MATCHDAY MASCOTS
Boro is clearly the place to be at the moment and we are delighted to announce that we have no less than four mascots for this afternoon’s clash with Hartlepool.
So first up we offer a big Boro welcome to Finlay Bourke who is 10. A pupil at St Catherine’s School in Ware, Finlay lives in Ware and cites football and gaming as his main hobbies. His favourite player is Luke Norris.
Next up we welcome Amelie Newman to the Lamex. Amelie is 11 years of age, lives in Leighton Buzzard and attends Mary Bassett School Lower School in the town. Gymnastics is her main hobby and Carl Piergianni is her favourite Boro player. Harry Smith is also on mascot duty with Boro today. Harry is 10 but celebrates his 11th birthday tomorrow so happy birthday for then Harry!!! Harry lives in Hertford and attends Morgans Primary School in the town. His hobbies are football and
basketball and his favourite Boro player is Terence Vancooten. Our final mascot for today is 8-year-old Leo Newman. Leo also attends Mary Basset School, in Leighton Buzzard, where he lives. Leo’s hobbies are listed as football and rugby and his favourite Boro player is Danny Rose.
Heres hoping they have an amazing day with us today and that they all bring the luck needed to help the Boro boys to another three points.
Boro began life back in League Two with this unconvincing opening day win at home to Hartlepool. After a bottom placed finish the previous campaign in League One, the home side were determined to start on the front foot but had to wait for a goal on the hour mark to clinch victory. Boro did enjoy the better of the early play with Pools keeper Scott
Flinders making three fine saves to keep it goalless. Though the visitors also came close, hitting the bar on just two minutes with Sam Beasant well beaten.
Boro did bide their time however and finally won it when Chris Whelpdale cracked home a volley from 20 yards for the opener. Tom Pett and Adam Marriott also had chances to score but in the end it was a satisfactory start for Boro.

FAN FOCUS INTERVIEW
FIRST
GAME?
In August 1988 against Berkhamstead in the Vauxhall division 2 north and we won 5-1!!
AREA
OF GROUND?
I now sit in in the North Stand raised disabled area which a very dangerous place to sit when the Boro players are warming up!! I originally stood in the East Stand but I was also a steward for a number of years and also a turnstile cashier in the good old days when we used money!!!
FAVOURITE GAMES?
I would have to say the Newcastle games as I was a Steward on the tunnel so had a front seat to the two dugouts having a go at each other. It was better to watch than the football!!!
FAVOURITE ALL TIME PLAYER?
I would have to say Barry Hayles as he was exciting every time he touched the ball. Also Mark Smith who always gave his body and soul!!
Boro are delighted to welcome Roland Butcher to The Lamex today in his capacity as guest of honour. Roland earned fame as the first black player to play Test and One Day International cricket for England. While on duty Roland also set a world record in his first game for England, scoring the fastest 50 in International ODI Cricket on debut. That record stood for 41 years and was only broken in 2021.
FAVOURITE CURRENT PLAYER?
This would be Dan Sweeney who is as solid as a rock but Jordan Roberts would be close behind as he gives us the out ball and width we need during games.
WHY DO YOU LOVE BORO?
I love Boro because they are my local team and the town is far better having a league team than not. I had to miss a few seasons due to an illness but I have returned as a season ticket holder this season. I think that this the reason we are doing so well so I will take the credit!!!
FAVOURITE SHIRT?
My favourite shirt was the 2008 – 2009 Vanderel “Megaman” shirt – I still have one but it is way too small for me(it must have shrunk in the wash!!). Yeh right!!
Come on you Boro!!
Thanks for your support and work over many seasons, Ed

HISTORY
ON THIS DAY: 12 NOVEMBER
Today is a date in Boro’ history that hasn’t been short of goals. In eight previous outings on 12 November, there have been 32 goals – an average of four goals per game. Breaking it down even more, we’re averaging 2.38 goals for – and 1.63 against. And that stacks up; Boro’ having only lost two of those eight and winning five by comparison.
Funnily enough, the one fixture that really does buck the trend for goals on this date was our trip to today’s visitors – Hartlepool United – on 12 November 2011. Scott Laird scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after Chris Beardsley was felled in the area. It was also the start of a memorable FA Cup run for us that season. Not such a memorable fixture, mind you. Elsewhere, there was high drama in 2002 as Luton Town came to Broadhall Way in the LDV Vans Trophy. For Wayne Turner’s side, it was a lucrative reward for seeing off Swansea City in the previous round. Despite three goals of our own, a sixminute hattrick from Ahmet Brkovic gave the Hatters a decisive edge in the battle. There was yet more drama too in 2013 as Boro’ defeated Leyton Orient in the aforementioned competition – albeit rebadged and restructured. Roarie Deacon saw red, however, to complicate matters; Boro’ ultimately edging the Os by the odd goal in five to progress to a regional semifinal against Swindon Town.
1983 Holbeach United 3-0 Stevenage Borough, United Counties League Knockout Cup
1988 Wolverton Town 0-4 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North (Smith, M Gittings, Cox, M Taverner)
1994 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Farnborough, GM Vauxhall Conference (Hayles 2, Beevor)
2002 Stevenage Borough 3-4 Luton Town, LDV Trophy R2 (OG, Pacquette, Scott)
2005 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Kidderminster Harriers , Nationwide Conference (Stamp 2, Laker)
2011 Hartlepool United 0-1 Stevenage, FA Cup R1 (Laird)
2013 Stevenage 3-2 Leyton Orient , Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Quarter Final (South) (Zoko, Akins, Morais; Deacon s/o)
2016 Stevenage 2-2 Yeovil Town, Sky Bet League Two (Kennedy 2)
With the greatest respect to our latest visitors, this is a fixture that – in our time as a Football League club – has been a generous one. In 13 previous meetings with Pools, Boro’ have won nine and lost one. The goals for column also tells an encouraging story; us with 23 goals to our name and Hartlepool United languishing on eight.
Indeed, the only time we somewhat
contrived to lose to Pools came during the season in which they were relegated to the National League. Now, our guests surely can’t say we didn’t try to assist their survival cause that season? It was at the Lamex that we first met Pools for the first time – that being in August 2011 shortly after our promotion to League One. That fixture finished two apiece – Byron Harrison and Scott Laird with the goals for us that day. Since that afternoon, however, our record at home against Hartlepool United has been flawless. More of the same, please…
MAGIC MOMENT:
Sky Bet League Two – 03 September 2016
Wells, and Michael Tonge. For Boro’, this was a very successful afternoon indeed; up there with our biggest Football League victories. For our visitors (and, (of course, Mr Stelling), it was humiliating. And not even beating us later that season would ultimately save them.
ON BOTH SIDES…
Our recollection of this afternoon in 2016 is that we were in the thralls of an international break. As such, we had the pleasure of Sky Sports reporter Bianca Westwood relaying events back to the Soccer Saturday studio – not least to an ardent Pools fan: Jeff Stelling. We’d go as far to say that Jeff heard a little too much from the Lamex that day. Tyler Walker scored twice – adding to goals from Matt Godden, Tom Petts, Dean
The list of players that we’ve shared with Pools over the years isn’t the most extensive. We can only be certain of 10 lads who have worn both shirts. Of course, none went as far to share part of a name with Hartlepool United as Peter Hartley did. Alas, there’s no-one on the list with a stray Steven or Boro’ in their name to counter that. Apart from Hartley, other names to feature on the list include former Boro’ youth prospect Ryan Johnson; midfielder Simon Walton; and goalkeeper Andy Lomas – who featured during our early days as a GM Vauxhall Conference team, before Dessie returned. There’s also Paul Thompson, whose time with us in the late 1990s was ravaged by injury.

Today’s notes come at a time where we as an Academy take a moment to reflect on the first 12 weeks of our schoolboy programme, with coaches due to meet formally with players and parents this coming week about their progress. So far, our staff have produced some excellent work which has contributed to a fun, challenging and engaging body of work for our players. The phase lead coaches have built upon the games programme to include fixtures with the likes of Man United, Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham, Fulham, Watford, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest. These fixtures add an excitement for the boys, they also give us a different perspective about how close our players are to the best in the country, giving everyone a natural boost to redouble efforts to improve what we do. Our coaching staff have engaged in their first phase specific CPD events, with our Foundation Phase focussing on Practice Design and Session Flow and the Youth Development Phase this week engaging with different strategies of coaching as a team. All coaches contributed to an enjoyable learning environment and I have to thank the phase leads, Tom Farr and Paul Dale, for their support in delivering these events. It is our aim to provide CPD
once a month, something that we are on course to do as we see it as vital, not only to develop the coaches but to also consolidate our own understanding of what we do as an Academy. Robyn Reardon, our Head of Player Care has introduced a brilliant, ‘Highlight of the Week’ board, which is updated every week to share some of the amazing things our young players have been getting up to away from the club. Such highlights so far have included, going to the first team game, having a good piano lesson, earning points for behaviour at school, with many more besides. This is one of the many additions Robyn has made so far this season, with a more holistic approach to developing and supporting our young players.
Finally, our apprentices represented the club well this week, competing in the Herts Senior Cup away to Hadley, winning 2-0 and booking a quarter final away to Hitchin Town in January. We look forward to hopefully continuing our progress in this competition, which gives our players valuable exposure to playing against adults in knockout football. Enjoy the game, up the boro!

Stevenage FCW took all three points home after a dominant performance at Harlow Town. The result meant Boro’ leapfrogged the scheduled opponents for last week – Haringey Borough – and kept pace with the league leaders, Luton Town, who saw their game postponed seconds before kick-off. The home side had worked hard to keep Stevenage at bay and in truth, Stevenage could have been ahead in the first half. However, a mixture of bad fortune and good play meant the scores were level at half time. Boro’ came out for the second half with renewed purpose and continued to push on. When the first goal finally arrived it had a huge slice of luck but as former Stevenage manager Graham Westley used to say, you make your own luck in football. Amy Makewell, Becky Shephard and Katie White all maintained possession in the middle of the park before a stunning ball over the top from Nicole Farmer found the energetic run of Anna Re. She beat her marker to deliver a ball which deflected into the path of the goalkeeper who inexplicably tried to keep it in. The ball rebounded into the path of Amy Makewell who will have no easier goal to score this season as
she slotted her fifth league goal of the season calmly into the open goal. The second goal came ten minutes later. Re was involved again as her throw in from the right caused havoc on the outside edge of the box. Erin Price came out of it with the ball and her low driven cross found Millen, who had got in front of her runner, to score her second of the season from close range. The scoring was complete late in the half when even more chaos ensued from a left flank corner. White was involved as she tried to fire the ball home, but instead a game of pinball began. Captain Lucy Webster soon grew tired of this and used her left boot to scoop the ball away from the defenders and into the net for her first goal since her return from injury. The match also saw a debut for Development Team Captain Nicole Cooper and a return to action for Tamsyn Sibanda – who has not featured since last season’s injury problems. Stevenage remain five points behind Luton, but still with two games to play against the table toppers. The race for promotion is truly beginning to fire up.

FORM GUIDE
Hartlepool come to Boro this afternoon in 23rd spot and in the relegation places from League Two.
With just 12 points from 17 league matches this campaign it has proved to be another season of struggle, and it all began ominously for our visitors as they failed to win in their first 11 games, losing five and
drawing six, their first success remarkably coming on October 4 with a 2-1 victory against Doncaster. Four successive league defeats then followed though under interim boss Keith Curle Pools did enjoy another 2-1 success, once again at home, this time to Grimsby at the end of October. In other competitions our visitors were thumped 4-0 at Blackburn in the EFL Cup and finished bottom of their group in the EFL Trophy. An 84th minute leveller from Solihull Moors denied them FA Cup success on Saturday as they face a replay against the National League side.
5 SEASONS
MEET THE BOSS:
Hartlepool United confirmed the appointment of Keith Curle as interim manager in September 2022.
Curle had a playing career that saw him make over 700 appearances with the likes of Manchester City, Wolves, Sheffield United and Wimbledon, as well as being capped for England at the 1992 European Championships. He began his managerial career in 2002 and has since amassed over 600 games as a manager. He has vast experience of EFL League Two, winning promotion via the play-offs at Wembley with Northampton Town in 2020.
The highly experienced manager is joined at the club by his assistant Colin West, a former Sunderland, Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday and Hartlepool United player.
ONE TO WATCH:
Experienced midfielder Nicky Featherstone arrived as then-boss Paul Murray’s first signing in October 2014, initially signing a short-term deal with the Club. However, his form in the centre of the park has blossomed since then and he became an integral part of the engine room, particularly upon the arrival of Craig Hignett as Manager in February 2016.
Comfortable and composed in possession, Featherstone is now the Club’s longest-serving player having passed 200 appearances in all competitions during 2019/20.
Having started his career with Hull City, he moved on to Hereford United in 2011 on a permanent deal after impressing during a loan spell with The Bulls. After making almost 60 appearances for the Edgar Street outfit, Featherstone returned to the Football League with Walsall where he spent two years. In 2015/16 he played 52 games in all competitions – with Jake Carroll the only man in the squad to complete more minutes in the campaign than the dependable midfielder. Featherstone was again among the top outfield appearance-makers last season and went on to sign a new contract with the Club during the summer.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
Tomorrow, wear your poppy with pride at the War Memorial in the Old Town. In particular, reflect and ponder over the former Stevenage footballers whose names are etched on the obelisk: Eric Ward, Herbert Day, Owen Abbiss and Alan Ward.
Alan was born in October 1920. He came from a large family of three boys and six girls. His family lived in Stanmore Road and he attended the Letchmore Road Boys School. At the age of 14. Alan took up an apprenticeship at the ESA factory, eventually going on to manufacture wings for Mosquito bombers in the early 1940’s.
At just 17, Alan’s passion for football secured him a wing-half birth with Stevenage Town. Helping “the Stripes” attain the runners-up spot in the Spartan League 2nd Div., he quickly became a fans’ favourite. His evident talents were soon recognised, not least by the Millwall and England winger, Reg Smith. Invited to The Den, Alan played three games for Millwall before he was called up for the army.
Alan served with the Reconnaissance Corps, R.A.C. 15th (Scottish) Regiment, and was sent to Normandy. He found himself right in the vanguard of the long, slow process to capture the city of Caen.
On July 17th, a week after the fall of Caen, Alan’s unit withdrew to the town of Cheux
for rest and recuperation. It was here that Luftwaffe fighter aircraft strafed his position, killing him and another trooper.
Alan left a wife, Olive (nee Hollingsworth) and is buried in the CWGC cemetery at St Mainvieu in France.
By a strange twist of fate, Owen Abbiss, one of Alan’s best friends and a team-mate in the same Stevenage Town side was also killed in Normandy two days later. Owen lies in the CWGC cemetery at Hottot-le-Barges, just 10km away from Alan.
Stevenage Town goalkeeper, Eric Ward (no relation) died of shrapnel wounds in Middlerode, Holland and now lies in the Uden cemetery near Nijmegen.
Herbert Day was a casualty in WW1 at Passchendaele. His remains are interred at the Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium.
Seven years ago, Sarah and I went to visit the graves of these fine lads, to lay wreathes and to pay our respects on behalf of the Club and the SA.
Spare a thought for these young men, when the ‘Last Post’ is played before today’s kick-off, and tomorrow on Remembrance Sunday. We will remember them.

‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’
To mark the new season, we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle anti-social and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause lifechanging injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials.
We know those who commit these illegal acts do not represent the majority of supporters.
