There has been lots happening off the field to coincide with the great work by Steve, his staff and the team who are in a great run of form. In the build-up to Christmas and over the festive period, we have some exciting games against local opposition to look forward to with the visit of Peterborough United (Tuesday 28/11), Exeter City (16/12), Northampton Town (Boxing Day) and Cambridge United (29/12) in the league. Following our thrilling 4-3 First Round victory over Tranmere Rovers, we now face Port Vale at The Lamex Stadium in the FA Cup Second Round on December 2nd. We all remember last season’s fantastic cup run so it would be great to see as many supporters as possible at these matches cheering the team on. Earlier in the year, we launched the Junior Boro Membership for our younger fans, and we are pleased to confirm we have scheduled the Christmas Party for Thursday 7th December, at Gravity Stevenage - our Junior Boro partner. All members get free access to the party, including the opportunity to meet First Team players and Boro Bear. There is still plenty of time to sign up as a member and enjoy the chance to visit Gravity, receiving all the benefits of being part of Junior Boro. From a commercial perspective, the launch of the Boro Business Club has been a success, with over 50 attendees at the last meeting. If you are interested in networking, then please do get in touch. ACADEMY G ood Afternoon and welcome to the Lamex Stadium and more academy notes. Firstly, as always the very best of luck to the gaffer and the team for this afternoon fixture v Lincoln City. From an academy perspective it has been an excellent week. Two more senior debuts on Tuesday night v Crystal Palace. David Hicks who has been with the club since U10’s followed in his father footsteps and made his EFL debut following impressive performances in the U18’s and then on work experience at Potters Bar Town FC. Our link with Potters Bar Town has been nothing but positive, Makise Evans enjoyed a spell as a 16 year old last season before becoming the clubs youngster debutant and Theo Alexandrou earned his professional contract following a spell there. We are grateful to the club for giving young players an opportunity at Step 3 football. Tuesday night also saw Max Woodford (15 years old, 6 months, 9 days) enter the frame as he came on for Taye Ashby-Hammond. Max also broke Makise record of becoming the youngster debutant to play for the football club. We are thrilled with what we saw on Tuesday and the win made it better. As an academy we are proud of all players, we are thankful to have a Chairman, Manager and senior staff who are willing to give young players opportunities. The players have earnt their opportunities, worked hard, stayed humble and

recent consistent performance have given the first team the trust to give them a chance. Tuesday nights are the moment we as academy staff work incredible hard for, seeing the faces on the family members and the players themselves. A moment they don’t forget. Coaches often take credit for the development players and although have play a huge part the key consistent figure in their life’s are family members. Parent have travelled the country, seen them at the lowest and picked up them, give them unconditional support and I am thankful for their support. Congratulation to Max, David, the staff, and the family. But this is one appearance, they now have to work harder to get the 2nd, 3rd, 4th appearances etc In other news, we also have the FA Youth Cup R2 to look forward to next week as we travel to AFC Wimbledon to compete is a difficult cup tie. Ronnie, Nick and the staff will be best preparing the players to hopefully get through. Kick off is 19:00 on Thursday 23rd November at Plough Lane also known as the Cherry Red Record Stadium. player and Barking wanted to catch Boro’ out. Kelsey Millen saw her opportunity fly wide of the goal before Ray needed to pull out a rare stop at her own end. From fifty minutes onwards – Stevenage dominated the game. Barking suffered being carved open time and again, with the Boro’ side passing their opponents into oblivion. Passes do not make prizes however. Millen had further opportunities off target, while Mathilda Fidler had beaten the offside trap, only for her heavy first touch to spurn the chance. Appeals were turned down for what appeared to be a stonewall penalty on Lilia Dempsey as she was hauled down in the box whilst winning the footrace to the ball, but the referee said no. Rebecca Edge headed wide from a corner, whilst Gooderham saw her best effort of the half fly straight at Hand.

tevenage FCW were the victims of the ultimate smash and grab as ten-player Barking netted a late winner at The County Ground this weekend. The hat trick hero of the reverse fixture – Laura Bunton – was the only person to score this time around, in a fixture that had seen twenty-one goals in the last three outings. Barking started the strongest with Bunton trying to find her range as her first effort from distance nearly caught out Celine Ray who was saved by the outside of the post. Her second effrt flew wide of the mark before Boro’ began to assert their influence on the game. Amy Gooderham, Hannah Nebbitt and Amy Makewell – on her one hundredth appearance for the club – all saw efforts saved well by Serena Hand, with the centurion also seeing a free kick and a further effort pass the goal on it’s way to the crowd. Gooderham and Makewell combined well as the half drew to a close with efforts that looked destined for the net, but the real drama came in the last minute of the half. Lindsay Sibbons, who had received a caution for her protestations at a coming together, saw a further yellow following a needless challenge that resulted in her dismissal from the field of play. Boro’ needed to take advantage of the extra

Boro pressed onwards, but it was a breakaway that cost them dearly. With three minutes remaining, Bunton got clear in the Boro’ half and ran away from Emily Schofield. With Boro’ careful not to give anything away, Bunton made it to the byline and back in; her shot was goalwards, but Ray sent the ball straight back into her path for an easy finish. Stevenage rallied again and saw a free kick saved, Makewell shoot wide when she seemed odds on to score and Fidler with an effort in the final minute that was saved in mid-air by Hand. It was not meant to be for Boro’ as the whistle blew and Barking celebrated a huge three points. “It was one of those games,” the Boro’ manager Dave Perry told us afterwards. “We see it so often that the ten players are galvanised by the perceived injustice of the sending off. We created chances, their ‘keeper was their player of the match! She is a good goalkeeper, but we should have made more of the chances we had.”

Samaritans knows there is still a stigma around men seeking help when they’re finding life tough. Their campaign Real People Real Stories reminds men that when life is tough, Samaritans is there to listen. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50, with men aged 20-59 being those most at risk. A survey by Samaritans found that two in five (41%) men in England, Scotland and Wales age 20-59 do not seek support when they need to, because they prefer to solve their problems themselves. Based on this, Samaritans approached men who had been through tough times to ask them to share their stories. These men are brothers, friends, sons, and fathers. They were open about their struggles, and each one gave Samaritans some handwritten words to sum up their story. Samaritans has taken these words, and the stories behind them, to create a campaign that draws on this human connection. These are real men, sharing their stories to encourage others to seek help by contacting Samaritans. Stevenage FC is proud to support this campaign as part of our commitment to take the mental wellbeing of our supporters, players, and staff seriously. We’re delighted to be able to mark International Men’s Day by raising awareness for this campaign and

hope that everyone connected with the club will take a moment to share the powerful stories and contact Samaritans’ national helpline on 116 123 if they need someone to listen. REMINISCENCE THERAPY

On Thursday 9th November, in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire, the Foundation hosted a Festival of Social Science event titled “Reminiscence therapy: how football can help unlock lost memories for people living with dementia”. Attendees joined the Foundation team in the Benington Suite at the Lamex Stadium with tea, coffee, cake and a wonderful view over the pitch. The event was well attended with a mixture of service providers (Hertswise, Alzheimer’s Society, Music24, Hertfordshire County Council, Stevenage Borough Council, Hospice of St Francis, The Red Shed and others), and members of the public (including a carer and person living with dementia). Attendees were also joined by Mayor of Stevenage, Councillor Myla Arceno and her Consort John Arceno, who are both great supporters of health and wellbeing and dementia care. The event was a mixture of speakers including Hannah Marsh (Head of Health & Wellbeing, Stevenage FC Foundation); Danny Buckley (Senior Lecturer, University of Hertfordshire); Dr. Elspeth Mathie (Assistant Director, Centre for Public Health and Community Care, CRIPACC,

University of Hertfordshire, NIHR ARC East of England) and Charlotte Bird (Active Ageing Officer, Herts Sports & Physical Activity Partnership). Danny Buckley presented on research into the benefits of reminiscence therapy for people affected by dementia and led onto promoting our Boro Bygones Reminiscence programme which will be re-launching in January 2024. One attendee confirmed “how much goes on in Stevenage”, but attendees agreed it is difficult to access after a dementia diagnosis. As part of the University of Hertfordshire research, they have worked with Stevenage Borough Council to produce a physical activities booklet which can be accessed here. The event continues an on-going collaboration between the University of Hertfordshire and local partners, ensuring research includes people with lived experience, organisations who already have on-going relationships with those who need support, the NHS and the local authority. Working together we can enable research to meet the needs and priorities of local communities. Midfielder Lasse Sørensen joined the Imps on a long-term deal in July 2021, following a threeyear spell as a professional with Stoke City. A youth international with Denmark, Lasse has made 24 appearances from under 16’s up to under 20’s. Sørensen made his professional debut for Stoke in May 2018, coming on as a substitute against Swansea City in the Premier League. With a further seven league appearances to his name in Stoke’s colours, Lasse spent the 2020/21 season on loan with MK Dons in Sky Bet League One. Sørensen has made over 60 appearances for the Imps.

100 YEARS AGO

Season 1923-24 saw Stevenage Athletic FC affiliating to the North Herts FA and joining the North Herts League. They were a busy club because they also entered the North Herts Benevolent Shield, the Herts Junior Cup, the Letchworth Hospital Cup, the Hitchin Hospital Cup, the Greg Cup and the Letchworth & District League. Their home ground was in Sish Lane (what we now call the King George V Playing Fields), likely the same location that Stevenage Borough played on some 54 years later in 1977. One of the leading lights in Stevenage Athletic was a young man by the name of Philip Ireton. 18 year old Philip was one of the principal organisers of the club, and would often venture out on his bicycle and go visit all the team members during the week in order to ensure their attendance at a game on the following Saturday. Philip went on to become a local politician of some note (CBE, DL, JP), eventually earning the distinction of becoming a Freeman of the Town.
