq., Founder and Executive Director, for her vision and commitment to helping HBCU students pursue legal careers. In 1981, a group of phenomenal African American women founded GABWA, a unique voluntary bar association, to focus on women and children’s issues, increase black female representation in the judiciary and in public offices, and take a proactive stance on political issues. Subsequently, in May 1983, GABWA established the GABWA Foundation, Inc. (the “Foundation”), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, that facilitates GABWA’s charitable and educational activities. Together, GABWA and the GABWA Foundation, Inc., strive to fulfill GABWA’s mission: to nurture, support, and galvanize the power of Black women attorneys; advocate for women and children; and empower our communities. As you embark on your journey into this noble profession, you will meet numerous attorneys, judges, law school deans, and law professors who will provide you with words of encouragement and wisdom. I, too, will be among them with words of advice and guidance. In closing, I hope that you will not only enjoy the Summit and Law Expo, but also consider joining GABWA as we work to galvanize the community to change Georgia and the World. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of service to you. Yours in Service,

Janet C. Scott

Greetings Attendees! I am pleased to greet you as the 33rd chairman of the National Bar Association, Young Lawyers Division. The National Bar Association is the largest and oldest organization of black judges, lawyers, and law students in the world—with a network of over 60,000 members in the United States, Canada, Morocco, and the Caribbean. Our Young Lawyers Division is devised of members under 40 years of age, and/or less than 10 years of legal practice. As a double HBCU alumna (SC State University and Howard Law), I am proud to attend the National HBCU Pre-Law Summit and that the NBA YLD is an organizational sponsor. I know first-hand that there is a unique gift that HBCU-educated young people bring to the practice of law. Now, as much as ever, we need Black lawyers to continue the pursuit of justice in our nation and around the world. From voting rights to criminal justice reform and judicial representation, lawyers who are committed to justice are needed to build upon the gains our forebearers and continue to fight today. We send special congratulations to Executive Director Evangeline Mitchell and all who have worked hard over the past year to bring this event to fruition. Thank you for your commitment to HBCU students, alumni, and our legal profession. I hope that each attendee takes full advantage of all of the knowledge offered to you and network with the wonderful group assembled this weekend. Once you enter law school, I encourage you to join the National Bar Association— student membership is free. We wish you all of the best for this upcoming year. THE 3RD ANNUAL NATIONAL HBCU PRE-LAW SUMMIT AND LAW EXPO 2016

September 22, 2016 Greetings, My name is Gennelle Chatman. I am a second-year student at Thomas M. Cooley Law School and I am elated to serve as your 2016-2017 Pre-Law Director. The role of the Pre-Law Division is two-fold: First, to provide future law students with a wide array of resources and opportunities devoted to skill building, networking, and LSAT preparation. Second, and most importantly, is simply to REPRESENT. Our aim this year is to enhance representation. To open our doors and allow those who will come after to observe and interact with Black and Brown bodies in a space historically devoid of them. The Pre-Law Division intends to plant the seeds necessary to produce “culturally responsible Black and minority attorneys who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community,” as has been our noble goal since 1968. The benefits of membership in NBLSA are many and can be realized even before matriculating to law school. The Pre-Law Division is committed to providing access to vital resources to help smooth the transition to law school and improve candidate visibility in a highly competitive professional market. For $10 per year, whether you are still in college, preparing for the LSAT, or still deciding your next steps, we can help steer you in the right direction. While my purpose is to welcome you, I would also like to charge you with the task of preparing now for your future endeavors. This means devoting yourself to your studies, serving your community, and upholding the tenets of our distinguished organization. By joining the ranks of the Pre-Law Division, you will be taking the first steps down a path forged by thousands of young, gifted, and Black men and women with goals not unlike your own. You will become members of the largest student-run organization in the nation, but you are already and will always be the hope and the dream of our ancestors. May your year be outstanding, purpose-driven, and filled with light. In Service,

K. Gennelle Chatman, M.S. National Director of Pre-Law Thomas M. Cooley Law School

67 trophies (so far) In 2016, our students were crowned national champions in the American Association for Justice Student Trial Advocacy Competition, and we became the only East Coast law school to win regional contests sponsored by both the AAJ and the Texas Young Lawyers Association. It wasn’t the first time in the school’s 10-year history that our Trial Team and Moot Court Board dazzled in competition, and we suspect that it won’t be the last. Coached by accomplished practitioners who include our faculty and alumni, these budding advocates are helping us build a legacy of excellence with astonishing speed.

Janet C. Scott

A TOP LEGAL EDUCATION IN BOTH THEORY AND PRACTICE. A great legal education balances theory in the classroom with experience from the real world. And at SLU LAW, the real world is everywhere you turn. Our downtown center is right where the courts are. Our Dean is a former Chief Justice of the Missouri Supreme Court. And a strong network of SLU LAW alumni are down the street, across the state, and around the country.

DON’T JUST STUDY THE LAW, EXPERIENCE IT.

A VIBRANT AND DIVERSE COMMUNITY

Choosing to come to Southwestern was one of the best decisions I ever made. I woke up every day excited to get to school, excited to see my colleagues and my professors, and excited to learn. I wanted to belong to a supportive community, and that is exactly what I found at Southwestern.” – Vivian Rivera ‘14, Full-Time Day Program Attorney at Law, Early, Maslach & Hartsuyker
