An International Collaboration

H

awai‘i and Japan have always had a special connection, what better way to further honor those connections than through a musical exchange! In the spirit of friendship and in a celebration of music, HYS students and students from Japan will collaborate in stunning special performances, including five Junior Orchestras from Hawai‘i sister cities and a Ukulele Junior Orchestra from Kanazawa. The collaboration came together with the help of Hawai‘i Tourism Japan and was further cultivated through HTJ’s long-standing fellowship with HYS board member, Jake Shimabukuro. “We believe the relationships fostered through tourism and unique cultural experiences only makes Hawai’i and Japan’s special relation even stronger,” said Mitsue Varley of HTJ. “Given the circumstances around the pandemic, it is even more important to showcase a message that music connects the world.” The relationship with the ukulele group is one that HTJ nurtured prior to the gala, helping to bring local youth leaders to Japan to collaborate with the Ishikawa Ukulele Group last summer. What started with a Skype communication between the young people grew into composing a song together—and then to their eventually playing together at an event in Kanazawa, Japan. In a similar spirit, Mitsue hopes that the student connections now made through the collaboration with HYS will extend well beyond Nā Mele, furthering an ongoing cultural exchange of music and aloha.
