CPD Booklet 2017/18

Welcome to the Havering Adult College 2017/18 CPD programme. We have attempted to provide a comprehensive programme, however, if there are any specific training needs you think you may have, please tell your line manager. As a professional in the post-compulsory sector your belief in and commitment to CPD will be evident and as a responsible provider we will endeavour to offer these opportunities to you free of charge throughout the year. We recommend these courses, delivered as part of our dedication to continuously improve the standards and quality of our service. Enrolment & Attendance It is essential that you enrol in advance for the sessions by phoning 01708 554016. Spaces are limited, and anyone turning up without enrolling will be turned away. Once you have booked, you will receive confirmation by email. Training sessions are divided into mandatory and advanced/optional opportunities for all staff. If no dates are suitable, then inform your line manager. Please make sure you attend on time on the day. Payment All CPD courses are free for you to attend. In addition, as a HAC staff member you can enrol on ONE free course per year from the prospectus as part of the College’s commitment to CPD, but you will not be paid to attend this. If you fail to successfully complete a course we are funding for you, you could become liable for the full fee. Attendance on mandatory courses is paid at the £9.50 training rate. Attendance on the Advanced Practitioner Workshops is not paid unless you have been mandated to attend by your CDM. Cancellations Please let us know as soon as possible if you are no longer able to attend a session as we may have a waiting list. Sessions can be cancelled by calling 01708 554016. Please note that if you take a space but then do not turn up, or if you cancel with less than 24hrs notice, you will be charged the standard cancellation fee of £95 or the full course fee as advertised (whichever is the greater).

And finally We recognise that you might wish to attend external CPD opportunities that you have identified. For these, your line manager will decide, as per the Staff Development Policy, how much the College will be able to contribute. This will be dependent on the level of benefit to the Service, our learners and your role. This does not include payment to attend. The course details are correct at the time of publication, but we reserve the right to change venue, dates and times, if necessary. Most courses carry a maximum number of participants, so please book early to avoid disappointment. We also reserve the right to cancel a course if the minimum number of participants is not reached.

Chasing Outstanding Teaching & Learning This workshop is led by an experienced Ofsted inspector, and will explore the notion of what ‘good and outstanding’ teaching, learning and assessment actually looks like in action, as well as strategies to ensure that an observer will see just how good you are. Taking into account what observers need to see and indeed can see, this course helps you to avoid the little pitfalls that can prevent managers or inspectors from seeing how well you have planned, and how well you have delivered any given session. This hugely successful course has previously been delivered to teachers and managers at a range of Local Authority and Further Education Colleges – don’t miss out on your chance to join in. 26/02/2018

Becoming The Assertive Teacher This interactive workshop is for those teachers who want to develop aspects of their classroom management techniques. Fun and engaging, you will be guided to explore a range of assertive delivery strategies that can help support your approach to teaching and learning, as well as helping you build your confidence. We know that teachers lead the class dynamically and hold court over their learners – but not everyone feels able to deliver like that, and actually – why should they? This course allows you to examine your own style of engagement with the learners, and asks reflective questions whilst providing an array of hints, tips and practical examples of how to remain in charge without becoming aggressive, or indeed losing your cool and your confidence completely. 27/04/2018
