NAUMAI HAERE MAI At its first meeting of 2016 the Board of Trustees last week selected Spencer Kingi to fill the fifth parent representative position which had been vacant since around the middle of 2015. Spencer will continue till the elections in May when three of the five parent positions are again up for election for a three year term. Unfortunately his first meeting went a bit longer than usual (normally finishes around 21:30) but being the first since late November, it covered important end-of-year and start-up material. Welcome Spencer to a great wee school doing great things with great kids. Now is the time to consider whether supporting the school as a trustee like Spencer is something you might consider. a raft of newer parents who might think it is too soon or they don’t know enough, or perhaps that it is even a bit scary. Ask any trustee and they will tell you it is all of the above but that you are well supported, training is available and there is plenty of humour. The real and valued contribution you can give is the perspective of a parent who has a child attending the school. Please consider if you could do this for a term. The board adopted the common dates for this election and has selected a Returning Officer to get the ball rolling in due course. The Main Roll will close 4 May and nominations will be called/open from 6 May. Nominations will close 20 May with papers sent by 25 May - votes counted 9 June and the board taking office 10 June. Keep an eye out for nomination forms. are often a place that sleep deprivation becomes evident. Monday mornings can be very telling especially when Sunday night is viewed at home as a non-school night. As far as a weekend goes it is best if only Friday and Saturday nights are viewed as the weekend rather than Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Sunday night the school week routine should be the norm. Parents rightly place huge expectations on schools and teachers to educate their children. In comparison with home though, teachers and classrooms come a distant second and are very much the lesser of the educators and learning spaces your child encounters. When home and school work in tandem children are in the sweet spot ready for action, on a stable springboard, engaged and willing to take the risks inherent in all learning. Another point worthy of remembering now that school is underway again is that of screen time and screen habits. John Parson talked about this last year when visiting students, staff and parents. A few quick points made at the time… • No screens in bedrooms (modelled by mum and dad also) • When going to bed, the screen is also tucked up in bed being charged ready for a new day – just like juniors and seniors • Use an app to monitor/limit screen time and app usage

PARENT TEACHER MEETING The Board of Trustees discussed the format and timing of the initial gathering of parents, teachers and trustees for the year. Thursday 3 March was picked and the sequence thus; families bring their own tea to enjoy poolside following a swim from 5pm on then gathering in the hall at 6pm and at approx. 6:45 heading off to learning areas for further discussion. Whilst construction is not likely to be complete, no doubt parents will also be keen to have a look at progress. Individual learning conferences start 10 March. VOLUNTEERS FOR SCHOOL’S MUSSEL & SEAFOOD FESTIVAL STALL The calendar is running out of squares as this local festival draws near. The school runs a very successful seafood stall in keeping with the festival theme but of course it only happens because a crew of volunteers prior and on the day have made it happen. The school now is calling for about sixteen folk who can work a shift or two over the 8 hours of the festival. Please contact Mandy with your preferred timeframe and a schedule can be finalised. Phone the office (574 2106) with your name, number and hours. With the final drawings of the remodelled playscape by Canopy of Nelson imminent, the funds raised will supplement those in hand ready to start the ground work reshaping the area. HAVELOCK MUSSEL AND SEAFOOD FESTIVAL NEWS Planning for the twelfth Mussel Festival is now well under way and we are sure the public will be delighted with the changes made. The wider range of seafood available is just one of them and, in response to the public wish, ticket prices have been lowered. The Early Bird ticket price of adults ($25), 12-18 year olds ($15), Family ticket only costing $65 (two adults and two children) and children under 12 (accompanied by an adult) free will make this one of the lowest priced festivals around. We are also looking forward to seeing the costumes and masks that children under 16 come up with in the Mussel Outfit competition. Entry forms are available at schools or can be downloaded at http://www.havelockmusselfestival.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/ Entry is free and there are good prizes to be won. There is more to do in the Kidzone this year as well and the very popular mussel shell decorating is back. The Mussel Pot Mussel Hustle was enjoyed immensely last year and will make a return. This top town-style obstacle race also attracts prizes for the winning team. While resting from this fun and hilarity, cheer on your favourite entrant in the internationally recognized Kono NZ Mussel Opening competitions culminating with the Guinness Book of Records “Fastest 100” record breaking attempt. The entertainment is top class with our headline act Anika Moa. Endearing, funny and seriously skilled Mulletman supports as our MC, along with local group A Minor Thing and the everpopular Avidiva Girls returning. They really had the crowd up on its feet last year. We broke the excellent news in December that Michael Van de Elzen will be our celebrity Chef and it is great to welcome our own Chris Fortune back to the cooking marquee. These are just eight of the great reasons why you should be among the crowd at Havelock Mussel Festival 2016. EVENT MANAGEMENT CONTRACTOR Tenders are being sought for an Event Management Contractor for the annual Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival. The contractor would be responsible for sourcing entertainment, stalls, grounds layout, securing sponsors, obtaining licences, reporting to regular meetings with the Festival Committee. Initially a 12 month contract will be offered with the right of renewal for a further 2 years, if both parties are in agreement. Tenders close 5 April 2016, this would allow time for any interested parties to attend a festival prior to submitting a tender. The position would start on 1 June 2016.
