Our aim as a school is to provide students with academic, creative and sporting opportunities which will enable them to develop as individuals who not only achieve their true potential but are prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. We have high expectations of our students in terms of academic progress and behaviour. This is strongly reflected in the school’s long standing strong performance in external examinations: both at A level and GCSE the school continues to be one of the highest performing schools in Doncaster. We are also extremely proud of the school’s outstanding quality of care, support and guidance. As a school we welcome and celebrate differences and provide a curriculum which meets students’ needs and enables them to make

The Hayfield School knows that parental contribution in school is crucial and therefore we strive to develop strong links between home and school. We welcome visits from prospective parents and students from within the school’s catchment area or beyond. Therefore, if you do wish to visit simply contact the school to arrange a date and time. Enhance young people’s understanding of the world of work and career pathways, in the context of the needs of the local and the global community.

Encourage positive values and a sense of value judgment in respect of morals, ethics, and spiritual values. Maximise the use of the facilities on-site, within finance available, for the general benefit of the community. Create a happy and positive partnership between students, staff, parents and the community. To seek co-operation with other educational bodies to raise standards for all. The broad aims listed are not in any rank order education is concerned with all of these. In essence, we seek to prepare our young people of today for today’s rapidly changing global community.

Care, guidance and support are outstanding. The school’s arrangements to ensure students’ safety and wellbeing are rigorous. There is a well established tutorial system and students are clear that they are well supported and always have someone to turn to, who will treat them with respect. Teachers and support staff monitor the needs and progress of vulnerable students and those with learning difficulties and/ or disabilities very carefully, and work closely with parents to resolve difficulties. THE CURRICULUM The curriculum at Hayfield is both challenging and wideranging. It is delivered through a variety of teaching processes and provides variety and interest to all students. We operate a two-year Key Stage 3 and three-year Key Stage 4. This enables students to follow a broad and balanced curriculum whilst maximising their achievement.

We offer an A level Sixth Form where students usually follow three or four AS courses in Year 12 and if successful follow these through to A2 in Year 13. All areas of the curriculum offer A level courses and in addition, courses such as Critical Thinking and General Studies may be offered to students.

At Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8) students follow the National Curriculum subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, French, German, History, Geography, Technology, Art, Music, Drama, Physical Education, Religious Education, Personal Development.

Hayfield offers many extra curricular opportunities which are very popular and well attended. We also have regular timetabled lessons of enrichment where all students take part in activities outside the normal curriculum. Students are encouraged to follow their interests and experience new activities.

At the end of Year 8 students make informed choices as to the courses they study in Key Stage 4. Options are tailored to meet the needs of the individual student. All students follow a common core of English, Maths, Science, ICT and non-examinable subjects in PE, RE and PD. Students then opt for further studies in Business, Creative, Humanities, Modern Foreign Languages, Sport and/or Technology.

6

Information Evenings are held to inform parents of choices or

raise awareness on issues. Every Year Group has a Parents’ Evening where students and their parents can talk to staff about their progress. The curriculum remains under regular review to ensure we respond to the changing needs of students and the external influences from the work place and society.

Students speak highly of the very impressive extra curricular activities on offer and school data shows there is high take-up in a range of these, including sports. They add that the current personal, social and health education programme and also citizenship are very effective in ensuring that they are aware of issues associated with the problems of bullying and racism. As they say, ‘We learn about equality and how everyone should be treated the same’. OFSTED

It is the intention of the school to provide the best possible education for all students. Students who may require, or who are entitled to, access arrangements for external examinations are assessed within the school by the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO).

The SENCO has responsibility for identifying and monitoring students with disabilities or learning difficulties and works in close liaison with the teaching staff, Year Tutors, the Learning Mentor, Learning Support Assistants and our local primary schools. We also strive to carry out our duty in line with the Equality Act to ensure that all students are treated equally. Every student is unique. All students have particular strengths, needs, and goals. Most students will require support at one time or another in order to reach their potential. We aim to reduce and remove inequalities and barriers to learning which may exist by responding to individual student needs so that all students have equal access to all the learning and wider development opportunities offered by the school. Our Student Support Services team are there to ensure a more coherent approach to student welfare and wellbeing. In addition to this, there exists a large number of clubs and opportunities held after school for students to partake in. These include a variety of sport-related clubs as well as those linked to school productions and concerts etc.

ATTENDANCE Good attendance underpins all academic progress for our students. We encourage students and parents to keep all absence to a minimum and to this end we do not authorise holidays taken in term time. Further details are available on our website or by request to the school. The Attendance Officer is meticulous in checking daily attendance registers; parental notes; patterns of unusual absence; and so forth. The school seeks parental support in notifying the school of absence and supplying prompt authorisation of any absence. Authorised absences include: illness covered by medical or parental note, authorised absence agreed by school with parents in special circumstances, work experience and residential courses etc, university interviews and job interviews. When a student returns to school following an absence, it is a statutory requirement that a note confirming the reason for the absence is provided.

12

This is in addition to any telephone conversation, which may have occurred in advising the school of an absence. The school’s Attendance Officer will contact parents when a child is not in school and parents have not informed us of a reason. In addition, the school’s Attendance Welfare Officer will work closely with students and their family to offer support when an ongoing attendance issue has been identified.
