Haven: What inspired you to pursue a real estate license in the middle of a hugely successful MMA career? Iaquinta: I actually got injured, and it was kind of up in the air whether this injury would be a career ender or not. So I woke up one day, and thought, what the heck am I going to do with myself? I’d just had surgery and I had bought a house a year or two before that, and I remembered the process, it was an easy process for me. I actually ended up buying the first house that I saw. In my head, I was like everyone’s as easy as me, it was an easy thing to do. I enjoyed looking online, and seeing what I could afford. Watching on TV, it looked really easy, you just show people some houses and they pick one. It was a lot harder than I thought it was… I got my license pretty fast, and was able to get into a 75-hour course in New York State very quickly, passed the test on my first try, and got out there, and realized how hard it is! But eventually I got my first deal, and once I got my first deal they all started rolling in. That’s how I found myself in the real estate and sales business. HAVEN: What did you find most difficult about the transition to real estate? Iaquinta: Really just doing my first deal, it was uncharted territory. I was never in sales.. It was probably just getting the first deal done and learning the business of sales, learning how to be a salesperson. I have a real connection with everyone I work with, and really want the best for them. The adjustment was just the process of showing people houses, and making it happen. HAVEN: What lessons or traits from your time spent as an MMA Fighter do you apply to your second career as a Real Estate Agent? Iaquinta: I feel like I just work harder than anybody, any other agents out there. When you’re about to fight in a cage in the UFC, you work super hard, because you know if you don’t work hard, you’re not going to be at your best, and it’s not a good day in the office when you get beat up. I always hung my hat on being the hardest working MMA fighter, and I transfer that right over to real estate. So definitely my work ethic... The people that I work with, they either are my friends, or they quickly become my friends, because they see that I’m pretty genuine, I tell it how it is... I’m not going to say something just to get a deal done, I’m going to do what’s best for my client. HAVEN: As someone who Has Competed in the biggest Stages of the UFC, you’ve reached the highest level in your first career. What are your goals/aspirations for your second career? Iaquinta: There’s definitely a goal as far as houses I want to sell in a certain year, but really, it’s my reputation. I feel I gained a great reputation in MMA for speaking my mind, being an honest person, really working as hard as I can, even in tough fights, I grinded it out to the end. I think it’s the same way in real estate. It’s always doing the right thing, always being honest. I want to do right by my clients, and my reputation is everything. I really want to have a good reputation, and the way to do that is doing the best for my friends and clients. HAVEN: How have you adjusted to the craziness of the market throughout this past year plus, with all the changes from the pandemic? Iaquinta: Just really doing the best I can, and adapting. I can’t control the regulations of showing houses. Now everything’s pretty much back to normal, but for a while, you had no control over it. All you could do is the best that you could… There’s always a way to get it done, you just got to be creative and think of a way to make it happen. I bought a rental property during the pandemic, so I got first-hand knowledge from myself on how to find a good deal, negotiate, and navigate through coronavirus while purchasing property. I think that gave me a real head up, and got me to relate to these buyers much more. On the sales side, it’s a great time to sell a house right now. You want to be able to show everybody a house who wants to see it. You want to get eyes on it, that drives up the value. The more eyes you get on it, the more offers you get, the higher the price goes for the seller. Through coronavirus,

every buyer that was interested, we’re making it possible for them, going out of our way making sure that every buyer who wants to see it, gets to see it. HAVEN: What area are you currently selling in right now? I’m currently selling in Long Island, and Long Beach. HAVEN: Tell me a little bit about Long Beach. Iaquinta: Long Beach is a great little town, it’s a very beach-like community. There are some of the nicest hidden beaches, I think, in the country. When people think New York, they think New York City, they don’t think beach community. But in the summer, the boardwalk is packed. There’s a beautiful boardwalk that they have, there’s restaurants and bars. Long Beach and Long Island are one of the more unique places in the country. There are a ton of little bungalows, with a really cool vibe down there. Since Hurricane Sandy, a lot of the houses there have been renovated, they’ve been lifted, and the prices of housing in Long Beach has skyrocketed, because it’s so desirable, just because it’s so unique. There’s nowhere anywhere around here where you’re going to find a place like Long Beach. HAVEN: The market in the New York area has been wild lately. How’s it been in Long Beach? Iaquinta: This house I put on the market, it had five offers, well over asking price. A couple offers came in at asking price. No one in this market can think they’re going to put an offer in below asking price and get considered. There were some all cash offers, there were some offers that were contingent on the appraisal. Houses are having a tough time appraising, because people are putting in offers so high. They end up agreeing to pay the difference in the appraisal in cash. That’s how wild the market is in Long Beach… Long Beach is definitely somewhere that is so desirable for anyone that enjoys the beach, or is a young person, young couple. There are so many fun restaurants and bars, it’s a great life to live on Long Beach. HAVEN: A lot of athletes struggle to find a second passion away from sports. What do you think made you different? Iaquinta: I think I got kind of lucky that I bought a house right before I got injured, and how I fell into it. I had a few coaches in the mentors that were big into real estate investing, and they always took me under their wing, and stressed the importance of investing in real estate, and how it is an investment… I think it’s really the people that I’ve surrounded myself with, the people that really cared about me and made sure that I knew there was a life after fighting. And then I kind of fell into it too. I’m really blessed to find myself in this position.

Al Iaquinta: Long Beach’s Fighter Turned Realtor The real estate market is an absolute frenzy right now, and it helps to have a real estate agent who can take the punches this crazy market is going to provide. Chances are, there aren’t many real estate agents alive who can take the punches, and dish them out, like Al Iaquinta can. Al Iaquinta is a former UFC lightweight fighter, who is wellknown in the mixed martial arts community for his hard-working nature and his toughness in the octagon. Following an illustrious career fighting against some of the biggest names in the sport, including competing against Khabib Nurmagomedov in the lightweight championship, Iaquinta has moved on to selling homes. He now is a real estate agent working out of the Long Beach area of New York. We caught up with Al to learn a little more about how he pivoted to real estate, what his experiences in the octagon of UFC provided him with, and why real estate in Long Beach is more desirable than ever.

HAVEN: Are people surprised when they learn their real estate agent is a legendary UFC fighter? How have you found the response to your career transition from the general public? Iaquinta: I’ve gotten some deals just because people don’t have a real estate agent, and they see me on TV or something, and they think why not go with this guy? He’s a Long Island homegrown guy, he’s worked really hard to become a top-ranked UFC fighter, and if I can become a top-ranked UFC fighter, I don’t think there’s anything in the world I can’t accomplish. That’s how I look at it, and I think a lot of people agree and think the same thing. They see my work ethic and the way I carry myself, so I think people are definitely more open to work with me. Sometimes yeah, they don’t know, but they realize, and they’re kind of shocked, and impressed. It’s great though, I enjoy every aspect of it. That’s great, congratulations on the career pivot Al, and it was great speaking with you.
