POOL OPEN The Board of Trustees has adopted the 2015/16 Keyholder/Casual User Agreement at its 27 Oct meeting. The revised agreement and application form are available from reception and online. Out of school hour access to the pool for keyholders will begin this week. Please check over the agreement carefully. The pool has been made available to the community but only if keyholders honour the agreement. Check carefully.

TAIOPENGA KAPA HAKA
Jack, Jacob and Jordan lead the haka during the performance during last Tuesday’s Taiopenga Kapa Haka celebration held at the Clubs. The time spent with Whaia Merehira Wills since Term 1 paid off with a very well presented performance. Poi, waiata and haka were on display and students enjoyed other groups performing after theirs. A brisk walk to Pollard Park for lunch and some brief play rounded off the day. The logistics of transporting the whole school to and from Blenheim was well supported by parents making it possible to participate without the almost $500 it costs to use a large bus. Your help is always very much appreciated. Special acknowledgement and thanks must be recorded for the hours of extra work Vicki Eden put in to making up all the new black school skirts worn for the first time by our tamāhine – they looked fabulous. TO THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE OF HAVELOCK – THANK YOU! The Gallery has now been open for a year – and we made it through our first winter. We couldn't have done it without the help and encouragement of the community, and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us. During our first year we've hosted a book launch and four of our artists have held exhibitions, with more planned in the next twelve months, over 14 730 visitors have come through the door to look at what Havelock had to offer, with a very gratifying number purchasing our artists' work. We've been delighted to host special events, and the children of Havelock School provided a wonderful ANZAC display. Not to be outdone, Havelock Preschool have also displayed their Recycled Man. And last but not least, The Gallery organised a group of eight very excited women to attend WOW in Wellington. All of our wonderful sponsors, artists and volunteers have helped to make Jo Downey's dream become a reality, and with all the new ventures opening in Havelock – proving beyond a doubt we're not a zombie town. Our heartfelt thanks also go to Pub Charities, for their kind donation of funds to pay for a heat pump, for which the volunteers in particular, are extremely grateful. It was a very cold winter! We’re also delighted to report we've made charitable donations to a number of organisations, all doing great work in our area. To this end, we've made cash donations to St John’s Ambulance, The Havelock Menzshed, Fit 'n Free Gym, St Peter's Church Community Kitchen and the Havelock Beautification Project. FOOD & NUTRITION POLICY (5.42) ADOPTED Even before the That Sugar Film (trailer) was screened to the thirty or so community folk last Wednesday night, the Board of Trustees had adopted the above policy. After being available for comment, with none being received, it was resolved to accept the revised policy with the updated links to the Food and Beverage Classification System in schools and ECE services www.fuelled4life.org.nz/about. Further discussion no doubt will take place as people are better informed about what is largely hidden in our food. Being aware is just the first step. The programme offers ceiling and under floor insulation at NO COST to eligible householders. You don’t have to own your home - if you meet the eligibility criteria, your landlord will be contacted to seek permission. What are the eligibility criteria? If you have a valid Community Services Card or Super Gold Card with CSC endorsement you meet the basic criteria. In addition to this, people with a health referral from their GP or with children or older people in their household are also prioritised: Community Services Card or Super Gold Card (with CSC endorsement) Health referral from your doctor OR household with children under 17 years or person aged 65+ years. NOVEMBER 10 ~ PARENT/TEACHER FORUM Just a wee heads-up to keep this date free - this is the date of the Term 4 Parent/Teacher evening to be held in the hall. The focus will be around Information Technology, the school’s move into the cloud, how pupils are beginning to use Microsoft’s Office 365 and in particular, a session for parents with John Parsons - see flyer below.

Did you know? Research has found that it is the number of times each day we consume sugary drinks or eat foods high in sugar that increases the rate of decay in our teeth. Foods and drinks which contain sugar increase the production of acid in our mouth which attacks and rots our teeth. It is therefore helpful for children to learn which are ‘anytime’ foods and drinks. Cheese, fruit, raw vegetables, nuts, unsweetened popcorn, milk and water are just some examples. REGULAR UPDATES FROM THE NELSON MARLBOROUGH COMMUNITY ORAL HEALTH SERVICE BLENHEIM & MARLBOROUGH MOBILE CLINIC 5209922 CHARTING THE FUTURE… Annually schools review their agreement with the government as regards their vision, goals and plans in response the needs of students and the broad wishes of their community. Havelock’s Board of Trustees too has spent some time looking carefully at its charter and goals. It now invites parents from the school community to a 90 minute session at the Captain’s Daughter to enjoin in a conversation about the school’s longer-term goals. To many this might sound daunting and fairly heavy going but given the ambience, locale and timeframe, you might care to venture out and join trustees to share a conversation around charting the future for Havelock’s youngsters.

UPDATING THE EDUCATION ACT 2 Nov 2015 Education Minister Hekia Parata announced six weeks of consultation to update the Education Act 1989. She is encouraging New Zealanders to have their say on proposed changes to the education system. This online consultation is now open and closes on Mon 14 Dec at 5pm. The update raises several ideas for change; raising achievement, helping schools/kura to focus on the things that matter most, better info to family/whānau and communities and how families can help, doing more to help families and whānau understand why decisions are made about education. Make your submission on the consultation website - you’ll will find a video of the Minister talking about the proposed changes and a copy of the discussion document. The Education Act update consultation page has more info on the update to the Education Act 1989.
