Frankel is the founder and CEO of Skinnygirl, a lifestyle brand offering practical solutions to women. Day will be on hand throughout the weekend to talk about her hit TV show, her design inspiration and her life. Parade of Playhouses A new feature of the 2019 Home & Lifestyle Show will be the Parade of Playhouses sponsored by Masonite. HBA members will build playhouses to be displayed during the Greater Kansas City Home and Lifestyle Show. Attendees can bid on these playhouses via an online auction and proceeds from the auction will benefit Veterans Community Project (VCP). The VCP will be showcasing one of its tiny homes at the show. Missouri Legislative Day HBA members chartered a bus to Jefferson City on Wed., Feb. 6 for the HBA’s annual Legislative Day. The group met with various legislators throughout the day to introduce constituents and promote home builder legislation. The Fairness to Homeowners Act (HB 483), sponsored by Rep. Dan Stacy (R-Blue Springs), would improve the permit and inspection process for home builders and homeowners in Missouri. When discussing this bill with area Senators and Representatives, the group received many positive responses to the bill. Legislators understand that time consuming and costly inconsistencies in the building process delay residential development and that this legislation is an important step to future growth.

NAHB Elects Leadership for 2019 NAHB members elected four senior officers to top leadership positions within the Federation during the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas. With more than 700 affiliated state and local home builders associations and more than 140,000 members across the country, NAHB represents the interests of the nation’s housing professionals through advocacy, education and research. Taking the helm as NAHB’s Chairman of the Board this year is Greg Ugalde, a Connecticut builder and developer with extensive experience in the home building industry. Ugalde is president and chief legal officer of Torrington-based T&M Building Co., Inc., one of the state’s largest home builders. Since its founding in 1962, T&M has built more than 4,000 new homes in over 45 Connecticut communities for trade-up and first-time buyers. He is also the founder and owner of GFU Investments, LLC, a builder/developer minority-owned business that focuses on urban development and workforce housing. “A top priority this year will be to address ongoing housing affordability concerns,” said Ugalde. “On average, government regulation accounts for nearly 25% of the price of building a single-family home and more than 30% of the cost of a typical multifamily development. “We will urge federal policymakers to take appropriate actions to ease regulatory burdens in order to help put families in homes, create jobs and move the economy forward. We will also call on Congress to advance comprehensive housing finance reform and to adopt sensible workforce development and immigration policy that will help our industry fill open jobs.” Also moving up on the association’s leadership ladder during NAHB’s Las Vegas board meeting was Dean Mon, a New Jersey-based builder and developer with more than 30 years of experience in the home building industry. He was elected as First Vice Chairman of the Board. Mon is president of the D.R. Mon Group, Inc., which specializes in the development and construction of green urban living projects throughout New Jersey. Since 1985, the company has created communities in Morris, Hunterdon, Union, Hudson and Monmouth Counties. John “Chuck” Fowke, a Tampa, Fla.-based custom home builder with 40 years of experience in the home building industry, was elected as Second Vice Chairman of the Board. Fowke is founder and president of Homes by John C. Fowke, Inc. His company has built hundreds of luxury homes throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Jerry Konter joined the NAHB leadership ladder with his election as Third Vice Chairman of the Board. A Savannah, Ga.-based home builder with 40 years of experience in the home building industry, Konter founded Konter Quality Homes in 1977. His company is one of the largest home building firms in Savannah and has established 17 communities and built more than 2,000 homes throughout the local metro area. 2018 NAHB Chairman Randy Noel, from LaPlace, La., remains on the leadership ladder as Immediate Past Chairman. Noel is president of Reve Inc., a custom home building firm that has developed more than 1,000 custom homes in the greater New Orleans area. Rounding out the association’s leadership is NAHB Chief Executive Officer Jerry Howard, from Washington, D.C. Howard heads up a professional staff of more than 240 working out of the National Housing Center in Washington. He has served as the association’s CEO/EVP since February of 2001. The building was constructed and first occupied in early 1979 and has had only patch-work modifications over the last 40 years. I am excited about transforming the interior into a 21st century, first class office space. The HBA staff has moved temporarily to

the lower level and meetings during the remodel will be held in the lower level conference room. There will be some short-lived disruptions on the lower level as we redo the lower entry hall and stairway system. The approved budget for the construction, new furniture, moving of offices downstairs and back up, relocation of the computer and phone equipment and other low voltage wiring is just under $600,000.

Fun Will Not Be Prohibited! Kansas City’s history has included characters who operated on both sides of the law. One of the most famous was Tom Pendergast who controlled Kansas City and Jackson County from 1925 to 1939. Wikipedia describes him: “his promotion of Kansas City as a wide-open town with every kind of vice imaginable, combined with his professed compassion for the poor and very real role as city builder, made him bigger than life, difficult to characterize.” Join fellow HBA members at the annual NAHB BUILD-PAC fundraiser on April 11 at Tom’s Town. The Tom’s Town website explains the name of their business: “Pendergast started as a saloon keeper and the founder of a wholesale liquor company. Under Tom, Kansas City ignored Prohibition and emerged as the ‘Paris of the Plains.’ Money, jazz, and spirits flowed in the open. When asked how he justified ignoring Prohibition, Pendergast quipped, ‘The people are thirsty.’ Today the people are still thirsty. Tom’s Town satisfies that thirst by producing premium craft spirits. You can taste our high standards and attention to detail in every sip of the gin, vodka, and bourbon we make.” BUILD-PAC contributions will be accepted during the evening, while we sample products of the distillery, tour the building and enjoy an evening of camaraderie among HBA friends.
